'Journey 3' And '4' Now In Development; Dwayne Johnson To Return
If you were hoping for more family friendly Dwayne Johnson action movies, today is your lucky day. New Line Cinema has hired writers to do not one, but two sequels in the Journey to the Center of the Earth franchise, each of which will be headlined by Johnson. Chad and Carey Hayes , who co-wrote The Conjuring , have been brought on to write Journey 3 and Journey 4 , sequels to the 2008 film Journey to the Center of the Earth and its 2012 follow-up Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, which isn't the first we've heard of Journey sequels. Director Brad Peyton and screenwriters Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn were previously hired to direct/write Journey 3 with Johnson attached but now the THR reports the Hayes' will "take the project in a different direction than what had been in development before." If things work out, both films will film back to back.
Chad and Carey Hayes are becoming Johnson's guys, which is probably why this change took place. They wrote San Andreas for him as well as a few others things. You have to think if this is becoming another Dwayne Johnson franchise, he's going to want people around him who he trusts. People who know his voice and who he can talk to to drive the story. He's not going to blindly jump into something at this point.
Previously, we'd heard Josh Hutcherson was also planning on coming back for Journey 3 , but that was before The Hunger Games: Catching Fire blew up so huge. You have to think his number went up significantly, and will again after the next two Hunger Games movies. Still, he's kind of the main character so he'd probably have to come back in some capacity.
I haven't seen either of the Journey movies, simply because nothing about them interested me. Families seem to like them though and if making these movies means Johnson can do more risky fare in the future, I'm all for it. But it could also mean the opposite. What do you think?
Why The Rock's Giving Up On Making Journey 3
Between his turns in franchises like G.I. Joe and Fast and Furious (just to name a couple), Dwayne Johnson has earned his Franchise Viagra nickname. That said, not all of his potential projects will ever see the light of day, including a sequel to Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . Some fans have wondered why we haven't seen the third installment in the franchise yet, and Johnson has officially taken to social media to explain that he gave up on it because he couldn't creatively make it work. In response to the question of Journey 3 's status, The Rock posted:
So it seems that there was a plan to make a third Journey at one point in time. The Rock wanted to dive further into Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon to push the franchise into trilogy territory. However, as is often the case with franchises such as this, the project ran into creative issues and ended up getting abandoned somewhere in development hell. Now, Dwayne Johnson has moved on to other projects, including his upcoming Luke Hobbs/Deckard Shaw Fast and Furious spinoff , with no intention of journeying back to Journey .
Of course, if you're a fan who wants to see The Rock adventure through a jungle on a blockbuster adventure, then you can always head to your local theater to check out Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle . The revival of the board game (now video game) adventure series has made a ton of money and has earned a welcoming response from critics . It's not a Journey movie, but based on his post , it seems that it will have to do for the foreseeable future.
That's not to say that the Journey franchise couldn't conceivably continue without The Rock involved in some capacity. After all, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , despite its status as a sequel, was Dwayne Johnson first installment in the franchise -- which saw him take the reins from Brendan Fraser after 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth . Dropping a box office draw as powerful of The Rock doesn't necessarily seem like the smartest business decision, but if he's not coming back, that could be the only way to get another Journey movie made.
Though it might feel somewhat disheartening for fans to learn that a sequel to Journey 2: The Mysterious Island isn't in the cards at this point, we will bring you more information related to all of Dwayne Johnson's upcoming projects as new details are made available to us. When you put Michael Caine on the back of a giant wasp, and get The Rock doing some peck-popping work, you do suspect you’ll get some box office interest. Yet Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , the sequel to the 3D Brendan Fraser vehicle Journey To The Center Of The Earth , was a solid hit back in 2012. In fact, a bigger hit than many were expecting.
So much so, in fact, that the franchise was set to extend by another feature. Director Brad Peyton initially signed up for the third film, having directed the second, and writers Brian and Mark Gunn were hired to pen a script. Dwayne Johnson was expected to return, with Josh Hutcherson, too. But the increasingly busy schedule of Dwayne Johnson seems to have contributed to the death of this project.
And now, to nobody’s surprise, Mr. Johnson has officially crossed a project off his to-do list. The planned third Journey film, the untitled Journey 3 , has now died a death, as he revealed via his Twitter account…
Hey big man, good to see you asked dad’s permission to use his account. Unfortunately, I have no plans to make another Journey movie. My goal to make Jules Verne’s “From the Earth to the Moon” became a real challenge to crack creatively. Thx for being such a cool fan. 🤙🏾👊🏾 https://t.co/9PQeCMBIAR — Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) January 3, 2018
Johnson has worked with the director of Journey 2 , Brad Peyton, on San Andreas and the upcoming Rampage since. The pair were both set to make Journey 3 together, but have found themselves not short of other projects…

The 10 Most Suspenseful Movies Ever, Ranked
Princesses prepare for a fight to the death in ‘fairest of them all’ poster, the john wayne western that made ridley scott want to become a director.
Apparently New Line Cinema is pleased with the team behind the scenes of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island because they’ve decided to keep the same group on board for a potential third installment. If plans for Journey 3 move ahead, director Brad Peyton will carry over, along with writers Brian Gunn, Mark Gunn and Richard Outten , and producers Beau Flynn, Charlotte Huggins and Tripp Vincent. This bodes well for the sequel (which releases on February 10 th ) since we can assume it tested well over the weekend. The film, based on Jules Verne’s “Mysterious Island” follows Sean Anderson ( Josh Hutcherson ) as he searches for his missing grandfather ( Michael Caine ) on an island crawling with dangerous wildlife. Hit the jump for more.
The Wrap reported that though the studio would prefer to reunite cast and crew for a third Journey , it is unclear whether the actors will return or not. Brendan Fraser did not reprise his role from the first movie, Journey to the Center of the Earth , but Hutcherson is back in the lineup. Newcomers to the sequel include Dwayne Johnson as Sean’s new stepfather, who accompanies him to the island. In order to get there, they seek the services of a father/daughter team with access to a helicopter and expert navigational skills, played by Luis Guzman and Vanessa Hudgens.
You can get caught up with all of our previous coverage here . Journey 2: The Mysterious Island hits theaters on February 10 th .
Check out the synopsis below:
In this follow-up to the 2008 worldwide hit “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” the new 3D family adventure “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” begins when young Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson, reprising his role from the first film) receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist. It’s a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes, and more than one astonishing secret. Unable to stop him from going, Sean’s new stepfather, Hank (Dwayne Johnson), joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot (Luis Guzman) and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter (Vanessa Hudgens), they set out to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever.

Todd Phillips ‘Can’t Say Yes or No’ About Joker 3
Five years ago, Todd Phillips’s Joker snuck into Venice and emerged an unexpected winner of the Golden Lion, the first trophy in an awards-season hot streak that eventually saw Joaquin Phoenix hoist the Best Actor Oscar. Now, what do they do for an encore?
As Phillips revealed at the official Venice press conference for Joker: Folie à Deux , that pressure gave the follow-up to the 2019 hit much higher stakes. “It’s a lot easier coming into something as the insurgent as opposed to the incumbent,” Phillips said. “On the first movie, we flew under the radar — or as under the radar as you could be on a movie called Joker . Nobody knew what we were doing. The hard part about doing this is you feel the eyeballs on you.”
Those eyeballs were readily apparent from inside the Palazzo del Casinò. All week, Venice has played host to one big star after another: first Angelina , then Nicole , then Brad and George , then Daniel Craig . In the hour leading up to the Folie à Deux press conference, however, I heard a vocal disturbance outside that I’d never heard before. Was it some kind of protest? Then it hit me: Lady Gaga was entering the building.
Folie à Deux has found a novel way to address the heightened stakes for a Joker sequel: make it a musical, and add one of the biggest pop stars in the world. In the press conference, Gaga needed no introduction. Which was good, because her co-star wasn’t sure what to call her. “Gaga was very …” Phoenix began, before checking her preferred nomenclature. “Stefani,” he corrected, “was like, ‘We’re gonna sing live.’”
Phoenix is the kind of actor’s actor not known for doing sequels. “We had joked about doing one all the time, but if we were really going to do it, it had to scare him the way the first one did,“ Phillips said. The answer came in a dream Phoenix had in which he was singing onstage as the character of Joker. “I called Todd, because I thought there might be something there,” he said. “And … there wasn’t.”
But that grew into the germ of an idea. Some of the character’s most iconic moments had come through dance: writhing in anguish after murdering three strangers, strutting down a staircase after embracing his inner villain. “He has music in him,” Phillips said. What if he sang?
Thus, a Joker musical, in which the man born as Arthur Fleck sings a selection of mid-century standards. “It was all meant to feel like music Arthur might have listened to with his mom when he was younger,” Phillips said. At first, Joker was supposed to perform in the manner of Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. “I started trying to emulate that sound, until I realized: This is not who Arthur is,” Phoenix said. “That was when it clicked for me. We took those standards and decided to do our own interpretation.”
Gaga plays a new incarnation of Harley Quinn, in this telling a Joker superfan. (Six years after “L. Gaga,” her press-conference placard called her by her full stage name.) “For me, it was about unlearning technique,” she said. Her pop-star training went out the window. Now her task, she said, was “forgetting how to breathe and allowing the song to come completely out of the character.”
Ahead of the film’s premiere, rumors swirled that Folie à Deux would function as Phillips’s response to the firestorm of discourse sparked by the original, when multiple critics suggested the film held the potential to incite violence. At the press conference, the director waved off this suggestion. “I do think the last film was painted with an interesting brush,” he said to a questioner who’d called the backlash undeserved. “This movie was not in response to that in any way. Movies are way too hard to make [to function] as a statement in response to something.”
Phillips’s only goal for Folie à Deux , he said, was for it to feel “audacious, like we were swinging for the fences.” Having done so under a considerable spotlight, did he have any plans for how to raise the stakes again for a third Joker film?
“I don’t want to speak for Joaquin, but for me, the story of Arthur/Joker has been told,” Phillips said. “I can’t say yes or no, but it’s not necessarily my goal to stay in this space.”
In other words, with Folie à Deux , Phoenix’s Joker may have finally sung his 11 o’clock number. As they say in theater: Send in the clowns.

For Rapper Lil Tecca, There Was Only Ever a 'Plan A.' His New Album Reflects the Journey

NEW YORK (AP) — There's the story everyone knows about Lil Tecca, and then there is Tyler Sharpe, the rapper-producer with big aspirations and the dedication to see it through. His fourth studio album , appropriately titled “Plan A,” out Friday, isn't a culmination of his career to date — but it does reflect the journey.
“‘Plan A’ summarizes my plan for life,” he told the Associated Press. “It’s never a plan B.”
The popular narrative goes a little something like this: Five years ago, a then-teenage MC from New York released “Ransom,” introducing the world to his singsong-y, AutoTune-inspired flow and hook-heavy melodies. People loved it, and quickly. As of last month, the Recording Industry Association of America has accredited it eight-times platinum.
A hit at the start of a career is usually a sure-fire way to kneecap it, to burn bright and fast, but Lil Tecca managed to avoid the cliche. He has a loyal and fervent fanbase, and he never let the hype overwhelm him. The music was always first. It's why his last album, “Tec,” which arrived almost exactly a year before “Plan A,” was celebrated in hip-hop circles, with tracks like “500 lbs” and an inspired collab with Kodak Black, “Hvn on Earth.”
For this album, Tecca enlisted the producers he’s been working with since day one — like Rio Leyva, Taz Taylor and the like — to evolve the sound he's spent the last few years cultivating. “My most favorite people to collaborate with are producers,” he says. “We mainly create with no expectations."
Their process hasn't changed much from the early days: Tecca picks a beat and freestyles or writes to it. “Sometimes I might just rap on the loop. No beat, no drums, no nothing,” he says. “The only difference is just sharpening the craft.”
There's only one listed feature on the album — Don Toliver on the futuristic trap-rock, “I Can't Let Go.”
“Don Toliver is fire,” he says, simply. “When it came to having the Don song on there, it just felt like the perfect moment, honestly, for what I was trying to achieve in that first half of the project.”
Part of that goal is transparency.
“This one is definitely way more personal. I'm speaking about things I’ve never spoken (about) like my mom and stuff like that,” he says, referring to the smooth throwback, “MAMA.”
“So I kind of just wanted to let people take another step closer to me, on the personal side."
It's found in songs about relationships and miscommunication, too, like the single “Taste.”
Tecca says the many elements that make up “Plan A” manifest in a few different ways, fashion among them. He's been wearing a lot of leopard print lately; it appears on the album cover, the single artwork for “Bad Time,” and elsewhere. “Fashion, specifically, is just another way I express myself,” he says. “I kind of learned it from going to a uniform school. It’s like those Fridays where you get to wear what you want. You feel different... It's definitely another layer to who I am.”
As for future plans — he's got those mapped out. Video games, film, TV, they're all ambitions. “I honestly want to do everything that I’m into, I want to show my version of it,” he says. “So I’m into games. I want to show my version of what like, the best game is. I’m into movies. I want to show my version of what the best movie is.”
“Mentally, I'm definitely already in the next chapter,” he says.
But for now, it's all about “Plan A.” And he hopes new listeners and his dedicated fans will join him for the ride.
“My music isn’t just about me. My music is sort of just the soundtrack to the people that support me in the world that I put my music in,” he concludes. “My No. 1 priority is to inspire the people that actually believe in me.”

10 Most Ridiculous MCU Fights We Still Can’t Believe Happened
Beetlejuice beetlejuice box office joins prestigious top 10 chart in just under 3 weeks, emma stone's divisive black comedy becomes streaming success following disappointing box office.
The Rock's upcoming projects include Fast & Furious 7 and some as-yet unspecified DC superhero movie (we're pretty sure we know what it is ), but he's also got it covered in the family-friendly movie department. No, that doesn't mean another Tooth Fairy movie starring Dwayne Johnson; it does , apparently, mean we'll be getting two new installments in the Journey series, which added Johnson to the mix in the punny titled second installment, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island .
New Line and Walden have had Johnson attached to Journey 3 for some two years now, but this is the first we've heard of Journey 4 also being in the works. THR says the plan, schedule-permitting, is to shoot the third and fourth Journey movie installments back to back, with Josh Hutcherson reprising as Johnson's son-in-law. Screenwriting brothers Chad and Carey Hayes ( The Conjuring ) have reportedly set to work on penning scripts for both adventure films.
The Hayes are fresh off co-writing Johnson's upcoming 3D disaster/action film San Andreas , which was also directed by Journey 2 helmsman Brad Peyton; he is expected to return to call the shots on Journey 3 . Peyton was also once lined up to direct a Lobo movie starring Johnson (before that project was canned), while the Hayes are currently working on the Seal Team 666 adaptation - a supernatural/action flick envisioned as a Johnson vehicle. That is to say, these four (the Hayes, Johnson, and Peyton) have clearly established a solid working relationship.
Rumor has it that Journey 3 may involve a trip into outer space, though it's probably safe to assume that such a storyline will be a tad more light-hearted than something like Gravity . If Journey 3 and 4 are going to be filmed back to back, then it's feasible the former will end on a cliff-hanger that sets up the fourth installment. It could also be that New Line and Walden would prefer to shoot theses movies together for cost efficiency, since they'll be filmed largely on sound stages with green screen backdrops.
Journey 2 grossed just over $335 million worldwide in theaters (against a $79 million budget) and was mostly successful in achieving its goal - offering a wholesome adventure story and colorful pop-out 3D effects for young ones, while Johnson and his adult costars provided some wittier banter for older folk. So yeah, this franchise hasn't exactly had lofty ambitions to date and that presumably won't change with the next two installments; as far as being decent pop art for the whole family to enjoy, though, these next two Journey s ought to get the job done.
We'll keep you updated on the status of both Journey 3 and Journey 3 as more information is made available.
