Ravenna cruise port with two cruise ships docked

Venice to Ravenna Cruise Port Transfers Guide: Train + Shuttle

Ravenna Cruise Port : it’s small, it’s new, and if your cruise line promises a “Venice (Ravenna)” itinerary, be prepared for a scenic three-hour journey through the Italian countryside. Let’s just say, you won’t be having a drink in St Mark’s Square anytime soon! 🤣 In this guide, I’ll give you all the cruise transfer options from Venice Airport / city centre to Ravenna, so you can pick the one that works best with your flights and pre-cruise itinerary.

As Venice cracked down on mega-ships, Ravenna quietly emerged as a substitute embarkation port, primarily for Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises. And they weren’t alone – other cruise lines have sought refuge in nearby ports like Trieste and even further afield in Koper, Slovenia. When I first visited Ravenna in 2022, it was the port’s debut season with Royal Caribbean. Information was scarce, so I’m here to spill the beans on my experience and help you navigate this charming (and slightly off-the-beaten-path) cruise destination.

  • Venice to Ravenna Cruise Port: Is a DIY Transfer Easy? 😎😎😎 (Do-able, Needs Hustle)

1. Where is Ravenna cruise port?

(a) private car transfers, (b) cruise line coach transfers, (c) train transfers (diy), 3. ravenna cruise port: useful tidbits, step 1: venice airport (vce) to venice mestre train station, step 2: venice mestre station to ravenna station, step 3: ravenna train station to ravenna cruise port.

Ravenna Cruise Port Shuttle: Is It Available?

Venice to ravenna cruise port: is a diy transfer easy 😎😎😎 (do-able, needs hustle).

Let me be upfront with you. A DIY transfer from Venice Airport or city centre to Ravenna Cruise Port involves two changes of transport and changing trains. Many cruisers will say that this is just too much hassle. Especially if you’ve just flown a red-eye across the Atlantic and dreaming of a drink by the pool as soon as you embark. And that’s why I list all the options available to you, including private transfers and their approximate cost, so you can make a decision that’s right for your flights and itinerary.

Despite the complexity, here’s why I still rate the DIY Transfer from Venice to Ravenna Cruise Port as do-able but needs hustle:

  • Buses from Venice Airport to Mestre Station: There’s two bus routes (with two different bus companies), running direct buses from Venice Airport to Mestre Station. You will by-pass the centre of Venice altogether. This makes the journey easier and less crowded.
  • Venice Mestre to Ravenna requires change of train: You’ll need to change trains once to get to Ravenna. Even though there are lifts and escalators, I know this is too much hassle for some.
  • Ravenna port shuttle: But as soon as you exit Ravenna station, you’ll be met by the crew with luggage assistance.

Ravenna (Italy) Cruise Port Essentials: What You Need to Know

Ravenna Cruise Port, located in Porto Corsini, Italy, is 90 miles (145 km) south of Venice . Most international cruisers will fly into Venice Marco Polo International Airport (VCE) . If you have a choice, the closest airport is Bologna Guglielmo Marconi International Airport (BLQ) – 55 miles (92 km) west of Ravenna cruise port. Bologna may be a more convenient airport for those flying within Europe.

Ravenna Cruise Port Address: Porto Corsini, 48123 Ravenna, Italy – see this marked below 👇

2. Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) to Ravenna Cruise Port: Transfer Options

You have 3 options to get from Venice Marco Polo Airport to Ravenna Cruise Port:

  • Approximate travel time:  2 hours 30 minutes by car (using toll roads).
  • Opt for the scenic route?  For beautiful coastal views, add 20-30 minutes to your journey time.
  • €350-€400 for a car (sedan) with luggage
  • €400-€500 for a mini-van – so if you’re a family or a larger group, this will work out cheaper than getting two cars.
  • Approximate travel time:  2.5 hours to 3 hours by coach (using toll roads), plus you’ll most likely need to wait for your coach.
  • Approximate cost : I’ve been quoted amounts between US$40-$60 per person one-way – note priced in US$ as Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean will charge you in US$. Please check specifically for your cruise, as I’ve been quoted different amounts for different cruises. Plus Celebrity seems to charge more for the same transfer as RC!

2024 Update: Ravenna is still mostly used by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises . I would recommend that you consider this option, as a DIY transfer isn’t going to be that much cheaper and potentially more difficult than a 3 hour coach journey – see below.

  • Celebrity Cruises now sell the coach transfer on embarkation day starting from both the airport and from Isola Nova del Tronchetto. (It used to only sell the transfer from the airport.) Tronchetto will be easier for cruisers who have flown into Venice the day before and has stayed overnight. Tronchetto is an artificial island connected to Piazzale Roma via the People Mover. If you’re staying in Venice or Mestre overnight before embarkation date, it should be relatively easy for you to get to Tronchetto.
  • Royal Caribbean seems to be selling coach transfers from Venice city centre as well according to online reports. But I haven’t tried booking one, so I can’t be sure.

My step-by-step DIY Train Transfers guide is below . Note that the cruise port is approximately 8 miles (13 km) from the station but I’ll talk about shuttles to the port, too .

  • Approximate travel time: If you time your train transfers well, it takes about 4-5 hours from Venice Airport. From Venice city centre, it will take about 3.5 hours plus transit time between your hotel and the train station.
  • Approximate cost: From Venice airport: €25 per person. From Venice City Centre: ~€16. Add US$10 port shuttle per person from Ravenna train station to Ravenna cruise port, to be charged to your shipboard account.

This DIY route is useful if you would like to stay in Ravenna the night before. There’s in fact lots to see & do in Ravenna – check out my Whirlwind Guide to Ravenna with an itinerary on how to see all the UNESCO Heritage listed mosaics that Ravenna is famous for .

  • Ravenna Cruise Port Website: Check here for the latest port schedule ; site in Italian only but Google Translate works!
  • Currency: Euros
  • Card : I had no issues paying with card 95% of the time, from train tickets, local metro/bus tickets to restaurants, convenience stores and museums
  • Cash : Smaller businesses, such as bakeries and street vendors will be cash only, so I would advise to carry some euros in cash
  • Tip: “Bancomat” is the Italian word for ATMs
  • Language: Italian
  • Pre-cruise sightseeing : I would recommend Citymapper for Venice and Bologna if you’re doing some pre-cruise sightseeing in either city
  • DIY Transfer: Use TrenItalia’s English website to check live train times & book tickets; I used Google Maps to navigate around Ravenna
  • eSIM for roaming in Italy: For a great data connection without the huge roaming fees, use an eSim data pack from Airalo. I always recommend having a smartphone with a valid plan when you’re at port touring independently. Get US$3 off your first eSIM data pack from Airalo when you use ROXANN1666  when you sign up or apply it at checkout

Insider Tip: To simplify things (and potentially save some cash), here’s my tip: skip Venice city centre entirely and head straight to Mestre on the mainland. Not only will you avoid potential Venice Access Fees , but you’ll also find easier transport connections for your onward journey to Ravenna.

  • Frequency : Every 30 minutes, check timetables on ACTV website

  • Journey Time : Approximately 30 minutes
  • Where to buy tickets:  Ticket machine at the Public Transportation counter (Arrivals Hall), Tabacci shop (Arrivals Hall), or ATVO ticket counters
  • Finding the bus stop:  Exit the Arrivals Hall and follow signs for “Bus”. The ACTV bus stop will be clearly marked.
  • Frequency:   3 services per hour, up to 5 services during peak times, check timetables on ATVO website
  • Cost:  €10 one-way, €18 return
  • Journey Time:  Approximately 20 minutes – this is quicker as it is a non-stop service
  • Where to buy tickets:  ATVO ticket counter (Arrivals Hall or Baggage Claim) or automated machines
  • Finding the bus stop:  Exit the Arrivals Hall and follow signs for “Bus”. The ATVO bus stop will be clearly marked.

  • Frequency : Regional trains between Venice Mestre and Ravenna run hourly, with more frequent service during peak travel times. The journey is around 3 hours, with one change at Ferrara station. Some express trains between Venice and Ferrara can cut journey times down to 2 hour 10 mins.
  • Depart from Mestre station, called “ Venice Mestre “
  • Arrive at “ Ravenna ” station –  not  “Marina di Ravenna.” While Marina di Ravenna station is closer to the cruise terminal, there’s no way to cross the canal, so don’t go to the wrong station!
  • Timetables: Check the latest schedules on Trenitalia’s English website , Mestre is listed as “Venezia Mestre”
  • Tickets:  For (more expensive) express services, I would recommend pre-booking tickets. For the regional services, there is no need to pre-book unless you want to. Regional one-way tickets are €15.75. All seats are second class. Express ticket prices are variable, depending on demand, with first class seats available between Venice and Ferrara.
  • Luggage: Trains may or may not have dedicated luggage racks at the end of carriages on these Regionale Veloce (RV) services but there will be luggage racks on top of seats. Smaller bags will also fit underneath your seat. I also managed to fit a check-in bag underneath my seat! If you’ve booked seats in an express service, there will be luggage racks at the end of carriages.
  • Transfer at Ferrara: A pedestrian tunnel connects the 5 tracks at Ferrara station. Look for elevators to each track if you have check-in bags.

Venice City Centre to Ravenna Cruise Port: Train Transfer Options

  • Train Frequency: Regional trains between Venice and Ravenna run hourly, with even more frequent service during peak travel times. The journey is around 3 hours, with one change at Ferrara station. Some express trains between Venice and Ferrara can cut journey times down to less than 2.5 hrs.
  • Depart from Venice’s station, “Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia”
  • Arrive at “Ravenna” station –  not  “Marina di Ravenna.” While Marina di Ravenna station is closer to the cruise terminal, there’s no way to cross the canal, so don’t go to the wrong station!
  • Timetables: Check the latest schedules on Trenitalia’s English website , Venice’s station name is listed as “Venezia S. Lucia”
  • Tickets: For (more expensive) express services, I would recommend pre-booking tickets. For the regional services, there is no need to pre-book unless you want to. Regional one-way tickets are €16.15.
  • Transfer to Ravenna cruise port: See options below for transfers to Ravenna cruise port

Yes! Here are the shuttle options from Ravenna train station:

  • Official Ravenna Tourism Board Shuttle: This shuttle requires pre-booking and makes stops at Ravenna hotels and the train station. While convenient, it might be pricier (€20)
  • Cruise Line Shuttles : Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises offer their own shuttles directly from Ravenna train station. These are cost-effective (I was charged US$10 one-way to my cabin) and don’t require pre-booking. Look for a crew member outside Ravenna train station. They will offer luggage assistance at both the station and cruise terminal.
  • Local Bus : ( Not recommended) Bus 90 from Bologna will stop at “ Port Corsini Via Sirotti ” stop, approximately 10 minutes walk to the cruise terminal. Catch it outside Ravenna train station called “ Maroncelli Fs Box 1 ” stop. This service is largely catered to locals visiting the beaches close to Marina di Ravenna. Single tickets from the driver are €2. There is a luggage storage compartment underneath the bus. (The “bus” is a motorcoach!)

I don’t recommend relying solely on local taxis for reaching Ravenna cruise port. During my first visit in 2022 (when Celebrity & RC first started using Ravenna), I learned there were fewer than 10 licensed taxis in the entire town! While the situation might have improved since then, the sheer number of arriving cruisers makes securing a taxi challenging.

Whether you’re exploring the romance of Venice or heading straight to your ship in Ravenna, I hope this guide helps you get there smoothly. Found this info useful? Don’t forget to share it with other cruise enthusiasts who might be heading to this charming Italian port!

Celebrity Shuttle from Venice to Ravenna?

I have read that RCCL has shuttle transportation from Venice to the port of Ravenna the day of the ship's scheduled departure. I haven't seen anything about the shuttle service being offered by Celebrity even though they are owned by RCCL. Does anyone know if Celebrity offers this service? If so, does the shuttle leave from the airport or the Venice City Center? I appreciate any information anyone can share. Thanks.

I boarded Constellation in Ravenna last October, after having flown in from Venice the day before. Celebrity offered shuttles to Ravenna from Venice for a reasonable price (considering that it is a two-hour drive). I believe the cost was around $58 USD. The shuttles depart from either the airport (if you are flying in on the day of the cruise -- not recommended) or from an area convenient to Venice proper, e.g., Tronchetto, a parking/transportation area easily reached by taking the People Mover from Piazzale Roma.

I read about the shuttle here but as you say Celebrity was not super helpful. My TA booked it for me.

Thanks so much for this information. Do you recall the time of morning it leaves? Did you feel you arrived at the ship with plenty of time to get settled before sailaway?

There were two departure options. I believe they were 9:00 am and 11:00 am. I opted for the 11:00 am as I wanted to take a morning walk around Venice and didn't want to be in a rush.

When we got to Ravenna, there was some kind of inspection of the boarding area by port authorities, so we had to sit in the buses for about 30 minutes before joining quite a long line for processing and getting onboard. That said, it moved pretty quickly and didn't seem unreasonable, although some were pitching hissy fits.

We are taking the TrenItalia Bullet train from Venezia to Ravenna;  2.5 hrs. and one connection stop.  I love trains way more than buses

That's fine if you pack light-ish. But keep in mind that you will have to:

-- Get your luggage to the train station and loaded onto train (no porters)

-- Get off train at your change point (usually Ferrara) and get to your next train, again loading your own luggage

-- Get off the train at Ravenna station, which is still 30 minutes to the ship. So you either end up on a shuttle bus anyway from the station to the port (having shuffled your luggage 3 times) or you take a taxi, if one is available...

These are minor things.  I NEVER use porters anyway; we pack light[ 1 suitcase each], and bologna is the xfer point.  Don't have to worry about traffic jams, free to walk about, wifi,  and a lot cheaper

I like the trains too, especially the Frecce but not everyone is aware of the process, which can present some obstacles for those who are not as mobile and who don't pack light.

  • 3 weeks later...

Cruisemom42 and Redwings1958, thank you both for your recommendations. One more question as I finally try to pull this trip together ( and am doing this much later than usual for me): From your experiences, do  either of you have hotel recommendations for Venice in the mid price range? We were there 12 years ago and stayed at the Hilton Molino Stuckey, but this time we have our children and granddaughter (17) traveling  with us and are looking for a moderately priced hotel ($100 to no more than $200) per night. Thanks!

How to get from Venice to Ravenna cruise port with the shuttle (and vice versa)

transfer from ravenna cruise port to venice hotel

Book Your Next Amazing Cruise with Travel Leader, Jeffrey Cleary

One of Royal Caribbean’s most popular cruise embarkation ports in Europe is Ravenna, Italy, and if you’re cruising from the port this summer, here’s how to get there.

In 2021, the city of Venice, Italy banned large cruise ships from entering the Venetian lagoon. This ban came with major implications for the cruise industry, which frequently offered cruises departing from the city to visit ports in the Adriatic Sea and Greek Isles.

Instead of stopping cruises in this region altogether, Royal Caribbean began offering itineraries departing from Ravenna, Italy instead of Venice. Yet while itineraries may still call Ravenna the “Venice” cruise port, the reality is that Venice is located roughly 90 miles away from Ravenna.

The majority of passengers cruising from Ravenna fly into either Venice or Bologna, Italy, and it can be challenging to figure out how to get to the cruise port from these cities.

Related : 30 best European cruise tips

In this guide, we’ve compiled the most up-to-date information on how to get to and from the Ravenna cruise port so you can start your European cruise vacation without any stressful setbacks.

Option #1: Royal Caribbean shuttles from Venice to Ravenna cruise port (and vice versa)

From venice to ravenna cruise port (embarkation day).

The easiest way to reach Ravenna’s cruise port from Venice is by booking a Royal Caribbean shuttle.

Royal Caribbean offers a shuttle service from two locations in Venice. The first is from Marco Polo Airport, and this is the best option for those flying to Venice on the day their cruise begins. As of 2023, the shuttle cost $45 per person.

Note that it takes around 2.5 to 3 hours to reach Ravenna from Venice, so if you are flying to Venice on the same day as your cruise, it’s crucial that your flight arrives before 11 AM. To avoid the risk of missing your ship, it’s recommended that you arrive as early as possible on embarkation morning.

Alternatively, the safer option is to arrive at least a day before your cruise begins.

The second location to catch a shuttle from Venice to Ravenna is from Tronchetto, a parking and bus station in the historical city center of Venice. This option is ideal for those who are spending time in Venice prior to their cruise. As of 2023, this shuttle cost $58 per person.

The shuttle location in Tronchetto is a twenty minute walk from Piazzale Roma in Venice, or you can take a people mover for €1.50 per person.

Shuttles must be booked by calling Royal Caribbean or your travel agent, upon which you can find the most up-to-date schedules for the shuttle buses.

From Ravenna cruise port to Venice (disembarkation day)

Royal Caribbean offers a shuttle service from the pier in Ravenna to Venice’s Marco Polo Airport on disembarkation morning, but only for flights departing after 11:45 AM .

As of 2023, this shuttle was priced at $45 per person, and it takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours to reach Venice’s Marco Polo Airport on the shuttle.

If you are not headed directly to the Venice airport from Ravenna, there is also the option to be dropped off in Tronchetto instead. As of 2023, this shuttle service cost $58 per person, and is a convenient option for those spending time in Venice after their cruise.

Option #2: Take the train from Venice to Ravenna (and vice versa)

In addition to a shuttle bus, another way to get from Venice to the Ravenna cruise port is by train. Taking the train from Venice’s Santa Lucia station to Ravenna’s train station takes a little over three hours and comes with an overall cost of around $40.

The train from Venice to Ravenna is not direct, and it requires a change in either Bologna or Ferrara, Italy. Although having to change trains might seem stressful, you will find train stations easy to navigate and with plenty of signage.

Because the train is not direct, you will not find “Ravenna” listed on the train platform in the Venice train station. Instead, look at your ticket for the correct train number. If you have to make a change in Bologna, you will first board a train to Bologna, not to Ravenna.

Train tickets can be purchased online through Trainline or on the Trainline app. Alternatively, you can book tickets upon arrival to the station, but it’s recommended to book in advance.

Once you arrive at Ravenna’s train station, you can reach the port either by booking a Royal Caribbean shuttle bus or by taxi. The taxi ride should cost around €25 from the train station to the port.

If you would prefer to book a Royal Caribbean shuttle bus from Ravenna’s train station to the cruise port, contact Royal Caribbean or your travel agent for more information.

Royal Caribbean offers shuttle buses from the Ravenna cruise port to Ravenna’s train station on disembarkation morning. It takes twenty minutes to reach the train station, from where you can hop on a train to anywhere in Italy.

These shuttle buses cost $10 per passenger and can be booked at Guest Services once onboard your ship.

Like en route to Ravenna, you will need to make a change in Bologna or Ferrara, Italy to get to Venice. Most transfer times in this direction are around a half hour, which gives plenty of time to make the connection.

Taking the train to Santa Lucia station in Venice drops you off directly in the historic center of the city. Therefore, this option is convenient if you plan on spending time in Venice after the cruise. If you’re simply heading to the airport, one of Royal Caribbean’s shuttles is a better option.

Staying in Ravenna before or after the cruise

One benefit of taking the train as opposed to a shuttle bus is that you have the schedule flexibility to spend time sightseeing in Ravenna. As a small Italian city, Ravenna offers a quaint, walkable city center and is famous for its elaborate mosaics and Byzantine architecture along with its fresh cuisine from Italy’s Emilia Romagna region.

For those interested in exploring a more local side of Italy before or after their cruise, Ravenna is worth a short stay.

Option #3: fly into Bologna instead of Venice

Even though Royal Caribbean refers to Ravenna as the Venice cruise port, there are other major Italian cities within a similar distance to Ravenna, such as Bologna and Florence.

Arguably, in fact, it’s more convenient to fly into and out of Bologna when cruising from Ravenna as opposed to Venice. The city is located just an hour’s drive or direct train journey from Ravenna, making it much easier to reach the cruise port compared to flying into Venice.

The downside with flying into and out of Bologna is that there are no direct flights from the city to the United States, so a connection will be necessary. Venice, on the other hand, offers direct flights to several cities on the east coast along with Chicago.

To get between Bologna and Ravenna’s cruise port, you can book a shuttle through Royal Caribbean or take the train. As of 2023, Royal Caribbean’s shuttle to Bologna’s airport cost $40 per person, and was only available for flights departing after 10:50 AM.

A shuttle was also offered from the cruise port to Bologna’s train station for $30 per person, which is helpful for those taking a train from Bologna to elsewhere in Italy.

Finally, another way to get to Bologna is by taking the $10 shuttle bus from the cruise port to Ravenna’s train station followed by an hour train from Ravenna to Bologna, which costs around $10.
