Tips for Buying a Travel Hair Dryer

Pay attention to size and weight.

If your luggage space is limited, you’ll be better off with one of the smaller items on our list. Foldable hair dryers are particularly convenient for packing because they can collapse into a more compact shape. If you’re working against suitcase weight limits, pay special attention to the weight of the hair dryer — there are great options even at under one pound.

Make sure it works for your hair type

You don’t want a dryer that’s too weak or too hot for your hair type, which can defeat the purpose of the product or leave your hair damp or frizzy. To prevent this, buy a travel dryer with similar wattage and power settings to your at-home hair dryer, and be sure to give it a test run before you travel. Many typical dryers are about 1800 watts.

Meanwhile, Iudina warns against “heavy, big-sized dryers. An extra long cord is probably also not necessary,” she says.

Another vital piece of advice for international jet setters: “Always check voltage compatibility and ensure your hair dryer is dual-voltage or has the correct voltage settings for your destination to avoid damage or safety issues,” emphasizes Farel. Different countries use different voltages, so plugging in a hair dryer that doesn’t align with that country’s voltage could damage the dryer and could even be dangerous. How to Blowout Your Hair:

Select your desired heat and speed settings. Using the concentrator, rough dry hair until it is 80% dry. To style, divide hair into 3-4 inch sections. Place a barrel brush beneath the first section, starting at the root. Follow the brush with the dryer, pulling through to the ends of the hair. When you reach the ends, roll hair back up to your head and hold. Continue styling this way until the section is dry. Release and move on to the next section. Press the Lock-in Cool Shot button to set your style with cool air.

How to Diffuse Your Hair:

Attach the T3 Afar diffuser (sold separately) to your T3 Afar travel size hair dryer. Select your optimal heat and speed setting on the dryer, then blow dry hair focusing on the roots. While drying, "scrunch" the hair with the diffuser from ends to roots to create defined waves and curls.

Caution: Do not wrap the power cord around the dryer as this may damage the electrical wiring. Consult the enclosed user guide prior to use.

Full disclosure: I don’t leave for vacation for a few more months, but I’m already thinking ahead! Planning a vacation is both exciting and stressful, requiring a good amount of brain power and an even greater amount of financial power. It’s worth it, but wow . . . it can be a whirlwind!

It comes with attachments to either curl or defrizz your hair depending on the style you’re going for. My hair is naturally pretty straight, so drying my hair with the defrizz nozzle has a flat iron-grade straightening effect, concentrating airflow for a smooth, shiny, frizz-free look. The curling attachment also works wonders for beachy waves, even if your hair has a hard time holding curls. It uses rapid wind speed to give your hair a bounce — without the damage!

Instead of frying your locks, this dryer uses millions of negative ions to ensure moisture retention. It has a temperature guard that keeps the temperature below 135 degrees Fahrenheit, performing hundreds of checks per second. Plus, like any good hair dryer, there are cool air, warm air, and hot air modes to choose from as well as a hot and cold cycle mode that alternates temperatures.

One more thing that sets this foldable dryer apart from the rest is the sound . . . or, should I say, the lack thereof . Powerful airflow is paired with a six-layer noise reduction system. Believe me when I say I am terrible at styling my hair. No matter how formal the occasion, I find every excuse in the book to leave my hair as is, meaning not blow drying it, not adding curlers, not flat ironing it, nothing . I’ve always been intimidated by the different-sized barrels and hated how much volume my hair lost when straightening it, constantly opting for my natural waves as a safe bet. With this, I’ve been searching for a hot tool that feels approachable for an amateur styler like myself to use during special occasions, like the multiple weddings on my calendar (none of which are in New York City, where I live, by the way). Enter Shark’s SpeedStyle Pro Flex Hair Dryer System . This tool makes styling easy and actually enjoyable (trust me!), and its compact design makes packing a breeze when traveling to destination weddings .

First and foremost, let’s talk about how genius this design is for travel. The dryer twists to fold to half its size—no more struggling to pack awkward L-shaped blow dryers when this option exists. Its compact design isn’t even the only feature that makes this a necessity for getting your hair wedding-ready in a hotel bathroom; the results from the Shark SpeedStyle Pro Flex are unbeatable. After testing it out for the first time, I couldn’t believe how quickly it dried my hair post-wash. I towel-dried my fresh-out-of-the-shower hair using a microfiber towel (to limit frizz) and applied my slew of hair oils and serums, including 14th Night’s The Hair Elixir for shine and Act+Acre’s Cold Processed Stem Cell Scalp Serum for scalp health, then let the blow dryer do its job (without any of the included attachments) until my hair was fully dry.

Despite barely letting my hair air dry before even plugging in the SpeedStyle Pro Flex , my hair was left completely dry and frizz-free in less than ten minutes, a feat I’ve never experienced with other blow dryers. Usually, blow dryers leave my naturally wavy hair with visible frizz and puffiness (and my arms sore from holding the tool up for so long), but not with this Shark model. I was in awe of how fabulous my hair looked, and I hadn’t even tried one of the attachments yet. Like other professional stylers on the market, the SpeedStyle Pro Flex comes with four attachments: a DefrizzFast Diffuser, QuickSmooth Brush, Turbo Concentrator, and a FrizzFighter Finishing Tool, all of which aim to leave your hair looking either perfectly smooth or coily, depending on the attachment. When testing, I opted for the FrizzFighter Finishing Tool to achieve that extra-smooth look and, admittedly, could not stop staring at how good my hair looked in the mirror afterward.

Aside from the salon-like results, SpeedStyle Pro Flex offers a way to style your hair for any occasion without excessive heat damage (as seen with other blow dryers), thanks to the Scalp Shield technology that adjusts the tool’s temperatures and the 230-degrees-Fahrenheit heat threshold. This styler truly offers everything you need for a stunning mane, so much so that you’ll likely use it even when you’re not traveling for weddings (I know I can’t resist).
