Snorkel in the Waters of the MOST Spectacular Coral Reefs - Entry to Which is Forbidden to Most Travelers …

Helen seeing the fish inside the shallow waters.

  • Unlike the other snorkeling tours operating in Playa del Carmen, we hold one of the very limited licenses to snorkel the breathtaking coral reefs in the Cozumel Marine Park with its abundance of sea life.
  • So we don’t have to offer you a second class experience snorkeling in cenotes. Cenotes are a type of sinkhole – and cannot be compared with the beautiful colorful reefs in the Cozumel Marine Park.

Which means you will enjoy an exceptional PREMIUM snorkeling experience with us that is second to none.

You'll experience a Cozumel Snorkeling Adventure - virtually no one else can match in the whole Mayan Riviera …

One turtle camly ate his breakfast while I watched less than ten feet away!"

My family and I love to snorkel and when we book an excursion, I do my homework, checking out all the companies, reading reviews, and looking for the best fit for my family.

If you want a trip that spends most of the time in the water, with a friendly crew and clean boat, this is the trip for you!

We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Alberto, our guide. When we booked, we knew that we would be in a small group of eight or less passengers, what we didn't know was that we were the only passengers with a guide, and captain--yes, a private tour!

Alberto set us up with equipment and helped us practice before we set off on our adventure. He knew just where to find the most colorful fish and my favorite, turtles!

We saw five turtles (up close!). One turtle, calmly ate his breakfast while I watched, less than ten feet away.

Alberto found us towels when he realized we had forgotten them and offered us prescription snorkeling masks when he noticed we both wore glasses.

He couldn't be any more welcoming! He did not hurry us but offered to let us stay out longer than expected.

I have already recommended his outfit to several guests. Their prices are also considerably less than what the hotels offered. Check them out--you will be glad you did!

What sets us apart from the other Snorkeling Tours available at Playa del Carmen & Mayan Riviera?

  • Nor do these cenotes enjoy the sheer abundance of fish and other marine life that the Cozumel Reefs attract.

Gary taking a picture to the exotic marine species he saw with his friends.

And the even worse news is that the nearest cenote is in Tulum, a Town south from Playa del Carmen, needed a 1 hour 30 minutes drive before you reach it.

Dixie having a good time snorkeling in the island.

  • Contrast that with the ease of visiting the far superior Cozumel Marine Park with us, where you simply hop on the Cozumel Ferry, which takes about 20-25 minutes to arrive at Cozumel. Once there, a three minute taxi ride brings you right to our boat.
  • So, in about 30 minutes from leaving Playa del Carmen you can be at the beautiful Cozumel Marine Park getting ready to take your first snorkel trip.
  • Whereas, if you’d settled for one of the other Playa del Carmen snorkeling tours, you’d only be HALFWAY to a far inferior snorkeling trip in cenotes with virtually no fish or other marine life :(

And these are some of the reasons why – everyday – we have so many Playa del Carmen & Riviera Maya visitors coming to Snorkel in Cozumel with us …

Introducing… the 3 reefs cozumel snorkeling excursion.

You'll be amazed at the absolute volume and variety of colorful fish swimming among the majestic Cozumel reefs —  we actually feed the fish to encourage them to stay in the Coral Barriers.

If you're fortunate enough, you might spot a clawless lobster, turtles, or a graceful ray with its dazzling wave-like motion.

The most spectacular reefs in the Caribbean lie within the protected Cozumel Marine Park area, just 20 minutes off Playa del Carmen .

And, because we are one of the very few businesses who have invested in superior quality glass-bottomed boats, with the latest eco-friendly engines, to meet the stringent requirements needed to preserve this marine wonderland, you will enjoy a magnificent trip of a lifetime with us.

YOU'll visit a total of 3 Shallow Snorkeling Reefs. . Which – needless to say – are 3 of the most extraordinary among a whole area of spectacular reefs in this Caribbean island .

The first Reef you’ll visit is named 'Paradise Reef' …

Ronna and her boyfriend very stunned about the Cozumel corals.

The Reef boasts a collection of sea fans, brain corals, star corals, gorgonians, and sponges. If you are thinking on using your GoPro while you are on this snorkeling excursion, you can be certain that you will take fantastic photos and videos that will make your pals back home “Green with Envy”.

And, this is the Reef area where you will have a great view of the rare and endemic Cozumel Splendid toadfish.

This shallow reef is perfect for beginners and first time snorkelers. Both because of its shallow waters, as for its beautiful marine life.

Then, you'll stopover at the gorgeous 'Villablanca Gardens Reef' …

A beautiful shallow reef of its own. Just like Paradise Reef, the Villablanca gardens reefs are a mix of hard and soft coral, each type of coral having its own innate marine plant life and fish swimming among them.

Villablanca Gardens Reef is a perfect place for snorkeling, diving, and swimming in beautiful Cozumel Island. This reef has everything that every snorkeler, no matter his or her experience, wants to live at least once.

There is abundant marine life here. The place is not very deep; there are organized excursions, and there are attractions around you can enjoy too; this is the reason why so many snorkelers highly recommend Villa Blanca Reef.

Chrystal and her husband very happy to start a snorkeling tour with her son.

Finally, you'll discover the most magnificent of the three reefs - the 'Dzul-Ha Reef' …

Matthew very excited to see closer the marine life during a snorkeling excursion.

That means ‘Royal Water’ in the ancient Mayan language.

There are beautiful corals, sponges, and unique colorful fish in abundance. It is common for first time snorkelers to be amazed at the sheer beauty of this Reef, and as a result they want to stay here for hours.

Even if you are a beginner snorkeler, you can rest assured that you will see some of the most amazing living marine beings found here at Dzul-Ha Reef. Like serpent stars, anemones, sea fans, and other tropical fish and corals.

Although, it’s not guarantee most of the times you can see turtles here too.

And, if you are really lucky, you’ll enjoy the heart-stopping sight of a turtle swimming close by – just like Tammy Williams …

We saw everything they advertised - Tons of tropical fish, starfish, stingrays, sea turtles, and coral reefs"

Everything we expected from start to finish -- wonderful experience and great for kids too...

Booking the trip was easy, we were met on time at the Marina in Cozumel. We were briefed and shown how to properly use the snorkel equipment which by the way is in great condition -- there is shade cover on the boat and the ride from each location was very short.

They take great care to make sure your masks and flippers fit well and then have you test them out right by the dock to ensure everything works.

Nice small trip with great staff. Our two boys - 9 and 11 were well taken care of and Alberto, our guide never left their side and ensured all of our safety and enjoyment.

The day was amazing from start to finish -- the trip to each location was only about 10 minutes and the water was warm and clear.

We saw everything they advertised from tons of tropical fish, starfish, barracuda, sea turtles and the whole Coral Reefs environment was amazing.

Our boys felt comfortable since the water was only about 15 feet deep at the most and the length of the three trips with all the sea life kept them so excited.

Alberto, our guide and Santiago the boat captain, were knowledgeable and pleasant. I would go back again and highly recommend this snorkel trip for a perfect half-day excursion. We totally enjoyed ourselves!

At ‘Playa Snorkeling Tours’ we're a family-owned business …

Hola … my name is Alberto Novelo and I and my family have been providing snorkeling tours in Cozumel for Riviera Maya & Playa del Carmen visitors for over 20 years.

Over those two decades we have amazed and delighted many thousands of snorkelers, many of whom return to Cozumel time and time again.

That’s because we have the great good fortune to live near the second largest coral reef barrier on the planet, only beaten by the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia.

Because this is a family business – not staffed by disinterested employees – every single member of my family is dedicated to making this day a golden one.

You'll be guided by fully Licensed & English Speaking Staff …

Every boat captain and snorkeling guide (mostly my uncles and cousins) are certified snorkeling guides. And we all Speak English.

Snorkeling or Not - You'll enjoy the ride on our Glass-Bottomed Boats with plenty of Shade, Seating & Drinks …

As part of our premium service, our boats are all glass-bottomed with ample shade and plenty of comfortable seating .

So, if you don’t want to snorkel or are simply coming along for the ride , you will still derive great enjoyment watching the awesome sights in the crystal clear water below the boat while sipping a cool drink from the comfort of your seat, amply shaded from the sun.

And if you are planning on snorkeling, then, during the short trip to the reefs, our guide will demonstrate exactly how to use the snorkeling equipment and how to snorkel for maximum comfort and safety.

You'll experience a Snorkeling Tour full of Adventure, like David Hall, who was lucky enough to see a Spotted Manta Ray …

Within 5 minutes of being in the water, we saw a spotted manta ray..."

The booking process was easy and painless and we were met up on time the next day for our excursion. Our guide was Alberto who was a mild mannered and friendly guy. We arrived at Cozumel Marine Park for snorkelling - 3 sessions of 45 minutes each - and we were joined by three additional customers from Canada.

And to my surprise, within 5 minutes of being in the water, we saw a spotted manta ray. It was amazing. The area boasted many varieties of fish and very interesting coral. Some fish looked like they were out of Nemo and there was even a trumpet fish too.

All in all, it was a great trip, Alberto made a great guide and we had tons of fun and never felt rushed. I would definitely recommend Playa Snorkeling Tours for anyone looking for a snorkelling tour.

No overcrowding on our boats!

Joie and her boyfriend amazed by the colorful and vast fish they saw in the waters of Cozumel.

Although our boats are designed to safely transport 22 people, we set a limit of 12 passengers per boat , so we can give every one of our VIP guests a five star service, with ample room to relax on our comfortable seating, which is carefully shaded for your maximum comfort.

Because we are determined you will enjoy the best possible experience with us, despite them being able to carry 22 people in perfect comfort.

So, sit back and relax and enjoy the personal attention you will get as our valued guest.

Jason and his family very excited seeing a group of fish during their snorkeling tour.

First time snorkeling? No problem, because during the short trip to the reefs, our guide will demonstrate exactly how to use the snorkeling equipment and how to snorkel for maximum comfort and safety.

And, if this is your first time here, the sheer volume and variety of the dazzling tropical fish coupled with the truly impressive reefs of both hard and soft coral will astonish you.

We encourage the fish by feeding them!

And that's Because we specialize in Families with Children - and First Time Snorkelers …

First Time Snorkeling, so we were a bit nervous - but from the moment we stepped on Alberto's Boat all apprehensions vanished!"

As it was the first time we’d snorkeled, we were a bit nervous. But from the moment we stepped on his boat, all apprehensions subsided.

Such a caring, fun and upbeat crew to be with on his boat. Laughter was constant and drinks were plentiful! Alberto and his crew consistently ensured that we were comfortable, laughing and well taken care of.

Another crew member was constantly taking pictures so that we could solely enjoy the snorkeling experience.

The tour was great in every way. Their website, their responsiveness, and especially the owner/guide Alberto, who was just outstanding.

As a Familiy Friendly Snorkeling Excursion, we go the extra mile to cater the needs of the little ones …

Needless to say, we provide only the very best snorkeling equipment, including high quality, comfortable life vests in all sizes.

Children of 3 years or older, can also enjoy the experience of a lifetime by snorkeling alongside you, provided you closely supervise them at all time.

And infants aged one and upwards are also welcome, provided you can care from them while the rest of your party are away snorkeling.

They must all be supervised by one of your party at all time. What’s more, a member of our crew will also be close at hand when under the water for extra safety.

Villablanca Reef

Then we’ll visit the ‘Villablanca Gardens Reef’, which is no less beautiful. Both reefs are a mix of hard and soft coral, each type of coral having its own indigenous marine plant life.

The CLOCK IS TICKING

As I’ve already mentioned, access to the fragile ecosystems that make up the protected Cozumel Marine Park is severely limited.

Peter and his girlfriend over the surface admiring the marine life of Cozumel.

Despite this, the eco-friendly nature of our high end glass-bottomed boats, fully equipped with shading and comfortable seating for 22 qualify us to operate 3 boats.

However, despite being licensed to take 22 passengers, we restrict most parties to 12 so you enjoy maximum comfort and close personal attention at all times, particularly when snorkeling. It’s almost like a private charter.

So, between our 3 boats, we can take a total of 36 passengers.

That sounds a lot – until you consider most of our clients come from the cruise ships, with about 20,000 cruise visitors daily.

So, because we are one of the few snorkeling tours able to enter the closely guarded Cozumel Marine Park, we tend to get booked up very quickly for all five tours and for every day of the week.

So if you snooze you might very well lose

As the most sought after snorkeling tour company, thanks to our stellar service, the superb value we offer and – unique among all the Playa del Carmen snorkeling tours – the ability to take you right into the forbidden heart of the Cozumel Marine Park with its spectacular coral reefs and even more spectacular marine life we get booked up very quickly, despite running 15 boats daily.

So, if you know what day you want, I urge you to make your booking right away, before you are disappointed...

I and all my family are eagerly looking forward to welcoming you to Cozumel and sharing our stunning coral reefs with you!

Alberto Novelo

Playa del carmen snorkeling tours, the excursion summary.

Mitzi seeing the colorful fish closely she found in the coral reef.

Why should the best be reserved for others & not you?

Haven’t you worked hard to afford this trip to Cozumel and so don’t you deserve the best that is on offer?

Because of our small fleet of just 3 boats and our strict limit on passenger numbers, designed to give you the best possible personal experience, we often have difficulty coping with all the bookings coming from the 20,000 cruise passengers that arrive in Cozumel daily.

So, now you know what a wonderland the Cozumel’s Fishing grounds are, I’d hate it if your hesitation in booking your fishing charters with us condemned you to having to settle for a second best charter that does not take good care of you and your fishing party, or worst, puts you in the hands of inexperienced Staff that speak Spanish only and you can’t understand a word they say.

So I strongly suggest you check the availability on your chosen day - right now – and then go ahead and book your fishing trip.

I’ll leave the last word to Linda Davis from North Carolina …

This was by far the Best Snorkeling - Book Playa Snorkeling. You wil be not disappointed!"

This was by far the best snorkeling we did! The water was more shallow so you got a better view of the reef. I felt like I was snorkeling in a saltwater fish tank, it was that amazing!

This is one experience I will always look back on.

Alberto was our guide for the day and I'm glad he was our guy. He had a wealth of knowledge and very passionate about the conservation and use of his country. I found that very refreshing and appreciated his love and concern for the reef and mangroves that surround the beach.

We did four 45 minute snorkel trips to different locations. My favorite sighting was the "refrigerator" where there were a bunch of large spiny lobsters holed up. Super cool!

My husband found this company online and we did all the booking and payment online while still in the States.I was a little concerned doing it this way, but they were nothing but professional.

If you have the chance, book the Playa Snorkeling Tours for your snorkeling excursion! You will not be disappointed!

But, to guarantee your comfort and give you our personal attention, we rarely exceed 12 passengers in each boat.

That means you enjoy a wide choice seating and receive personal attention at all times.

But limiting each to tour to just 36 passengers means those limited seats get take very quickly.

So booking your seats without delay is the best way to be certain of securing your trip of a lifetime.

You can check our website at any time, night or day, and get a constantly updated completely accurate picture of our availability.

But please note, that can change in a heartbeat.

So – if you see a slot you want – book it right away. Because, with 80% of our bookings coming from the 20,000 daily cruise visitors, available slots tend to disappear lightening fast.

So – even though our meeting point is only 50 yards from the Cruise Pier - pick a departure time at least 30 MINUTES AFTER you are scheduled to dock to allow for the inevitable delays in embarkation.

You will need to catch a ferry at least ONE HOUR BEFORE our scheduled departure time. Bear in mind our meeting point is about a mile from the Ferry Pier, which is where you will arrive on Cozumel.

You will receive full directions with your emailed booking confirmation.

More About Snorkeling in Playa del Carmen

Mexico’s Caribbean coast is home to the second largest coral reef system in the world known as the Mesoamerican Reef.

Only second to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the reef system starts north of Cancun near a remote island called Isla Contoy and spans for over 600 miles south all the way to Honduras.

If you’re not scuba certified, then snorkeling is a great option to get an up close view of the underwater marine life.

Here’s the basics on snorkeling in Playa del Carmen:

What is the snorkeling like in Playa del Carmen?

To be honest, the snorkeling in downtown Playa del Carmen is not really the best and you need to venture a little further away to visit some of the best snorkeling spots.

The best snorkeling spots can be found around the nearby islands (like Cozumel and Isla Mujeres) and coral reefs, a short distance away from the shoreline.

Can you snorkel off the beach in Playa del Carmen?

Yes, Playa del Carmen snorkeling off the beach is possible but you probably won’t see much.

While the region is known for its incredible beaches, most of the beaches in Playa del Carmen are not really suitable for snorkeling.

This is especially true of the beaches in downtown Playa del Carmen, which are often very crowded and congested.

You may see a few tiny fish but Playa del Carmen snorkeling from shore is not really worth it, unless you are near a coral reef.

However, if you’re staying at a resort in the Riviera Maya that’s not located in downtown Playa del Carmen, it’s possible it might be located on or near a coral reef.

Check with the resort as they might offer complimentary snorkel gear that can be used during your stay.

But when snorkeling near Playa del Carmen, you can typically expect to see colorful coral reefs, tons of different fish species of all shapes and sizes, sea turtles, stingrays, starfish, barracudas, and much more.

What to Bring on a Playa del Carmen Snorkeling Tour

Here are a few items I would recommend bringing on Playa del Carmen snorkel tours:

These are the must-have items you won’t want to go without:

  • Biodegradable sunscreen : The number one thing to bring on a snorkeling tour is biodegradable sunscreen. It’s so so important to use biodegradable sunscreen in order to protect and preserve the coral reefs. Most tour operators actually prohibit the use of regular sunscreen so if you need sun protection then it is a must have. You can pickup some on Amazon here .
  • Beach towel: Don’t forget to bring a beach towel to dry off after you get out of the water. It actually can get a little cold when you’re wet and cruising on the boat. These microfiber beach towels are great options because they are super light weight and dry quickly.

Nice to Have

These items are nice-to-have and will make your life easier but are not absolutely necessary:

  • Go Pro or waterproof camera : I would highly recommend bringing a GoPro (or the less expensive Akaso Brave ) to capture your underwater experience. I always bring my GoPro and am constantly amazed by the picture quality.
  • Snorkel Set : If you’re concerned about cleanliness, you can always bring your own snorkel set instead of using the one provided on the tour. Sometimes the snorkel equipment is not the best quality and may not fit well so having your own will ensure the best comfort and a good fit.
  • Rash guard : I would also recommend bringing a rash guard , which is like a swim shirt to stay warm and also protect you from the sun without the need for sunscreen. Some snorkeling spots actually don’t allow the use of any type of sunscreen so a rash guard is a Mexico travel essential if you need sun protection.

What to Wear on a Playa del Carmen Snorkeling Tour

Here is what I would recommend wearing on a Playa del Carmen snorkeling tour:

  • Swimsuit: Whenever I go on a snorkeling excursions in Playa del Carmen, I always wear a one-piece swimsuit . It’s just so much more comfortable and provides much more coverage when you’re dealing with your lifejackets, putting on your snorkel gear, and getting in and out of the boat.
  • Swimsuit coverup : You’ll also want to wear a lightweight swimsuit coverup or shorts that can be easily removed when you’re ready to get in the water.
  • Flip flops : You’ll want to wear flip flops or sandals that can be removed easily as the tour guides will usually require you to take off your shoes as soon as you get on the boat.
  • Sun hat : I would also recommend wearing a hat but makes sure you have one with a wind lanyard or that fits very securely on your head as the wind will be strong on the boat.
  • Change of clothes : You’ll also want to bring a change of clothes so you can change out of your wet swimsuit before the ride back to your hotel or resort.

Playa del Carmen Snorkeling Tour Tips

Follow these tips to make the most of your snorkeling experience:

  • Book in advance : I would definitely recommend booking your Playa del Carmen snorkeling excursion in advance. Tours can fill up quickly and most tour companies like Viator offer flexible booking options so you can cancel up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund.
  • Book a private or small group tour : If you can, I would recommend booking a private or small group tour. It can be a little more expensive, but I’ve always had a better experience with smaller tours where you really get to bond with the guides and other tour goers. Plus, there’s nothing worse than being in a huge mob of snorkelers bumping into you, scaring off the fish, and ruining your perfect underwater photo!
  • Bring biodegradable sunscreen : As I mentioned, don’t forget to bring biodegradable sunscreen . It’s absolutely essential if you need sun protection.
  • Bring cash for tips : This is something I often forget then feel terrible when I don’t any cash on hand to tip the tour guides. Make sure to bring some extra cash (dollars or pesos) to give the tour guides a little something extra. They work hard to deliver great experiences.

Girl with a snorkel mask swimming in blue waters

We’d like to highlight that here at Every Steph we don’t support snorkeling with turtles in Akumal anymore . This decision was made due to concerns about the sustainability of the experience and the animals’ welfare. Thus, you won’t find any tours that include this activity in our list. Our goal is to promote responsible and sustainable tourism practices that focus on the preservation of the natural environment and the welfare of the animals that inhabit it.

Best Snorkeling in Playa del Carmen (+ Cancun, Tulum & the Riviera Maya) 🤿 The 7 Spots

The best snorkeling in playa del carmen isn't necessarily where you might think, but this guide will help you find where to go.

The Riviera Maya in Mexico — including notable hotspots like Playa del Carmen, Cancun and Tulum — has everything a weather-weary traveler could ask for: dewy-sweet warmth, sapphire-blue water, and verdant waving palms. Plus, plentiful tacos.

And, since the the coastline of the Riviera Maya is largely protected by the Mesoamerican Reef system, waves are typically on the chill side, making for a snorkel paradise through and through. Right?

Well, yes and no.

There is fantastic snorkeling here. But, if we’re talking about the best snorkeling in Play del Carmen (or Cancun, or Tulum) or the greater Riviera Maya, the best snorkeling isn’t actually directly in Playa del Carmen (or Cancun, or Tulum). It’s typically just outside.

That’s often because of what makes those hotspot destinations a favorite of many: that powdery-white sand, which often extends well into the water at these locales and makes for a relatively plain underwater landscape. Snorkeling here will have you finding a handful of curious shore fish, but nothing necessarily life-changing.

Instead, we need to find spots that are more reef-y or rocky — places where fish (and lots of other marine life) like to live. And those best snorkel spots, while not directly in somewhere like downtown Playa del Carmen, are typically just an easy drive, cab, shuttle, or colectivo (shared transport) away.

So, let’s look at the best snorkeling in Playa del Carmen’s general area, which also includes Cancun, Tulum and most of the Riviera Maya.

The Best Snorkeling in Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya

As we established, the best snorkeling in Play del Carmen isn’t directly in Playa del Carmen or any of the other major tourist towns in the area, but you can get to the best spots easily from Playa, Cancun, Tulum or most anywhere in the Riviera Maya. Let’s run through each of my top 7 favorite spots to snorkel in this paradise, where they actually are, and how to get to each.

1. Isla Mujeres

Some of the best snorkeling in Playa del Carmen can include swimming with whale sharks in Isla Mujeres

Let’s start big — both figuratively and literally. Figuratively, it’s a big day and a big experience. Literally, how about 40-foot, 15-ton whale sharks?

If that sounds intriguing to you, one of the best places on the planet to swim with these gentle giants is near an island just off the coast of Cancun named Isla Mujeres.

Every summer from roughly June through September, hundreds of these gorgeous school bus-sized sharks (don’t worry, they have absolutely zero interest in munching on people) congregate in the blue waters off of Isla Mujeres and Isla Holbox off the tip of the Yucatan peninsula to feed on a seasonal influx of fish eggs and tiny crustaceans which compose a large share of their diet.

And, yep, you can swim right along side them as they do. Truthfully, it’s magical.

Ocean Tours Mexico has done a great job of figuring out the logistics of getting you from the Riviera Maya to the whale sharks, which frees you up to just enjoy a bucket-list experience.

As I mentioned, it’s a big day coming from the mainland and for that reason it’s 100% worth it to book with a tour company that will take care of all of your transportation, boats, meals, etc. Our favorite tour is with Ocean Tours Mexico (on Viator) since they’re one of the few tours operating from the Riviera Maya that seems to have been able to put together a seamless day getting you from and back to your hotel with all of the needed vans and boats. Plus, their guides have always ben super friendly, fun and knowledgeable which really makes a big difference in a full-day tour.

If swimming with such big, big leviathans makes you a little uncomfortable, that’s OK. It might seem a little intimidating, but it’s truly a blast, very safe, and something you will remember for the rest of your life. We’ve written up a guide with more information on swimming with whale sharks (and doing it at Isla Mujeres) over at Swim with Whale Sharks: The 3 Unbeatable Best Places to Snorkel & Dive which should help you feel more confident, informed and excited.

[ Google Maps Link to Puerto Juarez , where the ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres departs, if you need to get to the island yourself.]

2. Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos, Mexico lighthouse near the Mesoamerican Reef for snorkeling

If you’re needing a bit of a break from the immensity of Playa del Carmen, Cancun or Tulum but aren’t yet ready to completely disconnect and move into a hut on the beach, Puerto Morelos might be what you’re looking for.

Not only does this much smaller and slower-paced town (about 25 minutes south of Cancun or 25 minutes north of Play del Carmen) have a great beach with lots of good food and plenty of snorkel and scuba amenities, it also has some of the absolute best snorkeling in Playa del Carmen (or nearby, technically).

Snorkeling with beautiful fish in the Mesoamerican Reef

The biggest reason for its high class of snorkeling is the Mesoamerican Reef system, which spans over 700 miles from Honduras to Cancun making it the second longest barrier reef system in the world behind only the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. And, here at Puerto Morelos, it makes its closest contact with the coast, making it perfect for snorkeling.

At this national park you’ll see all manner of marine life: multitudes of colorful tropical fish, different types of rays, turtles, squid, octopuses, and maybe even the occasional small nurse shark. It really feels like you’ve hit the jackpot, especially for how easy it is to get here.

If you have your own car and drive into the town of Puerto Morelos, park somewhere near the town square (you can’t miss it on your way in) and head to the small malecón near the infamous crooked lighthouse on the beach. There, you’ll find plenty of people organizing snorkel tours and it’s easy to get in on one which will take you out to the reef (about a 5-minute boat ride) for an hour and a half or so. It’s well worth it and definitely some of the best snorkeling in Playa del Carmen (or anywhere nearby).

Wisest Travel will take care of your transportation to Puerto Morelos for you before taking you to two of the best spots along the Mesoamerican Reef in the national park.

Or, if you don’t have your own transport, booking a half-day tour online is plenty easy and still plenty affordable.

We really like Wisest Travel’s snorkel tour to Puerto Morelos (here on Viator) for car-less folks because they have easy and comfortable transportation to and from town. Then, once in the water, the guides are really good with all levels of snorkelers and will take the time to help you if you’re newer to the sport, or take you right to best spots with the highest probability of seeing the coolest marine life if you’re already good to go.

Some of the best snorkeling in Playa del Carmen is actually just across the way in Cozumel

Another island just off of the coast of the Riviera Maya also has world-class snorkeling, and that’s Cozumel. But, it’s some of the best snorkeling in Play del Carmen (or nearby) for different reasons than Isla Mujeres above.

Instead of being a famous gathering point for the world’s biggest fish like its more northern sibling, Cozumel is instead known for having some of the best reefs in Mexico which attract a multitude of aquatic life, especially in national parks like Arrecifes de Cozumel .

And, fortunately, it’s pretty easy to get here, especially if you’re already in Play del Carmen since ferries run back and forth between Cozumel and the ferry port in Playa del Carmen every hour or two.

A hammock in Cozumel

Both Ultramar and Winjet run ferries either daily or on an alternating bi-daily schedule (depending on the season) which makes it a breeze to take a day trip over to the island since the ferry only takes about 30 minutes (and especially if you opt to spend the extra few bucks for a first class ticket for quicker boarding and more space on the ferry, which is totally worth it). You can — and should, for time’s sake — buy tickets online before you show up.

Once you arrive in Cozumel, there will be plenty of people available at the ferry port with snorkel tours, jeep trips, and plenty of other adventures. But, I’ve always found it to be a bit chaotic and since there are so many snorkel trips available on the island, it’s hard to know which ones are better than others. So, this is a spot where I think it makes more sense to book a tour online in advance.

Cozumel Tours and Excursions will pick you up from the ferry port and make sure that you snorkel at three of the best reefs on the island: Palancar, Columbia and El Cielo.

And, to that end, I really dig Cozumel Tours and Excursions’ snorkel trip to the Palancar, Columbia and El Cielo reefs (here on Viator) on the island. Not only will they pick you up at the ferry port (which is helpful, because while the port town of San Miguel de Cozumel is worth a stop-in for lunch or dinner on the way back, when I arrive in the morning, I just want to get straight to snorkeling), but they’re also really knowledgeable about the ins and outs of the best snorkeling spots on the southern end of the island where the best reef activity tends to be.

4. Sian Ka’an

Dolphins in Sian Ka'an near Tulum

More toward the southern end of the Riviera Maya (starting just south of Tulum) lies Sian Ka’an, a massive biosphere reserve set aside in the name of preservation of the truest nature of this part of Mexico.

Sian Ka’an means something along the lines of “the place where the heavens are born” in the Mayan language, and you’ll get just that: a little taste of heaven with expansive skies birthing out of pristine waters, healthy mangroves, rustling palms, and plenty of spots for epic snorkeling.

This biosphere is also a place where booking a tour is going to go a long way towards having a good day. It’s a bit of a drive along tough roads to get into the park (so it’s good to have the right vehicle and someone who knows where they’re going) and, once you’re there, you need access to a network of boats and drivers to move you around the expansive reserve (so it’s great to have someone who knows the what, where, who and when of all this).

Mexico Kan Tours really delivered on an incredible nature (and snorkeling) experience in Sian Ka'an for us.

We had an exceptional time with Mexico Kan Tours (Viator) on their full day Sian Ka’an excursion, and they would be my recommended choice for the area. They took care of all of our needed transportation (both car and boat), lunch, and provided that extra expertise that took us to all of the right spots to have the best experience with the nature of the area.

As a result, we saw bunches of crocodiles patrolling the lagoons (this is not where you snorkel, FYI), a mother manatee teaching her calf how to eat sea grass, mating sea turtles, tons of roosting sea birds, several pods of dolphins literally leaping from the water around the boat, giant lobsters, loads of tropical fish, and plenty else. I hope the same for you!

A sea turtle seen while snorkeling in Akumal, the closest of the best snorkeling in Playa del Carmen

If you’re a big fan of sea turtles (and really, who isn’t?), then Akumal might be your own top pick for the best snorkeling in Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya.

Known for the frisky sea turtles who inhabit its coasts and munch on the sea grass that grows there, this resort town about a half hour south of Playa del Carmen can be a dream for turtle lovers. Some care should be taken to be kind to our turtle friends here, however.

While it’s possible to snorkel directly from shore at the main beach here (you do officially need to snorkel with a guide since it’s a protected area, though it is possible to find one on the beach), the main snorkeling area can get crowded and some of the turtles here show signs of stress from just being bothered too much.

Ocean Tours Mexico does a great job getting you alongside sea turtles in Akumal while still caring for their wellbeing before taking you to a pretty incredible cavern cenote.

Instead, it’s a better idea to book a tour with a reputable snorkel guide that can take you to some less traveled areas and educate on how to best treat these beautiful ocean creatures to make sure they stay healthy while having an epic time yourself.

Our pick for the best Akumal turtle snorkel tour is Ocean Tours Mexico (here on Viator) for the very reasons I just mentioned. Not only do they know the right spots where you can see turtles in a less crowded environment, but they care about the turtles and the environment and will show you the best way to do so, too. Plus, the second half of their tour takes you to swim and snorkel in a cenote that flows through huge caves and caverns which is a blast and a unique experience in itself.

6. Yal Ku Lagoon

Snorkeling at Yal Ku Lagoon near Akumal

If you’re in Akumal and the ocean snorkeling isn’t cooperating (maybe it’s windy or wavy), or if you just want a second excellent spot to snorkel after snorkeling with the turtles, Yal Ku Lagoon is a great option.

Situated behind a protected strip of land just a few minutes north of the town of Akumal, this calm lagoon is full of tropical fish, rays, and plenty of other marine life that may be looking for a bit of calmer spot to chill for a while. Also the site of a natural cenote which brings fresh water up from underground to mix with the sea water, the calm water is excellent for beginner or expert snorkelers alike.

You'll see plenty of fish with the best snorkeling in Playa del Carmen

Yal Ku is easy to get to by car (or taxi, especially from Akumal) and there are some facilities here (palapas, nearby restaurants, platforms and ladders to easily get in and out of the water, etc.), which also means that there are some costs involved. Entrance fees for adults are about $15 while kids are around $12. However, it’s still plenty worth it since the marine life is always plentiful.

If you’re interested in a grander experience in the area, Cancun Adventures does a really nice job with their Tulum ruins, Yal Ku snorkeling, cenotes and caves tour (here on Viator) that will allow you to experience some of the major highlights in and around Tulum in addition to Yal Ku.

A cenote is a spot for great snorkeling near Playa del Carmen

One highly-unique feature of the Riviera Maya and the Yucatan Peninsula as a whole is its cenotes. And, while it may not be your first thought, cenotes can make for some of the best snorkeling in Playa del Carmen and the surrounding areas.

If you’re not familiar, cenotes are essentially holes (sometimes very large holes) in the ground where fresh water rises up from deeper within the earth. There are no rivers in the Yucatan and this, instead, is how the fresh water makes it to the surface.

Some cenotes are wildly deep — dark blue holes plunging hundreds of feet into the earth — and are only really interesting to scuba divers (or general surface-swimming recreationists). But, some are much shallower and have tons of fascinating and unique aquatic life.

Maybe the best snorkeling in Playa del Carmen when it comes to cenotes is Cenote Jardin del Eden, a large open-air cenote about 20 minutes south of Playa and just outside the town of Puerto Aventuras. It’s a fantastic cenote for snorkeling because of its size (so it won’t feel crowded), crystal-clear water, and varying depths and underwater scenery — perfect to check out the multitude of fish that live there and come away with a very unique snorkeling experience. The entrance fee is reasonable at about $10.

Woody Simental runs an excellent tour to three top snorkeling cenotes: Jardin del Eden, Cristalino and Azul.

If you do check out Jardin del Eden and want more cenote snorkeling in your life, the nearby Cenote Azul and Cenote Cristalino are both other great options. They’re very similar to Jardin del Eden in look, feel and vibe, but just a little smaller. If you visit Cenote Azul especially, make sure to dip your feet in the water for a very thorough fish pedicure.

If you’re looking to avoid driving, one of the most efficient ways to see multiple cenotes is on a cenote tour of the area. One of the best is with Woody Simental Tours (here on Viator) which will take care of all of your transportation, snorkel equipment (if you need it) and a guide while you visit each of the best aforementioned snorkeling cenotes: Jardin del Eden, Azul and Cristalino.

What to Know About Snorkeling in Mexico

Snorkeling in Mexico is more or less like snorkeling anywhere else in the world with a few exceptions, and there are just a handful of specific things that you should know.

First, on all snorkeling tours and/or if you’re snorkeling in any of the national parks or reserves in Mexico, a chaleco (life jacket) is required when you’re in the water. This can be a bit annoying for more experienced snorkelers, but it’s done for safety as well as for general preservation of the undersea environment.

Snorkeling in Mexico

Next, if you’re snorkeling in a more sensitive area (like with the whale sharks off of Isla Mujeres or in cenotes on the mainland), sunscreen of any kind is not allowed. This can be a little annoying, too, but again it’s done for the preservation of delicate ecosystems and sensitive marine life, which is very worthwhile. Instead of sunscreen, make sure that you have a rashguard (a kind of water-friendly shirt) to wear in the water to keep your skin from getting burned. I really like the Volcom Short Sleeve Rashguard (Amazon) for men, and my wife is partial to the REKITA Long Sleeve Rashguard (Amazon) for women.

Lastly, when you do put on sunscreen in Mexico, make certain that your sunscreen is fully reef safe, even if you’re only applying it to lay out on the beach. That’s because the sunscreen which later gets rinsed off in the shower inevitably ends up back in the ocean in some fashion, and many of the ingredients in traditional sunscreens are really harmful to coral reefs which need all the help we can give them to stay beautiful and healthy. For more guidance on reef-safe sunscreen, check out our write-up on the topic, The 2 Best Snorkeling Sunscreens (Reef Safe & Biodegradable) .

Bonus: Other Things to Do in the Riviera Maya

El Castillo at Chichén Itzá

Even though the focus throughout the Riviera Maya is its incredible white sand beaches and turquoise waters (as well it should be) which are the gateway to the best snorkeling in Play del Carmen and the Riviera Maya, there are also a ton of other things going on in the area from deep-sea fishing to catamaran cruising to cenote hopping to Mayan ruins trips.

If you need a little break from snorkeling, here are some other excellent tours (offered through Viator) to complement your best snorkeling in Playa Del Carmen, Cancun, Tulum, etc.:

  • Chichén Itzá, Cenote and Valladolid All-Inclusive Tour — One of the top things you absolutely have to do while you’re in the Riviera Maya is visit Chichén Itzá. The main temple, El Castillo (pictured above), is one of the 7 Wonders of the World and the entire archeology site is really something to behold. Sat Mexico Tours runs a really fun day trip to Chichén Itzá with extra stops on the way back at Cenote Saamal (great if you don’t have time to visit any other cenotes for this unique type of snorkeling) and Valladolid, a Spanish colonial city in the heart of the Yucatan. Their guides are bilingual, super knowledgeable and fun, and they can pick you up pretty much anywhere along the Riviera. This tour to the Tulum ruins, Yal Ku, two cenotes and caves is one of the best well-rounded historic and nature-oriented tours in the Riviera Maya.
  • Tulum Ruins, Yal Ku Snorkeling, Cenotes and Caves — The second most popular Mayan ruins that people visit in the Riviera Maya is Tulum. It’s a completely different experience; whereas Chichen Itza is nestled in the Yucatan jungle, Tulum is perched on a stunning cliffside over the Caribbean. This tour by Cancun Adventures not only guides you through Tulum, but also takes you to Yal Ku Lagoon (one of our picks for the best snorkeling in Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya above) for some special snorkeling and to two other fascinating spots for cenote swimming and caving. It’s an awesome way to get a taste of both epic Mayan ruins and the unique kind of nature that the Riviera Maya provides.
  • Isla Mujeres Catamaran Tour with Open Bar — Feeling more like relaxing in the sun on a catamaran as it glides across the blue waves to an island off of Cancun? Sat Mexico Tours (the same good people from the Chichen Itza tour) runs a fantastic tour where you’ll get to visit Isla Mujeres and Playa Norte (consistently rated one of the top 10 beaches in the world) with some excellent reef snorkeling and an open bar along the way. If you have a larger group, Cancun Sailing Catamarans has essentially the same trip but with a private boat here .
  • Private Fishing Charter for Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Barracuda, etc. — There are truly some huge fish off of the coast of Cancun and the Riviera Maya, and Cancun Boat & Yachts does a fantastic job putting their clients in the right spots to land some of these beauties. If you have a smaller group (up to 6 people), the above tour is a great fit. Or, if you have a larger group (up to 12 people), Cancun Fishing Tours also does a fantastic job with their fishing charter here .
  • Xcaret Day Trip + Night Show + Transportation (a really cool ecological and archaeological park with lots to do)
  • Xplor Adventure Park + Transportation (a unique adventure park with ziplining, amphibious vehicles, subterranean rivers, and a lot else)
  • Jolly Roger Pirate Night Show and Dinner in Cancun (a sailing, swashbuckling Caribbean pirate dinner show on a pirate ship)
  • Horseback Riding and Cenote Swim (a great day doing exactly what it sounds like)
  • ATV Jungle Adventure with Ziplines, Cenote & Tequila Tasting (once more, a great day [this time in the jungle] doing exactly what it sounds like 🙂)

As great as the best snorkeling in Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya is, there’s certainly a lot more you can experience on your trip!

The Deep Dive

Mexico’s Riviera Maya destination cities like Cancun, Playa del Carmen or Tulum are each paradises in their own right, but they typically don’t have the best snorkeling options (at least not right in town). Instead, you’ll need to know where to look just outside of town to find what you’re seeking.

With a little guidance (hopefully this read was helpful!), you’ll be able to find those epic snorkeling spots and enjoy some of the best snorkeling in Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Tulum and the Riviera Maya as a whole. Whether you have a car and strike out on your own or take some of the tours listed in this guide, you’re certain to have a great time.

Happy travels! Vaya con Dios!

Make sure that you’re up to date on your snorkel gear (it’s nice not having to rent it or rely on tours to provide it for you, but you can) before striking out to find the best snorkeling in Playa del Carmen, and read up on some of our other guides that may help you in the Riviera Maya:

Where to go snorkeling in Playa Del Carmen

When visiting many people want to know where to go snorkeling in Playa Del Carmen. This is reasonable since we are on the ocean and have some excellent spots nearby. Here is a complete guide to where you can snorkel. This guide has everything from the ocean to cenotes where you can go.

Snorkeling off the coast of Playa Del Carmen

The ocean waters off Playa Del Carmen are beautiful and tempting to dive in with a mask and snorkel. What will you see snorkeling off the beach in Playa Del Carmen? Much of the water is blue and empty with just sand bottom. There is one close spot where you can go snorkeling in Playa De Carmen.

On the north end of Playa Del Carmen just past CTM Avenue otherwise know as 46th Street. There is a reef just past where boats park (see photo below). In the photo below you can see the dark area where the reef is.

It is possible to snorkel from the beach to the reef. However it is best if you have a float with you not only for support since it is a distance but also for visibility. This can be an active area with boats.

Snorkeling here should not be done by first time snorkelers and care should be taken navigating the boats.

snorkeling in Playa Del Carmen

Cenotes near Playa Del Carmen to snorkel in

Cenotes are formed when ground water wears away the limestone and creates a pool of water. Some cenotes are open and some still have a cavern roof. These fresh water spots can be great for snorkeling because the visibility is clear usually and you don’t have any waves to worry about. So what cenotes are the best places to snorkel? Here are a couple cenotes we recommend.

Cenote El Jardin del Eden

We like this cenote for snorkeling because it is open, it has varying depths, fish, plants and interesting things to see. You can read more about going to Cenote Eden in our article here and see our long video with more details.

snorkeling in Playa Del Carmen

Cenote Azul and Cenote Cristalino

Cenote Azul and Cenote Cristalino are two cenotes right next to Cenote Eden. These two cenotes are also open cenotes and beautiful. You can still snorkel in them and enjoy the crystal clear waters. There is just a little less space than Cenote Eden.

Casa Cenote

Casa Cenote is further down the coast from Playa Del Carmen near Tulum. What makes Casa Cenote so nice for snorkeling is the clear water. It is also large enough to have kayaks in. The setting is in the mangroves and near the ocean. In fact, after you snorkel there is a restaurant across the street where you can eat. The restaurant is on the ocean with great views.

Other cenotes for snorkeling in the area

Most cenotes are nice to snorkel in because the visibility is so clear. For a list and map of where other cenotes are, see our guide here to  cenotes close to Playa Del Carmen .

Snorkeling tours from Playa Del Carmen

Snorking the reef in puerto morelos tour.

The reef off of Puerto Morelos is well known for snorkeling. This area is just about 30 minutes north of Playa Del Carmen. There are tours that can take you here for a half day adventure.

There is also this company that does snorkeling tours off the coast of Puerto Morelos.

Catamaran tours with snorkeling in Puerto Aventuras

Do you want to sail up the coast of the Riviera Maya and get a chance to go snorkeling in a remote spot? This tour combines several things for you. Below are two companies that do this tour. The companies are a little different, so we suggest you read about them before choosing one.

Fat Cat Catamaran

Fat Cat uses their 45 ft. boat to sail you up the coast from Puerto Aventuras. Once you arrive at the reef, they give you snorkel gear and fins. There is a guided swim around the reef. After snorkeling there is an open bar on board and a bagged lunch offered.

For more about the Fat Cat Catamaran tour see our article here which also includes a video of this tour.

Catamaya Catamaran

Catamaya has a 65 ft. catamaran that sails from Puerto Aventuras as well. This tour takes you up the coast and the to a reef to snorkel. After you snorkel this tour has four options for lunch like steak or lobster. There is an open bar as well. You can see our video in our article on Catamaya Catamaran tour .

Snorkeling Playa Del Carmen

Private Tour to Tulum reef

Yes, Tulum has a beautiful reef just off the coast. Most people don’t know this because there are not large tours that go there. So this is something of a hidden gem. The snorkeling is good, and you will see a lot of coral and fish here. It took us a while to discover it and it was only because of a private tour we went on. Absolute Adventure Mexico is a private tour company that can take you here as well as cenotes in the area. You can see the full article and video in the link here to Absolute Adventure Mexico . This is one private tour company we recommend.

Xel-Ha snorkel park-the mother of all snorkeling

Xel-Ha is a huge park where you can snorkel all day. The park is an inlet from the ocean where the fresh ground water flows into the ocean. Here you can see tropical fish and snorkel all day! This area is huge. You start at the beginning the of the “river” in a mangrove area and then have the entire inlet, caves and other places to explore.

Xel-Ha Park is an all-day activity and all inclusive. Your entrance includes all food and drinks (including domestic alcoholic drinks). Xel-Ha is open daily from 8:30am-6:00pm. For tips on getting the best deal on tickets, our video and everything you need to have a great day in Xel- Ha, see our article here .

One Tour to Xel-Ha that Includes Tulum Ruins

If you would like a tour to Xel-Ha and perhaps want to include a Mayan ruin in the same day, here is a tour for you! This tour combines two very popular attractions in one tour. Your tour starts from a pickup at your hotel and then the morning seeing Tulum ruins. The afternoon is spent at Xel-Ha where you can snorkel all afternoon. This is an all-inclusive tour, so you have great food options, alcoholic drinks included and much more. See more about this tour in our video below and article here about this Tulum ruins and Xel-Ha tour.

Other places to go snorkeling near Playa Del Carmen

Yal ku lagoon for snorkeling.

Yal Ku Lagoon is a small inlet from the ocean that is like a mini Xel Ha. This natural area is open to the public in Akumal. You can come here by yourself or with a tour.

At Yal Ku Lagoon you can pay for admission and bring your own snorkel and mask or rent them. For more about visiting the Yal Ku Lagoon in Akumal see our article here .

Snorkeling off Isla Mujeres

The waters off Isla Mujeres offer great snorkeling. A snorkel trip with a local guide can be easily arranged when you arrive on the island. Here is our article about snorkeling with the Cooperativa Isla Mujeres . These trips are very affordable and make for a great day trip from Cancun or Playa Del Carmen.

Not only can you see some shallow water reefs, but you can also see the Musa Museum of over 470 underwater statues that create an artificial reef.

Buying snorkel equipment in Playa Del Carmen

If you are coming for a week or even staying longer and want to purchase your own equipment, it is fairly easy. If you are looking for recreational quality snorkeling equipment, Walmart or the other grocery stores in Playa Del Carmen are a good source. Here you can buy a mask and tube from around $20USD-$45USD.

If you want to buy professional equipment, we suggest going to one of the dive shops in Playa Del Carmen.

Really looking forward to snorkeling when in Playa del Carmen. Thanks for all the ideas and places.

Howdy! Great article with lots of great places to check out. I will be using this on my next trip down.

We love to snorkel in Yal Ku Lagoon. I just hope they keep the prices low. Take care!!

That’s a great list of places! I am going to visit in June and going to use your list.

How is the snorkeling now? Is the seaweed going to make it hard to see things?Do the tours go yearround?

Tours are year round and the ocean temps are good for swimming even in winter. If there is seaweed it usually is more built up on the beach and not near the reefs so the viability is not harmed. You can still enjoy snorkeling in the area

Snorkeling in Playa del Carmen? Where to find the best spots to Snorkel

Updated: Sep 7, 2022

Are you wondering where you can go snorkeling in Playa del Carmen? In this post, we have put together the best snorkeling spots, including how to get there. Playa del Carmen may not be the best place for snorkeling in the Riviera Maya, but if you know where to go you can find some great places to snorkel.

playa del carmen snorkeling tour

Snorkeling in Playa del Carmen - South of Playacar

Although you can put on your snorkeling gear and snorkel anywhere in Playa del Carmen, there really isn’t much to see along most of the coast. The one exception is to the south of Playacar. You will need to go right to the end of the beach where it gets rocky and swim out. We would not recommend doing this with children or if you are not a strong swimmer. It is also highly recommended to go always with a buddy (at least one other person) and have a buoy with you. Stay close to the shore, because boats are passing by.

What can you see?

Right in front of Playa del Carmen, the coral reef (second largest in the world) is laying roughly 150 - 200 meters offshore at a depth of 10-15 meters. That is why snorkeling there is not the best experience due to the depth and distance to the beach. When going south of Playacar more rocks will appear which are a natural habitat to many tropical fish, Caribbean spiny lobsters octopus, crab and you might encounter stingrays.

Do not walk on the rocks since they are sharp and also partially full of surgeons. We don’t want you to get a bloody toe or worse.

How to get to the snorkeling spot in Playacar

To get here can be tricky. You can either get a taxi to take you into Playacar and then right to the end. Or you can go by bike. Enter through the main entrance at the end of 5th Avenue and then cycle right along. The third option would be walking down the beach starting at the ferry terminal at Parque Fundadores in Central Playa del Carmen.

The Best Snorkeling Near Playa del Carmen - Puerto Morelos

playa del carmen snorkeling tour

If you have the time to travel then the best snorkeling near Playa del Carmen can be found in Puerto Morelos. You have two options here, you can do a tour, or swim out to the reef in the swimming area yourself. Please inform yourself about the restricted areas and the strict rules of the Marine Park of Puerto Morelos.

If you want to take a tour you will easily find a company to take you if you just make your way to the dock. Most tours cost $25 USD and for that, you will be provided with a mask, snorkel, fins and a life jacket. They will take you to two different locations on the reef and a professional certified (we and the local guides take courses) tour guide will guide you along the reef pointing out anything exciting he or she sees.

If you prefer to ‘do-it-yourself’ then the only place you can access the reef is by heading to Ojo de Agua. From here you can swim out to a part of the reef. You will need to be careful not to swim out of the cornered off swimming area though as it can be dangerous due to the passing boats.

What makes the snorkeling in Puerto Morelos so special is just how shallow the reef is. You can float right over the top or snorkel alongside it and have excellent vision, without having to dive down. The water is often dead calm, making it great for anyone who is nervous about swimming in open water. When snorkeling life jackets are mandatory.

playa del carmen snorkeling tour

What can you see snorkeling in Puerto Morelos?

Well, there are over 669 species of marine life living there. It is very common to see stingrays, turtles, permit fish, queen shell, groupers, lobsters and barracudas.

How to get to Puerto Morelos from Playa del Carmen

To get from Playa del Carmen to Puerto Morelos you can take a taxi, ADO bus, or a Colectivo from Calle 2 heading to Cancun. Puerto Morelos is the stop in between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. When you exit the bus or colectivo you will need to turn right onto the main road leading into the town and here you will see taxis. A taxi will cost you $35 pesos and walking will take you roughly 20 minutes.

Other places to snorkel near to Playa del Carmen

playa del carmen snorkeling tour

Xpu-Ha beach is just 20-minutes from Playa del Carmen and one of the nicest beaches you can go to. It has great beach clubs and the beach is one of the cleanest and most underdeveloped in the area. It’s a great beach to spend the day chilling out with the family and doing some snorkeling.

The coral formations are in patches here separated by sandy stretches. So there is plenty to explore. You will need to be careful not to swim in the shallow coral parts as you run the risk of touching the coral, and also potentially hurting yourself. There is ‘fire’ coral here which is going to hurt if you come into contact with it.

As well as colorful fish there is a good chance of seeing sting rays and even the occasional turtle here.

How to get to Xpu Ha

To get to Xpu Ha from Playa del Carmen it couldn’t be easier. You can either take a colectivo from Calle 2 or alternatively, you can take a taxi. If you take a colectivo you will have to walk down to the beach from the main road.

playa del carmen snorkeling tour

Cozumel is the number 1 diving spot in the Riviera Maya, but it is also great for snorkeling. You have 2 options here you can take the public ferry over and then head to one of the beach clubs from which you can swim out to the reef or you can do one of the Cozumel snorkeling tours from Playa del Carmen.

If you are going over to Cozumel just to snorkel then we would recommend booking a tour before you go (it can get a bit overwhelming when you get bombarded with salespeople getting off the ferry) to save stress. If you want a relaxing day at a beach club and to be able to just swim out on your own then the best place to go to is Money Bar. From here you can swim out to the reef, just look for the other snorkelers.

If you do decide to go without a boat you will need to be a confident swimmer and also take some kind of marker so the passing boats can see you. We recommend a colored dry bag that you can swim with.

If you want the best snorkeling in Cozumel we would recommend taking a tour though as the boat will be able to access far more places than you can swim to, and the captain and tour guides will keep you safe. Cozumel is well known for its strong currents (drift diving) so please be very careful in the water. If in doubt ask a local.

In Cozumel, you will always see a lot of very bright and colorful fish. But other things will depend on the season, what part of the reef you are snorkeling on, and a bit of luck. Cozumel is regarded as one of the best diving spot in the world thanks to its excellent visibility. During December to March it is eagle ray season, the rest of the year you are very likely to see turtles.

How to get to Cozumel

From Playa del Carmen you can take a snorkel tour with us and we will arrange everything for you. Alternatively, you can simply hop on the ferry from Playa del Carmen. The journey lasts around 40 minutes and you can find the timetable here . Once you get off the ferry take a taxi to the Money Bar. Don’t pay more than $150 pesos the fair should be $110 pesos, but the taxi drivers sometimes like to take advantage of tourists not knowing the correct fares.

In Tulum, you will find the reef about 300 meters from the shore. You will need to book a Tulum snorkel tour. The boat will take you out to the reef and you will get to snorkel in two different areas.

As the reef in Tulum is part of the Great Mayan Reef system you can expect to see a lot of colorful fish, huge barracudas, and if you are lucky you might even see a turtle or two.

How to get to Tulum from Playa del Carmen

From Playa del Carmen you can take a Taxi, ADO bus or a colectivo from Calle 2. You can ask the taxi to take you directly to the beach where you can book a tour or swim out. If you take a colectivo or the bus they will drop you in Tulum Town . From here you will find plenty of tour agencies where you can book a tour and they will take you to the beach. Or take a taxi for $80 pesos. If you want to spend the day exploring Tulum the best way to do this is by renting a bike for the day. It will cost around $100 pesos for the day and you can use the bike to see the Mayan Ruins, Tulum’s beaches, and maybe even a cenote.

Snorkeling in Cenotes

playa del carmen snorkeling tour

An alternative to snorkeling in the sea is to go snorkeling in a freshwater cenote.

Not sure what a cenote is? Take a read of this post we wrote explaining exactly what a cenote is .

There are so many cenotes that you can explore in the Riviera Maya, you really will be spoilt for choice. Although some Cenotes are better than others for snorkeling. The Cenotes that we particularly recommend for snorkeling in are:

This really varies from cenote to cenote. However, you will see freshwater fish, possible freshwater turtles, incredibly underwater cave formations, and out of this world rays of light. Plus getting to snorkel in a cave is pretty awesome.

How to get to Cenotes

Most of the quieter cenotes you will either need to hire a car or driver to get to. Or even better take a tour . If you don't mind sharing the water with the masses though there are several cenotes accessible from the main road between Playa del Carmen and Tulum like the well known Dos Ojos. You can just take a colectivo from Calle 2 and tell the driver where you want to go.

GENERAL REMINDER WHEN SNORKELING: DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING - DO NOT TAKE SOUVENIRS - DO NOT STAND UP ON CORAL - USE LIFE JACKETS - DO NOT PUT SUNSCREEN ON BEFORE SNORKELING, THESE ARE VERY HARMFUL TO THE FRAGILE ECOSYSTEM - USE RASH GUARDS - SNORKELING IS A PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND OUT OF OUR EXPERIENCE MANY TIMES UNDERESTIMATED - DO TURNS OF 20-30 MINUTES AND GET REST - DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL.
