Dress Regulations

There is no dress code at Lord’s within our general public stands, however we do not allow fancy dress.

Please note the Dress Regulations for the North and South Wheelchair Areas in the Warner Stand can be found in the Members’ Friends’ Enclosure section.

If where you are sitting does permit a smart dress code, take some inspiration from Hawes & Curtis' Lord's style guide available here .

The dress code for hospitality venues is smart casual. Casual trousers, smart jeans and tailored shorts are acceptable. Sports trainers and flip flops are not permitted.

The minimum standard of dress required to enter the Upper Mound Stand, and the Debenture areas of both the Compton Stand Balcony and Edrich Stand Balcony is smart casual. 

Jackets are not required, but gentlemen must wear collared shirts (even when a collared sweater or jacket is worn on top) at all times in the stand. Trousers and shorts must be tailored, although denim is acceptable.

Please note, flip-flops and torn, ripped or unclean clothing are not permitted.

A formal standard of dress applies in the Pavilion on all match days. 

A tailored jacket or blazer with a collared shirt;

Tie or cravat;

Tailored trousers (chinos, corduroys or other formal trousers); and

Footwear appropriate to a formal setting with socks which cover the ankle.

Skirt; 

Tailored trousers with a top or blouse; or

Other clothing that is appropriately formal, including jumpsuits; and

Footwear appropriate to a formal setting

We will not accept admittance in denim, or dilapidated or offensive garments of any kind.

For the avoidance of doubt, footwear not appropriate to a formal setting includes flip flops, strapless sandals, branded/leisure trainers, canvas shoes, walking shoes/boots and running shoes. Please note that this list is not exhaustive.

International Matches

A smart casual standard of dress applies to all Members and their guests in Members' Friends' Enclosures for all international matches, including a collared shirt or an appropriate alternative , even if you are wearing a collared sweater or jacket.

All other match days

In all other match days, we recommend spectators to adhere to a smart casual standard of dress.

Here are some answers to a number of questions that we get asked on a regular basis.

Some games are more expensive than others. Why?

Put simply, its supply and demand. MCG Corporate Boxes come with the same inclusions for each game, irrespective of the price. For example the match between Collingwood and Hawthorn is going to be more popular than a less popular Melbourne team playing an interstate team who may not be performing well. Generally speaking, most Friday night games will be more expensive than weekend games. You can read more about pricing here

I want to book a box. What’s the process?

Once you’ve decided on a box, you need to complete a booking form. The booking form is a binding agreement and no bookings are final until a booking form is received. We will then issue an invoice which is a 7 day account. Payment terms can be negotiated. We accept Visa, Mastercard and American Express (secure online payment via Stripe, 1.9 % admin fees apply), Cheque and EFT. No tickets will be issued until full payment has been received.

I have less than 12 people who want to attend a game. Can we have a box?

The smallest box size is 12. You must pay for all 12 guests. If you have less than 12 guests, we recommend The Nissan Lounge or a dining package instead.

What is the dress code for MCG Corporate Boxes?

MCG Corporate Box dress code is at your hosts discretion. You should check with them before attending. Please note, a minimum dress code of smart casual applies. This means:

Not Acceptable: Men

• Thongs, scuffs, dilapidated footwear, gumboots, moccasins, slippers and ugg boots.
• T-shirts, singlets, torn or ripped clothes, even if “designer” tears.
• Shirts not supported by a collar including crew neck shirts (skivvies are acceptable).
• Football, running, athletic, bike, tennis and board shorts.
• Tracksuit pants.
• Any clothing displaying racist or similarly offensive messages.

Not Acceptable: Women

• Torn or ripped garments, even if “designer” tears.
• Running, athletic or bike shorts, or sportswear such as tennis skirts.
• Bikini tops and tops showing bare midriff.

Where are the MCG Corporate Boxes located? Can I request a location?

The Corporate Boxes are located around the MCG. We will accommodate location requests as best we can.

We have a guest who is Coeliac/Vegetarian/other special dietary requirement. Can you organise this?

Yes, we can arrange for guests with dietary requirements. This must be disclosed at least 10 days prior to the event to ensure the caterers can accommodate the request.

I want to bring my kids. Are they allowed in the boxes? Do they need a ticket?

Yes, children of all ages are permitted into the boxes and must be supervised at all times. The decision to allow children into a MCG Corporate Box is at the host’s discretion. Under no circumstances are they to consume alcohol. Children under the age of 3 do not require a ticket.

Can I book a box and bring my own drinks in?

No, any boxes purchased must be accompanied with a menu and beverage package. Guests are not permitted to bring their own food and beverages, either from home or from the outlets on the concourse.

What impact will a COVID-19 type event have on my booking?

Your booking will be subject to terms and conditions outlined in a booking form.

The smallest MCG Corporate Box size is for 12 guests. If you have less guests than this, please consider a dining package where numbers are flexible or a syndicated facility such as the Nissan Lounge for groups of 8.

The Proper Attire For Visiting The Melbourne Cricket Club

The Melbourne Cricket Club isn’t a place that you can enter without putting some thought into your clothing. If you want to get inside the premises, a minimum of “neat casual” is the least that you can wear, but to fully explore the premises (like entering the MCC Dining Room), you’ll need to dress a little fancier.

The MCC Dress Code: A Tradition

Don’t expect to get into the MCC at all without conforming to their dress code. It’s been enforced ever since the Club opened 230 years ago, and isn’t waived for ANYONE, even to MCC members. Dress code is regularly checked upon entrance and inside the premises, and anyone who isn’t compliant is immediately evicted.

There are even some areas of the MCC that have a dress code of its own. The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the Long Room, the Frank Grey Smith Bar, and the Jim Stynes Grill only allow certain kinds of clothing, which can be further divided between men and women’s attire. The dress code is a strict policy of both decorum and tradition that all members and guests need to follow (though it gets relaxed somewhat under specific circumstances, as you’ll see below.)

Defining ‘neat casual’.

If there’s a blanket rule that you can follow when it comes to the MCC dress code, it’s that it has to be “neat casual”. It’s reserved clothing that falls slightly below corporate dress code and above your usual casual clothing in terms of dress. If it’s something that can be worn to a golf course, it’s a safe bet that it’ll be allowed inside the MCC, or at least the Members Reserve.

The MCC website has a complete list of clothing items that it doesn’t allow in the premises, but for brevity’s sake we’ve compiled the quickest (and easiest) way for you to put together an acceptable outfit below:

Dress Codes For Men

Footwear : Any form of sports shoes, sandals, and open shoes are not allowed. Socks must be worn at all times.

Tops : Men above 15 need to be wearing collared shirts. Skivvies are allowed, but crew neck t-shirts are not. Overalls are also forbidden.

Bottoms : Sports shorts, tracksuit pants, and beachwear are not allowed.

Designs : Clothing that displays racist, provocative, or similarly offensive messages are not allowed.

Ideal outfit: A collared shirt with long sleeves, slacks, oxford shoes or leather loafers. No dilapidated or torn clothing, even if it’s a designer label.

Footwear : Any form of sports shoes, sandals, and open-toe shoes are not allowed. Gumshoes, ugg boots, and similar footwear is forbidden.

Tops : Tops showing bare midriff are not allowed. 

Bottoms : Sportswear, sports shorts, tracksuit pants, and beachwear are not allowed.

Ideal outfit: A dress with a cardigan or blazer, heel or comfortable flats. No dilapidated or torn clothing, even if it’s a designer label.

Dress Codes By Room, Weather, And Event

We’ve covered what guests and visitors can wear inside the MCC premises: but what if you get invited into one of their rooms? The dress codes are a little more stringent.

• The Long Room and Members Dining Room requires all male guests to wear a lounge suit or tailored jacket. A collared shirt with tie, slacks, and dress shoes are suitable for inner wear, while females are expected to dress in a similarly appropriate standard of clothing.
• Special function rooms like the Frank Grey Smith Bar and Jim Stynes Grill do not allow caps, hats, beanies and football jumpers.
• Jackets can be removed in the summer months.
• During T20 Big Bash League matches, the above restrictions for the Long Room and Members Dining Room are lifted, and only the Members Reserve dress code applies.

When in doubt, you can either check the MCC website for the rules and regulations on how to dress, or ask an MCC member.

Dress For The Occasion

The MCC dress code is a long-cherished tradition of decorum and dignity in one of the oldest sporting clubs in the world. Fortunately, neat casual clothing isn’t that hard to come by, and you may already have the pieces that you need in your wardrobe!

The MCC Dress Code has been in place since its opening almost 230 years ago. Particularly stringent is the attire required to enter the Long Room, which is often cited as the heart and soul of the Melbourne Cricket Club.

Many exclusive clubs in Melbourne and Australia have maintained dress codes throughout their history despite some protest from outsiders. These clubs have experienced criticism from non-members who believe that dress codes and the firm upholding of a club’s traditional values are outdated and archaic.

Racing Clubs, members clubs and even Spring Racing events have always maintained the standard of dress expected of their members and guests.

“Traditionally, Derby Day has been a strict black and white policy. The editor of Fashion and Flemington, Emily Power told the Sydney Morning Herald that the code could have been inspired by a 1960s Australian Women’s Weekly advertisement. The best black and white outfit on the day would be awarded a $200 wardrobe, sponsored by whiskey maker James Buchanan and Co, for its Black and White label.”

No matter the origins or the opinions on the dress codes upheld by both the MCC and other private clubs, the club maintains that the responsibility of appropriate dress falls on the individual, and if staff feel that the dress codes have not been met, entry to the MCC club will be denied.

In 2012, Image Group wrote an article regarding MCCs policy on skirt and dress length for women. While the club opted against a specific policy to regulate hem length, it relied on and continues to rely on existing dress codes and their right to refuse entry based on attire.

The MCC code currently stipulates that maintaining dress standards at all events are of paramount concern for the club, after all the MCC is upholding it’s standards. Failure to uphold these expectations can result in denied entry. Here’s what the MCC suggests:

The dress code differs slightly between Members Reserve and the Long Room and Members Dining Room. The Long Room requires all males wear a lounge suit or tailored jacket, shirt, tie, slacks and dress shoes. And all females are expected to uphold a similarly appropriate dress standard.

Big cheese and crab hats: The most ridiculous outfits spotted at the DNC

People adorned in glittering cowboy hats, flecks of neon green, cheeseheads and flannel shirts broke up the sea of blue signs and lighting that the Democratic National Committee set up to serve as the backdrop at the quadrennial convention as notable speakers and performers took to the stage.

An array of colors, patterns, sparkles and hats of varying heights bobbed and weaved through the massive crowd at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois this week, at times looking more like the crowd for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

Delegates , party leaders, candidates and supporters chose to wear their most patriotic outfits and accessories — plus a lot of state pride — in celebration of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz being the party’s official presidential ticket.

And celebrate, they did.

Monday evening, members of the Democratic Party wore what seemed to be watered-down versions of outfits in an ode to their country.

The theme, “For the People” inspired various accessories and outfits with the American flag, or at the very least the colors of the flag.

One memorable moment came when Shawn Fain, the president of the United Auto Workers union unveiled a “Trump is a scab” t-shirt underneath his blazer when he took the stage.

The moment, while far less dramatic, was reminiscent of Hulk Hogan ripping his shirt during the Republican National Convention .

Tuesday evening’s roll call – the ceremonial moment when delegates from each state official cast their vote for a nominee – had all the markings of a nightclub that Saturday Night Live’s “Stefon” would suggest: snippets of 57 songs, a man wearing a realistic corn hat, Lil Jon singing Turn Down For What.

This year, each U.S. state and territory chose a song to represent their states – and some chose a unifying fashion element in addition.

Wisconsin delegates wore cheeseheads. Kansas delegates seemingly came straight from a Chiefs game. Maryland delegates waved mini versions of their state flag.

Even if an entire state delegation didn’t get behind a themed outfit, that didn’t stop individual attendees from showing their state pride.

The electrifying energy of roll call night was palpable, even through the TV as DJ Cassidy led the room through the playlist of songs. Each time state delegates announced who they would cast their votes to, the entire crowd erupted into cheers and applause.

Outrageous outfits seemed to thin out over the next few days. On day three, the colorful garbs adorned with variations of Harris were traded for more demure options like buttons, hats and shoes.

By the end of the DNC, the sparkles had faded, the cheeseheads were smelly and many of the red, white and blue hats were traded for the Harris-Walz campaign signature camo hats. A signal that Democratic supporters are ready to rally behind Harris in the hopes of a November victory
