Do Citi cards have travel insurance?

Car rental insurance, costco anywhere visa® card by citi travel insurance benefits, citi® / aadvantage® executive world elite mastercard® travel insurance coverage, does citibank offer travel insurance.

Citi credit cards provide a host of benefits, including some generous points and miles earning opportunities (depending on the card you have).

But, when it comes to travel insurance, let’s just say it’s not necessarily Citi cards' strong suit.

Still, there are Citibank travel insurance benefits you should know about to ensure you use the right card when paying for your next trip. Here are the primary benefits associated with Citi card travel insurance.

Only two Citi cards have travel insurance, and each one has a different set of benefits: The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi and the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® .

Citibank Costco-Anywhere Visa Card Credit Card

on Citibank's application

Citibank Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ MasterCard® Credit Card

Both cards provide rental car insurance.

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi also offers roadside assistance, worldwide travel accident insurance and a 24/7 concierge for travel and emergency assistance. The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® , on the other hand, offers baggage protection, trip cancellation/interruption insurance and trip delay protections.

» Learn more: Best Citi credit cards right now

If you use either of the two Citi credit cards listed above to pay for a car rental, Citi travel insurance will protect any damages to a rental car up to $50,000.

This amount will cover the cost of repairs or the cash value of the car, whichever is lower. It applies anywhere you rent a car — there are no geographic limitations — as long as the rental period is no longer than 31 days. Citibank travel insurance covers accidental damage, theft, vandalism or a natural disaster, and any necessary towing costs.

Citi's rental car insurance is secondary when renting a car within the U.S., but if you're renting outside of the country, it switches to primary coverage.

With secondary insurance, you need to rely on any other insurance coverage you have before Citi’s car rental insurance kicks in. Primary insurance, alternatively, will be the first line of coverage you have.

Coverage wouldn't apply if you rent the car to someone else or operate a rental car as a rideshare vehicle. It also only covers the car, not any personal injuries that might result from an accident.

There are several types of vehicles that are excluded from coverage. These include:

Trucks, pickup trucks, trailers, full-size vans on a truck chassis or recreational vehicles like campers and off-road vehicles.

Motorcycles or motorized bikes.

Commercial vehicles or cargo vans.

Any vehicle with fewer than four wheels.

Antique vehicles older than 20 years or that have not been made in the past decade.

Limousines.

Sport-utility trucks or open, flat-bed trucks.

Any vehicle that retails for over $50,000.

Roadside assistance

When driving in the U.S., roadside assistance is available for Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi cardholders by calling 866-918-4670.

Roadside assistance is valuable in the event of an accident, loss of fuel or other vehicle malfunction. Keep in mind that you would still have to pay for the assistance (like a tow truck, for example), but this benefit makes it easy to reach someone with one phone call.

Citi card provides access to similar assistance as a membership program like AAA . The difference is that AAA’s annual fee covers roadside assistance fees while Citi's coverage doesn't; it solely provides access to someone who can help you for a reduced rate.

Several credit cards provide some type of roadside assistance and are worth considering before paying the annual fee for AAA.

Worldwide travel accident insurance

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi includes accident insurance, which covers the cardholder or family members if they are injured or killed when traveling on a common carrier (any vehicle that is licensed to carry passengers like a bus, plane, cruise ship or train).

You will need to have used the Citi card to cover the entire cost of the travel on that common carrier for the benefit to apply. The maximum coverage is $250,000.

» Learn more: How does travel insurance work?

Travel and emergency assistance

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi card provides access to a 24/7 concierge to help you with a disruption to your trip. This can include medical assistance, referrals to a doctor or legal help. It can also help if you need to adjust travel plans.

Just remember, you’ll be responsible for paying for any services used, but the call is toll-free.

Baggage protection

Only available for the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® , this luggage protection provides coverage if your checked bag is stolen, lost or damaged.

The insurance covers as much as $3,000 per person ($2,000 for New York residents), but only kicks in if you use the card or American AAdvantage miles to pay for the trip.

» Learn more: The guide to baggage insurance

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

If a covered traveler has a medical emergency or dies, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® coverage can provide reimbursement for up to $5,000 in eligible nonrefundable expenses.

You would need to use the card or American AAdvantage miles to pay for the trip.

Trip delay protection

Another benefit that’s reserved only for the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® is trip delay protection . This coverage kicks in if your trip is delayed by at least six hours, and offers reimbursement for expenses incurred during the delay, up to $500 per trip.

This would include reasonable purchases like hotel stays, rental cars and meals.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

Citibank travel insurance is available, but limited. It is only offered on two cards and isn't as comprehensive as other credit cards with travel insurance .

Both cards include rental car coverage, but beyond this, each has its own set of benefits. Depending on which one you hold, it may include coverage like trip delay protection or roadside assistance.

People hold Citi cards for many reasons, including the ability to earn transferable Citi ThankYou Points . But, the travel insurance benefits are somewhat limited. If you have a Citi card, review the travel insurance perks before you take off to understand your coverage.

American Express premium credit cards offer some of the best perks in the credit card space. While lounge access and travel credits are typically the highlights of these cards, some of the lesser-known benefits, such as trip delay reimbursement and trip cancellation and interruption insurance, are becoming hot topics as the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact the travel industry.

What is covered by trip cancellation and interruption insurance?

select platinum travel insurance policy

You can find the full terms and conditions of what is generally covered on your respective card in your Guide to Benefits, which can be found through your online account. I'll use the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve as an example.

Here is a rundown of the "covered losses" provided by Amex's trip cancellation and interruption insurance:

  • Accidental bodily injury or loss of life or sickness of either the eligible traveler, traveling companion or a family member of the eligible traveler or traveling companion
  • Inclement weather, which prevents a reasonable and prudent person from traveling or continuing on a covered trip
  • The eligible traveler or his or her spouse's change in military orders
  • Terrorist action or hijacking
  • Call to jury duty or subpoena by the courts, either of which cannot be postponed or waived
  • The eligible traveler or traveling companion's dwelling made uninhabitable
  • Quarantine imposed by a physician for health reasons

Related: Book carefully if you have multiple Amex cards that offer travel protections

Amex also provides an extensive list of things that are not covered by trip cancellation/interruption insurance:

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • The eligible traveler's suicide, attempted suicide or intentionally self-inflicted injury
  • A declared or undeclared war
  • Mental or emotional disorders, unless hospitalized
  • The eligible traveler's participation in a sporting activity for which he or she receives a salary or prize money
  • The eligible traveler's being intoxicated at the time of an accident. Intoxication is defined by the laws of the jurisdiction where such accident occurs
  • The eligible traveler being under the influence of any narcotic or other controlled substance at the time of an accident, unless the narcotic or other controlled substance is taken and used as prescribed by a Physician
  • The eligible traveler's commission or attempted commission of any illegal or criminal act, including but not limited to any felony
  • The eligible traveler parachuting from an aircraft
  • The eligible traveler engaging or participating in a motorized vehicular race or speed contest
  • Dental treatment except as a result of accidental bodily injury to sound, natural teeth
  • Any non-emergency treatment or surgery, routine physical examinations
  • Hearing aids, eyeglasses or contact lenses
  • One-way travel that does not have a return destination
  • A counterfeit scheduled airline or train ticket; or a scheduled airline or train ticket which is charged to a fraudulently issued or fraudulently used eligible card.
  • Any occurrence while the eligible traveler is incarcerated
  • Loss due to intentional acts by the eligible traveler
  • Financial insolvency of a travel agency, tour operator or travel supplier
  • Any expenses that are not authorized and reimbursable by the eligible traveler's employer if the eligible traveler makes the purchases with a commercial card

If you do find yourself canceling or cutting a covered trip short, here are the basic guidelines provided by Amex on what types of expenses are covered for trip cancellation/interruption:

"If a Covered Loss causes an Eligible Traveler's Trip Interruption, we will reimburse you for the nonrefundable amount paid to a Travel Supplier with your Eligible Card for the following: 1. The forfeited, non-refundable, pre-paid land, air and sea transportation arrangements that were missed; and 2. Additional transportation expenses that the Eligible Traveler incurs less any available refunds, not to exceed the cost of an economy-class air ticket by the most direct route for the Eligible Traveler to rejoin his or her places of origin.
If a Covered Loss causes an Eligible Traveler to temporarily postpone transportation by Common Carrier for a Covered Trip and a new departure date is set, we will reimburse you for the following: 1. The additional expenses incurred to purchase tickets for the new departure (not to exceed the difference between the original fare and the economy fare for the rescheduled Covered Trip by the most direct route); and 2. The unused, non-refundable land, air, and sea arrangements paid to a Travel Supplier with your Eligible Card."

What is covered by trip delay insurance?

select platinum travel insurance policy

Trip delay coverage provides reimbursement for reasonable additional expenses incurred when your trip is delayed due to a covered hazard for more than six hours.

Coverage is limited to $500 per trip and cardmembers are only eligible for two claims each 12 consecutive month period.

Amex outlines what is not covered, which includes the following:

  • Covered losses that are made public or known to the eligible traveler prior to the departure for the covered trip
  • An eligible traveler's expenses paid prior to the covered trip

Filing a claim

When you have a delay or trip cancellation/interruption that you think qualifies for coverage, you can file a claim by calling Amex at 1-844-933-0648 within 60 days of the covered loss.

Trip delay reimbursement requires the following documentation:

  • Proof of loss – You must furnish written proof of loss to Amex within 180 days after the date of your loss
  • Receipts - Acceptable documentation includes the following:
  • A statement from the common carrier that the covered trip was delayed
  • Charge receipt
  • Copies of common carrier ticket(s)
  • Receipts for travel expenses

Trip cancellation/interruption insurance requires slightly different documentation.

  • Proof of loss – You must furnish written proof of loss to Amex within 180 days after the date of your loss. Acceptable documentation includes:
  • Court subpoenas, orders to report for active duty, physician orders, etc.
  • Copies of your common carrier tickets and travel supplier receipt
  • Your eligible card billing statement showing the charges for the covered trip
  • Copy of travel supplier's cancelation policy

After Amex receives notice of your claim, instructions will be sent on how to send the proof. Typically, you have up to 180 days to file a claim after a delay or cancellation.

Proof of flight delay or cancellation

One of the documents required to file for trip delay reimbursement is a verification form that outlines the reason for the delay or cancellation by the carrier. You can typically get this at the airport when the delay or cancellation is announced, but keep in mind that it may require a supervisor. Each U.S. major airline also has a process for requesting this information after the fact.

Here is an overview of the process that major U.S. airlines require for you to receive a delay or cancellation verification form:

Amex cards that offer car rental insurance

Unfortunately, no American Express credit cards offer primary car rental coverage, although most offer secondary coverage. You can see the entire list of cards that offer secondary car rental protection on the American Express website . However, all American Express credit cards offer an optional "Premium Car Rental Protection policy" that can be added to rentals made using the card for a small fee.

Read our guide on when to use American Express' Premium Car Rental Protection for more details on this coverage option.

select platinum travel insurance policy

You can add Premium Car Rental Protection to any American Express card . TPG has a guide of the best American Express cards , but here are some of the best cards in terms of the return you could receive when renting a car. Note, the estimated return rate for these cards is based on TPG's latest valuations:

  • Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card: $450 annual fee (see rates and fees); 4.2% return on car rentals booked directly from car rental companies; no foreign transaction fees (see rates and fees)
  • The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express: $0 annual fee (see rates and fees); 4% return on general spending on the first $50,000 in purchases per calendar year and 1x thereafter; 2.7% foreign transaction fee (see rates and fees)
  • The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express: $95 annual fee; 3% return on general spending in billing cycles where you make 30+ purchases; 2.7% foreign transaction fee

The information for the Amex EveryDay Preferred card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Amex cards that offer baggage insurance

select platinum travel insurance policy

If you're a frequent traveler, you've likely run into this situation at some point (it's the worst). Over the years, airlines have been working on improving the baggage system by introducing live bag tracking. Regardless, it's still a smart idea to have some protections in place, like baggage insurance.

Related: Everything you need to know about Amex's baggage insurance plan

This is why you need to pay attention to the benefits each of your travel rewards cards offers. Nearly all of Amex's premium rewards cards offer baggage insurance. You can check out the full list of cards and details on American Express's website.

The types of losses it covers: You're covered for losses resulting from damaged, stolen or lost baggage, including both carry-on and checked bags.

When you're covered: To be eligible for coverage, you have to travel on a common carrier, which Amex defines as any air, land or water vehicle (other than a personal or rental vehicle) that is licensed to carry passengers for hire and available to the public. Your rental car, as well as taxis and ride-share services such as Uber and Lyft, would be excluded from this protection.

To receive coverage, you also need to pay for the entire fare with an eligible American Express card or by using Membership Rewards points to book tickets through Amex Travel . Trips booked with miles from other sources — even the cobranded Delta SkyMiles cards from Amex — are excluded. Your trip also isn't covered if you used a combination of miles and dollars unless the miles came from a Membership Rewards transfer. This is a welcome change. A few years ago, a TPG staffer found out the hard way that Amex's policy didn't cover frequent flyer mile awards.

Who's covered: This policy covers both primary and additional cardholders, as well as cardmembers' spouses or domestic partners and any dependent children under 23 years old. In addition, travelers must be permanent residents of one of the 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

How much it covers: Most American Express credit cards will cover replacement costs for checked bags and their contents up to $500 per person, although so-called "high-risk items" are only covered for a maximum of $250. These items include jewelry, sporting equipment, photographic or electronic equipment, computers and audio/visual equipment. Carry-on bags are covered for up to $1,250, which is good to know since your belongings could be stolen from the overhead bins.

Amex cards that offer medical assistance

select platinum travel insurance policy

One of the lesser known benefits of some of Amex's most premium cards is its Premium Global Assistance. This benefit can quite literally be a lifesaver if you or an immediate family member run into any unexpected issues or accident on your trip. For example, this service can help you arrange emergency medical referrals.

All Amex cards have access to Amex's Global Assist Hotline, but the Premium Global Assist Hotline and higher level of coverage are reserved exclusively for the Amex's premium cards:

  • The Platinum Card from American Express
  • The Business Platinum Card from American Express
  • American Express Corporate Platinum Card
  • Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card
  • Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card
  • American Express Centurion Card
  • American Express Business Centurion Card

The information for the Amex Centurion and Amex Business Centurion cards has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Bottom line

Having a card with trip insurance can save you hundreds of dollars when unexpected hiccups happen in your travel plans. Still, it can be confusing to know what is covered and the right documentation you need to file a claim.

Nothing is worse than getting through an entire claims process only to be denied or have to start over because you don't have the required documentation for the insurance provider. Before you start filing a claim, make sure you have the documents listed above. Keep in mind that a provider may ask for additional documentation related to the incident, so you may have to collect receipts and other forms to help your case.

If you're starting to travel again, it's also a good idea to consider booking refundable travel . Some airlines and hotels even waive cancelation fees and/or change fees for certain fares, which can make last-minute adjustments in the case of emergencies.

If you travel frequently, chances are you’ve encountered an event that could have been less stressful and less expensive if you’d purchased travel insurance.

Perhaps it was that cruise you booked but couldn’t take due to your broken ankle. Or maybe your flight had a weather delay and were forced to pay for an expensive hotel night, meals, and transportation.

Maybe you made it to your destination without incident — but your luggage never arrived.

Whether you’re escaping for the weekend or planning an around-the-world adventure, travel insurance is worth considering if you would experience financial loss should things go wrong .

But how do you select the right travel insurance company and the appropriate policy for your specific situation?

The vast number of choices can be daunting, but we can help you narrow the options.

In this article we’ll discuss:

  • What travel insurance covers
  • Where and when you should purchase travel insurance
  • The best travel insurance companies for your travel situation
  • Where you should look for current coverage

Let’s explore some of the best travel insurance companies and what to look for when selecting one to purchase your policy with.

Travel insurance is protection you purchase to cover you for the specific types of losses you could experience while traveling.

Types of coverage you can purchase in a travel insurance policy include:

  • Emergency medical care while traveling
  • Evacuation to a hospital should you become injured
  • Costs associated with trip interruption, delay, or cancellation
  • Lost/stolen/damaged luggage
  • You become ill and cannot take a planned trip
  • You need to cancel your trip for any reason

You can purchase a policy that covers an individual trip, multiple trips, or a family policy.  Another choice is an annual policy that covers all of the trips you would take in a 12-month period.

Purchase from a Real Insurance Company

You’ll of course want to purchase your travel insurance from a reputable company. Fortunately, all insurance companies are state regulated and rated financially , so it’s easy to select a trusted provider. Here are some tips:

  • Look for ratings on the company’s website — Look for ratings such as A+ on a company’s website, or access their financial rating on sites such as A.M. Best, Moody’s, or Standard and Poors.
  • See if they’re accredited by the Better Business Bureau — BBB accreditation is a real plus, and companies who have it will flaunt it.
  • Look for the word “Insurance” — Travel “protection,” “assurance,” or simply “travel policy” don’t mean the same thing. If the company is not an insurance company, it may not be regulated — and you may not be protected if the company dissolves or decides not to pay your legitimate claim.

Hot Tip: Due to “free look period” regulations that apply to insurance companies, you’ll also have the opportunity to review your policy and reject it if you are not satisfied.

Purchase Your Policy Early

In most cases you can purchase travel insurance up until the day of your departure. However, there are benefits to purchasing a policy earlier:

  • Protection if you get sick and cannot go on your prepaid trip
  • Travel planning and concierge services
  • Coverage for weather cancellations (such as for hurricanes)
  • Default of the travel company

The best plan of action is to purchase your travel insurance as soon as you’ve made your first trip deposit .

Bottom Line: Buy from a regulated insurance company that has a high financial rating and BBB accreditation. Additionally, purchase your policy at least 21 days in advance of your trip to take advantage of pre-departure coverages and benefits.

Air land sea activities

Obtain a family travel insurance quote from most companies, and you’ll be charged for each child added to the policy.

Travelex does things a bit differently and covers children under the age of 18 on the parent’s policy at no additional charge.

As an example, their Travel Select policy for a family of 4 (ages 35, 36, 8, and 10) on a 2-week trip that costs $4,600 quoted a premium of $242.

Primary Coverage includes:

  • Trip cancellation 100% of trip cost
  • Trip interruption 150% of trip cost
  • Trip delay $750 ($250/day)
  • Equipment delay $200
  • Missed connection $750
  • Baggage & personal effects $1,000
  • Baggage delay $200
  • Emergency medical & dental expenses $50,000
  • Emergency evacuation & repatriation $500,000
  • Accidental death & dismemberment $25,000
  • Travel assistance & concierge services

There are plenty of upgrade options available, such as cancel-for-any-reason coverage and additional medical coverage.

Travelex is also backed by A++ rated Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company and accredited by the Better Business Bureau.

Be sure to compare rates between companies to find the best value for the coverage most important to you.

Bottom Line: For family coverage all on 1 policy, comprehensive protection, and good value, Travelex is a solid choice.

Allianz Annual Plan

World Nomads

World Nomads offers comprehensive travel insurance plans that cover a huge variety of over 200 activities — even dangerous ones!

But you don’t have to be a risk-taker to benefit from World Nomads travel insurance .

Any traveler can benefit from their policies, which offer a combination of the coverages travelers need most.

Highlights of World Nomads Travel Insurance

Let’s take a look at a sampling of their travel insurance policies to get an idea of the coverage and cost.

World Nomads offers Standard Plans and more comprehensive Explorer Plans.

This particular policy is an Explorer Plan for a 40-year-old traveling for 6 months to 5 countries. The premium cost came to $814. (The Standard Plan with lower coverage limits was $567.)

World Nomads plan

Let’s take a look at a shorter term policy for a 35-year-old traveling to 5 countries over a 1-month period. The cost for this policy is $133 for the Standard  Plan and $236 for the Explorer Plan.

World Nomads Medical

Your World Nomads travel insurance policy covers you once you’re more than 100 miles from home , so their policies are great for domestic travel too.

Travelex family

If you’re taking 3 or more trips a year, an annual travel insurance policy could save you money.

An annual policy also has the added benefit of insuring trips you haven’t even booked yet!

Consider including travel insurance provider Allianz when comparing policies if you’re looking for coverage for multiple trips during a 12-month period.

Allianz was voted best travel insurance provider by Travel Weekly for 2018 , but that’s just one of the 12+ awards this company won during the year.

After reviewing several companies and policies, I purchased my annual travel insurance policy from Allianz because it was the right mix of price and coverage for my travel schedule.

In addition to the coverage listed in the above example, these annual plans include baggage loss/damage, travel delay , and car rental coverage.

Allianz Coverage

To determine if an annual travel policy is better for you, simply price each planned trip separately and compare the cost and coverage to the annual policy .

Allianz also offers affordable travel insurance plans for families.

Hot Tip: An annual travel insurance policy with Allianz has the added benefit of covering trips you haven’t yet booked! Any trips 45 days or less in length are covered.

Geoblue Trekker Policy

If you have current medical insurance that will not cover you while traveling, the type of medical travel insurance policy you purchase will be different than if you do not have current medical insurance.

Fortunately, medical travel insurance coverage is available in either scenario.

If you have current medical insurance , you can affordably supplement it with a GeoBlue medical travel insurance plan and have coverage worldwide.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

For those who don’t have current medical insurance , one option is to purchase a comprehensive plan that includes medical, such as Exact Care Plus policies with Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection.

This example is for an annual comprehensive travel insurance policy for a 35-year-old (costing $292).

In addition to primary medical insurance of $50,000 and evacuation/repatriation insurance of $500,000, you’ll receive these coverages:

  • Trip cancellation – 100% of trip cost
  • Trip interruption – 150% of trip cost
  • Trip delay – $1000
  • Missed connection – $100
  • Tarmac delay – $1,000
  • Flight departure delay – $50
  • Lost baggage – $500
  • Delayed baggage – $150

Terms and conditions apply, and the price will vary depending on the cost of the trip, destinations, age of traveler, and coverage selected.

Hot Tip: You may be able to secure an annual comprehensive travel insurance plan that includes primary medical coverage for not much more than just an annual medical travel insurance plan.

According to Medjet, over 2 million travelers each year need medical evacuation. Unfortunately, emergency medical evacuations can run between $30,000 and $150,000!

Backed by Lloyd’s of London, A + rated, and BBB accredited, Medjet is the premier provider of emergency evacuation services.

Medjet is not insurance — it is a membership that assures you’ll have medical transport when you need it, even in remote areas.

Short term membership starts at $99, while annual membership is $295.

Coverage includes worldwide medical transport and associated services.

Additional coverage is available for terrorism evacuation, kidnap for ransom, disappearance, wrongful detention, and blackmail/extortion.

Are you current or former military, a senior traveler, disabled, or simply want to make sure you have insurance when traveling with your pet?

Fortunately, specialty travel insurance is widely available to everyone.

Military and Military Families

Military members have unique circumstances when it comes to travel insurance, such as redeployment and other situations specific to military service.

USAA members receive extra protection and exclusive rates on travel insurance policies. Current military, their families, and former military can qualify.

Additionally, children are included on most plans for no extra charge .

Here’s what these plans generally include:

  • Lost or delayed baggage
  • Trip cancellation or interruption
  • Trip interruption/cancellation even due to illness
  • Medical coverage
  • Weather interruptions to your trip
  • Emergency evacuation and assistance

Need a good credit card? Check out our list of the best credit cards for military .

  • World Nomad  partner  TripAssure  offers travel insurance for those 70 years old and above.
  • GeoBlue issues medical insurance travel plans up to age 84.
  • Allianz and Berkshire Hathaway offer policies up to 99 years of age!

Travelers With Disabilities

  • Allianz Global Assistance (recommended by Wheelchair Travel.org) offers policies for those with disabilities or special needs at standard prices.

Travelers With Pets

  • Travelex’s Travel Max Policy  – $1000 for emergency pet medical treatment. If you are unable to take care of your pet due to hospitalization while traveling, there is coverage of up to $10,000 to transport your pet back home.

If you want to compare travel insurance companies and individual policies, a comparison tool can do just that.

Here are 4 of the most popular comparison sites, all of which offer dozens of policies from scores of travel insurance companies:

  • Squaremouth
  • InsureMyTrip
  • Travel Insurance.com

Comparison sites do not list every travel insurance company , but they can help narrow your choices and get an idea of pricing and coverage.

Note that some sites are limited to single-trip policy searches and don’t allow you to search for annual travel insurance policies.

Booking Trips with a Travel Rewards Credit Card

You may currently have some form of travel insurance and not realize it, so check for current coverage if you have any of these resources.

Credit Cards with Insurance

Credit cards can provide a multitude of travel benefits. One of the best credit cards for travel benefits include the Chase Sapphire Preferred :

  • Domestic and worldwide car rental insurance
  • Trip delay , cancellation , and interruption protection
  • Lost/delayed baggage protection
  • Roadside assistance
  • Travel and emergency assistance
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Cell phone protection

It’s worth noting that to receive credit card travel benefits, you must pay for your trip with your qualifying credit card .

Some credit cards grant coverage when paying partially, but some require the entire purchase be paid with the card (or rewards points from the card).

Hot Tip: To find out which credit cards offer protection , we put together a comprehensive overview of credit cards and the associated travel benefits.

Employer-Sponsored Health Plans

While many health insurance plans limit coverage outside of the United States, you may find travel coverage within your plan that can be quite significant.

For example,  Unum  is one of the most common group insurance companies offering employers travel insurance for their employees through  Assist America .

You may find these types of protection included:

  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Prescription replacement assistance
  • Transportation for a friend or family member to join a hospitalized patient
  • Care and transport of unattended minor children
  • Hospital and English-speaking medical provider referrals
  • Legal and interpreter referrals
  • Passport replacement assistance

Bottom Line: It’s important to know if your current health insurance plan will cover you when traveling. You may find unexpected coverage or some gaps in coverage, and be able to supplement your plan with a travel insurance policy prior to your trip.

Club Memberships

Certain club memberships offer benefits that can include various levels of travel insurance coverage:

  • Divers Alert Network — Emergency evacuation insurance, even when traveling for non-diving activities
  • Family Motor Coach Association — Discounted worldwide travel assistance
  • Gold Wing Road Riders Association — Free emergency towing and roadside assistance for motorcycles
  • American Motorcycle Association — Emergency towing and roadside assistance coverage for motorcycles, cars, trucks, trailers, and RVs
  • American Alpine Club — Search and rescue for any land-based activity worldwide up to $7,500

Hot Tip: Divers Alert Network provides up to $100,000 in emergency evacuation insurance for members, even during non-diving activities. The cost to be a member is only $35 annually.

Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement Plans

Only in rare circumstances does Medicare extend coverage outside of the U.S.

Supplemental plans you purchase over and above your plan A and B Medicare, however, can pay 80% of medical emergency care outside the U.S. after a $250 deductible.

Coverage is valid for the first 60 days you’re traveling and has a $50,000 lifetime cap.

BOTTOM LINE: Benefits offered with credit cards, club memberships, employer-sponsored health plans, and Medicare do not match the protection you’ll receive with a comprehensive travel insurance policy. However, knowing what you have currently can help you avoid paying for duplicate coverage.

Insurance serves the purpose of protecting us from great financial loss. For this reason, it is wise to purchase travel insurance for any trip that includes the potential to lose money if things go wrong.

Travel insurance also delivers peace of mind. Even if we never use the insurance, it is one less worry knowing we’ll be compensated if an incident occurs.

Fortunately, travel insurance is broadly available and also affordable. And there are so many choices!

Be sure to purchase your travel insurance policy from an actual regulated insurance company for an extra level of protection.

Our selections in this article were limited to strong financially rated companies, those that provided ease in getting a quote, and those that offered an understandable overview of coverages.
