Tommy Fleetwood ended a three-year winless run on the DP World Tour by completing a dramatic title defence at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa.

Fleetwood overturned a three-stroke deficit during a marathon Sunday at Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, where the final round was halted for over three hours due to thunderstorms, mixing an eagle and four birdies with a lone bogey to card a five-under 66.

The Englishman ended the week on 11 under and a shot clear of playing partner Ryan Fox, who bogeyed the final hole to miss out on the chance to leapfrog Rory McIlroy at the top of the season-long DP World Tour rankings.

Fleetwood's victory gave him his sixth DP World Tour title and first since winning the same event in 2019, with the past two editions cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, while his success lifts him to fourth in the DP World Tour standings heading into the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

"It has been a great week," Fleetwood said. "I already had so many amazing memories with this place and felt like I had such a great connection to it, so this [win] just added to that."

Looking forward to the DP World Tour Championship, he said: "I think everybody's goal on the tour is always to make it to the final event of the year. That never changes. I'm really excited to go and play.

"If you can find form coming into the end of the year, it's always great. I've spent many years where you're coming to the end of the year and you've played so much you're tired, you're knackered and you just basically get through these weeks, which can make such a difference to the year," he continued.

How Fleetwood completed his title defence

Fleetwood made his early move by taking advantage of the par-five second and posting back-to-back gains from the fifth, lifting him alongside overnight co-leader Rasmus Hojgaard on 10 under, while Fox fired four consecutive birdies from the seventh shortly after the weather delay.

Shubhankar Sharma carded a front-nine 32 and started his back nine with a birdie before dropping a shot at the next, while Fleetwood responded to missing an eight-footer to save par at the 12th by chipping in from the dirt for eagle at the par-five 14th.

Fleetwood and Sharma both birdied the 14th to join Fox on 11 under, with the trio locked in a three-way tie for the lead until Sharma failed to get up and down from the sand at the 16th to make the first of back-to-back bogeys.

Fox lost his share of the lead when he bogeyed the challenging par-four last after a wayward tee shot, as Fleetwood almost holed from 50 feet before tapping in for a par to complete an emotional victory.

"I played great and didn't miss a shot until the 18th," Fox said. "I certainly would've like to have played the 18th a little bit better and made Tommy work a little bit harder, but it's an incredibly tough golf course to play down the stretch.

"All of us were there or thereabouts with three holes to play, but Tommy was the one who held it together. Fair play to him. If you had given me second at the start of the week, I definitely would've taken it."

Sharma finished two strokes back in third ahead of Scotland's Richie Ramsay, who bogeyed his final two holes, while Christiaan Bezuidenhout claimed fifth spot on seven under with Sebastian Soderberg.

Hojgaard stumbled mid-round and had to settle for a share of eighth after a four-over 76, with Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald finishing tied-13th following closing rounds of 73 and 75.

The DP World Tour season reaches its climax next week at the DP World Tour Championship, with Featured Group coverage beginning on Thursday from 6am on Sky Sports Golf ahead of full coverage from 7pm.

Tommy Fleetwood sits through awkward Big Brother-style interview after DP World Tour win

Tommy Fleetwood won the DP World Tour's first event of the year, the Dubai Invitational, on the final hole after capitalising on a rollercoaster round from Rory McIlroy

Tommy Fleetwood sits in an armchair with the Dubai Invitational trophy in his lap

  • 17:06, 14 Jan 2024

Dubai Invitational champion Tommy Fleetwood had to awkwardly sit through an interview with what sounded like an AI robot in 'The Green Room' after winning the year's first DP World Tour event.

Fleetwood, 32, finished one shot clear of Rory McIlroy and Thirston Lawrence in the inaugural tournament at the Dubai Creek Resort. Birding the final two holes saw him surge past his Ryder Cup teammate - who carded a bogey on the last hole after hooking into the water with a one-shot lead - to take the victory.

The win is Fleetwood's seventh on the European Tour and first in over a year since the 2022 Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa . After hoisting the hefty trophy, he faced questions inside the Big Brother -style 'Green Room'.

Sitting down with the trophy perched on his lap in something akin to the infamous diary room chair, he fielded questions. After being welcomed back, he was asked: "How are you feeling?"

Fleetwood looked perplexed before replying: "Great, yeah, really, really good," before asking the artificial intelligence-generated-sounding feminine voice: "What do we call you, by the way - just call you Green Room?"

After establishing that is what it goes by, he continued: "Feels nice. This thing's heavy (the trophy), but I'll fall asleep with this thing on my lap. I'm very comfy right now." He was then asked about his mistake on the 16th when he dropped a shot. "Frustrated," he acknowledged.

For all the latest on news, politics, sports, and showbiz from the USA, go to The Mirror US .

"Being brutally honest, I think you learn every time you play and learn every time you're in contention, and I think, as frustrated as I was, I'd have been more annoyed if I let it get to me when I had two holes to play. You just never know what's gonna happen."

On what was going through his head on the winning putt, he explained: "As I was looking at it, I felt like I was probably gonna make it.

"But also, I remember the way Rory [McIlroy] finished in Scotland [at last year's Scottish Open], and I was playing with him, and there was just something about the putt that seemed very similar to that one he holed, and I just thought, 'feel like it's probably my time.'

"It felt great. It was a brilliant feeling. Of course, you're playing against one of your friends, and you compete in the right way with each other. And yeah, it was just a lovely feeling knocking that one in." The Green Room then congratulated Fleetwood before asking if there was anything more he wanted to add. He obliged.

"This is this is cool," Fleetwood said while looking down at the trophy in his lap. "I'm glad I finally won with the whole family there. I've actually never won with my wife and all the kids there - Mo, our middle boy, has missed out a couple of times, so I've been trying to win with him there, so that was really cool and very satisfying.

"Maybe I'll just chill in here for a bit. Savour it. And then go to dinner, I guess. This is nice. This is cool."

Tommy Fleetwood may have just done something the Old Course has never seen

Old Tom Morris would have been proud of this shot Tommy Fleetwood just pulled off at St Andrews before the Dunhill Links Championship.

dp world tour tommy fleetwood

We've seen many things at St. Andrews' famous Road Hole on the Old Course over the years - but Tommy Fleetwood may have just accomplished a first.

Fleetwood, 31, is playing the Dunhill Links Championship at the Home of Golf on the DP World Tour  this week.

Much of the chatter before the event, of course, was about the enduring saga of the  LIV Golf Invitational Series .

Related: Bryson DeChambeau addresses LIV Golf critics

A posse of LIV players have pitched up in Scotland. Rory McIlroy now appears to have welcomed the idea of peace talks with Greg Norman's league.

However, it didn't stop the Northern Irishman from claiming that LIV are still making up their own rules, despite urging a swift resolution.

But back to Fleetwood, who has been paired with LIV player Branden Grace this week.

In his practice round, Fleetwood found himself in the familiar territory over the back of the green.

Fleetwood, who has won five times on the European Tour, played a magnificent chip but what happened next beggared belief.

St Andrews is a magical place!! pic.twitter.com/uJI2w7BxcU — Tommy Fleetwood (@TommyFleetwood1) September 28, 2022

Ain't that something?! Knocking in your own pitch shot is one thing, but holing a second ball... that is pure wizardry right there.

As he rightly points out, St Andrews is definitely a magical place.

It's good to see Fleetwood back on the fairways. He took a brief stint away from the game at back at the back end of last season following a family bereavement.

Tommy Fleetwood may have just done something the Old Course has never seen

He returned at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and took the early lead with a superb 64. The tournament, as you might remember, was reduced to 54 holes following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Fleetwood struggled in the second and third rounds, shooting consecutive rounds of 73 to finish 67th. Shane Lowry won.

The Dunhill Links Championship begins on Thursday. The tournament pairs a professional with an amateur and uses the Old Course, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.

Fleetwood holds the course record at Kingsbarns, where he shot 63 in 2017.

2024 BMW Championship odds, picks, field: Surprising predictions by golf model that's nailed 13 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the bmw championship 2024 10,000 times and revealed its surprising pga tour golf picks.

rory-mcilroy-pga-golf-getty-images.jpg

Scottie Scheffler is on his way to capping off an amazing season, but first he needs a solid showing at the 2024 BMW Championship, which tees off Thursday at 9:25 a.m. ET. The world No. 1 returned to PGA action last week after bringing home the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but came up just a bit short as he finished solo fourth at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He hasn't played at Castle Pines since 2006, however ranking fourth on the PGA Tour in total driving (91) should give him a boost in the thin mountain air at the BMW Championship 2024.

Scheffler is the +330 favorite this week on the PGA odds board, followed by Xander Schauffele (+550), Rory McIlroy (+1200) and Collin Morikawa (+1400). Before locking in your 2024 BMW Championship picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 13 majors entering the weekend, including the 2024 Masters -- its third Masters in a row -- and this year's PGA Championship and U.S. Open. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now with the 2024 BMW Championship field locked in, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 BMW Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 BMW Championship: McIlroy (12-1), a 26-time winner on the PGA Tour and one of the top favorites, stumbles this week and doesn't even crack the top five. McIlroy has been wildly inconsistent after securing a runner-up finish at the U.S. Open in June. He finished T-4 at the Genesis Scottish Open but missed the cut at the British Open and is coming off a T-68 showing at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

McIlroy has struggled with accuracy off the tee this season, ranking 83rd in driving accuracy (60.94%). He's also been inaccurate with his irons, ranking 105th in greens in regulation percentage (65.66%). He's not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in the 2024 BMW Championship field. See who else to fade here .

Another surprise: Tommy Fleetwood, a 30-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. The Olympic silver medalist ranks ninth on the PGA Tour in total driving (107) which gives him a leg up on the competition when it comes to the high altitude in Denver. Castle Pines has also been likened to Augusta National, where Fleetwood finished T3 at the 2024 Masters.

The Englishman, who has three top-10 finishes this season, has also had his fair share of success in previous BMW Championship runs. He has finished in the top-25 in all three of his previous starts at the tournament, including an eighth-place finish in 2018. His current form plus his previous runs in this event make it clear why the model is high on Fleetwood to finish strong at the 2024 BMW Championship.  See who else to back here .

How to make 2024 BMW Championship picks

The model is also targeting two other golfers with odds of 30-1 or longer who will make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big.  You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 BMW Championship, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the BMW Championship 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected BMW Championship leaderboard , all from the model that's nailed 13 golf majors, including the last three Masters and three majors this year.

The BMW Championship marks the second leg of the three-event FedExCup Playoffs, with a 50-player starting field that will be reduced to 30 players for next week’s TOUR Championship at a recently renovated East Lake.

This week’s Colorado backdrop is new to the BMW Championship but an old friend to the TOUR, as Castle Pines Golf Club previously hosted The International from 1986 to 2006, with a series of dramatic finishes including an all-timer from Steve Lowery (more on that later). The Denver-area venue, situated high above sea level, will pose unique questions to the top 50 players on the season-long FedExCup standings (who have all qualified for next year’s eight Signature Events).

It's an esteemed field and setting for the PGA TOUR’s longest-running non-major, with stakes including the race for the No. 1 spot on the FedExCup into the TOUR Championship (yet to be decided), the final week of automatic qualification for the Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal, and the sure-to-be-volatile top-30 bubble.

Without further ado, here are The Five storylines to follow at the BMW Championship.

1. Chase for No. 1 seed at East Lake

Only two players have a mathematical chance to assume the No. 1 spot on the FedExCup into next week’s TOUR Championship at East Lake, but they’re the two players you might expect – Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele. The two have been a class unto themselves in 2024, as Scheffler has notched six TOUR titles including the Masters and THE PLAYERS Championship, with Schauffele recording major titles at the PGA Championship and The Open Championship.

Xander Schauffele on personal motivation for individual nature of golf

Expect both players to be in the mix at Castle Pines (Schauffele finished T2 at last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, with Scheffler taking solo fourth), and perhaps a game-within-the-game down the stretch.

2. Drama around top-30 bubble

The top 30 players on the FedExCup standings after the BMW Championship will advance to the TOUR Championship, maintain their hopes of the season-long FedExCup title (the Starting Strokes format assures that no player will face more than a 10-shot deficit to start the week), and likely qualify for all four major championships in 2025.

With the BMW Championship’s starting field of 50 players, it means just 60% of the field will advance to East Lake. And with quadruple FedExCup points on offer (2,000 points to the winner), it promises plenty of volatility in the standings at Castle Pines.

Despite playing through a torn labrum, Denny McCarthy finished ninth at last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship to move from No. 45 to No. 30 on the FedExCup standings, and he’ll play the role of bubble boy as the BMW Championship gets underway. It’s not an unfamiliar spot for the veteran pro, who rode the bubble at last year’s BMW (contested at Olympia Fields outside Chicago) before finishing No. 33 on the FedExCup, narrowly missing his first TOUR Championship berth. McCarthy will be motivated to not let that history repeat.

Just outside the bubble are No. 31 Tommy Fleetwood (three points behind McCarthy) and No. 32 Chris Kirk (19 points behind McCarthy), with other notables needing a big week at Castle Pines including No. 36 Matt Fitzpatrick, No. 37 Will Zalatoris, No. 41 Adam Scott and No. 43 Max Homa. There’s a silver lining for those who don’t advance to East Lake – all BMW Championship qualifiers have guaranteed a spot in all 2025 Signature Events – but that won’t lessen the sting Sunday afternoon for the 20 players who finish outside the mark.

3. Late-stage Presidents Cup auditions

The BMW Championship marks the final event before this year’s Presidents Cup automatic qualifiers are finalized. The top six on each of the U.S. Team standings and International Team standings after the BMW will qualify for next month’s biennial competition at Royal Montreal. After next week’s TOUR Championship, each side will make six captain’s picks to round out the roster.

The current top six on the American side: Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay and Sahith Theegala. The next six are Tony Finau, Russell Henley, Max Homa, Brian Harman, Sam Burns and Akshay Bhatia – with notables outside the top 12 who might be considered including Justin Thomas, Billy Horschel and the fast-ascending Davis Thompson.

The current top six on the International side: Hideki Matsuyama, Tom Kim, Sungjae Im, Jason Day, Adam Scott and Byeong Hun An. In a wild twist, five of the next nine names on the standings are Canadian (Corey Conners, Nick Taylor, Adam Hadwin, Taylor Pendrith and Mackenzie Hughes), jockeying with Min Woo Lee, Cam Davis, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Si Woo Kim.

Each captain faces a series of questions in determining their captain’s picks, with the next two weeks allowing contenders to make their closing arguments. For U.S. Team Captain Jim Furyk, does he layer up with proven veterans in international team competition, or will he bring in a contingent of fresh faces? International Team Captain Mike Weir must figure out how Canada-heavy to layer his roster, which could make for a raucous home-field advantage at Royal Montreal, or does he dig into the stats to ensure the most in-form players will don the International kits? It will make for fascinating fodder across the next two weeks, with the Sunday drama at the BMW largely focused on the six automatic qualifiers for each side – but also with the next level of contenders building their cases.

4. Keep your calculators handy

The PGA TOUR rarely travels to significant elevation (pour one out for Chapultepec), but that will change at the BMW Championship, as Castle Pines is situated 6,200 feet above sea level and plays to 8,130 yards. The course is expected to play roughly 7,300 yards after adjustment, a more typical length on the TOUR circuit, but the elevation change will require players to answer atypical questions. Conventional wisdom suggests a ball flies 10% further at altitude, but that isn’t always exactly the case, and the adjustment range could differ based on outside factors such as distance and loft.

PGA TOUR players aren’t mathematicians by trade (aside from perhaps Corey Conners, who famously majored in actuarial mathematics at Kent State), but players and their caddies might need to keep those calculations top-of-mind as they strive to perfect their distance control at Castle Pines.

“The tough thing with elevation is it's not as consistent as sea level,” said Colorado native Wyndham Clark, who will make his first TOUR start in his home state this week. “So if you hit your 7-iron always about 185 at sea level, it constantly goes 185. Here at altitude, now let's call it 205. Well, it can go 205 one shot and then 210 the next shot and then 200 the next shot. There's a little inconsistency in the thin air and altitude depending on how high you hit it. If anyone seems to err, go long or short, it's probably because of trajectory. That's going to be the challenge. Everyone is going to have a good idea of how far they're hitting the clubs, but you can sometimes just hit one forever in Colorado.”

Patrick Cantlay on what's different about playing at elevation

Clark and his peers will embrace that challenge at Castle Pines.

5. The next Steve Lowery?

In one of the most absurd, dramatic finishes in PGA TOUR history, Steve Lowery carded an albatross and a hole-out eagle on the back nine of the 2002 International at Castle Pines – in addition to an up-and-down from a half-submerged lie in a water hazard – en route to nearly tracking down Rich Beem for the victory. (Beem finished 1 point ahead of Lowery in the Modified Stableford format; Beem proceeded to win the PGA Championship at Hazeltine two weeks later.)

Greatest final round ever? 2002 International | Rich Beem and Steve Lowery

This week’s BMW Championship will feature 72 holes of traditional stroke-play, sans Stableford, but Lowery’s story is indicative of Castle Pines’ unpredictability. It should make for dramatic theater, both atop the leaderboard and near the top-30 bubble. For potential pivotal holes, look to Lowery’s heroics for clues – he holed a wedge for eagle at the par-4 15th, then he dunked a 6-iron for albatross from 217 yards at the par-5 17th. (His water scramble came at the par-5 14th, after removing his right shoe and sock for the splash shot.)

“It doesn’t get any better than that,” Beem told Lowery afterwards.

The only caveat to Lowery’s effort – he didn’t in fact win the tournament, as his birdie effort on the 72nd hole narrowly burned the edge. This year’s potential Lowery will look to pair heroics with hardware.

Inside Tommy Fleetwood’s week as a caddie for his stepson on the Challenge Tour

Days on from his third event in as many weeks on the PGA TOUR, Tommy Fleetwood showed everyone why he is such a universally well-regarded figure in golf by caddying for his stepson on the European Challenge Tour.

After a three-week stretch playing in the United States, including at the Masters Tournament in the first men’s Major Championship of the season, Fleetwood arrived in the Middle East last week with an unfamiliar but equally exciting opportunity.

With victory at the Ras Al Khaimah Men's Open - run by the Emirates Golf Federation - at Al Hamra Golf Club in February, Fleetwood’s 17-year-old stepson Oscar Craig earned his place at the Challenge Tour’s UAE Challenge in Abu Dhabi.

From that moment, and with the dates aligning to suit his schedule, Fleetwood was intent on being by Craig’s side walking the fairways to provide his vast knowledge at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club.

While he didn’t have to, Fleetwood wanted to and that is testament to his character. The fact Craig went on to make the cut as an amateur only made the week extra special.

“However good a time he has had, I have had a better one caddying for Oscar,” Fleetwood told the European Challenge Tour.

“Oscar said when he made the cut it was more than he could have ever dreamt of. I just think that is one of the most beautiful things you could ever hear, and he's done great.”

After making the cut on his Challenge Tour debut, Dubai-based Craig said his “emotions were all over the place” during the final few holes of the second round.

With a par down the last hole needed to ensure his progress over the weekend, he made a birdie to be the only amateur to play all four rounds.

Fleetwood still to those day cites his memories of playing on the Challenge Tour as among the best in his career, one that has seen him win seven DP World Tour titles, play among the elite on the PGA TOUR, compete at the Major Championships and represent Team Europe at Ryder Cups with distinction.

I think I might even have become a better player by caddying and learnt a few things

Having turned professional in 2010, Fleetwood played a full season in 2011 before progressing to the DP World Tour the following year. Now, he hopes Craig can go on to achieve his own dreams in the game.

“It is one of the great things about the Challenge Tour. The Tour travels the world,” said Fleetwood.

“Wherever they go I think locally, to give those invites… is such a great opportunity for them [players] to have their eyes open to professional golf.”

He added: “Having our boys who are working so hard at it, and they are clearly dreaming of a future in the game. To see their work pay off is great.”

But it isn’t just teenager Craig who will have taken a great deal from the experience. Even with what he has achieved in the game, Fleetwood is always learning and believes experiencing the game from a different perspective can help him in his own career.

“I think I might even have become a better player by caddying and learnt a few things,” he reflected.

“I think I should play with the attitude that I have when I caddy! As a caddie you see the right shot to play as a player. As a player you feel you can pull off any shot and want to give it a go so I think you are much more sensible as a caddie.

"I think your attitude stays more neutral because you have to make sure your player stays that way. There has been a lot to take away from it."
