Make the memories of a lifetime on a cruise for seniors and retirees.

Cruises are an often dreamt-about retirement goal, especially for long-time cruise lovers who have always been short on time. Retirement can be the ideal season of life to sail off into the sunset for several weeks, whether to far-off lands like Antarctica or a peaceful journey down the Danube. In some cases, seniors embrace their golden years by booking epic, monthslong voyages around the world.

Many small- and medium-sized ships cater to the over-60 crowd, but that doesn't mean guests will be relegated to shuffleboard and bingo games. Today's seniors still have plenty of adventures to experience and memories to make, both on board and on shore. The following cruise lines offer the top bucket list sailings for seniors and retirees.

Windstar Cruises

Uniworld boutique river cruises, oceania cruises, holland america line, cunard line, aurora expeditions.

Anyone who has ever fancied a near-private yacht-style cruise experience will love the vibe of Windstar Cruises. Each of its yachts holds between 148 and 342 guests, with a 1-to-1.5 crew-to-guest ratio. This makes for more intimate sailings – not only because there's simply less ship to maneuver on foot, but also because Windstar ships have access to ports that megaships aren't permitted to enter. The end result is the unique ability to explore lesser-known destinations and smaller cities. While Windstar is not a strictly adults-only cruise line , you won't see any little ones on board, either. Children must be at least 8 years old to sail on the line, which further adds to the high-end ambiance.

In 2021 and 2022, Windstar's Star Breeze, Star Pride and Star Legend ships received a refresh. The three all-suite yachts were cut in half and enhanced with new suites and amenities, bringing the capacity to 312 passengers on each vessel. These Star Plus Class ships also boast new restaurants, a reimagined spa and fitness center, and more efficient engines, among other improvements. Elevators help make the Star Plus Class ships more accessible for anyone with limited mobility (note that Wind Class ships Wind Star and Wind Spirit do not have elevators). Additionally, Star Breeze, Star Pride and Star Legend each have four wheelchair-accessible suites, which feature a smaller queen bed and reduced "wheel around" space.

On board, passengers can drop by the Open Bridge anytime for an impromptu lesson in chart reading, listen to live music in the Lounge or jump directly into the water from the Watersports Platform. Culinary highlights include restaurant Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso, which serves a twist on modern Spanish cuisine by the 10-time Michelin-starred chef, as well as culinary shore excursions with hands-on cooking classes and chef-led market tours to explore fresh local ingredients.

The cruise industry is abuzz with interest in one of Windstar's newest itineraries, which introduces passengers to the Middle East. The Inaugural Sparkling Sands & Cities itinerary sets sail in November 2023, visiting Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates; Doha, Qatar; and Muscat, Oman, among others. Foodies will be especially interested in the James Beard Foundation's Sparkling Sands & Cities of the Persian Gulf itinerary, scheduled to embark in February 2024. Windstar's other destinations include Asia, Canada and New England, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the South Pacific and more.

Spanning seven continents via river, ocean and expedition vessels, Viking is considered a quintessential high-end cruise experience. For more than 25 years, it has provided destination-focused sailings designed to allow its guests to explore the world in supreme comfort. Its voyages particularly appeal to travelers older than 50 who are interested in science, history, culture and cuisine.

Every Viking cruise fare includes a complimentary shore excursion in each port of call, onboard meals, beer and wine (with lunch and dinner service), Wi-Fi access, and all port charges and government taxes. On Viking's ocean and expedition vessels, guests also enjoy complimentary self-service laundry, access to the Thermal Suite in The Spa, high tea service, alternative restaurant dining and 24-hour room service. But the best part for older cruisers may be what's not included on Viking sailings: kids. This adults-only cruise line is dedicated to guests 18 and older.

Viking's fleet – with capacities ranging from 80 to 998 passengers (on river and ocean cruises, respectively) – feature elegant Scandinavian-style decor. The small ship cruises get closer to their destinations, spend more time in port and include more overnight stays, too.

One of Viking's newest ocean vessels, the all-veranda Viking Saturn, debuted in 2023 and focuses on European sailings. Its 10-day Empires of the Mediterranean route from Venice to Athens is particular popular, with stops in Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Greece. Another in-demand route is the Danube Christmas Delights itinerary on the Viking Longships, which visits enchanting villages, cultural capitals and iconic Christmas markets for a festive holiday cruise .

To suit their needs, guests can choose between different activity levels for walking tour-focused shore excursions. For bibliophiles, The Library on each ship is curated by acclaimed London bookshop Heywood Hill, as well as Cambridge University's Scott Polar Research Institute on the expedition vessels. Viking also holds exclusive partnerships with prestigious scientific institutions, which makes it possible for at least 36 experts – including field research scientists, mountain guides, submarine pilots and other specialists – to accompany passengers on each expedition journey.

A pavlova dessert served on board Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Billed as one of the world's most luxurious all-inclusive river cruise lines , Uniworld Boutique River Cruises features small ships with an average capacity of 120 guests and one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios on the rivers of 1-to-2.4. Part of the allure of the small ship size is a more personalized travel experience that delivers passengers to destinations ocean liners aren't able to visit (such as the Venetian Lagoon, where large ships have been banned from entry).

Uniworld ships are akin to floating boutique hotels, designed to reflect the destinations in which they sail – a vast list that includes ports in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. Guests will appreciate the exquisite details on board, including unique artwork from some of the most famous artists in the world (think: Pablo Picasso and David Hockney), handmade fabrics from local artisans and handcarved furnishings.

Additionally, Uniworld's all-inclusive cruise experience includes all onboard meals, which are made with fresh farm-to-table ingredients, as well as unlimited premium spirits and fine wines. In the base fare, voyages also include a selection of shore excursions, daily entertainment, fitness centers, wellness classes, airport transfers, onboard gratuities, high-speed Wi-Fi access and more.

Uniworld makes it particularly easy to visit many of Europe's most enchanting Christmas towns on a single cruise, where passengers can visit the festive holiday markets and get all their seasonal shopping done. For seniors with more time to spare, the Rivers of the World Cruise is a once-in-a-lifetime journey. This 55-day itinerary departs from Lima, Peru , in October 2024 and takes 40 guests across three continents via four ships to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

This upscale brand recently relaunched under A&K Travel Group with a reimagined vision. Crystal Serenity (which holds up to 740 guests) and Crystal Symphony (carrying up to 606 passengers) underwent a combined $150 million dollar refurbishment that includes updated suites and new wellness offerings at the Aurōra spa. While sailing the high seas with Crystal, passengers' needs are met at every step of the way – a perk made possible by the nearly 1-to-1 staff-to-guest ratio. A dedicated butler in every stateroom and suite will help with packing and unpacking, stocking your fridge, making restaurant reservations, booking excursions and more.

Crystal offers impressive enrichment programming, hosting high-profile lecturers with backgrounds in sports, entertainment and science. Spend some time refining your technology skills at Computer University@Sea and perfecting your ballroom dance moves, photography abilities, golf swing or bridge game. There's also a well-stocked library containing books on a range of subjects, along with board games and a pickleball court.

Dining options on board include Umi Uma, a Japanese-Peruvian dining venue developed by Michelin-starred chef Nobuyuki (Nobu) Matsuhisa. Unlike some other cruise lines that charge a fee for each specialty dining reservation, Crystal allows guests to enjoy one complimentary reservation per person for sailings of 11 days or less. After dinner, nightly entertainment can be found in several venues, such as live music in the Galaxy Lounge.

Crystal sails on itineraries of varying length to the Mediterranean, the Baltic, Alaska, the Caribbean, Canada, Africa and the Indian Ocean, the South Pacific, and Asia. If you're planning a bucket list trip, consider the line's 123-night 2025 World Cruise, which travels to 62 destinations across 31 countries between Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Barcelona, Spain .

The Aquamar Spa on Oceania Cruises

Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

Seniors with a penchant for epicurean delights tend to gravitate toward Oceania Cruises for their cruise vacations – it's known for having one of the finest culinary programs at sea. This cruise line focuses on small ship luxury, with seven ships currently in service carrying between 670 and 1,250 passengers each. An eighth ship, Allura, is set to debut in 2025.

Newer ships like the Vista – the first of the Allura class vessels, which joined the fleet in May 2023 – have wheelchair-accessible rooms and a plethora of onboard culinary venues. A few highlights include Aquamar Kitchen, offering an array of wellness-inspired dishes; The Bakery at Baristas, serving freshly baked pastries; and new signature restaurant Ember, an upscale American eatery. Don't miss the Cellar Master's Wine Luncheon: a two-hour, hand-selected tasting led by the head sommelier that features a five-course menu paired with premium wines for each dish.

Senior cruisers will enjoy the Aquamar Spa's signature massage therapies, which use natural ingredients and modern techniques to release stress and tension. The Vitality Center offers a steam room, a thalassotherapy pool and heated lounge beds for extra relief. Onboard entertainment on Oceania, meanwhile, includes musical performances and immersive shows with dance numbers led by "Dancing With the Stars" choreographer Britt Stewart. The Culinary Center is a fan favorite for seniors, offering the opportunity to practice cooking techniques and learn about the unique flavor profiles of regional dishes.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a location Oceania doesn't sail to, with cruises to Africa, Asia, South America, the Middle East, the South Pacific, the Caribbean, Antarctica and more, as well as transoceanic voyages and 180-day world cruises. Oceania also provides a good overall value, thanks to its included specialty restaurants, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions, round-trip airfare and transfers, and in-port shuttle service.

Holland America Line's Westerdam ship sails through Yakutat Bay in Alaska

Courtesy of Holland America Line

As a premium, midsize cruise line, Holland America Line offers plenty of destinations, excursions and activities aligned to an older audience. The smaller ship size, which averages around 2,000 passengers per sailing, allows for many of the ships to dock in ports that are inaccessible to larger ships, getting passengers even closer to the destinations they're visiting. For older passengers who may have limited mobility, the option to simply disembark the ship without waiting for a tender or other means of transportation can make or break a trip.

Holland America Line, though family-friendly, offers myriad excursions that are primarily adult-oriented and open to all types of adventurers. Shore excursions are clearly marked with an activity level ranging from easy to strenuous, from leisurely wine tastings and relaxing strolls through ancient towns to ATV rides through the jungle and dog-sledding on a glacier only accessible via helicopter.

Onboard entertainment and activities are plentiful; guests often enjoy the multiple music lounges and venues on each ship, along with hosted programs such as bingo and trivia. For seniors who can't get enough of the pickleball trend, Holland America Line has partnered with the Professional Pickleball Association to bring branded courts and equipment on board. After all that action on the court, unwind in the Greenhouse Spa & Salon with a rejuvenating treatment. (Pro tip: Add on the Thermal Suite for access to the healing hydrotherapy circuit and heated, tiled loungers that will melt all your cares away.)

The numerous onboard dining options bring together cuisines and flavors from all over the world, with specialty restaurants featuring menus developed by a team of master chefs known as Holland America's Culinary Council. In addition to casual dining in the Lido Market and multicourse affairs in The Dining Room, each ship also features the Pinnacle Grill, an onboard steakhouse offering high-end meats and seafood. Other specialty restaurants vary by ship and may include Italian eatery Canaletto and the French-inspired Rudi's Sel de Mer.

Holland America Line sails all over the world. It does an especially nice job with its Greek island cruises and Adriatic Sea adventures. One of the line's newest ships, Rotterdam , is a crowd-pleaser with its sleek design details and an onboard art collection valued at more than $4.1 million. Still, longtime favorites like the refurbished Oosterdam and Eurodam host plenty of happy guests.

A White Night party in Monte Carlo on Azamara Onward

Courtesy of Azamara

Another all-inclusive, senior-friendly brand is Azamara, which boasts a long list of perks covered in the base fare. Your one-time payment covers meals and beverages, including standard spirits, international beers and a limited amount of wine by the glass; you can upgrade to a beverage package if you'd like access to premium brands. Other included amenities range from self-service laundry to gratuities to special cultural evenings featuring onboard or onshore performances by locals.

There are four ships in Azamara's fleet. Each carries up to 702 passengers, so they still fit comfortably into the small ship category and can access less-visited ports than larger vessels. Destinations on Azamara include ports throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand, the Americas, and the Caribbean; there are also transoceanic itineraries. If spending roughly half a year on a cruise ship sounds like your ideal retirement plan, consider the Azamara World Voyage in 2025. Over 155 nights, you'll visit 37 countries.

Each of the line's ships has staterooms designed to accommodate guests with mobility limitations, and Azamara has created customized shore excursion tours for guests with disabilities as well. Accessible tours are designed for full-time wheelchair users or guests unable to navigate motor-coach steps.

There are plenty of entertainment options on board, including Club Crooner's hits from current and classic songbirds, as well as ship-specific venues with various song and dance performances. Plus, every cruise hosts a White Night signature dinner and entertainment event on the pool deck (so be sure to pack your favorite white attire). Unwind with darts, arts and crafts, pingpong, shuffleboard, trivia contests, bingo and dance lessons. Don't miss opportunities to attend lectures through the enrichment program.

A refreshment platter served by a lounge chair at Cunard Grills

Christopher Ison | Courtesy of Cunard Line

Cunard Line's ocean liners have sailed between the U.K. and New York since 1840 – and the brand's relationship with the British monarchy is integral to its heritage. As such, each ship is named after a British queen. The newest ship, Queen Anne, joins the fleet in 2024.

In keeping with its history, Cunard Line has several signature experiences that help set the brand apart. Afternoon tea is a Cunard tradition observed daily in the Queen's Room; expect white-gloved waiters serving scones and finger sandwiches alongside infused teas in silver teapots (add Champagne for an additional fee). During gala evenings, guests don tuxedos and ballgowns for a sophisticated celebration you won't soon forget. Themes range from Masquerade to Roaring 20s; you'll get a heads-up before you pack your cruise attire .

Each of the four stateroom grades has its own dedicated fine dining restaurant with excellent service and indulgent menus, though there are several casual dining options as well – not to mention specialty dining venues for an additional fee. A host of activities will keep you busy day and night, including a library, open-air pools, fitness facilities, live music, theater performances, guest speaker events, board games, film screenings, art classes, planetarium shows (on Queen Mary 2) and group dance classes.

Accessible shore experiences are available in many ports, ranging from lower activity-level tours to adaptations for wheelchair users. Accessible staterooms are available on Queen Victoria , Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2 ; these come with modifications like wider entryways, nonslip bathroom floors and shower seats.

A Zodiac cruise in Antarctica with Aurora Expeditions ship Greg Mortimer

Scott Portelli | Courtesy of Aurora Expeditions

Nothing says "once-in-a-lifetime" quite like embarking on an expedition to the world's most remote destinations – and, specifically, to Antarctica. For cruisers looking to explore this far-off land, Aurora Expeditions is one of the most trusted names in the industry. Founded by legendary adventurer Greg Mortimer, the brand sends an education-focused expedition team on each voyage, with a ratio of about one team member per every eight passengers. With an average of just 132 cruisers on these sailings, you'll get more one-on-one time with your expedition team.

Seniors can climb aboard Aurora Expeditions' Greg Mortimer or Sylvia Earle ship for innovative itineraries to the Great White Continent. When the ship isn't pausing to watch breaching whales, passengers can kayak between icebergs, visit penguin colonies or take guided hikes across the tundra. Aurora describes its cruises as "100% climate neutral," with a commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

All of Aurora Expeditions' voyages let travelers explore at their own pace, making it a great option for all ages. There are many included activities on each expedition, such as bird-watching, photography, lectures on wildlife, Zodiac cruises and near-shore excursions. The line will even outfit you with Muck boots and waterproof polar jackets. The entire voyage is laid-back, with an informal dress code.

On board, all cabins have a view of the ocean, and most have their own balcony. Tips are included in the cost of your cruise, and guests can enjoy a complimentary house wine or beer with dinner. Look forward to hearty dishes to help fuel your activities, with some buffet-style meals, a la carte options and a reservations-required restaurant on each ship.

Overall Rating:

Singles Travel International

What Are Singles Cruises for Seniors?

If you’re a senior who enjoys solo travel and meeting new people, you might want to book a singles cruise. These adventures can be a great way for older adults to enjoy traveling alone at surprisingly affordable prices. Beyond singles cruises, you can also look into general cruise lines that cater to the older set.

Pro Tip: To learn more about my favorite cruises, read my guide to the best cruises for seniors .

The Advantages of Singles Cruises for Seniors

Singles cruises for seniors offer many benefits, such as discounted room prices, wine tasting, and onboard entertainment –– not to mention plenty of opportunities to meet other singles.

Less planning

Since most singles cruises are all-inclusive, you don’t have to worry about last-minute itinerary planning. Most singles cruises provide a day-by-day itinerary with information on daily activities, events, and excursions. For those who want an adventurous time without having to plan, a cruise is a great option. Personally, planning travel makes me anxious, so I love handing the process over to the professionals.

Meeting new people

A singles cruise is designed to cater to people of all ages who are looking to meet new people. If you’re recently divorced or looking for a new relationship, a singles cruise offers an opportunity to meet others in a similar position. These cruises will often have programs like speed dating and dances to help facilitate interactions. Plus, some cruises cater to singles specifically, giving you a discount or “single supplement.”

Courses and events

Singles cruises offer plenty of great activities, such as wine tastings, chef-prepared meals, dancing, pool parties, concerts, and group exercises. All of this helps make it easier to meet new people.

1. Viking Ocean Cruises - Best Overall Value

What we like most:.

  • Wide range of trips
  • Luxurious suites
  • Excellent customer service
  • Risk-free guarantee

Cost: $799+ per person

Viking offers river, ocean, and expedition voyages on all seven continents. I could choose from a variety of cruise destinations, including Scandinavia, Northern Europe, Asia, and Australia. As the world’s leading small-ship cruise line, Viking Ocean Cruises has a fleet of new, state-of-the-art ocean ships, ranging from Viking Star to Viking Saturn. Each ocean ship can carry up to 930 adult guests for an intimate experience and longer overnight stays at ports. With so many adults on a boat, it was easy for me to meet people, especially at meal times.

To book a cruise, I simply visited the Viking website and selected the region, departure date, and duration of my stay. If you’re looking to travel to Scandinavia and Northern Europe for a duration of 12 days, you can choose your sail date and include a promo code to get the best deals. You can also select the number of guests and specify the type of stateroom or suite you would like to book.

Viking Ocean Cruises offers a risk-free guarantee for guests, allowing you to change your cruise date up to 14 days before your departure. Viking will also waive any change fees. Other features of this cruise include spacious veranda staterooms and suites. In addition to a variety of destinations, Viking Ocean Cruises offers special savings on both airfare and cruise costs.

FYI: Cruises aren’t the only way to meet that special someone. Consider trying one of the best dating websites for seniors .

2. Singles Travel International - Made for Singles

  • Made specifically for singles
  • Worldwide destinations
  • Meet-and-greets onboard
  • Online community

Cost: $7,173 average, but ranges from $2,398 to $14,779

With affordable (comparatively speaking) cruises starting at $2,398 per person, Singles Travel International is a tour agency that offers fun cruise destination trips for single seniors over the age of 50. With several destination options ranging from Antarctica, Africa, and South America, seniors can enjoy a fun solo getaway at affordable prices.

With over 28 years in business, Singles Travel International offers great savings on single supplements, free membership, and fun singles cruise meet-and-greets and cocktail hours. Other benefits include an option to find a travel companion and ongoing promotions and discounts.  For example, when I was booking my trip, I could’ve saved thousands by getting a premium membership. This is a good option if you think you want to take cruises more regularly.

Plus, when I signed up for a free membership, I got a $50 discount on my first vacation and free access to its online community for senior singles over the age of 50.

3. Silversea - Luxurious and All-Inclusive

  • Made specifically for seniors
  • Generous all-inclusive options
  • Onboard spas and fitness centers
  • Gourmet dining

Cost: $3,600+ per person

If you’re looking to pamper yourself with a luxury cruise, Silversea provides amazing shore excursions and all-inclusive service covering 900 destinations. Although pricing is on the high side, you can still find plenty of great deals on both airfare and transfers. With Silversea, you can travel and explore new destinations like the Galapagos Islands, Asia, and Alaska –– all while enjoying the views from your luxury oceanview suite.

Booking as a solo traveler, I received a 25 percent single supplement on some voyages, which means a 25 percent discount. Not every cruise line offers this discount, as each room can support two people, typically.

You can choose from all-inclusive cruises or special Silversea Expeditions luxury cruises if you’re looking to travel to remote regions. Some of the benefits of choosing Silversea include complimentary beverages, gourmet dining, shore excursions, and educational lectures on the places you’re visiting. As someone who loves to learn, I found this trip both educational and fun, not to mention delicious.

With Silversea’s all-inclusive offerings, you’ll also enjoy personalized services with butler service for all its suites. Additionally, you’ll have access to a luxurious spa and fitness center, along with a beauty salon and acupuncture services for older adults with arthritis or back pain. It was lovely to have a spa to come home to after a long day exploring!

4. Tauck World Discovery - Great Expeditions

Tauck World Discovery

  • Extensive guided land tours
  • River and ocean cruises
  • Fine dining
  • Panoramic sun decks

Cost: $3,990+ per person

Looking for a solo getaway? Tauck World Discovery offers solo cruise adventures for older adults. Consider booking a solo trip on one of its European River Cruises, with prices starting at $4,390 per person for eight- to 25-day tours. In addition to river and small-ship cruises, Tauck offers guided land tours in destinations like Africa, Canada, Israel and Jordan, and Latin America.

We recommend solo travelers book one of the European River Cruises. For example, I was interested in the longest, Grand European Cruise, a 25-day cruise that hits Amsterdam, Budapest, Vienna, Nuremberg, Regensburg, and Koln. It starts at $13,990. I like this cruise because it will allow me to see nine European countries and stay three nights in Bucharest. Altogether, I am going to see these countries:

  • Netherlands

Other features and benefits of booking a cruise through Tauck is that you’ll enjoy unlimited complimentary beverages, fine dining, and amenities such as a fitness center, spa, and sun deck featuring panoramic views of the river. For the European River Cruises, some of the destinations include the Danube, Douro, and Rhone rivers.

5. Holland America Line - 35-Day Trips

Holland America Line

  • Trips up to 133 days long
  • Helpful smartphone app
  • Onboard casinos
  • Wine tastings

Cost: $499+ per person

With 149 years in business, Holland America Line offers 19 cruise destinations with over 473 ports. If you’re looking for an affordable cruise option, I recommend traveling with Holland America Line. Its Worry-Free Promise program gives guests the chance to change their cruise plans or cancel for any reason up to 30 days before departure if you or a travel party tests positive for COVID-19.

Holland America Line has a fleet of 11 classic ships with destinations and ports in Alaska, Europe, the Panama Canal, Asia, and more. You can choose from seven- to 133-day cruise trips, depending on your destination and travel needs. The longest cruise goes from pole to pole, leaving and departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. If you’re a single senior, you’ll love the amenities the cruise ship offers, such as classical cruise ship music, theatrical shows, concerts, and other live entertainment.

Some of the additional features of this cruise line include spacious suites and staterooms, along with unique dining options and a casino. You can also use its free mobile-friendly app to personalize your cruise experience and browse your planned activities for the day. Depending on the cruise ship you choose, you can also participate in wine tastings and cooking demonstrations.

Did You Know: Before you head for the sea, be sure to have your travel insurance in order.

6. Solos Holidays - Social Activities

Solos Holidays

  • Caters to solo travelers
  • Great onboard entertainment
  • Spacious rooms
  • Ample social activities

Cost: $261+ per person

Solos Holidays caters to solo travelers who enjoy going to exciting destinations while meeting new people. Based in London, this company focuses on “singles holidays” and offers a wide selection of destinations across the globe. Some of the cruise destinations include Europe, Australia, Asia, and Africa.

I recommend going on A Taste of the Fjords. I departed from London and spent seven nights in Norway (prices start at $1,420 per person). On the ship, dining and entertainment options were plentiful, and the destinations — Bergen, Flam, and Stavanger —  were beautiful and picturesque. Plus, as a single, it was nice being with a group of eight and a tour leader, as I didn’t feel lonely. This is one of the more affordable cruise options, which is always appreciated.

7. Cunard - Great Onboard Entertainment

Cunard

  • Low starting prices
  • Orchestra performances
  • Onboard libraries and gyms
  • Planetarium shows

Cost: $699+ per person

Cunard provides luxury cruise services across the globe. In fact, in the past, it has had esteemed guests like Elizabeth Taylor and Charlie Chaplain onboard its ships. Depending on the type of vacation and travel experience you’re looking for, you can anticipate spending around $699 per person for an English cruise to up to $2,199 per person for a Caribbean cruise. This is incredibly affordable, as cruises can cost tens of thousands of dollars, which is not in my budget. Here are the prices I saw when I looked in October 2023:

When you book a cruise with Cunard, you’ll enjoy amenities such as afternoon tea, live orchestra performances, and events moderated by prolific speakers. In addition to spacious open decks and Broadway-style shows, seniors will enjoy a packed itinerary of events and activities.

Other features include twice-daily turndown services, concierge services, personal butlers, great dining options, and complimentary room service. Guests can also enjoy group dance classes, planetarium shows, and access to the library and gym facilities.

We recommend choosing one of its seven-day transatlantic cruises onboard its Queen Mary 2. The best part is you’ll have access to live performances from the Royal Shakespeare Company, along with various accommodations to make your stay enjoyable. Cruises start at $849 per person for a Christmas 2023 voyage.

8. Riviera River Cruises - Great for Solo Travelers

Riviera River Cruises

  • Luxurious amenities
  • Niche destinations

Cost: $899+ per month

Riviera River Cruises offers several river cruises in Europe and other destinations around the world. Solo travelers can expect to pay around $899 to $5,479 for longer-duration trips.

If you enjoy solo traveling without sharing a room, then we’d recommend the Rhine, Strasbourg & Heidelberg River Cruise for Solo Travelers. This eight-day cruise starts at $2,449 per person and features eight guided tours, a live classical quartet recital, daily meals, and five-star services. For this particular cruise, you’ll embark in Cologne and visit destinations like the Rhine Gorge and the historic Mainz port. Plus, there are departures aimed at solo travelers specifically, which start at $2,749 per person. Unfortunately, there’s no single supplement, but there are also no additional fees; I paid the listed price, which was a welcome departure from other cruise lines and their many hidden fees.

When you choose Riviera River Cruises, you’ll enjoy amenities and features like daily morning and afternoon tea and coffee, along with full daily meals, complimentary Wi-Fi, and the option to extend your cruise. Other benefits include access to an expert cruise director and concierge services to help make for an enjoyable stay.

Many cruise lines will often offer great discounts for those who book one-passenger trips, so be on the lookout for those deals throughout the year.

Stateroom comforts and luxuries.

When selecting the best cruise line for 50-year-olds, accommodations play a crucial role. You’ll find that cruise lines catering to your age group offer staterooms designed for comfort and relaxation. These rooms are equipped with plush bedding, spacious layouts, and elegant decor. Additionally, you can expect luxurious amenities such as premium toiletries, bathrobes, and slippers in your stateroom.

For instance, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Seabourn are renowned for their lavish suites with panoramic ocean views, private balconies, and personalized butler service. These cruise lines prioritize the comfort and satisfaction of their guests, ensuring a restful and indulgent stay on board.

Dining Experiences

A significant aspect of your cruise experience is the dining options available. The best cruise lines for 50-year-olds offer a diverse range of culinary experiences to satisfy your palate. From upscale fine dining venues to casual eateries, you’ll have a plethora of choices for every meal.

By prioritizing exquisite dining experiences, these cruise lines ensure that every meal is a delight for your senses.

Service and Hospitality

The role of staff in enhancing the cruise experience.

The staff on a cruise play a pivotal role in making your experience memorable. They are there to ensure that your needs are met promptly and with a smile. Whether it’s the friendly waitstaff in the dining areas or the housekeeping team that keeps your stateroom pristine, the attentive service can elevate your cruise vacation.

For example, on luxury cruise lines like Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Seabourn, you can expect personalized service where the staff anticipates your preferences and goes above and beyond to cater to your requests. From remembering your favorite drink to offering tailored recommendations, the staff creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere onboard.

Personalized Guest Services

Personalized guest services are a hallmark of a premium cruise experience for 50-year-olds. These services extend beyond the standard offerings to ensure that you feel valued and special throughout your journey.

On cruise lines like Azamara and Oceania Cruises, personalized guest services may include dedicated concierge assistance to help you plan shore excursions tailored to your interests or arranging special celebrations for milestones like birthdays or anniversaries. This attention to detail adds a personal touch that enhances your overall satisfaction and enjoyment during the cruise.

By focusing on outstanding service and personalized guest experiences, cruise lines can create a welcoming and accommodating environment that caters specifically to the needs and desires of 50-year-old travelers seeking a high level of hospitality during their voyage.

Value for Money

When looking for the best cruise line as a 50-year-old, understanding inclusive pricing is essential. Here’s how you can evaluate and compare cruise packages.

Understanding Inclusive Pricing

  • What is Included: Look for cruises that offer a wide range of amenities in their base price. This could include accommodations, meals, onboard activities, and entertainment. Ensure you know what is covered to avoid unexpected costs.
  • Additional Costs: While some cruise lines offer all-inclusive packages, others may charge extra for specialty dining, premium beverages, shore excursions, spa services, and gratuities. Be aware of potential additional expenses when budgeting for your cruise.
  • Comparing Value: Evaluate the overall value of the cruise by considering the inclusions against the additional costs. A slightly higher upfront price that includes more amenities may end up being more cost-effective than a cheaper base fare with numerous add-ons.
  • Gratuities and Service Fees: Many cruise lines automatically add gratuities to your onboard account. Ensure you understand the gratuity policy to avoid unexpected charges.
  • Shore Excursions: While shore excursions can enhance your cruise experience, they often come at an extra cost. Research excursion options in advance and consider budgeting for activities that interest you the most.
  • Specialty Dining and Beverages: If you enjoy gourmet dining or premium beverages, be prepared for additional charges at specialty restaurants or bars. Some cruise lines offer dining packages that may provide cost savings if you plan to indulge.

By understanding what is included in the base price and identifying potential extra costs, you can assess the overall value for money offered by different cruise lines and find the best option that aligns with your preferences and budget.

You’ve explored the tailored experiences cruise lines offer for 50-year-olds, from enriching programs to luxurious dining. By understanding inclusive pricing and considering additional costs like gratuities and excursions, you can make informed choices that match your preferences and budget. Enjoy your cruise adventure tailored to your tastes and embark on unforgettable journeys with the perfect cruise line for your 50s!

Which cruise line is best for 50 year old couples?

Traveling with others may not always be an option for couples over 50, yet you have the desire to travel. Read on to know about exclusive cruise deals for you.

Book Your Cruise

As a cruiser over the age of 50, you may not consider yourself a "senior" (they are your parents!). However, your concept for your next trip may not include swarms of screaming families, boisterous teenagers, or younger individuals in a party mood.

If this is the case, the finest cruises for adults (and other people over 50) provide not just lots of options for fun, but also a mature environment for networking with couples, singles, and maybe a few children. These ships may provide you with a comfy bed, tasty meals, well-prepared alcoholic drinks, and opportunities to be busy both on and off the ship.

In the following list, you will find some cruise lines which are suitable for people over the age of 50.

1. Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity ships are trendy, visually stunning, and attract a broad clientele, with fewer families with young children than other major ship lines (although an excellent children's programme). The design includes high-tech nightclubs and resort-style pool areas, as well as lots of possibilities to mingle.

Wonderful calm settings await, the sort where you may snuggle up with your loved one outside under the sunlight or sky, or indoors drinking martinis on a soft couch for two. It's unusual to feel crowded on a mega-ship. Instead, you're in a modern setting with outstanding service and top-tier cuisine (including eateries as art at some specialty restaurants). The martinis are also delicious.

2. Oceania Cruises

Oceania ships' attractive sophistication extends from the décor and jaw-dropping collection of unique Latin-focused art (Picasso in the house!) to enticing enrichment programmes like a hands-on cookery school. You don't need to start dressing beyond private club casual to access specialty dining places (for no extra charge), which include an excellent seafood restaurant and pan-Asian restaurant, as well as famous chef Jacques Pepin's namesake French bistro on the 1,250-passenger Marina and Riviera .

On land, organized culinary excursions and wellness-focused experiences are among the trip possibilities that are easily accessible and appealing to those over the age of 50. Alternatively, you may just stroll off the ship to visit the ports of call on routes that frequently include overnight stays, allowing you to get to know a region.

3. Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking's 990-passenger ships are built for people 18 and older, with spacious accommodations that will make you feel right at home while you're not visiting a diverse range of locations. The minimalist Scandinavian architecture emphasises mingling areas; even the three-deck atrium offers socialising nooks where you may meet friends for a bourbon or tea. With complementary Nordic-style hot and cold sensations, the spa is among the best at sea.

Streamed TED Talks provide cerebral stimulation, while ABBA tunes provide amusement. An infinity pool is among the many outdoor features. The cruise ticket includes wine and beer, speciality cuisine, Wi-Fi, and shore excursions, so there is no nickel and diming with this company.

Also Check: What cruise line is best for singles?

4. Seabourn Cruises

What makes the ultra-luxury line Seabourn so alluring is its ability to remain current. Seabourn embraces the nostalgic culinary trend with the 1960s-style The Grill by Thomas Keller (showcasing meals like lobster thermidor by one of America's best chefs) or delivers handmade drinks from the open bar by renowned mixologist Brian Van Flandern.

You stay in beautiful suites with marble baths and may order Champagne as well as caviar whenever you like (for free). Explore healthy living through Dr. Andrew Weil's wellness programmes. Learn about the history of Broadway plays like "The Lion King" with famed lyricist Tim Rice (his hologram appearing on the stage). Everything is just deliciously cool.

5. Windstar

Windstar provides leisurely hours in the sun and simple exploration of tiny ports of call with its small sailing ships (driven by wind and motors) and motorized yachts. The laid-back, sociable atmosphere allows you to choose your own itinerary, whether it's resting with a good book or joining a nightly conga line out on the deck.

It's all about the yacht-like atmosphere, with the crew discreetly ministering to your needs and no need to dress up even for supper, where alternatives include dining outside by candlelight. When you're not busy chatting with the other adults onboard, the flexible water sports platform includes kayaks and other gear you can borrow to explore on your own.

10 Best Cruises for Singles of All Ages

From expeditions to around-the-world voyages, these sailings are perfect for solo travelers.

best cruise ships for 50 year olds

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

best cruise ships for 50 year olds

Traveling the world without having to pack and unpack multiple times is ideal. And on a cruise, that's a reality as you head from destination to destination on what is basically a moving luxury hotel (or a floating city, in some cases).

Being able to sleep in Bratislava and wake up in Budapest in five-star accommodations without having to drag all your stuff with you is as convenient as it is luxurious. But cruises aren't just for couples or families — they're great for singles as well.

Colleen McDaniel, the editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic , tells Travel + Leisure that cruises are a great place to meet new people. Some ships have single cabins, host parties for single passengers, or even waive the single supplement fee (river cruises tend to do that most often).

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line offers studio cabins for single travelers that include access to an exclusive lounge with complimentary espresso and snacks. "One of the benefits of sailing as a single is cruises are generally social. That's how they're designed," McDaniel says. "If you're somebody who's comfortable traveling by themselves and looks to make friends on vacation, there's no shortage of people you're going to meet."

But while younger travelers might want to hop around Europe and party every night, someone in their 50s may be interested in a longer cruise with opportunities for cultural immersion. Whatever your travel style, here are the best cruises for singles of any age.

Cruises for Singles in Their 20s

Cruises that last three to five nights are great for singles in their 20s, in part because they're less expensive, McDaniel says. If you do end up having to pay for a single supplement, "it's a little bit less of a hit to your wallet."

Cruise line Virgin Voyages offers exciting journeys aboard their ultra-instagrammable ship, Scarlet Lady . The four-night Fire and Sunset Soirees cruise from Miami is ideal for travelers in their 20s or 30s looking for a healthy mix of party and wellness.

Another great option is a three-day cruise to the Bahamas from Miami on Norwegian Sky . The ship was refurbished in 2019 and offers 10 dining options, a full-service Starbucks, and a casino for late-night bonding around the blackjack table with your new shipmates.

Cruises for Singles in Their 30s

According to McDaniel, cruisers in their 30s are likely looking for a good mix of "bustling nightlife and engaging in classes, but they also really want to explore and experience culture." She says river cruises that offer things like silent discos and paint-and-wine classes appeal to this age group.

Expedition cruise line Atlas Ocean does not charge a single supplement fee for certain staterooms on its luxury yachts, making it a great fit for solo travelers. The cruise line is known for its culturally immersive sailings, which include tours with local guides, artisanal workshops, and even drone photography classes. Consider the Folklore & Waterfalls cruise from Reykjavik to Dublin for a chance to capture jaw-dropping landscapes while meeting like-minded travelers.

Other travelers might want to opt for a South American adventure with National Geographic. The 10-day Upper Amazon river cruise aboard the Delfin II offers a chance to spot diverse wildlife within this impressive ecosystem.

Cruises for Singles in Their 40s

Upscale, bigger cruises on ships from Princess , Holland America , and Celebrity will likely appeal to cruisers in their 40s, McDaniel says. These cruises tend to be a bit more expensive, but "appeal because they have some really great excursions and might go off the beaten path. They're destination-immersive experiences."

The seven-night Galapagos Southern Loop on Celebrity Xpedition is one fantastic option. The Galapagos Islands are a great destination for solo travelers and this cruise is a solid way to see them. Search for sea turtles, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies during the day, and spend the evening in the ship's hot tub or take in one of the nightly lectures by certified naturalists from the Galapagos National Park.

A seven-day Mediterranean with Greek Isles and Turkey cruise aboard Princess Cruises' Sun Princess is an additional option for travelers hoping to see another part of the world best explored by ship.

Cruises for Singles in Their 50s

McDaniel says that a river cruise is a great option for someone in their 50s, with some lines waiving the single supplement fee and putting age restrictions on passengers (since you may not want little kids running around). Some companies, she notes, do a great job of hosting single mixers, which adds to the social experience. A cruise along the Danube or Rhine rivers is always a great choice, and there are several lines to choose from.

Sail along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers on Viking's Grand European Tour , which starts in Amsterdam and ends in Budapest. Along the way, the ship stops in charming towns and major European capitals for a well-rounded trip through continental Europe.

The twelve-day Cities of Light cruise , also from Viking River Cruises, carries passengers between Paris and Prague with several stops in Germany along the way. On board, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the sight of the cities slipping by.

Cruises for Single Seniors

A world cruise is a great option for seniors, McDaniel says, as they tend to have more free time. These cruises visit multiple countries over a longer period of time, and after a while, the boat feels like home.

"One of the great things about being a senior is you tend to have a far more flexible schedule," she says. "You also likely have a bit more disposable income."

The 133-day Grand Voyage Pole to Pole from Holland America Line offers a round-trip journey from Fort Lauderdale, covering Antarctica, South America, Europe, and Canada. Overnight stops include Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Lisbon, and Reykjavik, Iceland, among others.

Those looking to explore both the Eastern and Western Hemisphere might enjoy Cunard's 98-night New York to Southhampton cruise. The World Voyage aboard the Queen Anne includes stops in the Caribbean and Central America before crossing the International Date Line to Samoa, New Zealand, and Australia. The ship visits various countries in Asia, such as Vietnam and Malaysia, before heading to South Africa, Spain, and England. On a cruise this long, even the shiest solo traveler is bound to make a few friends.

We are planning our first Alaskan cruise and were wondering what is the best cruise line/ship for 45-50 year olds? Also, which cruise lines are the most casual and offer the most flexible dining options? We don't want to be having to get dressed up every night just to eat dinner!

check out the discussion on the thread about "ships leaving seattle".

as far as i know, NCL is the only one with a casual dress code (no formal nights...no suits, tie required) and multi-dining venues. both the NCL star and the NCL pearl has over 8 different eating areas. while i loved my week on the star and thought she was a beautiful ship...this time i would recommend the pearl. she is one of NCL's newest ship, great reviews and she is the only NCL ship going to glacier bay.

we are mid-50s and loved our trips last year.

Budget Queen

for your dining priorities, I too suggest the NCL line. Very casual and many dining options available. Princess also has personal choice, but maybe a step above in attire is necessary??? Although no tshirts are essentially allowed on the NCL, you will see sweatshirts, and jeans. Not as frequently seen on Princess.

Sea Hag

If you and your husband are after casual dining, then NCL would be a good choice for you. My husband particularly appreciates the anytime dining and the fact that if you ask for a table for two, you'll nearly always get one.

Although no tshirts are essentially allowed on the NCL, you will see sweatshirts, and jeans. Not as frequently seen on Princess.
Do you mean that sweatshirts and jeans are not as frequently seen on Princess generally, or do you mean people don't frequently dine in jeans and sweatshirts? I wouldn't wear to jeans dinner, but would like to wear them during the day, possibly at breakfast and lunch? Will that be inappropriate?

1,000+ Club

You will certainly see jeans and sweatshirts on Princess during the day, just not at dinner. On a 7-day Princess cruise, 2 nights are formal (tuxes or suits & ties), but if you really don't want to dress up, there are alternatives to eating in the dining room. The other nights are "cruise casual attire" which means pants & open shirt, etc. But pretty much anything goes during the day.

duing the day, you will see lots of jeans and sweat shirts on all the cruises. NCL is still debating jeans in the dinings rooms at dinner. last year is was "no way", but this year it's been reported that some are allowed.

guess it depends on the seating hostess or the condition of the jeans. still no t-shirts/tank tops/flip flops for dinner in the dining rooms. you will see a lot of golf shirts/ kahkais.

i tried to tell my SIL that her father and hubby didn't need a suit, but she want to her favorite store and got them jackets and her a black dress for 99 cents each. (it's a second hand store that discounts on monday) her brother wore a open print shirt and slacks, even for "optional formal night". (better know as lobster night)

Sunshine Gal

Balderdash - Alaska is not just for old people. Sorry to politely disagree.

stired, I agree 100%, and commend you for being so polite. There is a little older crowd on all Alaskan cruises than there is in say the Caribbean, especially at spring break. I have cruised to Alaska on many different cruise lines for 15 years before I became "old". BTW, I am still a hot babe, but it just comes in flashes now!

If you are considering Celebrity, it is important to be aware of the on-going propulsion problems with Celebrity's Infinity and the Summit ships that effected many of last years Alaskan cruises.

Having tried Celebrity, HAL and Princess, I would recommend Princess with HAL a close second for a cruise to Alaska. I would recommend Alaska for anyone who loves fantastic scenery and total relaxation. Unless you have an overwhelming urge to party all night and lay on the beach all day to recover, Alaska is a truly a great experience.

Oops, sorry, yes I was referring to the dining room with the attire. I've been on over 10 NCL cruises in the last 3 years and all had people showing up in jeans in the dining room at dinner time. They overall are more casual than Princess. Also private tables are a given on NCL, extremely rare on Princess, and usually a wait if you want one. This was my experience on Princess anytime dining. Always, seated at a large table, small tables nowhere to be found. :)

Hmm, I cruised Alaska (on HAL) with my parents when I was 13 and had a blast, and I'm doing it on Princess in Sept with my husband--we're in our 30s. It's not about age, but about what you want to do & see on your vacation! From that perspective, the original poster's title is a little misleading, I guess--I don't think anyone who has responded has based their opinions on age; rather, they've been suggesting cruise lines that will match your dining & dressing needs. We don't like "clubbing" or kids, so cruising Alaska seems perfect to us! As was our HAL cruise last year in the Caribbean. Nary a child in sight....I prefer a more traditional cruise (& esp. dining experience) so my research has shown me that NCL isn't the line for me....

12-Year-Old Boy Dies After Falling From Balcony on a Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship

Photo of author

September 11, 2024

Harmony of the Seas

This is one of the news I never wanted to give you, but unfortunately, it has been confirmed that a 12-year-old boy has died after falling from a balcony on Harmony of the Seas .

The ship by Royal Caribbean was sailing to Galveston , and it was the end of the week-long cruise for the passengers on board.

The circumstances of the accident

According to initial reports, the boy fell from a balcony overlooking the inner part of the ship .

If you are familiar with the design of the ship, the boy fell from the cabins that directly overlook Central Park .

central park on harmony of the seas

According to some passengers, a group of children were playing just before the incident, and he may have tried to enter his room by climbing over the balcony .

Staff and doctors on the ship immediately rendered aid but there was nothing they could do for him .

Royal Caribbean spokesperson told PEOPLE :

We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our guests. Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.

What happens when a person falls off a cruise ship?

Unfortunately in this case the fall was in the inner part of the ship, but it is also very risky when one falls into the ocean .

That is why I always tell you to be very careful and not to climb on the balconies , even as a joke or for fun.

I explained in more detail why it’s dangerous in the article on what happens if you jump off a cruise ship . Take a look at it before you go on a cruise to understand how it works.

In addition, always check the 10 things you must never do in a cruise cabin .

Aurora Expeditions and Vantage Explorations bonus for customers.

Aurora’s Vantage Explorations turns one year old. Here’s what to expect next

Michelle Couch-Friedman

Consumer reporter and ombudsman

September 5, 2024

Today Aurora Expeditions’ Vantage Explorations turns one year old. In honor of this milestone, the cruise line is announcing new routes, a new ship, and a $3,000 booking bonus.

Here’s what’s next for Vantage Explorations and Aurora Expeditions.

How Vantage Explorations came to be

For those unfamiliar with how Vantage Explorations came to be, let me give a brief overview.

In June 2023, after months of speculation about what was going on, the Boston-based Vantage Deluxe World Travel (VDWT) suddenly canceled all its trips , fired its employees , and announced bankruptcy .

On the day of the filing, VDWT owed nearly 10,000 of its bewildered customers $108 million. The beleaguered tour operator also owed vendors, contractors and secured creditors $70 million.

From the start, it was clear that refunds would not be possible for the consumer victims of this bankruptcy.

However, there was a small ray of hope on the horizon for the VDWT customers.

Two companies competed to buy VDWT’s customer list. That list included over three million loyal people who had used the company during its 40-year history. The presumed winning bidder, United Travel, proposed to give each of the bankruptcy victims a one-time credit equal to just 20 percent of what they were owed by VDWT.

But when the bidding was over, the Australian-based Aurora Expeditions emerged as the winner. This was the best possible outcome for the customers.

Aurora Expeditions’ bid included terms that were considerably better for the VDWT victims:

  • Each customer would receive a future travel credit equal to 100 percent of what VDWT owed them at the time of the bankruptcy.
  • Customers can use travel credits to pay for up to 50 percent of an ocean cruise but just 20 percent of a river cruise ( (The river cruises are operated by a third party: VIVA Cruises).
  • Customers can continue to spend their credits on additional trips at the same rate until they are all gone or until the credits expire.
  • These credits have a generous five-year shelf life (Expiration date: Nov. 30, 2028).
  • They can be shared with friends and family, but can’t be sold.

You can read the full details of the purchase of the assets of Vantage Travel by Aurora Expeditions here .

One year ago today, Aurora Expeditions launched the U.S.-based Vantage Explorations to facilitate the use of those travel credits. During the past 12 months, the companies have been working diligently to gather feedback from the victims of this bankruptcy.

The details of today’s announcement are in response to that data. Aurora hopes to make spending those credits more appealing to the understandably shell-shocked victims.

Two questions repeatedly asked by travel credit holders

Surprisingly, even though we are 14 months past the bankruptcy announcement, I continue to receive emails and calls from confused former VDWT customers. The two most common questions I receive (and the to-the-point answers) are:

Question: How can I exchange my credits for a cash refund from Aurora Expeditions?

Answer: You can’t. Aurora Expeditions extended travel credits that have no cash value other than what they were intended for. Travelers holding these credits can redeem them with Vantage Explorations and take a trip with Aurora Expeditions.

Note: Vantage Explorations doesn’t directly operate any tours. All trips are with Aurora Expeditions.

Question: Isn’t Vantage Explorations the same company as before?

Answer: No, there is absolutely no affiliation between Vantage Explorations and the former company called Vantage Deluxe World Travel.

What travelers can expect from Vantage Explorations and Aurora Expeditions in 2024 and beyond

Now we can talk about the good news.

In honor of this birthday celebration, Vantage Explorations and Aurora Expeditions are making several important announcements.

1. A new ocean ship with solo cabins is on the way: The Douglas Mawson

A significant number of the 10,000 people with Vantage Explorations credits are solo travelers. This posed a problem since the current two ocean ships operated by Aurora Expeditions do not have solo cabins.

However, the brand new ship that’s on the way does.

Aurora Expeditions, Douglas Mawson, new cruise ship

The Douglas Mawson , named after the famed Australian explorer , has just 86 cabins (6 of those cabins designed specifically for solo travelers). This luxury cruise ship, with a heated outdoor pool, jacuzzis, and more, will take its passengers around the world in style.

Solo cabins on Aurora Expeditions all-new ocean ship, the Douglas Mawson.

Douglas Mawson offers four types of cabins with no solo supplements:

  • Aurora Stateroom Superior Single
  • Deck 3 (2 Portholes): 314, 316, 318
  • Deck 7: (French Balcony) 709
  • Aurora Stateroom Single
  • Deck 3: 322, 324
  • Double Occupancy Cabins Balcony A (Note: These can only be booked by solo travelers without a single supplement for sailings starting from April 2026)
  • Deck 4: 407, 409, 410 and 412.

Aurora Expeditions Douglas Mawson deck plan.

The Douglas Mawson is expected to join the Aurora fleet on December 1, 2025.

Its sister ships, the Sylvia Earle and the Greg Mortimer , will begin dedicating ten cabins per sailing to solo travelers for global sailings starting in April 2026.

As neither vessel has any accommodations designed for just one passenger, Aurora is earmarking the following ten cabins for solo travelers.

  • Balcony C cabins 611 and 614,
  • Balcony B cabins 606 and 603
  • Balcony A cabins 407,409, 410, 412, 607 and 610.

Catagory A cabin on Aurora Expeditions' Greg Mortimer.

2. New itineraries for Vantage Explorations customers traveling with Aurora

The average age of the victims of the VDWT bankruptcy is considerably older than the target customer of a typical expedition cruise line. That has been one of the primary complaints I’ve received over the past year from travelers hoping to spend their credits on a non-expedition adventure.

The new itineraries announced today aim to address that issue. Travelers who wish for a bit less physical action can choose trips in the Discovery and Explorations categories .

It’s worth noting that even on an expedition adventure with Aurora, there are always varying levels of activity. On my recent cruise aboard the Greg Mortimer on Aurora’s Jewels of the Arctic , the expedition team offered two to three styles of excursions each day. On Greenland and Svalbard, our leaders arranged strenuous hikes (five to seven miles over rough terrain) for some, shorter and less strenuous walks for others, and passive sight-seeing excursions in a zodiac for the rest.

Aurora Expeditions Greg Mortimer

So if a journey appeals to you, make sure to ask questions about the activities that will be offered during the cruise before rejecting an expedition outright.

3. Happy Birthday, Vantage Explorations! Here’s a present for the customers

Finally, Aurora Expeditions is offering its customers a gift in honor of Vantage Explorations’ birthday.

Starting today, travelers who book a new ocean cruise with Vantage Explorations will receive a $3,000 bonus in credits.

Here’s how the promotion will work:

  • As per the sale agreement, each Vantage Explorations customer can pay for up to 50 percent of their cruise using their cruise credits. That part will not change.
  • This promotion is only valid on trips booked between September 5 and December 5, 2024.
  • The $3,000 bonus credits will be part of your 50 percent travel credits payment.
  • You can use credits to pay the deposit on your cruise.
  • The promotion does not apply to river cruises as these are operated through a separate company (VIVA Cruises)

This part is a bit confusing so I’ll share this example.

Let’s say you book a solo cabin and the total cost of the cruise portion of your trip comes to $12,000. You’ll be eligible to pay for up to $6,000 of that cruise with travel credits. During this promotion, Vantage Explorations will issue you a bonus of $3,000 in travel credits. You’ll only need to spend $3,000 of your own travel credits to pay for half of your cruise. Ultimately, your cruise will cost you $6,000 in cash and $3,000 of your own credits for the $12,000 cruise.

It’s important to note that this $3,000 bonus applies to everyone. So even if you only have $500 in cruise credits, you’ll still get the bonus if you choose to book at this time with Vantage Explorations.

This offer is only good until December 5, 2024. After that, the bonus credits will no longer be available.

The bottom line

If you’ve been on the fence deciding whether or not to give Vantage Explorations a try, now may be the time to work out the numbers and see if it makes sense. With the new itineraries to the Mediterranean, the Arctic, Borneo, Tasmania and more, there seems to be something for everyone.

Of course, only you can decide if you should take the plunge and spend your credits. But make sure not to be swayed by misinformation or hype, which is, unfortunately, often carelessly spread on social media and elsewhere. Consider all the facts, and if you need clarification on any points, you can ask in our Facebook group or email me directly. I’m always happy to answer your questions.  ( Michelle Couch-Friedman , Consumer Rescue)

No kidding: These 12 cruises are the perfect multigenerational family vacation option

T he launch of Disney Cruise Line in 1998 was a game changer for family cruises. Now in its third decade of operation, Disney Cruise Line consistently tops the list of best cruise lines for families. And its newest ship (for now), Disney Wish , is unquestionably one of the best cruise ships for kids ever made. But Disney isn't the only major player in the family cruising space.

A host of other cruise lines, including Carnival Cruises , Princess , Norwegian , MSC , and Royal Caribbean , have helped usher in a new era of family vacations on cruise ships with amenities like kids clubs, water parks, stage shows, theatrical dining experiences, reduced fares for young children, and even kids sail free deals . And because the best cruise ships for kids are also great for grownups , you have plenty of options when it comes to the best family cruises.

NO HIDDEN FEES: 7 best all-inclusive cruise lines in the world

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

1. Disney Wish

Disney Cruise Line

The sheer volume of onboard entertainment options for families on Disney Cruise Line's newest ship, Disney Wish , takes things to a whole new level. From action-packed dinner-and-a-show experiences like Worlds of Marvel and Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure to the Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge , and Incredibles-themed inflatable obstacle course , you'll never run out of things to do.

BIG SAVINGS: Kids sail free: 7 cruise lines with kids cruise free deals this year

Sailings on the Disney Wish also include a stop at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay , which is always a highlight of any family cruise. Castaway Cay’s family beach is a great place for swimming, and you can rent bikes, kayaks, and snorkeling gear to see colorful tropical fish and perhaps even a sea turtle munching on seagrass.

2. Disney Magic

While every ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet has a claim to be among the best family cruises, the original DCL family cruise ship deserves a special mention: Disney Magic is the ship that launched Disney Cruise Line in 1998, and with DCL's constant improvements and upkeep, the ship doesn’t feel outdated at all. Pirates, princesses, superheroes, and a thrilling water slide with a three-story drop are just a few of the fun features that make this a kid-favorite ship on one of the best cruise lines for families. In 2013, Disney added the AquaDunk high-speed thrill slide and Marvel Avengers Academy kids club. In 2018, a Tangled dinner theater restaurant made its debut.

WATER WORLDS: 50 best cruise ship water parks for kids and tweens

As one of the smaller ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, Disney Magic can be a less overwhelming experience for younger kids and first-time cruisers, especially given the trend among family cruises to be bigger and louder with every new ship. (The fabulous Disney Wonder is similarly sized.) But there's more than one reason to consider a Disney Magic voyage in 2024. This year, the ship will be the first to sail to Disney Cruise Line’s newest private island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , in the Bahamas.

3. Disney Treasure

Making its debut in December 2024, Disney Cruise Line's sixth ship will be called Disney Treasure and it will be the ship for fans of the Disney theme parks. Venues inspired by classic attractions such as the Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea are among the highlights to look forward to when the ship sets sail. The sister ship of Disney Wish will also have a high-tech Worlds of Marvel dinner show and a theater-in-the-round dining experience, this time themed to Pixar’s Coco.

CAPTAIN MICKEY: 7 best Disney cruises for families in 2024

Disney Treasure will also feature a brand-new original Broadway-style production called "Disney The Tale of Moana" in the Walt Disney Theatre. Other shows performed on board will include "Beauty and the Beast" and "Disney Seas the Adventure." Best of all, Disney Treasure will sail seven-night itineraries to both the Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean. That means you can enjoy two distinct dinner shows in the Worlds of Marvel and Plaza de Coco restaurants, and all of the Broadway-style shows on stage during one family cruise.

4. Icon of the Seas

Royal Caribbean

A brand-new class of ship is heading to North America in 2024, and it starts with Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas in January. Among the many firsts for Icon of the Seas is the AquaDome, the largest glass and steel structure on any cruise ship, seven pools, six record-breaking waterslides, eight separate neighborhoods, 40 ways to drink and dine, four stages, and a three-level ultimate family townhouse. The innovative AquaDome is a peaceful oasis during the day and a vibrant hotspot at night with a 55-foot-tall water curtain and AquaTheater that debuts performances with divers, skateboarders, and robots.

FAMILY CRUISES: 5 best cruise ships to entertain your teen

Thrill-seekers will love Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea with six waterslides. There's also the Crown’s Edge, which is part skywalk, part ropes course, and 100 percent thrill ride where you can dangle 154 feet above the ocean. And, of course, you'll also find the Royal Caribbean staple FlowRider surf simulator and the Lost Dunes mini golf course. Those looking to take it easy should head to Chill Island, which features four pools spread over three decks with sweeping ocean views.

Fans of Royal Caribbean will enjoy the Royal Promenade with 15 restaurants, bars, and lounges; Central Park's open-air neighborhood filled with live plants and trees; and Surfside, the first neighborhood designed specifically for young families. The ship's seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean family cruises all stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay , the line’s award-winning private island. Families will find an array of activities on Perfect Day at CocoCay, such as its beaches and freshwater pool (included) and an expansive water park and zip line (available for an extra charge).

5. Wonder of the Seas

Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class ships debuted in early 2022 and instantly ignited buzz that they might be the most kid-friendly cruise ships in the entire world. At 1,188 feet long and 18 decks tall, there's plenty of room for families to spread out and find entertainment onboard the Wonder of the Seas . Two dedicated private teen spaces onboard make vacationing with teenagers a little easier. In fact, teens aged 16 and up can even enjoy a massive teens-only hot tub that literally protrudes over the edge of the ship on Wonder of the Seas' deck 15.

SCENIC VOYAGES: Everything you need to know about river cruises in the USA

Grade school kids and even the littlest ones have it pretty great, too. For big kids, there’s an enormous multiple-deck play area called Wonder Playscape . For the youngest passengers, there's the Adventure Ocean play area full of soft toys and games for toddlers. And a playground with climbing equipment gives them a space to work off their energy. Wonder of the Seas also has the most amazing family suites around. They come complete with two levels of space, an in-suite slide, table tennis, and plenty of room for the whole family.

6. Oasis of the Seas

When it launched in 2009, Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas was the largest ship in the world, accommodating more than 5,500 passengers per voyage and cementing the line's place among the best cruise lines for families. After a reimagining 10 years later, Oasis of the Seas is still a popular option for family cruises in 2024 with its Caribbean-inspired pool deck, rock climbing walls, and Perfect Storm trio of multistory waterslides. Among the many reasons that make Royal Caribbean one of the best cruise lines for families is that its Symphony of the Seas builds upon the strengths of the line’s other Oasis Class ships.

7. Norwegian Viva

Norwegian Cruise Line

What makes Norwegian one of the best cruise lines for families? For one thing, you’ll never hear "I’m bored" from kids. And with its three-story race track, two escape rooms, The Rush and The Drop dry slides, The Wave waterslide, immersive virtual reality games, Topgolf simulator, mini golf, waterpark, splash ground, and kids’ clubs, your family’s biggest problem on the Norwegian Viva might just be deciding how to balance all the activities with quiet relaxation.

GO ALL IN: These 6 cruise lines offer the best themed cruises

The Norwegian Viva arrived in North America in December 2023 and offers Caribbean cruises from San Juan, Puerto Rico, in early 2024 before heading to Europe through November. The ship's Observation Lounge has panoramic 180-degree views to soak in the scenery or take Insta-worthy photos on Oceanwalk’s glass walkway. After playing the day away in port or on the ship, your family can enjoy dinner followed by a live performance of Beetlejuice: The Musical, based on the cult-classic Tim Burton film.

8. Carnival Panorama

Carnival Cruise Line

One of Carnival Cruise Line ’s newer ships, the Carnival Panorama 's many kid-friendly features have already made it one of the best cruises for families. The Panorama has supervised kids programs in three different age categories, a massive aqua park, the popular SkyRide aerial attraction, SkyCourse ropes course, and the first SkyZone trampoline park at sea.

DON'T OVERPAY: How to save money on a Carnival Cruise (with or without kids)

In addition, Carnival's exclusive partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises provides "Seuss at Sea" experiences on family cruise vacations, such as Dr. Seuss Bookville, Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast, and the Seuss-a-palooza Parade. Based in Los Angeles, Carnival Panorama sails week-long round-trip cruises to the Mexican Riviera in 2024.

9. Caribbean Princess

Princess Cruises

Made famous by the classic '80s TV series "The Love Boat," Princess Cruises now hosts more than two million passengers each year. Kid-friendly Caribbean Princess underwent an extensive renovation in 2017 that boosted its family offerings to include Camp Discovery Youth and Teen Center, HD Movies Under the Stars, and the Reef Family Splash Zone (the line's first splash zone at sea).

MOVIES UNDER THE STARS: 11 best outdoor movie screens for your backyard staycation

Caribbean Princess will be 20 years old in 2024, but another extensive drydock refurbishment in 2022 has kept the ship from feeling dated. Other features that earn the Caribbean Princess a spot on my list of best family cruises include its partnership with Discovery Inc. for "Discovery at SEA" activities, which feature Animal Planet and Discovery Channel programming, the Stanley the Bear experience, and JrChef@Sea cooking classes. In summer 2024, Caribbean Princess heads to Southampton for a series of European cruises before heading back to Florida.

10. MSC Meraviglia

Unless you're a hardcore cruise family, MSC Cruises might be the largest cruise line you’ve never heard of. One of the leading cruise lines in Europe, South America, and other parts of the world, MSC is working hard to get a foothold in North America by offering great deals on family cruises. These include kids ages 18 and under sailing free on select departures , and young children ages two and under always sailing free.

FIRST-TIMERS: 19 things to know before your first cruise with kids

Family-friendly MSC Meraviglia launched in 2017 and it features seven different kids’ clubs for children from babies to age 17. Teens have their own space with a cinema, game room, and live stage. And Meraviglia’s Polar Aquapark has three different waterslides, including a high-speed “champagne flute,” that easily make it one of the best cruises for families. Families can play together in the vast entertainment area that includes an MSC Formula One Racing Simulator, a full-sized bowling alley with two lanes, an interactive XD cinema, a flight simulator, and a video games arcade. There’s also a Sportsplex facility for basketball, tennis, squash, volleyball, pickleball, mini golf, and five-a-side soccer.

11. MSC Seascape

MSC Cruises

The U.S. flagship of the MSC Cruises brand, MSC Seascape was designed with families in mind and offers plenty of options for onboard entertainment. The cruise line's partnership with LEGO includes a DUPLO room for children ages three to six and a second LEGO room for kids ages seven to 11 with the opportunity to earn a LEGO Master Builder certificate. Teens have three different themed areas to engage with their peers.

BRING THE LITTLE ONES: 10 toddler-friendly vacations that are just as much fun for parents

You have to check out Robotron on these family cruises. Robotron is a robotic arm ride that sends you 173 feet above the sea, giving you a unique 360-degree view as you're moved in different directions and flipped upside down. At night, Robotron offers a personalized DJ experience where you can curate your musical journey with colors and music preferences.

MSC Seascape sails from Miami on the Bahamas and Caribbean family cruises, including a visit to MSC Cruises' private Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Ocean Cay features two miles of white sand beaches and a variety of family-friendly activities such as snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and swimming. Some family cruises dock overnight at Ocean Cay, allowing you to watch the spectacular Lighthouse light show.

12. Celebrity Equinox

Celebrity Cruises

An upscale cruise line with prices to match, Celebrity Cruises appeals to families with older children or multigenerational groups looking for luxurious family cruises. Celebrity Equinox is not the newest ship in the line (its inaugural sailing was in 2009), but this kid-friendly cruise ship received an extensive overhaul as part of the "Celebrity Revolution" in 2019 and continues to impress with its family cruises in 2024.

COUPLES CRUISES: 7 best cruise lines for couples (and their most romantic voyages)

Celebrity's Camp at Sea kids' program offers a diverse and constantly changing series of activities so that it’s "never the same camp twice." And Celebrity Equinox partners with Miami’s Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science to offer STEM programming on topics such as the importance of plankton to the Earth’s oceans. Other kid-friendly activities on Celebrity’s family cruises include hot glass blowing classes and demonstrations, as well as lawn games such as croquet and bocce on the real grass of the Lawn Club.

San Juan cruise port guide: Top things to see and do in Puerto Rico

Kristy Tolley

Editor's Note

Puerto Rico offers a host of lures for cruise travelers — rich history, stunning beaches, natural beauty and fantastic cuisine among them. The island's capital city, San Juan, is a popular port of call for a variety of operators, including Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises , Royal Caribbean, Holland America , Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line , MSC Cruises and Crystal.

Additionally, San Juan is a departure port for several cruise lines. Royal Caribbean, Viking , Virgin Voyages , Norwegian and Princess sail round-trip itineraries from San Juan. Cruisers who embark in Puerto Rico 's capital city will likely fly into Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU), 3 miles southeast of downtown in the neighborhood of Isla Verde. There are frequent, daily connections from the U.S., Canada and Europe. The airport is about 7 miles from the cruise port (or about a 15-minute drive).

San Juan is a modern metropolis with upscale dining and shopping. Its numerous attractions make arriving a day or two early a rewarding option for travelers whose ships home port in the city. Points and miles hotels near the San Juan cruise port are plentiful, too. Caribe Hilton, Residence Inn San Juan Isla Verde, Aloft San Juan and San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino are a few to consider.

If your next Caribbean cruise adventure stops at the San Juan cruise port, let this be your guide for how to spend your day ashore.

San Juan cruise port overview

best cruise ships for 50 year olds

3 things TPG loves about the San Juan cruise port

  • A walkable historic district
  • Delicious local cuisine and a thriving rum scene
  • Rich cultural attractions from 500-year-old forts and structures to art and history museums

What we could do without

  • Although the historic district is walkable, cobblestone streets and narrow sidewalks make it challenging for those with mobility issues.
  • Old San Juan can be crowded in peak cruise season.

Arrival details

The San Juan cruise port is one of the Caribbean's busiest. The port can accommodate up to nine ships a day and often hosts at least seven at once per day.

The Old San Juan Piers are at Marina Street, at the center of the historic district. The cruise port is within easy walking distance to many of the city's significant historic and cultural sites, including the iconic San Felipe del Morro fort (commonly known as El Morro). The port features modern terminal buildings, and passengers will find tours and transportation staged nearby.

Pier 1 was primarily used by Azamara , Windstar Cruises , Silversea Cruises and Seabourn . However, the pier is currently out of commission until the foreseeable future, according to the cruise port.

Pier 3 mainly serves Royal Caribbean and its enormous Oasis Class ships. Norwegian, Virgin, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises also dock here.

Pier 4 is used by Carnival Cruise Line, but MSC Cruises and Holland America also dock here. The terminal features a two-story building that houses a souvenir and snack shop.

San Juan's Pan American Pier is situated south of the Old San Juan district of Isla Grande and mainly serves larger cruise vessels of lines like Princess Cruises , Celebrity and Disney Cruise Line . It's about a 10- to 15-minute drive to or from Old San Juan, so you'll want to take a taxi or cruise line shuttle (if provided).

Most ships call at the port for up to eight hours, giving cruisers time to explore several Puerto Rico highlights. Ships arrive in San Juan as early as 7 a.m. and sail late in the evening.

Ships that home port in San Juan typically depart as late as 7 or 8 p.m. If you're taking a round-trip sailing that leaves from San Juan, check your cruise line's boarding documents to confirm which pier you'll need to get to on embarkation day.

Top things to do in San Juan cruise port

best cruise ships for 50 year olds

Puerto Rico's historic capital of San Juan offers cruisers a wide selection of port call diversions. Much of San Juan's interesting historical sites and museums are near the cruise port, including San Cristobal and El Morro forts, La Fortaleza and the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Additionally, tons of locally owned shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants await visitors.

You'll also find a bevy of bars, restaurants, craft shops and boutiques within San Juan's Condado and Isla Verde districts. The Condado neighborhood is less than a 10-minute taxi drive from the cruise port, while Isla Verde is about 15 minutes away. Here are a few ways cruisers can spend their day exploring San Juan.

Old San Juan walking tour

You don't have to be a history buff to enjoy the more than 500-year-old walled city of Old San Juan. Its rainbow-hued Spanish colonial architecture, towering forts that overlook the Caribbean Sea and charming cobblestone streets beg exploration. The city is replete with attractions worth exploring either on your own or through a guided tour.

The historic district is fairly compact, so you can make the most of your DIY walking tour without rushing. Additionally, you can use your phone's GPS or Google Maps if you need to. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, so phone service from most major U.S. carriers works here (and American visitors don't need an international plan to make calls).

You can easily fill your time in port with visits to forts like the abovementioned San Cristobal and El Morro. Both are part of the 27-acre San Juan National Historic Site, which also includes Fort Saint John of the Cross and most of the city walls. In addition to providing spectacular views of both the city and sea, highlights here include cannon rooms, a bunker, a dungeon, a plaza, an extensive tunnel system and two observation posts that were added during World War II. Entrance cost is $10 per person, and children 15 and younger are admitted free.

While you're by the fort, make use of the breezes and expansive lawn at El Morro to fly a kite. Didn't pack one? No problem. Many San Juan shops sell them for just this purpose.

Another Old San Juan landmark that should be on your radar is La Fortaleza, the oldest governor's mansion in the Western Hemisphere. It still serves as the official residence and office of Puerto Rico's governor. Free guided tours are offered on weekdays between 8:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and include the mansion's Moorish gardens, chapel and dungeon.

In the heart of Old San Juan, the Gothic-style Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is one of the city's oldest buildings, dating back to 1521. It's home to stunning frescoes and stained glass windows. It also holds the tomb of Spanish explorer and Puerto Rico's first governor, Juan Ponce de Leon, as well as the glass-encased mummified remains of St. Pio, a Roman martyr killed for his faith. The cathedral is still an operational church, and there's no charge to enter (but consider leaving a donation to help with restoration work).

A guided culinary tour is a fantastic way to try several of San Juan's best restaurants. It's not just about the food, either. Tours are led by locals who share the history of the communities and people who live here. You'll gain a deeper understanding of the culture that inspired the dishes you'll enjoy during your time in Puerto Rico.

Often called "The Rum Capital of the World," Puerto Rico produces 70% of the rum sold in the U.S. The island's rum production dates back to the early 16th century when Spaniards brought sugar cane crops from Hispaniola (today, the Dominican Republic). For a taste of Puerto Rico's rich rum history, book a tour or mixology class at one of the distilleries. You don't need to be a rum connoisseur to appreciate the enduring mark the spirit has made on Puerto Rico's narrative.

A guided tour of the family-founded Bacardi Rum Distillery offers a historic view of San Juan and Puerto Rico through its sugar cane industry and rum-making heritage. You'll learn all about the rum-making process, from raw cane to molasses to the spirit, as well as sample the finished product. After the tour, peruse the on-site gift shop and museum or grab a bite at the facility's adjoining restaurant.

Centrally located in Old San Juan, La Casita de Rones is the flagship store of Rums of Puerto Rico, the marketing extension of the island's Department of Economic Development and Commerce. Here, you can pair signature rum-based cocktails with authentic Puerto Rican tapas and dishes. The on-site shop is well stocked with glassware, bar accessories, apparel and rum-inspired souvenirs.

Just about 22 miles west of the cruise port, San Juan Artisan Distillers is Puerto Rico's only working sugar cane plantation estate and distillery. Many of the fruit-infused spirits are made from locally sourced fruits. Tour guides offer insight into the rum-making process and showcase the company's dedication to sustainability. A tour also includes a sampling of rums crafted by the distillery.

From art to history, various museums in and around San Juan offer an eclectic perspective of Puerto Rico's culture and roots.

The Museum of the Americas is on the second floor of Old San Juan's historic Ballaja Barracks, a former military barracks used by Spanish soldiers in the 1800s. The museum explores the American experience spanning from 1492 through today with a comprehensive look at Puerto Rican and Latin American culture and heritage. It holds a beautifully curated collection of archaeological relics, pottery and art from the Americas, Africa and the Caribbean, as well as revolving exhibits by local artists.

In San Juan's lively Santurce neighborhood, the 130,000-square-foot Museum of Art of Puerto Rico is one of the Caribbean's largest and teems with more than 1,000 works of renowned Puerto Rican artists, including classical and modern masters like Francisco Oller, Rafael Tufiño and Antonio Martorell. Spend a few tranquil moments wandering through the museum's sculpture garden, where lush plants and bubbling ponds provide an idyllic environment for reflection.

Make time to visit the Casa Blanca Museum, built by Puerto Rico's first governor, Juan Ponce de Leon. Although the governor died before he could move in, his family occupied the home for 250 years. A tour provides a peek into the life of modern Puerto Rico's founding family.

Popular San Juan excursions

best cruise ships for 50 year olds

Situated about 45 minutes south of San Juan, El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. A hike through this 28,000-acre natural wonderland is a bucket-list adventure. The forest is home to hundreds of native plant species and almost 200 kinds of wildlife, including Puerto Rico's iconic coqui frog and one of the planet's most endangered birds, the Puerto Rican parrot.

We recommend bringing a rain poncho, sunscreen and bug spray, and wearing comfortable, waterproof shoes. Also, pack food and water (unless you're with your ship's cruise excursion that covers meals and beverages).

Horseback riding

A handful of tour companies offer horseback riding excursions not too far from the cruise port, with transportation to and from your ship. Outfitters tend to cater their rides to all levels, including young children, which makes it a good excursion for families. You'll find tours to take you along beaches or on mountain trails (or both on some excursions).

Bioluminescent bay

If your cruise ship leaves in the evening, consider booking a bioluminescent bay kayak excursion for a rare opportunity to see one of the world's most magical natural phenomena. Phosphorescent microscopic organisms present in the water glow when disturbed, so a nighttime kayak tour in these glittering waters can offer an other-worldly experience.

There are only five bioluminescent bays in the world, and three of them are in Puerto Rico — Mosquito Bay in Vieques, Laguna Grande in Fajardo and La Parguera in Lajas. Most cruise excursions go to Laguna Grande.

Snorkeling excursions

Cruisers have a good selection of guided snorkeling tours to choose from, both through their cruise ship or independent operators. Tour lengths vary, from an under-two-hour guided snorkel with turtles in the waters off Guaynabo (a suburb of San Juan) to an eight-hour excursion that visits both Flamenco and Culebra beaches on two small islands east of mainland Puerto Rico.

Best San Juan beaches near the cruise port

best cruise ships for 50 year olds

Many of Puerto Rico's best beaches are on the island's eastern and western coasts, beyond San Juan's metro area. However, a few local beaches are worth checking out during your day in port.

Condado Beach and Isla Verde Beach are popular options for cruise passengers, thanks to their proximity to the cruise port. Condado Beach is less than 2 miles from the port, while Isla Verde Beach is just over 7 miles away. Both beaches provide convenient access to water sports vendors (jet skiing, kayaking and paddle boarding), bustling restaurants and shopping.

Bordering Old San Juan and the modern Condado District, picturesque El Escambron beach is framed by the city's historic fortifications and modern structures. The beach is within Tercer Milenio Park, which offers recreational activities, including stand-up paddleboarding.

Farther afield, Luquillo Beach is considered one of Puerto Rico's best public beaches. It's just over 33 miles (or about an hour's drive) from the San Juan cruise port. Calm waters make for ideal swimming, kayaking and other activities. Additionally, it's near El Yunque, so some tour operators offer full-day beach and rainforest excursions.

How to get around San Juan on your own

On foot: Several of the island's major sights are within walking distance of the cruise piers, although it's simple to book a tour of local sites through your cruise line.

Taxi: You can find "Taxi Turisticos" right outside the cruise ship terminal. Trips around the San Juan area are metered fares, which are fixed based on zones. All cruise ship piers are within Zone 4, which is $21 for a one-way fare.

Bus and light rail: Public transportation is available throughout the San Juan metro area, with a network of 30 bus routes. A light rail line (Tren Urbano) connects three municipalities (San Juan, Guaynabo and Bayamon). The bus fare is 75¢. One light rail trip costs $1.50. You must purchase a transit pass at any Tren Urbano station to use either buses or the train.

The bus can take you to a handful of tourist spots like the University of Puerto Rico Botanical Garden and the Puerto Rico Museum of Art. However, you're probably better off taking a taxi for a direct (and less crowded) drive.

Bike: Visitors can rent bikes at establishments that are within walking distance of the cruise piers. Try Rent the Bicycle at 100 Muelle Street. A daily rental is about $32, or rent by the hour (around $10).

Car: You can rent a car if you plan to explore beyond the San Juan metro area. However, if you're staying within San Juan and Old San Juan for the day, it's easy to explore on foot, by bike or by taxi.

San Juan restaurants near the cruise port

best cruise ships for 50 year olds

Puerto Rico is a prime destination for foodie travelers — its cuisine is a vibrant fusion of West African, Spanish, indigenous Taíno and American influences. Add to that a touch of Creole cooking (known as cocina criolla ), similar to Cuban and Dominican cuisine. The island boasts a legacy of diverse cultural influences and an inspired, chef-driven focus on native ingredients. From no-frills eateries to gourmet restaurants, San Juan provides a variety of ways to sample authentic dishes.

Mofongo, the much-loved national dish, is deep-fried mashed plantains served with a side of seafood or meat and chicken broth soup. Santaella and Cayo Caribe are among the best places to try mofongo in San Juan.

Pork is another key ingredient of Puerto Rican cuisine, especially in the form of lechón, a whole pig roasted over a fire for at least four hours. Around an hour's drive south of San Juan, you'll find loads of lechoneras along the Ruta de Lechon (Pork Highway). These rustic, open-fire joints line the road and serve up wood-roasted, pig-on-a-stick. Grab a seat at a picnic table, tuck into a plate and wash it down with a cold local beer. If you'd rather stay in San Juan for the day, you won't have any difficulty finding a restaurant that serves roasted pork.

Other Puerto Rican dishes we recommend include bacalaitos (codfish fritters), aguacate relleno (avocado filled with creamy garlic shrimp) and empanadillas (like an empanada but with less dough). Snag a table at time-tested standouts like El Jibaritoocal, La Garita, La Bombonera or Princesa — Cocina Cultura for authentic local cuisine.

Need to cool off during a hot day in Puerto Rico (or just want a sweet treat)? Enjoy a refreshing paleta, a creamy, fruity frozen dessert on a stick made with natural ingredients.

If you're in the mood for gourmet fare, head to the elegant Condado Vanderbilt Hotel for a meal at 1919, considered the island's best fine-dining restaurant. Executive chef Juan Jose Cuevas worked at the Michelin-starred Blue Hill in New York and is one of Puerto Rico's farm-to-table pioneers.

For cocktails lovers, it's worth noting that Puerto Rico is the birthplace of the iconic piña colada (the island's national drink). Most theories place its invention in San Juan, though the exact location is often disputed. Some claim it was first created in 1954 at the Caribe Hilton Hotel. Others believe it originated at Barrachina restaurant in 1963 (and a plaque at the restaurant's entrance proclaims it). You can't go wrong sampling a pina colada at either location. Or, try one at both and decide which is your favorite.

San Juan cruise port shopping

Old San Juan teems with locally run shops that offer handmade crafts, colorful clothing, hand-rolled cigars, artwork and Puerto Rican coffee and spices. Along the cobblestone streets, you'll also find art galleries and stores selling traditional vejigante masks. A vejigante is a folklore demon in Puerto Rican culture. The brightly colored horned masks are used in carnival celebrations.

Among them is Puerto Rican Arts and Crafts. This family-owned shop opened in 1981 and is still in the original building on Fortaleza Street. It's chock-full of items crafted by Puerto Rican artisans and creatives. You can browse a selection of ceramics, jewelry, hand carvings and authentically farmed Puerto Rican coffees.

Also on Fortaleza Street, Ole Puerto Rico is a family-run, old-world hat emporium that has been a San Juan mainstay since 1977. Friendly artisans will craft a custom-made Panama hat for you while you wait — just choose the style of hat and your preferred headband.

Savor a taste of Puerto Rico after your cruise with a souvenir from Spicy Caribbee. Opened in 1988, the shop is tucked away in one of Old San Juan's cobblestone alleyways on Cristo Street. Here, you'll find a solid collection of sauces, seasonings, jams, chutneys and tea that were acquired locally or within the Caribbean. Spicy Caribbee-branded products like Fuego Hot Sauce and Guava Jam are particularly popular. You'll also find cookbooks, candles, perfume, soap and other items here.

Cigar aficionados should not miss a visit to Don Collins Cigars, also on Cristo Street. Founded in 1506, it's the Caribbean's oldest surviving cigar factory. Cigars are handmade using organically grown and harvested Puerto Rican tobacco. Knowledgable staff members help guide you in finding your ideal cigar, which you can pair with a Puerto Rican rum or beer as you relax in the shop's lounge.

Free things to do near the San Juan cruise port

best cruise ships for 50 year olds

Tour the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist . As previously mentioned, the cathedral is free to tour. However, we recommend leaving a donation to assist with ongoing restoration efforts.

Feed the birds at Pigeon Park. This public park in Old San Juan is a nice resting spot with benches that look out over the ocean. Visitors can also feed the army of pigeons that make their home there. You can bring your own food to share (free) or buy birdseed from a small kiosk within the park. Note, if you are the least bit weirded out by birds, you might want to skip this one.

Stroll along the picturesque Promenade of the Princess. This flat and easily accessible walkway runs parallel to the water, stretching from the cruise port to El Morro Fort. It's lined with antique streetlamps, trees and benches. You'll also pass by a variety of food vendors and street performers. The walkway's end is punctuated by the compelling Raices Fountain. The water feature and sculpture depict Puerto Rico's African, Spanish and Taíno heritage.

Visit the Lighthouse Art Gallery and Cafe. The world's first physical NFT art gallery is free to visit (though you can donate). The gallery offers two floors with art-projected walls and digital art canvases, with rotating exhibits from featured artists. After perusing the gallery, pop into the bar or cafe for a quick pick-me-up.

Tour the San Juan Museum. Housed within a historic building that once served as Old San Juan's main public market, this museum features cultural, historic and artistic exhibits. Admission is free, but the museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Bottom line

San Juan combines historic architecture and attractions that embody the island's rich legacy and historic past. Visitors can also absorb authentic Latin and American culture through local cuisine, family-owned shops and various art and history museums.

Opportunities for exploration are almost limitless and likely too numerous to see during one port call. However, that's what return trips are for. If there was ever a must-disembark port of call, San Juan is it.
