Pronunciation of Lido?

I could hunt up a dictionary but... please be my dictionary.

When you're talking about the Lido Deck, is that lee-doe or lye-doe?

Someday let me tell you how I ended up at Shinagawa Eki instead of Shinjuku Eki on the wrong side of Tokyo... the moral of that story is always learn how to pronounce places before you have to get there!

taffy12

I always say lee-doe but then I am from the south and we pronounce things differantly from other parts of the country-so I can't promise you that is correct-you know the old saying "you say two-matoe-I say ta-mato."

It's always LEE-doe, no matter where you're from.:D

that is always the way I have heard it also Cotton-but I have had so many snobby people correct me over the years-you know how it is-lots of people do not like southerners.

Some that corrected me I KNEW did NOT know what they were talking about but I let it pass. a lot of people just plain do not like a southern accent.

The only word I know that I do not say as I should is "idea"-I say "idear" you know I stick a "r" on the end of it-a southern thing-I have a friend who has now lived in the south over 10 years-even married a "southern boy" and she loved to correct me-I would always ignore her but one day when I was having a "menapause moment" I just flat told her-if she despised the way southerners talk so much why in the world did she marry a "southern boy" and stay down south all these years? She never insulted me again.

The worse culprit though was a Boston cab driver-he had such a thick accent of his own-and where we add "r's" he would drop them in his speach you know "party" was "Paa-ty"-he proceeded to correct me on a couple of words and I just laughed at him-and asked him wasn't that like the "pot calling the kettle black"-ofcourse he had no idea what THAT meant so he missed my point.

stowaway2k

Not quite true.

The British, and many Europeans, pronounce it LYE-doe. ;)

Great! Both are used.... which means either that you can't be wrong, or that you can't be right. I think I'll go with lee - doe. Or maybe just avoid saying it!

K&RCurt

K&RCurt

I believe the correct pronucnication is Lee-Doe, Why do I believe this?

I believe the useage of the term Lido for a deck on a ship is based on the presence of a pool and sunning area, which relates to a "beach", which in Italian is "Lido".

In Italian Lido is pronounced "Lee-Doe".

As usual, I am prepared to be corrected and look forward to any contrary evidence!

Well, the Italian translation of 'beach' is 'spiaggia'

The English translation of 'Lido' from Italian to English is 'Lido' or 'beach', depending where you look.

The Webster's Dictionary definition of Lido is "a fashionable beach resort"

The origin of Lido is from the famous beach resort island in Venice, Italy,

taken from the Latin "Litus" meaning "Shore"; and "littorallis" meaning "of or belonging to the seashore".

http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=lido&searchmode=none

It is indeed "Lee-doe" in Italian. And on a ship, it is traditionally the pool deck.

The famous Italian ocean liner REX, at one time the fastest ship in the world from the 1930's, actually had sand around the pool on the Lido Deck. Wonder how much of it blew away while crossing the Atlantic!

(I have too much time on my hands today, I may as well learn something)

It's interesting that those would be the 2 options for pronunciation. Drop the "o" and what are you left with? Lid. As in the lid on a jar.

I liked the discussion a few years ago on how to pronounce the name of the HAL ship "Zuiderdam".

Genessa

The "elevator lady" (the voice that announced all the floors) on Princess prounounces it Lee-doe.

That's good enough for me ;) .

packercruising

Not quite true. The British, and many Europeans, pronounce it LYE-doe. ;)

Wel them Brits talk funny anyway, dontcha know! (a jab at Blowers if he's around:) )

Genessa has the best answer yet! Elevator lady oughta know.:D

clackey

Hola amigos,

I had to get in on this. I have to agree with the elevator girl. She says lee-doe and that is how they pronounced it on the "LOVE BOAT". Now that we have that settled, how do you say promanade. Is it prom-ah-nod or prom-ah-naid?

You do realize that this can go on for days?

Eliot Ness

..........................I had to get in on this. I have to agree with the elevator girl. She says lee-doe and that is how they pronounced it on the "LOVE BOAT". Now that we have that settled, how do you say promanade. Is it prom-ah-nod or prom-ah-naid?.................
Well, the elevator lady told us last summer that it was pronounced prom-ah-nod. And who am I to argue with the elevator lady ;) !   John

OMG! Whatever you do, you don't want to argue with the elevator lady!

Unless you live in England, where it`s always pronounced LYE-DO:cool:

Wel them Brits talk funny anyway, dontcha know! (a jab at Blowers if he's around:) )   Genessa has the best answer yet! Elevator lady oughta know.:D

Do we really??/ We invented the language!!

here's one I just thought of:

on the Food Network on TV I've heard the buffet, or "buff ay" referred to as the "boo fay". hmmmmmmm?

(regardless, I think I'll still call it buff ay)

jaybird1

Do we really??/ We invented the language!!   You say TOM_AY_TO and I say TOM_AH-TO!!

The Brits invented it? then why don't they speak it properly.

I remember the TV series Dynasty - dien-asty the Brits called it din-isty.

How come when I'm in Liverpool or Yorkshire or the East End of London they mumble everything - thats not English.

But getting back to the orignal question Lido is an Italian work Leedo, even the Brits that holiday near Venice on the Lido pronounce it leedo:)

that is what I fiugred! someone somewhere would pronounce it differantly!

I love you brits and all of your accents-and guys just like differant areas of the US speak differently so do differant areas of Britan.

It's interesting that those would be the 2 options for pronunciation. Drop the "o" and what are you left with? Lid. As in the lid on a jar.   I liked the discussion a few years ago on how to pronounce the name of the HAL ship "Zuiderdam".

so Dan you say "Lid"-and then "O"?

Hola amigos,   I had to get in on this. I have to agree with the elevator girl. She says lee-doe and that is how they pronounced it on the "LOVE BOAT". Now that we have that settled, how do you say promanade. Is it prom-ah-nod or prom-ah-naid?   You do realize that this can go on for days?

well maybe Celebrity had the right idea. they do not call it the lido deck but something else-(I forget what- just not lido)

I wasn't making fun of the Brits. Just 1 in particular! :D

So how do you say Ketchup?

Has anyone ever seen the elevator lady? No. So how do we know she i pronouncing it right? :) ;)

RoofingPrincess

RoofingPrincess

...then maybe the voice you hear in the elevator is actually the voice of the ship herself, and not of some mysterious, unseen "elevator lady"!

12-Year-Old Boy Falls to His Death from Balcony of Cruise Ship Heading for Galveston, Texas

"We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our guests," Royal Caribbean told PEOPLE in a statement

A 12-year-old boy has died after falling from the balcony of a cruise ship.

The pre-teen was aboard Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas — which was en route to Galveston, Texas at the end of a week-long cruise — when the incident happened on Saturday, Sept. 7.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told PEOPLE in a statement, “We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our guests. Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest's family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

PEOPLE has confirmed that the boy fell at the ‘Central Park’ area of the ship, located on deck 8, where many of the vessel’s bars, restaurants and shops live. He sadly died before the vessel docked in Texas.

The news comes after a 16-year-old boy also fell to his death on the ship back in 2019.

According to multiple outlets, the teenager fell while attempting to climb into his room from the balcony.

At the time, Royal Caribbean corporate communications manager, Owen Torres, confirmed the death in a statement to PEOPLE. “We are saddened by the loss of one of our guests in a tragic accident,” the statement read.

The Broward Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to PEOPLE in a statement at the time that the boy was on the eighth floor of Harmony of the Seas when he attempted to climb into his room because he forgot his room key.

According to a press release from Royal Caribbean, Harmony of the Seas was the world’s largest cruise liner when it launched in 2016. She departed on her maiden voyage in November 2016 from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The vessel has 16 guest decks, 2,747 staterooms and can carry over 5,000 guests.

12-year-old dies in fall from balcony on Royal Caribbean cruise ship

The FBI is investigating the death of a boy aboard the Harmony of the Seas on its way back to its Texas port.

cruise liner pronunciation

The FBI is investigating the death of a 12-year-old boy who plummeted from a balcony to a lower deck on a Royal Caribbean ship returning to Galveston, Tex., the agency said.

The incident occurred Saturday night aboard the Harmony of the Seas on the last night of a seven-day western-Caribbean cruise that had stopped in Honduras and Mexico, the cruise company said. Cruise tracking site CruiseMapper showed that the ship returned to port Sunday and left for its current western-Caribbean voyage the same day.

Circumstances surrounding the boy’s death were still not clear Wednesday. Multiple news outlets have reported that the boy fell from a balcony that overlooks the inner part of the vessel and landed in the Central Park area of the ship, which is lined with trees, plants, restaurants and shops.

Railings on cruise ships must be at least 42 inches tall, under the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act that passed in 2010.

The FBI confirmed that it was investigating the incident but declined to release additional details. The agency, which said it is “the primary federal agency authorized to investigate potential crimes on the high seas,” was coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection.

Royal Caribbean released little information.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our guests,” the cruise company said in a statement. “Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

Harmony of the Seas is one of the largest cruise ships in the world, according to the Royal Caribbean website. It has 18 decks and can hold a maximum of 6,687 guests in 2,747 staterooms. It is divided into seven “neighborhoods,” including a boardwalk, promenade, pool and sports zone, youth area and the Central Park section where the boy fell.

The ship was the scene of another young passenger’s death in 2019, when a 16-year-old slipped and fell while trying to access his room from an adjacent balcony, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported at the time. Royal Caribbean called that incident a “tragic accident.”

Living at sea: Travelers on a 9-month world cruise are going viral on social media. For some travelers, not even nine months was enough time on a ship; they sold cars, moved out of their homes and prepared to set sail for three years . That plan fell apart, but a 3.5-year version is waiting in the wings.

Passengers beware: It’s not all buffets and dance contests. Crime data reported by cruise lines show that the number of sex crimes has increased compared to previous years. And though man-overboard cases are rare, they are usually deadly .

The more you know: If you’re cruise-curious, here are six tips from a newcomer. Remember that in most cases, extra fees and add-ons will increase the seemingly cheap price of a sailing. And if you happen to get sick , know what to expect on board.

12-year-old cruise ship passenger falls to his death on final day of journey.

A 12-year-old boy fell to his death from a balcony on a Royal Caribbean ship just before it docked in Texas on the final day of a weeklong cruise, according to reports.

The unidentified preteen fell from an upper deck — where he had climbed a balcony — and landed in the “Central Park” area of the Harmony of the Seas, a bustling spot filled with bars, restaurants and shops,  according to People.

The ship’s crew tried to resuscitate the boy, but he died before the boat could dock in Galveston on Sept. 8,  Royal Caribbean Blog reported.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our guests,” a Royal Caribbean rep told The Post in an emailed statement.

“Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time,” the statement continued. “For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

The Harmony of the Seas had just finished a seven-night cruise through the western Caribbean when the tragedy happened, the blog reported.

Witnesses say the boy had been playing with friends he’d met on board just before he tumbled over the stateroom’s balcony railing, it added.

“My daughter was friends with him and said he was upset today,” Sara Tullas, who appears to be a passenger, wrote in a Harmony of the Seas Facebook group.

“If anyone knows the family, please send them thoughts and prayers,” the post continued. “I don’t want to release his name, but wow. I wish I would have known he was struggling today.”

The ordeal also delayed the ship’s plan to board passengers for the next voyage.

'Nothing can prepare you for 9 months': Guests reflect on Royal Caribbean world cruise

Portrait of Nathan Diller

  • The Ultimate World Cruise, which departed from Miami in December, garnered widespread attention in the weeks following its departure.
  • The 274-night cruise visiting more than 60 countries allowed the ship to visit a wide range of destinations.
  • The trip didn’t always go as originally planned, either. Royal Caribbean rerouted the vessel earlier this year and there was even a flooding.

Audrey Martucci had never been on a cruise before booking a nine-month sailing with Royal Caribbean International .

The travel was one appeal, but the 60-year-old had another motivation. Her husband, Joe, had “no intention” of retiring, according to Audrey. “And so when the travel agent contacted us, and he called me, my first thought was, ‘Well, this will mean that you'll retire, so I'll say yes to this cruise,’” she said, laughing.

She and Joe – an avid cruiser – took a few sailings to warm up for the Ultimate World Cruise , which departed from Miami in December. “But nothing can prepare you for nine months,” said Joe, 67.

The Orlando, Florida, couple, who are now both retired, dove into travel. They sold their car, and their nephew moved into their house while they made the Serenade of the Seas ship their home.

The 274-night cruise visiting more than 60 countries garnered widespread attention in the weeks following its departure. Dispatches from passengers went viral on TikTok, amplified by other users recapping the latest developments and subsequent media reports.

Ahead of the sailing’s conclusion on Tuesday, USA TODAY spoke with several guests about what it was like spending nearly a year sailing around the world.

‘This ship was going places that I’d never been’

The length of the cruise allowed the ship to visit a wide range of destinations. That was a big draw even for guests like Joe Martucci, who had traveled extensively for work. “This ship was going places that I’d never been,” he said. Those included Buenos Aires, Argentina – allowing him and Audrey to see the sun rise over Iguazu Falls – and Copacabana Beach in Brazil.

Adita Larson, a guest from Houston, said Antarctica was her favorite destination. “You can't video and you can’t photograph how beautiful it is to stand in front of those icebergs and see them right in front of your eyes so close,” said the 64-year-old.

Royal Caribbean also curated experiences for passengers. Brandee Lake, 47, had been to the Great Wall of China before, but the cruise line offered an exclusive tour of the Badaling section this time around. “So, it was super exciting to have it basically private for our group,” said Lake, who was previously based in Los Angeles. “Like, when does that happen?”

She also seized opportunities to set out on her own. When the ship skipped a stop in Madagascar due to a storm, for example, Lake flew there herself for a brief visit.

But visiting even the most exciting places can take a toll after a while. The ship’s Europe segment that began in July was quite port-heavy, with only a handful of sea days in the first couple of months. Larson said many folks on board complained of being “exhausted.”

“It’s a blur,” she said. “We don’t know where we were yesterday; we don’t know where we’re going tomorrow.”

The Martuccis echoed the sentiment. At one point during the cruise, a friend of theirs stayed behind while their partner took a shore excursion. “And I remember coming back and saying to Joe, ‘You can do that? We don’t have to go?’ ” Audrey recalled. “That was, like, a huge revelation to me.”

At the beginning of the cruise, they said many guests “hated” days without any stops. “Now we’re all like, ‘Oh my god, a sea day. This is so good,’ ” she said.

The trip didn’t always go as originally planned, either. Royal Caribbean rerouted the vessel earlier this year amid continued attacks in the Red Sea, for example. Rather than transiting through the Suez Canal, the ship sailed an alternate path around Africa.

Lake said canceled ports during the voyage served as a “reminder to be flexible.”

“I think if I learned anything, it’s to expect the unexpected,” she said.

The ship also saw flooding in parts of the ship amid rough weather off the coast of South America in January, and the line confirmed the death of a passenger in February.

Story continues below.

‘Just like any other community’

Cruise ships are often described as cities at sea, and the Ultimate World Cruise fostered a neighborly sense of camaraderie, passengers said.

“I mean, obviously, it’s just like any other community,” said Lake. “You have the people that you are really close to, some of them are acquaintances, maybe some that are not your people, but nothing wrong. It’s just, you have your group that you naturally gel with.”

Outside of roughly 650 Ultimate World Cruise guests, the sailing was also sold in segments, bringing new folks into the mix every couple of months or so. If passengers ever need space, Audrey Martucci said, they can find solace in their cabins. “Or there’s lots of spaces on the ship that you can go and hide,” she said.

And while the Martuccis took pains to prepare themselves for the trip – they even scoped out the ship during one of their practice cruises – spending so much time with one another was a change. “We went from him working full time to all of a sudden, we're in these small quarters together all the time, and we've done it,” she said. “So, anything else is going to be a breeze now.”

“And you haven’t tossed me overboard,” Joe added.

Guests help each other out, too. Larson said there is a group chat on Facebook where passengers can ask for items they need or post things they no longer want to exchange with one another.

Lake advised anyone thinking about taking a world cruise to pack light – a lesson she learned from experience. She brought three large suitcases, a rolling carry-on bag and a backpack. “I pared it down, and it's still just too much,” she said. “It's kind of like your own closet: you really only wear about 10% to 20% of it.”

While she felt she had too many shoes and rarely wore her accessories, other items like cubbies for the closet came in handy.

Still, the logistics of managing life can be more complex on a ship. Larson pointed to her condominium, which suffered minor damage during Hurricane Beryl . “So not being there to deal with things like that,” she said. “Of course, we could have gone home, but it wasn't that huge of an emergency.” She found other tasks, like paying bills, easy to keep up with online.

The Martuccis even managed to buy a car remotely, so they’ll have one when the cruise ends, and a home in Audrey’s native Scotland, where they plan to spend summers. “We’ve been able to function,” said Joe.

As for whether they got tired of the food, Joe said, “It's just like at home, you open your refrigerator and go, ‘That's all we have,’ and you decide to go out instead of eating (at home). You kind of get that feeling sometimes.” But he emphasized that compared to the earlier cruise they took on Serenade of the Seas, the culinary team “upped their game” for the nine-month sailing.

What is a world cruise?: It's not a 'shoot-from-the-hip decision'

Going viral

The attention the cruise received online caught passengers like the Martuccis off guard. They originally planned to share videos with their kids, who suggested they post on TikTok . Their follower count jumped from “almost none” to nearly 100,000 within a week, according to Joe.

“We fell into it, and we got caught up in this daily video,” Audrey said. “But it’s been great.”

Lake, who has been chronicling her trip online as well, echoed that, calling the experience a “surprise.” She and the Martuccis both noted they had been recognized by strangers on board.

Larson didn’t have a TikTok account when she boarded the ship, but she’s had fun sharing videos from the trip. She hopes to continue doing so back on land, “especially after we get home, the adjustment after nine months of being away from home, and sleeping on a bed that's not rocking anymore.”

Nine months at sea hasn’t soured them on travel. Larson has nearly 30 cruises booked, the first of which takes place in October. Lake, who gave up her apartment and a job in advertising and marketing to travel full-time, plans to start a new profession, organizing group trips.

The Martuccis also have many travel plans, including a family cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas in January. “We're not going to let the grass grow under our feet,” said Joe.

A couple moved onto a never-ending, around-the-world cruise that's been stuck at port for 3 months — see inside the Villa Vie Odyssey ship

  • Villa Vie says its residential cruise ship Odyssey will set sail on September 9 or 10 following a three-month delay.
  • Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin left their home in Hawaii in the spring to move onto the ship.
  • The couple said they were "very impressed" with Villa Vie Odyssey despite its delays — take a look inside.

Insider Today

Villa Vie Odyssey looks like any other cruise ship, complete with a modern pool deck, a buffet, a pickleball court, and excited travelers.

But Villa Vie Residences' 509-cabin vessel won't operate conventional Caribbean cruises or Alaska sailings.

Instead, the residential ship is readying to embark on a never-ending vacation that would circumnavigate the world every 3 ½ years, stopping at 147 countries and 425 destinations along the way — all while providing travelers with the comforts of a traditional cruise liner.

But not without hiccups. The ship has been stuck in Belfast, Northern Ireland for more than 3 months.

cruise liner pronunciation

The cruise was initially scheduled to set sail in May following the company's acquisition of Fred Olsen Cruise Lines' more than 30-year-old Braemar vessel, now renamed Villa Vie Odyssey , in December 2023.

However, Villa Vie has said issues like the aging ship's rudder stocks and recertification have since delayed its departure.

Mikael Petterson, the founder and CEO of Villa Vie, told Business Insider in an email in September his "best guess" is that the residential vessel would set sail on September 9 or 10 with some changes to the itinerary.

"But it's a moving target if it's either of those days," he said.

The uncertainty isn't worrying would-be residents Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin.

cruise liner pronunciation

The couple, both 54, uprooted their lives in Maui, Hawaii, in the spring to move onto Villa Vie Odyssey in May. Since then, they — along with another 100 to 150 guests — have stayed in the UK in anticipation of its departure.

Residents can spend their days on Odyssey but aren't allowed to stay overnight yet. In the interim, Petterson said the company is providing these would-be residents with lodging, shuttles to and from the ship, food, and drinks.

"We're stuck in the harbor, but we've met some really cool people from all walks of life," Bodin told BI. "We all have something in common. We're a little crazy and want to see the world."

'We went pretty much every day for two weeks and spent all day there until they kicked us off,' Canen said.

cruise liner pronunciation

Canen spent much of these two weeks at Villa Vie Odyssey's business center, designed for residents like her who plan to work remotely at sea.

According to the couple's video tour of the ship — posted on their aptly named " Living Life on a Cruise " YouTube channel — the coworking space has shared desks, private offices, and conference rooms.

Villa Vie said the ship is also equipped with Starlink , an increasingly common amenity on cruise vessels.

Bodin, however, preferred to edit their YouTube videos in the observatory lounge.

cruise liner pronunciation

The observatory is one of five bars and lounges on Odyssey. As its name suggests, the bright space has large windows with sprawling views of the ship's surroundings.

It's also furnished with a piano, which Bodin said has been frequented by a fellow resident and skilled pianist. "I'm sitting there getting a private piano concert."

That's not to say Villa Vie hasn't been providing its guests with professional onboard entertainment.

cruise liner pronunciation

According to the couple's video , Villa Vie Odyssey has hosted live bands at the Coral Club and had a large Olympics viewing screen at the Neptune Lounge.

In the meantime, residents also have an open bar, like the one at Morning Light Pub.

cruise liner pronunciation

"They're schmoozing us a bit to keep us happy," Bodin said. "They're almost being too serviced-minded. I don't need to be pampered all the time."

Besides drinks, the roomy watering hole is home to the ship's dartboard, which joins the outdoor shuffleboard, stack of board games, and, of course, pickleball court as onboard activity options.

Like any traditional cruise ship, Odyssey also has a fitness center, spa, and modern pool deck with two jacuzzis.

cruise liner pronunciation

But unlike most cruise vessels, guests have access to the ship's laundry room.

Laundry could be one of the only chores guests have to do, but even then, it's not required.

Villa Vie said it'll provide residents with laundry and housekeeping services twice a week.

No need to cook or clean either — the ship has 3 restaurants, 2 of which are complementary.

cruise liner pronunciation

In the morning, travelers like Canen and Bodin can wake up to the buffet at Palms Cafe, which offers breakfast options such as bread, fruits, cheeses, and an omelet station.

For dinner, the couple said they've been especially partial to the Grill's "really good barbecue."

To residents like Canen and Bodin, these spaces aren't just bars and lounges — they're living rooms.

cruise liner pronunciation

As for their bedroom, the duo will be slumbering in their "obstructed view cabin."

The room is small, and a lifeboat obstructs its view, but they've already started to make it their home.

They've added risers under their bed to create additional storage. They also plan to remove the pullman bed to make space for a large world map, which they'll annotate as they continue their global journey.

Canen and Bodin declined to disclose the price of their accommodation, but windowless inside cabins are currently listed at $100,000, while those with ocean views are $50,000 more.

They'll also have to pay $3,500 in monthly fees.

cruise liner pronunciation

Still, Canen said life on Maui was "way more expensive" than the Odyssey. "We're traveling on a budget. It's very affordable for the two of us."

"Why do I live in Maui when I could travel the world?"
