Which Port in Athens?

I'm booked on a cruise on the Celestyal Olympia in August. My documents and their website say that we're departing and arriving in Lavrion, but Cruisemapper says Piraeus is where they are scheduled to be. They are in very different parts of town, so I'm not sure which one is right.

According to the Celestyal website, the departure port is Lavrion.

Cruisemapper could be wrong or haven't updated their website.

You can always contact Celestyal customer support if you are still unsure.

Just a wild guess, but your cruise documents are official.....and third party web-pages are not.  Lavrion is a cruise port for Olympia

Celestyal Ready for April Start, New Terminal at Lavrion

Celestyal Cruises has announced that the 2021 season will set sail on April 24th with the seven-night Idyllic Aegean itinerary on the new Celestyal Experience.

Guests currently booked on the cancelled March and earlier April voyages will have the option to receive a refundable Future Cruise Credit (FCC) equivalent to 100 percent of the amount paid plus an additional non-refundable bonus FCC equal to 20 percent of the actual cruise fare paid.

As an added element of flexibility and recognizing the prolonged effects of the pandemic, Celestyal has announced that it will allow guests currently holding FCCs as well as guests about to receive FCCs, as a result of the new recommencement date, the opportunity to apply the FCC towards Celestyal’s soon-to-be-announced 2023 itineraries in addition to 2021 and 2022 itineraries.   

The company also announced that it will move its operations for the three- and four-night Iconic Aegean itinerary from the Piraeus Port (Athens) to the Lavrion Port & Marina (Athens), located just 16 miles from the Athens Airport and similar driving time from the city center as the Piraeus Port.

The first four-night Iconic Aegean will sail on April 26th, while the three-night Iconic Aegean sailings will now sail on April 30. 

Celestyal will operate from a new, dedicated terminal facility at Lavrion, which will provide an enhanced and expedited embarkation and disembarkation experience, according to a press release.

The dedicated terminal will allow for the thorough implementation of the comprehensive and enhanced health protocols, while ensuring that Celestyal’s intensive three-and-four night itineraries operate flawlessly within their time sensitive schedule.

“We are thrilled to be able to announce the exciting news of our new and convenient departure port of  Lavrion Port & Marina with its dedicated terminal facility opening to welcome our guests for the first sailing of our well established three and four-night Iconic Aegean itineraries for the 2021 season,” said Leslie Peden, chief commercial officer.

“In keeping with Celestyal’s aspiration of providing more immersive experiences, Lavrion is an historic small Greek town on the outskirts of the greater Athens area and just a ten-minute drive from the world renowned site of the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. The port and city of Lavrion is definitely one more interesting destination worth discovering. We hope that having to move the start of our scheduled season doesn’t inconvenience our guests too much. Our top priority is always the well-being of our guests, and we want to ensure that they receive our award-winning Celestyal experience, visiting all the unique destinations we call upon in the region.”

The port of Lavrion is located on the eastern coast of the Attica peninsula, about 60 kilometers southeast of Athens. It is one of the key ports in Greece, serving both cruise ships and ferries.

The port is in walking distance from the center (15 min). Cruise lines often offer shuttles for around 3 Euro. A new terminal building has just been completed, anticipating more cruise ships in the future.

Sightseeing:

The town of Lavrion or Lavrio on the tip of the Atikki Peninsula is not featured prominently in very many guidebooks about Greece even though it has the oldest and biggest ancient amphitheater in the country and a mysterious giant hole that would be an attraction to Fortians and seekers of unexplained phenomena if they knew about it.

Although Lavrion is not a tourist town, it still allows for an hour or so a pleasant stroll or a drink at the local, reasonable priced, sidewalk cafe.

Lavrio has a long history as a mining town. Its silver mines were source of wealth to Classical Athens.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

At the port of Lavrio where the cruise ships dock, you will admire an area that was extended and remodeled in the last few years, as also happened with the refurbishment of its marina and the renewed roads that lead towards Athens and the airport.

Buses to Athens run every 30 minutes. The trip takes 90 minutes and costs 5.50 Euro.

Nearby Places:

Don't forget to visit the Temple at Sounion. Across from Lavrion is the former prison island of Makronissos. Visit the nearby island of Kea too. South of Lavrio, only 7 kilometers away.

Review of bella fortuna.

The 1982-built Bella Fortuna cruise ship (fka Celestyal Olympia/Louis Olympia) was initially named "Song of America" and owned by RCCL-Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines . Until 2024, this traditionally designed passenger liner was owned by Louis Group and operated by the Greek travel brand Celestyal Cruises (2014-rebranded from Louis Cruises).

The vessel (IMO number 7927984) is currently Liberia- flagged (MMSI 636023663) and registered in Monrovia . Before 2020, it was Cyprus-flagged (MMSI 209691000) and registered in Limassol .

History - construction and ownership

In April 2012, after operating as "Thomson Destiny" (under charter for Thomson Cruises UK ), the ship was given a new name (Louis Olympia) by the shipowner Louis Cruises. During the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia, Louis ship Olympia served as a floating hotel. In 2014 Louis Cruises announced the launching of a new authentic Greek-experience cruise travel brand.

Olympia's debut improved Celestyal's identity as a domestic travel brand and a specialist in Greek and Turkey passenger shipping operations.

In November 2023, Celestyal Cruises acquired AIDAaura/renamed Celestyal Discovery  and announced that the ship will replace Celestyal Olympia, starting revenue voyages in March 2024. The company soon confirmed that the 41-year-old Olympia is sold for  scrapping .

In January 2024, the vessel was renamed to "Bella Fortuna" and its flag state/registry was changed from Malta/ Valletta  (MMSI 229051000) to Liberia. Reportedly, it was acquired by a Turkey-based cruise company.

The 41-year-old Celestyal Olympia left her homeport in Greece ( Lavrion ) on January 8th and arrived in Turkey ( Cesme ) on January 9th. After being docked at Port Cesme for ~4 months, Bella Fortuna left Turkey on April 26th.

Decks and Cabins

Bella Fortuna/Celestyal Olympia staterooms (724 total) include 9 Balcony, 298 Inside, 2 wheelchair-accessible. The ship's max passenger capacity is 1664. Of all cabins, 9 are Suite-grade accommodations, each with a private step-out balcony.

The boat has 418 outside staterooms (including the 9 suites) and 298 Interior cabins. Because of the vessel's old design, rooms as sizes and types vary greatly. The total number of cabin categories is 15.

The boat has 10 decks , of which 9 are passenger-accessible and 7 with cabins.

Shipboard facilities and amenities

With three eating outlets to choose from, cruisers might enjoy the sumptuous Greek and Mediterranean kitchen as well as 24-hour room service.

Aegean Restaurant is the main dining room onboard Celestyal Olympia. The venue is complimentary, offers traditional Greek cuisine specialties, and also has an a-la-carte menu for dinner. The MDR restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Leda Casual Dining is a buffet-style venue for alfresco dining with an outdoor seating area. Continental Breakfast (7-8:30 am) and Afternoon Tea (4-5 pm) are also served here.

Another Dining Room is the Aura Grill.

Passengers might also enjoy a huge array of facilities and diverse onboard activities, all with the relief of a modern and sophisticated cruise liner.

Celestyal Olympia Lounges & Bars include Mast Bar, Horizons Bar, Eclipse Bar, Argo Bar, Helios Pool Bar, Muses Lounge, Selene Lounge, Internet Cafe.

The Muses Lounge is the theater/main show lounge with tiered seating and a dance floor. The grand-style entertainment program offers live music and dance shows, as well as a magician and acrobatic performances.

The Casino Royale, served by the Argo Bar, offers gaming tables and several slot machines. There is also a Video Arcade, two large swimming pools and five bars securing full amusement at sea.

A completely equipped Olympian Gym, badminton, basketball and table tennis are accessible together with the Ocean's Spa for treatments and saunas.

The Kids' Club, duty-free stores, travel value shop (Agora), library and Internet corner complete the superb experience offered on board this stylish cruise liner.

The ship also has an Infirmary/Medical Center, Sana Beauty Center, Photo Gallery.

Itineraries

Celestyal Olympia's itinerary program was based on 3 and 4-day cruises to the Greek islands and Turkey. For Celestyal, Olympia operated roundtrips leaving from homeports in Greece ( Piraeus-Athens ) and Turkey ( Kusadasi-Ephesus ).

In 2019, the liner started year-round operations for Celestyal Cruises, as opposed to the previous charter options.

The company's/ship's Eastern Mediterranean deployment included two new itineraries - "Eclectic Aegean" and "Three Continents" ( Holy Land and Turkey/ Istanbul ) - in addition to the Adriatic Sea voyages (7-day roundtrips from homeport Venice Italy ) which were scheduled only seasonally (during winter).

In April 2021, Celestyal scheduled for Olympia to restart voyages in the Eastern Mediterranean starting with the new "Legendary Archipelago" itinerary in the period June 28th - August 30th (2021). The 7-night roundtrip from Lavrion -Athens visited Thessaloniki , Mykonos , Santorini , Crete ( Agios Nikolaos ), Rhodes , Cyprus ( Limassol ). All-inclusive prices started from USD 1020 (EUR 860) per person with double occupancy.

Following this Aegean mini-season, after August 30th, Olympia's itinerary program had to continue with the prescheduled 3-4-night (Lavrion roundtrip) itineraries "Iconic Aegean" and "Iconic Discovery".

Celestyal's new/exclusive cruise terminal at Port Lavrion (homeport) is just ~25 km (16 mi) from Athens Airport.

However, due to the Coronavirus crisis, the Celestyal ship Olympia was paused for two years (March 2020 through April 2022) restarting on April 29th.

The next table shows Olympia's last voyage for Celestyal, in November 2023. The ship's entire schedule for 2024 was transferred to Celestyal Discovery.

The vessel (Wartsila Hietalahti yard/hull number 111180) has volume 37773 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 5000 tons, max draught 7 m. The powerplant is based on Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 8ZL40/48) with combined output 16,48 MW (22095 hp). The registered shipowner is DESTINY TRADING OPCO LLC, while the registered manager is OPTIMUM SHIPMANAGEMENT SERVICE.

MS Celestyal Olympia ship was built as "MS Song of America" for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines . In April 2012, after the Thomson Cruises charter operations (as Thomson Destiny), the ship was renamed Louis Olympia and operated by the owner Louis Cruises.

Fun fact is, that during the Winter Olympics 2014 in Russia, Louis Olympia ship served as a floating hotel- together with Thomson Spirit and Grand Holiday (now Magellan) .

In September 2014, Louis Cruises announced the company is launching a new brand with an authentic Greece cruising experience. In 2015, the two ships, Louis Olympia and Louis Cristal, were branded Celestyal Cruises and renamed, respectively, Celestyal Olympia and Celestyal Crystal .

In 2015, a new (chartered) ship was added to the fleet - Celestyal Odyssey (now Blue Dream Star) . In 2016, the company purchased Celestyal Nefeli/MS Gemini .

Celestyal Olympia refurbishment 2016 review

During the ship's drydock refurbishment in 2016 (done in Piraeus-Athens Greece ) to a total of 21 Oceanview cabins were added balconies and the staterooms were upgraded to Junior Suites (category SBJ-Balcony Junior Suite). The ship also has 9 Balcony Suites (SB). Each of the new cabin verandas extends 1,4 m (4,5 ft) from the ship's bulkhead and has a length between 2,8-5,8 m (9-19 ft).

All cabins and all public areas were also renovated and upgraded. Hotel amenities upgrades were also implemented, along with general maintenance works.

Celestyal Launches 1st Cruise Out of Lavrio Homeport for 2022

Ready for a strong cruise season ahead, Celestyal Cruises   launched its first departure from the port of Lavrio on Friday, the third of its homeports, the company announced during a special event on board the “Celestyal Olympia”.

The “Celestyal Olympia” set off for the Iconic Aegean cruise as part of the company’s popular three- and four-day cruises visiting Mykonos, Kusadasi, Patmos, and Santorini twice a week, and on Wednesdays to also include Rhodes.

Earlier this month, during the official launch of the 2022 cruise season, Celestyal announced that it would be homeporting once again in Thessaloniki ,  Lavrio  and Piraeus .

Celestyal will be operating 62 cruises out of Lavrio this year with the last departure scheduled for November 14, the company said.

Shipping Minister Yiannis Plakiotakis

Speaking during Friday’s event, attended by government and municipal officials, cruise associations and port authorities, Shipping Minister Yiannis Plakiotakis referred to works being carried out to transform Lavrio into a cruise and sailing hub.

“The prospects of the port of Lavrio are excellent and it is certain that in the coming years it will record high growth rates, especially in the critical sector of maritime tourism,” he said, referring to modernization efforts which include among others the construction of seven floating piers to accommodate yachts and 195 new berths to cover needs in areas of high demand.

“Through Celestyal Cruises, the port of Lavrio is now on the map of international cruise ports as the company’s ships accommodate passengers from 140 countries,” said Plakiotakis.

Speaking during the same event, Deputy Tourism Minister Sofia Zacharaki highlighted the successful recovery of the cruise sector, which is a ministry priority.

“Greek cruise activity this year is clearly on track to overcome not only the consequences of the crisis but also the most optimistic predictions made before the Covid-19 pandemic. At many ports we have higher performance even compared to 2019, the milestone year for Greek tourism,” she said.

Zacharaki went on to add that “at least 60 cruise ships will be departing from Lavrio this year with some 70,000 passengers”.

The minister added that the port of Lavrio can evolve into a leading hub connecting the mainland with the Greek islands thanks to its proximity to the Cyclades islands.

“It can also contribute to the decongestion of the large port of Piraeus . Especially for those travelers who are now following the growing trend of island hopping, Lavrio is an ideal choice,” said Zacharaki.

Speaking at a Celestyal Cruises event last year, Zacharaki told GTP Headlines that Greece was taking steps to accelerate port infrastructure upgrades and ensure stronger air connectivity in order to handle more cruise ships and passengers in the future.

Lavrio: A Cruise Gateway to the Aegean Islands

Captain Giorgos Koumpenas, general operations manager at Celestyal Cruises and president of Greece’s Union of Cruise Ship Owners and Maritime Agencies (EEKFN) , said the company had always envisioned the development of the Greek cruise sector and through it the promotion of the country’s destinations.

“For several years, the company had decided that Lavrio under certain conditions could develop into a cruise port, serving as a gateway to the Aegean islands and to Turkey,” he said He also said that a total of 62 will be executed by 2022.

Greece has prioritized the development of cruise travel taking actions that include entering homeporting agreements with global cruise operators, incorporating new destinations into cruise itineraries as well as offering improved services through upgraded infrastructure.

Greece was also among the first countries to re-open to cruise travel during the pandemic contributing to the sector’s recovery.

In this direction, Plakiotakis confirmed that more than 700 cruise ships are expected to sail Greek waters this year, 570 of which will be homeporting out of Greece.

“2022 is expected to be a financially strong year for the cruise industry, which will significantly boost local economies, while contributing to the increase of the tourist flow,” he said.

Lavrion is not ready to handle cruise passengers. We were booked on a cancelled Celestyal cruise, transportation from Athens airport was excessively cost prohibitive and finding a hotel to stay at the night before the cruise was extremely limited. All well and good for cruise docks, but passenger access is not ready.

Stay in Lavrion, Sounio or Athens Greece

At the foot of the Attic peninsula is the port terminal town of Lavrion. This is a quaint ferry and cruise port that is often used as an island hopping port if you fancy visiting other Greek islands. The town of Lavrion is very attractive and popular with visitors from all over the world.

Making reservations of hotels or other accommodation is easy and time saving especially if you find great deals which are always on offer. Staying in hotels close to the passenger terminal means you can island hop when you want to.

Cost-effective properties close to the harbour are the ideal places to stay especially if you wish to see the many smaller Greek islands . Greece is a beautiful country with a fantastic atmosphere, friendly people and beautiful beaches.

However not many accommodations can be found in Lavrion, many guests choose to stay in Sounio or Athens instead.

To keep within your budget it’s advisable to reserve accommodation well in advance or last minute. Prices are clearly shown so you can work out how much you can afford and still have sufficient cash left to have a great holiday.

Cruise and Ferry Port Terminal

Vessels dock within close distance of the town center . From central Athens you can reach the harbour in about 1 hour 15 minutes.

The main cruise line operating from Lavrion is Celestyal Cruises . Ferries leave from the port to several Cyclades islands, including Kea and Kythnos, and the Eastern-Aegean islands of Lemnos and Agios Efstratios. note : some ferry schedules will often indicate Lavrion as Lavrio or Laurio.

The ferry and cruise port terminal has some amazing hotels that overlook the tranquil cove at Lavrion. From the harbour it won’t cost too much to take a ship to Naxos, Mykonos, Milos, Paros or Tinos, just a few of the nearby stunning islands. Take the opportunity to stop off at different islands, stay well within your budget and enjoy a new, friendly culture that only Greece offers.

Town of Lavrion in Greece

Lavrion in Greece is the perfect berthing location for yachts, ferries and cruise vessels with many people visiting to see the interesting rocks, remains of silver mines including rock formations.

With its backdrop of green hills, its unique history, ancient ruins and warm temperatures, it’s a nice place to be.

Check out the Archaeological Museum and the even more interesting Mineralogical Museum that has lots of information regarding the local mining.

There’s also a “Mystery Hole” which is a huge, deep, round pit, with a fascinating history. Some locals believe the hole is the result of a meteor landing on earth.

Hotels are plentiful, have every possible amenity you could wish for, friendly staff and good availability deals.

In Thorikos there’s an ancient theatre too, a must-see when staying in hotels in Lavrion, Greece. One of the many highlights when visiting this part of Greece is the island of Makronissos, once called Helena which served as a prison island.

Why not take a ferry from Lavrion to the strange island of Kea where the locals enjoy going? This island has a few hotels that offer superb accommodation.

Wherever you go in Greece or whichever island you decide to stay on, you won’t be disappointed with Lavrion.
