Clerks III is here nearly 30 years after the first movie was released. Kevin Smith has come a long way since he filmed Clerks at the actual convenience store where he worked. Now, the cult filmmaker has his own production company and a hallowed position among Hollywood creatives. Clerks III promises to remind its fans of everything they love about the View Askewniverse, as Smith brings reunites every old friend it took to make his breakout masterpiece, and also Ben Affleck .

The trailer shows us everything we ever loved about Clerks and takes us a little deeper with a literal wink to those true Kevin Smith fans. It’s a movie made for all of us that weren’t even supposed to be here today. It has roof hockey, Mooby the golden calf, and some classic '90s jams. Kevin Smith seems just as excited as we are for the release, as he’s taking his film on tour. Clerks III comes out in September, and don’t worry about the movie theaters; we assure you, they’re open.

Clerks III: The Plot

Clerks was a movie shot to reflect a day in the life of Kevin Smith as he saw it, working at a convenience store. Clerks II felt more metaphorical as Dante and Randal became masters of their own destiny when they bought the Quick Stop to run it themselves. And if Clerks is informed by the life of Kevin Smith, then Clerks III will tell the story of Clerks and how Smith started making movies. While some fans think this is breaking franchise tradition , it may be closer to Smith's voice than we realize.

Related: Kevin Smith's Movie Theater Receives 'Bomb' Threats

For the Clerks III trailer, we see Randal have a heart attack like Smith did a few years ago. When Randal wakes up, he looks at his life and decides it isn’t much of a life at all. He sees how he just keeps watching the same old movies and is instantly inspired to make a movie instead. So what movie does he make? Clerks ! He starts filming at the Quick Stop, much like Smith did, writing and filming events from his own life. There’s even a shot in black and white where a stranger points a gun at the camera, and before we hear a gunshot, Dante comes in from the background and says, “I’m not letting you kill me off in the third act! What if there’s a sequel?” Randal replies, “A sequel? What am I, a hack?” And Silent Bob points right at the camera and gives us a wink.

For those who don’t know, Clerks was originally meant to end with Dante being killed. He would have gotten shot, and the credits would have rolled with no music on the tragic death of the clerk that wasn’t even supposed to be there that day. But thankfully for us, Clerks didn’t end so darkly, and there was a sequel and a whole universe of fun Kevin Smith projects!

Clerks III: The Cast

The movie has everybody! Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson return to the Quick Stop as Dante and Randal, respectively. And you literally couldn’t make a Clerks movie without Jay and Silent Bob. Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith will reprise their roles as everyone’s favorite stoners and smoke joints the size of a digeridoo.

A lot of the old recurring characters will be back as well. Trevor Fehrman will return as the other clerk Elias Grover. Marilyn Ghigliotti is back as Veronica. Jen Schwalbach is still Dante’s ex-fiancé Emma Bunting. And Rosario Dawson is the former Mooby’s manager and Dante’s current fiancé Becky Scott.

Clerks III has loads of special guest stars in true Kevin Smith fashion. Of course, Ben Affleck will be there, but the film will also feature Justin Long, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Fred Armisen, and Amy Sedaris. All four stars from Kevin Smith’s Comic Book Men will be there: Walt Flanagan, Bryan Johnson, Mike Zapcic, and Ming Chen. Fans think there could even be more surprises waiting for the premiere.

Release Date

Clerks III has a release date set for September 13, 2022, and Kevin Smith will be taking his show on the road with a tour across North America. The movie will have a limited theatrical release working with Fathom Events. They’ll be putting the film into selected theaters from Tuesday, September 13th to Sunday, September 18th, so make sure to get your tickets now. The screenings will include special behind-the-scenes footage.

As for the tour, Smith revealed just before San Diego Comic-Com that the Clerks III: The Convenience Tour would start in Red Bank, New Jersey, on September 4th. After that, they’re going everywhere from Vancouver to San Francisco. Some early shows are already sold out, but more shows in more towns are being added. Kevin Smith will have a Q&A at each location with some VIP tickets, including a signed screenplay and a picture with the filmmaker. The theatrical release and the tour for Clerks III keep getting additional dates, so this premiere might get pretty big in the coming days.

Clerks 3: Release Date, Cast And More

Jeff Anderson and Brian O'Halloran as Randal and Dante in Clerks III

(Welcome to ...And More , our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)

Nearly 30 years after its cinematic debut, I assure you, the Quick Stop is open once again thanks to "Clerks III." After trying to manifest this project in a number of different ways since the release of the second film in 2006, fan-favorite filmmaker Kevin Smith is finally presenting the third chapter in Dante Hicks and Randal Graves' story in a theater near you. And interestingly enough, this movie brings the New Jersey native all the way back to his first chapter as the characters that kickstarted his career back in the early '90s are now making their own movie about working in a convenience store.

To avoid the real tragedy of showing up at the theater when you're not even supposed to be there today, we've complied all the information you need to know about when and where to catch "Clerks III" on the big screen. Plus, some information that you probably didn't think you'd need. Seeing as you're a master of your own destiny, feel free to read on or not.

Clerks 3 release date and where you can watch it

Dante Hicks puts up a flyer for auditions at the Quick Stop in Clerks III

Just like he's done with a number of his films, Smith is taking "Clerks III" on the road. When the first trailer dropped ahead of San Diego Comic-Con 2022, the filmmaker revealed that "Clerks III: The Convenience Tour" would kick off in Red Bank, New Jersey on September 4, 2022 before visiting cities around North America like Philadelphia, New York City, Denver, Seattle, Vancouver, and more. A general admission ticket to this show includes one of the filmmaker's signature Q&A sessions (potentially with some special guests), but the VIP option offers a signed screenplay and a picture with Silent Bob himself. Tickets are available at the official "Clerks III" site , but if you don't see your town listed, keep checking back as more dates are being added.

Alternatively, if you're looking for a more conventional viewing experience, Smith has teamed up with Fathom Events for a limited theatrical run in cinemas across the country. Originally set for two days, Lionsgate and Fathom have expanded the engagement to six days from Tuesday, September 13, 2022 to Sunday, September 18, 2022. These screenings, which will be offered in more than 700 theaters nationwide, begin at 7:00pm local time and include exclusive behind the scenes footage. Tickets can be purchased through Fathom Events' website or your local theater's box office.

The cast of Clerks 3

Jay, Silent Bob, and a massive blunt in Clerks III

Just as the filmmaker has said many times for over a decade, Kevin Smith can't tell a "Clerks" story without four core characters. Luckily, all four are coming back for "Clerks III" as it will star Brian O'Halloran as Dante Hicks, Jeff Anderson as Randal Graves, Jason Mewes as Jay, and Kevin Smith as Silent Bob. They'll be joined by other returning cast members, including Marilyn Ghigliotti as Veronica Loughran from the original "Clerks," Jen Schwalbach as Dante's ex-fiance Emma Bunting, Rosario Dawson as former Mooby's manager/Dante's current finance Becky Scott, and Trevor Fehrman as fellow clerk Elias Grover.

The highly anticipated three-quel will also feature "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" and "Fist Fight" star Austin Zajur and all four stars of the AMC reality show "Comic Book Men" (Walt Flanagan, Bryan Johnson, Mike Zapcic, and Ming Chen), as well as cameos from Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ben Affleck, Amy Sedaris, Justin Long, and Fred Armisen. Knowing Smith's penchant for bringing back characters from his View Askewniverse, this is probably only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the cast of "Clerks III."

Clerks 3 writer, director, and more

Kevin Smith addresses his crew in a behind the scenes shot from Clerks III

Just like the first two "Clerks" movies and the other films in the series that was once known as the New Jersey Trilogy (which now includes eight live-action movies, one animated movie, and an animated series), "Clerks III" is written, directed, and produced by Kevin Smith. He also stars as Silent Bob, one half of the iconic slacker duo that has become embedded in pop culture thanks to movies like "Mallrats," "Dogma," and "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot."

On the producing front, Smith is joined by Liz Destro of Destro Films, who first teamed with him on "Yoga Hosers," and SmodCo's Jordan Monsanto, who is a long-time producing partner of Smith's and the life partner of Jason Mewes. However, an interesting name missing from the producers list is Scott Mosier. The SModcast co-host and View Askew OG produced "Clerks" (in addition to playing multiple roles), "Clerks II," and many of Smith's other projects until 2008's "Zack and Miri Make a Porno."

Since then, Mosier has had an eclectic career in Hollywood that includes writing for "Ultimate Spider-Man" on Disney XD, co-directing  "The Grinch" starring Benedict Cumberbatch, and providing additional voices for Illumination Entertainment's sequels for "Sing" and "The Secret Life of Pets." There's no evidence of a falling out between the two, who initially met in film school, so it's likely just a case of their careers taking different paths these days.

Clerks 3 trailer and synopsis

Finally, here's the official trailer for "Clerks III," along with the film's official synopsis:

Following a massive heart attack, Randal enlists his friends and fellow clerks Dante, Elias, Jay, and Silent Bob to make a movie immortalizing his life at the convenience store that started it all.

A massive heart attack has Randal deciding to make a movie about his life working at the Quick Stop convenience store, as fans got a sneak peek when the official trailer for Kevin Smith ‘s Clerks 3 dropped Wednesday.

As Lionsgate and Fathom Events get set to bring the sequel to theaters for two nights only, on Sept. 13 and 15, the trailer sees Randal, played by Jeff Anderson, tap fellow clerks Dante, Elias, Jay and Silent Bob, played by Smith, to make a movie immortalizing his life at the convenience store that started it all.

In February 2018, Smith tweeted a selfie from a hospital bed after telling his fans t hat he had survived a “massive” heart attack. The Clerks director added: “If I hadn’t canceled show 2 to go to the hospital, I would’ve died tonight. But for now, I’m still above ground!”

So it’s no surprise Randal in Clerks 3 also has a near-fatal heart attack, which inspired the sequel script Smith wrote and directed. “Everything in this script is something either me or someone I know said,” Randal says at one point, just before Fred Armisen , Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ben Affleck make brief cameos in the trailer.

Fathom Events and Lionsgate will present Clerks III in more than 700 U.S. movie theaters in September, with both nights to feature an exclusive look behind the scenes with director Smith and the cast of the film.

Clerks III will also star Brian O’Halloran as Dante, Trevor Fehrman as Elias, and Jason Mewes as Jay. Smith’s breakout film, Clerks, was released in 1994. The sequel, Clerks 2 , arrived in theaters in 2006 and grossed $24 million in the U.S.

Finding the financing for Clerks 3 took years, and for the first time the latest sequel was shot entirely on location in New Jersey.

“ Clerks III is the definition of event cinema, especially if you are a Kevin Smith fan or a maven of independent cinema. This film rounds out the story that started a revolution in filmmaking. And to bring it to the fans on the big screen, there is no greater partner in the world of event cinema than Fathom Events,” Eda Kowan, Lionsgate’s executive vp acquisitions and co-productions, said in a statement.

Clerks III has Liz Destro and Smodco’s Jordan Monsanto producing.

Clerks 3 Release Date, Cast, Plot, And Trailer - What We Know So Far

Dante Hicks talking

Quick Stop may be closed, but "Clerks" itself is still open for business. Back in 1994, the buddy-comedy movie focusing on two best friends navigating the mundane thrills of working retail won the hearts of many and was quickly catapulted into cult classic status. Now, roughly 16 years since "Clerks II" and nearly 30 years since the original movie's release, the third installment of "Clerks" is finally on the way.

The return of "Clerks" is sure to attract fans of the first two movies, as well as younger generations who may be curious about the series. These prospective viewers may be eager to learn more about what the movie is going to be like, who among the old cast is returning for the sequel, which fresh faces will be joining the franchise, and, of course, when the movie will finally be available for the masses to enjoy. Fortunately, there's a good answer to all these questions and more, courtesy of a variety of sources.

What is the release date of Clerks 3?

Dante Hicks and Randal Graves talking

Avid movie viewers and "Clerks" fans alike will be happy to hear that they will not have to wait much longer for "Clerks III," as the release of the film is imminent. However, those wanting to see the movie in theaters will have to plan accordingly, as its rollout is set to be rather unorthodox.

According to The Hollywood Reporter , Lionsgate and Fathom Events will only be premiering "Clerks III" in general theaters for a mere two dates: Sept. 13 and 15. However, if fans miss these initial screenings, all hope is not lost. According to Collider , subsequent dates for theatrical screenings of the movie are set to be announced at 2022 Comic-Con International: San Diego later this July.

Apart from these plans, "Clerks III" will also have a special "Convenience Tour" of theatrical screenings alongside a live Q&A session with Smith. The tour will begin with the movie's special world premiere in Red Bank, New Jersey on Sept. 4 and will continue into the early days of October across several major cities including New York and Los Angeles.

"'Clerks III' is the definition of event cinema, especially if you are a Kevin Smith fan or a maven of independent cinema," Eda Kowan, Vice President of Lionsgate said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter ).

Who is in the cast of Clerks 3?

Ben Affleck auditioning

The first two "Clerks" movies spawned a slew of extremely memorable characters, some of which even transcended the franchise into pop culture iconography. Fortunately, the upcoming third installment is set to bring back much of the core cast from the previous two entries.

Brian O'Holloran and Jeff Anderson will once again headline as the loveable retail-working duo Dante Hicks and Randal Graves. Marilyn Ghigliotti will reprise her role from the first "Clerks" as Dante's ex-girlfriend Veronica Loughran, while Rosario Dawson returns as restaurant manager Becky Scott from "Clerks II" alongside Trevor Fehrman as the religiously conflicted employee Elias Grover. Surely to the delight of many fans as well, Jason Mewes and Smith will appear as the iconic delinquent duo Jay and Silent Bob  (via Deadline ).

The movie is also set to feature some pretty major celebrity cameos . Ben Affleck, Fred Armisen, and Sarah Michelle Gellar all appear in the film as characters (or potentially just themselves) auditioning for a movie, and it's not too hard to imagine that a few more surprises might be stuffed in the cast list beyond who has already been confirmed.

What is the plot of Clerks 3?

Randal Graves in hospital bed

The initial plot details for "Clerks III" indicate that it's set to be Smith's most meta-infused project yet. Catching up with the Quick Stop team years down the line, the movie sees Randal suffer a heart attack while on the job. The health scare prompts the veteran employee to face his own mortality and, when he realizes he hasn't done anything extraordinary with his life, he becomes inspired to make an autobiographical movie focusing on his and Dante's misadventures at Quick Stop. Indeed, "Clerks III" will entail the main characters essentially making an in-universe version of the original "Clerks."

Aside from the project's obvious focus on lampooning the production process of the original film, another major element of the movie also draws from its creator's past. Smith suffered a heart attack in early 2018, and the experience prompted him to write a new script for "Clerks III" that would center upon the characters dealing with getting older and the problems that come with it. Yes, Smith's health issues inspired him to make a movie about a character's health issues inspiring them to make a movie. There are layers here.

"You can't slack after a heart attack. It's that simple," Smith said in an interview with Vanity Fair . "That being the motivating factor in our story just gives us a way to leap off into the theme of: There is less time ahead of us than there is behind us at this point."

Is there a trailer for Clerks 3?

Fans eager to see an early glimpse of what "Clerks III" has in store are now able to do so with the release of the movie's first official trailer . Smith himself premiered the trailer on his own official YouTube account on July 6, treating fans to their first look at a couple scenes from the movie.

At just under two minutes long and set to the fittingly grunge-tinged rock melody of "My Own Worst Enemy" by Lit, the trailer provides a good look at the story and tone of the film. It mostly focuses on events that likely take place early on in the movie, such as Dante's heart attack and subsequent inspiration to create a movie based on his own life. But while the trailer doesn't reveal every possible detail about the movie, it definitely nails the trademark "Clerks" tone, with its emphasis on jabs at popular culture (including a few playful prods at Disney and their management of "Star Wars" ), frequent instances of self-referential humor, and embrace of stoner culture.

Even more details on "Clerks III" are sure to come out in the coming months, but for now, audiences can look forward to the film's release in September.

It has been officially announced that Fathom Events and Lionsgate are expanding the theatrical release of Kevin Smith 's hotly-anticipated sequel, Clerks III . Fathom and Lionsgate previously announced that they would be releasing the film in select theaters nationwide on September 13 and 15, and now, Smith has declared on Twitter that four more dates have been added to the film's theatrical release. Clerks III will now be playing in theaters on September 14, 16, 17, and 18, meaning that the film will play theatrically for almost a full week, something that doesn't occur often with Fathom releases.

Regarding the expansion, Smith has said "I assure you, we’re open! Many thanks to Lionsgate and Fathom for expanding our limited run of Clerks III to include a weekend. And even bigger thanks to the fans who already bought tickets to our Fathom screenings! All your pre-sales made this expansion happen!” The original first two dates, which were weekdays, were fully sold out, prompting Lionsgate and Fathom Events to add the additional dates. All the screenings will begin at 7:00 PM local time and will feature an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette with the cast and crew.

Clerks III will feature most of the same characters from the first two Clerks movies and will follow fan-favorite character Randal ( Jeff Anderson ) as he faces an existential crisis after suffering a major heart attack and fearing he has nothing to show for his life. Soon, Randal decides to enlist his beloved pals to help him film a movie celebrating his life as a clerk at Quick Stop, the convenience store featured in the Clerks franchise since the original 1994 flick that started it all. In addition to Anderson, Brian O’Halloran, Trevor Fehrman, Jason Mewes, Rosario Dawson, Marilyn Ghigliotti , and Smith himself will all be reprising their roles from the previous Clerks movies . Clerks III is written and directed by Smith, and produced by Smith, Liz Destro , and Jordan Monsanto . Ben Affleck, Fred Armisen, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Amy Sedaris , and Justin Long round out the rest of the cast.

Kevin Smith's mainstream popularity may have already peaked, but his fans remain faithful after all these years. Through his View Askew Universe, Smith has created a multiverse of characters that span into his recent works including 2019's Jay and Silent Bob Reboot , which was also released through Fathom and raked in 2019's second highest per-screen average with its traveling roadshow release strategy. Clerks III is gearing up to be even more successful than that film, currently scheduled to play in more than 700 theaters across the nation.

Clerks III will play in select theaters from September 13 to 18 and you can get your tickets now at FathomEvents . Check out the official trailer for Clerks III below:

About Kevin Smith:

Kevin Patrick Smith is an American filmmaker, actor, comedian, comic book writer, author, YouTuber, and podcaster. He came to prominence with the low-budget comedy buddy film Clerks (1994), which he wrote, directed, co-produced, and acted in as the character Silent Bob of stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob. Clerks won the "Award of the Youth" and the "MercedesBenz Award" at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, the "Filmmakers Trophy" at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards (Best First Feature, Best First Screenplay and Jeff Anderson for Best Debut Performance).

The film Jay and Silent Bob also appeared in Smith's later films Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which are set primarily in his home state of New Jersey. While not strictly sequential, the films have crossover plot elements, character references, and a shared canon known as the "View Askewniverse", named after Smith's production company View Askew Productions, which he co-founded with Scott Mosier.

Since 2011, Smith has mostly made horror films, including Red State (2011) and the "comedy horror films" Tusk (2014) and Yoga Hosers (2016), two in a planned series of three such films set in Canada dubbed the True North trilogy.

Last year, Smith executive produced Masters of the Universe: Revelation for Netflix and coming later this year, Smith will release the much anticipated Clerks III via Lionsgate.

Smith owns Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash in Red Bank, New Jersey, a comic bookstore which became the setting for the reality television show Comic Book Men (2012-2018). As a podcaster, Smith co-hosts several shows on his SModcast Podcast Network, including SModcast, Fatman Beyond, and the live show Hollywood Babble-On. He is known for participating in long, humorous Q&A sessions that are often filmed for DVD release, beginning with An Evening with Kevin Smith .
