Went to see Lloyd at the Coventry Cathedral. What a beautiful venue, pity about the concert. Most of his 'fans' remember him for his upbeat hits from the eighties yet what I saw and heard was very boring almost to the point of wanting to fall asleep. His encore was 2 slow tunes I'd never heard of. Also when playing in a cathedral he could at least show a little respect and not make digs about it. Totally unnecessary.

What a great show indeed. Lloyd Cole is almost at his best. The concert took place in a parisian church and as it was an acoustic show everything was perfect to enjoy the music and the lyrics

Lloyd did speak frequently with the french audience and it was a night to remember. All the "hits" from Rattlesnakes were played.

Was really looking forward to this show and left disappointed. He was good. But basically stood on stage and played. Told a few jokes mostly about getting old - strange as he was probably the youngest in the room.

The advertising seemed to imply he would be joined by 2 of the Commotions, but only one joined him after intermission. The second half was better with 2 guitarists.

The other issue was the lighing, the blue backlight with a dim spotlight meant he was hard to see from the stalls. Basically he would have been better in a smaller more intimate venue.

It was good to see one of my younger music stars but I wouldn't bother seeing him again, nor would the others who attended with me.

Preview: Lloyd Cole goes From Rattlesnakes to Guesswork on newly announced tour

lloyd cole uk tour 2022

Featured image: Jayjay Robertson

With almost 40 years worth of songs in his bag, Lloyd Cole is heading on tour, with a UK leg that includes a visit to Manchester’s Albert Hall on Tuesday 19th April.

From Rattlesnakes to Guesswork was meant to start its tour two years ago but was sadly rescheduled twice, due to COVID-19 lockdowns.

Lloyd Cole and the Commotions were a firm fixture in the 1980s pop charts with songs that combined catchy tunes with erudite lyrics. ‘Lost Weekend’ was an infectious number about double pneumonia in a single room in Amsterdam. ‘Jennifer She Said’ was a bitter-sweet tale of a man whose lost love is tattooed in blue on his skin. ‘Brand New Friend’ featured a happily-sad narrator: “Walking through the pouring rain, walking with Jesus and Jane.”

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon referenced Lloyd Cole and the Commotions’ second album Easy Pieces (1985) in a sequence of musically inspired verses within his 1998 collection Hay : “The in-crowd/on the outs with the likes of Milton/ and Spenser while Cromwell/ still walked through the pouring rain.”

The tour’s Scottish date will be something of a homecoming for the singer. It was at Glasgow University in the early 1980s that Cole met Blair Cowan and Neil Clark and the wheels of the Commotions started to spin. They were then joined by Lawrence Donegan (bass guitar) and Stephen Irvine (drums).

Their debut album Rattlesnakes was released in 1984. Cole’s lyrics were decorated with allusions to American cultural icons – Leonard Cohen, Truman Capote, Arthur Lee, Norman Mailer, Eve Marie Saint and many more.

Fleeting infatuations and romances were significant features of the songs. In ‘Charlotte Street’ the narrator is “looking for a rhyme for the New York Times” when a girl interrupts to ask if he knows “how to spell audaciously.”

1967 Eurovision winner Sandie Shaw covered Rattlesnakes ’ closing track, ‘Are You Ready to be Heartbroken?’ She had already enjoyed a 1984 hit, at the side of Johnny Marr, with her version of The Smith’s ‘Hand in Glove’.

In 2013, Lloyd Cole released Standards . It included ‘Women’s Studies’ – about an eternal student preoccupied with Franz Kafka and thoughts about the women he didn’t marry. It was one of the numbers Cole performed on BBC2’s Later… in 2013. Lloyd told host Jools Holland of how Bob Dylan had inspired him to throw off self-consciousness about ageing and loosen up his sound.

His most recent album, Guesswork , released in 2019, could almost have been recorded with a premonition of the pandemic year of 2020. It used more of the synth-pop of Cole’s 1980s contemporaries than the guitar and strings soundscape of Rattlesnakes . Songs like ‘The Afterlife’ and ‘When I came down from the Mountain’ placed their narrators in a half-life removed from the collisions of city life. Read the aAh! review of Guesswork in further detail here .

After gigs in Portugal and France, the UK leg of From Rattlesnakes to Guesswork tour will start in Manchester and end in Brighton, on 11th May.

Will Shaun Ryder be in the audience? In his autobiography, How to Be a Rockstar , the Happy Mondays singer tells how The Madchester band played The Gallery (corner of Peter Street and Deansgate, near the Albert Hall) because “Lloyd Cole and the Commotions were supposed to be playing that night, but they’d just had a hit, so cancelled.”

If you ever hear Shaun Ryder covering ‘Lost Weekend’, that might be the reason behind it.

Tickets for Lloyd Cole’s From Rattlesnake to Guesswork tour can be bought here.

CONCERT REVIEW : Lloyd Cole Royal Concert Hall Glasgow 25th April 2022

lloyd cole uk tour 2022

Lloyd Cole Royal Concert Hall Glasgow 25 th April 2022

After the show being postponed due to the covid pandemic it is finally happening in the magnificent venue in the heart of Glasgow City centre. As the fan gathered the venue there is huge excitement about the show. Tonight’s show is split into two sets.

As the lights dim down the outline of Lloyd Cole take to the stage, which is made up with three acoustic guitars and two round tables and a music stand.as the tall figure enters the spotlight he is greeted with a warm welcome from the Glasgow audience. A warm glow spotlight Beans down on Lloyd as he performs songs from Rattlesnakes to Guesswork. Lloyd commanded the stage as he took in all sides of the venue. The set opens with the excellent Past Imperfect that delights the Glasgow audience. To nights show was about entertainment as a lot of the crowd in the audience may not have seen a show in the last two years due to the pandemic. Tonight, was a celebration not of the music of Lloyd Cole but about people out enjoying themselves.

Lloyd Cole - Royal Concert Hall Glasgow 25th April 2022

Lloyd did not disappoint as he dug deep into his catalogue including Kids Today Rattlesnakes and the excellent My Bag. Tonight, was an acoustic set with Lloyd playing song they way there were created, bringing out a personal feel to the show with a few stories about the songs he really captured the audience with the performance and playing some obscure tracks. The excellent Patience, Late Night, Early Town before Are you Ready to be Heartbroken?

Neil Clark joins Lloyd Cole on stage and performs 2CV the show was gaining pace as they both entertained the Glasgow audience with the excellent Lost Weekend and then a crowd pleaser in Perfect Skin before the encore.

As he appeared back on stage taking in a round of applause, he delighted the Glasgow audience with No Blue skies. The show closed with the excellent Forest Fire but the broken-down version took a whole new different feel, delivering a more mellow feel. This was a special night for both fans and Lloyd a chance to put the past two years to bed and bring it a bright new future to blossom in. If you get a chance on this tour pop along and see the wonderful music of Lloyd Cole.

lloyd cole uk tour 2022

Lloyd Cole  brings his latest tour  From Rattlesnakes to Guesswork to Lincoln.

In 1990 Lloyd launched a solo career and has been making albums ever since. In the early 2000s Cole retreated somewhat from rock/pop, performing mostly acoustically, but his 2013 album  Standards  took fans, critics, and maybe even the artist himself, aback with its brash electric rock ‘n’ roll sound.

This show will present music from Lloyd’s back catalogue, starting with Rattlesnakes  in 1984, right up to his latest album  Guesswork .

His latest album,  Guesswork , mirrors the uncertainty of the world as you enter your third act and is consistent with a record whose protagonists seem reluctant to venture confidently beyond the moment.

Following the release of his twelfth studio album, the phenomenal Lloyd Cole heads out on tour.

On Pain  is Lloyd’s twelfth album as a solo artist and features eight new songs, four of which are co-written by Commotions founding members Blair Cowan and Neil Clark, who also perform on the record.

In addition to releasing his new album, Lloyd Cole has also announced a UK/Ireland tour in the autumn, with Blair Cowan and Neil Clarke appearing alongside him.

'I’m excited to still be finding new methods, new perspectives, new sounds. The album may be nearing commercial death, but my career has been in that state for almost 30 years and here we are, still, and I still want to make albums. I still want to be heard. I’m very much looking forward to being on stage with Neil, and Blair in October. We have no intention of producing a retro show.' — Lloyd Cole
