Anti Theft Zippers And Pulls: Everything You Need To Know

Curious about the different kinds of anti-theft zippers and pulls and how they work? Then you are definitely in the right place because this guide will tell you everything you need to know about anti-theft zippers!

Whether you want to keep your luggage safe while traveling or you need something to keep your necessities secure during everyday activities, there’s a great anti-theft bag for you out there. Just keep in mind that no anti-theft zippers can protect your belongings from everyone – the point is to deter thieves so that you have more time to catch them in action!

Types Of Anti Theft Zippers And Pulls

There are many different kinds of anti-theft zippers and pulls and we’ll tell you all about them in this section!

Self-Locking Zippers

Self-locking zippers have a small mechanism that locks the zipper pulls in place. The mechanism can be automatic so that the zippers lock as soon as there’s no pressure on the pullers or pin-based so that small pins lock the zipper pull in place when you lower the tabs.

Self-locking zippers are a good solution for everyday carry bags. You don’t have to walk around with a big padlock on your zipper, but your bag is still somewhat protected from thieves.

The point of self-locking zippers isn’t to keep your stuff ultra-secure, but rather to deter any thieves who might want to try and go through your belongings. They’ll be caught off guard when the zippers don’t open normally, which should give you plenty of time to catch them in action.

The main downside of self-locking zippers is that there’s no actual protection in place. If you come across a thief who can recognize these zippers immediately and knows how to unlock them, it will be as if you’re wearing a backpack with basic zippers.

Lockable Zippers

Lockable zippers are probably the most common in backpacks and luggage. They’re just regular zippers with sliders you can lock in place. When your bag is fully zipped, the two zipper pulls connect with a small hole that’s just big enough to fit a padlock.

That way, a thief can’t unzip your luggage and take anything out without you noticing. This also deters thieves and gives you enough time to catch them in action. You can use whatever padlock you want (as long as it fits in the hole) to lock the two zipper pulls together.

Consider a TSA-friendly padlock for international travel. They’re the best option if you’re concerned about keeping your luggage safe during flying because the TSA can still open your bag and inspect it, but the thieves won’t be able to.

The main downside of lockable zippers is that it is still possible for someone to forcefully open your bag. Even when the zipper pulls are locked, in most cases it is possible to force open a zipper by inserting a ballpoint pen or another sharp object and forcing the zipper teeth apart. The thieves can’t zip up the bag again, so if someone were to tamper with the bag it would be immediately noticeable.

Magnetic Zippers

Magnetic zippers are just zippers that have magnets in their pulls. The pull tabs are drawn to each other, so they’re a bit more difficult to pull apart, but not impossible. That means that a thief can still open your bag, but they won’t be able to do it quickly.

The magnets are naturally drawn to each other, so it takes more force than you might expect to pull the tabs apart. This should deter most thieves, especially those who are trying to get into your bag without you noticing.

Magnetic zippers are often used in anti-theft everyday carry bags, and they’re a decent solution if you’re not worried about thieves too much, but you still want to have some extra protection for your belongings.

Double Coil Zippers

Double coil zippers are zippers that have two coil chains instead of one. A regular zipper (of your pants or jacket) has just one coil chain that is placed inside a zipper puller. A double coil zipper has two of these chains – one goes inside the puller and the other one stays outside.

They’re a lot safer than regular (single-coil) zippers because it’s virtually impossible to force them open with a ballpoint pen. If you are seriously worried about someone getting inside your bags, just make sure that you’re getting luggage with a double coil zipper and you’ll have nothing to worry about.

One thing to note is that double coil zippers are only effective in combination with some sort of zipper pull lock. Whether it’s a classic TSA lock on a suitcase, a padlock, or just self-locking pull tabs – a double coil zipper will keep your luggage protected only if it’s not possible for thieves to unzip the bag without any obstacles.

Zipper Clips

Zipper clips are small anti-theft gadgets that can be used to protect most zippers that have holes in the pull tabs. You attach the zipper clips to these holes and then the two clips lock in place together. It’s still possible to pull them apart, but it takes effort and time that a thief on a crowded train would not have.

Clips are a decent anti-theft solution for luggage and everyday carry bags, but they’re certainly not the safest option out of the bunch. The good thing about them is that they’re not very intuitive to open and it takes some time to figure out how to unlock the zipper. This is great for deterring thieves, but it also means that it will take you a while to get used to them.

The main downside of clips is that they’re practically useless if you are targeted by a thief who knows how to open them.

Do Anti-Theft Zippers And Pulls Really Work?

They do, but not in the way you might be hoping. An anti-theft zipper won’t stop someone who is determined to get inside your luggage, but it can stop random people from tampering with your bag.

The entire point of anti-theft zippers and pulls is to deter thieves who are not expecting any resistance from the zipper. If they are caught off guard, this gives you time to notice that someone is tampering with your bag, which will ultimately stop them. Also, many thieves will just give up when they realize they can’t open your bag with one swift move because they don’t want to get caught.

That being said, keep in mind that none of these zippers and pulls will stop someone who is absolutely determined to get inside your bags.

That’s why you should always pay close attention to your belongings, and if you see someone acting suspiciously, try to get as far away from them as possible. Thieves will often give up when they realize they’ve been made, especially if there is any security or police nearby.

Is Zipperless Luggage More Secure?

In a way, it is. Zipperless luggage doesn’t have any zippers, so it’s harder to break into. Even the best-zippered suitcases can usually be forced open with a ballpoint pen, so it doesn’t matter how many locks you placed on the pulls.

With zipperless luggage, you don’t have to worry about someone destroying the zipper and getting to your valuables. The best zipperless suitcases usually have two TSA-friendly latch locks, which can’t be opened without a lot of effort. The latch locks normally can’t be opened without a proper code or a TSA master key, so it is much harder to force this luggage open.

Aluminum zipperless luggage is some of the safest luggage you can get your hands on. The hard-metal shell is much more difficult to break into than any type of plastic, including PC, so consider a zipperless aluminum suitcase if you need something super secure. Just keep in mind that they don’t come cheap.

Don’t get me wrong – it’s always possible for a thief to break into your luggage if they’re dead set on it. They could rip off the locks or just take a hammer and break your luggage open, but it’s highly unlikely something like that is going to happen. And if you are targeted by a thief who is willing to go that far to get into your luggage, there’s not much you can actually do to protect your belongings.

The Best Anti-Theft Solutions For Zippers And Pulls

None of the solutions we’ve mentioned so far are 100% secure on their own. That’s why it’s important to look for bags that have multiple anti-theft features instead of just one.

First, look for a bag that has double-coil zippers because these are much more difficult to force open than single-coil zippers. Then, look for a way to lock the zipper pulls together – with the double coil zipper, a simple lockable zipper that can be secured with a padlock will do wonders.

Also, look for luggage that has additional anti-theft features, whether it’s slash-proof fabric, a shatter-resistant shell, or even a hidden zipper that can’t be found immediately. All these features are designed to deter thieves so that you have enough time to notice that someone is trying to tamper with your bag.

Alternatively, consider getting rid of zippers altogether and try out a zipperless suitcase. Pick up an aluminum zipperless suitcase if you’re transporting valuables and you want to be absolutely certain that your belongings will be safe from thieves.

Why I Travel With (lots of) Ziploc Bags

Ziploc Bags: The Perfect Travel Aid

Jump ahead to...

Here are 10 reasons why you should buy Ziploc bags before your next trip, too!

Some travelers carry small atomizers filled with their favorite scents; one squirt in a hotel room evokes memories of home. Others swear by inflatable neck pillows that allow them to sleep like babies even when stuck in the middle seat of a crowded airliner.

Yes, I do that, too, but the one thing I absolutely couldn’t do without is my stash of Ziploc bags.

My packing ritual always begins with grabbing boxes of Ziploc bags of different sizes. Here are some reasons why I use these indispensable, featherweight travel aids:

1 – Keep clothes neat

I fold all of my blouses with tissue paper in between the folds and place each one individually in a Ziploc bag.

This keeps each garment remarkably wrinkle-free and clean. I use the same technique for lightweight jackets and sweaters, too. (By the way, slacks and jeans are usually folded in half at the bottom of my suitcase—underneath the bags.)

When I plan to re-wear an item, I return it to the same bag, folded as neatly as it was the first time. I almost fool myself when I take it out again because it looks so fresh—like it was just washed and ironed.

2 – Provide a barrier separating dirty from clean

When the outside pockets can’t accommodate all my laundry, I use jumbo-size Ziploc bags to store dirty clothes and undergarments inside my suitcase.

3 – Make it easier to pack and repack

Travel often involves moving from one destination to another. If there is ample time and room to unpack, I do. It’s more pleasant than living out of a suitcase.

But moving the Ziploc bags from a suitcase to shelves and/or drawers (and doing that in the opposite direction) is far easier when items are bagged rather than loose.

When I bring some items home unused, they are ready to go on my next trip!

4 – Offer security against bringing bedbugs home

If you are bedbug-phobic, you probably cringed when I said that I place clothes in drawers or on wardrobe shelves on hotels or cruise ships.

However, when Ziploc bags are sealed, there is less risk of bringing home bedbugs or other critters—than had you placed belongings in drawers without them.

5 – Protect belongings from liquid spills

Of course, TSA has recognized the beauty of the Ziploc bag with its 3-1-1 policies. But there may be some liquids or sprays you can’t place in your carry-on.

Securing them in Ziploc bags provides insurance that they won’t leak all over your belongings.

Recently, I made the mistake of bringing along a bottle of hair conditioner with a tilt cap. Never again. The pressure of something in my suitcase leaned against it, tilting the cap. The contents poured into the Ziploc but didn’t get anywhere else. Saved by the Ziploc!

The Never-Again Conditioner

6 – Hold bathing suits and damp clothes until you can dry them

If you have ever hand-laundered underwear that didn’t dry by the time you had to check out of your room or have gone swimming the night before packing, you’ll be happy to have a few Ziplocs stowed in your suitcase.

7 – Store foods and leftovers

If you want to bring back part of your half-eaten meal to your hotel room or purchase a snack to bring back to your cruise ship stateroom, Ziploc bags come in handy for storing bread, cheese, fruit, nuts, or whatever else strikes your fancy. (My bags often hold chocolate.)

8 – Keep small things and cords organized

I keep a snack-size Ziploc in my purse to keep my cell phone charger and cord handy.

I can charge the device at an airport (and on some planes) and then return it to its place in the bag, so it doesn’t get tangled up.

9 – Keep dust bunnies away

If you ever had a “dust bunny” appear in sequential photos, you’ll appreciate this tip. Sometimes, placing a camera in your pocket or a cellphone camera exposes it to dust that glomps onto the sensor, which produces a small spot on each and every picture.

Cleaning it off without the right tools or know-how can be difficult so prevention is the best approach. Keeping your camera in a sandwich-size Ziploc can help avoid this vexing problem.

10- They are economical

Based on interviews with food safety experts, a recent post on Simply Recipes addressed the issue of whether or not it was safe to re-use Ziploc bags.

When you are using them for packing and storing clothes, the answer is a no-brainer. But even in the case of foodstuffs, experts saythat it is safe to re-use them with a few limitations. They urge caution when the bags have held raw meat, fish, eggs, or potentially allergy-triggering foods.

You also need to be careful about re-using bags that have previously held wet items (e.g., bathing suits) including toiletries. But by and large, they are durable and it’s economical to use them over and over.

The Bottom Line on Ziplocs

This is NOT a sponsored post. I pay for all my Ziploc bags and have no brand loyalty.

I use Hefty, Glad bags and generic plastic bags as well, whichever brand seems to be on sale. I also recycle/reuse them to cut down on costs and be more eco-friendly.

I’ll never forget my dear mother-in-law, Sadie, who once said to me: “What, you throw out a Ziploc bag? They are meant to last for twenty years!”

Unfortunately, that one had been holding rotten lettuce.

Do you use plastic bags for travel?

Hi Irene, Thanks for reminding me of nine ways to use zip lock bags. I would like to suggest a tenth way. I use the snack size zip lock bags for my daily pill consumption. Each little bag carries one day’s consumption of pills and vitamins. I have found that this saves precious space in the suitcase and/or cartry-on. Pill bottles, or those hard plastic daily pill containers are not as easy to pack. Though Sadie would disapprove, I dispose of each bag after I have taken my daily dose.

Also stick with the name brand zip lock bags. I bought some generic ones in a Dollar Store and yes, they locked, however they did not UNlock. I had to cut them open. Very frustrating!

Love your columns.

I use Ziplocs when I travel…but I never thought of using them to pack clothing. Great idea – thanks!

Dear Irene, Loved your article on packing, particularly since I get to pack and unpack so often due to work travel. Since my recent experience with finding a bedbug in my room, I think the idea of having my clothes in baggies is great – this would have prevented lots of work and angst upon my return home. I had to throw all my things into the dryer and wash what I could. Your articles are always so interesting, practical and helpful! Thank you. Linda L

I do use them for travel. Carry medication in the original bottles with attached label when flying is important, though. TSA can and has taken necessary meds that were just in baggies because they could be anything. Not wanting to go to jail for the Mr.’s diabetic meds, we never take them from the pharmacy bottles.

I use them for hygiene items, always. The toothpaste in one. The toothbrush in another. Hair brush in one. Etc. it keeps me from cleaning them constantly and eliminates the possibility of them contaminating anything else not bagged.

Great article!

Thanks for adding the warning about keeping medication in original containers, Jo!

Could be a good idea to keep each medication vial in a separate snack-size baggie (unless you have child-resistant caps)—could certainly prevents spills!

Best, Irene

Damp bathing suit in a plastic bag equals heavy stinking garment when you unpack. No way! Use your hair dryer on it and discreetly carry it in a mesh bag.

Just until you have time to wash it or dry it! Good idea about the hair dryer but I prefer plastic to mesh!

Love the reminder of the ziplock bags, thanks for that, I have used them in the past, but had forgotten. never thought about bedbugs before, as I always try and unpack, so will remember that tip.

Sadie was a beautiful bride!

I ALWAYS travel with Ziplock bags as well. My stash never leaves my suitcase unless I had a spill but as soon as they dry out, they’re back in the suitcase. In addition to ziplock, I’ve got bags from Canada customs and laundry bags from every hotel I’ve stayed at.

Thanks for that great post! I myself found ziplock bags very, very useful on my travels so far and I will most definitely take some with me when my journey to Asia starts in December. I didn’t use them for clothes though but I try it out!

Thx again and have a sunny day!

I’ve been using ziplock bags for years when traveling. They keep everything safe from spills. I haven’t used them for clothing, though. Interesting tip!

I never once thought about packing with Ziplocs and am amazed by all your commenters who do it routinely. I’m going to go to Target and get a stash of cheap Ziplocs and try this packing tip for my next trip. My husband refuses to pack until 30 minutes before we leave so I can’t imagine he’ll be joining me in the zen of Ziploc packing. (-:

Yes, it does take a bit of extra time but I think it’s well worth it!

Hi Irene, I have used the plastic bags for years when traveling and rarely throw them out (they can be recycled, though, with other plastics). Most of my trips are short and domestic, so I never put clothes in a dresser drawer in a hotel room. It also makes it quicker to keep the bags and clothes in your luggage in case you want a late breakfast, a last-minute trip to the fitness center or a late swim before you have to check out. (I always think checkout times are TOO early, but maybe it’s because I’m a night owl and late riser!) The ziplock bags also keep dirty shoes and sneakers from coming into contact with clothes. I pack my lighter sweaters or blouses in small, light mesh bags about the size of a folded-up blouse. They’re TIDY TOTES from a company called Blink. They’re like the large-size mesh laundry bags. The dollar stores used to sell the small mesh bags 4 for $1 and I also bought them as a gift for traveling friends.

Regarding preventing spilled liquids in your suitcase, I take 2 preventative measures: 1) I use 3M strapping tape (the type you use to seal a box for shipping) and I seal every bottle I bring with strapping tape(even tilt caps). 2) Then I load all those little bottles into a toiletries carrier I got from Mary Kay years ago that has 4 zippered plastic pouches which roll up & velcro together to cushion each other. Since doing this I have only had 1 bottle come open & it just spilled into the plastic pouch which I was able to wipe out later. I now carry strapping tape (as well as baggies)with me in my suitcase so that I can strap all the bottles back up again when I am ready to travel home. It takes a little time but saves lots of hassles later. I also use baggies for all sorts of things when packing including most of the uses you list above (going to try it on clothes now though). Thanks for the great tips.

Thanks for adding the tip about the strapping tape, BJ. Don’t you feel great when you catch a spill in a bag—compared to what could have been? Best, Irene

Just curious as to what size zip lock you use for your tops, blouses and sweaters. Are gallon bags a good size; freezer or storage? Thanks for all the tips. I use zip lock for many of my travel needs, but I have never used them for clothes. I have heard that plastic in general, i.e., bags from the dry cleaners help prevent wrinkles, so I am going to try the zip lock for my clothes. Do you think they will help the wrinkles on my face?!!

I use the freezer size because it takes less time to put things in and out than the gallon size. Wish it worked for face wrinkles! Let me know when you find the solution to that one:-) Best, Irene

I’m really late on this post! I don’t travel much but I also travel with zip-loks and use them for a lot of the same reasons you mention. I also buy whatever brand is cheapest as I’ve never seen a difference.

Love the clothes folding idea. I never knew the bags could prevent wrinkling.

Once you start, it’s positively addicting!

Just read an excellent travel tip on SmarterTravel . . . use a gallon size zip-lock to line the airline seatback pocket (You know, the one where people put glasses, used tissues, Kindles, dirty diapers, food and trash?) in front of you. Keep your stuff handy and clean during the flight and toss the zip-lock at the end of the flight.

If you’ve ever jammed a bunch of excess cargo into a suitcase and forced the zipper closed, you know that zippers can break and leave you stuck without a usable suitcase. Suitcases with zippers can be an easy target: if a thief is determined, they’ll get inside a piece of zippered luggage way more easily than a suitcase with latches and combination locks in place of zippers. Zipperless luggage pieces are often constructed from aluminum or polycarbonate hardside shells for durable, rugged protection that deters break-ins. They also have a sleek, stylish aesthetic that many travelers can appreciate.

To uncover the best zipperless luggage,  Travel + Leisure editors tested suitcases in our New York City lab, where the team packed them full to determine how spacious they felt (especially since zipperless luggage isn’t very flexible), wheeled them through obstacle courses to see how portable the wheels and size of the luggage were, threw them off tables, and hit them with baseball bats to make sure they could withstand rough baggage handlers. For carry-on suitcases, we built a mock airplane set, where we wheeled the suitcases down aisles and lifted them into overhead bins to make sure they weren’t too heavy.

Our top picks include a range of varied options in carry-on and checked sizes. Ahead, find the zipperless luggage pieces that suit you best.

Best Overall

Samsonite tru-frame carry-on spinner.

This compact carry-on is lightweight and stylish, with a nice amount of pockets inside to help with packing.

The capacity is on the smaller side, so you'll likely need to bring along a personal item or a checked bag.

After testing so many bags, we found that a fair number of the zipperless options are made with aluminum, which can get heavy quickly. That's why we loved this lightweight Samsonite carry-on stood out so much — the polycarbonate exterior keeps it lightweight, weighing only 7.5 pounds, making it so easy to travel with. The shell feels thick and durable, withstanding our baseball bat hits like a champ without any dents, and the latches were unaffected when we directly hit them with the metal baseball bat.

One thing to note is that this bag is on the smaller side for a carry-on, better suited for when you want to pack light or need a supplemental bag in addition to a weekender or a checked suitcase . Though it's not a large bag, this carry-on has a nice amount of pockets, zippered compartments, compression straps, and even a mini hanger inside to help with packing. We found it supereasy to maneuver the suitcase through our obstacle course thanks to smooth wheels, a handle with four height options, and the large side handle that makes it easy to lift the bag into an overhead bin or the trunk of a car. The wheels and handle feel durable and sturdy, even after we threw the bag off a counter so that the wheels hit the floor at different angles.

Best Checked

Away the large: aluminum edition.

This 95.1-liter bag is so spacious, and the heavy-duty aluminum shell would protect essentially anything inside.

This suitcase can get heavy quickly if you pack it full since it already weighs 16 pounds on its own.

Since zipperless luggage isn’t expandable, overpackers are going to need ample space, and this checked bag has plenty of room inside. When we tested Away luggage , we found this aluminum suitcase as spacious and stylish as can be, paying particular attention to how smoothly it rolled over different types of flooring despite its size and weight. The bag does weigh 16 pounds on its own, so you just have to be wary that you may hit your airline’s weight limit quicker than other bags. The exterior is aluminum , so it does dent somewhat easily, but it also will likely protect the contents inside because of how durable it is. We thought the interior felt high-quality as well, with some of the sturdiest dividers we’ve seen. While the price is higher than many other bags on this list, we feel this bag is worth it due to its sleek appearance, large capacity, and overall durability.

The Details: Checked suitcase | 29 x 20.5 x 12.5 inches | 16 pounds | 95.1-liter capacity | 4 dual spinner wheels | Aluminum shell

July Trunk Set

This sleek, glazed luggage set comes with one carry-on trunk and one larger checked trunk, both of which held up well during our durability tests.

Although the wheels rolled smoothly on four wheels, they required just a little extra effort on two wheels.

This splurge-worthy set comes with two trunks : one for carrying onto the plane cabin with you and one for checking. The set looks sleek and oh-so-chic with a crush-proof polycarbonate shell and two latching locks apiece. We tested both pieces of luggage in our New York City lab, and we were pleasantly surprised at how the glossy exterior had no dents after we threw it multiple times off tables and hit it with a metal baseball bat. After long-term testing, we noticed the lighter colored bags do tend to get covered in black scuff marks when you check them at the airport, but it's easy to wipe them off. We also love how the handles have customizable height options so you can adjust them to any height you want, making it more comfortable to pull the suitcase than if the handle only had one set height. It was easy to maneuver the trunks through our obstacle course and over different materials like carpet and concrete pavers, although we noticed they rolled more smoothly on four wheels and slowed down just a little bit on two wheels.

Zero halliburton classic aluminum 3.0 international carry-on 33l.

This ultradurable carry-on is an investment piece built to last a lifetime.

The buckled dividers inside aren’t highly functional, and we wish there were more pockets and organization.

This Zero Halliburton suitcase is as solid as it looks — in fact, T+L testing editor Jackie Cucco says it’s one of the most durable bags she’s ever tested. Aluminum is very protective — a fair tradeoff for the added weight. “Not only did it hit the outer shell multiple times with a metal baseball but, but I even hit the handles and latches, and they were so strong that I felt like the bat would break before any part of the bag would break,” Cucco says.

Each side in the interior of this straightforward carry-on features a flat compression divider with two large zippered pockets. You can buckle the flat dividers down to hold items in place, and they serve as a compression board, too, though you won’t be able to buckle them if you have too much packed inside. Some people may prefer the Tumi carry-on on this list for higher levels of organization to help you pack more artfully.

We love that the main handle on this bag has six height options, while the smaller grab handles have a cool auto-return feature that makes them fall back slowly and silently into the original position when you let go of them. While the weight of the bag makes it a little clunky to maneuver, it’s a fair trade-off for the rock-solid durability.

Best With Removable Battery

Arlo skye the frame carry-on: polycarbonate edition.

This carry-on comes with a portable charger so you can keep your phone's battery energized.

We wish the bag’s grab handle was larger and more flexible to make it easier to pull the bag out of overhead bins.

Though this Arlo Skye suitcase has an aluminum frame, it has a polycarbonate exterior that makes it pretty lightweight. We packed this carry-on full and lifted it into overhead bins on our T+L airplane, and it never felt too heavy. We did think that the top grab-handle was a little too close to the bag, making it more difficult than usual to fit our hand in when trying to take the bag out of the overhead bin. However, the zippers, wheels, and handles all worked smoothly, and we were able to maneuver the bag well through our obstacle course full of bystanders like you would find at a real airport. We also love how the suitcase comes with a removable charger, an adapter, and a USB-C cable so you can make sure your devices are charged at any time, even when all of the airport outlets are occupied.

Best Splurge

Tumi international carry-on.

This suitcase is an investment, but the elegant look, high-quality materials, and organizational features make it worth it.

Scratches can compromise the artful appearance of this piece, so we'd avoid checking it whenever possible.

With this sleek suitcase, you are paying for the Tumi label , but this bag is worth the splurge. The striking craftsmanship makes it one of those statement-making pieces like a Rimowa bag — but with superior organization. It features two TSA integrated combination locks that open with the push of a button, plus protective bumpers, and retractable top and side carry handles.

With a 31-liter capacity, the bag was on the smaller size for a carry-on, but it’s easy to pack given the built-in organization and has plenty of space for a long weekend trip (even more with packing cubes and thoughtful organization). Both halves of the suitcase have fully zippered closures and compression straps to keep your clothing in place. “This is an ideal combo because you can use the compression straps to get the contents as tightly packed as possible, and put less strain on the zippers when you ultimately close the bag,” says T+L associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker , who tested this bag in the lab.

The suitcase also held up impressively well against our durability testing — with just one little dent in one corner from a direct baseball bat hit. We'd recommend you avoid checking this bag to keep it from getting too dented or scratched.

Carl Friedrik Trunk

This elegant trunk stood out in our testing for its brilliantly designed interior organization system.

The trunk seems too heavy for its own wheels when packed full.

This luxe Carl Friedrik Trunk is an exceptionally well-organized piece of luggage. It comes with its own packing cubes in three different sizes and has two collapsible dividers in the main compartment so you can easily personalize your own level of organization. Despite its whopping 90-liter capacity, this trunk is sure to keep everything in place through even the roughest travels and baggage handling given its thoughtful organizational systems. “As I tested this trunk, I kept thinking how well everything would be kept in place through even the roughest travels and baggage handling,” says updates editor Hillary Maglin .

While it is large and heavy (weighing 13.6 pounds), it didn't feel cumbersome to roll around because its silhouette is tall and thin rather than wide and bulky. That said, we found it was easier — and felt significantly lighter — to maneuver on two wheels than four. The handle felt plenty sturdy to support the bag without any wobbling or shaking. The outside of the trunk did also get some serious scuff marks when we hit it with a baseball bat, so be prepared for it to get beat up during transit (it adds character!).

Best for Long Trips

Monos hybrid check-in large.

The 97-liter capacity makes this the most spacious suitcase on this list.

We wish the latches were made with a sturdier material.

This is a large suitcase that would be ideal if you’re heading out on a long trip and need a ton of space: you could easily pack two weeks' worth of clothing and still have room for souvenirs. To fit even more, the Y-shaped compression straps are adjustable and great for packing down items. The organizational features instead will help you stay organized, including compression straps, a divider, pockets, and removable pouches that are convenient for wet bathing suits or laundry items.

Despite its size, this suitcase moved through our obstacle course effortlessly — the wheels glided with no resistance, and it was just as easy to pull on carpet as it was on hard floor. “The one disappointment was that when I stepped up onto the concrete pavers, the bottom of the suitcase scraped against it,” says senior editor Jasmine Grant . “I think the wheels should have been larger because it is such a large suitcase, and the extra height is needed.”

The suitcase held up well to our bat and drop tests, though one of the latches came slightly undone when we threw the bag off a table — though we didn’t lock the latches, so this is a problem you could easily solve. However, we would feel more secure if the latches were made of a sturdier material like metal rather than a hard plastic.

The Details: Checked suitcase | 30 x 21 x 11 inches | 13 pounds | 97-liter capacity | 4 dual spinner wheels | Polycarbonate shell

Most Stylish

Steamline the illustrator carryon.

Its whimsical interior and exterior prints recall the glamorous days of Pan Am and are sure to make you stand out at the airport.

Avoid checking this delicate carry-on at all costs.

If you’re looking to channel the glamorous days of Pan Am, look no further than the this whimsical carry-on from Steamline. Its exterior is wrapped in pastel pink stripes, while the interior is printed with a wildflower design by Irish artist Lauren Taylor. The suitcase opens like a book, with the top half featuring a zippered pocket that you can use to pack smaller items like socks, underwear, and electronics. It's main half, which we found could pack all of our essentials, features a removable divider pad with two additional zippered pockets and a detachable door-hanger wash bag. The carry-on also comes with a protective nylon ripstop cover, printed with the interior's same wildflower theme, that you can fold into a handy little pouch when not in use. When you stretch it over the suitcase to protect it from scuffs and marks, the pouch transforms into a front pocket.

While it only has two wheels, we noticed that they suitcase glided surprisingly smooth. Overall, the carry-on is fairly heavy, clocking in at around 9 pounds when empty, and it's on the smaller side, so it's not the most practical for a longer trip. Though it survived our baseball bat hits during testing, we would avoid checking this bag because it feels more fashionable than durable, like it could easily dent if heavy bags were placed on top of it or if it was thrown down the tarmac. While it's one of the more expensive items on our list, it scores major brownie points for being one of the most stylish suitcases we've seen yet.

The Details : Carry-on | 20 x 14.5 x 6.5 inches | 8.8 pounds | 2 wheels | Japanese pasco fibraboard

We've tested so many pieces of luggage that there are some other pieces we can recommend for some travelers, although they weren't quite suited for our main list.

Solegaard Carry-on Closet Original : We appreciated this suitcase's organizational features, including a built-in closet system with slots for shoes and a USB charging port. Ultimately we docked points based on the carry-on's lack of maneuverability, and we wish it was easier to roll around.

More Zipperless Luggage Options

Although we haven’t yet tested these suitcases in our lab yet, we think these additional pieces of zipperless luggage have standout features worthy of your consideration.

Coolife Aluminum Frame Luggage : This checked suitcase is visually appealing, budget-friendly, and made to last. Inside is a thoughtfully designed organizational system for tidy packing, with built-in mesh pockets and carrying bags.

Cluci No-zipper Carry-on : This carry-on bag is lightweight, affordable, and looks cool. This spinner luggage is made of lightweight polycarbonate and a rugged aluminum frame with reinforced corners.

Luggexx 28-inch Polycarbonate : This checked luggage is attractive, durable, and smooth rolling. You can open and close it with a single press of the latches, and it has a three-year warranty.

Level8 Gibraltar Aluminum Carry-on Luggage : This carry-on is made with aerospace-grade aluminum magnesium alloy with dual TSA-approved locks; slow-release handles; and ultrasmooth, 360-degree durable spinner wheels for effortless movement.

Our T+L team has tested more than 500 pieces of luggage in our New York City lab, and for this article, we curated a list of our favorite zipperless suitcases that performed well during testing. During our tests, we weigh the bags, then assess the maneuverability, portability, capacity, durability, and value. We pack each bag with a consistent packing list to see what the capacity looks like in real-world scenarios and to assess organizational features like pockets, zippered interior sections, and compression straps.

To see how the bags would perform in a real-life setting, we rolled them multiple ways and on multiple surfaces (including carpet and uneven terrain) and rolled them through an obstacle course complete with traffic cones. We recreated an airplane in the lab to hoist them into overhead bins, seeing how light or heavy they felt and whether the side handles were comfortable or functional. We also put these bags through rigorous durability testing — including pushing them off a countertop multiple times and even hitting them with a baseball bat to see how easily they scratch, dent, or break altogether.

We also test each bag on our real-world travels for an additional six months after our lab testing to make sure they perform as well on actual planes, trains, and cars as they do in our controlled environment. The luggage pieces with the best feedback made the cut for this roundup, and we will continue to update this article as we test new bags.

Tips for Buying Zipperless Luggage

Choose the right size for your needs.

As with any luggage purchase, consider your usage before settling on a size. How much cargo do you need to haul, and do you plan to check it in or carry it on a plane? If you plan to go carry-on only, check your airline and route’s specific requirements for maximum luggage size. You should also check the weight of the suitcase as many zipperless options come in aluminum, which can get heavy quickly, and you'll want to get a suitcase you'll be able to lift into the overhead bins on a plane if needed.

Consider organizational features

Zipperless suitcases don't have the same flexibility as ones with zippers because the latches make them more rigid — meaning you can't really overstuff or overpack them. That means you'll want to be more thoughtful with your packing, and that's where organizational features come in. With zipperless suitcases, all of the organizational features are generally found on the inside. Look for zippered or mesh interior pockets, dividers, compression straps, and even extras like included laundry bags . While the cases on our list are all free from external zippers, many contain internal zippers for the purposes of organization.

Read the warranty

Luggage is subject to serious wear and tear on the road, and — especially if you’ve invested at a higher price point — you want to make sure your investment goes the distance. Some luggage comes with warranties against manufacturer defects or other damage. Make sure you read the specifics of the policy to understand its length and limitations. Most warranties will only be valid if you purchase your suitcase from the manufacturer as opposed to a third-party seller.

Frequently Asked Questions

While many suitcases close with exterior zippers, zipperless luggage pieces instead use one or more latches, which you can typically lock using a code or a key. Some people prefer traveling with this style of luggage because it’s harder for thieves to get into and also less likely to break. It also has a stylistic appeal.

Many zipperless luggage pieces are made of aluminum or have an aluminum frame, which is extremely durable but heavy. Others are made of polycarbonate, which can be more lightweight. Zipperless luggage typically features a hardside exterior.

Zipperless luggage, like aluminum suitcases , is safer than many zippered softside suitcases because it is outfitted with secure latches and rigid hardside shells, which makes it harder to break into. Thieves can sometimes slash through zippers, but it's going to be a lot more difficult to break into a latch.

What Size Ziploc Bags for Air Travel

Lily Hurtado

Are you planning a trip by air and want the freedom to pack your own toiletries? Wondering what size Ziploc bags you should use to comply with TSA regulations? Look no further! In this article, we’ll guide you through the size restrictions and regulations for carry-on baggage, as well as provide recommendations on the perfect Ziploc bag sizes. With our tips for packing and organizing, you’ll be able to travel hassle-free and enjoy your journey with peace of mind.

Key Takeaways

  • Liquids in carry-on luggage must be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).
  • All containers must fit into a single quart-sized ziploc bag.
  • Quart-sized bags meet TSA requirements and allow hassle-free travel with essential liquids and gels.
  • Packing and organizing with ziploc bags can help keep belongings organized and easily accessible during travel.

Size Restrictions and Regulations

You’ll need to make sure that the size of your ziploc bags comply with the current regulations for air travel. As someone who values freedom, it’s important to be aware of these restrictions so you can pack efficiently and avoid any unnecessary hassle at the airport. Most airlines require that liquids in your carry-on luggage be stored in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters), and all those containers must fit into a single quart-sized ziploc bag. This means you’ll want to double-check the size of your ziploc bags before heading to the airport, ensuring they meet these requirements. By doing so, you’re embracing your freedom to travel without any unnecessary delays or inconveniences caused by non-compliant bag sizes.

Carry-On Baggage Rules

Make sure to check the rules for what you can bring in your carry-on when flying. It’s important to know what items are allowed and what size restrictions apply. When it comes to your carry-on baggage, freedom is key. You don’t want to be burdened by unnecessary limitations. Thankfully, most airlines allow you to bring a quart-sized ziploc bag for your liquids and gels. This means you have the freedom to pack all your toiletries without worry. Just remember that each liquid or gel item must be in a container of 3.4 ounces or less. So, grab that ziploc bag and fill it with confidence, knowing that you’ve got everything you need for your journey ahead. Traveling should be about freedom and convenience, so make sure to pack smartly within the given guidelines!

TSA Guidelines for Liquids and Gels

Ensure that you’re aware of the current TSA guidelines for liquids and gels while traveling. It’s important to know what you can and can’t bring with you on the plane. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

Liquids and Gels:

All containers must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or smaller.

They should all fit comfortably in a single quart-sized ziploc bag.

Exceptions:

Prescription medications and baby formula are allowed in larger quantities.

Duty-free liquids purchased at the airport can also exceed the limit as long as they are properly sealed.

Recommended Ziploc Bag Sizes

The current TSA guidelines specify that all containers for liquids and gels should comfortably fit in a quart-sized bag. So, when it comes to choosing the right Ziploc bag size for air travel, you want to make sure it meets these requirements. The quart-sized bag is the ideal choice because it allows you to carry your essential liquids and gels without any hassle at security checkpoints. It gives you the freedom to bring along your favorite shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and other personal care items without worrying about them being confiscated. Plus, with a quart-sized bag, you can easily see what’s inside and keep everything organized. So next time you pack for your trip, remember to grab a quart-sized Ziploc bag for stress-free travel!

Tips for Packing and Organizing With Ziploc Bags

When packing for a trip, it’s important to remember that Ziploc bags can be incredibly useful for organizing your belongings. Here are some tips to help you pack and stay organized with Ziploc bags:

  • Use gallon-sized bags for larger items like shoes or bulky clothing. This will keep them separate from the rest of your luggage and prevent any dirt or odors from spreading.
  • Pack smaller items like socks, underwear, or accessories in quart-sized bags. This way, you can easily find what you need without rummaging through your entire suitcase.
  • Don’t forget about the handy snack-sized bags! They are perfect for storing small toiletries like travel-sized bottles of shampoo or conditioner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Bring an Empty Ziploc Bag Through Airport Security?

Yes, you can bring an empty Ziploc bag through airport security. It’s a convenient option for carrying liquids and gels in your carry-on baggage. Just make sure it meets the size requirements set by the airline.

Are There Specific Brands of Ziploc Bags That Are Recommended for Air Travel?

When it comes to ziploc bags for air travel, it’s not about specific brands. What matters is the size. Make sure your bag is quart-sized and meets the TSA guidelines for liquids.

Can I Use a Larger Ziploc Bag if I Only Have a Few Small Containers of Liquids and Gels?

You can use a larger Ziploc bag if you only have a few small containers of liquids and gels. However, it’s important to make sure that the bag is still within the airline’s size restrictions.

Are There Any Restrictions on the Number of Ziploc Bags I Can Bring in My Carry-On Luggage?

You are free to bring as many Ziploc bags as you need in your carry-on luggage. However, be mindful of the size restrictions for liquids and gels within each bag.

Factors to Consider When Choosing the Best Travel Lock for Backpacking

Several factors need consideration when selecting the best travel lock for backpacking. First and foremost, ensure that the lock is TSA-approved. This guarantees that airport security can open and inspect your luggage without damaging the lock, avoiding potential issues during your travels.

Another factor to keep in mind is the lock type. Key locks, while offering increased security, come with the risk of losing the same key and being unable to access your belongings. Combination locks provide keyless convenience, but may be more susceptible to picking. Evaluate your needs and preferences to determine which lock type is most suitable for you.

Finally, the lock’s durability and material should also be taken into account. Locks made from robust materials, such as steel, are more resistant to tampering and can withstand the rigors of travel. Avoid locks made from rubber or plastic, as they are less secure and may not provide the desired level of protection for your belongings.

Understanding TSA Approval and Its Importance

The Transportation Security Administration grants TSA approval as a designation for tsa approved luggage locks used on luggage during air travel. This approval is significant because it ensures that a TSA agent can open and inspect your luggage using their master keys without damaging the lock or your possessions.

There are various types of TSA-approved locks available, such as combination locks, cable locks, and classic keyless locks with card access. Each type has its pros and cons, hence the need to choose wisely the one that best fits your needs and preferences.

To identify a TSA-approved lock, look for the red diamond-shaped Travel Sentry logo on the lock’s packaging. This logo indicates that the lock complies with TSA security standards and can be opened by TSA agents without causing harm to the lock or your belongings.

Lock Types: Key vs Combination

Key locks and combination locks are the most prevalent types of luggage locks available, with some of the best locks in the market belonging to these categories. Key locks require a physical key to unlock, providing increased security at the cost of convenience.

The primary disadvantage of key locks is the risk of losing the key, rendering the locking mechanism useless or requiring destructive means to access your belongings.

Combination locks, on the other hand, operate using a sequence of numbers to open. These locks offer keyless convenience but may be more susceptible to picking. While combination locks may be less secure than key locks, they can be a more convenient option for backpackers who don’t want to worry about losing a key.

When choosing between key and combination locks, consider your specific needs and preferences. Here are some factors to consider:

A high-quality key lock will generally provide more security

A combination lock offers greater convenience

Assess the level of security you require

Consider the likelihood of losing a key

By considering these factors, you can determine the best option for your travels.

Importance of Durability and Material in Travel Locks

The durability and material of a travel lock are significant considerations in determining the level of security and protection it provides. A lock made from robust materials, such as stainless steel or brass, is more difficult to break and can withstand the rigors of travel. In addition, durable locks are more resistant to wear and tear, ensuring they maintain their functionality even in extreme conditions.

Avoid rubber and plastic when choosing a travel lock, as these are less secure and may not provide the desired level of protection. Opt for locks made from high-strength materials to ensure that your lock can withstand attempts to tamper or break it.

Durability and material should be at the top of your list when choosing a travel lock to guarantee that your lock offers the necessary level of security and can endure the challenges of traveling. This investment in a high-quality lock will provide peace of mind and safeguard your belongings throughout your backpacking adventures.

Balancing Price and Quality in Travel Locks

It’s important to strike a balance between price and quality when choosing a travel lock. While low-cost locks may seem appealing, they may not provide the level of protection and durability required to keep your possessions safe. High-quality locks may be more expensive, but they offer superior security and longevity, making them a worthwhile investment.

Avoid extremely cheap options when selecting a travel lock, as these may be more easily broken or picked, leaving your possessions vulnerable to theft. It’s essential to strike a balance between affordability and quality to ensure that you’re investing in a reliable travel lock that meets your needs without exceeding your budget.

To conclude, take into account the various factors outlined in this guide when selecting the best travel lock for your backpacking adventures.

Factors To Consider

Balancing price and quality

By considering these factors, you can make an informed decision and enjoy peace of mind throughout your travels, knowing your valuables are safe.

In summary, choosing the right travel lock for your backpacking adventures is crucial to ensuring the safety of your belongings. By considering factors such as TSA approval, lock types, durability, material, and striking a balance between price and quality, you can make an informed decision and select the best lock for your needs.

As you embark on your next backpacking journey, remember that investing in a high-quality, reliable travel lock is an essential step toward protecting your possessions and enjoying peace of mind throughout your travels. Happy trails!

Customer Testimonials

I have used module master on 2 occasions for my 2004 Chevy Suburban. The first time for the ABS module and the second time for the instrument cluster. In both cases both were repaired and returned quickly, both worked perfectly. I recommend module master without any reservations! Mike D. / Long Beach, CA
I sent Module Masters an instrument cluster to get repaired that had an ignition off draw which was not the normal gauge problems that GM clusters have. They fixed it and rebuilt it and it is working great now. I couldn’t be happier!! They have great communication and very knowledgeable. THANKS!! Jesse K. / K-Tech Automotive
You folks have found the right blend of customer service and quality workmanship at a reasonable price. American trained craftsmen are the only way to go for us in this segment of the auto parts repair industry. ABS Automotive | San Mateo, CA
My motorcycle ABS unit quit. Bought a used one off the web, sent to Module Master, they sent it back with the note that it was in perfect working order with NO Charge. I installed it and it works! How wonderful to experience old school customer service, honesty, and integrity. I am sending the faulty one for repair today! Awesome! Wonderful! Stuart D. | Atlanta, GA
Just a short note to thank Gavin and his team at Module Masters. Just received my second front seat ECU module for my Bentley, fully restored to original operating condition. Incredibly fast service and a massive saving over new factory parts, I literally saved hundreds of dollars!! I highly recommend Module Master and will certainly use their services again for future projects. Ken W.
