RCA Studio B Tour

Despite being a lifelong Middle Tennessee resident, I am embarrassed to admit that I had never visited the world famous Studio B in the heart of Music City.

Fortunately, they reached out last week and asked if we’d like to come out for a tour and I happily replied, ABSOLUTELY!

This special tour is available only as an add-on to your Country Music City Hall of Fame admission. Tickets are purchased at the Hall of Fame and includes transportation to Studio B in their fancy blue bus! What kid doesn’t love a bus ride?

Once you arrive at the Studio you’ll enter the main lobby which includes lots and lots of pictures of familiar faces. Dolly Parton, the Everly Brothers, Jimmy Reeves, Dottie West, Willie Nelson and of course, the King himself, Elvis Presley, have all graced the entryway of this building over the years.

Your tour guide will take some time talking about the people you see in the photos, all while playing some of their greatest hits over the speakers. This is a great opportunity to have a little dance party with the kids! They’ll either love it and dance along or be absolutely mortified. Either way – you’ll have fun!

RCA Studio B Tour boarding the shuttle

The next part of the tour takes place just outside of the main studio. There is a short video presentation that you definitely want to pay attention to. The video shows actual footage of Jimmy Reeves recording in Studio B!

Recording at Studio B

Be sure to point out some of the features in the video (that tile floor, for instance) so that your kids can see the similarities when they enter the studio.

Inside the Studio

Upon entering Studio B you’ll take a seat for the rest of the tour. One unique feature of the room is the lighting. Apparently, Elvis Presley requested that mutli-colored lights, of red, green and blue, be installed throughout. He reportedly used the different lighting to create the ambiance he desired when recording, and it varied depending on the song.

studio b tour nashville tn

Our guide also told us about one particular night, when Elvis was in the studio and just couldn’t get the feeling right no matter what he tried. He eventually, after almost everyone had left for the night, turned out every single light in the room and recorded one of his most famous hits. I don’t want to give it away, you’ll have to visit Studio B to find out the rest of this story.

I will tell you, that sitting in almost complete darkness, listening to that song, in the very room it was recorded, was absolutely one of the coolest experiences of my lifetime! My kids might not have had as much of an emotional experience as I did, but they thought it was “really cool” none the less. Any mom of teenagers will tell you – that’s worth the price of admission right there!

Hours : Studio tours depart daily hourly from the Country Music Hall of Fame from 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM.  Tickets can be purchased online at this link.

Tour The Legendary Nashville RCA Studio B

If you are a fan of country music, RCA Studio B on Music Row in Nashville is an amazing place to visit.

RCA Studio B is one of the most iconic studios in Nashville, and it's easy to see why.

We are re-celebrating my 61st birthday 😉 thanks to having COVID last year, by visiting Nashville.

And it was a nice present on my birthday in addition to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum tour.

The studio was the birthplace of famous artists over the years, as well as many famous songs in history.

It has hosted artists like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and more.

Only those who purchase the Studio B Experience ticket at the Country Music Hall of Fame can tour it.

About Studio B

Studio B at RCA is a place of legend. It was built by Chet Atkins, who helped bring country music to new heights with his production skills and sound that became known as the "Nashville Sound" in homage to him.

Tour of The Legendary Nashville RCA Studio B

Artists such as Waylon Jennings on "Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line", and other famous songs recorded here include Oh Lonesome Me' by Dan Gibson and Dolly Parton’s "I Will Always Love You."

There were more than 1,000 hit songs, over 200 Elvis Presley recordings, and 40 million-selling singles from 1957 to 1977.

Is The Studio Still Used?

It closed down in 1977 but today it’s preserved as a museum by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum to save it for future generations.

Elvis recorded more than two hundred songs at the studio and ironically it closed the same month that Elvis passed away.

Tour of The Legendary Nashville RCA Studio B

It is most famous for having been the place where Elvis Presley recorded his first number one hit "Heartbreak Hotel" and many other songs that would go on to define rock and roll.

You can stand right where Elvis stood when he made history!

This historic site has been carefully preserved to look exactly like it did back then so you can experience what it was like to be there with him as he changed music forever.

How long is the RCA Studio B tour?

The tour is approximately one hour long. Your guide will offer stories about many artists and play some of the top hits that were recorded there.

Upon entering, you will see three walls filled with pictures of musicians from the beginning to closing in 1977 with the years above them.

Tour of The Legendary Nashville RCA Studio B

And then there is one wall totally devoted to the King himself, Elvis Presley.

ELVIS PRESLEY HITS RECORDED AT HISTORIC RCA STUDIO B WALL OF FAME

The guide played a variety of songs from some of the artists and told us some stories.

He was just a young gentleman in college and it was amazing how much he knew.

He will then take your group down a hallway to see the sound room where old tape machines and mixing boards reside.

THE SOUND ROOM

The Echo Chamber

After that, you will head over into the big attraction of the actual echo chamber.

the echo chamber

You will see several piano's including Elvis Presley's Steinway piano. Which by the way has its own Facebook page .

ELVIS STEINWAY PIANO

You aren't allowed to touch the pianos, most likely because of COVID, but they are still amazing to see.

There are multiple pianos that were used by the artists and are still in the same condition as when they closed.

Scratches, dents, and more, even the Hammond B-3 Organ still sits in the echo chamber.

Are You Lonesome Tonight

The sound of the music sounds incredible as it should. And the tour guide will even dim the lights to get you in the right listening mood.

Elvis recorded " Are You Lonesome Tonight " all night in total darkness in order to get the song just right after his release from the Army.

And because it was dark, Elvis stumbled and hit the microphone at the end of the recording.

They thought they were going to have to record the entire song again. But his manager told him he could fix it.

And while most of it is gone, if you listen carefully at the end of the song, you can still hear a faint sound of him hitting the microphone.

While we couldn't go into the sound room, you can easily peer through the window to see it all.

the sound room at rca studio b

On your way out, you will see it, the small X on the floor made with tape. That right there is the "sweet spot!"

the sweet spot at rca studio b

Standing on the X made for the best sound so it was used by many artists.

You won't regret it but keep your camera close at hand. I may have gone a bit overboard taking pictures but that's normal for me. 😂

the echo chamber room

Our tour guide did recommend taking pictures upon entering each area rather than after the fact.

Once our tour ends everyone needs to quickly get back onto the bus so they can keep things running smoothly.

Legendary Artists

Some of the artists that recorded at RCA Studio B were Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, The Everly Brothers, Eddy Arnold (my mom's favorite), Ernest Tubb, and surprisingly David Bowie just to name a few.

rca victor

Dolly Parton had her first "hit" there, literally. When I say "hit," I don't mean song.

She showed up for her first day of recording and being a new driver, she hit the side of the building. Ooops.

She went in to record as if nothing happened and did her recording. No one knew it was her car so no one said anything...not even Dolly, lol.

Military Experiences

studio b tour nashville tn

This itinerary, created especially for military groups, begins on world-famous “Music Row” with a guided tour of Historic RCA Studio B, Nashville’s most legendary studio, and one of the most important and successful studios in the world. Opened in 1957, RCA Studio B has produced more than 35,000 songs, over 1,000 top ten hits, and 262 recordings by Elvis Presley. Following the tour, your group will be assembled “choir-style” to record your military branch song. At the end of the recording we will have each member of the group step to that famous microphone to state his name and rank, which will be included at the end of your recording. All of your participants will then have their buddy’s voices on CD forever, as a one-of-a-kind keepsake.

The second leg of this itinerary will bring your group to tour the incredible Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Country music has long had a special kinship with the United States military. From the plaintive ballads of World War II that often lamented soldiers being separated from their families, like Kitty Wells’ “Heartbreak USA,” to the rousing “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue” by Toby Keith, penned following the attacks on September 11, 2001, country music has always represented the feelings and sacrifice of the American soldier. The Museum is a world-class facility featuring thousands of priceless artifacts, theater experiences, live music, a full-service restaurant, and the best variety of souvenirs, apparel, and music in the city.

We appreciate your service to our country, and we will strive to make this an experience you will never forget.

The process of group songwriting requires creativity and communication, leadership and compromise, all to reach a shared goal. In this special team-building program, join one of Music City’s most accomplished songwriters for an hour-long session on the craft of songwriting. By offering personal insight and direction, the writer guides your group in creating an original song. This entertaining and highly interactive program promotes group problem solving while exploring corporate ideals and goals in the creation of an original “Company Song.” Once written, your team will rehearse and record their new song and everyone will receive a CD copy of their new “team” accomplishment.
