The Awkward Traveller

Latinx Travel Bloggers to Inspire You to See the World

I am a participant in affiliate programs, so basically I earn a small commission if you use any of the affiliate links on this post - at no extra cost to you! Dope right?

latinx travel bloggers to follow

I grew up in Los Angeles, surrounded by different cultures, languages, and people. I was in a bilingual preschool, even though I forgot everything, and there was always a cultural holiday every week of the year. So as I started my travel journey, and eventually began blogging, I noticed a STARKK piece of the puzzle missing. Where were all the Latinx travel bloggers??

Surely, I must be missing something, right? But as I frantically searched through featured blogger lists and sponsored posts from companies, it only confirmed what I had seen. Or rather, not seen. Zero Latinx travel bloggers.

Pero like…um, WHY?

But…why??? That’s the thing I didn’t understand. The Hispanic and Latinx demographic is the fastest growing demographic in the United States. In the United States alone, Hispanic and Latinx travel brings in more than $56 billion in leisure travel EVERY YEAR.

The Hispanic and Latinx community travels in larger groups, with 31% traveling in a group of four or more people – more than the average of other demographics at 25%. The Latinx community also, on average, spend more per trip than the general population AND are more likely to travel with children.

SO WHERE’S THE RELATABLE MARKETING???

Rather than speculate on an answer we can all probably guess, I’m just going to cut to the chase. Latinx travel bloggers are noticeably unrecognized in the travel community.

Every once in a while, I will spot one on the “speakers” list at a travel conference, but they are always confined to the “diversity in travel” panel and they are also almost always a white or white-passing Latinx.

No disrespect to white Latinx, but like come on y’all! THERE IS MORE THAN ONE SHAPE, SIZE, COLOR, AND CURL PATTERN IN THE LATINX COMMUNITY!!

We all deserve to see ourselves represented, especially in travel. This is not an end-all-be-all list, but it is a list of Latinx travel bloggers that I personally follow and have an actual solid connection with – they’re not just a bunch of random names I threw together. Plus, I asked them all what their favorite tv series were so you could PROPERLY connect yourself to your new travel soulmate. So I hope you enjoy everyone aannndd without further ado, here are some awesome Latinx travel bloggers to diversify your travel game!

Taima from Poor in a Private Plane

hispanic travel bloggers

Taima is my travel inspiration, tbh. She works a full time job (like me!), and even with bills to pay and errands to run, she manages to prioritize travel and weave it into her routine! In her words, she “travels luxuriously for less,” and that’s a gravy train that I want to swim in. Taima also has excellent tips for budgeting and saving money while traveling!

their favorite tv series: *doesn’t watch tv*

my favorite post by them: How to Travel the World WITHOUT Quitting Your Job

Ana from Chasing Wild Gusts

latinx travel bloggers

A lover of all things outdoors and adventure-y, Ana is a spark of inspiration for those wanting to dive headfirst into nature. While her blog posts definitely read exciting, Ana also has fabulous youtube videos of all of her adventures! What’s more, I appreciate that she is always thoughtful and considerate while traveling, and even while engaging on social media!

favorite tv series: Big Bang Theory

my favorite post by them: A Beginner’s Guide to Planning a Safari

Demi from Color Me Wanderlust

latina travel blogger

Talk about a breath of fresh air, good vibes, and colorful adventures! Demi is a fun-loving carefree kind of traveler, skipping around the world in search of the next unforgettable memory! She works hard and laughs harder. Demi travels for herself and her own fulfillment, and shares her learnings on her blog, as well as fantastic tips on how to easily make travel more routine in your life!

favorite tv series: Game of Thrones

my favorite post by them: Mini-guide to Island Hopping in Belize

Karla from Karla Tomaselli

latina travel groups

Karla was one of the first travel bloggers I followed on instagram, and I always so grateful I came across her page. One thing that I really appreciate about Karla’s blog posts is that she is so transparent in how much she budgets and the costs of her trips – she includes prices in the posts!! Although she currently lives abroad, she is not a full-time traveler, and gives great advice on how to see the most with the least amount of time off.

favorite tv series: Rubi

my favorite post by them: Beating the Crowds in Petra

Taryn from Her Travel Style

latinx travel bloggers to follow

There’s nothing stopping Taryn. From the salt plains in Bolivia to the safaris in Botswana, to the lagoons in Thailand, to climbing mountains in Canada island hopping in Greece, to temples in India, OR EVENT TO ANT-FREAKING-ARCTICA…Taryn is on the move. One of my favorite things about Taryn is that she fully immerses herself when she travels, and tries to see a place from more than one perspective. She doesn’t “check it and forget it,” and frequently revisits her favorite places because there is always something new to learn. Plus, along with her amazing travel guides, her travel stories about her wild adventures are…WILD.

favorite tv series: Fleabag

my favorite post by them: Eating Grilled Rat in Cambodia

Olivia from O.Christine

latina travel bloggers to follow

Oliviaaaa, my sweet and talented twin. Everyone – she’s a gem. Olivia is a city girl bringing us ALL back to the great outdoors, and turning up the diversity while she’s at it! Olivia is a champion for inclusion, and also knows how to turn up at a party! She’s down to earth, witty, transparent, creative, and an overall fantastic human. Life isn’t always on the up and up, but sometimes even taking a nice stroll outside can make you feel better – even just for a second. I thank Olivia for reminding me of that.

favorite tv series: Family Matters

my favorite post by them: Life Struggles that Make You a Better Traveler

Lola from Miss Filatelista

latinx travel bloggers

Accomplished travel writer and founder of LatinasLoveTravel on instagram, Lola is an inspiration. Personally, Lola has made me want to be a better traveler. No, not in the sense that I can score the best deals or see the most countries in x-amount of time. Lola makes me want to be a better global citizen. One of Lola’s main pillars on her blog is sustainable and ethical travel – and if you don’t know what that is, don’t worry, there is no judgment and she breaks it down for you step by step!

But basically travel is a luxury and a privilege, and no matter where you visit, you should try to leave a positive impact on the people, economy, and environment…or at least not make it worse! She has tons of guides and tips on how to travel more responsibly, and how to shift your thinking to be more ethically conscious, and you can spend hours reading each and every one. Once you know better, DO BETTER.

favorite tv series: Orange Is the New Black

my favorite post by them: What exactly IS Responsible Travel?

Joella from Roving Jo

rovingjo travel blogger

Jo is such an authentically refreshing person. There is no brand persona she needs to portray 24/7. There is no underlying agenda. Jo is just Jo, and Jo travels. Jo works a full-time non-remote job AND takes care of her family, so her travels are relatable and she keeps everything down to Earth. I’ve even featured her on my Traveling with a Full-Time Job post because she gives great tips on how to incorporate travel into your life when it seems like there just isn’t enough time.

favorite tv series: Outlander

my favorite post by them: How to Save for Your Dream Vacation

Olga from Dreams in Heels

latinas who travel

Founder of Latinas Who Travel, a popular travel account on Instagram, Olga is dedicated to inspiring all women, but especially the Latina community, to explore the world. Olga is also a frequent speaker at travel conventions and events, and wants to show that travel is not just for one type of person.

my favorite post by them: What to Know Before Going Solo

Diana from Diana.Janisbel

Diana has actually been featured on my blog before, on my Traveling as a Full-Time Student post, and I’ve only become more of a fan since then! Diana balances work, school, AND travel, and gives some of the best tips on the block how to do it without absolutely losing your mind! Her smile is contagious and her wanderlust even moreso!

favorite tv series: Sin Senos No Hay Paradiso and Gossip Girl

PerlaGiselle from I Am Perlita

PerlaGiselle is a master of balancing things. Even on her blog, she balances fashion, lifestyle, and travel. AND – A BABY??? Yes, she puts the madre in desmadre comadre, and her blog has transformed to reflect that! She offers tips on everything from traveling (and partying!) while pregnant to handling a baby abroad. And you are welcome to come along for the ride! Also – I JUST LOVE HER. She is a complete SWEETHEART in real life, seriously, she’s a real one. She encourages a judgment-free environment because traveling -and motherhood- are always a work in progress.

Jess has only recently started blogging, but travel has been part of her life as long as she can remember. She has also recently created group tours to Cuba to connect travelers to the country of her heritage, and show a more local perspective to the frequently misunderstood island.

favorite tv series: Rocket Power

my favorite post by them: How to Save Money When Traveling to Cuba

Jeanine from Le Wild Explorer

latinx travel bloggers on instagram

Jeanine is a GODDESS!!!! And I’m not just saying that because she’s from Los Angeles. But also, that’s how you know she’s incredible. Whether you find her in hiking boots or find her in a bikini (or both at the same time), you know she’s off on a wild outdoor adventure! Her “Get Up and Go Outside” attitude is what drew me in, but her bright and fun spirit hit me right in the feels. Her blog makes me want to push myself, it’s infectious, and I love it. OH AND ALSO SHE HAS A BOMB PODCAST THAT ALL OF YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO RIGHT NOW – OhMyTravelPodcast (they have an instagram page too!)

favorite tv series: Friends and The Walking Dead

my favorite post by them: Roadtrippin’ Through Utah’s National Parks

America from Americatru

latina travel groups

I absolutely love everything about this girl!! America is such a personality. She’s fun, hilarious, and doesn’t take herself too seriously, which is refreshing in the travel blogger community. America is a single mom who built her own dance company from the ground up, and is San Antonio’s BEST BELLY DANCER. And that’s not just me saying that, she has LITERALLY won awards. Her stories are uncensored, honest, and relatable. Plus, her Youtube Channel features all the best moments from her travels!

my favorite post by them: How to Plan a Trip Stress-Free

Stephanie from Wanderlust Beauty Dreams

latina travel groups

Stephanie is all about following her dreams. As a first-gen kid, she breaks down barriers, speaks up for inclusion, creates her own seat at the table, and also never compromises her beliefs. Stephanie has been traveling all of her life, and even for her quinceañera, she chose a vacation instead of a traditional party. A huge advocate for solo travel, Stephanie began travel blogging when she realized that Latina travelers were hardly recognized in the travel community, let alone as travel experts or speakers at conferences. She’s here to encourage women to travel, and she’s not staying silent about it. Stephanie creates vlogs in both English and Spanish and is the creator of WanderlustSuenos on Instagram!

favorite tv series: Casa de Papel (Money Heist)

my favorite post by them: Survival Tips for Long Flights

Erika from Mochila Monkeys

latina travel groups

Erika is a full-time traveler with the love of her life, Marco, but traveling has always been a passion she held dear. Erika writes in both English and Spanish, and wants to inspire other young women to see the world with their own eyes. She also strives to help bridge the language gap between Spanish speakers and the mainstream travel community.

Cata from The Walrus in the Room

latina travel groups

Always authentically true to herself, Cata is on a journey of self-love, self-appreciation, and finding balance in her life. If that’s not the most relatable sentence of the century, I don’t know what is. Cata’s blog reads like a fun diary, as she documents the different ways and tips she is reshaping her life to grow into a more well rounded and better version of herself. It’s inspiring, it’s fun, it’s VERY honest, and it’s a journey you’ll want to take yourself!

my favorite post by them: Finding Work-Life Balance

Jessica from JessikaTrips

latina travel groups

Cat lovers, WHERE YOU AT??? Jessica is currently living in South Korea, but that hasn’t stopped her from traveling the world. She is silly, down to Earth, and loves to find the quirkier side of travel, liiiike participating in a giant food fight festival, or learning how to bartend because…well, why not??

favorite tv series: The Walking Dead

my favorite post by them: How to Organize Your Travel Documents

Jenn from The Curly Jenny

afro latinx travel bloggers

Jenn is a trilingual engineer, and an unstoppable force. She reps her heritage and wants to inspire other AfroLatinas to travel, enter into STEM fields, and ultimately shine bright and live their best lives! favorite tv series: The Handmaid’s Tale

my favorite post by them: Fun Facts about London’s Phone Booths

Val from Waves of Travel

latina travel groups

Val is a slow traveler, taking her time to fully immerse herself into the culture and places she visits. AND, since she is a digital nomad, she has plenty of time to do that! Val travels out of a backpack, but that doesn’t stop her from experiencing each destination to the fullest. She showcases travel in an honest light, from the highest highs down to the lowest lows, where many bloggers dare not tread.

favorite tv series: Rebelde

my favorite post by them: The Secret to Travel

Gerry from Dominicana Abroad

latina travel groups

Gerry truly is a gift to the travel community. She is a semi-nomadic traveler, but always an amazing travel writer. Her tips, guides, and suggestions dive deeper than 99% of travel books, with an emphasis on exploring the culture and nature of each destination. Gerry also leads group travel tours and excursions in the Dominican Republic, and she works with local Dominican small business owners to pay them a fair wage to maintain ethical business practices. Gerry also does travel planning and itinerary building, along with a variety of freelance services like consultations and social media management.

my favorite post by them: Overcoming Travel Burnout

Belle and Vic from The Xpat Family

latina travel groups

SOMEBODY GIVE THIS FAMILY THEIR OWN TRAVEL SHOW!!! Belle and Vic are family travelers through and through, but before that, they were two people with a passion for travel. They are full-time digital nomads, and in between flights and trains and buses around the world, they are teaching their daughters to be open and understanding to different cultures and people, and to respect each destination as if it were their own. Their Youtube channel is absolutely adorable, and it’s so inspiring watching their journey!

favorite tv series: Lucifer

my favorite post by them: How to Spot Ethical Elephant Sanctuaries

Lindsey from Seven Day Weekender

latina travel groups

Lindsey is an absolute doll. BUT THAT SAID – SHE ALSO ABANDONED ME IN PORTLAND ALL BY MYSELF SO SHE COULD GO LIVE HER BEST LIFE IN DC. I don’t blame her, but I am still DEEPLY offended. So with that in mind, in my most unbiased opinion, Lindsey has incredibly original content that explores destinations both afar, and right in her own backyard. She has a talent of making even the most ordinary seem new and exciting!

I just want to start this off by saying JESSICA SAVED MY LIFEEE IN TEXAS. Seriously, there’s nothing I appreciate more than a travel blogger who knows their home like the back of their hand. Wynee from Wynee’s World

Last, but literally the furthest things from least, is Wynee. I love travel, I love food, and I love keeping it real – all things that Wynee does very VERY well. She’s a blast in her travels, and that same energy and enthusiasm transfers to her blog posts and videos. I appreciate that Wynee is always honest and upfront with the reality of travel, and won’t hesitate to say a restaurant or hotel is trash, because ain’t nobody got time to waste on vacation just because other travel bloggers are too “nice” to give honest feedback. Wynee has your back!! Plus, Wynee makes a trip to the grocery store look like an adventure and I. AM. HERE. FOR. IT.

20 Latina Travel Bloggers You Need to Follow

Posted on Last updated: September 4, 2023

As you know I love being a travel blogger and content creator. As a Latina, I’m always on the lookout for other amazing Latina travel bloggers that are absolutely smashing it out of the park.

Here are 20 awesome Latina travel bloggers you need to be following!

1. Carol Cain ( @girlgonetravel )

If you love the vibe of Hallmark movies juxtaposed with world-class travel content, you need to be following Carol Cain.

Her travel content spans all around the world with her husband and kids, with tons of great tips, but she’s now relocated to the Finger Lakes in New York State with so much wholesome local content, she just feels like everyone’s best friend.

2. Olga Maria ( @latinaswhotravel and @dreamsinheels )

Olga looks after not one but two amazing travel sites. Her main one, Dreams in Heels, focuses on traveling in a luxurious way on a budget, and who doesn’t want to know how to do that?! We love a champagne lifestyle on a prosecco budget!

Her other content site, Latinas Who Travel is a community site and account that brings together content from Latina travel bloggers from all corners of the world.

3. Gerry Isabelle ( @DominicanAbroad )

Gerry is a super cool Dominican New Yorker with an awesome blend of cultural tips and insights about the Dominican Republic and loads of hidden gem videos and blogs about her hometown of New York.

Now based in Philadelphia, Olivia Christine is an Afro-Latina who was born in the Bronx in New York City. In addition to being an amazing travel blogger and content creator, Olivia is also an activist, raising awareness of the autoimmune disease Lupus, which she’s been diagnosed with.

A lot of her content revolves around how to manage pain and triggers when you’re traveling and how to live life to the fullest – it’s super inspiring!

I’m here to help you get comfortable with all things travel, especially my areas of expertise: Solo Travels and Life Abroad. In Travel Tips, expect a lot of resources and tools ranging in topics: financing travel, travel inspiration, women travels, and more.

Travel Tips

Life abroad, solo travels, the americas.

This side of the world has always been home and for the longest time the only places I really knew anything about because I hadn’t been anywhere else. I spent the majority of my childhood between the United States and Peru. With family all over, my parents always wanted us to spend time with them hence our many road trips when I was younger. So far I’ve visited over 12 countries on this side of the world and 32 US States.

My first trip to Europe was at fifteen when I decided to trade in a typical Latina celebration, la Quinceñeara, for a three week trip gallivanting throughout el viejo continente (the Old World). Since then I’ve visited over 10 European countries and even made one of them my current home. It has been a journey to get to point so I hope you’ll follow along!

Cheap airlines between many European cities and Morocco led me to visit during my study abroad semester in Paris, France. I brought in the New Year that year with my cousin in the city of Dakar, Senegal. Years later I found a picture of my grandmother in front of the Pyramids of Giza and decided to go to Egypt and recreate the photo. I’ve only been fortunate enough to visit 3 countries in Africa so far, but I know I’ll be going to more soon.

“ Going into the unknown can be scary, but it’s scarier not even attempting to try. ”

I remember being nervous and thinking, “what am I doing here?” when I got off the bus in Medellin, Colombia during a 7 week solo trip through Colombia and Panama. I had just arrived feeling tired from the flight and could not figure out how to get to my hostel for the life of me. It was not the best start especially when you factor in that I used to get social anxiety and would worry too much about looking out of place or that I didn’t belong somewhere.

After a nap and shower, everything changed and I had an amazing time during the rest of my trip. But what if I really couldn’t deal and decided to leave? Thankfully, I’ll never know what path my life would have taken if I had left. After visiting more than 30 countries, all I can say is go for it. Whether that be a new career, relationship or adventure, it’s better to know the outcome, however scary, instead of forever wondering, “what if?”

Get to know me

I’m Flavia, a first-gen Peruvian American who travels as often as I can, even if that means going solo. My curiosity about other cultures, places, and food has led me to visit 30+ countries so far. It’s even taken me as far as moving to Spain, which I’m looking to have it be my home base for the unforeseeable future. I want to give women, particularly women of color, the tips and tools to travel solo in a way that is smart, safe, and secure and without breaking the bank. Since moving and studying abroad, I also share tips on what to expect and all the different things to be aware of

Meet Jen Ruiz, the woman behind Jen on a Jet Plane. “Like you, I always wanted to see the world but found excuses not to go, like, “I have no one to go with” or “travel is too expensive.”

Then one day I chucked that mentality. I realized traveling made me happy, and I wanted to prioritize it.

I set out to take 12 trips in 12 months while practicing law full-time the year before my 30th birthday. To my surprise, I ended up surpassing my goal, completing 20 trips in 12 months to destinations like Greece, Argentina, Thailand and Iceland.

I found deals like a $16 flight to Ecuador and $38 flight to New Zealand! That’s when I wrote my first book, “ The Affordable Flight Guide .” It’s a #1 Amazon Bestseller and 2018 Readers’ Favorite Award winner. Flavia Cornejo Latina Traveler

Meet Flavia , the woman behind Latina Traveler.  “I’m a First Generation Peruvian American born in the United States to two Peruvian immigrant parents. Over the years I’ve visited over 30 countries and have lived in 5.

Travel has always been a huge part of my life. I was first introduced to it when I was just a month old on a flight from New Jersey to Peru.

Growing up, I spent the majority of my summers in Peru with my younger sister. These trips along with my dad’s persistence led to my high level of fluency in both English and Spanish, something that I’ll forever be grateful for.

My family always traveled to other states and eventually other countries which only grew my curiosity of other cultures and places. That’s why when I was 15 and 16, I decided to trade in the usual Quinceañera and Sweet Sixteen parties for trips to Europe and China.

Instead of two parties that lasted a night each, I got two trips that together lasted over 5 weeks!

Solo female travel is my main focus and showing the world that Latinas travel.”

How to Travel With Friends Without Coming Home as Enemies

Portrait of Andrea González-Ramírez

The horror story goes something like this: A friend group travels to Europe together. After picking out their rooms, there’s a small disagreement over how to keep the Airbnb clean. Then two people argue over splitting the bill at dinner. When the sweaty group waits in a two-hour-long line to climb the Eiffel Tower, one friend makes a bitchy comment toward another about not reserving tickets in advance. Tempers flare, more barbs are traded, and the drama engulfs the rest of the vacation. By the time everyone boards the flight home, no one is on speaking terms. In the end, the trip made it out of the group chat, but the group chat didn’t make it out of the trip.

Maybe you’ve read stories like these online and felt pity. Or maybe you’ve been there, wanting to do nothing but enjoy some pasta and wine in peace on your Italian getaway while your friends give the Real Housewives a run for their money after having one too many Aperol Spritzes. Here are 12 suggestions from the Cut staff that will help you keep the peace and make sure your friendships survive your next group trip.

1. Be honest about your budget and priorities.

It helps to be clear about what you prioritize spending money on versus what you don’t so that there are no surprises when you’re trying to pick out an Airbnb or make dinner reservations. I usually find myself saying something like, “I’d prefer to keep accommodations between $80 and $150 per night, because then I can spend more on good meals.” Or, as much as you can help it, just go on group trips with people who have similar spending habits. — Sarah Miller, photo editor

2. Stay in separate rooms.

I know it’s not affordable for everyone, especially if the location is a particularly high-end one. But I promise having a room to decompress in away from everyone is worth the money. — Brooke Marine, deputy culture editor

3. Book special outings in advance.

I always find it helpful to have a loose itinerary shared in a collaborative Google Doc before the trip. You’re going to be so cranky if you show up to the fancy spa that has no tickets available and a monthlong waiting list. You can always revise your daily schedule or improvise off of what you have, but some structure is key, or else you’re spending half of your vacation researching. — Cat Zhang, culture writer

4. If you bail last minute, pay for your share.

Group trips are a notorious pain to put together. Don’t string your friends along with a “maybe” for more than a week or two of the planning process. If you can’t give a straight answer, allow them to move forward coordinating logistics without you. And if, for any reason, you must pull out of a trip after deposits have been paid, you are on the hook for your share (unless someone else is ready and willing to replace you). I was once on a bachelorette trip where a work conflict came up last minute for one of the invitees. Not only did she honor her commitment to the shared costs of the weekend, but she asked one of the restaurants on our itinerary to send the group a seafood tower at dinner. Classy! — Catherine Thompson, features editor

5. Get an extra rental car.

Forcing the group to do everything together is a great way to fester resentment, and you won’t always have the power to pick a locale with maximum walkability or good public transport. Plus, you never know when that added flexibility will solve a hair-rising logistical crisis. Have you ever quelled a fight with a last-minute CVS run? I have. — Danielle Cohen, writer

6. Don’t let friends arrive hours before the Airbnb is available.

At minimum, everyone should know the address of where you’re staying and check-in and checkout times before the trip starts. — Trupti Rami, assistant managing editor, digital

7. Talk through what you’re cool with and what’s out of the question.

Are people more inclined toward a structured schedule that starts at 7 a.m., or do they plan to get up at their leisure and wing the day? Are your friends down to party until dawn, or do they want to call it a night by 10 p.m.? Setting schedule expectations will help you plan the trip and avoid conflict later on. The same goes for boundaries, especially if you’re mixing friends from different parts of your life. Better to know what makes people uncomfortable ahead of time than have to mediate mid-trip, when Friend A is upset that there’s a half-naked rando walking around the Airbnb after hooking up with Friend B. — Andrea González-Ramírez, senior writer

8. No more than two people on Google Maps at once.

Any adventure only requires one guide and someone to check them in case they’re not great at directions (this is a public apology for whenever I’ve made my friends walk a block the wrong way). If more than two people are looking at the map, as a group we’ll spend too much time standing in the same place, create a conflict where everyone thinks they’re right, and look like big-time tourists. This rule is even more important in a driving scenario. Only the passenger should be allowed to give directions in that case (and control the aux), while people in the back seat relax and fully immerse themselves in the landscape. — Maridelis Morales Rosado, photo editor

9. Stay on top of shared bills.

Track expenses and who owes what on Splitwise . — Bindu Bansinath, writer

10. Block out alone time.

Some people need downtime to recharge or nap. Others may want to work out or read a book. Some may just want to go on a little solo walk. If there are couples on the trip, maybe they want to have sex, assuming the rooming situation allows! It’s everyone’s vacation, so everyone should get independent time to use as they wish. — Sasha Mutchnik, senior social editor

11. Break out a game when the going gets tough.

Stay present and enjoy where you’re at, even if things don’t go as planned — because they usually won’t. If there are any unexpected delays or long lines to wait in, I volunteer my phone for a few rounds of the game Heads Up! . It’s the best way to make the time pass, it’s fun, and it brings everyone together. — Katja Vujić, writer

12. You don’t have to get along with everyone …

… But you do have to be respectful. Disagreements will happen. When they do, remember you only have control over your own actions and reactions. Keep it light, keep it moving. —T.R.

Here are 6 beautiful piazzas to discover in italy.

The Torre dell'Orologio (Clock Tower) and the Rotonda (church) di S. Lorenzo

Italy is famous for many things—art, architecture, fashion, food and wine; even some of its empty spaces, in the form of piazzas, are known worldwide, with places like Piazza San Marco in Venice and Piazza di Spagna in Rome drawing millions of visitors each year. Having evolved from Greek-era agoras and Roman forums , piazzas, over the centuries, became integral to commerce and civic and religious life, and they continue to serve as vital gathering spots to this day. While each piazza is unique and frequently flanked by significant architectural works, they often have similar names, so it’s not unusual to find a Piazza del Duomo or Piazza della Republica from one town to the next.

Here are six piazzas to discover (listed alphabetically by city or town), renowned in their areas but not necessarily on the radar of many international travelers. Fall is a good time to check them out as cities wake from their summer slumber, tourists drift away, and residents return from vacation to take up daily routines.

Amalfi: Piazza del Duomo

Piazza del Duomo in Amalfi.

While Capri’s jet-setty Piazzetta may be the buzziest square along the Amalfi Coast, the town of Amalfi’s Piazza del Duomo , named for its proximity to the local cathedral, is another lively plaza sprinkled with restaurants and cafes, where visitors come to take in the local scene (and become part of it) while relaxing with a lemon granita or limoncello cocktail. (A popular place to stop is the Pasticceria Pansa, dating from 1830.) Next to the piazza is the ornate cathedral that dates from the Middle Ages with a sweep of architectural styles ranging from Romanesque to Baroque. To reach the Duomo entrance be prepared for a work-out: there are 62 steps to climb. After visiting the piazza, head to the Museo della Carta (open every day in season), or Paper Museum, highlighting the town’s history as a producer of exquisite hand-crafted papers. Called carta bambagina, it is still made today and is known for its fine texture and thickness.

Lecce: Piazza del Duomo

Buildings flanking the Piazza del Duomo in Lecce are noted for their Baroque style.

The Bishop's Palace in the Piazza del Duomo.

The Baroque style swept through Italy in the 17th and 18th centuries when the Catholic Church, in response to the Protestant Reformation, sought to communicate its teachings and underscore its power through great works of art and architecture. As in many parts of the country, Lecce’s major monuments were embellished with Baroque adornment during the period—some of the city’s finest examples can be found in the Piazza del Duomo, the site of the main cathedral, with two extravagantly decorated facades; a bishop’s palace, also with an elaborate exterior; the Campanile or bell tower (take the elevator to the top for sweeping city views); and the large and imposing Palazzo del Seminario, or seminary. (For a fee, you can visit the interior, which houses a museum, gallery and chapel.) The buildings were constructed from the local pietra Leccese, a bisque-colored limestone noted for its plasticity, that appears golden in the late-afternoon sun.

A short walk away from the Piazza del Duomo is the historic Caffè Alvino (in another notable square, Piazza Sant’Oronzo), where you can sample local pastries and the city’s classic drink, Caffè Leccese, made with coffee and almond milk.

After exploring Matera (a Word Heritage Site) with its maze-like network of ancient structures, stairs, ramps and tiny neighborhood courtyards, visitors often head to the city’s main square, the Piazza Vittorio Veneto, to relax. An architecturally-diverse space in this very ancient city (inhabited without interruption since the Paleolithic Age), the piazza is a good place to get a flavor of contemporary Matera, especially in the evening, when it takes on a festive air, restaurants and cafes fill quickly, and residents turn out for evening passeggiatas. Nearby cultural sites, like the Museum of Medieval and Modern Art in the Palazzo Lanfranchi and the Ridola Archaeological Museum, are open most days until early evening. Other landmarks include the 13th-century Chiesa di San Domenico, dating from 1230, and the Palombaro Lungo, housing a historic water system and cistern beneath the piazza. Visitors also head to the Belvedere Luigi Guerrichio to take in the views of the Sasso Barisano.

Padua: Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta

Piazza delle Erbe and the Palazzo della Ragione.

A food stall in the "Sotto il Salone" in the Palazzo della Ragione.

Food lovers should make sure to stop by the two squares—Piazza delle Frutta and Piazza delle Erbe—flanking the striking Palazzo della Ragione (included in the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Site citation for its 14th-century frescoes.) On most days you’ll find dozens of local food (and clothing) vendors setting up shop in the two squares (della Frutta is to the palazzo’s north; delle Erbe to the south). There are more shops and stalls lining the palace’s ground-floor arcades, called Sotto il Salone or Sottosalone. This locale, which has been a marketplace for over 800 years, serves as culinary magnet for both locals and visitors and offers a cornucopia of delectables—fresh pastas, charcuterie, cheeses, Veneto wines, and other varieties of local produce.

Among the stops to make are the Pastificio Artusi, famous for its fresh pasta with seasonal fillings, and Casa del Parmigiano, with a selection of cheeses from different parts of the country in addition to the Parmesan variety which gave the shop its name. After food shopping, stop by one of the bars in the arcade or in the squares, or visit the palazzo’s great hall, Il Salone, a former judicial center where the legendary Giotto and his studio created frescoes (destroyed by a fire in 1420, but later recreated.)

Verona: Piazza delle Erbe

Piazza delle Erbe was built on the site of a former Roman forum.

On the site of a former Roman forum, Piazza delle Erbe (“herb square”), was named for its origins as a produce market in the late Middle Ages. The square still hosts a market daily with stalls selling a variety of wares from fruits and vegetables to small leather goods and souvenirs. A genial center of Veronese life for two millennia, the piazza is great for people-watching with outdoor cafes filled from late morning to midnight, even when the weather becomes brisk. Make sure to stop by the Casa Mazzanti Caffè, located in a building with Renaissance-era frescoes. From here you can take in the centuries-spanning architecture, including the medieval Casa dei Mercanti and the Baroque Palazzo Maffei, while sipping on local wines like sparklers from nearby Franciacorta.

Trento: Piazza del Duomo

The Torre Civica and the Case Cazuffi-Rella in Trento's Piazza del Duomo.

Italy is known for the stellar fresco art that enriches the rooms and religious spaces of countless historic sites, but in Trento in the Alpine district of Trentino-Alto Adige, you’ll also find it used as exterior adornment.

A wider view of the frescoed facade of Case Cazuffi-Rella.

In Trento’s main square, the Piazza del Duomo , don’t miss the beautiful Renaissance-era houses, the Case Cazuffi-Rella, covered in frescoes portraying mythological figures. In addition, there are frescoes inside the Duomo (and, famously, at the Castello del Buonconsiglio, about a 15-minute walk away).

As in many other cities, the structures surrounding the main piazza date from the Middle Ages. The former bishop’s palace, Palazzo Pretorio, is home to the Tridentine Diocesan Museum, a repository of fine art and decorative objects from the 11th century to the 1800s. Adjacent to the palace is Torre Civica, or bell tower, which can be visited.

In winter, the piazza appears especially magical when covered in snow. There are festive Christmas markets from mid-November until the first week in January in the nearby Piazza Fiera and Piazza Cesare Battisti.
