What is the Golf Dress Code? Here’s What to Wear on the Course

Casey Wade

Are you heading to the golf course for a round with friends? What are you wearing? The golf dress code varies, depending on the club, but it’s much more relaxed than it was less than a hundred years ago.

PGA stars like John Daly introduced the world to a different style on the golf course. Today, people wear all types of colors and garments on the course.

That said, there’s still an acceptable standard of want to wear on the course and around the clubhouse. Some clubs are more stringent and formal with their rules, while others take a more relaxed approach to how they handle dress codes.

What To Wear To A Golf Tournament

Understanding Golf Dress Codes

Read through the membership terms of most golf clubs, and they’ll have some sort of dress code mentioned in the rules. The rule of thumb is that the more prestigious the golf club, the more formal the dress code.

If you haven’t played at a club before, it’s a good idea to call ahead of your tee time and ask them about the dress code requirements. Or, you could search for them on the club’s website under its membership rules.

If you arrive out of dress code, the manager could deny you access to the clubhouse and course due to your violation, and that’s horribly embarrassing. General items to avoid wearing to the club include shorts, jeans, t-shirts, sandals, and flip-flops.

Be respectful of the established rules. If you arrived and didn’t know there was a dress code, just turn around and leave. Making a scene with the manager and staff makes no sense because they won’t let you in.

Jack Nicklaus could rock a bucket hat, as he did at the 1982 Masters in Augusta, Ga.

Casual Golf Dress Code

The dress code at clubs varies, but you’ll find that the coastal clubs in warm areas, like Florida, usually have a more relaxed dress code. Clubs in cooler geographical conditions tend to have a more strict dress code.

When dressing for a casual outing to the course and clubhouse, wearing shorts and a sports shirt is a good choice. It’s a good idea to tuck in your shirt and wear shorts that require a belt. Don’t wear a hat or cap when you’re indoors, as it’s not polite.

The key is to dress to stay comfortable. You want a balance between good quality clothing and style on the golf course. It’s not a fashion show, but ensuring you have the best quality clothing you can afford goes far in setting a good first impression with people you meet.

You don’t need to wear the latest Nike sportswear to look good. There are plenty of affordable clothing brands that make clothing suitable for golf.

Look for garments offering good breathability and moisture-wicking capability. Synthetic materials stay dry and allow air to flow inside the garment, keeping you cool and dry.

Avoid wearing cotton on the course. It’s absorbent and collects moisture, soaking you on hot, humid days. The last thing you need is to arrive at the clubhouse after your round looking like you jumped in the water hazard.

Your shoes should be well-attended and polished or cleaned. Scruffy shoes on the golf course are a sure way to set a bad impression on people. Keep your cleats for the course and sports shoes or boat shoes for the clubhouse.

Don’t wear items like tank tops to the course of the clubhouse. Jeans are also a no-go. You can’t play well in jeans, and they are working-man’s clothes that aren’t suitable for the clubhouse. Avoid wearing cargo shorts and pants on the course as it’s considered tacky.

Clubhouse Dress Code

Most golf courses have change room facilities for members. After your round, you can change into a more comfortable clubhouse attire. Hang out with friends and buy everyone a round at the bar for that hole-in-one on the course this morning.

The clubhouse may have different dress code rules for the course. For instance, some clubhouses may allow shorts on the course but ban them for wear inside the clubhouse. Most clubhouses won’t care what you wear inside, as long as it’s respectful and doesn’t look scruffy.

However, you’ll have to change your footwear. Clubhouses don’t want cleat tracks all over their wooden flooring.

Men’s Golf Dress Code

So, what do men have to wear to look their best on the golf course? Here are the basics of the dress code for men. Each course is different, so check with the management before deciding what to wear.

Male Golfers

Wear a pair of dedicated golf or athletic shoes on the course and around the clubhouse. Avoid wearing shoes with metal cleats as many clubhouses and courses ban them. Think of comfort, but keep the colors neutral. If you arrive in bright-yellow running shoes, don’t expect management to let it slide.

As with shoes, keep your sock color choices neutral and stay away from images, patterns, and slogans on your socks. Ankle-high socks are the best choice. However, some courses allow knee-high socks on the course when you’re wearing shorts.

Some courses and clubhouses may allow players to wear shorts in warmer conditions. However, the shorts must have a beltline and a button-up design. The shorts should not drop below the knee line and should not have a baggy look.

Male Golfer Dressed Smart

You can wear sports golfing trousers or chino pants on the course and around the clubhouse. Avoid wearing cargo pants with pockets on the sides, as most courses and clubhouses ban them. Jeans are also not acceptable.

Golfers should wear golf shirts on the course and around the clubhouse. Button-up shirts are also acceptable. T-shirts are forbidden in most clubhouses and on most courses. The golden rule to remember is that your shirt must have a collar. If it conforms to that rule, then you should be good.

Avoid wearing rugby jerseys and tank tops or t-shirts. Dress in sensible colors and avoid patterns, designs, logos, or slogans that draw attention.

Sweaters are fine to wear when it’s cold. If you must take it off when it gets warm, drape it over your shoulders, and don’t tie it around your waist.

Tuck your collar into your sweater and ensure the sweater has a form-fitting look. Courses won’t allow you to wear baggy sweaters or sweaters with outlandish designs and slogans or colors.

Headwear is another important part of your kit that most golfers can’t do without. A hat helps you keep the sun out of your eyes and assist with better tracking of the ball in the air. Most clubs are fine with wearing peak baseball caps. Just keep the peak to the front of your head.

Make sure there are no outlandish or offensive slogans or images on the cap. You can also wear visors or bucket hats on the course. Most clubhouses don’t allow you to wear a hat indoors.

Why Do Golfers Wear Hats

Sunglasses are a critical part of a golfer’s outfit on hot, sunny days. The sunglasses cut the glare and help you track the ball during your shot. We recommend going for polarized sunglasses from leading sports brands like Oakley.

Women’s Golf Dress Code

Now for the ladies. Here’s what women can wear to the course and the clubhouse. It’s important to note that golf is a conservative sport. So don’t expect them to let you in wearing yoga pants and a sports bra. Here are your wardrobe choices for golf.

Female Golfer

Golf cleats are acceptable on the course, and elegant women’s footwear is permitted around the clubhouse. Many clubs ban metal cleats in golf shoes nowadays.

Standard sports shoes are fine and have all the grip you need to enjoy a round of golf on the course. Footwear like high-heels, sandals, and formal shoes are not permitted on the course.

Short, ankle-high socks are the best option. Avoid wearing bright, colorful patterns. Golf sandals are also an option on warm days.

Skirts and Shorts

If you aren’t wearing pants, you’ll need to wear a skirt or golfing shorts. Some exclusive golf clubs require women to wear their skirts below the knee. Others will require the skirt to not be over-the-top short. Avoid wearing jean shorts, athletic pants, and sun dresses.

Women can wear khaki pants and slacks on the course and around the clubhouse. Women’s golfing trousers are also a good choice.

Women will also need to wear collared shorts around the course and in the clubhouse. However, women can wear V-neck button-up shorts and sports shirts. Women may also get away with wearing short-sleeve shirts when men are only allowed to wear long-sleeves.

Some courses and clubhouses also accept a collarless blouse with sleeves. Women may wear turtlenecks at most clubs and courses but avoid halters, t-shirts, and tank tops.

How To Choose The Right Golf Shoes For You: Complete Guide for Beginners

Jackets and Sweaters

Woken may wear standard sports sweaters on the course and around the clubhouse. You can wear a warm button-down shirt if the weather is cool on the course.

Waterproof and windproof jackets are acceptable. However, avoid denim or fur jackets. Make sure your jacket is lightweight and doesn’t compromise the range of motion in your swing.

A sun hat is acceptable for women to wear. The round, stiff-brim sun hat is popular with the ladies, keeping the sin off your face and the back of your neck.

Peak caps and visors are also acceptable for women to wear on the golf course. However, like men, women will need to always have the cap’s peak facing forward, as per dress code rules.

Sunglasses and Sunblock

Sunglasses are a must-have for men and women golfers. Make sure you buy shades with a polarized coating to cut the glare from shiny surfaces. Sunglasses allow you to focus on the ball in bright light, providing better tracking of your shot in the air.

Don’t forget the sunscreen. Being out on the curse without a hat in the peak sunlight hours of the day can leave you with a nasty sunburn. Protect your face with factor 50 sunblock and use factor 30 for your arms and legs.

Golf Etiquette

Does Your Golf Course Have a Dress Code?

Do you know if your golf course has a dress code for the course and the clubhouse? If you’re a newbie to the game and heading for the course, you need to know if you can dress in shorts or if you need to wear slacks.

If you’re a woman, how do you know if you can play with sleeveless tops or if you need to wear slacks or a skirt? Never make assumptions. Always call ahead and ask the front desk about the dress code if you have concerns.

If you arrive at the course and violate the dress code, you’ll have to go home and change or purchase apparel from the pro shop on-site to bring yourself up to code ( and that’s going to cost a pretty penny).

For instance, just because Tiger Woods wears something on the PGA tour and you see it on TV doesn’t mean it’s acceptable at your local golf course. Always call and ask if you have any doubts.

Tiger Woods Biography

In Closing – What about Using Cellphones?

Most golf clubs have rules surrounding using cell phones on the premises . In the early 2000s, many golf clubs forbid the use of phones on the course or in the clubhouse. However, as the business world and communications grew more reliant on cellphones, many clubs changed their policies on cellphone use.

However, like the dress code, every club is different with its policies. Some may allow cellphone use, while others may forbid it. Once again, call ahead and ask the front desk about their cellphone use policies on the property.

While keeping a phone on your is important for most people, leave it on silent or vibrate when you’re on the course. Be respectful of other people’s time they take to relax and enjoy the game. Never take calls with your four-ball unless all parties in the game clear you to do so. Interrupting the game by taking calls on the course is highly disrespectful.

The majority of golf clubs and courses in the US (and other parts of the world) have dress restrictions to follow. So, if you’re going to play golf with your mates or conduct business with one of your clients on the course, it’s great to know the basic principles of golf dress etiquette that you should never break. Don’t assume that you can dress casually simply because you’re playing on a public course.

This article will explore the golf dress code to help you avoid potential issues!

Golfer leaning on a golf cart on the golf course

First of all, never wear a plain T-shirt like the one you would wear to kick some ball with the guys. The proper choice of tops is crucial when shopping for clothing for golf . Just think about a golf player – what is the image that first pops into your mind? Yes, that’s right, it’s a person wearing a type of polo shirt.

A collared shirt is the most important piece of golf clothing and one which all golf clubs and courses are serious about. If you want to play golf, consider wearing a special polo shirt. Women, on the other hand, are strongly recommended to wear a collared shirt with a modest front opening that does not reveal the midriff.

Women’s long-sleeved golf shirts with a UPF 50+ rating provide excellent coverage and protection from harmful UV rays. These shirts are specifically designed for comfort and performance on the course, allowing for a full range of motion while keeping you cool and protected.

The typical golf shirts are usually a little longer than polo shirts to stay tucked in even after swinging at the ball repeatedly. Avoid patterns that are noisy and splashy. For sun protection, consider opting for Men’s sun-protective golf shirts which are specifically designed to block harmful UV rays. Maintaining a low-key appearance will draw attention to you and your game rather than your attire.

Also, to ensure you stay comfortable, be careful when choosing fabrics. Cotton is always ideal in cooler climates, while a synthetic material will allow sweat to dissipate and keep you dry and cool in warmer and more humid environments.

A golfer preparing to put with two of his friends behind him on the golf course

If you don’t know if jeans are permitted at the place where you’ll be playing, avoid wearing them. That said, a pair of chinos is considered the most appropriate choice. They should be roughly knee-length. And whatever you do, avoid wearing three-quarter shorts which are often not allowed. Drawstring shorts may also be prohibited, but regular slacks with a belt and belt loops are always okay.

When it comes to women, a common option is ladies’ golf skirts or skorts. Culottes and capri pants are also very popular. Some women also prefer to wear special golf dresses with collars, just like polo shirts.

When it comes to design, cream, beige, khaki, gray, and tan are the safest colors for golfing pants, shorts, and skirts. As you rise through the golf ranks and establish yourself as a flashy, snappy dress, you can feel free to advance to white and pink, as well as really bright colors.

You will be mocked if you wear white trousers and your handicap is not less than three. For the time being, be the regular guy and stick to the safe shorts colors.

Woman zipping up her sports jacket with concrete background

If you’re going to play on a cool or even cold day, layer up with a sweater, windbreaker, and/or fleece vest or jacket, as well as a cap and scarf. When the temperature dips below 10 degrees, you can comfortably play wearing long underwear and a warm hat.

While a torrential rainstorm may force you to abandon your plan to golf, a gentle shower won’t be able to drive you from a course if you come prepared. There are jackets and other pieces of clothing for golf made of water-resistant materials to keep you dry while allowing you to breathe and comfortably play. Bottom line: If rain is in the forecast, be prepared for the worst.

Golfer preparing to make a putt on a golf course

If you have golf shoes, they are ideal. Soft spikes, rather than metal spikes, are now required by most clubs. If you use metal spikes while playing at a soft spike facility, you risk being asked to leave.

That said, it’s best to invest in a good pair of soft-spike golf shoes; you’ll be OK at any location. In a pinch, a good pair of sneakers will suffice if you don’t have golf shoes. But wearing street shoes with a heel can leave marks on the grass, which can cause a putt to go off line.

Golf shoes are notoriously difficult to maintain, so invest in a good pair to prevent having to replace them too frequently. Men’s shoes are typically confined to white, black, or brown, but a trendy sock complements the rest of your ensemble. Women’s golf shoes typically come in a wider range of colors.

For those seeking a more in-depth exploration of golf shoes, we recommend checking out our guide to footjoy golf shoes . If you prioritize comfort while navigating the course, our guide to the most comfortable golf shoes for walking is for you.

Accessories

A female golfer wearing a golf glove while holding a golf club's head with two hands

While some players do not use golf gloves , most believe them to be extremely useful. If your hands are sweaty or there’s a light drizzle, a nice glove will come in handy, especially when driving. They also provide some security. When putting and chipping, most golfers remove their gloves.

That said, even though they’re optional, you’ll ultimately use gloves if you play long enough. The goal is to pick the proper size and to keep one thing in mind. Because they are not one-size-fits-all, you must select the appropriate size for your hands.

Golfers who are right-handed use gloves on their left, while left-handed golfers wear gloves on their right. You should only ever wear one, but if you want to look like a complete rookie, you can wear two, one on each side. But don’t do it!

Female golfer talking to someone in a golf driving range wearing sunglasses and a hat

Although not everyone requires or desires sunglasses, many people cannot live without them. Get high-quality sunglasses that will not only relieve strain and protect your eyes but will also provide a clear and accurate picture.

Certain glasses have a tendency to distort angles or distance and should be avoided. Those created with golf in mind will perform better.

If you’re looking to enhance your game with the right eyewear, you might want to explore our guide on prescription glasses for golf . These specialized glasses offer features like UV protection, polarization, and custom fitting to improve your visibility on the course and potentially boost your performance.

A golfer wearing a hat while looking into the distance

Golf is a sport that is nearly entirely played in direct sunlight, so sun protection is essential. Visors and baseball caps are popular among men and women, although straw hats, bucket hats, and beanies (if the weather permits) are also suitable.

For a more in-depth look at the different options and our top picks, check out our guide to top-rated golf hats & snapbacks .

Just leave your cowboy hats and fedoras at home, and remember to take your hat off while entering an enclosed facility. Hats must also be worn forward-facing at all times.

Even with a variety of hat styles available, finding the right fit can be a challenge for golfers with larger heads. If a standard hat leaves you uncomfortable, fear not. Our selection of big & tall golf hats offers a comfortable fit and comes in various styles to suit your taste.

Final Thoughts

And that’s about all you should know about golf apparel. You may even have some of the items already in your wardrobe. Once you’re equipped from head to toe, all you need is to get out on the course and have fun.

In addition to attire, there are other things to consider when choosing a golf course to play that can significantly impact your golfing experience. Let’s explore these essential factors to help you make the best choice for your next round.

Good luck hitting that hole-in-one!

Why Are Golfers Wearing Shorts On The DP World Tour This Week?

The lesser-spotted professional golfer's legs on show along with other wildlife at the Alfred Dunhill Championship

Ernie Els in shorts at the Alfred Dunhill Championship

There are always some incredible sights of various wildlife spotted when watching the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek, but this week golfing fans are being treated to a view of the lesser-spotted golfer’s calves on the DP World Tour.

Hot and steamy conditions at Kruger National Park led the DP World Tour and tournament organisers to make the decision to allow golfers to wear shorts during the competition rounds to make it more comfortable for them.

While we’re now well accustomed to seeing elephants, monkeys and all manner of safari animals going side-by-side with the golf at Leopard Creek – as well as big cats we’ve got the sight of the Big Easy in shorts with Ernie Els opting for them during the tournament.

Professional golfers these days are allowed to wear shorts on practice days, but getting their legs out in tournament rounds is a rare occurrence, although it has happened before at Leopard Creek.

Due to predicted high temperatures expected at this week's #dunhillchamps @LeopardCreekCC, players and rules officials will have the option to wear shorts during the tournament. pic.twitter.com/EKtzPebBln December 8, 2022

The 2019 event became the first on the then-European Tour to allow shorts to be worn during competitive play when temperatures in South Africa were pushing the mercury up at 40 degrees.

Shorts are permitted in the new LIV Golf series, with the more relaxed dress code being one of the ways Greg Norman’s new enterprise say they are improving the game and attracting newer, younger audiences.

Wearing shorts in competition may well be one of the ways the DP World Tour and PGA Tour try and prove they’re moving with the times to counter LIV Golf, but as of now players are still required to wear long trousers during sanctioned events.

The sight of golfers in shorts was not the only big talking point from the first round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship, where Dean Burmester shot a seven-under-par round of 65 take a one-shot lead over Lukas Nemecz.

There was a hole-in-one in the first round as Martin Simonsen managed to make an ace at the short fifth when he holed out from 167 yards.

Thriston Lawrence almost followed Simonsen in when he hit a glorious tee shot on the par-three 16th hole, but the ball just slid by the edge of the hole and failed to drop.

Paul Higham is a sports journalist with over 20 years of experience in covering most major sporting events for both Sky Sports and BBC Sport. He is currently freelance and covers the golf majors on the BBC Sport website.  Highlights over the years include covering that epic Monday finish in the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor and watching Rory McIlroy produce one of the most dominant Major wins at the 2011 US Open at Congressional. He also writes betting previews and still feels strangely proud of backing Danny Willett when he won the Masters in 2016 - Willett also praised his putting stroke during a media event before the Open at Hoylake. Favourite interviews he's conducted have been with McIlroy, Paul McGinley, Thomas Bjorn, Rickie Fowler and the enigma that is Victor Dubuisson. A big fan of watching any golf from any tour, sadly he spends more time writing about golf than playing these days with two young children, and as a big fair weather golfer claims playing in shorts is worth at least five shots. Being from Liverpool he loves the likes of Hoylake, Birkdale and the stretch of tracks along England's Golf Coast, but would say his favourite courses played are Kingsbarns and Portrush.
