EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Heather Langenkamp On The Trek-Elm Street Connection

moto star trek

It’s got to surprise people to learn that Heather Langenkamp from Elm Street is involved in Star Trek …

LANGENKAMP: A lot of people don’t know. I actually have to tell them I’m in the movie because nobody in the world is going to know that on their own, unless they like to read the credits. But I wanted to be in Star Trek really desperately because, after having experienced all the Elm Street fan love, having been a part of the conventions and having been a part of such an iconic franchise, I knew it was something similar with Star Trek . Star Trek has such a great legacy and it means so much to so many people. So, when my husband got the job, when our studio got the job to do the makeups, I begged my husband, like, “Please, can we make one that I can wear?” I tried to be cool about it, but I probably wasn’t very cool. But I was persuasive enough and he caved.

Tell us about the makeup on Moto…

LANGENKAMP: The makeup that I wear is actually a very special design that we’d developed in our studio. There was no movie that it was for, originally. A sculptor had come up with these designs. It was kind of a spec project and it ended up sitting on the shelf for many years. The sculptor actually passed away from a tragic bout with cancer. So we were even more determined to get this makeup on screen and we said, “If it ever gets on screen we’ll call the character Moto,” because that was the name of the sculptor. His name was Moto.

moto star trek

And what was J.J. Abrams’ reaction when David brought it up to him?

LANGENKAMP: J.J. was really open-minded when David told him the scenario and the story, and he loved the design. So we found a place in the film where this character could fit, where it could logically be, which is in the brig. I imagined that Moto is a climate-control officer, keeping the humidity at a proper level. I sat at a desk and had all these dials to play with. It was a beautiful set, of course. It’s every Star Trek fan’s dream to be in a S tar Trek movie. So it was exciting. I hope I didn’t jump the shark, but I’m really happy that I got to do it.

How long were you on set playing Moto?

LANGENKAMP: I had three days on set, maybe four. The first day was in the brig, when the Enterprise characters are imprisoning Khan. The second day was also in the brig, when Alice Eve and Simon Pegg get transported back to the Enterprise after their adventure. And then I was in the funeral scene at the very end, but that didn’t make it on screen at all.

Your family’s history actually intersected with Star Trek even earlier, right?

LANGENKAMP: My father-in-law, Lance Anderson, who started my husband in the business, actually worked on Star Trek IV . One of the first jobs my husband ever had was to make the whale for that movie. Those were some of the first pictures I ever saw of my husband working with his dad. They were making this gigantic mold. They even took a wall out of the studio so they could accommodate the length of that piece. I remember thinking to myself, as a person who was brand new to the industry, “Wow, I had no idea how any of that was made.” But my husband and his dad worked together for many years, working on The Serpent and The Rainbow, Shocker and Pet Sematary .  Finally, his dad started to retire and there was a void in the shop. I really wanted to participate and there was definitely a need in there for a person to do the books and sweep the floor at night. So I kind of wormed my way in, and the first job in which I really became an active participant was Dawn of the Dead . We went to Canada and I was the coordinator of the shop in Toronto, where we made that film. It went really well and the film turned out great, and I really fell in love with the whole process. Since then, we’ve done a lot of movies and Into Darkness is our latest work.

Aside from Moto, what else in Star Trek Into Darknes s is the AFX team particularly proud of?

LANGENKAMP: I would say there are several different makeups that David is proud of, and for different reasons. The Nibiran makeup at the top of the movie was very challenging. There were a lot of those characters and they wanted them to all look unique, but they didn’t have a ton of money to spend on the CGI set piece. It’s so expensive to create something like that. So that was in the works for seven or eight months, designing what that would be. It was a series of layers of clay put on each man, and it’d take four or five hours to put a layer on and dry it, then layer and dry, layer and dry, so you get that real crackly, flaking-off look. It’s a real fun look to think about, but doing it was tough. We’d start at 2 a.m. on every one of those shooting days and we had a crew of about 20 people, maybe even 30 people all told, working to get those men ready. Then the costume department also really participated by developing a few zip-suits that the guys in the very-far background could just zip themselves into so that we wouldn’t have to prepare their whole bodies.

moto star trek

The bar scene has a wonderful makeup. There’s a female and a male, and they have kind of an artichoke-looking head with acrylic little pieces that shimmer. In the scene, you couldn’t really see how beautiful those makeups were, but those were my favorites by far. Mark Garbarino applied those makeups and developed them in our shop. Then we had a lot of pull-over masks that were really beautiful, but in this kind of movie there’s so much story to tell, so much action and tons of CGI, that the extras in the background kind of get lost in the shuffle. The green girl was great to do. It’s just really fun to see all these things come alive. And, I think, technically, the Klingons are the most beautiful makeups in the movie. It looked so great on the actors.

Last question before we let you go. You coordinate everything for AFX Studio, doing the books and lining up gigs, etc. So, what does AFX have coming up, and are you still in the acting game?

LANGENKAMP: Yes. Gosh, I’d love to get some more acting parts. But I don’t know, doing makeup parts, where you’re wearing makeup that totally covers your head, hair and neck, it’s very comforting for an actress of my age. The older you get, you just find your vanity creeping into the way you imagine yourself. So, when I got a chance to wear this kind of makeup it was actually really liberating. You don’t worry about anything except your character and being on time. But we’ve been doing a lot of different projects at AFX: features, commercials and TV shows. We’re creating makeup effects for a new Universal show called Crossbones , which stars John Malkovich. We also created the main monster character for Indigenous , which is a Chupacabra movie coming out next year.

And in terms of acting, I just did a movie that was all women who’d been in horror movies. It’s called The Butterfly Room . I did another film, Home , which is a horror thriller set in Los Angeles. They’ll both be out next year. And I’m always promoting my documentary I Am Nancy , which is about my experience playing Nancy Thompson and her impact on the fans of Nightmare on Elm Street . It’s really a love letter to the fans. Next year is the 30th anniversary of A Nightmare on Elm Street , so I’ll be doing conventions and celebrating that.

  • Our expert's notes Moto (Heather Langenkamp) mask from J.J. Abrams’ 2013 science-fiction spectacular, Star Trek Into Darkness. The film follows Captain James Kirk (Chris Pines) and the crew of the Starship Enterprise as they face-off against a traitor in their ranks. Moto is a Starfleet security officer who is seen briefly when Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) imprison Kahn (Benedict Cumberbatch) in the brig of the USS Enterprise. This Moto mask is made of latex and is test painted but unfinished. The mask features a bulbous head and a large, wrinkled chin. The edges of the mask and shoulders are frayed and torn and the back of the mask features a long, thin slit opening for easier access. There are also straps inside for secure placement. This mask shows signs of wear from production use but remains in great overall condition.

What is the Motorcycle in Star Trek Beyond?

Star Trek Beyond Motorcycle

The Hilts PX70 motorcycle from the Star Trek universe…

Star Trek Beyond , which came out in 2016, is the thirteen film in the Star Trek franchise and the third installment in the series reboot. It stars Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk and was co-written by Simon Pegg, who plays chief engineer “Scotty.”

In the film, the Enterprise is destroyed by an alien starship swarm commanded by the film’s principal villain, Krall, who is searching for an ancient bioweapon known as the Abronath. The survivors of the Enterprise crash on a nearby planet, Altamid, where they link up with Jaylah, a scavenger who lives in the grounded USS Franklin , an early Starfleet vessel that went missing over a century earlier.

When Jaylah gives Kirk a tour of the USS Franklin , Kirk is particularly fascinated by a motorcycle he sees on the bridge. Says Kirk:

“Hey, that’s a PX70. My dad used to have one when he was kid. My mom said he used to put her on the back of it, drive her nuts.”

Star Trek Beyond Motorcycle

Star Trek Beyond Motorcycle Chase Scene

Later, Kirk shows off some serious motocross skills on the PX70, when he rides the motorcycle straight into Krall’s camp as a diversion. He uses Jaylah’s holographic replication device to create multiple versions of himself on the motorcycle, which distracts the enemy and allows Jaylah, Spock, and McCoy to sneak in unnoticed. Ever since the film hits theaters, moviegoers have wondered about the motorcycle.

Star Trek Beyond Motorcycle

Hilts PX70 Motorcycle

Hilts PX70 Motorcycle

In the special features for the film, it’s revealed that the manufacturer of the PX70 motorcycle is Hilts — named after Steve McQueen’s character in The Great Escape . At least two of the motorcycles were built for the film, painted green with Military Assault Command Operations (MACO) / USS Franklin insignias. The main man behind the motorcycles is the film’s art director, Tom Sanders , who’s worked on such films as Days of Thunder , Hook , Braveheart , Saving Private Ryan , and many more.

moto star trek

The PX70 bikes in the film are obviously customized to hide their original make and manufacture — after all, it would not do to have an early 21st century dirt bike riding aboard the  USS Franklin , a 22nd-century Freedom-class starship and the first earth ship to reach Warp 4. Speculations have abounded as to the donor bikes for the Hilts PX70. Theories have ranged from BMW F700 to BMW GS450 to BMW G450X to KTM SX-F to Honda CRF with the headlight from a K50/K51 BMW R1200GS.

What do you guys think?

' src=

That’s a KTM SX-F 450 (or its twin the Husqvarna FC450), probably a 2015 model – with BMW headlights and customized body parts and other stuff.

' src=

were does the petrol come from in the story when captain kirk used it to distrack the enemy, as petrol and diesel will be phased out in 2030 and captain kirks time is in the 23rd century?.

' src=

Kirk simply walked to the replicator and requested a gallon of unleaded gasoline. There were simple food and chemical replicators in 22nd Century ships. Was Scotty supposed to build a tiny refinery after finding crude oil on a desert planet and beaming it out of the ground? Or maybe the bike was actually antimatter powered and used sound effects to make it sound macho.

Remember when we wore cell phones on belts? This Motorola phone started the trend

Compared with other cellphones of its day, the first famous flip phone was an amazingly sleek, cutting-edge device.

moto star trek

This special-edition Motorola StarTAC "Rainbow" version is about as vintage as you can get.

In 2020, it's almost hard to remember a time before cellphones were at the center of daily life. But I recently purchased a retro relic that made me appreciate the mobile revolution in a brand-new way: the  Motorola StarTAC , the flip phone that changed everything.

Unabashedly plastic, flaunting its roughly 1.75-inch screen like some kind of cellular royalty, the StarTAC was easily as iconic in 1996 as the  iPhone  is now.

The rare  StarTAC 70 "Rainbow"  edition I snagged on eBay looks like a child's plastic plaything, a stack of terraced ridges that starts with a bump the color of earwax before cascading down to blue, green, that camel yellow again and finally to brick red on the back and sides. It has a SIM card the size of your Visa, a pull-out antenna wobbling on a slender stalk and a hinge that lets you fold it in half to slide the handset into your pocket.

It's adorable, ridiculous, and above all, irresistible.

Motorola StarTAC first flip phone

You had to pull out the StarTAC's antenna to make a call.

The Rainbow StarTAC version is from 1998, but Motorola -- already legendary for placing the first-ever cell phone call in 1973 -- had applied for the StarTAC trademark three years before. In fact, that was 25 years ago, in 1995 . A quarter of a century.

motorola-startac-4

The original Motorola StarTAC was the sleek, bleeding edge of cell phone communication when it debuted in 1996 for $1,000.

It wasn't until Jan. 6, 1996, that the black plastic phone officially debuted, but when it did, the result was momentous.

The original StarTAC was so small by the standards of the day -- most phones were 5 to 7 inches tall -- that Motorola called it a "wearable cellular telephone." Just add a hip holster. (Scroll to the end for the full specs compared to the $1,000 iPhone 11 Pro and Galaxy S20 Plus .)

StarTAC almost immediately achieved the pinnacle of celebrity, pressed up to the faces of movie stars on the silver screen before snapping shut into an ultraportable device. It represented a mobile future now easily taken for granted.

And it cost a small fortune. $1,000 in 1996 dollars, the equivalent of $1,682 in today's money .

That's at a time when your typical portable handset from Nokia or AT&T cost $100 or less with a two-year contract.

Back then, few would have predicted that this toy of a cell phone resting on my knee would almost single-handedly change the world.

But in 1996, the StarTAC was like nothing anyone had seen before.

Cell phones in 1995: From shoulder bags to the 'cusp of change'

Cellular devices in 1995 were mostly symbols of the rich and powerful, the movers and shakers. The US had 33.8 million wireless subscribers by the end of 1995, about 12.4% of the population, according to the CTIA , the dominant US wireless trade association.

That figure included cell phones, and also pagers, a clip-on pocket device with cellular connectivity and a ticker-type screen just spacious enough for a string of numbers . Compare this figure to the wireless subscriber count at the end of 2019, where 96% of American adults owned cell phones and 81% used smartphones, according to the Pew Research Center .

at-t-3045-bag-cell-phone-1994

Twenty-five years ago, this "transportable phone" -- yes it was a cell phone -- would have plugged into your car through the power socket.

"We were on the cusp of change," said Sheldon Hochheiser , AT&T's corporate historian, as his Jersey-inflected voice echoed faintly through my speakerphone. "In 1995, the predominant, most likely way we would have been having this conversation was over landline phones."

A 21-year veteran of AT&T, Hochheiser has a Ph.D. in History of Science and Technology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The 69-year-old is a wealth of knowledge about wireless networks' earliest days, hailing all the way back to 1876, Alexander Graham Bell's original patent on the telephone .

at-t-3730-cell-phone-1994

Yes, this AT&T 3730 from 1994 was a cellular telephone you might have owned before the StarTAC became more affordable.

Three kinds of "true" cell phones existed in 1995, Hochheiser remembers:

  • Portable phone : Looked like a brick and weighed not much less than a pound. The Nokia 909 from Nov. 1995 is one example of many.
  • Bag phone : Came in a carrying case , like a shoulder bag, with a battery pack. Weighed about three pounds. You know, the kind of thing you'd carry on your horse if you needed a full-power, long range cell phone in rural America (see photo below).
  • Transportable phone : Temporarily plugged into your car through the power socket ( like this , and also above). Used by traveling salespeople who spent most of their time on the road.

There was also the Zonephone , "a novel personal communications system" for the UK, which was featured in the June 1996 issue of Popular Communications . Operating through an 800MHz local transceiver network as a cheaper alternative to cellular, the Zonephone had 40 hours of standby time and took four hours to recharge. It could be remotely disabled if lost or stolen.

But change was in the air for phone designs, and as cellular telephones slimmed down, more people began to covet them. After the StarTAC's debut, cell phone use shot up. By the end of 1996, 44 million wireless US subscribers used phones and pagers, equal to 16% of the total population.

1995-cellular-one-customer-with-motorola-bag-phone-250

The "bag phone," an earlier style of portable cell phone, came in a zippered pouch for "easy" conveyance. This Cellular One customer is using his horseside in 1995.

A $1,000 cell phone in 1996 didn't mean what you think it means

Have you ever considered a flip phone to be a sleek, wearable device? In 1996, Motorola did.

"The StarTAC phone creates for the first time an exciting new wearable category we believe consumers will embrace," said Robert N. Weisshappel, Motorola's executive vice president and general manager of the Cellular Subscriber Group, in the 1996 StarTAC's press release  (emphasis ours). "It can be worn fashionably as an accessory," the release went on to say.

(Motorola provided photos and details for this story, but was unable to grant an interview.)

So what do you get in a $1,000 phone in 1995? According to a glowing synopsis (PDF) in the June 1996 issue of Popular Communications, plenty.

The StarTAC was a "bad boy" that "gadget freaks" would love for its wearable holster, two removable batteries, four hours of talk time, vibration mode to announce incoming calls and "an incredible 47 hours of standby service." Its killer feature? A "smart" button to help use the phone one-handed.

motorola-startac-3

Early Motorola advertising for StarTAC's "flappable" "wings." For the world's first flip phone, its benefits were an open and closed case.

Its black-and-white screen measured under 2 inches, and when closed the StarTAC stood about 4 inches tall including the retracted antenna, which then extended another 3.3 inches out of the base when you wanted to place or receive a call. Weighing in at 3.1 ounces, this was the lightest and most compact phone the world had ever seen.

"What you got was a device you could use to make audio phone calls," Hochheister said. "It did not have any data capabilities. It could not send text messages. If you wanted to send text messages, you owned... a pager."

moto star trek

StarTAC, the bold flip phone inspired by Star Trek

Lore has it that the Star Trek TV show inspired the portable cell phone . After Motorola engineer Martin Cooper -- the one who made that infamous first cell phone call, watched an episode -- he had to make it happen. (The StarTrek TV rights are owned by CNET's parent company, ViacomCBS.)

"He said that watching Captain Kirk using his communicator on the television show Star Trek inspired him with a stunning idea -- to develop a handheld mobile phone," wrote Paul Sloane about Cooper's inspiration in Think like an Innovator (2016).

The Tricorder communication device seen throughout the entire Star Trek franchise most closely resembles a cell phone plus PDA, or personal digital assistant, a somewhat bulky do-it-all device that mashed up a handheld computer with an always-on network -- flip panel and all (at least on later versions).

And why not? The Star Trek series has long been heralded as the  predictor of watershed technologies , including universal translation. In the case of the modern flip phone, the story is entirely possible. The Star Trek original series debuted in 1966, 30 years before the StarTAC.

popular-communications-june-1996-motorola-startac

"When the Motorola StarTac is opened, it turns into a really great looking communicator straight from the deck of the Starship Enterprise." (Popular Communications, June 1996)

As the world's first flip phone, the StarTAC inspired generations of phones, including today's Motorola Razr and Galaxy Z Flip foldables. It's Motorola we have to thank for the first cell phone, for the satisfying snap of flipping a clamshell phone closed, and for popularizing vibration mode.

The StarTAC is undoubtedly a device with an unforgettable legacy, but it wouldn't have existed without the phones that came before -- the Motorola MicroTAC and the legendary DynaTAC before that, the prototype of which made the world's first cellular telephone call.

"I think [that's] when it penetrated people's minds," Hochheister said of cell phone use catching on.

moto star trek

"Hey, it's not just neat, but it's useful," Hochheiser added. "My mother got one a few years before I did because she thought, 'Wow, if she ever breaks down somewhere, this could be a wonderful thing to ensure her safety.'"

Star Trek inspiration or not, the $1,000 Motorola StarTAC that flipped its way into history boldly went where no phone had gone before. I may have been too young in 1995 and 1996 to appreciate the sheer force of its innovation, but looking at the garish, er, vintage Rainbow flip phone in front of me now, I can absolutely confirm: it's bold.

No matter where the idea came from, one thing is certain. The StarTAC's portable size, features and ease of use (snap!) sparked people's imagination to the possibilities of what a cell phone could do -- not just for the rich and famous, but for ordinary folks like you and me.

Read more: "Motorola's StarTac ST7867W is small, light, and loaded with features. Operating this phone is quite simple, even if you don't read the manual."

( Star Trek Into Darkness )
