Sometimes travel plans don’t go as expected. For this reason, many travelers purchase a travel insurance policy before a trip begins. Travel insurance can help you avoid losing money by reimbursing you for pre-paid travel costs for covered incidents when your travel plans get disrupted, and you qualify for a covered reason.

While travel insurance can be beneficial, you may wonder, can you cancel travel insurance and get a refund if you change your mind? In some situations, you may be able to cancel your travel insurance policy and get an insurance premium refund. We’ve outlined the essential details below so you know what to expect if you need a refund.

» Learn more: What to know before buying travel insurance

Can you get a travel insurance refund?

Yes, getting a travel insurance refund is possible, depending on when you cancel the policy. To qualify for a premium refund, most insurance companies require the policy to be canceled during the review period outlined in the policy terms.

Otherwise, you won’t be eligible for a refund on your travel insurance. That’s why paying attention to this timeline is essential when buying coverage.

Some insurers call this timeframe a money-back guarantee period, while others call it a review or free look period. The timing varies by policy and insurer, but it’s often between 10 to 15 days.

This period gives travelers time to review the policy documents to ensure it meets their coverage needs. If your travel insurance policy has a money-back guarantee or review period, you can cancel for any reason and receive a full refund within the timeframe if you haven’t filed a claim or departed for your trip yet.

But you won’t get a premium refund if you cancel your policy after the review period. Reviewing the policy terms before purchasing a travel insurance policy is recommended so you know what to expect before buying coverage. You can find details regarding this review timeline in the policy paperwork.

To qualify for a refund when canceling your policy during the review period outlined in your travel insurance policy, you must not have filed a claim or started your trip yet.

Do you qualify for a refund if your trip is delayed or canceled?

You may wonder, is travel insurance refundable if the trip is canceled? Many comprehensive travel insurance policies include trip delay, trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage.

You must meet the conditions of the coverage outlined in your policy and have a covered reason to qualify for reimbursement for prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs or additional trip expenses that occur due to covered delays, interruptions, and cancellations. But you won’t be eligible for a refund of travel insurance policy premiums.

CFAR travel insurance add-on offers greater flexibility

If you want a more flexible solution, you may want to add Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance (CFAR) coverage to your travel insurance policy.

Some travelers prefer the added protection that CFAR coverage offers. This supplemental coverage costs extra but provides more flexibility for cancellations. However, not every insurance company offers it. You should also be aware that many insurance providers require this coverage to be purchased within a set number of days of making your initial trip payment.

CFAR coverage can provide a partial refund for eligible nonrefundable prepaid travel expenses. You can cancel for any reason, as the name suggests, but you must cancel within the timeframe listed in your policy.

Canceling the day of, for example, is usually not allowed. Many insurers require travelers to cancel at least two days before their trip to qualify for a partial refund.

» Learn more: The guide to Cancel for Any Reason travel insurance

Reasons why a traveler might cancel their travel insurance policy

Some travelers cancel their travel insurance policy because it doesn’t meet their needs. During the review period mentioned above, travelers should review the terms and conditions to ensure the chosen policy meets their expectations and is a good fit for their trip.

But that’s not the only reason a traveler might consider canceling their policy. Some travelers may wish to cancel their insurance policy if they’ve decided they no longer want to take a trip due to work schedule changes, sickness or other personal reasons.

To cancel and be eligible for reasons like sickness or job schedule changes, travelers need CFAR coverage in their travel insurance policy to receive a partial refund for eligible prepaid trip costs.

How to cancel a travel insurance policy

Contact your insurance company directly to cancel your travel insurance policy. Some insurance providers allow you to cancel your coverage online or by phone. But some insurers require policyholders to cancel their insurance policy in writing. Your best bet is to check with your insurer to learn more about the cancellation process.

Final thoughts regarding a travel insurance refund

If you plan to purchase a travel insurance policy for your next trip, review all policy terms so you can decide early on if it’s the right coverage for you. You will also want to know the outlined timeline to cancel if necessary.

If you want to boost your coverage and be eligible for a partial refund if you get sick or change your plans before departing for your trip, you may want to consider adding CFAR coverage to your policy. Doing this can give you greater peace of mind and more flexibility.

Travel insurance and assistance services for US residents

Travel is rewarding, but sometimes things don’t go as expected. People can get sick, flights can get canceled, and bags can go missing. To help protect you financially, there’s travel insurance and assistance services.

Airbnb guests who live in the United States can add travel insurance and assistance services on the checkout page or after booking. The policy is underwritten by Generali US Branch and offered by Airbnb Insurance Agency LLC.

Don’t live in the US? Travel insurance is also available to residents of certain Canadian provinces , and residents of the United Kingdom and certain countries in the European Union . Reservation insurance is available to residents of France. And guests everywhere can purchase travel insurance outside of Airbnb, directly through a travel insurance company’s website or by shopping around on a comparison site.

Adding insurance to your reservation

If your reservation is eligible, you’ll be given the option to add travel insurance and assistance services on the checkout page. You’ll also be given the option to add travel insurance and assistance services after you book—just look for the Add to your trip button on your booking confirmation email and reservation details page.

Before adding travel insurance and assistance services to your reservation, be sure to review all the details to make sure it’s right for you.

Shortly after your travel insurance and assistance services purchase is confirmed, you’ll get an email that includes a copy of your plan, as well as a link to your plan details page, where you can cancel your plan, start a claim, and more.

Making changes to your reservation

Your travel insurance and assistance services plan will be automatically updated if the dates of your reservation or guest count change and there is no claim on the existing policy. If the change impacts the total price of your reservation, you’ll be charged or refunded an adjusted amount for your travel insurance and assistance services.

What’s covered

  • Travel delay: Get reimbursed up to $750 per person if your trip is delayed for 24 hours or more for a covered reason, such as a flight delay or stolen passport. Covered expenses may include meals, a place to stay, and parking costs.

  • Emergency transportation : Get reimbursed up to $100,000 per policy for medical evacuation, and certain other expenses if you get sick or injured while on your trip.

Coverage for COVID-19

Although pandemics aren’t covered by travel insurance, COVID-19 may be covered in some situations because it’s an illness.

Please note that if you file a claim due to COVID-19, you’ll be asked to provide documentation showing that you, a family member (for example, your child), or someone staying with you at the Airbnb accommodation tested positive while under the virtual or in-person supervision of a qualified medical professional.

Coverage for pre-existing conditions

A pre-existing medical condition is an illness or injury that first manifested itself, got worse, or required treatment in the 180-day period before the insurance was purchased.

Pre-existing conditions are covered as long as you buy insurance within 15 days of booking, and while you’re medically able to travel. (Note that the 15-day requirement doesn’t apply to New York residents, who must only be medically able to travel at the time of purchasing insurance.)

Consult your policy for further details.

Assistance services

Each plan comes with assistance services like a 24-hour emergency hotline, concierge services, and roadside assistance. The amount you’ll be charged for travel protection includes a fee for these services.

Who’s covered

Each plan covers you and up to 9 people staying with you at the Airbnb accommodation. These people don’t have to be added to the Airbnb reservation or named on the policy in order to be covered, and there are no age restrictions.

Canceling your plan

US residents can cancel their travel insurance and assistance services plan within 10 days of purchase for a full premium refund. Please note that you can’t cancel your plan after you’ve departed on your trip or started a claim, even if you’re within your cancellation period.

Frequently Asked Questions

What destination do i select when getting a quote if i am spending the same number of days at each port.

When selecting a destination for your travel insurance quote, pick the location where you will spend the most time and choose the listed location nearest to your destination. If you are spending equal time at each port during your cruise, select whichever you are visiting first.

How does travel insurance work?

If something happen during your trip and you need to use your travel insurance, you’ll need to file a claim to be reimbursed. We have a page that explains how to start a claim , a great resource for learning more about the claims process.

Let’s say your baggage is delayed* and you need to buy clothes and toiletries, you would submit a claim to seek reimbursement. Travel insurance comes in handy in scenarios like this.

Oftentimes, travel insurance is offered when buying a cruise, airfare or booking a vacation rental. We encourage customers to pay attention to the fine print when considering insurance provided by travel suppliers. For example, a cruise line’s travel insurance may not pay cash to cover a cancelled or interrupted cruise, but instead offers credit towards a future cruise. If you prefer cash reimbursement, that’s reason to consider purchasing directly from a travel insurance provider instead.

We recommend bringing a print out of your plan documents with you when traveling so if you are affected by a storm and lose power or can’t connect to the internet, you’ll still know what number to call and what instructions to follow.

* Baggage Delay coverage can only be claimed if the delay lasts for the amount of time specified in the  Schedule of Benefits

How Travel Insurance Can Help

Every voyage deserves the added protection of travel insurance designed with cruising in mind. Travel insurance can help protect your vacation investment from certain unforeseen events that could upset your travel plans and cost you. Trip insurance plans from Generali Global Assistance include coverages that are most important to cruise travelers.

Find the Plan That Fits Your Trip Best

There’s no better way to understand how travel insurance and assistance can help protect you and your trip than reading real life examples from fellow travelers.

When is the best time to get travel insurance?

We suggest you buy a travel insurance plan when you make your first trip payment, like airfare or a cruise. That way you have a long coverage period in case you need to cancel your trip. Later on, you can add coverage to the same plan for your hotel, tours and other pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs. It’s best to contact us to add coverage soon after you make new trip payments to be sure you have coverage for your full trip cost.

What Generali Global Assistance Is Known For

Generali Global Assistance keeps things simple by offering three main travel insurance plans for consumers: the basic Standard plan, the mid-tier Preferred plan and the Premium plan with superior coverage. These plans stand out in several areas, including their relatively high limits for emergency medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation, robust coverage amounts for travel delays, included concierge services, and 24-hour travel assistance.

The company's Premium plan offers the most coverage and highest policy limits by far, as well as access to several add-ons you can't purchase with other plans. For example, the Premium plan from Generali Global Assistance includes coverage for preexisting medical conditions, but only if travel insurance is purchased within 24 hours of making a final trip payment. This is unique from many other plans that cover preexisting conditions, which typically require you to purchase travel insurance within a few weeks of making an initial trip deposit instead.

This top-tier plan also includes rental car coverage automatically, and it's the only plan from Generali that lets consumers add on cancel for any reason (CFAR) travel insurance . With this type of insurance, individuals can cancel their trip for any reason and get part of their upfront costs back.

With CFAR coverage from Generali Global Assistance, however, travelers are only reimbursed up to 60% for prepaid travel expenses like airfare, hotels and tours. This is less than you'll get with many other travel insurance plans that let you buy CFAR coverage and reimburse at 70% to 80% of prepaid trip costs. Not only that, but you can only add CFAR coverage to a plan if you purchase travel insurance within 24 hours of making an initial deposit on your trip.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance for Individual Trips

Generali Global Assistance offers three tiers of travel insurance protection to choose from. The basic Standard plan includes essential coverage with lower limits, and the Preferred and Premium plans offer more coverages with higher limits and more optional benefits.

The chart below highlights what you'll get with each of the travel insurance plans from Generali Global Assistance, plus the policy limits that apply.

As you compare travel insurance plans from Generali Global Assistance, you should know about some of the fine print terms that can apply. The most important details are highlighted below:

  • Baggage delays: This coverage doesn't kick in until at least 24 hours with the Standard plan, 18 hours with Preferred coverage and 12 hours with the Premium plan.
  • Baggage insurance: Items lost in baggage without a receipt are reimbursed at 75% of actual cash value (not replacement value).
  • Sporting equipment: Sports equipment that's lost or stolen in baggage without a receipt will be reimbursed at 75% of actual cash value (not replacement value).
  • Sporting equipment delays: This coverage requires an 18-hour delay with the Preferred plan and a 12-hour delay with the Premium plan.
  • Travel delay coverage: This protection kicks in after a 10-hour delay with Standard plans, a delay of eight or more hours with the Preferred plan, and a six-hour delay with the Premium plan.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance Costs

Costs for travel insurance from Generali Global Assistance vary based on the plan you select, the number of travelers in a plan, the total cost for a trip, the age of travelers and other factors. To help you get an idea of how much you'll pay for a plan, we applied for travel insurance quotes for several different trips that cost between $2,500 and $14,000.

Generali Global Assistance is accredited with the Better Business Bureau, where it also has an A+ rating. However, the company has a very low average star rating of just 1.11 out of 5 stars across 300-plus user reviews on the platform. The company has also closed more than 500 customer complaints with the BBB in the last three years, 258 of which were resolved in the last 12 months.

Generali has a 4.57 rating out of 14,000-plus reviews on InsureMyTrip and a 4.33 rating out of about 4,500 reviews on Squaremouth. On Trustpilot, the company has an average star rating of 3.4 out of 5 stars across more than 400 reviews from past customers. Below, we listed examples of positive and negative user reviews from several platforms that show some of the best and worst attributes of the company.

My experience with Global was very good. The only issue was a computer glitch in their new claim system. It was a little confusing at times but my claim agent was very helpful and helped me get through the process. They settled my claim much faster than I anticipated. It was overall, a good experience. – Katherine via Squaremouth

If I could give this company 0 stars I would. My wife went into labor and they refused to refund us our vacation rental booking because they didn't consider a woman going into labor as an emergency. We even talked to them before canceling and they told us to cancel the whole booking to get our full refund. This is a HORRIBLE company that needs to be investigated thoroughly. Shame on VRBO for using them as a travel insurance company. – Tanner B. via Better Business Bureau

If I could give zero stars I would

If I could give zero stars I would. I think the people (or bots) giving higher stars have not had to make a claim. I was diagnosed with AML and will be hospitalized for a month to receive a stem cell transplant and needed to cancel my trip. I have uploaded all the documentation they requested. I have not been able to talk to an actual person. I have tried 4 different phone numbers and sent emails to the suggested address only to get an automated response. This company is a complete scam! – Denise via Trustpilot

Generali Global 2024 Review

Generali Global Assistance Review

The owner of CSA Travel Protection and Trip Mate, Generali Global Assistance is one of the biggest names in the travel insurance world. Even if you don’t purchase your insurance directly from Generali, odds are certain assurance products — like language assistance, facility finding, or concierge services — are provided by this Italian insurance giant.

Should you purchase your travel insurance from Generali as well? In this review, we’ll dive into what plans Generali Global Assistance offers customers, and who would benefit most from their options.

What is Generali Global Assistance?

As an insurance company, Assicurazoni Generali traces their history back to Trieste, Italy. In 1831, Generali first opened for business as a property insurance company. Over the next 190 years, the company went through several transitions as Italy — and greater Europe — broke up and reformed several times. Today, the company is the largest insurer in Italy, and is the ninth largest insurance company worldwide by value of net premiums written. In Europe, Generali is only behind AXA and Allianz.

Although the company is well known for their variety of insurance products, their entry into the travel market came after the purchase of two well-known travel insurance companies: CSA Travel Protection and Europ Assistance. Pierre Desnos founded Europ Assistance in 1963, offering travelers translation and medical aid when traveling.

CSA Travel Insurance was formed in 1991 as one of the pioneers of the travel insurance industry. Their first product covered trip cancellation for tourists going abroad, allowing them to recover certain costs in the event a major life event forced them to stay home.

Generali purchased the assets of Europ Assistance in 2001, followed by CSA Travel Protection years later. By 2016, the Italian insurance giant began rebranding CSA and Europ Assistance USA as Generali Global Assistance, giving them a unified brand in the marketplace. Three years later, Generali would go on to acquire Trip Mate, further expanding their reach into the travel insurance market.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance Options

Generali Global Assistance offers three levels of travel insurance policies for international travelers, ranging from Standard to Preferred. The best plan for your travels will depend on your destination, planned activities, and how much your trip costs.

Generali Standard Travel Insurance

Built for travelers on a budget, Generali’s Standard travel insurance plan covers all the basics. Trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage loss and medical emergency coverage. This plan is designed for those taking a smaller trip, such as a cruise or a resort vacation.

Generali Preferred Travel insurance

Improving off the Standard plan, Generali Preferred travel insurance offers additional benefits for those taking a longer or more expensive trip. In addition to higher benefit maximums, the plan offers coverage for lost or delayed sporting equipment, operator financial insolvency, as well as accidental death and dismemberment aboard a common carrier.

Generali Premium Travel Insurance

For travelers who are taking an expensive trip abroad with a cruise line or tour company, Generali’s Premium travel insurance plan has the highest benefit maximums and most add-on options, including coverage for pre-existing conditions. Alongside up to $1 million in emergency assistance and transportation, travelers can also buy coverage for cancellation for any reason.

What’s Covered Under a Typical Company Plan

All three Generali Global Assistance travel insurance policies offer a base package of benefits to help travelers navigate the most common frustrations they may face. They include trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage delay, and emergency assistance and transportation.

  • Trip cancellation: If an emergency at home prevents you from going on vacation — such as a death in the family, or accident on the way to the airport — trip cancellation benefits can help you recover some non-refundable costs.
  • Travel delay: Irregular operations and bad weather can stop planes and trains from leaving the station. Should a covered situation stop you from traveling, travel delay benefits can reimburse you for certain inconveniences, including meals and spare phone charges.
  • Baggage delay or loss: Although it's uncommon, any bags you check with your airline or cruise operator could get lost in transition. Should your luggage get delayed or even lost, travel insurance may help you recover the cost of your lost items.
  • Emergency medical and dental: You can’t predict when an accident will send you to the hospital. Your health insurance at home won’t cover a hospital stay abroad, but a travel insurance policy could guarantee payment to the provider, and reimburse your costs for care.
  • Emergency assistance and transportation: Hiring air ambulances to take incapacitated travelers home can cost $20,000 or more. If a doctor orders an air ambulance for emergency travel, Generali insurance policies can help you arrange and pay for evacuation.

Are There Additional Coverage Options?

Generali offers additional add-on coverage, but the options depend on the plan you ultimately choose. While the Standard and Preferred plans allow you to add rental car insurance coverage, the Premium plan also gives the flexibility of a cancel for any reason option.

  • Rental car damage: An optional add-on for the Standard and Preferred plan, the rental car damage coverage provides a maximum benefit of $25,000 per person, per plan if your auto is damaged by collision, theft, vandalism, or natural disaster. Rental car damage is included in the Premium plan.
  • Cancel for any reason: Only available with the Premium plan, cancel for any reason allows travelers to recover some of their non-refundable costs if they change their mind about their trip. This benefit allows travelers to recover 60 percent of covered costs.

How to Buy Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance

Generali travel insurance is available through the major travel insurance marketplaces, including Squaremouth, InsureMyTrip.com, and TravelInsurance.com. Travelers can also purchase Generali Global Assistance plans directly from the company.

To get a quote, travelers can go to the Generali Global Assistance website . The process starts with basic information about their trip, including:

  • Destination
  • Travel dates
  • Number of insured travelers (and their age)
  • State of residence
  • Total trip cost

From there, Generali will issue a quote for all three of their products. If you decide to purchase, you will need to submit some personally-identifiable information, including:

  • Traveler names and dates of birth
  • Primary traveler’s address, phone number, and e-mail address
  • Beneficiary information (for accidental death and dismemberment coverage)
  • Arranged travel with airlines, car rental companies, tour operators or cruise lines
  • Credit card information

Once the purchase is complete, your travel insurance plan will be active on the date of your travel, and documents will be delivered electronically, or in the mail.

How Will I Get my Travel Insurance Documents from Generali?

While most travel insurance providers deliver documents electronically, Generali Global Assistance provides two different options for your convenience. If you choose to receive documents by e-mail, your policy paperwork will arrive shortly after your purchase.

If you would rather have physical documents to pack, you can opt to have your documents delivered via U.S. Mail. While this is a good option if you are months away from your trip, those who are closing in on their departure date may not get their papers in time. Before selecting delivery by mail, be sure you will have enough time to receive them.

Generali Global Assistance Online Security

Transactions on the Generali Global Assistance website are secured by a SHA-256 SSL security connection. The security certificate is provided by DigiCert, one of the largest digital security providers globally.

Generali Global Assistance Reviews and Ratings

Everywhere they are sold, Generali Global Assistance is consistently ranked high by their customers. Customers of Squaremouth give Generali travel insurance an overall rating of 4.1 stars out of five, while InsureMyTrip customers rate them 4.58 stars out of five.

From an independent perspective, the company is accredited with the Better Business Bureau and holds an A+ rating with the consumer advocate. However, the BBB has also received over 500 complaints about the company, mostly about the claims process. At TrustPilot , Generali has a rating of 2.8 stars out of five, based on 11 reviews.

From a financial perspective, Generali maintains a solid profile with AM Best. The insurance giant holds an A (Excellent) financial strength rating, and an A+ (Excellent) long term issuer credit rating.

Pros and Cons of Generali Global Assistance

  • Simple to shop for insurance based on budget and benefits: three products ranging from basic to full-coverage
  • High benefit limits for critical coverage (like trip interruption, emergency medical care, and medical evacuation), even on basic coverage
  • Cancel for any reason buy-up option available on Premium travel insurance plan
  • Prices trend higher compared to other travel insurance products
  • Delay benefits are limited based on the plan you select
  • Only the Premium plan offers coverage for pre-existing conditions

Final Thoughts on Generali Global Assistance

Backed by one of the oldest and most respected insurance companies on the globe, Generali Global Assistance offers three of the best travel plans in the marketplace today. Although they don’t come cheap, their plans offer generous coverage levels for many of the situations that can go wrong. Those who are going on high-priced vacations with tour operators or cruise lines may want to look at Generali as a primary option.

If you are diagnosed with Coronavirus or another sickness and are quarantined, you can be covered. Learn more.

If you are quarantined, but not sick, coverage depends on when you bought your plan and when the loss occurred. Coverage is unavailable if the insurance plan was purchased on or after January 29, 2020. For plans that exclude pandemics, coverage is unavailable for losses that occurred on or after March 11, 2020, the date COVID-19 was formally declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization.

We will accept a positive test result from a testing facility or a positive test result from an at-home test that meets certain requirements . You do not need to have COVID-19 symptoms to qualify for coverage.

In order to qualify for coverage due to sickness, including COVID-19:

You, a Traveling Companion or your Service Animal get Sick after you purchase your plan, must seek the in person treatment of a Physician and can’t travel according to a physician. Or a non-traveling Family Member is hospitalized after you purchase your plan and you are unable to make the trip.

Important Note: Your or your traveling companion’s sickness must first occur after you purchase your plan in order to have coverage. Pre-existing medical conditions are generally excluded from coverage. However, coverage is available with the Premium plan if you purchased your plan prior to or within 24 hours of making Final Payment for your trip, provided other requirements are also met. Review Plan Documents for full details.

Testing and Vaccination

Our plans include “new vaccination requirements” as a covered reason for trip cancellation. If your destination country announces and publishes a new vaccination requirement after you buy travel insurance, and you are medically unable to receive the vaccination, you can be reimbursed for your insured trip cost. This applies when vaccination is a requirement to enter the country, but not in the case of new quarantine rules for unvaccinated travelers.

If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 or another sickness, you can be covered for certain additional unexpected expenses on your trip, such as lodging.

To qualify for COVID-19 sickness coverage, your at-home test must meet certain requirements:

  • You must take your test while your Trip Cancellation coverage is in effect. Trip Cancellation coverage goes into effect at 12:01 a.m. the day after you purchase your plan.
  • The test must be a viral test and have Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). You can view a list of approved nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT) and a list of approved antigen tests .
  • The testing must include a telehealth video call during which someone authorized by the manufacturer supervises the testing procedure in real time.
  • The telehealth provider must issue a report confirming the patient’s identity, the name of the laboratory or healthcare entity, the type of test and the specimen collection date.

See what tests qualify

It depends. If your Coronavirus test comes up positive and you are diagnosed before your trip, you can be covered for Trip Cancellation.

On the other hand, if you cancel your trip because you simply don’t want to go through the testing required, our plans will not cover you unless you purchased Cancel for Any Reason add-on coverage and meet the CFAR requirements .

No. If you do not get tested or do not receive the results in time, our plans do not provide coverage for those situations.
