Interview: '80s Metal Band Cinderella Still Riding the Gypsy Road
Cinderella, the '80s band that broke out of the Philadelphia glam music scene and brought us songs like "Shake Me," "Nobody's Fool" and “Shelter Me,” continue to bring their brand of hard rock, blues and metal to audiences nearly three decades later.
Cinderella, who were discovered by Jon Bon Jovi, are among only a handful of acts from the era who still tour with their classic lineup: Tom Keifer (guitar/vocals), Eric Brittingham (bass), Jeff LaBar (guitar) and Fred Coury (drums).
The band's debut album, Night Songs (Buy it on iTunes ), sold more than 3 million copies and peaked at No. 3 on the US album charts.
I caught up with LaBar as the band were preparing for another long, hot summer tour. I got his thoughts on the current state of hair metal, the band's longevity and his advice for up-and-coming guitarists.
GUITAR WORLD: How's the tour going for you so far?
It's been great! Right now, we're in the midst of an eight-week run of dates that will take us through to the end of August.
Are you finding that, judging from the size of the audiences, there's been a revival of sorts for hair metal?

We've been touring almost every summer for years now and I've been hearing a lot about so-called "revivals." The truth is, I don't think it's ever left. If this is a revival, it's been going on for a quite while. The crowds have been great!
Cinderella still have their original lineup from when you first came on the scene. What's the secret to the band's longevity?
For us, I think it's because we all still like each other. During the tour, we basically live together and enjoy each other's company. We still have fun and ride the same tour bus. I know a few other bands from our genre whose members ride on separate buses. They pretty much stay separate until they actually get on stage, and even then, sometimes they need to be separated. I feel very fortunate to still be able to do this for a living.
What's the story behind how Cinderella was discovered by Jon Bon Jovi?
It happened while Bon Jovi was in Philadelphia recording the 7800° Fahrenheit record. On a night off from recording, Jon went out to watch Cinderella perform at a local club. I wasn't in the band at the time, but I was in a band that opened for them called Precious Metal. Cinderella didn't have a record deal at the time, but Derek Shulman, the man who signed Bon Jovi to Polygram, had the band's demo sitting on his desk.
After seeing the band, Jon was so impressed that he went back to Derek and told him he really needed to check out the band. So Derek came out, saw Cinderella play live and pretty much said the same thing every other record company had said about them: great look, great songs, great energy. They just need to change the drummer and the guitar player.
So, in 1985 Tom (Keifer) and Eric (Brittingham) began holding auditions. I had already known Tom because we both grew up not far from each other. I also remember that two of the other guitarists who auditioned were "Snake" Sabo (Skid Row) and Reggie Wu (Heaven's Edge).
How did you get started playing?
My older brother played guitar while we were growing up. When he wasn't home, I used to dance around with his guitar in front of a mirror to Alice Cooper records [laughs]. One day he caught me and asked if I wanted to really learn how to play. He showed me how to play three chords and then pulled out a song book to show me the diagrams of where to put your fingers. From there, I just started playing by ear. I learned how to play mostly by listening to records and figuring out songs.
So you never did the typical thing like locking yourself in your room?
Nah, I never locked myself in a room or anything like that. I never took a "scholastic" point of view to playing guitar. I took it more as a "This is fun, I just want to play" point of view. Over the years, I'd put bands together, but when everyone's priorities became taking bong hits instead of playing music, I'd leave and move on to a better band. From there, I started writing and getting into doing more originals. It just kept building until I got into Cinderella.
What's your current setup like for this tour?
For this tour, I'm using my 1980 white Custom Shop Les Paul, which has yellowed rather nicely over the years. I've also got a Strat, a Tele, a Dan Armstrong for slide, my Gibson double-neck and, of course, my Kramer. The red one from the "Shake Me" video and the same one my mother lent me the money to buy when I was 20 [laughs].
Do you foresee recording new Cinderella material in the future?
It's something I'd really like to do. The climate of the music business right now is a little odd for those of us who recorded on tape and dealt with a record label, but it’s something we definitely haven't ruled out. We'll see.
What's next for the band once this current tour is over?
Tom's been working on his solo record and Eric and I will continue doing studio work in the Nashville area. I've also been working on a solo project as well.
Do you have any advice for aspiring guitarists?
The big thing is to just make sure to learn the fundamentals. Don't go out there and try to be a burner or play as fast as you can. My son, Sebastian, plays and has taken my advice as he was learning. He's like a carbon copy of me. Now that he's been playing for a while, he recently asked me what the secret was to advancing as a guitarist. I told him the same thing that I mentioned earlier: When everyone around you is just in it for the party, it's time to move on.
Keep up with Cinderella at their Facebook page and official website.

TOM KEIFER: 'I Own The Name, But I Would Never Call My New Band CINDERELLA'
CINDERELLA frontman Tom Keifer was recently featured on the "Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon" podcast. The full interview can be streamed below. A few excerpts follow (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ):
On the recent "deluxe reissue" of his 2013 solo album, "The Way Life Goes" :
Tom : "The original release came out in 2013 and got off to a great start. The record company worked 'Solid Ground' and 'The Flower Song' singles, and then somewhere along the line, there was a... I refer to it as a bit of a corporate shake-up, shall we say. We were faced with losing the masters and the record being pulled from the shelves. I still don't know all the details of what happened there. But before all that happened, we had discussed the idea of doing the deluxe or an expanded edition. Basically, we had to kind of lawyer up and spend a bit of time getting the masters back. When we did, we decided for bonus tracks, rather than a lot of deluxe releases, what happens is they put songs that were left over from the original sessions. We decided to do some new recordings of things that were inspired by the original release and touring, so the first two songs that came to mind were 'With A Little Help From My Friends' , which is the first creative endeavor that my touring band I took on together the first night in rehearsal. We've kind of turned that into an amped-up, hard rock version of the Joe Cocker arrangement and have been playing that on tour ever since in the encore. We've had countless requests for studio versions of that song, as well as the 'Nobody's Fool' duet with Lzzy Hale which came about along 'The Way Life Goes' tour trail where we did some shows together and she and I have sang it many nights on stage.
"Rather than going back to leftovers from the original release, we went in last year after we got the masters back after a little bit of legal work and went into the studio with Vance Powell , who's an amazing producer, [and] with my touring band. It was the first time we recorded the touring band, and the chemistry live translated very well into the studio, and laid down those two tracks, and documented the whole thing on video. You really feel like you're in the studio, watching the band and the producer and Lzzy all work together. We put a lot of time into making it a special, expanded edition, and we're happy to have it back on the shelves after it being really not available for about two years."
On when he plans to start working on a new album:
Tom : "This record took a very long time to make — it took nine-ten years to create this one. When I'm in the studio, I don't really write. Once the record was released and we put this band together and we've been touring, it's kind of like back out into the real world. That starts the process of filling the well — you're back on the road, you're traveling, playing music, meeting people, you're living life — so over the last four years that we've been out touring and building this new band on the road, there's been lots of song ideas building up — those little seeds that come to you as you're riding on the bus, or anywhere. We want to get in the studio... we're kind of targeting the fall of 2018 to go in and start recording a follow-up record, and we're going to record it with the band that I've been touring with, because that worked out very well in the studio when we recorded these bonus tracks. The chemistry that we've had live on the road translated very well into the studio, and that's not always the case. That was very refreshing to walk into the studio and just bang these tracks out in about two days, and everyone contributed creatively and worked very well together. It's a great chemistry that we have."
On CINDERELLA 's legacy:
Tom : "I've always been a believer in quality over quantity. I don't think there's any right or wrong way to create music, or to make a record. I think if you can record a song in 10 minutes for $100 and it's amazing, great, but if it takes two months and $100,000 and it's great, either way, there's no right or wrong. We put a lot of time into the CINDERELLA records. We had the benefit of a major label behind us, who did really not interfere with the creative process. We had free reign to do what we wanted, and I'm very proud of those records. Should've, would've, could've — yeah, it would have been great if we could have made some more records, but it didn't happen that way. I've tried not to have any regrets when I look in the rearview mirror — as a matter of fact, I really try not to ever look in the rearview mirror. I keep my eyes forward, and I'm proud of the records that we made, and I'm proud of 'The Way Life Goes' . That took a long time and was very unconventional, but the creative process, it is what it is. Sometimes life gets in the way too, because there was the whole issue with my vocal paralysis that certainly caused some setbacks for me. That was out of my hands. Life throws things at you that you're not expecting. We certainly weren't expecting to be dropped by Mercury Records after earning them hundreds of millions of dollars. That was a bit of a shocker. I think John Lennon said it best — 'Life's what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.' It is what it is."
On why CINDERELLA hasn't toured without guitarist Jeff LaBar , who has acknowledged battling alcoholism:
Tom : "I don't want to speak on the internal workings of the band and what's going on. I'll leave it at what I've said before — there have been issues within the band that date back decades, and the wheels have come off. That's all I'm going to say about that, because I'm not going to say anything else that goes on between us — but it's been covered by not only me in the press, but other members have done interviews. Speaking on the name issue, I just don't think it's credible many times, at least for me in my heart and the way I feel. I own the name, but I would never call my new band CINDERELLA . It's not CINDERELLA . I'm building something new, and it hasn't been easy. It's like starting over, but I'm riding on a bus with a group of people who are extremely talented, and extremely committed to what we're doing. A lot of people say, 'Why are you still touring?' When the record first came out in 2013, because I chose not to use the name CINDERELLA , I was starting over. We've been building this band on the road from very small clubs to now where we're headlining or direct support on major festivals and fairs, and it's been a punching match. I'm proud of what we've done, and it's been really fun to build this with this band. It's actually more gratifying to have built it as something new. I would never just get a bunch of new people and call it CINDERELLA . That's just not... it's just not me."
On recent his health scare:
Tom : "I started feeling really weird when I was warming up. I collapsed about 15 minutes before the show, got hauled off in an ambulance. By the time I was in the ambulance, I was pretty much numb from my chest down, and felt like there was a boa constrictor wrapped around my chest. I spent the night in the hospital; they ran a lot of tests. Fortunately, my heart checked out fine, and it turned out that it was severe dehydration and heat exhaustion. I've had heat exhaustion and dehydration before—– never this severe... I've never had that sensation all the way up to my neck. It was scary."
"The Way Life Goes - Deluxe Edition" was made available on October 20 via Cleopatra Records .

If you are looking for a great eighties metal hair band live show then Cinderella is sure to deliver the goods. The original band members are still in the band all these years later and that is a monumental task for any band to remain together since the early eighties.
Often Cinderella tours with other eighties bands such as Poison and Skid Row. I recently saw Cinderella on the Monsters of Rock Cruise in 2013 and they absolutely rocked that boat and put on an amazing show. They may not have as much hair as they did in the eighties but thier musicianship is superb and they played all their hits note perfect. It was so great to hear songs like "Save Me", "Gypsy Road", "Nobody's Fool" and "You Don't Know What You Got" played live again. They also play new songs because they are still writing great music and not relying on the old stuff just to make a few bucks.
Cinderella plays live today just as well and just as hard as they did back in the eighties and the nineties and their sound live is absolutely amazing. Couple the great live sound with an awesome light show and some special effects and you will have a great concert experience and this is a band that never fails to deliver.

Last month, Tom released the official music video for the song “A Different Light” . The track is taken from Tom ‘s critically acclaimed solo debut album, “The Way Life Goes” , which is celebrating its tenth anniversary.
Keifer ‘s story begins as the singer-songwriter, guitarist and frontman of hard rock heavyweights CINDERELLA . His signature voice, guitar and bluesy, no-B.S. arena-shaking songwriting, played an integral role in moving records to the tune of 15 million worldwide. Tom Keifer is enjoying continued success recording and touring with #keiferband — Tom Keifer , Savannah Keifer , Tony Higbee , Billy Mercer , Kendra Chantelle , Jarred Pope and Kory Myers — releasing two critically acclaimed solo albums, the aforementioned “The Way Life Goes” and “Rise” .
“When this band came together, we all felt a bit like broken souls, each with our own unique story,” Tom explains. “If you ask anyone in the band, they would all say this band came along at just the right time. Every human who walks this planet faces challenges and extreme adversity they have to overcome. As a band, we feel fortunate to be able to face those things together. There is a piece of every band member in the ‘The Death Of Me’ as well as throughout the entire ‘Rise’ album.”
The common thread to each song on “Rise” is the intuitive interplay between each member of #keiferband , a tight but loose collective that’s spent the last six-plus years on the road honing their live craft together in support of Keifer ‘s critically acclaimed 2013 solo debut, “The Way Life Goes” . “Rise” is the studio-bred equivalent of a band just now realizing the full scope of its powers.
“We were trying to capture the feeling of what people have witnessed live with this band,” Keifer explains. “ There’s an off-the-rails, real live feel to ‘Rise’ — and that’s what we were going for. It shows a real kind of angst and reckless abandon that we tried not to polish too much. And when we pull it back on the ballads, it’s more about the emotion, the soul, and making people feel something in a different way.”
“To me, the perfect rock and roll record is perfectly f**ked up,” Keifer says with a hearty laugh. “You try to make each record interesting and different. I don’t ever want to make the same record twice, even though there’s a common thread between them. Everything doesn’t have to be perfectly in place, but there is a balance you try to strike. Sometimes there may be something about it that’s technically not ‘right,’ but there’s a vibe, an energy and an attitude to it that I always try to preserve.”
Tom was scheduled to join forces with RATT , SKID ROW and SLAUGHTER for “The Big Rock Summer Tour” this past summer, but the trek was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Live / Loud Tour
Tom Keifer remains a resilient, relevant figure in the rock world through constant reimagination and renewal. His story begins as the singer-songwriter, guitarist and front man of hard rock heavyweights Cinderella. His signature voice and guitar, and bluesy, no-BS arena-shaking songwriting, were integral in moving 15 million records worldwide. Over the past decade, Keifer transitioned his talents to a solo career, enjoying continued success recording and touring with #keiferband. #keiferband is Tom Keifer, Savannah Keifer, Tony Higbee, Billy Mercer, Jarred Pope, Kory Myers, Tanya Davis. Two critically-acclaimed albums have been released to date: THE WAY LIFE GOES (2013) and RISE (2019). 2023 will mark #keiferband’s ten year anniversary. The band will be celebrating the milestone this year on their “LIVE LOUD TOUR” with plenty of high energy, eardrum-shattering shows combining all the classic, chart topping hits of Cinderella with new faves from #keiferband releases.
Winger - Kip Winger and the boys are back! The band’s top singles including “Seventeen”, “Headed For A Heartbreak” and “Miles Away” are just three of the Metal rock tunes that make it a night when everybody stands the entire show!
John Corabi had already been cutting his teeth in the hard rock world for nearly a decade when he landed the high-profile gig of replacing Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil in 1992. Although his tenure with the group proved to be a brief one, Corabi earned a reputation as a go-to frontman and collaborator, amassing a solid résumé as a singer and guitarist with acts like The Eric Singer Project (ESP), Union, and The Dead Daisies.

Naberezhnye Chelny
Places to see and visit.
The city of Naberezhnye Chelny is situated in the northeast of the republic and has a harbour on the left bank of the Kama river. Chelny (a short name of the city) is located 225 km to the east from Kazan , and 17 km to the north-east from the railway station Krugloe Pole. The first settlements on the territory of Naberezhnye Chelny were known since 1626.
The city is the administrative centre of the Tukaevsky district . The main industrial enterprises are the Kama Association for the Production of Heavy-Duty Vehicles (KamAZ) and the Nizhnekamskaya Hydroelectric Power Station.
Unveiling the Rich History
Naberezhnye Chelny stands as the second-largest city in Tatarstan. Scholars speculate that the roots of this city trace back to the 11th century. With a Bulgarian settlement called Yar Chally. The city’s official mention in Russian chronicles in 1626 marks a pivotal moment in its history, marking the inception of a settlement that would evolve into the industrial hub we know today.
Industrial Boom in the Mid-20th Century
While relatively unknown in the early 20th century, Naberezhnye Chelny underwent a transformative journey from a provincial town to a major industrial center from the late 1950s onward. The establishment of the Kama Automobile Plant in the 1960s played a significant role in propelling the city’s development.
Architectural Marvels of the 20th Century
Naberezhnye Chelny’s character took shape in the latter half of the 20th century. It boasted intriguing examples of architecture and sculpture from that era. Walking through the city’s streets, once the widest in the Soviet Union, reveals a well-maintained environment adorned with flower beds and vibrant floral compositions. August brings an explosion of colors during events celebrating the Republic of Tatarstan, turning the city into a fairyland of floral figures and structures.
Cultural Exploration in Museums and Theatres
Discover the city’s history in detail at the Museum of the City! It showcases the stages of Naberezhnye Chelny’s development and highlighting the grand socialist-era project – the construction of the KAMAZ automotive giant. Spend a few hours in the Naberezhnochelny Picture Gallery. There you may enjoy works by local artists, and immerse yourself in the majestic music of Bach in the Organ Hall. Catch performances at Tatar and Russian drama theatres for a taste of the city’s cultural richness.
Harmony of East and West
Reflecting Tatarstan’s cultural fusion, Naberezhnye Chelny features both Orthodox churches – Church of Cosmas and Damian, St. Tikhon’s Church, St. Seraphim Sarovsky Church, and modern mosques – Abuzar, Ak Mechet, Bilal, Jamig, Ramazan, Tufan Mahalla. Notably, the Tauba Mosque, built in the early 1990s, remains a masterpiece of contemporary Russian Muslim architecture.
Nature’s Bounty in Summer
During the summer, Naberezhnye Chelny and its surroundings come alive with greenery. Explore the “Lower Kama” nature reserve, covering over many thousands hectares of forests, meadows, and water bodies at the confluence of the forest and steppe zones. The reserve offers captivating land and water routes along the Nizhnekamsk reservoir, Kama, and Kriusha rivers.
Warm Hospitality of Naberezhnye Chelny
Chelny welcomes guests with open arms. Enjoy attentive service in cafes and shops, savor delicious cuisine in restaurants, and experience the city’s clean and well-maintained appearance, complemented by the friendly smiles of the locals, leaving you with a pleasant impression.
