Important Information

  • Physical Expectations
  • Health & Safety Considerations
  • Pre-departure & Arrival Info

TCU encourages all students, including students with disabilities, to actively participate in the Study Abroad programs offered by the University. In partnership with TCU Global, TCU Student Access & Accommodation helps to ensure the best possible study abroad experience for students with registered disabilities by providing reasonable and necessary accommodations during their time abroad.

Study Abroad programs include field components that require the ability to perform tasks beyond what is required in a typical classroom. Among other things, many programs require extensive walking and/or the ability to stand for extended periods of time; the ability to independently use public transportation; and/or sleeping in shared quarters. Program activities may take place in extreme temperatures (including excessive heat or cold). Housing facilities may lack central heat and air-conditioning, elevators, and other conveniences. In all cases, students should expect to transport and manage their own luggage through airports and public transportation centers. Prior to applying to specific Study Abroad programs, students should review the physical requirements for each program to ascertain whether they will be able to participate in all activities of the program. Students needing accommodations should follow the process outlined by Student Access & Accommodation.

Students requiring an accommodation to meet these or other program essential eligibility requirements must request any accommodation through TCU Student Access and Accommodation well in advance (suggest a minimum of 3 months) of the program departure  following university procedures .  TCU Student Access and Accommodation, located in The Harrison, Suite 1200, strongly recommends that students notify both Student Access and Accommodation as well as TCU Global early on to initiate the process of securing reasonable accommodations.  If TCU determines that you do not, with reasonable accommodations approved through TCU Student Access and Accommodation, meet the essential eligibility requirements of the program, then you may not participate in the program. Each student’s request for accommodation will be looked at on an individualized, case by case basis, taking into consideration student documentation and the essential eligibility requirements of the program.

Managing your health and safety is an important component in having a positive experience abroad. TCU provides you with a number of resources to assist you:

  • Prior to departure, you will need to attend the mandatory orientation which covers specific health, safety, logistical, and cultural information.
  • Upon arrival, you will have an orientation to reiterate health, safety, logistical, and cultural information.
  • TCU provides you membership to On Call International, a premier Global Assistance program. You can call On Call for any kind of travel, health, safety, or emergency issues, including:
  • help replacing a lost passpor help translating and interpreting
  • help with lost luggage, along with reimbursement for items needed while luggage is lost
  • assistance finding general and specialty health care
  • assistance with emergency refills of prescription
  • health insurance for your time abroad.

For more information, please see Health & Safety

Greek Visas

Greece requires a visa for all TCU-In Athens semester-long or year-long students. After admission to this program, the staff at ACG will assist you in applying for a visa.

Do not plan to travel outside the U.S. during the two months prior to your semester abroad because you must surrender your passport when you apply for a visa. Students should begin their visa process 10-12 weeks before their planned arrival.

You MUST have a round-trip ticket prior to departure for your program abroad.

Before Departure

You must attend the mandatory TCU-In Athens orientation. You should also review the TCU-In Athens Handbook and the  Know Before You Go  page.

Arrival and On-Site Information

Upon arrival, ACG will pick you up from the airport and take you to campus. You will then have a few days of mandatory on-site orientation before classes begin.

Because you are not enrolled in TCU classes, the TCU system will show 12 hours of coursework as a placeholder while you are abroad. Your classes will not transfer back to TCU until 8 – 10 weeks after the semester ends. At that time, the correct credit hours will be posted to your TCU record.

Take a walk through the most ancient Kremlin in Russia

The Novgorod Kremlin, which is also called ‘Detinets’, is located on the left bank of the Volkhov River. The first fortified settlement was set here during the reign of prince Vladimir Yaroslavich, the son of Yaroslav the Wise. During these times, all the state, public and religious life of Novgorod was concentrated here. It was the place where people kept chronicles and copied the texts of books. The Novgorod Kremlin, the most ancient one in Russia, was founded here in the 15th century.

St. Sophia Cathedral (11th century), The Millennium Of Russia Monument, Episcopal Chamber (15th century) and the main exhibition of The State Novgorod Museum-reservation located in a public office building of the 18th century are all situated in the Novgorod Kremlin. The exhibition will tell you about the whole Novgorod history from ancient times to the present day. There are also restoration workshops, a children’s center, a library and a philharmonic inside the Kremlin walls.

Send a letter with the State Novgorod Museum-reservation stamp

While visiting the main building of the Novgorod Kremlin museum, you’ll see a small bureau near the souvenir area. Two more bureaus like that can be found in the Fine Arts Museum and the Museum information centre. This is the Museum Post, the joint project of the State Novgorod Museum-reservation and Russian Post.

The tradition to exchange letters (at that time written on birch bark sheets) dates back to the 11th century so it’s hardly surprising that such a project appeared here. The bureaus are desks and mailboxes at the same time, so you can send your friends a postcard with a view of Novgorod right from the museum.

Find the famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin among the figures of The Millennium Of Russia Monument

In 1862, 1000 years after the Varangians were called to Russia, a monument dedicated to this event was launched in Novgorod. To tell the story of Russia’s one thousand years, the sculptor used 129 bronze figures: from state and military leaders to artists and poets.

One of figures portrays Afanasy Ordin-Nashchokin, a politician and reformer who was responsible for Russia’s diplomatic relations in the middle of the 17th century. He is believed to be the father of international and regular mail in Russia. He was also the person who came up with the idea of the first Russian Post official emblem — a post horn and a double-headed eagle.

Cross the Msta River over the first arch bridge in Russia

The steel bridge in Borovichi town that connects two banks of the Msta river was built at the beginning of the 20th century. The project of the bridge was created by Nikolay Belelyubsky, engineer and professor of St. Petersburg State Transport University. This is the first arch bridge in Russia.

In 1995, it was included in the national cultural heritage register. More than 100 bridges across Russia were developed by Belelyubsky, but only this one is named after him.

Cast a virtual bell

When in the Novgorod region, you’ll definitely hear bells ring and learn about the Novgorod Veche Bell. During the siege of the city, tsar Ivan III ordered to remove this bell from the bell tower and send it to Moscow. Legend says that the bell didn’t accept his fate, fell to the ground near the border of the Novgorod region and broke to pieces against the stones.

In the biggest Museum Bell Centre in Russia located in the Valday town, you can see bells from across the world and learn why Novgorod bells are unique. The museum’s collection represents bells from different countries and ages, some of them dating back to the 3rd century BC. You’ll learn about the history of casting and modern bell-making technologies and also play games on a touch table. For example, harness virtual ‘troika’ (three) horses with bells or cast a virtual bell.

Spot the pigeon on the cross of St. Sophia Cathedral

St. Sophia Cathedral was built in Novrogod between 1045 and 1050 by Kievan and Byzantine masters. It was conceived as the main cathedral of the city, and during its first years it was the only stone building in Novgorod. So where does the pigeon on the cross of the cathedral’s biggest dome come from?

Legend says that while tsar Ivan the Terrible and his Oprichniki were cruelly killing peaceful city folk in 1570, a pigeon suddenly sat down to the cross of the city’s main cathedral. It looked down, saw the massacre, and was literally petrified with horror. Since then the pigeon has been considered the defender of the city. People believe that as soon as the pigeon flies away from the cross, Novgorod will come to an end.

Visit a monastery, that was founded by Patriarch Nikon

The Valday Iver Monastery is situated on the island in the middle of the Valday lake. It is considered to be one of the most important and picturesque orthodox shrines.

The monastery was founded in 1653 by the initiative of Nikon who had just been elected Patriarch. Nikon wanted the monastery to look like the Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos, including the architectural style and monk’s clothes. Legend says that Nikon saw the spot for the monastery in a dream.

Check out Fyodor Dostoevsky’s country house

Fyodor Dostoevsky, a famous Russian writer, first visited Staraya Russa town in 1872 during a summer trip with his family. They liked it so much that the next year they rented a house near the Pererytitsa River’s embankment and spent every summer here ever since.

Dostoevsky loved this house, called it ‘his nest’ and considered it the perfect place to work and to be alone. In Staraya Russa he wrote his novels ‘The Adolescent’, ‘The Brothers Karamazov’ and ‘Demons’. Today, this place is a museum where you can explore what Dostoevsky’s house looked like and see his family’s personal belongings, photos and letters.

Learn what Brick Gothic looks like

The Episcopal Chamber of the Novgorod Kremlin is the only non-religious German Gothic building of the 15th century preserved in Russia. You can have a good look at the facets of the gothic cross-domed vaults inside the chamber. This is why this building is also called ‘Faceted Chamber’ or ‘Chamber of Facets’.

The chamber was part of Vladychny Dvor, the place where all important city events took place: court hearings, gatherings of the Council of Lords of the Novgorod Republic, ambassador’s receptions and feasts. The seals of the city’s lords were kept here. The decree of tsar Ivan III on merging the Novgorod Republic with the Moscow State was first announced in 1478 in Episcopal Chamber. This is when the name of the new state, Russia, was first pronounced.

See the murals by Theophanes the Greek

The Byzantine Empire had a huge impact on the development of the Russian culture. Many works of art and architecture in ancient Russia were created by Byzantine artists and masters. Theophanes the Greek was one of them. He was born in Byzantine and created icons and murals in Constantinople and Caffa (modern Feodosia). After that he moved to Novgorod where he was commissioned to paint the walls of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior on Ilyina Street. You can enjoy his unique and expressive style if you look at the murals inside the dome of the church and the Trinity side chapel.

The most recognizable and the only monumental work of Theophanes the Greek that is preserved today is the chest-high portrait of the Savior the Almighty in the dome of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior.

Take a photo with an ancient Novgorod citizen who is learning how to read and write

In 1951, a letter written on birch bark dating back to the 14–15th centuries was found in Veliky Novgorod. Many decades later, in 2019, a sculpture designed by Novgorod artist and sculptor Sergey Gaev appeared on this exact site.

The sculpture portrays an 8–year old boy sitting on a stool and holding a piece of birch bark. At this age children in Novgorod started to learn how to read and write. During archaeological excavations in Novgorod, scientists often found ancient handwriting practice books and children’s drawings on birch bark sheets.

Feel like an ancient viking or prince Rurik’s guest

Novgorod is one of the waypoints of the famous trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks. The route passed through the Volkhov river. In the 9–10th centuries there was a fortified settlement of the Viking Age here.

Some scientists believe that Novgorod is named after this area which was called ‘Stary Gorod’ (‘Old City’) at that time. Some historians and archeologists consider this place to be the residence of Prince Rurik who was asked to rule the city in 862. That’s why this ancient settlement is called ‘Rurikovo Gorodische’ (‘Ruruk’s Old City’).

Learn more about the Soviet modernist architecture

On the bank of the Volkhov river near the Novgorod Kremlin, there is an incredible building that looks like a spaceship and contrasts strongly with the ancient buildings of the city.

This is the Fyodor Dostoevsky Theater of Dramatic Art that was built in 1987. It is one of the most striking examples of the Soviet modernist architecture. The theater was built for 10 years according to the project of architect Vladimir Somov.

Buy a traditional embroidered tablecloth

A unique embroidery style that is now famous all over the world was born in the Staroye Rakhino village in the Novgorod province. By the middle of the 19th century, it had become a folk craft. Since then, linen tablecloths, towels and clothing items decorated with unusual ornaments have been popular not only among the locals, but also travellers.

In 1929, the first cooperative partnership of embroidery masters was created in Kresttsy. Later it turned into a factory that still operates today. The factory has a museum where embroidery traditions are preserved and new ornaments and technologies are created.

Find yourself in the Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages, Staraya Russa town could be called ‘the salt cellar of Russia’. That’s because salt making was the main trade here up to the 19th century. A few years ago, the old craft was brought back to life, and construction of salt works began. Later, an interactive museum was launched based on the results of archaeological findings.

This museum recreates a typical medieval manor of Staraya Russa of the 12th century with living rooms, a bathhouse, workshops, a livestock pen and traditional peasant household items. In this museum, you can also buy salt which is made in the same way as 1000 years ago.

See the place where Suvorov started his Italian campaign

Alexander Suvorov’s manor in the Konchanskoe village, which has now become the museum of the great commander, was originally the place of his exile. Suvovor openly disagreed with the reform of Russian’s army based on the Prussian model, and Emperor Paul the First didn’t appreciate such behaviour. He first fired Suvorov and then sent him away to his family estate.

However, the exile lasted for only two years. The great commander started the military campaign straight from his house in the Konchanskoe. During this legendary expedition, he crossed the Alps and defeated the French army.

Russian Post has launched a limited series of products dedicated to the cultural heritage of the Novgorod region.

In autumn 2020, Russian Post announced an open contest to create the design for its limited series dedicated to Novgorod region. The project was supported by the Government of the Novgorod region, ‘Russ Novgorodskaya’ (Novgorod Russia) project, the State Novgorod Museum-reservation and Yandex.

Stamps and envelopes are traditionally used to spread information about historic dates and figures and famous landmarks. Now we can also use parcel boxes, packaging tape and postcards. The limited series products will travel around the world, introducing the most popular Russian attractions to six million Russian Post clients daily.

The participants were to create the design for the limited series featuring three iconic attractions of the Novgorod region, the Novgorod Kremlin, the Millennium Of Russia Monument and the Belelyubsky Bridge in Borovichi. Moscow designers and graduates of the Higher School of Economics’ Art and Design School Alena Akmatova and Svetlana Ilyushina won the contest. Their project was chosen via an open vote and by the expert jury.

College football odds, lines, spreads: Picks, predictions, betting advice for Week 1, 2024 from proven model

The 2024 college football season began for a few FBS teams in Week 0, but every team in the top 25 will be in action during the Week 1 college football schedule. There are three ranked vs. ranked matchups on the schedule this week, including No. 1 Georgia vs. No. 14 Clemson on Saturday at noon ET. The Bulldogs are 13-point favorites in the Week 1 college football odds for that game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

No. 20 Texas A&M is a 3-point home favorite against No. 7 Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday night, while No. 13 LSU is -4.5 against No. 23 USC on Sunday night. The Week 1 schedule concludes when No. 10 Florida State tries to bounce back from its Week 0 loss to Georgia Tech when it hosts Boston College as a 17-point favorite on Monday.

Before making any college football picks for those games or others in Week 1, be sure to see what the SportsLine Projection Model has to say.

The model simulates every FBS college football game 10,000 times. Since its inception, it has  generated a profit of well over $2,000 for $100 players  on its top-rated college football picks against the spread. It is also coming off a profitable  13-9 season on top-rated spread picks . Anyone who has followed it has seen STRONG returns!

Now, it has studied the latest college football odds (see the  latest college football lines for each matchup this week on our college football odds page ), simulated every single play for every Week 1 game, and the results are in.

One of the college picks the model is high on during Week 1: No. 8 Penn State (-8.5) cruises to a blowout win over West Virginia at noon ET on Saturday. The Nittany Lions are coming off their second straight double-digit win season under head coach James Franklin, finishing third in the Big Ten behind Ohio State and Michigan last year. They return starting quarterback Drew Allar, who led an offense that ranked 12th in the country in points per game (36.2). He is expected to have a big game on Saturday, which is why Penn State is covering in well over 60% of simulations.

Another prediction: Western Kentucky (+31.5) stays within the spread at No. 5 Alabama in a 7 p.m. ET kickoff on Saturday. The Crimson Tide return starting quarterback Jalen Milroe, but they are working in new pieces at every other skill position offensively. Meanwhile, Western Kentucky has a dynamic offense that should create some problems for Alabama's rebuilding secondary, so the model has the Hilltoppers covering the spread well over 50% of the time.

The model has also made the call on who wins and covers in every other FBS matchup,  and it's calling for multiple underdogs to win outright!

So which college football teams should you back in Week 1, and which underdogs win outright? ... Join SportsLine now to see who wins and covers every single game, all from the model that has returned well over $2,000 in profit on top-rated ATS picks since its inception !

The college football season kicked off this weekend with a game between Florida State and Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland and that means that we are officially underway with a new era of football at Stanford and the challenge of playing in a brand new conference. With the first game of the Cardinal’s season against TCU just a few days away, the lines and spreads have been released with Stanford considered a home underdog to open the campaign.

Favored to lose by about nine points against TCU, the Cardinal were not given very high odds, with all five members of ESPN’s College GameDay crew choosing the Horned Frogs to head into Palo Alto and go home with the victory. The fan vote was shown on the show as well, with 85% of the fans also choosing TCU to win. The total for the matchups is listed at 61.5.

Stanford’s week one showdown with the Horned Frogs marks the fourth time that the programs have played each other, with the last time being the 2017 Alamo Bowl in which TCU pulled out a 39-37 victory. Prior to that game, the two teams met in back to back seasons back in 2007 and 2008 where TCU won a close battle in Palo Alto in ‘07 before taking home the 31-14 home victory in ‘08. Now, Stanford will look to turn the tables on its fortunes and claim its first ever win over TCU in order to start the year on the right foot.

A new era in the ACC commences, and while a non-conference foe will be coming to town, the Cardinal will go into the game with added motivation, looking to not only start the season off with a big win but also make a good first impression in representing the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Stephen Means (00:17.551)

Welcome back to Buckeye Talk. I’m Stephen Means. That’s Stephon Krashnik and that’s Andrew Gillis. The season’s here. We finally made it. Nine months of hypotheticals finally out the way. Welcome to a new era of Buckeye Talk. Welcome to a new era of college football. The 14 college football playoff era has officially closed. The old Big Ten is officially over with. Oregon and USC and Washington and UCLA joined the conference earlier this month in August. I think August 2nd was the official date that all those teams joined.

The big 10. We now live in a 12 team college football playoff world, but we’re still going to predict things like we usually do. Here’s what we’re going to do that because Ohio State plays a football game on Saturday. We’re going to pick the Ohio State’s regular season record. Do we think they’re going to defeat it? Do we think they’re have one loss, two loss, three losses? If you’re bold enough for more losses, do they win the Big Ten championship? What what ranking they’re going to have in the final college football playoff rankings, even if you think they’re going to not make the college football playoff, which would be insane.

would be a whole different conversation. Like if they don’t make the college football playoff, we’re to be having a very different conversation in December than if they just make it and lose and maybe the first or second or the quarterfinals or something like that. And then we’re not going to predict all 12 teams who make the playoff. That’s a long pod. And it’s requiring us to know a lot of information about teams that don’t necessarily matter to Ohio State right now. So what we’re going to do is kind of mix and match what we used to do where we would pick the 14 playoff and then pick the winners. Obviously, we’re going to pick

who we think get the top four seats and who get the buys. And then we’re also gonna predict who makes the final four, who makes the national championship game and ultimately who wins the national championship. Get the text 614 -350 -3315. We did have our textures involved in at least parts of this, not bits and parts, not all of it, but bits and parts of it. And it starts with the regular season, Stephon, Ohio State’s regular season, no big time non -conference opponent obviously, but it does feature.

Oregon, which is probably going to be a top three matchup. Penn state, which is a bare minimum will be a top 15 matchup. Iowa, who was also ranked right now in Michigan. And we’ll see if some other teams can pop into their first question off the board here. Here’s our presented to the Texans during the regular season, Ohio state will go dot dot dot. And the options were 12 and no 11 and one 10 and three, 10 and two and nine and three or worse. Where do you fall in that category?

Stefan Krajisnik (02:40.75)

Yeah, well, how you say going five and seven this season? I went with 11 and one and I teetered back and forth so much with 12 and it’s the Oregon game is obviously the one that I have them lose. Well, I guess I could have done the Penn State game, but I have them lose the Oregon game right now. I think I’m not I don’t know if there’s a spread out for that came out, but I think the ESPN like FBI or whatever it may be has Oregon as a very slight favorite. It’s probably going to be.

Stephen Means (02:43.117)

Andrew (03:08.251)

Yeah, the line is one. Oregon’s a one point favorite right now. So it’s basically a pick them. Yeah.

Stefan Krajisnik (03:11.5)

It’s going to be a talk. Yeah. My logic on that. And maybe I shouldn’t have even specified which game they were going to lose because I can give myself some leeway. I just think there’s going to be a game this year. And all of us have Will Howard as highs and finalists. He is still a transfer in his first year in a new system on a new team with new expectations. And I think there will be one game where maybe he’s not in his best form.

or maybe where he struggles a little bit. And maybe that’s at Penn State and not at Oregon. Maybe it’s home against Michigan, which that’s a whole nother conversation. But that Oregon team, think they’re improved defensively. It’s going to be a tough place to play. It seems like it’s going to be a night game. So I went with 11 and one.

Stephen Means (03:58.713)

So can I ask a question about part of the reason why you picked Oregon to win the regular season game is Will Howard, we think he’s going to be good, but he’s also a transfer quarterback. Why does that logic apply to Will Howard, but it doesn’t apply to Dylan Gabbard?

Stefan Krajisnik (04:11.544)

Well, it’s not that it doesn’t, mean, Dillon Gabriel might slip up, but Dillon Gabriel’s like home that game and Will Howard’s on the road.

Stephen Means (04:18.763)

Okay, I’m only at because it does seem like that’s a thing that’s happening a little bit maybe out of the Ohio a bubble Good

Stefan Krajisnik (04:23.522)

It is. is. think there’s this perception that Oregon did it with Bo Nix and Ohio State hasn’t done it with a transfer yet. I don’t know if that’s necessarily fair either because exactly. then there’s this, the element too of Bo Nix was a lot better in year two than he was in year one at Oregon. Like Dylan Gabriel is still in year one. I think that’s definitely fair. Really if the...

Stephen Means (04:34.388)

Justin Fields!

Stephen Means (04:45.827)

Yeah. Yeah.

Stefan Krajisnik (04:53.218)

I was probably going to pick the home team to win this game regardless. So that game being an Oregon and a Knight, went with Oregon. But it would not surprise me one bit if Ohio State won that game. mean, it’s a pick them for a reason.

Stephen Means (05:06.447)

I just, the world outside of Ohio State seems to be really down on Will Howard in terms of when you’re seeing some of these quarterback rankings. And I’m just not sure why that’s the case. I guess, you know, this is, get, McCord was still one of the 10 best quarterbacks in college football last year. I think that was fair. It’s just the standard is the standard that’s Ohio State and he didn’t necessarily meet that standard. Plus this is the new world of college football where everything’s in negotiation.

So when you put that into play though, still, benefit of the doubt, Ryan Day’s three quarterbacks before Kyle McCorbrough, Heisman Trophy finalist and first round draft picks, it’s interesting that there’s not a lot of benefit of the doubt that maybe Will Howard’s going to be good. And it’s almost like, Ohio State has to prove its quarterback is good, even though he’s a veteran and pretty much the same, he’s the same description as Dylan Gabriel. And he did it at a program that’s not a Blue Blood, won a Big 12 championship. And Dylan Gabriel,

He was good. He was good. just I see a lot of similarities there, but I understand what you’re saying is you’re picking the home team and a top three matchup. That’s probably the safest way to go with some things there. So you’re going 11 and one Andrew. What’s Ohio State’s regular season record?

Andrew (06:18.611)

12 and up. I understand the notion to pick them on the road or to not pick them on the road against Oregon. It’s not crazy. Oregon’s literally favored. Vegas is telling you that as of right now, we think that Oregon is probably the slight favorite in that game, right? But I think Ohio State has some of the ingredients that you would want.

to go into that stadium and win a football game that’s going to be very, very difficult because Oregon like that game is going to be two, three. Like unless Georgia loses, it’s going to be two, three. I mean, it like it might be one, two. It might be one, three. I mean, it might be a lot of different things as we get closer to it. That place is going to be charged up. It is going to be an awful place for Ohio State to try to play the football game. It’s going to be difficult.

I have a couple questions about that. Number one, I don’t think Ohio State fans taking not taking over that stadium, but I don’t think them showing up in mass. I don’t think that’s out of the question. So I question I was I’m thinking about that home field advantage going. Okay, what if there’s like 25 % Ohio State fans there? I don’t think it’s crazy. Number two, you’ve got a veteran quarterback who yes,

Stephen Means (07:30.425)

That’s not a

Andrew (07:47.995)

that game will be the biggest game that he will have played in to up to that point of his career. But he’s also seen big moments, right? He’s played in in conference championship game, big, maybe the biggest atmosphere he’s played in, I should say. But he’s played in conference championship games. He’s played in big time moments, played in a lot of different football games. That’s a guy you want there. Offensive line, same thing. Your center, you know, you worry about maybe like center quarterback stuff.

Shennard has played in the college football playoff and I know there were some snapping issues there, but he’s got that experience that you would want. Your offensive line is really veteran. Your defense is amazing. That’s going to travel out to Eugene. That I think matters. If, if this Oregon game was taking place at the beginning of the year and Ohio state had a new quarterback, I’d be with Stefan. I’d be picking Oregon in this game. You know, that’s just a really, really tough environment.

You know, I think Oregon 24 is better than like Notre Dame 23. And, know, that was a really tough environment still for Ohio State. So I just think the veteran aspect of what Ohio State is that matters. I think their defense being as good as it’s going to be. I think that matters. I just think they have maybe some of the antidote to counteract what’s going to be a really tough game in Eugene. So I think they’re going to win that one.

Penn State, I think you could just maybe make the same arguments for Oregon, except, hey, the game might be crazier and louder, but Penn State might be worse. So that probably cancels out. I don’t know if Michigan is going to be great. I think Michigan’s going to be solid at the very least. I don’t know if they’re going to be, you know, even really great or really good. I just think they might be solid. don’t, you know, that that looks to me.

Like an eight and four football team, like a nine and three football team, maybe. And that games at home for Ohio state. And I think they’re really going to pounce on them. So I think that this team, when you look at the potential pitfalls, they’ve got some of the makeup that you would want to avoid. Maybe a let down or a game where you go on the road and you know, it’s your biggest game of the year in the regular season up to that point and you lose it. I think that they can avoid that with, with just how this team is struck.

Stephen Means (10:11.407)

think it’s interesting for you, Andrew. This essentially came down to three games. Like you didn’t even consider the concept of what, yeah, you didn’t even consider it. It’s just like, okay, well, they’re gonna win nine games. So what about the other three games is what this came down for you. Stephon, before I go, I do wanna ask since you’re at 11 and one, were you closer to being 12 and 0 or closer to going 10 and two? you took away the option to go 11 and

Andrew (10:15.304)

a trap game or anything. Nope.

Stefan Krajisnik (10:35.48)

Definitely closer to go in 12 and really the Oregon game was the only one that I was a fion. I also kind of went with 11 one to give myself leeway if they beat Oregon, but they do slip up another game. just, I look at the landscape of college football, Oregon and Ohio state are the only two teams I think have a chance of going undefeated. It’s going to be whoever wins that game is going to have the chance to go undefeated in regular season. So I was, I was closer to 12 and and go, go and what you were talking about with, with some of those trap games like

If some of those trap games were on the road, maybe I’d feel a bit more iffy about it, like Nebraska and Iowa are their toughest opponents outside of those big three and you get both of them at home, right? Like you’re not like even Purdue that’s at home, right? Yeah, that’s a home game. like even, even like these tricky opponents that you kind of look at, like I just don’t see a world in which Michigan state or Northwestern gives them much of an issue. So your toughest trap games are at home, which doesn’t really concern me too much.

Andrew (11:35.825)

Yeah, like the Nebraska game coming out of a bye. They might be in for like a sleepy start out of that one. That’s you you play Oregon, you have a bye. Nebraska is going to come in fired up a little bit like Maryland did last year thinking like, we’re here. This is our moment to make a statement. You play Penn State the next week. I think that’s right. But yeah, you play it at home like Ohio State played Iowa the week after Oregon. Even at home, I’d be a little curious. But if they had to go to Kinnick or something right after Oregon, then I think we’d be having a different conversation.

but I just, think you’re right, Stefan. I look at this schedule and I’m like, okay, well the trap game would be like Iowa the week before Oregon and that’s at home. And then the week after the buy, after you play Oregon, that’s at home when you play Nebraska and then the Penn State game. All right, well you beat Penn State on the road, let’s say, and now you come home and you play a team that’s not very good. Like that’s, is that a trap game? Like, is that a team that can actually hurt you or is that a team?

Is that a game where you you bet the team against the spread more than you bet their money line if you get what I’m saying, right? Like do you bet the line rather than rather than Ohio State to lose? So yeah, I I think you’re right. I think the schedule kind of sets up a little bit nicely for them.

Stephen Means (12:53.423)

This is not an easy schedule, but it is an ideal schedule. I think that’s a better way to put it because your danger games are games where you’re gonna show up anyway because they’re the best teams in the country. Like you’re not gonna sleepwalk through Oregon, you’re gonna sleepwalk through Penn State.

Stephen Means (13:10.735)

45 % of our voters said 11 and one. Only 2 % said 10 and two and only 1 % said nine and three. 52 % said they were gonna go 12 and O. So this is, I think everybody’s thinking about this as who’s gonna win the Ohio State Oregon game a little bit. here’s, I went 12 and O as well. And the reason I went 12 and O was I looked at this schedule and I looked at the three danger games, right? Which are Michigan’s your rival who you haven’t beaten three years. And so that always comes with some.

emotional attachment to it of like, can you just like get over that, right? I also don’t think Michigan is going to be a good enough football team to beat Ohio State. Now I might feel differently about this when we get into October, depending on how some things play out. But right now it just doesn’t look, it looks like Michigan is going to be what Iowa’s had to be the last couple of years where it’s like, hey, your defense needs to score points because I’m not sure what your offense is going to be able to do. Penn State, I just don’t believe in James Franklin in big games.

I don’t believe in it. There was a stat somewhere where he was like what two and 14 or something like that against top 10. I just don’t believe in him when it comes to big games. I think James Franklin at Penn State, they’re good enough to be everybody they’re supposed to be. Once they play a team where things are equal, that’s when things fall apart for them. And then the Oregon game for me came down to.

You know what I didn’t realize? Austin Stadium is not that big. 54 ‚000 seeder. That’s not a crazy home field advantage. And so I was thinking about that, Andrew. Ohio State fans travel really well and can take over a stadium. I’m not saying they’re going to take over Eugene, Oregon, though I’m not saying they’re not. But 54 ‚000 for an Ohio State football team who’s used to playing in front of 103 ‚000.

and you go into Michigan and play over 100 ,000 and you gotta go into Penn State, this is not going to be the most intimidating home field advantage they’ve seen from a college football team, right? Even Notre Dame, I remember last year in Andrew, was like, I don’t really feel the juice. At least it was 77 ‚000 people, right? That’s the 54 ‚000 people in a college town in a football game on Saturday. I’m not sure how, and we’re gonna really get to see it because they have the.

Stephen Means (15:25.091)

The press box is outdoors, so we’re gonna be amongst people, which I always love those types of press boxes. I’m not sure that the, even if Will Howard was a second year college football player making his first start, I’m not sure the environment is so daunting that I’m like, okay, well, young quarterback on the road, top three matchup, night game potentially.

I don’t know this thing might go a little less. I don’t know if that’s on the table in this situation. I think you said Oregon was a one point favor right now, Andrew. It’s not going to be a blowout, but I do wonder if Ohio State comes out and throws a haymaker early and obviously Oregon makes his way back into the game. But like I’m wondering if Ohio State goes into their top three matchup and then they see it and they feel the environment and go, okay, we can handle this. This is pretty easy.

And so 12 and 0 for me came down to, that’s why I asked you guys that question. 12 and 0 for me came down to Oregon in the environment when it feels like the talent is equal. And I think Will Howard’s Heisman case might start on October.

Andrew (16:30.419)

So I actually, I do want to push back a little bit. I understand like when you walk into a stadium, like when you walk into the horseshoe and you see 105 ‚000 people, that’s intimidating. Like when you walk into Kyle Field and see 105 ‚000 people, that’s intimidating. When you walk, like when you walk into happy Valley and like all those places are intimidating. Austin’s a little unique. So I’m, I am not going to poo poo the noise aspect or the craziness aspect. Like

Stephen Means (16:40.75)

Stephen Means (16:57.999)

I’m gonna poopoo it. I’m gonna poopoo it. Have you been to Austin before? No, but like you’re you’re gonna describe it to me like you’ve actually seen it.

Andrew (16:59.525)

No, man, like this place, it’s it’s a little no. Have you? That’s what I’m saying,

I know, but I’ve seen pictures of it and I know people have talked about it. That stadium is right. Like the, the place that Ohio state will be playing it’s a, the stadium structure makes that place a little bit like this, like the Seahawks and the NFL where like noise collects on the field. It’s a vertical stadium. Like it bounced, like the noise bounces like

Stephen Means (17:14.836)

Pictures of the moon, but I still don’t know what the moon is.

Stephen Means (17:31.214)

Andrew (17:38.225)

There are people on record like Lee Corso was on record saying like this is the loudest place I’ve ever heard. I disagree with the notion that Austin Stadium is just like not intimidating or anything like that. yeah look I really I really want Stephen’s ears to be ringing at the end of the game just so that he could be like yeah this isn’t that big a deal. Yeah.

Stephen Means (17:50.095)

I’m gonna poop or Stefan, I’m gonna poop or I’m gonna poop or.

Andrew (18:00.433)

Like, no, no, it’s going to be very, very loud and it’s going to be very intimidating. The only thing I don’t think it’s like the, I say it’s going to walk in here and be like, this is, this is nothing. There’s half the people that are here for a home game. I don’t think they’re going to look at it like that. I think they might walk in there and it might be, one third of these people are wearing red. One third of these people is scarlet. know scarlet. One third of these people are not wearing green and one third of these people are not wearing yellow.

Stefan Krajisnik (18:03.842)

No one’s ever seen it.

Andrew (18:30.183)

Hmm. Interesting. That might be the thing that does it. I don’t like if Oregon has the percentage of fans that they wanted that game, it’s going to be very loud and it’s going to be silent count city for Ohio state. It’s going to be very, very tough to play. So yeah, I’m not going to poo poo. Outs to say to him, everybody talks about that place. Like it’s very tough to play and they do it on record and I’m going to believe them until I hear otherwise.

Stefan Krajisnik (18:55.502)

I’ve dealt with their stadium pulse on college football 25. It’s pretty tough.

Andrew (18:58.373)

Yeah, exactly.

Stephen Means (18:59.631)

I knew somebody was going to say that. I’m going to poopoo it. I’m going to continue to poopoo Okay. So we have 12 and 0, 12 and 0, and 11 and 1, which means we all have them in the Big Ten Championship game, I’m assuming. So I’ll go first this time and we’ll work our way the other way. I have all state over Oregon. That’s just what I have. Andrew, what do you have?

Stefan Krajisnik (19:01.144)

Andrew (19:23.187)

In the Big 10 championship game, I have rematch Ohio State playing Oregon. I have Ohio State winning that one too. I Ohio State going 13 and 0 through the season, getting to the playoff. Obviously, I mean, we’re going to talk about this in a minute. I’m not trying to spoil it, but you could use your context. Clues of Ohio State goes 13 and 0. They’re going to get a bye. They’re going to be one of the top four seeds. I think they’re going to beat. I know that was all I was going to say.

Stephen Means (19:24.739)

Stephen Means (19:46.295)

Right, right, right, right, right, right. Stop working ahead. Stop working ahead. Okay.

Andrew (19:50.771)

Like I was like, I think they’re going to go 13 and I think they’re going to beat Oregon twice. I think Oregon. Like the Oregon conversation is much more like. They’re getting close to that level. We talk about that with recruiting a lot. you know, I just don’t think they’re there yet. And I think Ohio state, especially if you, if you can go into Austin stadium and when I think you can go into Lucas oil stadium and when, because Ohio state fans.

are not taking a four and a half hour flight and then a two and a half hour drive down to Eugene. They’re driving two and a half hours and they’re in Lucas Oil Stadium from Columbus. I think that that game is going to be much more favorable environment for Ohio State. I think especially as you look at, you know, maybe where this team could be at the end of the year, like this is a veteran team already, but I think that the offensive line could be getting better as the year goes on. You know, I think that they’ve got the requisite.

depth to work with if things go haywire and you need to replace some guys in the secondary or on the defensive line or whatever. think Ohio State’s not really a team that’s gonna go down as the year goes on. So I think if they play Oregon again, which is what I’m predicting, I think they’d beat them twice.

Stefan Krajisnik (21:03.406)

Yeah, I’ve got, I’ve got them beating Oregon in the big 10 title game. you’re taking away the aspect of playing on the road and things like that. Also, I think an offensive line is probably at the core of this. I think the, this Ohio state team is a lot better in December than they are in September. And most teams probably feel like that. I’m not necessarily going out on a limb to say that, but when it comes to the offensive line specifically, I think when we get to December, we’re going to be like, Whoa.

this team is where they need to be going into the college football playoffs. So I’ve got them beating Oregon in the big 10 title game and hopefully they don’t have those coconut seed turf, whatever that was at the big 10 media days that ruined everyone’s shoes that hopefully they don’t have that at Lucas oil again, because there’s going to be some upset football players if they’re wearing nice cleats, getting them ruined for the college football playoff.

Stephen Means (21:53.677)

You think they have one pair of cleats or just get a new pair of cleats? I think it’s weird. I think what’s up.

Stefan Krajisnik (21:57.902)

That’s fair. We are talking about Oregon and Ohio State, getting new cleats from Nike is probably not the toughest thing.

Stephen Means (22:03.471)

Yeah. think Phil Knight would love that if they played three times this year, also Lucas O stadium, 70 ‚000 cedar Austin stadium, 54 ,000 cedar. You know what I’m saying? That’s, that’s a side note. I think the bigger thing here is the last time Ohio state had to play a team twice and once in the regular season, once in the big 10 championship game. Obviously the first game was at home and it was against Wisconsin in 2019. That’s the game where Chase Young became a Heisman trophy candidate.

They won 38 to seven, so they blew, they kind of torched them. And that first game, Chase Young took over that game. Then in the second game, they had to come back 34 or 21 and that when that game, but they were losing at halftime. It’s very difficult to be the team twice. But also Oregon, the last time it had to play a team twice, it lost to Washington on the road in the regular season, 36 to 33. And then it also lost to Washington again in Las Vegas in the POP 12 championship game, 34 to 31. I just, I’m just wondering.

I’m just wondering, I think one of these games is going to be a 14 point win. I just think that the fact that Washington only won by three points twice is amazing to me, right? It’s because you’re playing a team twice. It’s just kind of hard to be competitive like that twice against a team, which is why a foot playing a seven game series in a football game sounds ridiculous, right? Because the games would be all over the place. I think Ohio State wins the first game by like seven or less.

And I mean like, because somebody scored a touchdown late, I’m picking Ohio State to be Oregon in the Big Ten Championship game by like 10 or more points. And it’s just because maybe Ohio State figure some things out, but also to Andrew’s point, the offensive line will be further along. But also, Ohio State indoors is one of the scariest teams in college football, period. That is an absolute fact.

Stefan Krajisnik (23:42.775)

Stephen Means (23:58.991)

You can go back to 2014, what they did to Wisconsin in the Big 10 championship game. Marvin Harrison Jr. was talking about it back in 2022. He’s like, yeah, this is the first time I’m going to play indoors against Georgia, right? You’re talking about a team who habitually has to deal with weather elements. And now all of sudden you’re putting them on a fast track. That’s signs for Will Howard might be able to throw the ball around that day or Trevion Henderson or Quintchon Judkins get to the edge and now they’re off to the races. When you have a team like that.

And then you put them indoors. saw what can happen. Now, Georgia ultimately won that game, but I think the point was still made, Stephon. Ohio State indoors is just a little different than other teams who are indoors. And I’m not taking anything away from the SEC schools or from Oregon. It’s just, I’ve seen it in person how different Ohio State can operate when the weather is not a conversation at all. And so taking that into account, I think

Maybe Ohio State throws a haymaker early, but it’s still a back and forth when it’s in Eugene. But I think Ohio State might throw a couple of haymakers when they get to Indianapolis.

Stefan Krajisnik (25:04.142)

Yeah, I agree. you’re talking about, you know, 70 ‚000 Lucas oil stadium. mean, Yeah, I was going to say that’s that’s 70 ‚000 mostly your fans though. So yeah, I mean, this team is built to be really successful wherever they play, but especially, you know, inside a dome like that, a Lucas oil, this offense has a chance to really tear it up. I’m with you though. mean, I, I had them losing at Oregon and I had them beating Oregon by double digits in the big 10 championship game. And maybe, maybe part of that is

Stephen Means (25:08.985)

That’s a home game for house date. Yeah. Yeah.

Stefan Krajisnik (25:33.838)

because I had them losing like you have a chance to avenge the one blemish on your resume. You leave no doubt and you say, Hey, on a neutral field, we’re way better than this team. And you have that in your favor. And I know we’ll get into it. You have that on your favor. If there’s a debate between the one seat and the two seat of who, know, is it going to be Ohio state is going to be the SEC team. You have that to say, Hey, the one blemish on my resume, I made up for it. And that’s the conversation Oregon had last year. Right. It was like, Hey, if they could, if they could be.

Washington in the Pac -12 title game that avenges the one loss you had in the regular season and you’re the team that’s in the playoff.

Stephen Means (26:12.047)

Okay, so we all have Ohio State winning the Big Ten Championship game. Andrew and I have them going 13 and 0 on their way to the Big Ten Championship game. Stephon, they’ll be 12 and 1 by the time they win the Big Ten Championship game. Just some back facts as we get into the next part of this pod. Ohio State’s record during the college football playoff 14 playoff era, 108 and 10 in three Big Ten Championship games. that’s, excuse me, no, no, that’s wrong, four, no, five Big Ten Championships. I don’t know why I forgot this.

2014, they win the big 10 championship game. And that’s how you sneak into the college football playoff. 2017, they win the big 10 championship, 2018, 2019, and then 2020. So one eight and 10 and five big 10 championships from Ohio state record. All three of us have them winning the big 10. Andrew and I have them going undefeated. Stefan has them going 11 and one just for the sake our textures. 95 % said they’re going to win the big 10 championship game. 4 % said they were going to get there and lose and only 1 % saying they’re going to miss the big 10.

championship. Okay, we’re take our first break here and then we’re transition to what December is going to look like for Ohio State, but also around the country and get a look at what the top four seeds in the college football playoff are gonna look like and we’ll get into that when we come back from the break.

Stephen Means (27:29.903)

And we’re back here on Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means, Kreisnick, and Andrew Gillis. We’re talking Ohio State’s 2024 season, how we think that’s going to play out. So far, the regular season, Andrew and I said they’re going to go undefeated. Stefan has them losing the Oregon and going 11 -1, but then he has them avenging that loss in the Big Ten Championship game, while Andrew and I also have them beating Oregon in the Big Ten Championship. So now we’re going to transition to the college football playoff. Factual information here for guys first.

Ohio state is the only team during the 14 era who, where, if it would have been a 12 team college football playoff, they would have gotten in every single year. Not only would they have gotten in every single year, they would have at worst had at least a home game every single year. 2014, they’re the fourth seed. go on to win the national championship in 2015 and their road to repeat as national champions. They lose to Michigan state in the regular season and it ends that journey. They end up number seven. In 2016, they sneak in.

At 11 and one and they the number three seed they lose the Clemson in a shutout game comes in when I game 36 to nothing the following year 2017 they go 11 and to their number five seed and 2018 or 12 and wonder number six seed and then in 2019 they’re the number two seed that’s the highest seed they had during the 14 college football playoff error when I go 13 and no and they lose the Clemson and 29 20 28 excuse me they go three seed six and

Win the big 10 beat Clemson, lose to Alabama national championship game in 2021. They are the sixth seed going 10 and two losing the Oregon and Michigan during the regular season. They’re the number four seed in 2022 after losing the Michigan, but shout out to Utah for beating USC. They’re able to sneak in and get pushed Georgia to the brink. Finish that regular season 11 and one. And then last year they were 11 and lose to Michigan and ended up the seventh seed.

Never any lower than seven, never any higher than two during the college football playoff era. So let’s start with this. Stefan, what’s Ohio State football’s seed in the 2024 college football playoff first year of the 12 team playoff era?

Stefan Krajisnik (29:35.854)

Yeah, I think they’re going to be the one seed because because of our predictions, you know, if they’re either going undefeated or they’re making up for their loan blemish with beating Oregon in the Big 10 title game, you’re going to have a case for the SEC team. No doubt. I mean, every year it’s going to be Big Ten or SEC are going to be making their argument for the one seed. But I think Ohio State will earn the one this year. And I think it is a benefit to them that

to get the potential to play Oregon twice because you’re either going to avenge that loss or you’re going to beat them twice. And that’s going to be, I mean, I’d be stunned if Oregon is not a playoff team. So I think the big 10 gets the one seed with Ohio State this year. I don’t think based on my predictions, I don’t think anyone in college football is going undefeated in the regular season. And if someone does, it’s Ohio State.

Stephen Means (30:26.893)

I think there’s some merit to that just because of what their schedule is like in comparison to some other people where it does feel like. They be Oregon, they’re going to feel like Oregon maybe has the second best chance just because some of it’s if you beat Ohio State, but to your point, just go how it has three games and two of the three are on the road. But one of them against a guy who has improvement, he can win big games yet. And that’s James Franklin. He has a long history of not winning big games. Another one is Michigan, which is your rival, but it’s also at home. And the other one is a guy, Dan landing who.

Looks like he’s building something, but again, where is his signature win? understand what you’re saying. Ohio State probably does have the best chance of anybody of going undefeated this year. Andrew, where is Ohio State for you?

Andrew (31:07.731)

Number one, numero uno. They’re 13 and 0. I predicted them to go 13 and 0. I don’t think an SEC team is going to go 13 and 0. Looking at some of those schedules, I mean, some of those schedules are daunting. Georgia and Texas have to play each other. Georgia and Alabama have to play each other. I believe Alabama plays Ole Miss. Alabama’s got to play LSU. Like, they’re going to cannibalize each other to some extent. And...

We can get into this in a little bit, but I do think the SEC playing that type of schedule, it’s going to, I mean, it’s going to artificially depress some of their, some of their records, right? Like Georgia schedules, ridiculously difficult. I act Georgia plays Ole Miss too, I think actually. So it’s like Georgia has to play Bama, Texas and Ole Miss. That’s crazy. And they have to go to, I think they have to go to Bryant Denny and they definitely have to go to Austin.

That’s a really difficult schedule and I just don’t see an SEC team emerging out of that undefeated. Frankly, to me, if an SEC team specifically like Georgia, Alabama or Texas does emerge from that undefeated, they will be the number one seed because I think their road when you map it out at the end of the year, I think their quality wins will be better than Ohio State’s quality wins or.

I guess theoretically whoever wins the big 10. I just think that like if you’re mapping out like two 12 and ones or two 13 and O’s, I think they will have the better resume. So I think Ohio State will be the number one seed just because I think nobody in the SEC is going to go undefeated with that schedule. So that’s why I have Ohio State number

Stephen Means (32:55.353)

I think that’s the only way the Big Ten gets the number one seed this year. And it’s not because it’s a Big Ten SEC bias. It’s because the SEC teams who I think are actually in the running to get the number one seed will have a better resume if both of them, if both them in big, in either Ohio State or Penn State or Oregon or Michigan is undefeated or the Big Ten’s champion has one loss and the SEC’s champion also has one loss. just, the rest, just because of the schedule of.

The teams I think can actually get the number one seed from the SEC are Alabama, Georgia and Ole Miss to be frank about it. And they have their schedule this year just gives them a resume that allows them to be put in position to get the number one seed. Even if they slip up, if all the teams around the country slip up. I also have them as the number one seed. I didn’t give our Texas option to go one, two, three and four. I gave them the options to go Ohio State football’s college football playoff seed will be top four seed, which is the first round by number five through eight, which is the first round home game.

numbers 9 through 12, which is a first round road game and won’t make the college football playoff. 1 % said they won’t make the college football playoff. Another 1 % said they would get 9 through 12. 6 % said 5 through 8. 93 % overwhelming think they’re going to get a first round by. Well, no, get because I mean that is winning the Big 10 championship game.

Stefan Krajisnik (34:11.886)

They’re a 95 % victim to win the Big Ten.

Stephen Means (34:16.429)

Yes, they did.

Stefan Krajisnik (34:17.934)

So 2 % of the people, I don’t think, the structure of the playoff.

Stephen Means (34:20.367)

No, no, no. But but but but. Yes and no, I think. Yeah, I don’t know. Listen, math is math. Who knows? It’s math. It’s math. It’s OK. OK, we all have them as a number one. See, now this is where it gets interesting because we have to pick an SEC team. We have to pick an AC team. We have to pick a big 12 team for these other spots and figure out where they are.

Stefan Krajisnik (34:29.55)

Stephen Means (34:46.159)

Let’s just do this, because I don’t want to make this a long -winded thing of we have to break down every single SEC, Big 12, and ACC team, because that’s just not where our heads are at right now. We’re trying to get prepared to watch Ohio State play football for the next three months. Let’s just go two through three. Stephon, you go first. Who’s two, who’s three, and who’s four?

Stefan Krajisnik (35:05.742)

Number two, I have Georgia winning the SEC. Number three, I have Florida State winning the ACC. And number four, the Big Tool is pretty crazy this year. It’s not the best conference. It’s not the deepest conference because their number five team would lose to most number five teams in the Big Ten or the SEC. But they’re the most balanced where I think one through like seven, they’re all probably the same, which makes it really fun to watch.

Stephen Means (35:16.845)

Stefan Krajisnik (35:35.07)

I’m going to Oklahoma State. I like their schedule. They’re at home against Utah, who I think is actually the best team in the conference. So think they got a chance to stack their resume. And I feel so stupid picking my Gundy, but you know what? Why not? Holly Gordon, top four seed. Let’s ride, baby.

Stephen Means (35:52.687)

I think we’re gonna have our first top four seed who was a nine and three team, potentially. And it’s because the big 12 is just, it’s not competitive. Everybody’s just average. They’re just gonna cannibalize each other. I love it. I think it makes for some entertaining Saturdays if you live in the Southwest region.

Stefan Krajisnik (35:58.243)

Stefan Krajisnik (36:05.39)

That’s fine. That’s fine.

Stefan Krajisnik (36:13.838)

There will be two, it might happen this year, but it’s gonna happen within the next three years no doubt where a nine and three team gets that four seed and there’s a five seed for the big 10 of the SEC that’s like, sweet, we get to play Oklahoma State and then they lose. And you’re just like, well, you overlooked your opponent in the playoff.

Stephen Means (36:26.127)

through the 11 and 1.

Stephen Means (36:34.031)

It’s the big 12 is just, it’s such a funny. Okay. So you’ve got Ohio State number one, Georgia number two, Florida State number three and Oklahoma State number four. Andrew, what’s your top four? Two, three, four.

Andrew (36:47.475)

Well, that I mean, if if the big 12, if you have a nine and three, that would be that would open up the door for the G five to get a buy, which would be really interesting if you have like a 13 and like whoever like I, you know, I did my whole bracket. have Boise State making it like a Boise State goes 13 and and you’re talking about nine and three, whoever that’s an interesting conversation to have. But Ohio State won Georgia to Clemson three.

and Utah four. went with chalk in the big 12. I do think Utah is a little bit terrifying towards the end of the year for some of these teams. think, you know, what do we know about Utah every year? It feels like they just they’re a physical team to play. They’re a tough team to play. They’re a headache to play because you know, you’re kind of in for a war. They always get better as the year goes on.

Right? Like we always talk about Utah just towards the end of the year. Like nobody wants to see Utah at the end of the year. I think that’s an interesting kind of point here. But obviously we’re not going to go too deep into this. So that’s my one through four Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson and Utah. I think I’m not a DJ you guy. I’m not a believer at this point. I don’t think Florida State is I don’t think Florida State is a playoff team at all. I think Clemson has

enough talent to win the ACC that I just the ACC is kind of down like it’s like Clemson Miami Florida State maybe maybe maybe Virginia Tech if you want to squint really hard. So I think I think it’s going to be Clemson and I got burned last year by Davos bunch. So I’m going to take him again as a top four seed.

Stephen Means (38:30.723)

And you didn’t learn.

Stefan Krajisnik (38:32.333)

I just, I respect you saying that you’re not a believer in DJU and then having Cade Klubnick make it to the playoff.

Stephen Means (38:38.873)

having the team who’s responsible for why you don’t believe in DJ Mu in the college football playoff. It’s good to see that Clemson still has guys who believe in them, a team who went nine to four last year, has someone out there who believes in them. You got burned last year and you said, let me double down on Dabo. Let me double down on Dabo.

Stefan Krajisnik (38:41.581)

Andrew (38:42.663)

I don’t know if he’s responsible, but...

Andrew (38:55.121)

Yep. That’s what good gamblers do. You start losing and you say, you know what, let’s throw more at this.

Stephen Means (39:02.159)

Double down on Davao. That’s what you did there. I actually thought about putting the Group of Five team in my top four, just because what if the Big 12 is that bad? To where like, come on man, like I get it, you won your conference, but you’re nine and three. You’re freaking nine and three, and Liberty might be undefeated. Seriously, their schedule is god awful. So they might be undefeated. I don’t think this is actually going to happen though, and I didn’t want to be the guy to grow out on that ledge. So I went.

Andrew (39:21.799)

Stephen Means (39:28.653)

Ohio State’s number one, Georgia’s number two. So it’s interesting. We all have a consensus number one and number two, which is basically the AP preseason top two teams flipped, which is because we all think Georgia might drop a game this year while how they might go undefeated or at least be in a better position to wait. If you have Ohio State number one before I give my list, but you also have them losing a game. How many games you have Georgia losing Stefan?

Stefan Krajisnik (39:50.926)

I have Georgia losing one game, I kind of win. understand what you guys were saying where Georgia with their schedule will get the benefit of the doubt. I just think that in the SEC title game is going to be Georgia and Ole Miss. I think Georgia is going to have two wins against Ole Miss on their schedule, whereas Ohio State will avenge their one loss. So I went with Ohio State being the one going into the championship weekend and staying there.

Stephen Means (40:08.879)

Stephen Means (40:14.561)

Stefan Krajisnik (40:16.588)

It’s a fair argument. mean, the argument’s gonna be had, no doubt.

Stephen Means (40:19.895)

think that’s going to be an interesting conversation. it’s essentially, mean, the number one thing he just gets to pick where they go play football. It’s you know what saying? It doesn’t really change. It’s not like the NFL.

Stefan Krajisnik (40:29.87)

And I don’t think with these one and twos, how the, and I don’t know off the top of my head, but I think Ohio State is going to get the Rose Bowl regardless. I don’t think Georgia has taken the Rose Bowl.

Stephen Means (40:37.433)

correct because there are no Ohio State loves the Rose Bowl. Obviously the Big Ten has history with the Rose Bowl. So I’ll say how they’re to pick the Rose Bowl or get sent to the Rose Bowl. Unless for some reason they end up with a four seed and then they’re probably going to not play the Rose Bowl. But I just I just that I think that’s going to be an interesting conversation of a team avenging its loss versus a team who just beat a team twice who’s going to be a pretty good team that they will have beaten how the committee maybe handles that.

when you’re talking about the one and really just across the board there. is your Ohio State and Georgia are my clear number one and number two. I have Florida State making a playoff. I do believe in DJ. I think last year he showed some things that Clemson plus the ACC kind of, it’s kind of right. I think Florida State is going to sneak in and they’re going to get a top four seed, which they should have gotten last year, but I’m that’s it’s a new year. I guess I’ll leave it alone for now, but I think Florida State gets in and then I have Kansas State.

of Kansas State coming out of that big 12. One, because I think they just might come out on top of the, I think that Kansas State’s a pretty good football team. And I think they might come out as a 10 and two big 12 championship, but also it means we’re a game away from the vibes. And I’m all about the vibes. I’m all about the vibes here. I’m all about the storylines. And the storyline here is this. Oklahoma had Dylan Gabriel as a starting quarterback last year. He is now at Oregon.

Part of the reason he is at Oregon is because Jackson Arnold’s a five -star recruit who’s now in his second year. And so you could be okay with losing Dylan Gabriel. If you live in the Kansas State bubble, you might not feel like you lost to Will Howard. You might feel like you let Will Howard go because you Avery Johnson is pretty good. So I’m here for the vibe. I’m here for the vibes. I’m here for the, let’s settle it. Let’s settle it on the field. Let’s settle it on the field now.

Andrew (42:21.468)

Avery Johnson, Fun football player.

Stephen Means (42:31.075)

We’ll get into my final four. So we’ll get a chance to describe whether or not I think that actually happens or not, but let’s set it up. Let’s set it up and give it an opportunity here. Who really won? Did Ohio State win? And no, the question is, did Ohio State win by adding Will Howard? The question is, did Kansas State lose Will Howard or did they win Avery Johnson? That’s the answer I want to get this year. And maybe we’ll get it. Maybe we won’t. We’ll get into that when I predict some things. But I have Ohio State won Georgia two, Florida State three, Kansas State four.

Stefan, you have Ohio State one, Georgia two, Florida State three, Oklahoma State four. So it’s interesting. all, we have the same top three and then Andrew at a left field decides to go Ohio State, Georgia and then Clemson and then Utah. Utah is a good pool though. Utah is a quality program. They actually, if it wasn’t going to be Kansas State, I was going to pick Utah.

Stefan Krajisnik (43:19.822)

I’m interested too to see. So we all have the ACC is a three seed because I think whoever wins the ACC will probably be like 11 and one, 10 and two in a regular season. But I think the winner of the big 12 will be a better team. Cause I’m not like we’re talking about Florida state Clemson, maybe Miami or like Louisville or Virginia tech makes a run. I just think the SEC or the, ACC.

has a couple decent teams at the top and then there’s a massive drop off and whoever wins the conference is kind of just going to take advantage of some weaker opponents where the big 12 will kind of cannibalize itself. If I’m going into the playoff, I’d rather play some, the ACC champ is than whoever’s maybe got hot at the end of big 12 play and win a one a conference title. think Utah like on paper is better than Florida state or Clemson or Miami or whatever.

Stephen Means (44:09.412)

I agree. just think resume, right? I think the committee, but this is why the first rankings are going to be so important and how the committee does it. Cause it hasn’t been the same every year. Last year, what was more important resume. That’s why Ohio state was number one. When those first rankings came out, there have been years where it’s like, okay, there’s a bunch of teams with the same resume. This team’s better, right? It’s a different thing every single year. I agree with you. I think the best team in the big 12 this year is going to be better than the best team in the ACC, but

Stefan Krajisnik (44:15.628)

Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.

Stephen Means (44:41.231)

If the big 12 doesn’t do itself any favors and you look at the end of the year and the big 12 champion has a bunch of wins over eight and four, nine and three teams. It’s just not going to look as sexy as the one loss ACC champ who has a bunch of wins over 10 and two teams. It’s to that point. It’s all about those first rankings and what the committee tells us about what they’re going to value the most. Okay. Those are our top fours. So now let’s transition here. We’re not going to do the full 12, but we are going to do.

Yep. Ohio State versus Alabama. I have Alabama won five. That’s a semi final. I think Ohio State’s can beat Alabama in that semi final. Then the other semi final I have number two, Georgia versus number six, Oregon, and Ohio or excuse me, Georgia will beat Oregon in that semi final. So I think we’re gonna have a national championship game of Ohio State and Georgia. You know, as I as I look at this, you know,

You map this out, you know, the, the, the eight that I had in the quarterfinal, you know, it’s Clemson, Georgia, Utah, Bama. I understand Clemson and Utah are technically the higher seeds, but I do think Oregon and Alabama are the better programs. I think they’re the better teams. So I think as you map out this playoff scenario, I think it’s a very, you know, some of these talent equated games are going to be very unique. and kind of how they map out and how the, how the bracket shapes out. but I do think Oregon being.

The sixth seed, I think their only two losses are going to come to the same team. And I think that number one, I think it’s going to be the number one team in the country. So I don’t know how much they’re going to be hurt by that. I think Alabama, I think they’re going to lose once. And I think it’s going to be the number two team in the country. So I don’t know how much they’re going to be hurt by that. I think those are the five and six teams. I think Alabama gets a nice little path there because, you you would have to play a home game, but you’re probably going to play.

the G5 as things shake out, you’re probably going to play the G5 at home and then you’re going to play the number four seed, which in this case have Utah. So I don’t think things are going to be too bad for Alabama. I’ve made that case before that. think the five is not a bad seed to have. So Ohio state versus Alabama one five or excuse me, Georgia versus Oregon two six and Ohio state versus Georgia in the national championship game.

Stephen Means (02:00.807)

Okay, one and five and two and six. Okay, Stefan, you are up. What is your final four matchups?

Stefan Krajisnik (02:06.494)

Andrew props to you for believing in Bama because I think the board is good and I think their team is good, but geez, all their hard games are on the road except for Georgia, like Tennessee, LSU, Oklahoma, all on the road. is a brutal draw for Caitlin DeBore. Number one. so my top four, have Ohio state as the one seat, as I mentioned, I have them getting a rematch with five seat Oregon. And then I have two seat Georgia getting oddly enough, I guess a third time rematch with six seat Ole Miss. So I’ve,

Stephen Means (02:18.432)

Stefan Krajisnik (02:35.778)

What’s funny is I think one five two six is going to be chalk. Actually more than one two three four is going to be just because I think second best SEC team, second best big 10 team are going to be believed in more than the ACC champ and the big 12 champ. So, am I supposed to get my predictions who windows semi wins the semifinal games? I got Ohio state, winning the best of three and beating Oregon.

Stephen Means (02:54.9)

Yeah, you can do that.

Stefan Krajisnik (03:01.204)

And I’ve got Georgia, sweeping a three game series with Ole Miss.

Stephen Means (03:08.042)

You guys are boring. But also, it’s not boring, because that’s kind of rough, having to be... What C was Ole Miss for you again? Six? Okay, so essentially...

Stefan Krajisnik (03:15.358)

Add them in the sixth seed. I think they’re going to two losses, but they’ll both be to Georgia.

Stephen Means (03:20.928)

So essentially, think this is wonderful because it’s like, okay, here are the teams who are going to the top four seats, but here are the actual four best teams in college football.

Stefan Krajisnik (03:31.234)

You’re the four best teams the two best SEC teams and the two best big tech

Stephen Means (03:35.796)

Yeah, which I think the big sense of the SEC would love that. It’s like, yeah, the other two teams who are our top four have to be here because those are the rules, but that’s not what we really want to put here.

Stefan Krajisnik (03:46.292)

Hopefully, hopefully I’m wrong. And if it is these four teams, it’s flopped. So it’s Ohio State versus Ole Miss and Georgia versus Oregon. Like I think everyone would benefit from not seeing a third time, but I just think if Oregon is one on one against Ohio State, they’re going to be the five seed.

Stephen Means (04:05.75)

So I thought a long time about which of these non -SEC Big Ten schools can maybe just make some noise? Who can throw a wrench in this? Because it’s gonna happen, right? I mean, it’s the first year doing this. And the point of doing this was, hey, there’s more teams who can be competing for the national championship. And it’s like, no, there’s not. it’s like, yes, there is. No, there’s not. Yes, there is. And then Ohio State goes in 2014. See? Right? You sneak in as the fourth seed. You beat Bama. You beat Oregon.

If this was the BCS era, Ohio State doesn’t win the national championship in 2014. So it’s like, see, see what happens when you let more than two teams actually compete for a national title. And I’m open to the idea of, see, there’s like eight teams every year who could win a national title. The seven seed just won a national title. The problem is the gap between four and seven this season specifically.

is a lot deeper, is a lot wider than the gap between two and five was in the BCS era. Just in this year, that could reset. And I think there are going to be some years where we get to the College Football Playoff and it’s like, man, there’s like nine teams. One of these teams can win it. It’s just the talent right now is so consolidated between really three, four five teams that it was hard for me to do so. And so again, I love the vibes. So, you know, I got to find the vibes here.

But also just, I looked at some of these teams and I went, who could just benefit from not having to play their conference for a little bit? And so I ended up with Georgia over number six, Oregon, because I don’t have, I have the SEC getting the five seed this year and I think it’s gonna be Ole Miss who gets it. I just, I don’t have Ole Miss making the final four though. And the reason why I don’t have them making the final four is because I have.

No, excuse me. I have that wrong. Excuse me. I have Ole Miss at number nine I have Texas getting to the big SEC Championship game and losing and I have what you have Stefan where we talked about this during the AP poll pod where it’s like man, Texas is schedule is rough If Texas gets out of this schedule undefeated, they’re gonna be the number one seed But also I think if their only loss is to Texas I think they’re gonna be the five seed if they lose it, excuse me They lose to Georgia twice and I have that playing out

Stephen Means (06:35.222)

They lose to Georgia during the regular season. Then they also lose to Georgia again during the college football playoffs, excuse me, during the big SEC championship game. That’s not, I have Bama beating Georgia during the regular season, but I have Georgia being 11 and one and I have Texas being 11 and one, both getting to the SEC championship game. Georgia wins that game and then they play each other, excuse me, then they play each other again in the SEC championship game. And Georgia was that game as well. So I have Ohio State over Texas as the five seed.

and I have Georgia over Oregon. All of us, I took the weirdest way possible to say all of us are boring. We all did the same thing. We all said here are the four top teams, but here are the four best teams in college football, but also Ohio State versus Texas. Vibes, man, vibes. And that’s what I’m here for, the vibes.

Andrew (07:09.499)

Andrew (07:20.499)

How many, I’m curious, like how many big 10 teams did you guys have in your 12 team field?

Stephen Means (07:28.016)

I mean we did this during the Big Ten Media Day poll. We have three. I have three. Yeah.

Andrew (07:30.811)

Yeah, I forget that. forget. How many did you? You had three? Okay. Stefan.

Stefan Krajisnik (07:35.624)

I had three as well, but I’ve since then changed from thinking Michigan would be the third team to thinking Penn State is going to be the third team.

Andrew (07:41.371)

Okay, yeah, I, cause I had three big tens and five SEC. That was how I, that was how I shaped. Yeah, that was how I shaped this out.

Stephen Means (07:41.502)

I think Pinsett can be a good name.

Stephen Means (07:46.838)

You have five SEC teams. So you’re essentially so the losers of the big 12 and ACC championship games are not both in your college football playoff.

Andrew (07:58.419)

Correct. I have one ACC, one Big 12, one G5, three Big 10, five SEC, and independent Notre Dame. Those are my 12 playoff teams.

Stefan Krajisnik (08:11.029)

Stephen Means (08:11.99)

I have the Loo -Wood.

Andrew (08:12.081)

Yeah, I I think I just I, I think when you map out the SEC schedule, I just I have questions about like, who the fourth Big Ten is, like, is that Michigan who has losses to Ohio State, Oregon and Texas, who is probably a playoff team? I mean, I don’t like if Michigan does go nine and three, I don’t think their resumes all that good. Is Iowa in that scenario? Like is like

Stephen Means (08:39.254)

I think if I was 10 and 2 they’d make the college football.

Andrew (08:41.745)

If I was sending that’s pot. Yeah, that’s absolutely possible that Iowa makes the playoff. think that they were under consideration for me. can like Iowa was I’ve had other teams considered on your Iowa, Miami, Missouri, and Florida state. There were two those. No, I did not. I did not. I did not consider the corn. Yeah, it did not consider the corn. But yeah, I, I think, Steven, I wanted to bring that up because I do think your point like, we’re boring. But

Stefan Krajisnik (08:54.498)

Did you consider Nebraska?

Neither of us had a Nebraska at our title four.

Stephen Means (09:03.69)

You know what’s crazy?

Andrew (09:12.179)

I map out my teams and nine through 12 for me is Penn State, Notre Dame, LSU and Boise State. I don’t think any of those programs are going to win a national championship. I think that there’s a difference between playoff and national championship caliber. And I don’t think Clemson or Utah can win a national championship. So to me, right off the bat, like I’m looking at four of my playoff teams going, Hey, look, they’re probably a playoff team because their record indicates that they are. They beat everybody else. They did what they had to do to get in the playoff.

I don’t take them seriously as national championship contenders. And then I look at Clemson in Utah and I feel the same way. And all of a sudden, you’re down to six. You know, you’re down to Ohio State, you’re down to Georgia, you’re down to Alabama, you’re down to Oregon, you’re down to Texas, and you’re down to Ole Miss. That was how I did that. So I don’t know. I think boring might just be another word for correct in this scenario.

Stephen Means (10:05.27)

So let’s, I wanna ask Steph on this, because I had some problems.

Did you have Alabama making the playoff this year?

Stefan Krajisnik (10:15.784)

Yeah, but probably not even playing at home. It’s a brutal schedule.

Stephen Means (10:24.118)

I went back and forth between them and Oklahoma at 10.

Stefan Krajisnik (10:27.938)

So my thing with Oklahoma is I’m not 100 % sure if they’re a great team this year. I kind of need to see their quarterback situation play out. But I’m with you in the sense that the teams they play, because they play Ole Miss, Texas, they play Bama, they play Bama at home. Like the teams they play, and I think they play LSU as well, are kind of teams I think will teeter between being a playoff team or not. And it’s like...

Stephen Means (10:36.598)

That’s, yeah.

Stefan Krajisnik (10:54.114)

If Oklahoma beats some of those, like you’re just pointing to head to head and being like, Hey, put us in ahead of Bama. beat Bama. So Oklahoma is a sneaky team that has the perfect schedule to make it as like a 10 seat or something, because they’re going to be, or have a chance to beat some of those teams are in that conversation.

Stephen Means (11:12.598)

Since we’re listing off the rest of our list, I’m just gonna say my Ohio State one, Georgia two, Florida State three, Kansas State four, Texas five, Oregon six, I Penn State at seven, Iowa at eight, Ole Miss at nine, Oklahoma 10, Liberty at 11, though I’m thinking if Liberty’s undefeated, they might jump the line of some of these SEC and Big Ten schools and they might put them at seven, but for now I put them at 11 and I have Clemson at 12. I have, excuse me, no, have Utah, excuse me, I went back and forth between Clemson and Utah.

as my 12th seed. think there’s gonna be two big 12 teams who make it this year. If it’s Kansas State and Utah, or it’s because Utah lost in the big 12 championship game, which is what I have, Utah losing the big 12 championship. I think that’s how, I think Utah is good enough to where that’s how they get two big 12 teams into it. Okay, so our official final fours. I have Ohio State beating Texas and Georgia beating Oregon. Stephon has Ohio State beating Oregon for the third time and Georgia beating Ole Miss.

Andrew has Ohio state beating Alabama and Georgia meeting Oregon. Let’s take our last break here and then we’ll get into whether or not we think Ohio state’s going to win the national championship.

Stephen Means (12:24.47)

So we’re back here on Buckeye Talk and we all have Ohio State playing in the national championship game and we all have Georgia playing in the national championship game, us and everybody else on the planet. That’s how boring we are here on Buckeye Talk. Nobody got weird with this. But also listen, it’s one of those years, right? And we’ve had that in the 12 team playoff year where it’s like, it’s Alabama and Clemson, all this doesn’t matter. it’s Alabama and Ohio State, none of this matters. it’s Clemson and Ohio State, none of this matters, right? We’ve all had those years, which is why.

Part of me is on alert for something else. I think in 2020, it was like, Ohio State and Clemson are gonna rematch the national championship game this year. That’s just what’s gonna happen. And then I remember us on this pod talking about, what if Bama is like really angry coming off of how last year went? What does angry Bama look like? Well, it looks like a super team with a wide receiver wins a Heisman trophy. That’s what it looks like. I don’t think angry Bama’s on the table this year. I don’t think Bama is head over heels more talented than everybody else.

But is there like a super team who can arise? A year before that, it was like, it’s Alabama and Clemson. They’re to play in the national championship game again. And then LSU came out of nowhere. And I’m wondering who that team is or if like Ohio State’s just that team this year. We already are expecting it. Though we’ve talked about Stephon, maybe Ole Miss can be that. We both have Ole Miss in our college football playoff, just not making the final four. So we did boring. Fine. It’s whatever. First are Texas. Ohio State’s 2024 season will end by.

Nobody said losing in the first round. 1 % said losing in a non college football bowl game, which means there is 1 % of our texting community who doesn’t think Ohio State is going to make the college football playoff, which again.

Stefan Krajisnik (14:03.202)

I’m guessing that’s the same person who them going 93 or worse and had them not making the College Football playoff.

Stephen Means (14:08.694)

Again, if they do not make the college football playoff in the 12 team season, it’s going to be an interesting December. That’s just facts. I don’t know if it’s going to be that interesting, but it’s going to least be interesting enough. 1 % said losing in the quarterfinals, 7 % said losing in the final four, which means the other 92 % have them in the national championship game and either winning it or losing it. I’ll wait to break down.

Andrew (14:14.887)

We’re putting together coaching lists if they don’t make the playoff.

Stephen Means (14:34.582)

where guys landed on that because Andrew, want you to go first here. You have Ohio State versus Georgia in your national championship game who is winning in Atlanta when those two guys rematch what what the Peach Bowl was in 2022.

Andrew (14:49.905)

The Georgia Bulldogs. think Georgia wins the national championship over Ohio State. I know I didn’t pick Carson Beck to be on my Heisman podium. I didn’t have him in the final four. I mean, Georgia is still really good and I think Carson Beck is still a really good quarterback. Their defense is very good. I know Kirby Smart is like trying to downplay some of their depth.

Like I’ve seen a couple of quotes about that, how he’s like talking about that. was like, he talking like Saban now. but George, mean, Georgia is still re a really, really good unit. you know, they’re, like they added, transfer running back ETN. They added your sec, the tight end from Stanford. Your sex really good too. Like that might be there like Brock Bowers replacement. Like I just, I look at Georgia and we talked about them last year as a team.

think Stefan has that question like, would you have been surprised if the 12th team playoff was last year if Georgia had won the national championship? I think the answer is no, because Georgia is just that good. So you know, maybe we’re talking about Georgia being angry this year, and Georgia kind of taking that by storm. So I think the Bulldogs won the national championship over Ohio State seems fairly chalky. I’m picking the AP one and two team.

to play in the national championship game and I’m picking the team that’s number one to play. But I think that’s where we’re at with Georgia. just, think that Georgia might be maybe more well -rounded and I look to areas like the offensive line and at quarterback where I think they might have a slight advantage over Ohio State and that’s why I’m picking them.

Stephen Means (16:31.51)

So you have Ohio State losing to Georgia in the national championship in Atlanta. Okay, Stefan, who you have won in the game.

Stefan Krajisnik (16:42.146)

Can I pose a question before I give my prediction?

Stephen Means (16:44.138)

You can do whatever you want, man.

Andrew (16:44.572)

Stefan Krajisnik (16:46.07)

so Andrew has Ohio State losing to Georgia in a national championship game. Is anything outside of a national championship game appearance a disappointment for this, for this team?

Andrew (17:00.371)

I think it depends. Like I think it depends what happens. Like does Ohio State go, you know, does, does Ohio State lose at Oregon and lose in the big 10 championship game and then make the final four and lose? Like that’s a disappointment. Does Ohio State go 13 and get to the final four. And then you play, you know, you’re the number one seed and you play five seed Georgia who has one loss to the sec champ.

and you lose to Georgia in that one -five matchup or something like that. Is that a disappointment? Yeah, it’s a disappointment, but it’s not like a failure. Like it’s not like a loss. I think it depends on a lot of different variables, notably how the regular season goes and do you beat Michigan and how the rest of the playoff shakes out. if Ohio State loses, Ohio State cannot lose in the campus site games.

Stefan Krajisnik (17:39.734)

Yeah, mean, the illusions are the same.

Andrew (17:59.335)

and they cannot lose in the quarterfinal in my opinion. Like don’t care who you play in the quarterfinal, you can’t lose in the quarterfinal. You gotta make the final four. Like this is a team that is the first or the second best team in college football. You have to act like it, you have to play like it. So I think that is a disappointment, that is a failure if you don’t make the final four. I mean obviously injury is not withstanding or something like that. Like I mean I’m not gonna fault them if you’re playing your quarterfinal game against like eight seed Ole Miss and Will Howard goes down and all of a sudden.

you know, things go haywire and you lose. That’s whatever. but I think you have to have a strong regular season and it just depends on how things play out in that regard. So the answer is kind of, it’s kind of a cop out, but it does depend on, on how this goes. Like if you lose in the, if you lose in the final four, you go 13 and O and you lose in the final four to Florida state who’s making a run and all of sudden they’re a team that started on the road in the first round of playoff and

Florida state goes on a miracle run. That’s probably a disappointment because you should beat Florida state, but we’ll, we’ll have to see. So generally I say, no, it’s not like a, a disappointment. It’s not a failure, but I do want to see what the lead up to that looks like and then who they lose to obviously matters.

Stephen Means (19:14.494)

Anything less than the Final Four is a failure. I’m not in the regular season of beating Michigan. That’s obvious. Yes, you need to beat Michigan. You lost them three years in a row. And then the Big Ten Championship game, I’m probably in the minority here. I’m less concerned about the winner of that game. that conference championship games have essentially become, I get a buy or not games, right? It’s not, I get it. It still matters, but it matters. I’m sorry, but if you’re in your big conference championship game, you’ve already made the playoffs.

So now your plan for feeding and I look man, which is it is what it is. I’m not trying to have a conversation about that. It’s that’s my opinion and I’m not going to change my opinion on that. have lost the conference championship game mattered more when it was a 14 college football player. It matters less in terms of the national championship race. Now that is factual. If you are in the big 10 and in the SEC making the big making the SEC or big 10 championship game, you have already stamped your ticket.

Andrew (19:43.132)

Andrew (19:48.743)

Yeah, I understand,

Andrew (19:58.279)

Stephen Means (20:12.458)

The question is now, do you also now have to play another game in your backyard or not? That’s what it is. That’s factual. So for me, we can’t spend nine months talking about this roster the way we’re talking about it and the world’s talking about it and then they lose in the first round or the quarterfinal. Like that’s not, that doesn’t add up. That’s not how that goes. You can’t have something this loaded and it loses early or it loses its first playoff game, whether that’s in the first round or they get the bye week.

Final four, cause once you get to the final four, it’s the four best teams in the country. And you’re just talking about ball, right? I didn’t look at 2019 where I thought that was the most complete team, Ohio state had had in a while and you lost a Clemson because Chris Olavi broke a route off, right? A football thing. I don’t look at that as a failure, right? It’s cause you’re just playing ball. So once you get to the final four, it’s kind of, I don’t know, man, who makes the most plays, but anything short of a final four,

I’m gonna go like, to an extent, I’m gonna go, well, that was a waste that you reloaded this roster just to lose in a quarterfinal game? Really? Seriously?

Stefan Krajisnik (21:23.786)

Yeah, I think for me, I have to walk away this season. This is going to simplify what Andrew said. I have to walk away this season saying that Ohio State was one of the two best teams in the country. Does that mean that you somehow get the draw where you get Georgia in the semis and you lose to Georgia and at the end of the playoff, saying, Hey, I know Georgia beat Oregon. Yeah, I know. Yeah.

Andrew (21:44.147)

You need a repeat of 2022 where where Ohio State loses. Yeah, yeah. Right, right, exactly. Yeah, yeah.

Stephen Means (21:46.55)

Okay, but that’s that’s the final four though. That’s what I’m saying If they move in the quarterfinal game, are you gonna walk away thinking this is one of the two best teams of college football? That’s my

Stefan Krajisnik (21:55.458)

No, no, no, no. It has to be a semi -final, but even if they make a semi -final and you lose to, like Andrew said, let’s say you lose to the Big 12 champ or something in the semi -final, I’m going to be saying, hey, that was kind of disappointing. think whoever you lose to at the end of season, we’re saying that’s the best team in the country. Maybe it’s Bama. Maybe it’s Georgia. Maybe Bama plays out better than we think it is. At the end of the year, I have to say

They lost in the semi, but they were probably the second best team in the country, if that’s the case. So I think you have to finish with everyone believing that you’re one of the two best teams in the country, even if you lost in the semi final. So all that to say, I think Ohio State was the national championship. I don’t think it’ll be a disappointment in any sense of the word. I just think, listen, I’m big on Georgia. the one who said they get the benefit of doubt to be the preseason number one team.

Carson Beck wins the Heisman. think they’re amazing. But you get to the championship game and you just start rattling off names on both sides. mean, both rosters have some dudes and I think Ohio State might have more dudes. I think they might have more playmakers at key positions than Georgia does. I think ETN is great at Georgia. I think Judkins and Trevon Henderson are better. At least as a two headed monster. I think Carson Beck is great.

I think Will Howard could match him in a game like that. think Georgia’s pretty, I think Georgia’s better at receiver than people are giving them credit for. I think Ohio State is pretty dang good at receiver too. And then you can just start talking about defense and going down this line again. I just think Ohio State with this roster, I just don’t see them losing a national championship game against Georgia. I could see it, but I just, that’s not what I’m predicting. So I think Ohio State.

They lose at Oregon in the regular season and that’s the last game they lose this season.

Stephen Means (23:54.966)

So 15 % of our Texas have Ohio State losing in the national championship game. 77 % have them winning the national championship game.

Stefan Krajisnik (24:02.242)

Wow. I was wondering when our textures would get bullish and I was kind of surprised that the 11 and 1, 12 and 0 thing was like 50 -50. I was like, okay, man, they’re being cautiously optimistic. And then they just went for it, baby. I love it.

Andrew (24:04.251)

Yeah, that’s a little more lopsided than I thought it was going to be.

Andrew (24:17.149)

Cautiously optimistic, yeah.

Stephen Means (24:23.51)

I think everybody’s just all in man. It’s you spent nine months going man. Caleb Downs is on this team. Will Howard’s you’re hearing good. I wonder if we had done this pod before Ryan Day name to start before fall camp happened. I wonder if it would have been 77 % saying they win a national championship and only 15 % saying they lose it. But I think enough people who don’t BS us when it comes to talking about things guys like Denzel Burke. Some of these players are not BSing us about

Will Howard and the way that Ryan Day described the quarterback battle and basically insinuating that it was never even close. Will Howard just kind of ran with it in the fall camp start. I think that mixed with maybe there’s some problems with the offensive line and then you throw in, Caleb Downs is here. Jeremiah Smith is on this roster. Jaxsor, JT Tui, Maloa, Tylek Williams, Denzel Berg, Jordan Hancock, Lathan Ransom, Cody Simon, Emeka, Buka, Trevion Henderson, Donovan Jackson all came back. You have a Quinian Judkins. So it doesn’t feel like Trevion Henderson has to.

carry the entire load by himself. All these variables, you hear that for nine months, I get it, how they got to 77 % of our voters, of our techs, our 61435, all three, three, one, five, ended up saying Ohio State’s gonna win a national championship. I wasn’t thinking about this until you just said it, Stefan, the fact that you picked Carson back to win the Heisman Trophy, but then also losing the national championship game. There are 16 players in college football history who have ever won the Heisman and the national championship.

in the same year. The first one, Davey O ‘Brien, who now has an award named after him, did it at TCU in 1938. Bruce Smith at Minnesota did it in 1940. Angelo Bertelli at Notre Dame, 1943. Doc Blanchard from Army, shout to Army getting the Heisman Trophy winner in 1945. John Lujac at Notre Dame in 1947. Leon Hart at Notre Dame, 1949. Tony Dorsett, Pittsburgh, 1976. Charlie Ward,

Quarter state in 1993, Danny Warfield, Florida quarterback in 1996, Charles Woodson, cornerback at Michigan’s return specialist. I don’t know what to even refer him as, but 1997, Matt Lenhart at USC in 2004. You have Carson Beck, Reggie Bush in it, which is the 2005 year he wins the Heisman Trophy, but loses in the national championship game. Mark Ingram at Alabama in 2009, Cam Newton, one of the greatest quarterbacks in college football history.

Stephen Means (26:49.43)

at Auburn in 2010, Jamis Winston at Florida State in 2013, and then Derek Henry at Alabama in 2015, and then the latest one, Devontae Smith in 2020 at Alabama. I’m predicting that Gualt Howard’s gonna join that list, which is a crazy end to his career. Crazy career arc, Right? Like, crazy career arc.

Stefan Krajisnik (27:13.1)

I think he ends up being the first wrong pick if that happens.

Stephen Means (27:17.248)

So that’s a good point. First round draft picks, Devontae Smith, Derek Henry, Jameson Winston, James Winston, not Jameson, that’s Jameson Williams. James Winston, Cam Newton. I don’t think Mark Ingram was a first round draft pick. Matt Lenard was a first round draft pick though. But do your point. I don’t know about that part. Maybe we can discuss that when we get there. But I just think that would be a crazy career arc for a kid from Downington, Pennsylvania who was rated in like the 800s coming out of high school to go to Kansas State. And it’s like, hey,

Ohio State’s had this long line of elite quarterback play over the past five years, and this is the one who’s going to win the Heisman and win the national championship game. I just think that would be crazy. It would be a fun arc, fun story arc. And again, I’m all about the vibes and I’m all about the storylines here. I think that matters with college football a little bit more than it matters in other sports. So I have Ohio State beating Georgia in the national championship game. And I think it’s, I think it might just come down to two things.

They should have won in 2022, but the defense wasn’t ready to support CJ Stroud the way it needed him. It needed to support him and the key moments of that game. They should have won in 22. And I’m just wondering if this time around I’ve been saying it’s the funnest idea of what if there’s something in Will Howard that has never been able to get unlocked because he’s never been in an environment that unlocks it. And now he’s in that environment. And I’m not saying he’s going to be CJ Stroud. But what I am saying is

He’s efficient. He makes the right decisions. He’s not turning the ball over and he makes a play when it needs to be made. And you mix that with all the talent around him. I’m wondering if Ohio State wins that game 35 to 30. Right. It’s a competitive back and forth game and it might be the only time all year a team scores more than 30 points on Ohio State. Maybe even that that might be high. I might even go 27 to 20.

But like it might be the only time Ohio State gives up more than 20 points all season and we don’t care. We don’t care. It doesn’t change our opinion on this defense. It’s just this is the national championship game and this is how this goes. It’s gonna be competitive.

Stefan Krajisnik (29:24.45)

Or if they win 7 -3 and Will Howard’s terrible, nobody’s gonna care.

Stephen Means (29:28.872)

Nobody’s here. All the stats, all the yards replayed, that stops mattering on January 20th in Atlanta. It does.

Stefan Krajisnik (29:36.224)

And you’re not going to worry about Judkens’ yards per rush if he won the national title.

Stephen Means (29:39.638)

Don’t care. Don’t care. Don’t. That is the one time where I do agree with coaches where it’s like, just get it done. I don’t care what it looks like. And part of the reason why is because back in 2022, when Ryan Day said that we’re going to let it rip tone, that wasn’t just him talking bullish. I actually wrote a story about this ahead of that game. He said, you got to score to win college football, playoff games. You got to score and win national championships. And I looked it up and that was like a thing at one point is like college football, playoff games are played in the forties. It doesn’t matter.

how good the defenses are. has nothing to do with the defenses. It’s just, you’re talking about two elite teams just going at it and throwing haymakers. So it might get high in scoring and we might go, no one’s going to go, these defenses aren’t as good as we think they’re. No, they are. They’re that good. It’s just, these are the best two teams in college football. just, I’m all in on Will Howard and I don’t know why, but I’m just intrigued by the storyline of a guy who has never had this. And now you give him it and he leads Ohio State to a national championship and he wins the Heisman for it. So I have Ohio State.

going 16 and 0. Andrew has him going 16 and 0. Stefan, you have him going, who you have lose to?

Andrew (30:48.893)

Georgia? Yeah.

Stephen Means (30:49.694)

yeah, George, excuse me. I have him going 16 and 0. Stephane, you have him going 15 and 1 and winning the national championship. Andrew, you have him going 15 and 1 and losing in the national championship. think if any of those come to pass, I think that’s a quality season for Ohio State. Obviously, they win the national championship as a quality season. But losing in the national championship, Andrew, I don’t think anybody’s going, is a wasted year.

Andrew (31:12.531)

Sure. Yeah, 100%. Yeah, think, even if, I think again, even if you lose to Georgia, you were saying the, the final four, have to make the final four, it’s not a wasted year or a disappointment or a failure or whatever. Even if you lose to Georgia in that final four, Stefan put it more succinctly than we did where he said, if you have to leave this season with a genuine argument that this was one of the two best teams in the country, because you could make the final four. You can run the table. You can go 13 and 0. You can, you know,

blow whoever you’re to play out of the water in the first game in the in the quarterfinal game. Then you get to the semifinal game and you’re looking at it going, look at this man. We got, you know, number nine Ole Miss or whoever it would be. We got Ole Miss or we got Penn State or we got, you know, Utah. Of course we’re going to beat them and you lose to them. That’s a problem. Then that’s a disappointment because you left something on the table. I think you have to feel like this Ohio State team.

did not leave anything on the table because maybe the only thing that they would would be they didn’t beat the best team in the country. That has to be the way that you approach this season where look, if you’re gonna lose in the final, in the final four, it better be to a team that is right there to win the national championship, either wins the national championship or is right there, right? I don’t think you can kind of exist in this world of just, man, if X had gone right.

Y had gone right and Z had gone right, then we’d be talking about something that that’s not where you need to be. yeah, if Ohio State loses the national championship game to Georgia, successful season, I think I think, you know, it would sting at the time. But I think you can look at that. And not to be cliche, I think you can hold your head high about that season and be like, you know what? Georgia was just that much better, just a little bit better than us. God’s fun.

Stefan Krajisnik (32:44.16)

You you are so -

Stefan Krajisnik (33:02.018)

If you lose in a playoff, can’t be to a Big Ten team though.

Andrew (33:07.155)

Stephen Means (33:07.19)

because it kind of defeats the purpose. I don’t know, man.

Stefan Krajisnik (33:09.09)

right? You can’t go into next season being like, hey, Oregon’s near two in the big 10 and they just beat Ohio State in the playoff and they’re the team that’s not considered the best in the

Andrew (33:10.215)

I mean, it depends about Oregon, but...

Stephen Means (33:19.702)

So, so you’ve officially marked down that for Stefan Krasnik, the last time you play a big 10 team is the most important time you play the big, is the time you’re gonna judge them off the most. Okay.

Stefan Krajisnik (33:31.542)

Yeah. Because if they play a big team in playoff, they’re probably playing them for a second or third time. And if you lose that, like a lot of that falls on coaching. Like playing a team again a second or third time, like a lot of that falls on coaching. And that’s going to, I mean, it’s going to create some pressure whether it’s, whether I think it’s fair or not.

Andrew (33:33.734)

Interesting, yeah that’s my crazy.

Stephen Means (33:53.834)

Rondale always says everything comes down to skiing, personnel and coaching. So I don’t know if I agree with it. I also know we don’t have time to sit here and debate that for another hour and a half. do. I mean, we can one of these days, but I do think it’s a good point of like which one you want to value the most. And it becomes a conversation now that you live in this world, especially that you get to play a rival potentially more than one time. You might even play them back to back weeks, depending on what Michigan looks like on a year to year basis. But those are our official predictions.

Stefan Krajisnik (34:02.54)

You know what are the great coaching philosophies?

Stephen Means (34:21.686)

for the 2024 season, have marked it down. Stat leaders, all Americans, Heisman Trophy, and now we have marked down all of us saying Ohio State gets to the national championship game and wins the Big Ten. Stephon and I have them winning the national championship over Georgia. Andrew has them losing to Georgia in the national championship. They have been marked down. They are in the book. They are on the record. You cannot hide from it. You cannot run from it. Destiny hits all the same. And then come in January.

It’s going to bring it right back to this and we’re going to see who was right and who was wrong. But the season is here. It’s Monday. Ohio State plays in less than six days. We’ll be in the Woody on Tuesday talking with Ryan Day on Wednesday evening. We’ll be talking with players. I think we’re also going to get Will Howard in the coordinators tomorrow as well. And then later this week, big pot coming, big topic coming. I think we’re to do something similar to just like who has the most approved. We’re just trying to big picture it one more time before we get really into the minutia of the season.

And it’s gonna be fun, man. I think T -Sue’s coming back to join us as well. It’s gonna be awesome this year, man. Really excited. Football’s here, baby. Football’s here. We don’t have to do hypotheticals anymore. Ohio State plays Akron on Saturday. Get the text 614 -350 -3315. Two week free trial, which means you would get the first two games of the season before the bye week. Great time to join. Like I said, all off season, there is not a bad time to get the text. I can only tell you why this is a good time to get the text. But then there’s two weeks later, it’s gonna be a good time to get the text. We’ll get the text 614 -350 -33.

Jim Schlossnagle settles into Texas baseball build after roller coaster summer | Golden

Portrait of Cedric Golden

  • Schlossnagle led the Aggies to a 135-62 record and two College World Series appearances in three seasons.
  • Schlossnagle: “When you play in the national championship game, the summer is normally super short, but this has felt really long."

The Texas A&M saga is in the rearview, and new Texas baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle has settled into what he does best.

After a roller coaster summer , when he went from being the most popular sports figure in College Station since Johnny Manziel to public enemy No. 1 in less than 48 hours, Schlossnagle is throwing himself into the craft.

A one-hour visit Friday to the J. Dan Brown Family Player Development Center at UFCU Disch-Falk Field revealed a Schlossnagle who's back to the business of building a winner at a college baseball blue blood.

GOLDEN: Why the dog days of summer matter for Texas football

Ever the planner, he gave me a brief tour of the facility while players were busy taking indoor batting practice. He spoke of one day getting the Disch’s seating capacity to 10,000 seats, and about running with new hitting coach Troy Tulowitzki , and about redoing the locker room and baseball offices — including one honoring legendary UT coach Augie Garrido . And he talked about what's most important: what Texas will face in the SEC, easily college baseball's most dominant conference.

If you haven’t noticed, the SEC has won the past five College World Series titles and six of the past seven.

“Not to disrespect anybody who has had success here in the past, but this SEC thing is real,” Schlossnagle said. “I didn’t think it was until I got there. I’ve only been in it for three years, but yeah, it’s so different.”

How different, Schloss?

“The goal in the SEC is to get 15 conference wins,” he said. “That will get you into the tournament. And if you can get to 16, you have a chance to host. You get to 17, you’re hosting for sure. Last season, five teams finished at 13-17, and four made the NCAAs.”

And you thought Texas' football team will have it rough this year.

GOLDEN: Why Texas' No. 4 preseason ranking matters more than Steve Sarkisian thinks, says

'The program belongs to the players'

Schlossnagle has spoken reverently of those who came before him, including David Pierce — who was fired after the 2024 season, paving the way for athletic director Chris Del Conte to reunite with his former coach at TCU. Schlossnagle took the job knowing the expectations around here, but a conversation he had with Garrido more than a decade ago resonated as he mulled the decision.

“This will never be your program,” the Zen Master told him. “It was never my program. It was (former UT coach Cliff Gustafson’s) program.”

Reason being, Gus played at Texas before he coached here.

“The program belongs to the players,” Schlossnagle said. “This is Roger Clemens’ program.”

THE DETAILS: Inside Texas baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle's contract

The decision that changed everything

Schlossnagle's seven-year contract, which is expected to receive approval this week from the UT System Board of Regents, will pay him $1 million in each of his first two seasons before it balloons to $2.68 million annually in the third year. That would put him atop the list of SEC coaches in salary, barring renegotiations.

Having just turned 54, Schlossnagle looks trim, fit and relaxed. Texas baseball agrees with him, though it wasn’t an easy transition from his former haunt.

There is no other way to put it: The Aggies hate his guts.

It’s been two months since Schlossnagle informed A&M athletic director Trev Alberts that he was leaving to take the Texas job only a couple of days after the Aggies lost to Tennessee in the College World Series championship series.

“When you play in the national championship game, the summer is normally super short, but this has felt really long,” Schlossnagle said.

Over his three seasons in the 979, his Aggies went 135-62 and won the second-most conference series in the SEC, right behind Tennessee, and played in two College World Series.

Schlossnagle felt like a natural at A&M. He embraced the unique traditions on campus. A conversation with football coaching legend Jackie Sherrill inspired him to place the 12th Man in the team program and on full display at Blue Bell Park. They ran horses on the field on opening day. He went to the bonfire. He even attended the school's Silver Taps ceremony, which honors Aggies who have died.

“I gave everything,” Schlossnagle said. “I gave every single thing that I could during the time when I was the coach of the Aggies.”

It felt like a match made in Reveille heaven, especially when Schlossnagle came oh-so-close to delivering the program its first championship in a major men’s team sport since the 1939 football team. But the guano hit the fan in College Station one day later when he left for A&M’s most bitter rival. He could have run for mayor while the team was in Omaha, but his resignation led to a complete 180 in perception.

MORE UT: What Texas volleyball's Madisen Skinner thinks about her chances to play in 2028 Olympics

Social media became a dumpster fire of Schlossnagle insults, and someone even leaked his Venmo handle, predictably leading to some outlandish money requests.

Thankfully, he was able to decompress from it all, spending the first week of August in Southern California, splitting time between Carlsbad and Huntington Beach with a couple of home recruiting visits mixed in.

Schlossnagle has made it no secret that he doesn’t plan to coach into his 70s, so the move to Texas was made with the sort of immediacy that indicates his time is now. He also views Texas’ connectivity between the administration and athletics with Del Conte, Board of Regents Chairman Kevin Elite and UT President Jay Hartzell as vital in what he’s attempting to do here. Simply put, there was too much uncertainty at A&M with an AD who didn’t hire him.

Schlossnagle said that when he left TCU for A&M he and then-Aggies athletic director Ross Bjork had an agreement that Blue Bell Park would be renovated to keep up with schools such as Arkansas, LSU and Ole Miss, which sport some of the nicest facilities in the SEC. After Alberts replaced Bjork, that dynamic changed, from Schlossnagle's perspective.

When asked if he would still be in College Station if another AD were running the show at Texas, Schlossnagle answered, “Yeah.”

It's why he's back with Del Conte, who has assembled a murderers’ row of a coaching roster that’s awash in people who have either won or coached in national championship games or matches. The Horns are arguably the most dominant athletic department in the NCAA, and they are walking into the SEC with plenty of confidence — and the hardware to boot.

“It’s a reckoning,” Del Conte said upon hiring Schlossnagle.

Getting ready for 2025

Relieving Pierce of duty wasn’t easy because the Horns did play in Omaha three times on his watch, but CDC ultimately decided to pull the trigger after the Horns went 36-24, finished third in their final Big 12 season and ended with a loss to Louisiana in the College Station Regional.

Schlossnagle has 46 players in the program at the moment, but that number will have to be whittled down to 40 by the first game. There's talk of reducing college baseball rosters to 34 in coming seasons, and that would place an even greater emphasis on recruiting.

He has been busy rebuilding a pitching staff that posted a 4.97 team ERA, the worst in 25 seasons. He and pitching coach Max Weiner hit the portal and added a pair of right-handers , Arizona State's Thomas Burns and LSU's Aiden Moffett , and junior college left-handers Ethan Walker and Kade Bing also signed. Add Montgomery High School southpaw Bryce Navarre , who flipped his commitment from A&M, and the pieces are there for a pitching revival, especially if returning starter Ace Whitehead successfully recovers from offseason surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, a nerve condition that affects the neck and shoulders.

The biggest news coming out of the offseason was the return of talented shortstop Jalin Flores, who hit .340 last season, along with right fielder Max Belyeu. The sophomore All-Americans hit 18 homers each and will bolster an offense that will be without first baseman and leading hitter Jared Thomas, who went to the Colorado Rockies with the 42nd overall pick in the MLB draft. Catchers Rylan Galvan and Kimble Schuessler are also back.

“I think we have 24 new guys from the portal,” Schlossnagle said. “We tried to hit it pretty hard. The biggest thing was keeping the players here.”

Under the current SEC scheduling format, each school will have two permanent opponents every year, and for Texas, it’s the Aggies and Oklahoma. Opponents for the other eight series will be rotated each year. The full schedule hasn’t been released, but the Horns are slated to play Auburn at home on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday of  Easter weekend.

To hear him tell it, this is Schlossnagle’s last stop. He loved Augie but doesn’t envision a coaching career that will extend another two decades.

So his time is now.

The Horns have the man they believe can lead them back to the top of the heap. He has walked these SEC streets and coached in the visiting dugouts of some of the scariest stadiums in the sport, while coming within a whisker of achieving immortality in College Station.

Somehow, Longhorn Nation is relieved it didn’t happen.

He's a Longhorn now.
