Known as New Delhi's backpacker haven, to say that Paharganj is busy would be an understatement. People, carts, vehicles, animals, and beggars compete for every inch of space on the crowded streets. The neighborhood rolls out in a sprawling labyrinth of crumbling buildings and dark alleyways.

Surviving Paharganj's chaos is not only possible; it can be fun. First, see some India travel tips and these important India essentials to prepare yourself.

Safety in Paharganj

Because Paharganj is rife with both poverty and tourists, crime does happen. Be mindful of your belongings while walking or sitting in restaurants. While pushing through the crowded environment, a deft hand reaching into your bag or pocket may go unnoticed.

Female travelers report being harassed even more than usual while walking in the area. Beggars are persistent and omnipresent. Giving money to even one can create a mob scene around you, as others find out. Sadly, giving handouts is not a sustainable solution to the problem.

Eating in Paharganj

Many eateries in Paharganj are tall, narrow slivers that are adorned with quiet rooftop gardens on top. Rooftop restaurants are the best way to escape persistent beggars and get a bird’s-eye view of the chaotic streets.

If you’re getting tired of Indian food, several street-level cafes in Paharganj offer Israeli food and Western-style breakfasts.

Drinking in Paharganj

Getting a beer in Paharganj can be a peculiar affair. Only a few places are legally licensed to sell alcohol, but your restaurant or hotel staff may run next door to purchase you a beer for a small commission. Don’t be surprised if your beer arrives warm or you’re asked to drink the beer secretively, slightly out of view while on a rooftop.

The small Gem Bar and Restaurant (located at 1050 Main Bizarre; open until midnight) is a popular place to grab a legal drink.

Shopping in Paharganj

Although daily life swirls by nonstop in Paharganj, the area caters to tourists, and you’ll find plenty of shops offering everything from incense to shoes. Don’t expect to do much window-shopping: most shops are small, cluttered spaces where an attendant will need to help you.

The Main Bazaar in Paharganj is the place to start looking for bargains , although you’ll still need to negotiate hard.

Budget Hotels in Paharganj

Backpackers and budget travelers stay in Paharganj for one reason: it’s cheap! You’ll find some of the cheapest accommodation available in New Delhi hidden among the labyrinth of streets in Paharganj. Hostels range from mostly acceptable to dark, nightmarish affairs. Fortunately, there is a small handful of clean, budget hotels in the area.

Getting Out of Paharganj

If you’ve had enough of the madness, you’ll, fortunately, find the gates to the bustling New Delhi Railway Station just outside of the area. Walking to the station is often quicker than fighting through traffic in a rickshaw.

Travel agencies dotted throughout Paharganj will book bus tickets for you to all popular points further afield. Because getting large buses down the busy, narrow streets is a challenge, you’ll most likely have to walk as a group quite a distance with your luggage to the outskirts of Paharganj before boarding.

So many tourists, especially budget travellers, end up staying in Paharganj. It’s located next to the New Delhi Railway Station, a major rail hub in India, and has loads of cheap accommodation. In fact, it’s commonly known as the backpacker area. But is Paharganj safe for tourists?

The short answer is not really – I would not want my friends or family staying there. I’ve been living in Delhi since 2020 (and visited multiple times before that). I’m pretty familiar with the city, including Paharganj.

It’s a great place to check out during the day, but not where you want to base yourself. There are better budget options elsewhere in the city.

Where is Paharganj?

Paharganj is in the north section of Central Delhi. It’s located next to the New Delhi Railway Station, one of the busiest train stations in India. If you are arriving or departing Delhi by train, it’s a convenient location.

The area is close to Old Delhi , and is gritty, congested and noisy like Old Delhi, but without the historic significance or charm.

It’s easy to explore Old Delhi and Connaught Place from Paharganj, but I still don’t recommend you stay there.

The nearest metro station to Paharganj is New Delhi, Gate 1, which exits by the Main Bazaar Road.

How Safe is Paharganj for Tourists?

There was a time when it was almost a daily occurence to find a tourist dead in a seedy hotel in Paharganj, but things have improved. The installation of CCTV cameras and a general clean up of the neighbourhood in preparation for the 2010 Commonwealth Games improved the safety of the area.

During the day Paharganj is a lively part of Delhi, famous for budget shopping and restaurants. In fact, Paharganj Market is one of the cheapest markets in Delhi , where you can pick up boho style clothing, souvenirs and incense. But at night Paharganj is not safe for tourists. The area is known for drugs, prostitution, crimes against women and petty theft.

The bottom line? Visit Paharganj during the day and enjoy the cheap shopping and food. Avoid it after dark and don’t drink there, even though it’s known for cheap alcohol.

Where Should I Stay Instead of Paharganj?

There are several excellent budget options in South Delhi. This is the greenest and safest part of Delhi to stay in. South Delhi is well connected by metro and close to many attractions and sites. My top recommendations are:

• Hosteller Delhi : A very popular hostel in South East Delhi within walking distance of the metro. This is a super friendly hostel that regularly hosts guest events and has an onsite cafe. There’s a common kitchen and the hostel offers private and dorm style rooms.

• Moustache Delhi : Another favourite hostel in the South East part of the city near the Bahai Lotus Temple . You can book a private or dorm room and there’s a community kitchen and garden.

• YWCA International Guest House : This property is older and dated, but the location is phenomenal. It’s in one of the best sections of South Delhi to stay in, close to many 5 star luxury hotels . Rooms are large and you’ll be within walking distance of many Delhi sites. You won’t find a better location at the price.

• Tatvamansi Homestay : A small hotel in South Delhi with large, comfortable rooms. It’s on a quiet, residential street overlooking a park and well located for exploring Delhi. It’s the most expensive option on this list, but there’s a common kitchen, so you can save money by doing your own cooking.
