The cruise port of Progreso (in Mexico) boasts a superior number of cultural attractions such as the Mayan ruins of Chichén Itzá, Dzibilchaltun, and Uxmal; and the colonial city of Mérida located around 26.84 miles (43.2 km) south of the port.

There are also a few other pleasant things nearby for cruise visitors to do such as enjoying a day on a beach, horseback riding, kayaking, snorkeling, or sightseeing.

Progreso is a regularly visited cruise port of call in the West Caribbean itineraries during the Fall and Winter seasons, with as many as 472,000 passengers and over 146 cruise ship visits in 2019.

The cruise port in Progreso has a pleasant ambiance, the area is neat and well kept. For the most part, Progreso is safe but advisable to use caution in crowded areas. The local population tends to be good-natured, polite, helpful and speak English reasonably well. For those cruising with families , there are a quite few fun things to do. Cruise passengers with disabilities or with walking difficulties will not find it too challenging to wander around in Progreso on your own.

Where is Progreso and the cruise port

Progreso, a small port city with a population of around 54,000, is strategically located in the Yucatán state, on the lovely North coast of Mexico, on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico, 534.3 miles (859.8 km) South of Louisiana (USA).

Cruise ships dock on a 1,000 foot (330 meters) long pier with berths for up to 2 vessels to moor . At the end of this pier there is a modern terminal building with most basic services and amenities. The pier where cruise ships dock is perpendicular to the world's longest pier, known as Terminal Remota, which is around 4 miles (6.44 km) long.

Shuttle bus in Progreso

The cruise port in Progreso has a shuttle bus generously provided by the port authority. The shuttle bus will be parked just outside the cruise terminal, and the drop-off is at the Auto Progreso main bus station right in the town center. The shuttle bus is free, typically takes around 15 minutes, and runs every 20 minutes.

Things to do in Progreso cruise port

The port of Progreso is a singular port for cruise travelers interested in archeologic and historic sites. After all, this is the best port to explore the Mayan ruins of Chichén Itzá - one of the most famous UNESCO heritage sites - or the colonial city of Mérida.

Cruise passengers who typically prefer to explore on your own will find it easy to meander on foot around Progreso. Cruise visitors will only find a few shops in Progreso, but there a few convenient places to buy local souvenirs and regional crafts.

• Chichén Itzá archeological site  UNESCO Heritage site. Highlights:  Kukulkan Pyramid, Warriors’ Temple, circular observatory known as El Caracol. Distance from cruise port:  102 miles (164 km).

• Izamal Town and Archeological Site  Smaller but older town than Mérida, Izamal (known as the Yellow City) has a wonderful quaint character and a couple of archeological ruins to visit. Distance from cruise port:  69.9 miles (113 km).
• Flamingos and Xcambó  Near the archeological site of Xcambó visitors will watch hundreds of wide-winged flamingos. Distance from cruise port:  27.2 miles (43.8 km).
• Progreso Beach, Malecón and Craft Market  Cruisers will not find any landmarks or cultural sites in Progreso City. However, the beach is a delight and has nice restaurants along the Malecón. The Craft Market is worth a visit on the way to the beach. Distance from shuttle bus drop-off:  0.4 mile (600 meters).
• Beach Day-Pass  All cruise line and shore excursion online services offer day-passes to private beaches and resorts in Progreso such as Technotel, Silcer Beach Club, Vista Mar, or Costa Club. Distance from cruise port:  around 5.9 miles (9.4 km).
• Outdoor activities  Close to the cruise port in Progreso, there are a few adrenaline pumping things to do such as jetski, horseback riding, kayaking, buggy tours, biking, caving, snorkel, or fishing.
• Celestún Biosphere Reserve  To see and do:   kayaking in mangroves, watch flocks of flamingos, herons and pelicans, and secluded, off-track beaches. Distance from cruise port:  76.4 miles (123 km).
• El Jaguar Golf Course  18-hole golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus. Distance from cruise port:  20.1 miles (32.4 km).

What's within walking distance and nearby

If you read on less accurate port reviews that you can walk from the cruise terminal to the city of Progreso, be aware that it is a 4-mile long walk in the sweltering Mexican sun. How to explore Progreso for cruise travelers

Cruisers planning to explore the top highlights of Progreso port will discover that many attractions can only be explored on a shore excursion.

The city of Mérida is an exception, which is around 26.8 miles (43.2 km) south of Progreso and can be reached by bus in approximately 1 hour. Local buses depart to Mérida every 10 to 15 minutes and cost around $21 Mexican pesos (less than US$1) each way.

Cruise visitors that typically prefer to stay close to the port, will find the city of Progreso very easy to leisurely explore on foot. The shuttle bus drop-off at the Auto Progreso main bus station is no more than a 5-minute walk from the Malecón , the boardwalk, and main street along the vast beach of Progreso.

In one word, unless cruise travelers do not wish to venture farther than the pier and the modern terminal, there are 3 possible ways to discover the principal attractions of Progreso and Yucatan:

Explore on your own

To travel on your own, there are local taxis just outside the terminal building. The shuttle bus is the best way to travel to the small city of Progreso to enjoy the beach and restaurants by the Malecón and explore on foot. Cruise visitors that wish to travel to the key highlights on your own will find local buses in the drop-off bus station in Progreso.

In the city of Progreso, on Calle 80, close to the Malecón and the beach you will find scooters for rent and a small sightseeing bus that tours the city. Auto Progresso also offers a city tour on a colorful open bus - El Guajolotero . This panoramic 45-minute sightseeing tour around the city of Progreso costs US$9.00 per person, visiting the town square, the boardwalk, the sheltered port, the marinas, and a couple of local neighborhoods.

How to get around and transportation in Progreso, Yucatán, cruise port

As mentioned already, it is relatively easy to get around and explore Progreso on your own. Progreso and Yucatán have an acceptable transportation network although there are only a couple of few public services: taxis and buses.

Taxis and Uber

Cruise travelers will find a taxi dispatch righty outside the terminal close to the shuttle bus stop. Taxis do not offer specific excursions prices. Local drivers speak reasonable English. Taxis tend to be in excellent condition, are not metered, have AC, are reasonably affordable, and accept both US dollars and local currency.

Uber does operate in Progreso. If traveling to Mérida, Cabify is a good way to get around this large city. Expect to pay around US$50.00 for a taxi to Mérida, one-way, for 4 passengers. To correctly calculate a taxi or Uber fare to Mérida see Taxi Finder or Ride Guru .

Public Buses

Auto Progreso is the main bus operator in the State of Yucatán which is also the provider of the shuttle bus from the cruise pier to the city of Progreso. As mentioned before, the shuttle bus drop-off is at the main bus hub in the city, and from here there are regular buses to most notable highlights of Yucatán. Be aware that Auto Progreso also offers a number of organized tours to the top attractions and prices are radically different. For example, the regular bus fare between Progreso and Mérida costs around US$2.00 (return) while a guided tour will set you back between US$10 and US$26. Auto Progreso Website

Dining, local cuisine, drinks, quick bites, and lunch in Progreso

Cruise passengers looking forward to savoring local food will only find a few convenient places to enjoy delicious lunch, a light meal, or refreshing drinks by the Malecón in Progreso.

You may like to try typical cuisine like marinated meat wrapped in banana leaves (Pibil), stuffed tortillas (Sopes), chiles rellenos, empanadas, ceviche, seafood, lobster, or guacamole.

And local drinks such as mezcal, tequila, and all famous Mexican beers. Broadly speaking, eating and drinking in Progreso is relatively affordable . A full and excellent lunch will cost around US$15.00 per person. The following restaurants are well rated and ordered by distance from the start of the Malecón:

Gifts, souvenirs, best shops and shopping in Progreso (Yucatán)

In Progreso cruise port there are quite a few shops selling souvenirs and local gifts. You will find most shops in 3 main areas: the cruise terminal , the central bus station , and in the city center on the Malecón and on Calle 80 (the main street which ends on the beach).

On this main street, the Mercado Popular is a large craft market painted in turquoise cruise visitors will not miss right in front of the 120-foot white lighthouse.

There is little more than a couple of local crafts and Mexican souvenirs for cruise travelers to take home besides hammocks, leather boots and hats, silver jewelry, vanilla, coffee, and hot sauces.

In the duty-free area of the cruise terminal, you will also find fragrances, tobacco, and alcohol with excellent prices , and typical stores like Pirana Joe or Rogers Boots.

Must-know: tourist info, language,and money

There is a tourist info kiosk at the start of the Malecón, close to the Juan Miguel Castro monument by the beach.

Spanish is the official language. However, as in any major tourist cruise port, English is widely spoken.

Currency and ATMs

The Mexican peso is the official currency. Don't take for granted that the US dollars are accepted as in other Mexican cruise ports like Cozumel or Costa Maya. Like in the US$, the peso uses the $ sign and it can be sometimes confusing when seeing prices in Mexican pesos. When in doubt, makes sure you look for MX, Mex$, or MXN. The peso is divided into 100 centavos (cents). There are 5 different coins: 50 centavos, $1, $2, $5 and $10 pesos; and 6 larger bills: $20, $50, $100, $200, $500 and $1000 pesos.

Cruise travelers will not find an ATM at the terminal. But there is an ATM in the bus station where the shuttle stops in the city center. Close by, on Calle 80 #145, there is an HSBC bank with an ATM.

Credit and debit cards

Credit and debit cards are only accepted in some restaurants in Progreso and in Mérida.

Tipping and Haggling

Tipping: when at a restaurant a tip is appropriate as in the US (15-20%). You can tip taxi drivers but it is not expected. Haggling: it is normal and expected to haggle in any shop except on the duty-free shops with fixed prices in the cruise terminal.

Keep in touch: phones, wi-fi and Post Office

Wi-fi and internet.

There are a couple of bars in the cruise port terminal that offer free wi-fi for customers only. The bus station in Progreso where the shuttle bus drops-off provides free wi-fi.

Mexico Code: 52. To call the US or Canada dial 001 prior to the number. To call other countries dial 00 + country code + area code + local number. T-Mobile offers calls at 25 cents/min. and text at no cost. Other US phone providers may work but is advisable to check with your provider to avoid roaming charges.

Post Office

Cruisers will find the Mexpost (Mexican postal service) in the heart of the city of Progreso on Calle 31 #147, around 900 feet (300 meters) south of the main shuttle bus drop-off.

Safety, US travel advisory and basics

The pharmacies of Mexico are famous for selling over the counter medication that in other countries require prescriptions. In the city of Progresso, on Calle 80, two pharmacies are impossible to miss: Farmacias del Ahorro and Emérita Farmacias.

Where is Progreso, Mexico?

Progreso is a small city in Mexico on the northern coast of the Yucatan peninsula. With a population of around 37,000 people, Progreso is primarily a port town. The main industry in Progreso is fishing, as well as cargo shipping.

In recent years, however, Progreso has become a stop for cruise ships. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise lines stop at Port Progreso for cruise goers to do Progreso excursions. Additionally, Progreso pier boasts the longest pier in the world, at 6.5 km (4.1 mile) long. Progreso is not quite as developed as popular cruise stops like Cancun or Playa del Carmen, but it‘s certainly worthwhile. 

But Progreso is more than just a cruise ship shore excursion stop. And it’s more than just a gateway to the rest of the Yucatán peninsula. It’s a destination in its own right! There are plenty of Progreso activities and tours in Progreso for families that warrant more than just an afternoon’s stay or a drive through.   

Planning your trip to Progreso

The best time of year to visit Progreso and take your tours in Progreso is from mid-October to mid-March, when the weather is not sweltering hot. The coldest months are December and January. But even during those months, you can still enjoy plenty of warm beach days from time to time.

To really enjoy the city, plan to stay at least a week. If you’re pressed for time, you can plan for one or two days. But be sure to reserve some time for beach play along with your Progreso activities. If you stay longer than a day, you’ll have plenty of time to take tours in Progreso and still enjoy the beach.

Getting to Progreso

Progreso is a cruise ship port for Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruises. So you can access the city and the tours in Progreso via Progreso port. But if you’re coming to Mexico by air, the nearest international airport is located in Mérida. This airport services flights from the United States, and also serves domestic destinations too. 

If you’re planning to drive a car in Mexico to transport you to your Progreso activities, you can get to Progreso via Mérida, where you can rent your car. And if you’re traveling by bus from elsewhere in Mexico, you’ll need to get a bus into Mérida. From there, you can hire a taxi to take you to Progreso. 

Alternatively, you can book the Merida Progreso autobus. This Progreso to Merida bus is offered by Autoprogreso. The bus terminal in Progreso is located on Calle 29 and 80. Tickets cost 21 pesos (a little over $1 USD) for one way, and 38 pesos (less than $2 USD) for round trip.

Getting around Progreso and where to stay in Progreso

While in Progreso, it’s fairly easy to walk around the city. Progreso is very safe for families. The streets have sidewalks, and some streets, like the Callejón del Amor (on Calle 23), are specifically designed for pedestrians. If you stay close to Centro (the center of the city) or the Malecón (the beachside boardwalk), you’ll have access to plenty of restaurants and Progreso activities.

There are no Ubers in Progreso, but there are taxis available. For families, however, renting a car is a good option. Having access to a car allows you to easily explore all the things to do in Progreso, and makes Progreso excursions outside the city easier as well.

If you’re having trouble finding a Progreso Airbnb or other vacation rentals within the city, try looking outside the city in towns like Chelem or Chuburná. While it requires renting a car, you’ll be able to rent some nice beachfront places at fairly affordable prices. Progreso tends to be a popular spot for retirees and snowbirds who want to avoid the crowds of Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

Other things to know about progreso.

As in most parts of the Yucatán peninsula, many people in Progreso have Mayan heritage. This means you’ll have a chance to experience Mayan culture through dishes like cochinita pibil (pork that has been slow cooked underground) or pavo relleno negro (turkey that’s been slow cooked underground in a pumpkin seed-based broth).

It’s worth spending some time getting to know Mayan culture while you’re in Progreso. Some ways to do this can be reading books about Mexico before your trip, or seeking out traditional Mayan experiences, like a temazcal ceremony , while you’re in Mexico.

2. Progreso Activities | Spend a beach day at the Malecón

Progreso’s proximity to the beach is one of the many draws of this town. Since it’s located along the Gulf of California, you won’t find surfing at the Progreso Mexico beaches. However, families can still spend a day playing in the waves. As with any public space in Mexico, you’ll find hawkers walking along the beach selling things like snacks, fruit, or bracelets.

The Malecón, Progreso’s beachfront boardwalk, borders the main beach in Progreso. It runs from the corner of Calle 19 and Calle 80, and ends at Calle 60. The paved boardwalk is wide, so there’s plenty of room for families to stroll and enjoy the ocean views.

Along the Malecón, you’ll find a large selection of Progreso restaurants, many of them selling seafood. So after spending an afternoon at the beach, you can head over to the restaurants along the Malecon for dinner. The prices will be fairly inflated, due to the location. But if you want dining with a beach view, then this is the spot.

3. Progreso Activities | Enjoy La Ria Progreso

For families looking for low key water activities, renting kayaks with La Ria Progreso is a must! La Ria Progreso is located along Calle 37, east of highway 261. The dock leads into the mangrove forest, located southwest of Progreso.

Families can rent kayaks to explore the mangroves. Kayak rentals are hourly, at 100 pesos for singles and 200 pesos for doubles. Families can also rent paddleboards for 250 pesos per hour. Life jackets are available for adults and kids of all sizes.

4. Progreso Activities | Visit Reserva Ecológica El Corchito

To the south of Progreso is Reserva Ecológica El Corchito (also known as El Corchito Ecological Reserve in English) where you will see cenotes for swimming. Cenotes are sinkholes in limestone bedrock that are filled with fresh water. These natural pools can be found all over the Yucatán peninsula. During Mayan times, they were used for sources of drinking water.

There are three main cenotes at the biosphere reserve of El Corchito, ranging from less than 1 meter (around 3 feet) deep to over 2 meters deep (around 6 feet). There is also a small cenote, roughly 2 meters (6 feet) in diameter that is exclusively for dipping your feet in. The fish in this particular cenote like to nibble the dead skin off your feet! 

Reserva Ecologica El Corchito is open every day, from 9am to 4pm. The entrance to the reserve is located on Calle 27, near the roundabout on Calle 46. From the entrance, you take a boat across the estuary into the reserve. Admission to El Corchito costs 90 pesos (roughly $4.50 USD) for adults, and 35 pesos (roughly $1.75 pesos) for children, making it an affordable option for a cenote Progreso Mexico experience

5. Progreso Activities | Experience Laguna Rosada

Laguna Rosada gets its name from the red hue of its waters. This red coloring comes from the algae that live in the lagoon. Flamingos like to come to this lake to feed on the algae. 

You can rent kayaks to explore the mangroves at Laguna Rosada through Reserva Ecológica Sayalchaltun. Or you can take a guided boat tour of the lake. Rates start from 100 pesos (roughly $5 USD) per hour. The reserve is open every day from 7am to 4pm.

Alternatively, you can take a visit to the traditional salt ponds of Laguna Rosada. Workers harvest pink salt from shallow pools fed from the lake. You can purchase a package of locally harvested Mexican pink salt for 10 pesos (roughly $.50 USD) a package.

6. Progreso Activities | Visit Zona Arqueológica Xcambo

Nearby to Laguna Rosada is the Progreso Mayan ruins found at Zona Arqueologica Xcambo. Located less than 30 minutes away from Progreso, this site was a former commercial port city within the Mayan empire. 

The Xcambo site is small, but there are several pyramid structures to see surrounding an open space. Xcambo is open every day from 8am to 5pm. The fee for Xcambo is 75 pesos (roughly $3.75 USD) per adult. Children under 13 are free.

7. Progreso Activities | Visit Zona Arqueologica de Chichen Itza

Chichén Itzá is an archaeological site in Yucatan and one of the most visited locations in Mexico due to its close proximity to Cancun. It’s classified as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site . 

From Progreso, Chichen Itza is roughly 98 miles (158 kilometers) and takes about two and a half hours to drive there by car. Chichen Itza is open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entrance fee to Chichén Itzá is 498 pesos (roughly $25 USD) for foreign visitors.

8. Progreso Activities | Visit Zona Arqueológica de Dzibilchaltun

Families visiting Progreso don’t have to travel all the way to Chichen Itza to learn about Mayan history. Zona Arqueológica Dzibilchaltun, located just 25 kilometers south of Progreso, is a convenient place to learn about the history of the Mayans. 

Dating from as early as the late Precalssical period of Mayan history to the late Postclassical period, the main feature of the ruins complex is the Temple of the Seven Dolls. The Dzibilchaltun Museum, located near the ruin entrance, offers exhibits to help visitors learn more about the complex. There is also a cenote, called Cenote Xlacah, that visitors can visit during the weekdays.

Dzibilchaltun is open for visitors every day of the week from 8:30 or 9 am to 4 pm. Entrance to Dzibilchaltun is 231 pesos (roughly $12 USD) for foreigner adults, and 75 pesos (roughly $3.75) for kids. During your visit to Dzibilchaltun and other Mayan historical sites, remember to be responsible and respectful of the site, and follow the posted rules.

9. Progreso Activities | Spend a day at Uxmal and ChocoStory

Another archaeological site that you can’t miss is Uxmal. This site has one of the most representative architectures of the Puuc region. Uxmal is located 52 miles (84km) from Mérida and is open every day from 8am to 5pm. The fee to enter is 418 pesos (roughly $21 USD) per person. 

While visiting Uxmal, be sure to incorporate a visit to ChocoStory as well. This open air museum showcases the history of cacao and also shows how cacao is consumed in Mexico. Families will get a chance to taste traditional Mexican cacao.

10. Progreso Activities | Take a day trip to Mérida

For a taste of history and culture, as you’re thinking of things to do in Progreso, head south to the city of Mérida. Just a 30 or 40 minute drive from Progreso, Mérida has no shortage of activities for families . 

A city of over 600,000 people, Mérida has a large selection of restaurants, parks, and museums for families to visit. There are also several neighborhood markets and shopping malls to visit in the area, so you can experience both traditional and modern Mexican culture. Getting to Mérida is easy via highway 261.

11. Progreso Activities | See flamingos at Celestún

Another exciting excursion to take from Progreso is a visit to Celestún, on the western coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. A visit to the Reserva de la Biosfera Ria Celestún will give you the chance to see wild flamingos!

Celestún is about an hour and a half drive from Progreso. Just after you cross the bridge to enter the town of Celestún on highway 281, you’ll see a tourist stop where you can rent boats to explore the estuary and see the flamingos. Boat rentals cost 1,800 peso and come with a guide. 

The boat ride takes you around the estuary, to give you an up close and personal view of the flamingos. Like Laguna Rosada near Progreso, the estuary near Celestún is filled with red algae that makes the water look pink. This is also what gives the flamingos their bright pink hue. We loved seeing these magnificent birds in person and in the wild!

12. Progreso Activities | Enjoy Progreso Mexico kitesurfing and paddleboarding with AlphaSports 

Located on Calle 29, between Calle 132 and Calle 128, AlphaSports offers paddleboarding tours and rentals. They also offer private kiteboarding classes starting at 1,200 pesos (roughly $60 USD) per hour per person. 

For those renting paddleboards, rentals start at 750 pesos (roughly $37.50 USD) per hour. For an additional fee, AlphaSports can arrange delivery of the paddleboard to where you are staying, allowing you to rent for the whole day. If you’re staying on a beachfront property, this is a good option, as it allows families to enjoy paddleboarding for a whole afternoon.

Depart early, travelling by private vehicle towards Merida, learning some Spanish phrases from your leader on the way. You’ll stop at Chichen Itza – one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, for a guided tour. This is perhaps the most famous Maya site in Mexico, dominated by the Temple of Kukulkan (El Castillo), a Mesoamerican step-pyramid. Then take a cooling dip in one of the region’s lesser-known cenotes: Yokdzonot. Operated by a cooperative set up by local women, your visit will support their efforts to empower their Mayan community. After your swim, visit the local Piste community. You’ll spend time with the locals – perhaps trying out some of your Spanish – while sampling traditional Yucatecan cuisine. When you arrive in Merida – the charming capital of the Yucatan region – get your bearings on an orientation walk with your leader. Wander the centuries-old streets and take in the grand buildings, learn about the town’s Maya heritage and swing by Mercado 60 – a buzzing food market with great margaritas and live music.

Your day is free for you to explore the many sights of Merida. You could visit the Regional Museum of Yucatan, located within the pretty Palacio Canton, chill out in the shady Plaza Grande admiring the 16th-century cathedral or seek out cochinita pibil, a slow-roasted, citrus-marinated pork dish that's a Yucatan speciality. Alternatively, take a trip to one of Mexico's best-preserved Maya sites in Uxmal. Spend two hours exploring the ruins and see the impressive so-called Pyramid of the Magician, marvel at the decorative details of the Governor’s Palace and take the opportunity to climb one of the pyramids for astounding views of the surrounding area. Merida is a people-pleaser when it comes to nightlife and has something for all tastes, whether you’re after a low-key bar, cultural show or some live music and dancing.

Leave the city of Merida behind and drive to the coast to spend the night in Campeche – a seaside town with photogenic streets lined with multi-coloured low-rise buildings. On the way, visit the town of Becal, known as ‘the Hat Town’, where your group will meet with an artisan who works in a cave to weave the traditional jipi hats. When you arrive in Campeche, head out on a leader-led orientation walk to get your bearings. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore on your own. For dinner tonight, you’ll find good seafood almost anywhere, and other tempting restaurants at Portales de San Martin.

Rise and shine for the long cross-peninsular drive to Bacalar today. Bacalar is said to be the first settlement of the Itza tribe, who would go on to create Chichen Itza. Today it’s a quiet spot to sit back, relax and take in the surrounding nature. When you're there, take a short leader-led orientation walk to get your bearings, followed by a free afternoon and evening to relax after a long travel day. Cerveza, anyone?

This morning, head out on a half day boat tour of Lake Bacalar. Also known as the Lake of Seven Colours – thanks to the various stunning shades of blue it adopts throughout the day – you’ll explore the different cenotes and islands that make up the lagoon including plenty of stops for swims along the way! Return to town around midday. The rest of the day is then free for you to uncover more cenotes or sit back and relax in Bacalar. You could visit Cenote Azul – a beautiful fresh water rockpool, perfect for swimming. The sparkling water and stalactites and stalagmites in the cave are a sight to behold.

For the boat tour, you should come wearing swimwear and have a hat, sun protection, a water bottle and a towel.

Enjoy a free morning relaxing around Bacalar’s lake before heading in a private vehicle towards Tulum. Along the way, you’ll visit the Tulum archaeological ruins that sit on the cliffs of the Yucatan Peninsula. With a local guide, explore the pre-Columbian Mayan walled city which served as a major port for Coba. Carry on to the town of Tulum and when you arrive, take an orientation walk with your leader. There may be time to fit in a visit to another cenote or find a bar to keep working on that Spanish with the locals. In the evening, why not get the group together for a final meal to say farewell and ‘salud’ to Mexico.

Ya te contamos que hay mucho que ver en Mérida , la capital del estado mexicano de Yucatán . Una ciudad tranquila con edificios coloniales y contemporáneos, grandes museos, una gastronomía riquísima… Pero es que tiene una virtud más: en los alrededores de Mérida también hay muchísimas visitas interesantes. Ruinas mayas más y menos conocidas –que no todo es Chichén Itzá , aunque también está–, pueblos coloniales, maravillas naturales, playas… La mayoría a poca distancia, para disfrutar durante el día y volver a la capital yucateca de noche. Vamos, que hemos tenido que escoger, entre muchas posibilidades, nuestras 10 excursiones y tours desde Mérida que no te puedes perder .

¿Cuál elegir? Pues va en gustos… y depende del tiempo que tengas. Sobre los gustos, te explicamos cada una de las excursiones para que elijas la –o las– que mejor encajen con tu tipo de viaje. Y respecto al tiempo, si lo tienes, en algunos casos te aconsejamos que te quedes a dormir en los sitios en lugar de hacer una excursión de un solo día.

Vamos al lío, estas son nuestras 10 excursiones y tours desde Mérida . La gran mayoría por el estado de Yucatán, aunque al final hay una “salida a un estado cercano”…

1. Excursión a Chichén Itzá desde Mérida

Si hay una excursión desde Mérida de un día más clásica que un Madrid-Barça –o un América-Guadalajara, que para eso estamos en México– es la que lleva a Chichén Itzá , la ruina maya más famosa del país, patrimonio UNESCO y una de las nueve maravillas del mundo moderno. Qué vamos a contarte que no sepas y sobre todo que no hayamos contado ya en nuestro artículo sobre la visita a Chichén Itzá .

Las ruinas se encuentran a unos 120 kilómetros de la capital de Yucatán. En coche, una hora y media. Si no tienes coche y quieres ir y volver en un día, tienes dos formas de visitar Chichen Itzá desde Mérida .

La primera es hacerlo por tu cuenta. Hay muchos autobuses de primera –ADO–, de segunda y colectivos. Los autobuses de primera y de segunda salen de la terminal ADO de Mérida y tardan unas dos horas y cuarto. Si quieres ir con ADO puedes comprar en su web , si vas con uno de segunda lo mejor es que te pases por la estación antes para comprobar los horarios.

La otra forma es contratar un tour a Chichén Itzá que, además del transporte, incluirá guía, entradas, almuerzo y la visita a un cenote. También puedes elegir uno que incluya el espectáculo de luz y sonido nocturno .

2. Excursión a las Coloradas y a Río Lagartos

Una de las visitas más peculiares de Yucatán es la de las Coloradas , esas salinas que se ponen de un color rosa tan intenso y llamativo. En el artículo sobre las Coloradas, la maravilla rosa de Yucatán , te contamos el por qué de ese color y toda la información práctica sobre la visita, si quieres hacerla por tu cuenta. Eso sí, solo puedes hacerlo por tu cuenta si duermes cerca o, como mucho, en Valladolid.

Si quieres visitar las Coloradas en un día desde Mérida , tendrás que hacerlo contratando un tour , porque hay que usar demasiados transportes como para poder ir y volver por tu cuenta. Lo bueno del tour es que en el mismo día también podrás dar también un paseo en lancha por los manglares de Río Lagartos , avistando, si hay suerte, cocodrilos y flamencos. Con el tour , además del transporte, el guía y las entradas, tienes incluido un almuerzo y un “baño maya” con barro blanco.

3. Tours de cenotes desde Mérida

Mira que hay ruinas mayas en la Península de Yucatán, pero todavía hay más cenotes . Si cerca de Valladolid están algunos de los más turísticos, en los alrededores de Mérida hay cenotes menos visitados y algo más “auténticos” . En nuestro artículo sobre cenotes en México, de la Riviera Maya a Yucatán , te explicamos qué son los cenotes, cómo se formaron, qué tipos hay, cómo ayudar a preservarlos y, sobre todo, cómo elegir y cuáles visitar. En los alrededores de Mérida te mencionamos el cenote de San Ignacio, más turístico, hasta con un hotel, y el cenote Su-Hem en Pixyá, mucho más “rural”. Además, hablamos de los de Homún, en la zona del “anillo de cenotes”, donde hay muchísimos, entre ellos los cuatro del complejo de Santa Bárbara.

Si quieres ir por tu cuenta, el cenote de San Ignacio , en Chocolá, a unos 40 kilómetros de Mérida, es al que más fácil podrás llegar en transporte público. Muy cerca del cenote paran los autobuses de segunda y colectivos de la ruta Mérida-Campeche. Puedes ir en un día y volver sin problema, aunque nosotros nos quedamos a dormir en su hotel. Si lo prefieres, también hay tour desde Mérida .

Para ir Su-Hem en Pixyá tienes que alquilar coche, preferiblemente 4×4, porque hay una parte de camino por tierra.

Si quieres visitar más de un cenote en un día, Homún es el destino perfecto. Si no tienes coche, existe la opción de contratar un tour . Puedes elegir la excursión desde Mérida a los cenotes de Homún , que incluye Cascabel, Chaksinkin, Xooch y Pool Cocom, o a los de Santa Bárbara , que incluye dos: Chaksikin y Xoch’. Con ambas tienes entradas, guía y comida incluidos.

Si quieres hacer algo más “aventurero”, puedes contratar un tour para bucear en un cenote o, más ligero, uno para hacer snorkel .

4. Excursión a Sisal y Celestún

Los manglares de Yucatán son conocidos, además de por la belleza de su vegetación, por sus flamencos. Los puedes ver en Río Lagartos y en las Coloradas, pero la zona principal de cortejo del flamenco rosado o caribeño, el del color rosa más intenso del mundo, es Celestún .

Si quieres ver flamencos en Yucatán , tienes que tener en cuenta la época en la que viajas. En invierno, de noviembre a marzo, los encontrarás en la Reserva de la Biosfera de Celestún. A partir de marzo, se desplazan hacia la zona de Río Lagartos, donde se quedan hasta mayo. Estas son las mejores épocas para verlos, aunque en otras épocas también hay algún rezagado –nosotros vimos algunos en las Coloradas a mediados de noviembre–.

Río Lagartos está más “cerca” de Valladolid y Celestún está más “cerca” de Mérida, a unos 100 km. Puedes ir a Celestún en transporte público con Autobuses Oriente o con colectivos y, una vez allí, contratar un tour en lancha.

También tienes la opción de hacer un tour a Celestún desde Mérida con el pueblo marinero de Sisal, uno de los “pueblos mágicos” de Yucatán. La excursión incluye recogida en el hotel, traslado y guía pero el paseo en lancha y el almuerzo corren de tu cuenta.

5. Tours a Uxmal y la Ruta Puuc

Volvemos a cambiar de temática en “nuestras” excursiones desde Mérida pasando de la naturaleza al otro gran imprescindible yucateco: las ruinas mayas. Relativamente cerca de la ciudad están algunas de nuestras favoritas: las de la Ruta Puuc . Te hablamos de ellas en el artículo sobre ruinas mayas y pirámides mayas en México . La más conocida, declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, es la de Uxmal a la que hemos dedicado un artículo entero Las ruinas mayas y la pirámide de Uxmal . En él te hablamos de la visita tanto de día como de noche. Y es que en Uxmal hay un espectáculo nocturno de luz y sonido que nos hechizó. Además de Uxmal, la Ruta Puuc está compuesta por otras cuatro áreas arqueológicas: las de Kabah –la segunda más importante–, Sayil, Xlapak y Labná.

Si solo quieres visitar Uxmal de día desde Mérida , puedes ir en autobús, con Autobuses Sur. No hay mucha frecuencia, pero, si tienes todo el día, no hay problema. Si quieres ver el espectáculo nocturno o visitar las otras áreas arqueológicas, tendrás que ir con coche alquilado o con un tour . Hasta Kabah llega algún colectivo, pero al resto de ruinas, ninguno y por la noche tampoco a Uxmal.

Respecto a los tours desde Mérida, tienes varias opciones: puedes ir solo a Uxmal ; hacer las dos más importantes, Uxmal y Kabah , o todas las ruinas de la Ruta Puuc . Si solo te interesa Uxmal, también puedes combinarlo con la Hacienda Yaxcopoil ; con el Choco Story , o asistir al espectáculo de luz y sonido nocturno .

6. Más pueblos mágicos: Valladolid, Izamal y Motul

Naturaleza, ruinas… pero también hay pueblos bonitos en Yucatán . Además de Sisal, hay otros pueblos mágicos en el estado. Dos de los más bonitos son Valladolid e Izamal , con sus cascos históricos coloniales, en el caso de Izamal conocido por sus edificios amarillos.

Si tienes tiempo, te aconsejamos visitar Valladolid –que es más bien una ciudad, tiene casi 60.000 habitantes– y dormir allí en lugar que hacerlo con una excursión desde Mérida. Echa un vistazo a todas las cosas que hay que hacer en Valladolid, México , para convencerte.

Izamal , por otro lado, es más pequeño y está más cerca de Mérida, así que sí que puedes visitarlo fácilmente con una excursión de un día desde la capital yucateca. Date una vuelta por nuestras 5 cosas que hacer en Izamal para saber qué no te puedes perder.

Motul está todavía más cerca, aunque nosotros admitimos que no lo visitamos. Eso sí, probamos en muchos sitios los huevos motuleños, que son una delicia…

A los tres se llega fácilmente en transporte público desde Mérida. A Valladolid –160 km– con ADO, autobuses de segunda y colectivos en unas dos horas y media – tres horas; a Izamal –unos 70 km– en un par de horas con autobuses de segunda y colectivos, y a Motul –unos 40 km– una hora y cuarto con Autobuses Noreste .

Lo bueno de los tours desde Mérida es que te permiten combinar destinos. Puedes hacer Chichén Itzá, Izamal y Valladolid ; Izamal y Motul ; Chichén Itzá, Izamal y el cenote Xcajum , o Izamal con el espectáculo de luz y sonido en la fachada del convento de San Antonio de Padua.

7. Un pueblo mágico menos conocido: Maní

Valladolid e Izamal son muy conocidos, pero también hay pueblos bonitos y menos frecuentados por turistas en los alrededores de la Mérida mexicana . Uno de ellos es Maní , también incluido en el listado de pueblos mágicos de México. Es uno de los asentamientos más antiguos de Yucatán que sigue habitado, su ex convento de San Miguel Arcángel es una joya colonial y hacen una miel increíble y el mejor poc-chuc de México, o eso dicen. No sabemos si es el mejor, pero el que probamos estaba delicioso. Te lo contamos todo en nuestro artículo sobre qué hacer en Maní .

Hay autobuses directos desde Mérida, de Líneas Unidas del Sur, que llegan en dos horas y tres cuartos.

8. Las ruinas mayas de Mayapán o las de Dzibilchaltún

Volvemos a unas ruinas mayas menos conocidas en los alrededores de Mérida con Mayapán , la última gran capital de la cultura maya que parece un poco una “Chichén Itzá en miniatura”. Cuando el resto de ciudades mayas del actual México estaba en decadencia, Mayapán tomaba el poder. Y la influencia de la anterior capital está clara: ese castillo de Kukulkán es una copia en pequeño del de Chichén Itzá. Por no hablar del observatorio… Aquí, además, todavía se puede subir a las pirámides.

El área arqueológica de Mayapán –no confundir con el pueblo de Mayapán, que está en otro sitio totalmente diferente– está a unos 50 km al sur de Mérida. Hay colectivos desde la terminal Noreste. Otra opción es contratar una excursión desde Mérida que incluye, además del transporte –con traslado desde y hasta el hotel–, guía en español –el guía nos vino fenomenal en las ruinas–, entradas, comida y un cenote.

Otra área arqueológica cerca de Mérida que no nos dio tiempo a visitar es Dzibilchaltún , conocida porque, en los equinoccios, el sol atraviesa las puertas este y oeste del templo de las Siete Muñecas. También por su espectáculo de luz y sonido. Puedes llegar en colectivo hasta Chablekal y, desde allí, en mototaxi. Pero, si quieres ir al espectáculo de luz y sonido y volver, tienes que contratar un tour .

9. La costa de Yucatán desde Mérida

Otra excursión desde Mérida de un día que es bastante típica es a las playas de Yucatán . Hay mundo más allá de Sisal y Celestún en la costa yucateca. El sitio de playa más famoso y más cercano a Mérida es Progreso . Puedes llegar en una hora más o menos en transporte público o contratar un tour –también hay algunos que incluyen más pueblos pesqueros y playas –.

Como nosotros no somos muy de playa, no fuimos a Progreso, pero sí nos acercamos a la costa para recorrer los manglares de San Crisanto , menos conocidos que los de Celestún y Río Lagartos, pero también espectaculares. De vuelta, paramos a comer pescado en el club de playa Seahorse Telchac . No fuimos a la playa a tomar el sol, ni a bañarnos, pero sí a comer, que es más lo nuestro…

10. Campeche

Nuestra última excursión de un día desde Mérida es la única que sale del estado de Yucatán. Pero te aseguramos que merece mucho la pena llegar al vecino Campeche para visitar su capital: San Francisco de Campeche –o, simplemente, Campeche–. En nuestra opinión, una de las ciudades coloniales más bonitas de América . Eso sí, te sugerimos dedicarle un poco más de tiempo, si lo tienes, y quedarte a dormir por lo menos una noche. Nosotros pasamos tres, que hay mucho que ver en Campeche : sus casonas coloniales, sus museos y su gastronomía nos tuvieron bien entretenidos.
