I f you love to surf and ski then you’ve probably faced the near-impossible task of choosing between the beach and the mountains. But what if we told you that scattered around the world are a number of special places where you can surf and ski on the same day? You’ve heard it right. You can achieve the dream in the wilds of Canada’s Vancouver Island , California’s Orange County, and Maine . There’s opportunities around Biarritz, a swanky resort on France’s Basque coast , and Christchurch, set between New Zealand’s Pacific shoreline and rugged mountains, too.

At these thrilling destinations the waves and snow are less than a four hour drive away, meaning that you can paddle out to an uncrowded lineup and carve up on powdery slopes in the same day. Here we’ll opt for a morning surf and an afternoon ski, but ultimately the order of play is down to you.

Biarritz, France

Ever since surfers started riding the hollow waves at Cote des Basques and Grand Plage in the 1950s, Biarritz has been the historic surfing capital of Europe. The surf at this stylish Basque seaside town works all year round, although wintertime brings notably huge swells — the legendary Belharra wave in the nearby town of Saint Jean-de-Luz is known to reach 50 feet and over. Ask any hardcore local surfer and they’ll probably trade the sun-drenched and overcrowded summer for the chill of winter. For classes on Cotes des Basques beach try the French Surf Federation-approved Jo Moraiz Surf School .

For the afternoon adventures, drive inland for just over two hours (about 95 miles) to the La Pierre Saint-Martin ski resort in the western Pyrenees. Consider parking up at Cave Verna to tour an illuminated cave system and underground waterfalls before continuing to the slopes. The resort itself has 25 pistes at heights of up to 7,200 feet and spread over 185 acres of skiable terrain. Besides skiing and snowboarding, the family orientated resort offers snow scooter riding, snowshoeing and tobogganing. You might want to book an overnight stay at one of the village’s chalets for a well-earned rest amid a pristine pine forest.

Note: Famed for its almost 4,000-foot vertical drop, Station Gourette is an alternative skiing option located in the western Pyrenees region.

Christchurch, New Zealand

Thoughts of New Zealand regularly evoke images of lush valleys and snowy mountains, but the Pacific nation is a superb surf destination, too. Start in the coastal suburbs of Christchurch that sit along the shores of Pegasus Bay. Beginners should stick to Scarborough Beach, where waves are best two to three hours either side of high tide. Those in search of a fast moving beach break and barrels can check out Taylors Mistake Beach, which works well on all tides. There’s free beachfront parking at both spots, and changing facilities at Taylors Mistake, should you want to clean up before moving on.

From Christchurch it’s just a 90-minute (70 mile) cruise through rural landscapes to the 900-acre Mount Hutt Ski Area . If you haven’t refueled around Christchurch then take the chance to delve into the Canterbury region’s viticulture. Melton Estate offers lunches and wine tastings from Thursday to Sunday — of course, it all depends on how much time you have and if you can decide on a designated driver. After all, you’ll be eager to hit the slopes on 7,185-foot-tall Mount Hutt, which receives a monster snowfall from June to October.

Note: Remember that New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere, so the ski season is opposite to the US.

Orange County, US

With rugged mountains rising above a dramatic Pacific coastline, Southern California seems made for the surf-and-ski crowd. Winter surfing SoCal-style means big waves, small crowds and chilly waters, and surfers are spoiled for choice in Orange County. Huntington Beach and Newport Beach are consistent year-round and remain mellow in wintertime, thus invite beginners to enjoy the fun. Drop into Newport’s Endless Sun Surf School for classes. Confident boarders can join the pros and natives at the five breaks of Trestles — it’s a mile-long walk from the parking lot to the beach, but the adrenalin rush will make it feel like a short hop.

It’s the best part of a three hour (120 mile) drive to Bear Mountain Ski Resort , either via a section of the Cleveland National Forest or with a detour around the Temecula Valley Wine Country. We wouldn’t blame you for stopping for a tour of the award-winning Wilson Creek Winery or being tempted by a hike along the short San Juan Loop Trail. However, over 400 acres of skiable area, 55 runs and some of the best terrain parks in the US await on Bear Mountain. There’s plenty of waterfront accommodation in Big Bear Lake, too, if you’ve nowhere else better to go.

Note: November through March is prime time for spotting gray, humpback and minke whales off the Southern California coastline.

Scarborough, US

It’s usually only local New Englanders and true surf fanatics that are brave enough to plunge into the Atlantic waters of Maine in winter. Yet, if you are happy with that ice-cold sensation and want to score big surf then a trip to Scarborough will produce some memorable sessions. One thing is for sure, you won’t be competing with crowds along the seven mile stretch of surfable water at Old Orchard Beach, which can witness ten-foot-high waves. Elsewhere along the coastline, Higgins Beach and Fortunes Rock are the places to be. Stay at the forested Bayley’s Camping Resort and you’ll be a quick drive from a sunrise surf at Pine Point Beach.

From nearby Portland the US Route 302 leads all the way to Shawnee Peak (about an hour’s drive). The drive is a delight, passing a collection of glacial lakes, such as the immensely deep Sebago Lake, on the way. With an offer of 40 trails, seven glades and three terrain parks, there’s enough to make you want to swap the surfboard for a pair of skis or snowboard. There’s uphill and night skiing, too, in case you’ve the energy reserves. You’ll also be just an additional hour’s drive from the notably larger Sunday River Resort and its 135 trails.

Note: Maine’s ski season extends into early April, which is handy if you want to wait for slightly milder temperatures both in and out of the water.

Vancouver Island, Canada

Few people are aware that Tofino, on the wild western coast of Vancouver Island, is the surfing capital of Canada. The peninsula outpost has 22 miles of all-but empty beaches, many of which fall within the Pacific Rim National Park. Akin to many surf spots, the waves are higher here in winter. That said, Chesterman Beach, Covey Bay Beach and Long Beach all have forgiving days ideal for newbies. If this is your first time in the water, the Pacific Surf Co. will soon have you popping up. Come with a tent and you can pitch at Covey Bay and Long Beach in preparation for the dawn surf that’ll allow for the afternoon ski.

To reach British Columbia’s Mount Washington Alpine Resort , you first need to embark on a three and a half hour road trip past mirror lakes and around old-growth forests. Cathedral Grove is certainly worth a pit stop to admire giant cedars and picnic on a lakeside, and so is the Cumberland Brewing Co. for crisp craft beers. It’s hard not to have fun on Mount Washington, which receives some of North America’s heaviest snowfall. You can ski here until late-March and the extra spring sunlight aids in making surf-and-ski days last longer.

Sun or snow? Summer or winter? It’s an argument my partner and I have a lot. So what if you can’t choose between a surfing trip or a ski/snowboarding break? How about doing both on the same day? It’s a great way to plan a trip that everyone will love! 

Sometimes called the “daily double” or the “twofer,” surfing and skiing — or snowboarding — on the same day has become a bit of an obsession for many. It might be a nightmare to pack for, but it’s definitely something to experience if you can. 

Here are 9 of the best destinations to enjoy the sea and snow in 1 day.

Here are all 9 destinations on a map before we look at each one.

Perhaps the most shocking place to find snow and surf in 1 day is in Lebanon. Just an hour outside Beirut, you’ll find the Middle East’s largest snowboard and ski resort, Mzaar . It has a decent length season (similar to the Alps) and consistent snow, as well as over 80 kilometers of trails.

Less than an hour’s drive away, you’ll be on the coast and can grab your surfboard. Widely recognized as one of the best up-and-coming surf locations, the area has warm water, and swells are fairly consistent year-round but are generally best in winter. 

Tyre in the south, Jiyeh outside Beirut, and Batroun further north are some of the best places to ride the waves on the Lebanese coast. 

Perhaps the home of surfing, Hawaii is the ultimate surfing destination, but it’s a very overlooked skiing/snowboarding destination. Not many people even know that snow sports are possible on these exotic Pacific islands!

The entire island chain offers some of the best surfing in the world. However, to be close to the snow, you need to head to the island of Hawaii , also called the Big Island.  

The island is dotted with surf spots, but some of the best are near Kona and Hilo . Then, during the winter months, the two peaks of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea get a dusting of snow, making it possible to surf in the morning and then ski and snowboard after lunch. 

The snow is limited, and there aren’t many trails, but the island is one of the places where the time between sea and snow is the shortest. You can get out of the water and be on the slopes in under an hour.

3. New Zealand

With over 1,500 kilometers of coastline, New Zealand offers excellent surfing all year round. However, due to the massive swells during the winter, summer (Northern Hemisphere winter) surfing is better for beginners. 

So anyone looking to surf and snowboard or ski on the same day must know how to handle big waves during the winter months. If that’s you, then New Zealand is ideal because you can get from sea to snow in less than 1 hour. 

The North Island has some famous surfing spots, including Raglan and Piha. More southerly spots like New Plymouth are also incredible, and it’s less than an hour’s drive to snow-capped Mount Taranaki. 

On the South Island, Christchurch offers sunny surfing with dolphins. Then, hop in the car, and in under 2 hours, you’ll be at one of New Zealand’s best snow resorts, Mount Hutt . These 2 locations are very popular with people looking to do the daily double of sea and snow.

Okay, the surfing here might be a bit colder than most people are used to, but Iceland has endless snow-to-surf possibilities if you’re willing to brave the cold. 

One of the great things about snow in Iceland is that you can choose between classic downhill skiing and snowboarding, or Nordic skiing. 

Thanks to the island’s northern location, the snow season here is pretty long, from November to late May. This happily coincides with the best surfing time, which is between October and March.

You can get some pretty big Atlantic swells in the southwest of the island near Reykjavík , giving you some epic surfing opportunities. Or, head north to the Troll Peninsula for heli-skiing/boarding and some epic surfing (only for the brave — cold water wetsuits and drysuits are essential!).

Another unusual place to experience the daily double is Morocco. The drives are slightly longer, but the rugged, unmarked trails and empty beaches with epic swells make it a different, wilder experience than other places with sea and snow. 

Taghazout is an incredible place to surf, with big, powerful Atlantic waves and surprisingly warm water. Its location and geography mean it has something for every level of surfers. 

The ski resort at Oukaïmeden is a relatively long drive (5 hours) from the beach, but it’s worth it. 

It’s rough and wild, and you can gaze at the High Atlas Mountains at your leisure as you fly down the slopes. 

6. Australia

Australia is arguably one of the world’s most well-known and popular surf destinations. People flock here every year to enjoy the warm waters and incredible waves. 

And while skiing and snowboarding are fairly limited in Australia, there are still a few places where you can both surf and enjoy the fresh powder. 

Ben Lomond National Park on the island of Tasmania offers surprisingly good snow, and its proximity to the coast makes snow and surfing in a single day possible.

Although you won’t be surfing on world-class waves, it’s ideal for beginners and people looking just to enjoy doing both sports in a day. 

On the mainland, you’ll want to head south to Victoria to ensure you get good snow. The best resorts are the easily accessible Mount Buller , the family-friendly Falls Creek , and the highest of them all, Mount Hotham , which also offers the most consistent snow coverage. 

The whole South Coast has some amazing surfing as well, but Bells Beach is very popular, and it’s just 4 hours by car from Mount Buller.

7. Continental United States

Of course, the continental US offers snow and surf on the same day, and not just in Hawaii !

For anyone on the West Coast, Southern California is the home to all the boards: snow, surf, and skate. 

You’ll find surf spots dotted along the coast, so it’s just a question of finding the best one to suit your level. Venice and Dana Point are suitable for beginners, while Malibu has a bit of everything and Newport Beach has waves to thrill experts. 

Once you’re done in the water, jump in the car, and you’ll never be more than 1.5 hours away from some pretty epic ski resorts. Mountain High Resort and Snow Valley Mountain Resort are some of the most famous. 

If you’re looking for East Coast options, Maine is probably your best bet. The Atlantic offers some pretty big winter swells, and the water is icy, but it makes for some great surfing. In particular, the area around Scarborough and Portland is great. 

Drive for an hour or so and you can hit Pleasant Mountain (formerly known as Shawnee Peak). Go a little further inland and you’ll get to Sunday River Resort , or even further to the epic Sugarloaf Mountain . 

France is a well-known skiing destination thanks to the Alps, but it’s not so well known for its surfing. And when people do think about the French surf scene, most think about the waters off northern France (far from the mountains).

However, Biarritz , in the southwest of the country, offers some incredible surfing and hosts international competitions. It’s around a 2-hour drive from the main town to get to Saint-Lary-Soulan , one of the largest ski and snowboarding resorts in the Pyrenees.

If you want to stick to the Alps, there is some surfing on the south coast, but it’s a slightly longer drive north to hit the southern French Alps. 

The resort of Risoul is one of the closest, while the larger Serre Chevalier is still possible to do in a day if you hit the surf early.

Chile is another up-and-coming destination for both surfing and snow activities, so it’s no surprise people are flocking to the country to do the daily double. 

As a Southern Hemisphere destination, its main surf and snow season is between June and September, and you’ll find big swells in the Pacific as well as consistent snow in the Chilean Andes.

The main ski and snowboarding area is Valle Nevado , which is said to be largest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere. There are other incredible resorts nearby, including La Parva, El Colorado , and Farellones. Heli-skiing and snowboarding are some of the best in the world there.

Some of the best surf spots in Chile are Pichilemu and Valparaiso , which are a 4- and 3-hour drive from Valle Nevado, respectively. 

The good news is that as well as epic waves and deep powder, it’s among the least expensive places to enjoy the snow and surf. 

Bonus: The others…

While these are the main spots to get in sea and snow sports in a single day, there are other places where you can do so such as South Africa, Finland, and Sweden. However, they either have very basic surfing or very limited snow. 

You can also find plenty of places in the Middle East and Australia that offer sandboarding and surfing. The UAE and Israel are great examples of such places (Dubai also has indoor skiing if you consider that skiing). 

But it’s not the same as hitting the slopes with fresh powder.

You missed Scotland. Aberdeenshire in particular. On its day, great surf and one hour later great skiing

Interesting. I can’t seem to find anything online about this at first glance.

You can swim and ski in here in Canada too! We’ve had 30c days in Calgary (which has many lakes inside the city) with world-class skiing just 1.5 hours away in Banff.

Yes, as mentioned there are plenty of other spots, but theses destinations are those that offer GOOD surf and GOOD ski/snow options 😉

Where Can You Ski And Surf In The Same Day? [Expert Guide!]

You can ski and surf in the same day, but it doesn’t always have to be cold. The Swiss Alps serve as a shining example of what a ski vacation can look like. The country’s largest ski resort , located in the Swiss Alps, hosted events all year long, giving the entire country the opportunity to enjoy the snowy scenery.

The same goes for Chile, which also happens to be one of the world’s greatest surfing destinations. Every summer, locals and tourists alike can be found riding the waves along the country’s coast.

Wherever you choose to go on vacation, the key to a successful ski trip is to be prepared. Make sure you pack the right equipment, stay in decent accommodation, and eat what’s available. After all, you’ll be away from home for a long time. The last thing you want is to be sick on your vacation.

Here’s a quick guide to make your next ski trip unforgettable.

The Best Equipment

The best equipment is vital for any sport. Without it, you’re prone to injury and unable to perform at your best. It’s important to invest in quality ski and surf gear, which won’t hurt your wallet too much. The best ski gear can cost you hundreds of dollars, which is why it’s important to know who you’re buying it from. Genuine ski equipment can be difficult to find, especially if you aren’t from the area, so make sure you’re buying something that will actually work on the mountain.

Similarly, the right surf gear is vital if you want to surf. The type of board you’ll need will depend on the sea you’re surfing on, but in general, you’ll need a narrower nose than a wider tail to generate enough speed. The wettest months are generally from June to August, so make sure you bring proper wet-weather gear to keep you warm. Dressing in layers is also important, and it’s always advisable to have more than one layer on – especially in humid climates. If you ever get cold, wet, or hot, it’s easier to take off a layer than it is to keep taking on water. This is especially relevant on a rainy day. Make sure you always pack a waterproof jacket, a warm beanie, a scarf, a hat, gloves, and a waterproof bag to store all this stuff in. If it’s freezing where you are, make sure you’re also carrying a beanie with a little hole in it, so you can let some air in. Remember to remove layers as needed – either layering up or taking them off – to stay comfortable. Feeling cold or hot is something you want to avoid while on vacation, especially in a new place or area you’ve never been to before. This makes it easier to injure yourself or pick up infections, so make sure you’re constantly mindful of what you need to do to stay healthy. If you have a health concern, be sure to check with the local doctor before you head off on your trip.

Skiing And Surfing Aren’t Necessarily Cold

There are many wonderful places to ski and surf, and the opportunity to ski and surf in the same day doesn’t have to be associated with cold temperatures. Every year, people around the world head to the Swiss Alps for some winter sport enjoyment. The biggest ski resort in the area, St. Moritz, is often referred to as the ‘winter capital of Switzerland’, and it’s not hard to see why. The area is filled with celebrities and rich socialites, who flock there each year to enjoy the slopes and drink the champagne. It doesn’t get any better than this!

If you ever get the chance to go there, take it. You won’t regret it. Besides, the snow in the Swiss Alps lasts for a really long time, so you’ll be able to enjoy your ski holiday for months. There are also wonderful resorts located in the summer in places like Tulum in Mexico or Portofino in Italy, where you can eat what’s served and drink sangria as you watch the sun set over the Mediterranean.

On the flip side, there are also wonderful places to ski and surf in warm climates. Places like the French Alps, for example, provide the perfect base for a summer ski trip, with fresh snowfall making for perfect powder. In places like New Zealand and Australia, it’s common to enjoy ski months in the summer, with the snow falling for weeks on end. The ski season in these places can start as early as May and go until October, so you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the activity any time of year. Of course, you’ll have to cope with the blazing sunshine and temperatures that can reach 40 degrees or more during the day. If you’re not used to it, it can be quite taxing.

Wherever you choose to travel to on vacation, be sure to keep in mind the best time of year to visit the place. Some places are better at certain times of year, so you might want to avoid going there during peak periods.

Decent Accommodation

If you’re on vacation, you’ll most probably end up in some sort of accommodation, whether it’s a camp or a hostel. Whatever type of accommodation you choose, make sure it’s decent. You’ll end up spending a lot of time there, so you want to make sure the place is comfortable and has everything you need. When it comes to comfort, a lot depends on the room you get. If you’re lucky enough to get a room with a fireplace, you’ll be able to enjoy that view of the snow while being cosy by the fireplace. On a cold night, the flames in that fireplace could provide some heat as well as the glow from the dancing flames provides some cozy warmth. It’s not just about the room though, as you’ll be sharing it with other people, so make sure the bathrooms and bedrooms are clean and well-maintained.

The boat was fast enough for my daughter to wakeboard and everyone was able to tube. We also tied up at shell island and had time to play. Bluetooth connection to the boat stereo lets you play your favorite sunshine playlist. 6 adults & 1 kid fit comfortably.

Our son was home from the army so we rented a 21’ deck boat for the day. We had an awesome time on the water. We were on the water shortly after we arrived. They make renting a boat super easy. We will definitely be back in the near future.
