People also ask, where can I hunt Chital Deer? There are quite a few States and locations in Australia that have Chital deer, but the most popular Chital deer hunting location is North Queensland.
The next question people ask is how do you hunt Chital deer? The answer can vary greatly. Experienced hunters all have different methods that work well for them. But if your new or haven't hunted Chital before and depending on whether its archery or rifle or even muzzle loader, methods can vary.
In saying methods can vary - some things don't... like the norm... preparation of your hunting equipment the afternoon before you start your hunt. Having all your gear ready when the alarm goes off or your guide wakes you.
Headlamp at the ready, small back pack with water and a snacks, knife, binoculars, compass or GPS, camera or ph on silent, spare ammo or arrows, comfortable broken in boots or sneakers. Dressing for the conditions, as it will generally be very cold in the mornings and then it will warm up very quickly. So the ability to quickly and quietly remove a jacket is typical.
You are up before light for a quick tea or coffee and a snack before heading out to a location is normal for most deer hunts. The same applies around 2-3pm for an afternoon hunt till shooting light is gone. Your hunting guide will work with you to give you the best opportunity to get you onto a Chital stag.
We have some great land to hunt on, so dry and wet water courses, channels and dams are popular a location to find Chital deer. The edges of thick bush also can provide quick opportunities as well or a well planned ambush from a concealed location or tree stand.
Hunting on foot with slow and steady steps, careful not to break twigs and you're constantly stopping to glass for Chital is also a popular and proven method.
Other methods for hunting Chital deer can involve scouting in your 4WD until you spot a lone Chital stag or a small group and plan a stalk from a distance, this style can work extremely well too.
Make sure your rifle is sighted in one inch high at a 100 yards. Chital hunting with a rifle, we usually get a shot between 50 - 150 yards to 200 yards.
Archery hunting is of course the most challenging as most shots are 30-50 yards, so practice practice.
Other names Chital deer are known for or called... Chital, also called Spotted Deer, or Axis Deer, (Cervus axis, sometimes Axis axis), Asiatic deer, belonging to the family Cervidae (order Artiodactyla).
Chital Deer are not native to Australia, they are from India and Sri Lanka originally... in herds of up to 100 or more. Chital deer stands at 90–95 cm (35–37 inches) at the shoulder.

We offer one-week packages, which include fully guided 5-day hunts for a maximum of 6 persons in the Aboriginal Reserve of Western Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia. Day 1 and day 7 are for travelling purposes, so there is no charge for these travelling days. Or, you may wish to tailor your own hunt with additional hunting days.
Where we Hunt
The country is untouched with many billabong and river systems, beautiful scenic floodplains with an abundance of native bird life and awe inspiring panoramic views from the escarpments overlooking kilometres of breathtaking scenery. So, there is no peer pressure on any of the animals and it is often possible to stalk within metres of mobs of pigs and lone boars in the 100 kilo plus range.
All touring is conducted on 4×4 ATV Vikings, which are fully equipped and very manageable, even for the novice driver. Hunters can choose to drive their own ATV, or they can be driven by one of our guides. We use the 4×4 ATV’s daily from base camp to explore the diversity of the terrain. Once we reach a specific location, we continue our hunt with a leisurely under-canopy walk amongst paperbark and tropical palm jungles – guaranteed to get the adrenalin pumping!
You will see from our galleries that you would be staying in a comfortable, fully-equipped bush lodge with all the mod-cons; a generator provides electricity 24 hours a day and all linen is supplied.
How to get here
Many of our clients choose to charter a light aircraft or helicopter for a 1-hour scenic flight to our airstrip in Western Arnhem Land, with a return flight at the end of their tour. Details of the charter companies are available under Getting Here. Alternatively, we can pick you up from your hotel in Darwin early (6.00am) on the first day and it would be a 5 – 7 hour drive to base camp in air conditioned Landcruisers, with the return journey leaving camp mid- to late-afternoon and arriving at your hotel in Darwin no later than 10.00 pm on the last day of your tour.
What’s Included
Our Boar Hunting Safari package includes all road transfers, permits, accommodation, trophy fees, use of a Yamaha ATV Viking, insurance, first-class meals and beverages. We have a special liquor licence to allow moderate consumption of alcohol by our clients at the end of a day’s hunt at our camps in Arnhem Land. Havago Australia hunts are in several regions in Australia totaling millions of acres allowing us to offer the very best in hunting and fishing to all our clients all year round.
Pig hunting areas
We offer the pig hunter 2 choices the first being our base camp is in southern Queensland [east of Brisbane] which offers wild boar hunts. These hunts while whilst great fun and good pigs they have a management fee on the boars this ensures there is boars for the next hunters who come. These boars are not comparable in size or number to the dangerous huge wild boars of the northern regions of the Northern Territory or the Northern Queensland. Mostly in the northern regions there are no trophy fees but the daily rates are much more as it is more costly to conduct safaris due to the vast regions.
Wild boar hunts in South Eastern Queensland
Pig hunting combined with fresh water fishing for yellow belly, perch , bass and Murray cod is a hunters dream .
The pig hunting here is done on our property in the trap rock hills areas of the south western Queensland and whilst in traprock regions good boars can still be found lurking up gullies and waterways. The boars while not generally as large as their northern cousins are a definite challenge for any hunter and mobs can be hunted each day. There is always yabbying and fishing along the many sleepy river banks . Silver Perch, Yellow Belly [ Golden Perch] Bass and Catfish.
Closest airport: Brisbane or Toowoomba [ West Brisbane]
Representative Trophy size :
