The Mahindra XUV500 has taken the SUV market by storm, but can the Tata Safari Storme knock some wind out of the SUV? We compare the newly launched Tata Safari Storme with Mahindra’s blockbuster, the XUV500.

The Tata Safari Storme is based on the same old body shell of the old Safari (a 1998 design), but has been given suitable cosmetic touches to make it more modern. However, the chassis is all-new, having been borrowed from the Tata Aria, along with some componentry which has improved ride and handling considerably. Also see: Tata Safari Storme launched!

So how do the two compare? Here’s a comparison.

Looks, fit and finish: Each has its own appeal

Tata Safari Storme vs Mahindra XUV500: Comparison

The Mahindra XUV500 is an all-new SUV, designed from scratch and incorporating more modern design cues. It is a monocoque SUV (without a rigid ladder-frame chassis) and is considerably lighter. The Tata Safari Storme uses a body-on-frame traditional ladder frame chassis with body bolted on. Even though it has a new chassis design from the Aria, it is still quite heavy. In terms of looks, the XUV500 is well finished, but rather overdone on the design front. Also see: Mahindra XUV500 road test

In terms of fit and finish, both are equally good, not the best, but good. Plastic quality on some parts of the XUV500 is not that great, while the Storme has consistently better plastic quality now, compared to the earlier Safari.

In terms of fit and finish, both the XUV500 and Storme are comparable, with the Storme probably sneaking ahead a bit.

Comfort and features: XUV500 is hard to beat

Tata Safari Storme vs Mahindra XUV500: Comparison

The Storme and XUV500 are both spacious vehicles. The Storme probably even more so. But when it comes to features, there’s no beating the XUV500. The vehicle is simply loaded and outclasses all other SUVs in and above its price range. Six airbags, GPS navigation, ABS, electronic stability program, hill descent control, cruise control, Bluetooth, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, start-stop micro hybrid system, cornering lamps, tilt and telescopic steering, and more.

The Storme has just the essentials – two airbags, all-round disc brakes, ABS, single DIN music system, power fold mirrors etc, but not as much as the XUV500 offers. In terms of comfort, the XUV500’s monocoque chassis offers slightly better ride quality than the Storme. The third row in the Storme are side facing jump seats that are uncomfortable, while the XUV has a forward facing row, although not very spacious, it is better. Engine and performance: Storme rides the rough better

The Tata Safari Storme is powered by a 2.2 litre “VarioCor” common-rail diesel engine that puts out 140 bhp of power at 4000 rpm and 320 Nm of torque at 1700 rpm. It is mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The Storme is quite refined and NVH levels are well contained. The Safari has improved in ride and handling as well, with lesser body roll thanks to the Aria’s chassis being used. However, it is a heavy vehicle at 1970 Kg and loses out in the power-to-weight stakes. The Safari is primarily a rear-wheel drive vehicle and also has a 4×4 variant.

The XUV500 is primarily a front-wheel drive vehicle and it also has an all-wheel drive variant. It is powered by a 2.2 litre common rail diesel engine quite similar to the Safari’s producing 140 bhp of power and 330 Nm of torque. It comes with a six-speed manual transmission. The XUV500 is also significantly lighter than the Safari Storme and has a better power-to-weight ratio.

In terms of on-road performance the XUV500 is better, but if you take off-road capability into account, the Safari Storme is more rugged and better equipped for off-road use.

Price, mileage and value for money: Storme cheaper but XUV500 more VFM

The Mahindra XUV500 is priced between Rs. 11.6 lakh and Rs. 13.9 lakh for three variants. The Safari Storme is priced between Rs. 9.95 lakh and Rs. 13.6 lakh for four variants. In terms of initial purchase price, the Storme is cheaper, but when you look at the features and equipment that the XUV500 offers, it is excellent value for money.

The XUV500 is also more fuel efficient with a claimed mileage of 15.1 kmpl. In real world conditions too it does give about as much mileage on the highway, and about 13 kmpl in the city. The Safari Storme on the other hand has a claimed mileage of 13.2 kmpl and gives about 11-12 kmpl in real world conditions. Also see: Safari Storme vs. Renault Duster

In terms of fuel economy and value for money, the XUV500 is better than the Storme.

Verdict: XUV500 remains the SUV to beat

If you compare the Tata Safari Storme with the XUV500, the XUV500 wins on the value for money, comfort and features and fuel economy front. It is a good vehicle to travel long distances in. However, when it comes to rugged use off-road and consistency of fit and finish, the Storme is a good choice. It is a lot simpler in terms of technology than the XUV500, which would also mean better reliability. If you want out and out value for money, pick the XUV500, but if you want a rugged vehicle for some off-road use as well, pick the Storme.

Tata Safari Storme Vs Mahindra XUV500 – Which Is A Better SUV?

author image

Tata is in the SUV arena with the thoroughly updated Tata Safari Storme and the initial reviews are decent enough. Despite being a good car, it wouldn’t be easy for the car to generate appreciable amount of revenues as there are already a couple of value for money cars in the market. In our last post, we compared the Storme with the Scorpio and now its time to compare it with a tougher contender, the XUV500. Here is a detailed comparison of 2012 Tata Safari Storme VS Mahindra XUV500 .

tata safari storme vs mahindra XUV5OO

The Storme has been given a thorough update on the front and rear. Some of the highlights include an all new grille, new headlamps, new bumpers,  new tail lamps, etc. However, the side profile majorly remains the same. All in all Tata has made a good effort but compared to the XUV500, it looks less appealing.

The XUV500 has a relatively aggressive styling. The headlamps, wheel arches, stance, and everything looks so bold. Moreover it has that feel of a premium SUV which the Storme certainly lacks.

Tata Safari Storme Dimensions

  • Length: 4655 mm
  • Height: 1922 mm
  • Width: 1965 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2650 mm

Mahindra XUV500 Dimensions

  • Length = 4585 mm
  • Width = 1890 mm
  • Height = 1785 mm
  • Wheelbase = 2700 mm

Proportion wise the Storme definitely is bigger and that too by a significant margin. It is taller, wider as well as longer but in spite of that the wheelbase of Storme is 50 mm shorter than the wheelbase of XUV500.

Tata Safari Storme Interiors

The interior styling of the Safari Storme is has also been updated and it now feels so very modern and pleasant. The list of feature on the Storme includes Electrically adjustable ORVMs, Ventilated Disk brakes on all wheels , ABS and EBD , Improved steering system , Better frame construction crumple zones for crash protection, Side intrusion beams on all doors , Collapsible steering column , Dual airbags, Inertial switch and engine immobilizer, Keyless entry and power folding outside rear view mirrors, Chrome outside door handles, Best in class space, Wooden panels on interiors, Rear AC Vents, Chrome inside door handles, Dual Exhaust for sporty look, Rear parking assist with display on the inside rear view mirror etc.

Image – Mahindra XUV interiors

Honda Brio Interiors

The XUV was launched last year but it still feels new. The styling is definitely better than other Mahindra products but when compared to the Storme, it seems at par. Both the cars’ interiors will impress you in their own way. Coming to the features now, it comes with leather upholstery, two tone colour theme on the dashboard and door trims, Laptop storage compartment in the glove box, conversation mirror and sunglass holder, voice command activated control, a 6 inch touchscreen infotainment system with GPS navigation and iPod connectivity, 6 airbags, steering mounted buttons for audio control and Cruise Control, ABS with EBD, ESP with rollover mitigation, Hill Hold and Hill Descent control, foldable 2nd and 3rd row seats, premium leather upholstery, tilt and telescopic steering column etc.

2012 Tata Safari Storme Engine Specifications

  • 2.2 Litre 16 valve CRDI Diesel engine
  • Peak power of 138 BHP @ 4000 RPM
  • Peak torque of 320 Nm @ 1700-2700 RPM
  • The engine has a variable geometry turbocharger for better performance
  • 5 speed manual transmission system with a 4X4 all wheel drive system which can be electronically be shifted on-the-fly even while the SUV is moving
  • ARAI certified mileage of 14 KMPL (2WD) and 13.2 KMPL (4WD)

Mahindra XUV Diesel Engine Specifications

  • 2.2 Litre mHawk Diesel Engine
  • Transverse CRDI Diesel Engine
  • Variable Geometry Turbocharger
  • Max power of 140 BHP @ 3750 RPM
  • Max Torque of 330 Nm @ 1600 to 2800 RPM
  • 6 Speed Synchromesh Cable Shift manual transmission
  • 4 Wheel Drive and 2 Wheel Drive Options
  • ARAI Certified mileage of 15.1 KMPL

Both the cars equip a 2.2 litre diesel engine but there is a slight difference between the power and torque figures of the two, with the XUV being ahead. Mileage wise again the XUV is better but there is a mere difference of 1 to 2 KMPL. What is interesting here is the On-the-Fly switchable all wheel drive system which is exclusive to Storme.

Performance & Handling

Now coming to the performance, the Storme arrives with improved handling and more power but it still is somewhat lagging. The XUV rides really well and is a feels more confident.

Price And Value For Money

Tata Safari Storme is priced between Rs. 9.95 lakhs and Rs.13.66 lakhs. The XUV is priced between Rs. 11.70 lakhs and Rs. 14.27 lakhs. Pricing wise it is quite evident that the Storme will target those buyers as well who do not want to spend more than Rs. 10 lakh on a full fledged SUV, while on the other hand the XUV base starts at 11.70 lakh INR.

Verdict– Tata Safari Storme Vs Mahindra XUV500

The Safari Storme is available at a relatively less price and has a good set of features. The XUV is a bit pricier but at the same time comes with a handful of exclusive features for the passenger cabin. Performance wise both the cars will be at par but I really feel the on-the-fly switchable all wheel drive system present in the Storme will be the highlight as it will let you switch to two wheel drive on the go and thus save fuel. So both have their strong and weak points.

Before you make your final booking  for any of the two, I would suggest you to test drive both the vehicles.

2021 Tata Safari Vs Tata Safari Storme – Detailed Specs Comparison

2021 tata safari vs safari strome-1

The 2021 Tata Safari will directly put up against the MG Hector Plus, upcoming next-gen Mahindra XUV500 and the Hyundai Alcazar (three-row Creta)

Once the BS6 emission norms became mandatory in April last year, Tata Motors discontinued the Safari Storme. However, after almost a year, the carmaker went on to confirm that it is all set to revive the brand, albeit in an all-new avatar. The three-row Gravitas that was first showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo, was renamed ‘Safari’, and launched in the Indian market on February 22, 2021.

Here is a detailed specifications comparison between the previous-gen Tata Safari and the 2021 Safari, take a read –

In its entirety, the Tata Safari continued to exist in its first-gen avatar, which means that the Safari Storme featured the overall same design language as the original Tata Safari launched in 1998. That being said, the Safari was loved by enthusiasts for its bold, and rugged no-nonsense design that really didn’t have to do too much to make its presence felt.

However, Tata has certainly moved on from that, and the new Safari is much more modern over the previous model. The car has been designed under Tata’s Impact 2.0 styling language and looks way more premium than the first-gen model, thanks to its chrome radiator grille, diamond-cut alloy wheels, split headlamps with LED DRLs, stylish roof rails and more.

2021 tata safari vs safari strome-3

In terms of size, the 2021 Safari measures 4,661 mm in length, 1,894 mm in width, 1,786 mm in height and has a 2,741 mm long wheelbase. In contrast, the Safari Storme had a length of 4,655 mm, a width of 1,855 mm, stood 1,922 mm tall and had a 2,650 mm long wheelbase.

This means that the New Safari has grown in terms of each of the aspects mentioned above, apart from the height. The new Safari is 6 mm longer, 39 mm wider and has a 100 mm longer wheelbase over the previous-gen model. However, the Safari Storme was a whole 136 mm taller than the new model.

The Safari Storme made use of a body-on-frame platform that also underpinned a few other Tata cars like the Aria and Hexa. While the platform was rugged, the ride and handling weren’t as good as the majority of people would like. On the other hand, the new Safari is underpinned by Land Rover’s D8-derived monocoque architecture called ‘Omega Arc’. The ride will likely be much more calmer, and handling is also expected to be drastically improved over the predecessor.

2021 tata safari vs safari strome-2

The Safari Storme was offered with Tata’s 2.2-litre four-cylinder Varicor 400 diesel engine that produced 156 PS of max power and 400 Nm of peak torque. On the lower trims, however, was a detuned version of this engine, rated at 150 PS/320 Nm.

The 2021 Tata Safari draws power from the Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine that also performs duties on the Harrier. The Kryotec engine puts out 170 PS of power and 350 Nm torque, which is 14 PS more but 50 Nm less than the previous-gen Safari. However, it should be noted that the new Safari is lighter than the previous model. The transmission options include a 6-speed MT and an optional 6-speed AT.

It should be noted that the older Safari was known for its off-roading capabilities, and came with an optional four-wheel drivetrain. However, the new one, which is being offered with a front-wheel configuration as standard, will be best suited for mild off-roading only.

Tata safari

While the older Safari Storme looked outdated as compared to the modern SUVs available for its price, the new-gen model borrows its dashboard as well as equipment list from the Harrier. The cabin features a dual-tone layout, and the overall quality is a big step up from the previous-gen model.

That being said, the side-facing seats in the third row of the Safari Storme have been replaced with forward-facing seats. The 2021 Safari can be had with either a 6-seat or a 7-seat configuration.

2015 Tata Safari Storme Interior

Features & Safety

The Safari Storme was pretty barebones as far as features are concerned, but the new-gen model is packed up to the brim with features. It will be offered with an 8.8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected car-tech, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, a premium audio system from JBL, cruise control, a 7-inch display for the instrument cluster, an auto-dimming IRVM, an electronic parking brake, a panoramic sunroof and much more.

The 2021 Safari’s safety suite will consist of an electronic parking brake with auto hold, ESP-based off-road modes, hill hold control and hill hold descent, ABS with EBD, 6 airbags, traction control, corner stability control, electronic stability program, rollover mitigation, rear parking sensors, reverse parking camera etc.

2021 Tata Safari Adventure interior

The BS4 Safari Storme was retailed at a starting price of Rs 11.09 lakh for the entry-level trim, going all the way up to Rs 16.44 lakh for the top-end trim. On the other hand, the 2021 Tata Safari is currently priced from Rs 14.69 lakh to Rs 21.45 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom New Delhi).

Comparison Verdict

The 2021 Tata Safari costs a lot more than the first-gen Safari, while it also loses out on the much-loved 4×4 drivetrain. So does the new-gen version of the SUV make any sense? Well, the new Safari feels much more premium, gets a whole lot of new features and safety tech, and is also much more sophisticated as compared to the previous-gen version; all of which justifies the premium you pay over the now-discontinued Safari Storme’s price.

Confused: Tata Safari Storme vs Mahindra Scorpio vs Mahindra XUV500

  • Thread Starter Sudarshan-Sanz

Sudarshan-Sanz

Hi, I'm a new member in TAI. I already own a Hyundai Eon Magna+.And now im looking for a SUV. The options are-: 1. Safari Storme VX 2. XUV 500 W6 3. Scorpio S10. Please suggest me which one. Till Then.

vikyjoshi

well, each vehicle has its own pluses and minuses. 1. Storme: Absolute king of road, great road presence, highway manners, beast of an engine, fantastic vehicle. Ladder on frame body. 2. XUV 500: Features loaded vehicle will all the gizmos you will need. good highway manners. Monocoque body 3. Scorpio: it is a rugged suv, but still in my opinion not in the ranks of Storme. My Choice would be storme. Why people may choose XUV? lots of gizmos tyre tronics, cornering headlamps, front facing 3rd row seats, touch screen etc. Why I like Storme? Powerful engine, now the engine is all the more powerful, with 6 speed gear which was missing in older generation of storme. Fantastic JBL ICE, fantastic road presence and a very comfortable vehicle. Though it does not have a touch screen, i would prefer the buttons since I dont want to be distracted while driving and seeing where am I touching on the touch screen. great ground clearence and broad tires which can take any thing on the road with ease. I can add to confusion, try the hexa it is combination of all the beauties of storme and xuv (lots of features, drive modes, front facing comfortable 3rd row seats, automatic option avaiable) Plus being the first of buyers can expect a fantastic initial launch pricing.

bhvm

Honoured Member

Agreed, Do wait for Hexa. TD all the said vehicle with heart and see what ticks you.

Atulamigo

Wait for Mahindra TUV500 too, that will give more options in your search category. Cheers Atul

I might consider Hexa. I'm not sure about Tata's Service.

kasscon

I'm actually not sure about the Hexa's pricing. It's gonna be a tough competition between Safari Storme or XUV 500.

Sudarshan-Sanz said: I'm actually not sure about the Hexa's pricing. It's gonna be a tough competition between Safari Storme or XUV 500. Click to expand... To me the hexa will be priced in the similar range of Storme and XUV. There is a high probability that Hexa may cannabilise the storme atleast with initial pricing . This is what I have a hunch. Sudarshan-Sanz said: I'm not sure about Tata's Service. Click to expand... Well i would say right now is the time where you can get bang for the buck on tata service front as well. I have had good expericne with tata service for the past year I cannot say best but certainly it was good. AMC also save a lot of money. They are ethical in the way warranty and free replacement were honoured without any fuss With maruti i have faced that what ever parts was gone it was never under warranty be it brake liner, or clutch or auto lock. tatas are ethical atleast. So you should have no problem with either the storme or hexa service in tata. be sure you get the max amc and warranty

Mind says XUV Heart says Safari. Not sure who should i listen to.

singh890

Most probably i will zero in on a XUV W6

The other option i added in the list is Honda BRV. How is Honda BRV.

BRV is not particularly exciting and the quality is not what you'd expect from honda. Cost cutting is evident.

Surfer

Sudarshan-Sanz said: Most probably i will zero in on a XUV W6 Click to expand... Better to go for W8 (feature packed variant) rather than W6. If your budget permits, why not top-end variant With XVU you have lots of options to choose whoever with Safari Storme it is just nothing.
