The Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu ProTour UAE National Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023 will take place from 7-9 July 2023, at the Mubadala Arena in Abu Dhabi. Organised by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF) in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro (AJP) , the event will bring together hundreds of athletes from various clubs and academies across different divisions, including infants, kids, juniors, teens, youths, amateurs, professionals, and masters.

The three-day championship will showcase the exceptional skills and talents of jiu-jitsu athletes. The first day of the tournament will feature competitions in the infants, kids and junior categories. On the second day, the teen, youth and masters divisions will take centre stage, while the third and final day will witness matches among amateurs and professionals.

His Excellency Youssef Abdullah Al-Batran, Board Member of the UAEJJF, said: “The AJP Tour UAE National Jiu-Jitsu Championship holds a prominent position in the Federation’s agenda and is eagerly anticipated by both fans and athletes. The tournament aligns with the Federation’s plans and vision to identify promising talents in the youth categories, who are the foundation for the sport's future development.

“The championship provides an ideal platform that attracts some of the world's best athletes, particularly those holding purple, brown, and black belts. They are eager to showcase their skills, and it serves as excellent preparation for upcoming international events, including the highly anticipated 15th edition of the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship scheduled for November.”

His Excellency also recognised the influential role of families in motivating their sons and daughters to participate in sports, and encouraged them to take full advantage of the Federation’s plans, programmes and tournaments, which contribute to developing players’ talents and preparing them effectively for professional journey.

Rodrigo Valerio, Operations Director at AJP, said: “The AJP UAE National Jiu-Jitsu Championship is crucial for the players competing in the AJP Tour Rank as it awards 1,000 points to their profile, providing them with a significant opportunity to become the season’s best.

“The second-place holder will receive 800 points, while the third-place holder will be awarded 600 points. This offers a great incentive for more and more athletes to participate in as many events as possible.”

Bernardo Morais, a Brazilian competitor from the Emirates Jiu-Jitsu Club participating in the professional category, said: “The tournament arrives at a crucial phase of the sports season, enabling us to assess our preparations for competing in the most challenging competitions in the final quarter. The UAE National Championship will bring together a cohort of professional athletes, providing us with the opportunity to interact and gain valuable experience in developing our technical and physical prowess.”

Abu dhabi’s ajp tour returns to the u.s. with gi and no-gi orlando international pro events.

Danny O'Donnell

The AJP Tour 2021-2022 season rolls on with the first 2022 event on U.S. soil taking place in Orlando, Florida on April 16th and 17th. The Dover Shores Community Center will play host to the gi and no-gi event that will undoubtedly draw some of the top athletes in the sport from all over North America. These athletes will compete not only for a gold medal, but also for rankings points that will play an important factor in the remainder of the AJP Tour season.

The 2021-2022 season started on November 20, 2021 and will run through November 19, 2022, ending with the prestigious Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship. With the most comprehensive and rewarding ranking system in all of sport jiu-jitsu, the AJP Tour has consistently drawn many of the best jiu-jitsu athletes to its events. Reigning champions include Beatriz Mesquita, Micael Galvao, Pablo Lavaselli, Gabrieli Pessanha, Gutemberg Pereira, and Isaque Bahiense, among others.

AJP Tour events reward points based on the classification of the tournament, ranging from International, National, Continental, and Grand Slam events. Rankings are intended to award the participation and achievements of each athlete, and incentivize them to compete in as many AJP events as possible. The AJP Tour Orlando International Pro is an International event. As such, athletes will earn 600 points for a 1 st place finish, 400 points for 2 nd , and 300 for 3 rd .

Points earned in International events will be accumulated along with points from other events to determine Best of Season champions, Best of Continent champions, and to qualify for Abu Dhabi Grand Slam World Tour events, where athletes are eligible for more ranking points and prize money. These rewards are vital to the professionalism of the sport and have kept athletes competing in these events since they were founded in 2009.

The AJP Tour held two tournaments in North America in 2021 that were part of the 2021-2022 season. These events, both held in Miami, included a Grand Slam in August 2021 and an International Pro in November 2021. The AJP Tour plans to continue to grow and develop in the U.S. and Canada, as the organization is committed to continuing to expand its global reach and grow the sport on a larger scale.

Global expansion of the AJP Tour events and the prizes awarded to athletes have continued to raise the bar for professional jiu-jitsu. Other organizations have followed suit and have implemented bigger financial rewards for their top athletes. The 2021-2022 AJP Tour season is another step towards increased professionalism and in turning Abu Dhabi into the world capital for sport jiu-jitsu.
