6 top luxury alaska cruises for 2024 & beyond.

Book a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to The Great Land on one of these top luxury ships.

Top Luxury Alaska Cruises

Cruising to Alaska on a small luxury ship affords a very different experience than sailing through The Great Land on a larger vessel. On a smaller luxury ship, you'll enjoy the expected perks like fewer passengers and more personalized service – but you'll also physically get closer to the boundless wilderness, abundant wildlife, icy blue glaciers and majestic snow-capped mountains that you've waited a lifetime to see.

While the fares to sail on such vessels are quite a bit higher than those of larger cruise providers, the all-inclusive (or mostly all-inclusive) prices typically include all-suite accommodations with balconies, all meals, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi access, gratuities, welcome bottles of sparkling wine, pillow selection, some shore excursions and butler service. Best of all, you won't feel like you're being nickel-and-dimed while on board. As a special touch, the attentive crew members may even learn your name and memorize your preferred pre-dinner cocktail.

Unlike many mainstream lines, most luxury Alaska cruises do not offer pre- and post-cruise tours to extend your adventure. However, you can plan these experiences on your own through third-party providers.

Alaska Tour & Travel has pre-cruise packages that include visits to Denali National Park & Preserve and the small, quirky Alaska towns of Homer and Talkeetna. You can also see a different side of Alaska via a train ride on the Alaska Railroad, take a national parks tour that includes Kenai Fjords National Park or head northbound to Fairbanks , one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights (if you visit during aurora season, from late August to late April). In addition, the company can plan a self-drive tour from Anchorage to Seward, which includes a stay at a wilderness lodge, helicopter flightseeing over Knik Glacier and guided tours in the parks.

The following luxury cruise lines will ensure you make the most of your voyage in Alaska – one of the most magical destinations on Earth.

Find your perfect cruise

Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises' small luxury ships are designed for adventurers interested in visiting a mix of Alaska's top ports and more rugged, off-the-beaten-track locales. Extended itineraries offer stops in less-visited destinations like the towns of Haines and Wrangell. On board, guests can expect a personalized experience that includes luxurious ocean-view suites with butler service, multiple gourmet dining options, complimentary alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, and attentive service with one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios in the industry.

Base fares for Silversea's 2024 and 2025 Alaska itineraries start at $3,250 per person. If you upgrade to Silversea 's door-to-door fare (which starts at $5,200 per person), you'll receive private chauffeur service from your home to the airport (and back home upon your return) and round-trip flights, with business class upgrades in some destinations.

Silversea also offers immersive pre- and post-cruise land experiences, departing from Seward, Alaska. Highlights include sightseeing flights over Denali National Park & Preserve or into bear country to see Alaska's magnificent grizzly bears. In Vancouver, travelers can take a flightseeing transfer to Victoria to tour the 55-acre Butchart Gardens or board the Rocky Mountaineer for a two-day train ride through the Canadian Rockies.

Silversea's Alaska itineraries extend from May to September, with voyages ranging between seven and 16 days. The line's newest and largest vessel, the 728-passenger Silver Nova , sails its inaugural Alaska season in 2024 along with two smaller ships, Silver Muse (596 guests) and Silver Shadow (392 guests). There are 35 Alaska voyages available in 2024. In 2025, luxury cruisers can hop aboard one of 45 scheduled voyages on either Silver Nova or the 596-guest Silver Moon .

For a seven-day itinerary, consider a sailing from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia. This voyage cruises the Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage and stops in the Alaska towns of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka and Ketchikan. Complimentary excursions in Ketchikan include a tour of Saxman Native Village; a visit to Bonfire Bay Oyster Farm, featuring a sea-to-table oyster tasting; the Alaskan Cultural, Culinary & Lumberjack show; the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafeast and a day as a fisherman aboard the Aleutian Ballard, as seen on Discovery Channel's "The Deadliest Catch." You can also opt for a Selected Shore Excursion (for an additional cost), such as mountain biking or a private fishing trip.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Bed in the Concierge Suite on the Regent Seven Seas Explorer.

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' elegant Seven Seas Explorer sails the line's Alaska itineraries in 2024 and 2025. The lavish 746-guest ship was coined "The Most Luxurious Ship Ever Built" when it debuted in 2016; among its impressive features are the 3,875-square-foot Regent Suite and a high-end collection of art displayed throughout the ship, including works by Pablo Picasso.

Alaska voyages with Regent in 2024 and 2025 start at $4,799 per person. Upgraded 2-for-1 all-inclusive fares (starting at $5,499 per person) cover elegant all-balcony suite accommodations; round-trip airfare (business class on international flights); a one-night pre-cruise hotel package; free two- or three-night land programs; free unlimited shore excursions; free unlimited beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic); complimentary specialty dining; and prepaid gratuities. You'll also receive complimentary airport transfers, unlimited Wi-Fi access and valet laundry service.

Every suite style includes a private balcony, roomy closets and upscale finishes. Concierge Suites (and above) add cozy in-room amenities like cashmere blankets, perfect to bundle up in while you take in the scenery. Meanwhile, Penthouse Suites (and higher) include a private butler who can book excursions, make dinner and spa reservations, unpack your luggage, arrange for a private cocktail soiree in your suite and indulge any other special requests.

Between May and September 2024, Regent sails 22 Alaska voyages. There are 16 Alaska sailings scheduled for the same period in 2025. Itineraries range from seven to 14 nights. For plenty of scenic cruising days, consider a round-trip itinerary from Vancouver departing May 28, 2025. The cruise includes five relaxing days at sea, where you'll enjoy scenic cruising through the Inside Passage (twice), Hubbard Glacier (twice) and Endicott Arm Fjord. Ports of call in Alaska include Wrangell, Juneau , Skagway, Sitka, Seward, Icy Strait (Hoonah) and Ketchikan. You'll also have a full day in Victoria, British Columbia, before returning to Vancouver.

While in Wrangell, consider the Tongass Botanical Forest Walk excursion. Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the U.S., with towering old-growth trees and unique flora, fauna and ecosystems. While in the temperate rainforest with your naturalist guide, look for local wildlife like Sitka black-tailed deer, porcupines and birds of prey. Other complimentary excursions at this stop include a round of golf at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course; a canoe trip through Wrangell harbor and nearby islands, and a heritage tour about Tlingit culture and the history of the town.

Nobu restaurant on a Crystal cruise ship.

Recently relaunched Crystal offers just seven voyages in Alaska aboard Crystal Serenity in July and August 2024. The 740-guest luxury vessel was refurbished in 2023 and features the line's signature top-notch service, elegant interiors and suites, and personal butler service in every room category.

Other perks and amenities include plush bathrobes and Sicily's Ortigia bath products; an impressive passenger-to-crew ratio; prepaid gratuities; complimentary beverages; and outstanding cuisine, including Umi Uma (an exclusive Nobu restaurant at sea, available only on Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony ). Guests can also feast on Italian cuisine at Osteria d'Ovidio; book an exclusive dining experience at The Vintage Room; indulge in Parisian cafe-style fare at The Bistro; opt for American cuisine at Waterside Restaurant or take their pick of several other casual indoor and alfresco options.

Cruisers also have their selection of unique shore experiences curated by Crystal's parent company A&K Travel Group, such as a ride on the world's largest zip line in Hoonah (Icy Strait Point); dog sledding and glacier flightseeing in Skagway; fishing and wilderness dining in Ketchikan and the Wildlife Quest and Fin Island Lodge experience in Sitka, boasting a feast of Alaska king crab and wild salmon.

Crystal offers seven- and eight-night round-trip voyages from Vancouver , as well as one-way cruises from Vancouver or Seward, Alaska. Select itineraries – like the July 30, 2024, voyage from Vancouver to Seward – offer a scenic cruising day in the Seymour Narrows in British Columbia. On this sailing, you'll also enjoy a day at sea cruising Hubbard Glacier, as well as stops in Ketchikan, Sitka, Hoonah (Icy Strait), Skagway and Sitka in Alaska. Or, opt for the July 2, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver for three scenic cruising days in the Inside Passage, Endicott Arm and the Seymour Narrows.

The line's Aug. 13, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver features a special guest: Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio, the executive chairman of A&K Travel Group. As such, the cruise will include an exclusive gala dinner and other unique experiences. Other special voyages welcome marine biologist and National Geographic photographer Flip Nicklin, who will share personal stories from his extensive career and expert insights about humpback whale habitats and behaviors.

Viking Ocean Cruises

The Restaurant on a Viking cruise ship.

Viking Ocean Cruises' 11-day Alaska & the Inside Passage cruise is available on 11 dates during the 2024 season. It sails from Vancouver to Seward (or the reverse) on the 930-passenger Viking Orion . In 2025, the line offers the same itinerary on 22 dates between May and September, split between Viking Orion and its sister ship, the 930-passenger Viking Sea .

Viking's destination-focused itineraries are curated for travelers who are interested in history, science, culture and cuisine, as they feature onboard enrichment like lectures by Viking's resident historians. You'll also find regionally inspired dishes in The Restaurant and special access to unique tours and excursions ashore.

The line's mostly all-inclusive fares cover accommodations in spacious all-veranda staterooms and suites; beer, wine and soft drinks at lunch and dinner; meals at all the dining venues; one shore excursion in every port; free Wi-Fi access; 24-hour specialty teas, coffees and bottled water; complimentary access to The Nordic Spa & Fitness Center; and other upscale amenities.

Voyages traveling northbound from Vancouver include one day of scenic cruising through the Inside Passage before stopping in Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Skagway and Icy Strait Point in Alaska. The eighth day of the cruise sails through picturesque Yakutat Bay, which includes the Hubbard Glacier. The ship then calls on Valdez, Alaska, before the trip ends with two days in Seward.

While in Valdez, take an optional tour to explore the incredible scenery surrounding the small fishing town. Viking offers a kayaking trip to see the Valdez Glacier; a scenic cruise through picturesque Prince William Sound to view the Columbia Glacier; a wildlife cruise where you can look for humpback whales, orcas, porpoises, sea otters and bald eagles; a helicopter ride over the area's rugged, icy wilderness; or a UTV adventure through the Chugach Mountains to Mineral Creek Canyon.

Seabourn Cruise Line

Between May and August 2024, Seabourn Cruise Line will host 20 Alaska voyages aboard the Seabourn Odyssey , before the ship leaves the cruise line in the fall. In 2025, the line offers 27 Alaska sailings on Seabourn Quest. Both yacht-inspired ships accommodate up to 458 guests and feature Seabourn's signature all-inclusive amenities, including luxurious oceanfront suites with verandas; personalized service; complimentary fine wines and premium spirits; complimentary dining; and caviar served throughout the sailing. You'll also have a complimentary W-Fi package and an in-suite minibar stocked with your favorite beverages. Ashore, sign up for exclusive programs like shopping for fresh salmon, halibut and Alaska king crab alongside a Seabourn chef.

Guests booking Seabourn Quest for 2025 will be able to sample the line's new dining concept, Solis. Inspired by destinations in the Mediterranean, the menu features a fresh, modern take on traditional dishes and whimsical cocktails. The restaurant is a collaboration with master chef and culinary partner Anton Egger and senior corporate chef Franck Salein. In addition to dishes like salt-encrusted whole branzino and Tuscan-style steak, guests will also find a wide selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes.

The seven-day Alaska Fjords & Canadian Inside Passage itinerary on May 31, 2024, aboard Seabourn Odyssey, sails from Juneau to Vancouver and includes a day in either Tracy Arm or Endicott Arm, depending on the ice conditions. From there, you can take one of the optional guided excursions: Ventures by Seabourn. These tours are an additional cost but offer opportunities for up-close Zodiac, kayaking or catamaran experiences in the wilderness to see glaciers calving and view local wildlife, such as black bears, mountain goats, seals, wolves and seabirds.

You'll also enjoy many days of scenic cruising on this voyage, and have the opportunity for more optional adventures in Rudyerd Bay (Misty Fjords). The ship makes additional stops in Wrangell, Alaska, and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, before disembarking in Vancouver.

If you want to see stunning Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, then consider booking the seven-day Alaska Inside Passage & Glacier Bay sailing on May 10, 2024, from Vancouver to Juneau. This itinerary also includes the Seymour Narrows and Snow Pass, cruising Queen Island Sound and the Lynn Canal. There's a stop for Ventures by Seabourn activities like kayaking and Zodiac rides in the Inian Islands. The Alaska ports of call on this voyage are Ketchikan, Sitka, Icy Strait Point and Haines. You'll disembark in Juneau.

Bed in cabin on PONANT Le Soléal.

Francois Lefebvre | Courtesy of PONANT

French luxury expedition line PONANT offers 10 Alaska cruises in 2024; itineraries span between seven and 11 nights. Aboard the 264-guest yacht-style Le Soléal, you'll meet up to 10 naturalist experts and guides specializing in geology, history, ornithology or marine or land mammals. Guests can attend onboard lectures and embark on Zodiac landings with the guides.

The ship features elegant staterooms and suites, a library, a spa, a hair salon and a gym. Guests will be treated to movies in the theater, wine tastings and cooking demonstrations throughout the expedition. All fine dining meals, 24-hour room service, an open bar (including an in-room minibar) and complimentary and unlimited Wi-Fi access are covered in the pricing.

Two of PONTANT's eight-night voyages from Vancouver to Sitka are in partnership with Smithsonian Journeys and are curated for English-speaking travelers. Fares for these expeditions include transfers to and from the ship and a shore excursion in each port. On board, you can attend talks and discussions hosted by two Smithsonian Journeys experts: geologist Scott Burns and natural history filmmaker John Grabowska.

On these voyages, there is a sea day after departing Vancouver. You'll cruise through the Johnstone Strait, where you'll have an excellent chance of seeing humpback whales and orcas. After a day spent in the Inside Passage, the ship will call on the village of Metlakatla, Alaska, on the western coast of Annette Island, which is home to the Tsimshians from British Columbia. Other unique Alaska ports of call in this itinerary include the commercial fishing town of Petersburg, the Tlingit village of Kake and the small fishing community of Alfin Cove.

Celebrity provides nothing but a top notch vacation. If you're looking for high-class and luxury, you won't go wrong here!

Suite was the perfect size for 2. Wonderful staff! There are no complaints. Izzy, our butler, the 2 cabin stewards and the Cafe Baccio staff were always most attentive. The reason we cruise was all there. We’ll be back!

This was our first cruise and we chose a Sky Suite (9204) and were extremely happy. The bathroom was just as described. The attention to detail that our Butler, Dino, gave us was beyond my expectations. He led us up to our cabana and handled my tailoring job.

We have taken several cruises in a suite. None of them compared to the treatment of the suite guests on this trip. We felt that we received value for what we paid for. We also liked being able to interact with the officers at any given moment.

If people are wanting to experience a phenomenal cruising experience, then I would highly recommend that they should seriously consider a quality holiday with Celebrity. Everything from the incredible Ships, the absolutely amazing Crew Members, the high standard and wide selection of Food, the outstanding and diverse onboard Entertainment, will truly ensure the most astounding and immersible exciting and memorable holiday!!

One of the most magical ways to explore Alaska’s expansive coastline, stunning snow-capped mountains, mystic fjords, lush rainforests, awe-inspiring glaciers, and protected wildlife is by sea. And that’s precisely why so many people who visit Alaska do so via a cruise. Plus, it’s the best way to experience the iconic Inside Passage, the most popular route for cruise ships departing from Seattle and Vancouver from May through September. The key to planning the perfect adventure is finding the right cruise for your personality, budget, and preferences.

We’ve gathered cruises in all size categories (from a couple of hundred passengers to nearly 5,000), as ship size is often one of the biggest factors when selecting a cruise. We’ve also called attention to cruise options that do an impressive job of showcasing nature, offering local experiences , providing endless onboard entertainment, or catering to foodies or luxury travelers.

While Alaska is certainly the star of this show, the ship you experience it on will make all the difference to your vacation. (Spoiler: Always spring for the oceanview room with a balcony on Alaska cruises, because you’ll be treated to once-in-a-lifetime sights along your entire voyage!)

Final Verdict

Methodology, best overall cruise : windstar cruises.

Because of their small, yacht-like size, Windstar Cruises ships grant unparalleled access to Alaska’s glaciers and fjords; other ships can’t squeeze into some of these special places.

All-inclusive option includes WiFi, unlimited drinks, Signature Expeditions program offers expert guides who give lectures and take guests on intimate excursions

Only 312 passengers

Each cabin is a suite; there are no interior cabins

Ship was reimagined in 2021, with additional dining experiences, a new World Spa, and infinity pool

Fewer entertainment options than on larger ships

When it comes to experiencing the splendor of Alaska, your cruise is only as good as the direct access it offers to this region’s beauty—and Windstar Cruises delivers access like no other. Because of its dainty size, guests are treated to unique experiences, like anchoring right in Misty Fjords and Kenai Fjords, which is something you’d have to do on a shore excursion if you were on a larger ship with another cruise line. For an even closer look at Mother Nature’s impressive work, from icebergs to whales, book a kayak or Zodiac Signature Expedition with their incredibly knowledgeable guides.

In 2021, the Star Breeze went under renovation to provide guests with new features: additional dining options (such as a Spanish small plates restaurant from Anthony Sasso, one of the youngest chefs to be recognized by the Michelin Guide), a spa and fitness center, an infinity pool, and more outdoor deck areas. Chefs make a point of shopping locally in each port and bringing their bounty back to the ship to incorporate into the cuisine, such as reindeer and venison sausage, birch syrup, and, of course, King and Sockeye salmon.

Best Ship Renovation : Celebrity Cruises

The Celebrity Millennium, launched in 2000, has recently undergone complete modernization, which includes luxury staterooms, enhanced technology, and renovated restaurants and lounges.

Immersive dining at Le Petit Chef, where augmented reality intersects with luxury cuisine, private verandas, complimentary fitness classes, plus unlimited access to the Persian Garden and complimentary dining at Blu

Autism-friendly cruising, including sensory-friendly films and toys, and dietary options

Accessible staterooms with grab bars, roll-in showers, and wider doors

2,218 passengers put this squarely in the mid-size ship category

You won’t find the over-the-top party-like activities of larger ships (which could also be a plus)

If you’re passionate about the finer things in life, Celebrity Cruises may very well speak to your soul. The Sky Suite in the Retreat, for instance, includes a long list of curated amenities (e.g., a shore excursion credit, premium drinks, wi-fi, tips, and onboard credit), endless views, a Personal Retreat Host, private dining, and exclusive spaces, like the Retreat Lounge and Sundeck. And onboard experiences range from Macallan and Jack Daniel’s tastings to Riedel crystal workshops that show how different shapes and qualities of a Riedel glass change the taste of wine.

The Millennium offers Edge series staterooms with Infinite Veranda—at the touch of a button, your entire living space becomes the veranda, which means you can walk right out to the water’s edge. And 99% of the staterooms on Celebrity Edge have king-size beds, featuring Celebrity eXhale bedding and Cashmere mattresses.

Best Small Ship : Oceania Cruises

Oceania cruises introduce Alaska to guests by offering local experiences in partnership with native tribes for a more meaningful connection to the area beyond sightseeing.

Two specialty restaurants (no extra charge),  WiFi, and free and unlimited soft drinks replenished daily in refrigerated mini bar

Onboard menus feature local Alaskan delicacies, such as Halibut, King Crab, and Alaskan blueberry pancakes

Impressive guest-to-staff ratio: maximum of 656 guests served by 400+ officers and crew

4 open-seating restaurants, 8 lounges and bars, and a casino

Not all staterooms feature private verandas

Built in 1998 but fully refurbished in 2019, Oceania Cruises’ Regatta dazzles guests with bejeweled chandeliers in the Grand Dining Room, fresh color palettes, and new furnishings in the public spaces, plus new everything in the suites and staterooms. Between the gentle rocking of the ship and the Ultra Tranquility Bed, you’re sure to sleep like a baby.

When you’re not off exploring Alaska’s many wonders, keep busy at the casino, take in an after-dinner production of Tuxedo (a fresh take on the Rat Pack) or Gatsby’s (a 1920s-era musical romp) or chill out and choose a book from the English-style library with 2,000 options.  Book a spa treatment or work out in the Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center, play nine holes of golf on the putting greens, shop the three boutiques, and unwind, help yourself to afternoon tea with all the accouterments at 4 p.m. daily.

Best All-Inclusive Ship : American Queen Voyages

You’ll never feel nickeled and dimed on American Queen Voyages because everything you want—from guided tours to drinks—is already included in the price.

All-inclusive sailing with no extra charge, infinity pool and multiple hot tubs

Menus crafted from local ingredients

Each room comes with binoculars for wildlife spotting

Ship just debuted in November 2021 and its first sailing with American Queen Voyages was May 2022

Hefty price tag

No musical or stage productions onboard

Say hello to our little friend, the 186-passenger Ocean Victory, from American Queen Voyages. While this vessel may be small in stature, she’s big on value. The all-inclusive sailing includes one pre-cruise hotel night, ground transfers, unlimited guided tours, and beverages, open bars and lounges, unlimited food, in-room dining, WiFi, bicycles, walking sticks, and daily live entertainment and enrichment. And speaking of unlimited food, you’ll be treated to five-course dinners along with 180-degree panoramic views. All 98 cabins face out (no inside cabins), and 68 of those feature step-out balconies.

As part of the American Queen Voyages expedition experience, the line has partnered with Dr. Michelle Fournet, an acclaimed acoustic ecologist and leading expert in the communication of North Pacific humpback whales. As such, hydrophones are used onboard Zodiacs to listen to the voices of Alaska’s whales in real-time. Guests will also learn about and participate in whale tracking through fluke identification by uploading their own photos from the vessel to a scientific database following their seasonal movements.

Best Ultra-Luxury : Seabourn Cruises

With its intimate size and maneuverability, world-class dining, social atmosphere, and high-end amenities, Seabourn Cruises is a luxurious way to explore America’s Last Frontier.

Complimentary WiFi for all bookings, The Grill restaurant features a menu curated by famed chef Thomas Keller, complimentary fitness classes

Max guest capacity: 450

229 luxury suites, 90% have verandas and all are ocean front

In-suite amenities include a fruit basket replenished daily, a bar with complimentary wines or spirits, nightly turndown service, and Molton Brown bath products

Tipping is neither required nor expected

Ship was built in 2009 and has had no renovations

Eleven days exploring the Inside Passage and Alaskan fjords with only 400-ish other passengers aboard a luxurious ship with plenty of onboard activities? That’s exactly what you’ll get on the Seabourn Odyssey. Enjoy the magical moments spent exploring the far end of the Misty Fjords on Zodiac, learn more about the local wildlife and geology during lectures with the Expedition Team, and kayak along Hubbard Glacier.

There’s plenty to do on board, too, including making use of the two swimming pools, five whirlpools, and Dr. Andrew Weil's spa and wellness program. Not to mention a card room, casino, library, observation bar, and beauty salon. There are several options for onboard dining (aside from complimentary in-suite dining), including a fine dining option, The Grill by world-renowned chef Thomas Keller, and an open-kitchen style option for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Best Traditional Cruise : Holland America Line

Holland America Line’s Koningsdam offers everything long-time cruisers appreciate, from a comfortable size and price point to onboard activities and numerous dining options.

Live cooking demonstrations and fine dining events, Rolling Stone Rock Room live music venue and B.B. King’s Blues Club

Recently refurbished in 2018

2,650 guests, which makes it a mid-size ship that’s easier to navigate

Club HAL for kids ages 3 to 17 included

No live daytime music

Don’t have a lot of time for your Alaskan vacation? This “best of” 7-night itinerary is focused on the region’s iconic Inside Passage, which gives passengers an efficient taste of all the area’s most photographed and talked about sights. Plus, Holland America offers more access to Glacier Bay National Park and has more departures featuring Glacier Bay National Park than any other cruise line.

The Koningsdam boasts 912 balconied accommodations, which means 69% of the ship has rooms with a private veranda view. You’ll also find massage showerheads, magnifying mirrors, terry bathrobes, Egyptian cotton towels, Elemis luxury bath products, and fresh fruit (upon request) in your stateroom. Anglers will enjoy the cruise line’s Savor My Catch program, which brings ocean-to-table dining to a whole new level. Plus, guests can catch their own fish during shore excursions and have it prepared and served on board.

Best New Ship : Princess Cruises

Princess has been sailing Alaska for over 50 years, and with six ships, five wilderness lodges, and its own domed rail car, this cruise line knows the region well.

Cook My Catch dining program for guests on select fishing excursions, puppies in the Piazza brings sled dog puppies onboard for guests to cuddle, adults-only wellness and relaxation deck

Ship just launched in March 2022

Princess ships feature Ocean Medallion wearable technology for a seamless, contact-free cruise experience

One of the most affordable Alaskan cruise options

Gratuities and specialty restaurants not included

The Discovery Princess had her naming ceremony in April of 2022, so she’s a brand-new addition to the line’s fleet. As such, technology is a big part of the experience. Cruise guests will receive a free Medallion device with a complimentary lanyard, which allows you to do things like open your cabin door, track onboard purchases, find family and friends, locate venues, and check daily activities.

You’ll find three main dining rooms, plus a pizzeria, gastropub, Italian restaurant, chop house, and Mediterranean bistro. Or, kick things up a notch with a Chef’s Table Lumiere experience of multiple courses with wine pairings. Spend your time listening to live music in the Crooners Bar, exploring cocktails from around the world at Good Spirits, and relaxing at the jazz club. Be sure to check out SeaWalk, a walkway that cantilevers off the side of the ship and has a glass bottom so guests can see below and above.

Best Large Ship Cruise : Royal Caribbean International

Dry docked in 2021 for a routine refurbishment, this Quantum Class ship holds 4,905 passengers and truly offers something for everyone.

Recreational activities like a flowrider surf simulator, iFly skydiving simulator, and rock climbing wall, high-tech virtual balcony views, and North Star, a glass observation capsule that rises 300 feet above sea level for bird’s eye views (additional cost)

Luxury shopping options, such as Cartier, Kate Spade, and Michael Kors

Adventure Ocean Kids Programs

A robot will code your favorite cocktails at the Bionic Bar

Formal nights with dress code (or you can choose to dine at a more casual venue those evenings)

The best part about a mega-ship, like the Ovation of the Seas? It’s literally impossible to be bored given the number of things there are to do, eat, and explore. For instance, there are 16 dining options (including Jamie’s Italian by chef Jamie Oliver), 10 bars and lounges, myriad activities and shows, a spa and fitness center, pool tables, and table tennis. Add to that guest lectures, outdoor movie nights, live music, an arcade and casino, theme nights, bumper cars, archery, and dance and sushi-making classes. Heck, you might just need a vacation after this vacation!

Interior staterooms are budget-friendly options with plenty of space and thoughtful touches, or you can upgrade to ocean view, balcony, or suite categories for some extra perks (like marble bathrooms with a tub and two sinks). And there’s no better spot for taking in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier than the North Star observation deck.

Your Alaskan cruise is ready to set sail, so which ship will you choose for your adventure through the Last Frontier? For a small ship experience with an all-inclusive mentality, we love Windstar Cruises—it’s your best bet for getting up-close and personal with nature and having access to expert guides. For sailing through Alaska in the lap of luxury, choose Seabourn Cruises, and surround yourself with naturalist experts and fine dining restaurants. And if mega-ships are intriguing, Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas has literally everything you could ever want in a floating hotel. (The only risk here is that you might enjoy the ship’s myriad amenities so much that you’ll forget to check out Alaska.)

We evaluated over a dozen Alaskan cruises before selecting the best in each category. We considered various elements like the cruise line’s reputation and quality of service, ship design and architecture, and notable ship amenities (e.g., swimming pools, entertainment, technology, access to nature experts, etc.). We also reviewed each ship’s cruise itinerary , dining and wellness options, and the types of experiences and excursions available to guests. In determining this list, we evaluated numerous customer reviews and considered whether the cruise line has collected any accolades in recent years.

How To Choose A Cabin For An Alaska Cruise

One of the best ways to see Alaska and its tidewater glaciers is by cruise ship. After planning and picking a cruise line comes the decision to decide on a stateroom. So, how do you choose a cabin for your Alaska cruise?

Do cabin type and placement make a difference? Choosing the right stateroom for you is more challenging than other cruise destinations. Also, your priorities may be different than others.

So, let’s compare the cabins types and why you may lean toward one more than another.

Forward cabins on a cruise ship

Living in Vancouver, Canada, allows me to sail to Alaska without flying anywhere. I can literally drive to the cruise terminal and be there within the hour.

Having sailed to Alaska nine times, I’ve become a master packer, know which excursions to book, and understand how to pick the right stateroom.

I have stayed in an inside, outside, and balcony cabin for different reasons in my sailings.

Balcony Vs Non-Balcony?

Some Alaskan-bound adventurers believe not having a balcony stateroom is a mistake . Although, others might view it as silly because the weather isn’t warm like the Caribbean.

During a cruise, passengers use balcony rooms to read a book, enjoy the sun without the crowds, have coffee in the morning, or wine at night. While the Alaska weather might differ from the Caribbean or the Mediterranean, balcony staterooms still have considerable benefits.

Unlike other cruising areas, much of the majestic Alaska scenery is viewable from your cruise ship. If you select an inside passage cruise, your vessel will travel within sight of land for most of the journey.

So, having a balcony means enjoying a private space and avoiding the crowds on the open decks. Also, balconies provide protection from the rain, and since you’re in a rainforest, you can expect rain in Alaska.

Cruise ship balcony

Balconies allow for wildlife spotting within arms reach of my stateroom, and you won’t have to carry around a camera bag to capture those moments. Since humpback whales and bald eagles are prevalent in Alaska, you can see them from your room.

With a balcony, you can set up your camera with a tripod and be ready for those amazing shots when they represent themselves. It also allows you to do time-lapse photography of your journey.

When cruising by a glacier, there is no need to worry about which side of the ship is best. In Glacier Bay National Park and Hubbard Glacier, the captain will turn the vessel to give equal viewing to both sides.

Since the decks get very crowded, especially at the bow, you’ll enjoy a better view from your private balcony. If you get cold, you can step inside to warm up before resuming your viewing outside.

The spacious cabin size may be one of the biggest bonuses of having a veranda. Inside staterooms may be as small as 140 sq. feet, whereas verandas could be as spacious as 200 sq. feet.

If you’re cruising at the tail end of the Alaska cruise season, you’ll have a chance to see the northern lights. Having a balcony stateroom lets you check the aurora borealis off your bucket list.

Studio ocean view balcony stateroom

Solo travelers often book an inside room due to the single supplement. However, Royal Caribbean’s Ovation and Quantum of the Seas have solo balcony cabins.

While not as large as a regular balcony stateroom, you’ll still have the same size bathroom and an outside deck.

Interior Cabins For An Alaska Cruise?

If you’re cruising to Alaska on a strict budget or like complete darkness to sleep, choosing an interior room is a good idea. I was on a tight budget on my first cruise to Alaska. While I could afford the veranda stateroom, I chose to take an inside instead.

Celebrity Solstice inside cabin

I used the money I saved to splurge on an expensive dog sledding tour on Herbert Glacier. Looking back, was it the right decision? Absolutely, because the dog sledding excursion was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will cherish forever.

If you’re traveling alone and on a tight budget, deciding on a  cruise line for Alaska  is a tough decision. You should look for cruise ships with solo cabins.

The Norwegian Bliss and Encore, Royal Caribbean Ovation, and Quantum of the Seas have solo staterooms. Norwegian’s solo cabin gives access to a solo lounge and a chance to mingle with other guests.

Choosing a single cabin prevents you from paying the pesky single supplement price. Although, inside cabins are popular with solo cruisers due to the cruise fares being lower even with the single supplement.

Consider an inside with a virtual balcony on RCI’s Quantum-class ships if the solo staterooms are sold out. The floor-to-ceiling screen live-streams the views outside, allowing you to feel like you have a balcony without paying the price.

An interior virtual balcony stateroom

The Alaska season is short, from May to September, and during the summer solstice, the sun sets very late and rises ridiculously early.

Some areas experience 20-plus hours of daylight. If you’re sensitive to sunlight, a balcony or outside stateroom might not be suitable.

Should you choose an inside cabin, these are usually the smallest on the ship. Consequently, some cabins don’t have room for a couch, maybe just a tiny desk and chair.

Organization and storage are essential. Pack an over-the-door organizer to store small items, strong magnetic hooks to hang things on the walls and utilize packing cubes .

Outside Cabin For An Alaska Cruise?

An ocean view cabin is a good choice if you dislike the complete darkness of an inside room but want to avoid paying for a balcony.

Spacious ocean view cruise ship cabin

Outside cabins are generally larger than inside staterooms which helps with storage. While you cannot open your window for fresh air, you will benefit from having natural daylight.

Is there a big difference between an outside and an inside cabin? Not really; only the price! If you sail in an interior cabin and prefer to see daylight, leave your television on and set it to the outside cam. That way, you can see if the sun is up in the morning.

When booking an outside cabin, check what’s above and below. Since most of these are on the lower levels, they could be below busy areas, such as the casino, bars, and lounges.

Which Side Of Cruise Ship Is Best For Alaska?

Some Alaska cruises sail  round-trip from Vancouver  and Seattle, while others cruise one way. If you selected a round-trip Alaskan cruise, it doesn’t matter which side of the ship your cabin is.

However, what’s the best side of the ship on one-way cruises? You want to look at which way you are sailing.

If you are cruising north, selecting a starboard (or right-side) stateroom is best since the land is on that side. When sailing south through the Gulf of Alaska, choose a port side (left side) stateroom.

Being on the land side will often give you the first glimpse of Alaskan towns as your vessel pulls into cruise ports. If you’re wanting a cabin with views, select an unobstructed one. However, obstructed cabins can save you money, still provide fresh air, but you can see the lifeboats.

Obstructed balcony

Of course, this only counts for staterooms with windows or balconies. If you book late and don’t receive the cabin of your choice, do not worry. Part of your journey sails the inside passage, and there is plenty to see on both sides.

Pool Deck Or Higher

I once sailed back-to-back to Alaska and took a guaranteed stateroom. The cabin given to me was at the front of the cruise ship on the pool deck. While this was great when the sun was shining, it was not a good location during lousy weather.

When leaving my cabin, I had to exit the inside hallway and walk across the open deck to get to the buffet. During bad weather, I’d get soaking wet. Alternatively, I’d have to walk downstairs, through the hallway, and back up again.

Having a door to the outside also made the short hallway cold due to the number of times guests opened the door. This was a good lesson for me that a higher cabin isn’t always the best for an Alaska cruise, even though they come at a higher price.

Higher decks aren’t ideal for those who suffer from motion sickness. Cabins at the bow or aft of the ship experience the most motion, so you’ll want to avoid these areas if you’re sensitive to movement.

Forward Vs Aft Stateroom

aft stateroom balcony

There are a large number of long-time cruisers who love the aft cruise ship staterooms. Why? Because the aft cruise ship cabins have oversized balconies, some that wrap around the ship’s side.

There is something to be said for the calming feeling of watching the wake from the back of a cruise ship. Plus, having an aft balcony on an Alaska cruise provides premium glacier viewing, especially with a wrap-around balcony.

However, if you’re sensitive to motion or vibrations, consider choosing something mid-ship instead. Also, passengers can occasionally smell the exhaust from the ship’s funnels on their aft balconies.

While this is not true for all cruise ships, some have a sloping aft. As a result, people on the higher decks can see down into the lower deck balconies. If privacy concerns you, reconsider an aft stateroom.

A forward cabin for an Alaska cruise gives the first views of where you are sailing. This is especially nice when leaving or arriving at a port. While both the forward and aft cabins can feel a higher degree of motion in rough seas, the forward provides less movement.

A large aft deck on a cruise ship

It’s important to know that some cruise lines lock off the balconies on forward suites during cruising. Locking the balcony doors prevents injury from high winds and bad weather.

Cruise Ship Suites

For the elite or passengers with non-existing budgets, there are the mini-suites and, of course, the suites. Some of the best cruise ship suites are comparable to condominiums with their own hot tubs.

If you’re cruising with luxury lines like Seabourn, Silversea, or Regent, all cabins onboard are in the suite category. While you’ll enjoy larger staterooms, some suites offer ship-within-a-ship perks.

Celebrity Millennium Penthouse entertainment sized deck

On Celebrity Cruises, you’ll have access to Blu or Luminae Restaurants and the Retreat. Throughout the cruise, having the Retreat provides space to watch glacial calving and enjoy the refreshing outdoors with fewer guests.

Guests in Norwegian’s Haven get access to an exclusive area, including a premium viewing spot in Glacier Bay. Here, you’ll enjoy the best views with fewer people.

Guests in the Grill suites on Cunard have an exclusive dining venue, a lounge and several premium outdoor spaces.

Cunard Queen Elizabeth The Grill suite outdoor space

If you select an expedition-type vessel operated by Hurtigruten, Lindblad (National Geographic), or Uncruise, you could have fewer choices when it comes to cabins. The National Geographic Sea Lion and Sea Bird only have ocean view cabins.

However, these small ship cruises offer a contrasting experience to traditional cruise lines, and their itineraries are focused on the destiny, not the mode of transport.

While lines like Holland America and Princess Cruises port in Skagway, Sitka, Juneau, and Ketchikan, an expeditionary cruise provides smaller, hidden gems. They may stop in Wrangell, Petersburg, Cordova, Katmai National Park, and Kodiak, to name a few.

Looking for the best Alaska cruise? Find it on Cruise Critic . It features more than 650,000 cruise reviews, advice and information from the team of cruise experts on everything you need to know. The site also offers itinerary and pricing information, deals and money-saving tips.

Final Thoughts

Some guests go with a guaranteed stateroom if they focus on the destination rather than the place they sleep. It allows them to save money, to use on shore excursions instead.

One word of caution; if you’re sensitive to noise, the cruise ship cabins to avoid are ones next to the elevators, over or under a nightclub, or anywhere that isn’t quiet.

If you opt to play the RoyalUp or other lines bid to upgrade program, you could be assigned a cabin in an undesirable location.

Ultimately, each person has different criteria when choosing a cabin for an Alaska cruise. Sometimes, it comes down to budget, and whatever cruise ship stateroom you choose, it will be a memorable Alaskan adventure.

Four different types of cabins on an Alaska cruise

are there cabins with 2 single beds

Forever Karen

Unless it's a solo cabin, all staterooms have beds that can be converted to two singles.

Wednesday 1st of March 2023

Karen we are planning on booking Holland America to Alaska on your recommendation for our first ever cruise. While booking a room would you recommend the top deck 10 for the best views and some peace and quiet or lower? and would you select May or mid June 2023 ? and what side of the ship should we pick if we are round trip Any other tips is appreciated

If you could to prone to motion sickness, choose a cabin mid-ship and lower down. Make sure there are staterooms above and below for peace and quiet. The side of the ship doesn't matter when sailing roundtrip. May to mid-June is a great time to sail. May will be cheaper and see fewer crowds in port, but it will be cooler.

Sailing in Alaska late April - May in 2023. I'm hoping to see the Northern Lights. I know the better chance is during the winter, but can't sail there that time of year. I was there on a cruise way back in 1991 in August. Rainy and dreary every day. Fingers crossed for drier weather in the spring. Great article. Thank you!

There's always a chance to see the northern light no matter when you sail. But, it's a matter of luck. In six sailings, I haven't seen them yet.

we are trying to choose between Seaborn and Regent seven seas. Which one would be better. It is our fisrt time to Alaska and We'll do land portion by ourselves. we are 4 adults

Sangeeta, When looking for an Alaska cruise, I tend to look at the itineraries, not the cruise line. Since you mentioned you plan to do the land portion yourself, Seabourn 7-day cruises end in Juneau, and Juneau is landlocked (you can only get in and out by boat and plane). Regent ends or starts in Seward (Anchorage), so you'll have access to Denali National Park.

Our first cruise is this May and our room is right across from the laundry room. I’m very light sleeper, should we consider another room?

Sunday 22nd of January 2023

Janis, being across the hallway from the laundry room should be fine because you're not sharing a wall. Most people are considerate and will do laundry during the daytime, usually on sea days.

SUITE CLASS WORTH IT ON ALASKA CRUISE?

I searched but cannot find anything on this topic that I need.  If you find a thread that has covered this already, please let me know.

My husband and I are planning our first cruise to Alaska, looking at Sept. 2021.  We have some credit left from our cruise that was cancelled this April.  My question relates to the type of cabin.  We have booked suites (GS and CL) in the past and love the suite perks.  We are looking at a suite for Alaskan cruise (GS or Owner's).

Some of the perks (reserved seating at pool, etc) won't really be used on an Alaskan cruise.  For those who have cruised in a suite to Alaska, did you feel it was worth it?  The balcony for GS and Owner's suite are quite large and feel it would afford some incredible views.  We do spend a lot of time on our balcony.  We don't drink so we tend to take that money and book suites.

So I'm just wondering on Alaska vs. Caribbean, are the suite perks still worth it?

Thanks for all of your help.

I have to first say that our best vacation EVER was Alaska in a suite. But I need to admit that it was on the Norwegian ship in a Haven suite, so the benefits were somewhat different (in the Haven we had a private deck at the top of the ship only for Haven guests and that was unbelievable).  Regardless, you must have a balcony of some kind, it would be a complete waste if not - AK cruises are like a photography book every day and almost every mile. Like you, we enjoy sailing in suites and so needless to say we find it worth the money most of the time. And I personally recommend the smaller ships as there are places they can venture that are so special that aren’t accessible to the larger ships on Alaska cruises. I hope that helps at least a little bit.

Thanks, AlohaLivin.  During the time we can go, RCC does not have any smaller ships in Alaska.  We will definitely do a balcony (doesn't seem to be a point if you don't!!)  Your response does help and I know the Haven is similar to RCC suites only areas.

Radiance and Seranade of the Seas are in Alaska in September 2021...............and if you aren't stuck on Royal Caribbean, check out the 10 day itinerary on Sapphire Princess on September 15, 2021 , itinerary can't be beat, awesome ports and 2 glaciers days..........

We move between RCL and NCL (the latter strictly because of the Haven, we like that niche that we think of as being in the sweet spot between the area of suites and star suites on RCL). For us, the small ship size is just amazing for Alaska - it is the little details, like how close you are to the water when the eagles circle instead of the seagulls. I am sorry to hear there are no smaller ships headed that way via RCL, but as @Jimbo  mentioned there are so many options. I hope you find one that will be as memorable as our first Alaska cruise.

Not from Seattle.   Sorry I didn't specify my origination port.  And I am going with RCC because of future cruise credit which must be used.

Gamecock, here is a link to my live review from a few summers ago on Radiance of the Seas. We sailed southbound after doing a land tour in Alaska. I booked the Royal Suite and it was great space for the four of us.  We used the balcony a great amount as the weather was spectacular.

Now for the suite perks aspect. We almost sail exclusively on Oasis Class ships so the suite perks on Radiance were a huge difference for us. No Costal Kitchen, if there was priority seating at the pool I didn’t notice it, but the breakfast in Chops was great.  We went to the SL once but at the end of every day we were so exhausted we just flaked out. We only went one night to a show. YMMV, the room size and balcony was the biggest “perk” and the rest was nice.

As for the review, there are videos imbedded in it but after CC changed their format they are no longer a direct link.  After the switch this is what the link look like in the red circle. Copy and paste it into Internet Explorer or Safari and it will come up. If you paste it into YouTube it isn’t always the first video to come up.

Here is a link to that video to get you in the mood for Alaska. We have been three times and it is spectacular.  I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Thanks, A&L.  I appreciate the information.   The helicopter ride is stunning!

My husband has done multiple Caribbean cruises with me so it's his turn for Alaska.   I don't like the cold weather but he deserves this.

I would say yes!  You will have access to the suite lounge which is great, lumina the suite restaurant and lots of "priority" options.  Also, the suite, even entry level sky suite, is much more comfortable as you have space to put things away and when you walk- you don't bump into each other.

Enjoy your cruise.

Haha

we had an aft GS booked for this year...*sigh*.....

we always book suites, regardless of ship or  itinerary.  we like the lounge access, breakfast in a specialty and a few other minor perks.

For Alaska the most important is to have a cabin that enables you to have great views of the scenery. In addition the excursions are also something to consider, especially helicopter / plane ones which are quite expensive. Hence, I would set the priorities on these elements personally, and if budget allows for a suite then to go for it, otherwise to use the money more for the excursions.

It's really a personal thing, hence also if someone plans to spend more time on the ship than to go on excursions etc, then it also might be more worth it to go gor a Suite.

What is lumina?  I've never seen that one on a Royal ship.

If you are looking at Quantum class from Seattle then like Oasis class there are some benefits of the Royal Suite Class.

When sailing on Ovation to Alaska I frequently visited the Suite Sun Deck which was often not very busy and offers a great way to move quickly from starboard to port and back again.  Hundreds of my pictures and videos were taken from the Suite Sun Deck.

Coastal Kitchen is also a significant benefit on Quantum class and so is the Concierge Lounge on this class of ship due to the aft views and floor to ceiling glass windows.  Even if the nightly happy hour doesn't have direct appeal, the views all day long make the CL very appealing.  It is however a long walk back to the CL so if you have mobility issues keep that in mind.  Personally I don't mind the walk.

While Voom will always be slower in Alaska compared to the Caribbean at least it's included in Sky Class on Quantum class.

On Royal's other Alaska based ships, Radiance and Serenade, the benefits of GS or above don't do very much for me regardless the region they sail.  Oasis and Quantum class have Royal Suite Class so the benefits for GS and above do stand out and have some merit.

It's a Celebrity thing.  Technically it's Luminae.

Alaska is our favorite cruise destination and we sail yearly (well.... not this year).

And... Alaska is one of the most expensive cruise markets. While we travel in suites a lot, we make a conscious decision the "rough it" on Alaskan cruises and book a regular balcony. We spend hours each day on our balcony watching the sea life (whales, seals, dolphin). And then full days in ports. Not much time to enjoy the comforts of a suite.

23 minutes ago, twangster said:   It's a Celebrity thing.  Technically it's Luminae.

Ah, thanks.  Thought I had missed something!!

We had a Grand Loft book on Ovation in Sept. but it went bye bye.  We like the suites for the perkes that are available.  Actually we like the genie suites.  We were looking forward to seeing some of Alaska from the North Star and I know we would have been able to get on it more than most people.  Also SC offers internet which is important to us as I home school my granddaughter.  You need a balcony for Alaska and the suites seem to have the biggest ones.  Unfortunately Alaska is not happening this year.  I did however, look a little ahead and thinking this might happen I started looking at next year and found the Royal Suite on Quantum for less than we paid for the Grand Suite on Ovation.  So this year is a bummer but next year should be a fun family vacation.

1 hour ago, lovelife said: What is lumina?  I've never seen that one on a Royal ship.

Getting the names of the suite restaurant mixed up with Celebrity. Quarantined brain!  lol.  But my comment refers to the RC suite restaurant also.  IMO the more room in your suite-the better!  We usually book a Crown loft on those ships that have them.  If not, an owners suite on our Royal sailings.

8 minutes ago, Cruise a holic said: Getting the names of the suite restaurant mixed up with Celebrity. Quarantined brain!  lol.    But my comment refers to the RC suite restaurant also.

No prob.  Yes, Coastal Kitchen is great for all three meals.

I don't think that where the cruise sails really affects the question of is a suite "worth it".  If you're looking to book a suite you've already decided you are willing to pay the suite premium.  Alaska is no different.  You'll even find folks using the pool.

Thanks, everyone, for your input.  This has helped me with my suite question.  I'm not concerned about the money for shore excursions vs. booking a suite because I have an RCC credit card so I always build up about $1k in OBC and I use this to purchase excursions.  While I know that Alaska shore excursions are more expensive, this will help a great deal.

Happy cruising everyone!  And, again, thanks for all the valuable input.

$1000 = 1 shore excursion.....

1. Celebrity Solstice Is Popular with Couples and Families in Alaska

Celebrity Solstice (Photo: Celebrity)

Celebrity Solstice has one of the best interior architecture designs at sea, and passenger flow is excellent. While the ship's passenger-to-space ratio is standard for the industry, the ship never feels crowded. Celebrity is known for its fabulous dining options and bars, but perhaps the unique feature of Celebrity’s Solstice class ships is the Lawn Club.

This full half-acre of real grass on the top deck offers some of the best views onboard in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. The space includes a hands-on glass blowing studio, games like bocce and mini-golf, lounge chairs and even rentable Alcoves. Celebrity typically attracts sophisticated young adults and middle-aged couples, though you'll notice more families during the summer sailings in Alaska.

Celebrity Solstice Offers Popular Alaska Itineraries with Abundant Dining and Cabin Choices

Solstice sails from Vancouver , calling on Juneau , Ketchikan , Skagway , Endicott Arm (Dawes Glacier), Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage (scenic cruising).

Dining highlights on Celebrity Solstice include stunning views from the rear-facing Tuscan Grille Italian specialty restaurant. Multiple complementary venues are available for all guests, including snacks at Café al Bacio, gourmet dogs and burgers at the Mast Grille and all-you-can-slurp ice cream in Oceanview Café. The ship also has exclusive dining rooms Blu for Aqua-class guests and Luminae for suite guests.

Sleeping on Celebrity Solstice includes plenty of cabins designed for families cruising Alaska. For those looking to step up a notch in amenities and services, specialty cabin categories like Concierge Class and spa-centric Aqua Class fill the bill. And let’s not forget an abundance of rear-facing Sunset Verandahs -- a huge bonus for scenery watching in Alaska.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Celebrity Solstice include naturalists onboard for high-interest areas. Local performers bring Alaskan culture aboard. The ship offers blankets and hot chocolate for nature viewing -- or up your hot beverage game with crafted cocktails. Evening entertainment options keep up the pace with singing, dancing and aerial acrobatics.

2. Norwegian Encore Visits the Most Popular Cruise Spot in Alaska

Norwegian Encore in Icy Strait Point. (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Norwegian Encore operates seven-night round-trip itineraries from Seattle that include time in Glacier Bay National Park with a park ranger onboard the ship. It’s reason enough to consider this ship.

The 4,000-passenger Encore boasts a handful of the features found on its sisters in the Norwegian fleet , including Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Sun , Norwegian Jewel and Norwegian Spirit , some of which also rotate through Alaskan itineraries some years. With a variety of dining, entertainment and recreational options, cruisers will never be bored or hungry.

Norwegian Encore Features Popular Alaskan Round-Trip Cruises from Seattle

Encore homeports in Seattle, with itineraries that visit Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point , Victoria, B.C. , Glacier Bay National Park and Tracy Arm Fjord (scenic cruising). Seven-night round trips from Seattle provide an easy start and finish for an Alaskan cruise -- with airfare that often is lower than alternatives.

Dining highlights on Norwegian Encore include Cagney’s , which delights the taste buds with a traditional steakhouse. Teppanyaki brings the far east onboard with dinner and a show. Get your seafood fix at Ocean Blue with a waterfront view of the scenery. And don’t forget that guests staying in The Haven have an exclusive eatery.

Sleeping on Norwegian Encore includes a ship-within-a-ship concept called The Haven -- an enclave for suite guests. One of the most popular Alaska cruise cabin offerings is Encore’s eighty-two studio cabins for those cruising solo. For those looking for the best views without worrying about which side to be on, there are seven decks of rear-facing balconies for a view that’s unbeatable in Alaska.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Norwegian Encore include educational guides that teach little ones about the state's nature and culture in the kids' club. Plus, there’s Park ranger-led narration in Glacier Bay. Between ports, guests can sip on Alaskan craft beers served in bars throughout the ship. And Encore is well-known for its top-deck activities like go-kart racetrack, laser tag and waterslides.

3. Holland America Koningsdam May Be One of the Best Ships for a Quieter Alaska Cruise

Koningsdam (Photo: Holland America)

Koningsdam doesn’t have bumper cars or water parks. This is a ship that prides itself on dining and a relaxed, traditional cruising experience. Service and food quality in the complimentary main dining room are top-notch, but for-fee restaurants like Pinnacle Grill and Tamarind make for splurge-worthy romantic dates.

The ship tends to appeal to a more mature crowd, though you will see more families and multigenerational groups on Alaska cruises. Holland America typically loads Alaska waters with multiple ships. Look for favorites like Westerdam , Nieuw Amsterdam , Noordam , Zaandam and Eurodam .

Koningsdam Serves Up a Taste of Alaska, Both On and Off the Ship

Koningsdam homeports in Vancouver, visiting all the most popular Alaska cruise ports like Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Glacier Bay National Park and Tracy Arm Fjord (scenic cruising).

Dining highlights on Koningsdam include Pinnacle Grille, which serves salmon, halibut and crab legs if you’re looking for a taste of Alaska. The line offers free room service (except for a few extra-charge items) that's perfect for balcony meals and snacks while you watch the scenery. The ship has a nice blend of casual and dress-up restaurants for an Alaska cruise.

Sleeping on Koningsdam comes with multiple cabin choices, including Neptune Suites with their long list of perks, including the ever-important binoculars. Rear-facing Vista Suites are idyllic on decks four and seven. Family Oceanview rooms make this ship perfect for taking along the kids or grands.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Koningsdam : Park rangers and native Huna interpreters share a wealth of knowledge on Glacier Bay sailings. The Junior Rangers program teaches kids about local wildlife. Live music keeps guests entertained as the ship sails to the next port. The Culinary Arts Center offers cooking classes by Food & Wine Magazine. Plus, and the main pool has a retractable roof for inclement weather.

4. Radiance of the Seas Is Loaded with Windows for Alaska Scenic Cruising

Radiance of the Seas (Photo: Royal Caribbean)

Radiance of the Seas offers Royal Caribbean 's best in a more modest size, without sacrificing the variety of dining venues, great kids' programs and adrenaline-pumping activities the line is known for. The 2,112-passenger ship features the line's much-loved Giovanni's Table and Izumi , a 200-square-foot outdoor movie screen, rock climbing wall and a nursery for babies and toddlers.

Radiance of the Seas Is One of the Best Ships for One-Way Alaskan Cruise Itineraries

Passengers range from young couples and singles to families and active retirees. Radiance sails seven-night, one-way routes between Seward and Vancouver. It calls on Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Sitka , Icy Strait Point, the Inside Passage and Hubbard Glacier (scenic cruising).

Dining highlights on Radiance of the Seas include Chops Grille Steakhouse , a must try for a night out. Izumi Asian food is priced a la carte for grab and go when you can’t take your eyes off the scenery. And Radiance has only one of two Brazilian steakhouses in the fleet. Try Samba Grill when you’ve had your fill of Alaskan seafood.

Sleeping on Radiance of the Seas means plenty of Oceanview balconies to choose from for scenery watching. Plus, there are an abundance of rooms that sleep extras, as well as those that connect for families. And for those on a budget, there are affordable inside cabins.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Radiance of the Seas include Bike and Brew excursions featuring biking, drinking and glacier viewing. Onboard naturalists offer insight into the region as you cruise. The crew cheerfully dole out flannel blankets and hot cocoa on deck. The ship has an all-weather, indoor, adults-only pool. For entertainment onboard, the ship has the line’s signature rock-climbing wall plus mini golf.

5. Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas Proves Mega Ships Can Be Perfect for Families in Alaska

Quantum of the Seas in Alaska (Photo: Melinda Crow)

Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas is an ideal family-oriented ship for cruising in Alaska, with its forward-facing solarium area, complete with an adults-only pool, plus a separate family indoor pool. Then there’s the massive indoor activity zone called the SeaPlex featuring bumper cars, laser tag and even pickleball.

The ship carries just over 4,900 passengers at full capacity and has a layout capable of managing that crowd quite easily.

Quantum of the Seas Makes Cruising Alaska Easy from Seattle, with All the Bells and Whistles Families Crave

Quantum homeports in Seattle, operating seven-night round-trip itineraries that visit all the popular Alaska cruise ports like Ketchikan, Endicott Arm Fjord (scenic cruising), Juneau, Victoria, B.C. and Icy Strait Point.

The best ships for Alaska cruises offer enough dining options to keep the gang happily fed between ports. The dining highlights on Quantum of the Seas include an exclusive dining room ( Coastal Kitchen ) for suite guests and upper-level loyalty club members. Plus, Café @ TWO70 is one of the best grab and go eateries at sea, featuring deli style sandwiches and salads, plus breakfast goodies.

Sleeping on Quantum of the Seas comes with an insane number of cabin options, so there’s something for everyone on any budget. Choices include forward-facing Spacious Oceanview rooms that provide a unique view in Alaskan waters. Even though the ship does not have the line’s largest suites, it has a good variety, including multi-deck suites. There’s also a suite lounge.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Quantum of the Seas include rides in the North Star gondola that rises out over the water on an extendable arm. For a little less excitement, the best spot to cozy up with a hot toddy is in the adults-only Solarium with some of the best indoor cruise ship views of Alaska.

After dark, dance the night away in the two-story Music Hall -- complete with self-leveling pool tables. Or enjoy a thrilling sports-filled evening in the SeaPlex -- as a participant or spectator -- complete with hotdogs onsite. Take note that Quantum is pretty much the only ship in Alaska where you can have a robot mix you a drink.

6. Luminosa Rounds Out Carnival’s Alaska Fleet with a Slightly Different Spin on Fun

Carnival Luminosa (Photo: Carnival Cruise Line)

Carnival Luminosa may not have quite the same attributes as the rest of the Carnival fleet. But its Italian flair coupled with an extensive retrofit to make it feel more at home to Carnival cruisers, makes it a fun fit for Alaska cruises. The ship carries a comfortable 2,260 passengers -- about the same cozy size as Carnival’s other ships cruising Alaskan waters, like Carnival Spirit .

Luminosa homeports in Seattle, operating seven-night round-trip itineraries that include Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Victoria , Tracy Arm (scenic cruising), and Skagway.

Dining highlights on Carnival Luminosa include ample choices for variety, whether you stick with included eateries or add in some extra-fee dining. Reviews say the ship possibly offers the best pizza at sea in Alaska. And Bonsai Sushi Express makes an ideal takeaway option on busy Alaskan port days.

Sleeping on Carnival Luminosa features Carnival’s popular spa suites -- a great choice in Alaska, where soaking away your sore muscles from hiking/kayaking is almost a necessity. There are a handful of aft balconies for bi-directional scenery watching in Alaska. And while Carnival isn’t known for massive suites, Luminosa has a nice selection of mid-sized suites, as well as an exclusive Serenity Retreat with its own pool.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Carnival Luminosa include possibly the only pasta making lessons at sea in Alaska. The main Lido pool has a retractable roof for inclement weather, something only a handful of Carnival ships offer. A Seuss-A-Palooza character parade keeps the littlest cruisers interested. And don’t miss the naturalist talks onboard and even a lumberjack show on the pool deck.

7. Discovery Princess Sets the Bar High Among All the Princess Ships in Alaska

Discovery Princess in Ketchikan, Alaska (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Discovery Princess is the lead ship (and one of the newest) in one of the best cruise line fleets in Alaska. Princess is a tough competitor in the region with multiple ships to choose from, including Grand Princess , Ruby Princess , Sapphire Princess and Royal Princess . Fleetwide staples include lavish adults-only sun decks and Movies Under the Stars (complete with popcorn and cozy fleece blankets).

The line’s partnership with the Discovery Channel offers a slew of activities for adults and kids alike, so you've got something for everyone.

Expect Homeport Ease, Plenty of Choices and Innovative Pricing on Discovery Princess

Discovery Princess offers round-trip cruises from a homeport in Seattle, with itineraries that include Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Victoria, BC, and Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier (scenic cruising).

Dining on Discovery Princess includes surprises like Alaska seafood bowls served in the World Fresh Marketplace . Don’t miss the Crown Grill during your cruise. It’s one of the best steakhouses at sea.

Princess offers upfront inclusive pricing plans that let you decide how much to include in your cruise fare -- or how much to leave off. Some of the scaled pricing plans include not only drinks, Wi-Fi and gratuities, but bonus extras like free room service and casual dining choices that normally have a charge.

Sleeping on Discovery Princess has you mostly choosing from insides, balconies or suites, with only a handful of oceanview staterooms. Most of the prime aft balcony cabins are suites, but in Alaska, these may be worth moving up for -- particularly the Mini-suites. The general advice is to skip the forward-facing balconies. Wind when the ship is underway makes them almost useless.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Discovery Princess are eating -- local cuisine is served onboard daily – and dancing under the midnight sun. Top-deck parties with live music get you in the groove throughout the sailing. Possibly the best onboard activity is Puppies in the Piazza where sled dog puppies come onboard for a day. Hidden gem not to miss: The wake view Pool on deck 15 offers breathtaking views.

8. Cunard's Queen Elizabeth Brings a Touch of Formality to Alaska

Queen Elizabeth (Photo:Christina Janansky/Cruise Critic)

Queen Elizabeth captures the spirit of ocean liners of a bygone era, making it a special treat in Alaska waters. The ship is elegant and provides a premium and uncrowded experience for just over 2,000 guests. Unlike the mainstream lines, the QE sails a short season in Alaska, but on mostly longer cruises that allow for more in-depth exploration.

Expect the Best of Alaska and Cunard When They Come Together

The Queen Elizabeth homeports in either Vancouver or Seattle, depending on the year. Itineraries include stops in Ketchikan, Juneau, Victoria, B.C., Tracy Arm Fjord (scenic cruising), Skagway, Haines , Glacier Bay National Park (scenic cruising) and Hubbard Glacier (scenic cruising).

Dining Highlights on Queen Elizabeth include the can’t-miss afternoon tea and in-cabin Champagne breakfast. Alaskan seafood is served throughout the voyage.

Sleeping on Queen Elizabeth means choosing from a cabin category -- each with a set of accompanying perks and exclusive dining privileges. Even the lowest Britannia cabin category has premium touches like a half bottle of Champagne on embarkation, robes and slippers and fresh fruit on request. For a full rear-facing view, expect to book a more expensive choice because aft cabins are all suites.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Queen Elizabeth : Enrichment and Cunard cruises go hand in hand, so expect a deep dive into Alaskan food and culture. Dancing is one of the most popular activities on a Cunard cruise, and entertainment includes jazz and classical concerts. There’s a netted golf area for practicing your swing.

The ship has an “adult” feel, but there are kids’ clubs for various ages featuring Alaska enrichment. The Native Voices program couples video presentations with native guides onboard the ship. Look for an Alaskan-themed buffet in the Lido one evening.

9. Silversea Brings One of Its Newest Ships to Alaska for a Luxurious Experience: Silver Nova

Silver Nova sails under a blue sky. (Photo: Silversea)

Guests on Silver Nova in Alaska will feel more like they're on a five-star hotel than a cruise ship. The 728-passenger vessel attracts a 55+ crowd. Marble bathrooms come with a choice between Bulgari or Ortigia amenities. Rooms aside, the ship features high-quality dining and included extras like select wine and spirits.

Silversea typically deploys two of its best ships for Alaska cruises. Also look for Silver Muse and Silver Moon alongside Silver Nova. All Silversea ships offer either door-to-door inclusive fares or port-to-port.

Silver Nova Lets You Cruise Alaska in Luxury

Silver Nova operates seven-night one-way routes with homeports in Seward and Vancouver. Ports it visits include Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Sitka, Icy Strait Point, Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage. Look for longer routes on Silver Moon and Silver Muse, visiting Haines, Valdez and Wrangell .

Dining highlights on Silver Nova include three extra-fee restaurants, while all other food options are included. In-room dining served course-by-course by your butler is a treat after a long day exploring in port. For a fun meal under the midnight sun (there are heaters and blankets) give Hot Rocks a try.

Sleeping on Silver Nova is as luxurious as it gets. All rooms on Silver Nova are suites, and most have spacious balconies. Butler service is included in every suite category. Binoculars are provided in your suite.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Silver Nova revolve around immersion. Speakers include noted historians and conservationists. Local Alaskan seafood is incorporated into evening menus. Shore excursions you’d pay extra for on mainstream lines are included on Silver Nova.

10. Regent Seven Seas Explorer Is One of the Best Ships for Inclusive Alaska Cruising

Prime 7 on Seven Seas Explorer (Photo: Cruise Critic)

Seven Seas Explorer is an all-suite ship, and every suite has a balcony with at least 252 square feet of prime Alaska viewing space. This is an all-inclusive luxury ship attracting both mature couples and a few affluent families. Passengers shell out up-front, but enjoy included amenities such as shore excursions, specialty restaurants, alcoholic beverages and gratuities.

Seven Seas Explorer Offers All-Suite Luxury and Enrichment

The ship runs seven-night one-way routes, as well as a handful of longer sailings. It homeports in Seward and Vancouver, visiting the ports of Ketchikan, Sitka, Skagway, Juneau, Icy Strait Point and Hubbard Glacier (scenic cruising).

Dining highlights on Seven Seas Explorer include an amazing chop house. Menus on Alaska sailings all include local seafood. And don’t miss the pool deck barbeque.

Sleeping on Seven Seas Explorer means choosing a suite is simple because all rooms are suites. Even the smallest suites include butler service and walk-in closets. The ship has twenty adjoining suites for families traveling together. Concierge suites and above have binoculars and cashmere blankets to use during the cruise. All bathrooms have bathtub/shower combos and L'Occitane bath products.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Seven Seas Explorer include lecturers onboard most sailings, as well as an enriching kids' program for ages 5 to 17. Alaskan menu items include halibut and king crab legs. The thermal suite is open to all adult guests. Just picture yourself warming up on a heated lounger.

11. Viking Orion Emphasizes Exploration in Alaska with 10-Night, All-Adult Sailings

Viking Orion (Photo: Cruise Critic)

Viking Orion guests will feel the line’s drive to explore upon embarking this 930-passenger ship that treats adventurous-minded travelers to global cuisine with several Norwegian delicacies (a nod to the line's Nordic roots). When it comes time to unwind, there are plenty of places to laze away and soak up the scenery -- all while enjoying the many perks that are included in your cruise fare.

Viking Alaska Cruises Include Overnights Onboard the Ship in Seward

Viking sailings feature an extended version of Alaska one-way sailings, with more ports visited, more scenic cruising and an overnight in Seward (no matter which direction you cruise) that allows guests to explore Anchorage . Orion homeports in Vancouver and Seward. It visits Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Sitka, Valdez, Icy Strait Point, and the Inside Passage and Yakutat Bay (scenic cruising).

Dining highlights on Viking Orion include Nordic menu options, but don’t miss one of the best Italian restaurants at sea. The Chef’s Table is included in the fare, with international cuisine that rotates every three days. Viking’s buffet restaurant is second to none -- a huge plus in Alaska when long days in port often call for casual dining.

Sleeping on Viking Orion is like no other cruise line. All staterooms on Orion include premium touches like spacious bathrooms with heated floors and automatic lights in closets and near the bathroom door. For the best Alaska views, try for the pair of aft-facing Deluxe Verandah rooms on decks three-five. For easy access to the included thermal suite, aim for a forward stateroom.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Viking Orion include naturalists and expert resident lecturers. Don’t miss the infinity-edge pool and hot tub on the back of the ship. Plus, the covered main pool is perfect for a swim on chilly Alaskan days. At least one excursion is included in every port. You can even pack less for a Viking Orion cruise because there are complimentary laundry facilities on each cabin deck.

6 best Alaska cruises for families

Erica Silverstein

Adorable sled dog puppies, graceful whales, fascinating totem poles, lively lumberjacks and majestic glaciers — Alaska has much to offer families of all ages. But if you're looking for the best Alaska cruise for kids, which ship should you choose?

Families have great choices when sailing up north, including a ship full of Disney characters, one with laser tag and a go-kart race track, and many with expansive play spaces for kids, waterslides and family-focused onboard activities. Look for bigger ships with plenty of amusements; smaller and older ships might not have as many kid-friendly attractions.

I'm not mentioning luxury cruise ships here because they are geared for adults, but families looking for a more upscale, smaller-ship cruise to Alaska should know that many high-end lines will put on some kid programming during summer-break cruises to Alaska with a higher-than-usual number of children on board.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If you're ready to cross Alaska off your bucket list, here are our recommendations for the best Alaska cruises for families.

7-night Alaska Adventure cruise on Quantum of the Seas

alaska cruise suite

The 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas is not one of Royal Caribbean 's largest-in-the-world Oasis Class ships, which boast zip lines, ice skating rinks and AquaTheaters. But it still offers a great mix of activities, including a skydiving simulator, a high-tech theater with robotic "dancing" screens, an escape room, an indoor basketball court/bumper car pavilion, and dedicated spaces for both kids and adults.

Kids can gobble up hot dogs and pizza at themed eateries, while adults can enjoy date night at Wonderland with its imaginative molecular gastronomy or Jamie's Italian, created by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

Seven-night Alaska cruises sail round-trip from the easily accessible port of Seattle and visit Sitka, Skagway and Juneau, Alaska, as well as Victoria, British Columbia. One day is spent cruising through the scenic Endicott Arm to Dawes Glacier. Sailings depart between May and August.

7-night Alaska cruise on Disney Wonder

alaska cruise suite

Disney Cruise Line 's 1,754-passenger Disney Wonder (which can carry 2,713 guests when completely full) is the perfect-size ship for a family cruise to Alaska. It's smaller than many of the megaships catering to families in this part of the world, so guests can view glaciers and enjoy shore excursions without feeling too crowded.

The ship is full of Disney magic — photo ops with Mickey and friends and Disney princesses, restaurants themed to "The Little Mermaid" and "The Princess and the Frog," and a musical stage show of "Frozen."

Cabins are thoughtfully designed for families, with plentiful bunk beds and split bathrooms so two people can get ready for bed at once. Waiters assist with cutting up food for little cruisers or bringing pureed baby food, and the imaginative kids clubs keep little ones happily occupied when you're not exploring in port.

Disney Wonder's weeklong Alaska cruises sail round-trip from Vancouver, so all Americans, even kids, will need passports to fly in to the departure port. The ship visits Juneau, Ketchikan and either Skagway or Icy Strait Point, with glacier viewing at the Stikine Icecap. Seasonal sailings run from May to September.

7-night Alaska cruise on Carnival Spirit

alaska cruise suite

Carnival Cruise Line 's Alaska cruises aboard the 2,124-guest Carnival Spirit might not be the cheapest sailings the line offers, but you get a lot for your money. Families will appreciate not having to pay extra for kid-friendly eats at the onboard pizzeria, Mexican outlet, Guy Fieri's burger joint and all-day soft-serve ice cream station. Comedy shows (both family-friendly and adults-only), an onboard water park, minigolf, and kid, tween and teen clubs are also included in the fare.

Cabins are no-frills but tend to be roomier than comparable cabins on competitors' ships. Many rooms sleep four, but connecting cabins will get you more space and an extra bathroom while still keeping the family together.

Carnival Spirit spends summers in Alaska from late April to mid-September. It sails round-trip from Seattle and visits Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Victoria, with scenic cruising in Tracy Arm Fjord.

7-night Glacier Bay cruise on Norwegian Encore

alaska cruise suite

Norwegian Cruise Line offers one of the longest cruise seasons in Alaska, and Norwegian Encore is based in the region from April through October each year. This might not help the typical family, but if your kids are young, you homeschool or have atypical breaks, a shoulder-season deal might be waiting for you.

The 3,998-passenger ship is NCL's biggest , and families will be amazed at how much there is to do on board (though be prepared to pull out your credit card for the best activities). The ship features a laser tag arena, go-kart race track, virtual reality pavilion and water park.

Norwegian is also known for its entertainment, and after a day hiking on glaciers or chowing down at salmon bakes, you can take in the spectacular "Choir of Man," sing along to the Beatles tribute show at The Cavern Club or laugh yourself silly at The Social Comedy Club.

Like many of the best Alaska cruises for families, Norwegian Encore sails round-trip from Seattle, stopping in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria. The standout day on this itinerary is scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve , which only a limited number of ships can visit each year. Save more by taking advantage of Free at Sea perks , which often include a free beverage package, Wi-Fi, shore excursion credit, specialty dining and — perfect for families — free third and fourth guests in each cabin.

7-night Voyage of the Glaciers cruise on Sapphire Princess

alaska cruise suite

Families with a little more vacation time might want to tack a visit to the Alaskan interior before or after their cruise, either independently or with a cruisetour. For this, you'll need a one-way cruise that begins or ends in an Alaskan port.

A top candidate for this kind of family vacation is a seven-night cruise on Princess Cruises ' Sapphire Princess, sailing between Vancouver and Whittier, Alaska. The ship stops in Ketchikan, Juneau and either Skagway or Sitka, with scenic cruising in Glacier Bay and either College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier, depending on the itinerary.

It's then up to you whether you spend your pre- or post-cruise time in the Kenai Fjords area, in Anchorage or traveling north to Denali National Park, Fairbanks or into the Arctic.

Sapphire Princess is known for its fan-favorite Alfredo's pizza, Movies Under the Stars (when the Alaskan weather permits), and snacks and entertainment in the central Piazza. With its special North to Alaska activities, families can cuddle some adorable sled dogs on board the ship and meet Iditarod winners and other notable locals. Kids can become junior rangers with the help of the park rangers who come aboard the ship in Glacier Bay.

7-night Kids in Nature cruise on Wilderness Legacy

alaska cruise suite

Suppose your family isn't into the big-ship lifestyle and wants a small-ship, off-the-beaten-path experience that's also geared toward families with kids and teens. In that case, the best family cruise to Alaska for you might be the "Kids in Nature" departures of UnCruise Adventures ' 86-passenger Wilderness Legacy.

The ship sails round-trip from Juneau on "Wild Woolly & Wow with Glacier Bay" itineraries. These seven-night cruises include hiking and biking on Chichagof Island, daytime and evening kayak and skift tours in places like Patterson Bay and Robert and Crow Islands, exploring Glacier Bay's less-visited "Outback," and visits to the LeConte and Baird glaciers.

On several departure dates from late April through August 2025, Wilderness Legacy will staff up with "Kid Wranglers" who will lead the kid-focused activities. The minimum age to sail is 8 years old, but plenty of tweens and teens join the fun as well.

Bottom line

You no longer have to wait until you're retired to explore Alaska. Take the kids on a weeklong exploration of the 49th state, and you'll have plenty of great choices for cruise ships and itineraries. The best Alaska cruises for families combine action-packed itineraries with vessels designed for family fun, but we're sure your family can find a way to have a great time up north no matter which cruise ship you select.

Royal Caribbean Vs Norwegian Cruise Line: Which Is Best?

This post may contain affiliate links. if you click one, i may earn a commission at no cost to you. as an amazon associate, i earn from qualifying purchases..

If you like your cruise ships to be packed with exciting entertainment, offer a wide range of dining options, and you’re not too worried about the ‘tradition’ of cruising in favour of new innovations, then you’ll probably love either Royal Caribbean or NCL.

The image shows two cruise ships side by side with a "VS" in the middle. The left ship is the "Icon of the Seas" from Royal Caribbean, and the right ship is from Norwegian Cruise Line, sailing in scenic waters with mountains in the background. The sky is partially cloudy with sunlight reflecting on the ships and the water.

These are two of the biggest cruise lines in the world, and it can be tough to know which is the better option for you if you’re trying to decide between them.

In this side-by-side comparison, I’ll take you through everything that makes the two cruise lines similar, their differences, and help you work out which one is the best fit.

Neither of these cruise lines have a small fleet of ships, but Royal Caribbean’s is still significantly larger than that of NCL.

NCL has 19 ships in the fleet currently, and another 4 under construction, whereas Royal Caribbean has 27 and also has 4 more being built.

Royal Caribbean Ships

Aerial view of Royal Caribbean's 'Icon of the Seas' cruise ship, displaying its colorful deck attractions, including water slides and pools, as it navigates through the ocean with its name prominently displayed on the bow.

Royal Caribbean has eight classes of ships:

  • Icon Class – the biggest cruise ships in the world accommodating up to 7,600 guests each
  • Oasis Class – six mega ships that can accommodate around 6,800 guests each
  • Quantum Ultra Class – two modern ships accommodating 5,500 guests each
  • Quantum Class – three ships accommodating 4,900 guests each
  • Freedom Class – three ships accommodating 4,400 to 4,900 guests each
  • Radiance Class – four ships accommodating 2,500 guests each
  • Voyager Class – five ships accommodating 4,000 guests each
  • Vision Class – four ships accommodating 2,400 to 2,700 guests each

There’s a considerable difference in ages between the oldest ship in the fleet, which is Grandeur of the Seas, and the newest ship Icon of the Seas. Grandeur launched in 1996 and Icon launched almost 30 years later, in 2024.

Read more: Royal Caribbean Ships By Age

Norwegian Viva cruising the ocean with its blue and white majestic color matching the scene of the ocean and sky.

There are currently nine classes of ships in the NCL fleet, with a tenth on the way:

  • Prima Plus Class – four ships on order, likely accommodating 3,500 guests each
  • Prima Class – two ships accommodating 3,200 guests each
  • Breakaway Plus Subclass – four ships accommodating 3,900 to 4,200 guests each
  • Breakaway Class – two ships accommodating 4,000 guests each
  • Epic Class –  one ship that accommodates 4,100 guests each
  • Jewel Class – four ships accommodating 2,400 guests each
  • Pride of America Class – one ship accommodating 2,200 guests each
  • Leo Class – one ship accommodating 2,000 guests each
  • Dawn Class – two ships accommodating 2,300 guests each
  • Sun Class – two ships accommodating 2,000 guests each

Norwegian Spirit is technically the oldest ship in the fleet as she was built in 1998, but she only joined NCL in 2004. Two other ships have served the cruise line longer – Norwegian Sun and Norwegian Star were both built in 2001.

Norwegian Viva is the newest ship , launching in 2023, so the age range of the ships between Royal Caribbean and NCL is comparable.

Read more: NCL Ships By Age

Which to Choose?

In terms of ship age, there isn’t much to separate the two cruise lines. Size does matter though and Royal Caribbean’s biggest ships are significantly bigger than the biggest NCL ships.

Icon of the Seas measures 250,800 gross tons (a measure of internal volume) while the biggest NCL ship, Norwegian Encore, is just around 170,000 –  so around a third smaller.

This might help you make your mind up – if you like the idea of sailing on the biggest ships in the world, having the most space and the widest variety of things to see and do onboard, then Royal Caribbean is the better choice.

In reality, though, the bulk of the fleets are similar sizes, so unless you’re exclusively looking at the biggest ships, the ship size or age won’t matter when picking between Royal Caribbean and NCL.

Destinations

Both Royal Caribbean and NCL are global cruise lines, in that they have itineraries available across the world. There are some differences between them though.

Here’s a look at the itineraries each offers, in summary. For Royal Caribbean this is itineraries, rather than individual dates – there are a lot more than just 47 Caribbean cruises you can book!

Royal Caribbean Destinations

This vibrant aerial image showcases Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's private island destination in the Bahamas. The photo captures the island's extensive waterpark, featuring colorful waterslides, including a massive red spiral slide, a wave pool, and an expansive swimming area. A large cruise ship is docked at the island's pier, adding to the scene's dynamic and festive atmosphere. The island is surrounded by lush greenery and crystal-clear turquoise waters, creating a perfect tropical escape for visitors. The bright colors and fun-filled water activities highlight the island as a family-friendly vacation hotspot.

Royal Caribbean offers a range of destinations and a wide range of embarkation ports too – 35 around the world, meaning you should always have one nearby.

Despite that, a huge number of Royal Caribbean’s cruises depart from one of the three main ports in Florida – Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami.

There are cruises from the UK available, all departing from Southampton and during the summer months only. For several years, the UK was able to enjoy the Quantum-class Anthem of the Seas , but from 2025 it’ll be the older Independence of the Seas taking her place.

Royal Caribbean does have two private island destinations – Labadee and Perfect Day at CocoCay . Labadee was suspended as a port of call for several months in 2024 due to unrest in parts of Haiti.

NCL Destinations

A Norwegian Cruise Line ship sails near a coastal town with colorful buildings. The ship features a large green dragon design on its side, with calm waters and a backdrop of mountains and islands under a partly cloudy sky.

With Norwegian Cruise Line, you get even more choice of embarkation ports, with an incredible 56 different options for embarking on your cruise. This includes the typical big ports on both sides of the Atlantic, but also several that are usually used as a port of call rather than an embarkation port.

NCL also offers cruises from Southampton for UK travellers, but with the slight edge that there are some dates available outside of the summer months. Not many, but of the two cruise lines, NCL will be your only option if you don’t want to fly but the summer months don’t work for you.

NCL has its own private island in the Bahamas too, called Great Stirrup Cay , which features on several of the cruises to the Caribbean.

If you’re looking at the main cruise destinations around Europe or the Caribbean, there’s not a lot between the two cruise lines to help you make your decision. It would come down to the specific ship you were sailing on, the date, or the price when booking cruises in these regions.

Unless you especially wanted to visit one of the cruise lines’ private islands . Perfect Day at CocoCay is very popular, though guests do enjoy Great Stirrup Cay too.

NCL’s a better choice for Africa and South America, while Royal Caribbean offers a lot more cruises in Alaska or Australia, so if you’re looking at those regions your mind might be made up for you.

Staterooms and Suites

With Royal Caribbean and NCL, the basic accommodation options are going to be similar – it’s the same across all cruise lines, really.

You get a choice of interior, ocean view or balcony staterooms, or suites if you’ve got a bigger budget and want more space along with some nice perks.

There are some quirks to flag though, especially on a ship like Norwegian Epic for NCL, which has split bathrooms that are really unpopular with a lot of guests, due to the way the shower is almost open into the room.

Always keep an eye on the individual room you’re booking, but to compare the two cruise lines we’ll instead look at some of the more unique accommodation options available on each.

Royal Caribbean Staterooms and Suites

Virtual balcony staterooms.

A modern stateroom on Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas with a virtual balcony, featuring a large bed, contemporary decor, and an LED screen displaying real-time ocean views, creating an innovative cruise experience.

Available on many of the newer Royal Caribbean ships, Virtual Balcony Staterooms go some way to improving the experience for guests who choose an Interior room. Rather than having four dark walls, part of one wall is taken up by a digital screen. This screen shows a live image of the view from the ship, as if you had your own balcony.

It’s no replacement for natural light, but a lot of people like the rooms as they at least let you see the time of day outside!

Interior Balcony Staterooms

The cozy Boardwalk View Stateroom with a Balcony onboard Harmony of the Seas, featuring a plush queen-sized bed with a teal runner, a sitting area, and a balcony overlooking the bustling boardwalk area of the ship.

With most cruise lines, a Balcony Stateroom will have a view of the sea, but some of Royal Caribbean’s ships are so big that they have balconies facing the inside of the ship, overlooking the Central Park or Boardwalk areas.

They’re cheaper than a sea view, and good if you just want the natural light and fresh air of a balcony but don’t care too much for the view. You just have to bear in mind that directly across from you are more staterooms, so remember to draw those curtains when getting dressed.

Ultimate Family Accommodations

The vibrant and playful Ultimate Family Townhouse on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, featuring a two-level suite with a slide, modern living area, colorful decorations, and large windows offering a panoramic ocean view.

If you handed a kid a piece of paper and some crayons and told them to design their perfect bedroom, the result would probably look like the Ultimate Family Suites and Ultimate Family Townhouses on some of Royal Caribbean’s newest ships.

These split-level suites include a massive range of features for the whole family, from piano-key staircases that actually work, to karaoke machines, and even a slide from the upper floor to the living area.

NCL Staterooms and Suites

A sophisticated bedroom within The Haven on the Norwegian Cruise Line Aqua, featuring a king-sized bed with high-quality linens, a large window with ocean views, and a chic writing desk with a vase of fresh flowers.

There are a few cruise lines that have ship-within-a-ship concepts and NCL’s is called The Haven. This is an exclusive part of the ship where the best suites are situated, along with public areas that only suite guests can access.

That includes a private restaurant, sundeck and pool, plus Haven guests get a whole host of extra perks, such as your own butler !

These are some of the best suite accommodations on any ‘mainstream’ cruise line (i.e. not one that purely targets luxury cruise guests), and well worth checking out if you want a special cruise experience.

Studio Rooms

Modern Norwegian Cruise Line Bliss studio room, featuring a cozy single bed with stylish cushions, a wall-mounted TV, a sleek vanity area with a sink and mirror, and a window showcasing a view of the sea.

At the complete other end of the scale, NCL’s Studio Rooms are some of the smallest at sea, but that’s by design. NCL has been a pioneer for single rooms, not just adding them to ships before many other cruise lines did, but expanding their range rapidly, revisiting older ships to add more rooms for solo travellers.

Yes they’re small, but they’re cheaper too, so if you just want a room where you can rest (with access to a shared Studio Lounge when you want to chill) then these are ideal.

Club Balcony

Elegant club balcony suite on a cruise ship during sunset, with a serene ocean view from the balcony, a beige daybed, a sofa with decorative pillows, abstract art on the walls, and stylish lamps providing a warm ambiance.

The Club Balcony class is what some other cruise lines would call a Mini Suite – a bridge between a Balcony Stateroom and a Suite. For a bit more money, you get up to 80 square feet of extra space compared to regular staterooms, and a small number of extra perks.

Royal Caribbean definitely has some of the more innovative stateroom options, with the Virtual Balcony rooms and those incredible Ultimate Family Accommodations.

But if you want something stylish and luxurious for adults, you might prefer The Haven to the suite options with Royal Caribbean.

And while Royal Caribbean does have a small number of single rooms, NCL offers many more and the Studio Lounge is a great addition, so that solo travellers have a dedicated space to unwind or meet others.

Food’s such an important part of cruising and with both Royal Caribbean and NCL, you really aren’t going to be short on options.

Royal Caribbean Food

The main dining room on Spectrum of the Seas, featuring elegant, modern decor with two levels of seating. The room is adorned with a striking, twisted sculpture hanging from the ceiling, and tables are set with white tablecloths and place settings, ready for dining guests. Soft, ambient lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Royal Caribbean is all about variety – there’s a restaurant or food venue for any preference, whether you want a quick burger by the pool, a late-night slice of pizza, or something really sophisticated, with the most modern ships debuting restaurants that are more experiential – such as the Empire Supper Club themed like a 1920s New York jazz club.

A newer addition worth shouting out is the Surfside Eatery on Icon-class ships , which is a kids-themed buffet right next to the kids’ splashzone area – perfect for picky eaters.

As with pretty much any cruise line, there’s a main dining room and a buffet restaurant on every ship. Traditional dining times are still a thing, but you can choose My Time Dining if you want to eat at the main restaurant at a time that suits you – you just need to pre-pay gratuities.

The dining area of Moderno on the Norwegian Epic cruise ship, showcasing an upscale buffet with a variety of dishes. The room is decorated with rich, dark wood tones, plush red and black seating, and elegant lighting. Tables are set for dining with a mix of ambient and overhead lighting creating a cozy atmosphere. Large windows in the background offer views of the ocean.

NCL was one of the first cruise lines to start to change dining on cruise ships, abandoning the idea of set dining times and offering Freestyle Dining across the main restaurants. Eat when you want – just be aware that there might be a little wait for a table if you pick a busy time.

NCL also has plenty of speciality restaurants alongside casual snack bars and more. NCL’s speciality venues are particularly popular with guests, including some fun options that aren’t common, like the Brazilian-style Moderno which offers endless meat skewers carved at your table.

This one’s a close call because both cruise lines offer exceptional flexibility when it comes to dining, with great buffets and casual options, good menus in the main dining rooms, and lots of speciality options.

Royal Caribbean edges it for kids, with better ice cream options and the newer focus on providing venues specifically aimed at kids.

But for adults, it’s hard to pick one that’s better – instead, research the ship(s) you’re looking at booking and decide based on their individual venues.

Onboard Activities

NCL and Royal Caribbean are very similar in their approaches to cruising – as many amazing features onboard as possible, so that the ships are as much of a destination as the ports of call you visit.

Royal Caribbean Activities

A guest enjoying the FlowRider surf simulator aboard Quantum of the Seas, with onlookers observing from behind a clear viewing panel and a person suspended in the skydiving simulator above, all set against a backdrop of the ship's distinctive blue and yellow funnel.

While the activities you can enjoy on a Royal Caribbean cruise depend on the specific ship you choose, there are loads of options available. These include ice skating rinks, climbing walls, and exciting slides (dry and water).

Options that you’ll find on a Royal Caribbean ship but not on NCL include:

  • FlowRider surfing simulators
  • Skydiving simulators
  • Dodgems at sea

NCL Activities

Passengers in go-karts race on the NCL Racing track atop the NCL Bliss cruise ship, with a stunning mountainous backdrop and lush greenery surrounding them, offering an exhilarating and scenic on-board activity.

NCL ships are equally exciting, and share many of the same features as Royal’s ships, such as climbing walls, bungee trampolines, laser tag, mini golf, and some fantastic water slides.

The unique features on NCL ships include:

  • Bowling alleys
  • Multi-level go-kart tracks

Each cruise line has its own unique attractions so if there’s something particular that’ll sway you – maybe you love bowling, or you’d love to give a surfing simulator a go – then choose the cruise line that offers those activities.

Otherwise, you won’t be bored on a ship for either line. Even the smaller ships have lots to do, though a general rule is the bigger and newer the ship, the better it is for activities.

Always check what your ship includes before you book, as you don’t want to get your hopes up over a particular attraction to find it’s missing when you board.

Entertainment

The live entertainment across both cruise lines is stunning – you may well struggle to pick between them!

Royal Caribbean Entertainment

The AquaTheater on Symphony of the Seas, filled with an audience watching a nighttime performance. The theater features tiered seating surrounding a central pool used for water shows, with vibrant lighting and stage effects. A large water slide is visible on the left, adding to the dynamic and exciting atmosphere of the venue.

Many cruise lines claim to offer Broadway-style entertainment but Royal Caribbean is one of the few to have licensed Broadway shows, such as Cats, Grease and Hairspray. Alongside the stage musicals, expect a broad range of family-friendly entertainment including singers, dancers and live comedy.

Where Royal Caribbean stands out is with the AquaTheater on bigger ships – these venues host amazing water-based shows themed around music and high diving. Truly spectacular.

NCL Entertainment

An empty theatre inside one of NCL's cruise ships with a huge blue curtain covering the main stage.

NCL is one of the other handful of cruise lines to have licensed Broadway shows, with Jersey Boys and Six being some of the exciting options onboard, depending on your ship.

NCL also has the very popular Burn the Floor show, which is Latin and ballroom dancing at its finest, and don’t miss the Howl at the Moon singalong (unless you hate singing along to popular songs…)

Which to Choose

You can’t choose between them here unless you have a specific show you want to catch. Royal Caribbean’s AquaTheater performances are very impressive but NCL’s variety and excellent interactive nights are just as fun.

Kids Facilities

Royal caribbean kids facilities.

The colorful and inviting Adventure Ocean kids' area on Icon of the Seas, designed with boat-shaped bookshelves, bright geometric shapes, and playful seating on a wavy blue carpet, creating a fun learning and play environment for children.

Adventure Ocean is the name of the main kids’ clubs on Royal Caribbean ships, with lots of varied activities based in venues such as the Adventure Science Lab and the Imagination Studio.

Teens are also catered for with dedicated spaces for 12-14 year olds and 15-17 year olds. Rather than being structured, they have more of a flexible programme so that teens can pick and choose what to get involved in, and when to just chill in their lounge areas.

NCL Kids Facilities

Vibrant children's playroom at Splash Academy on NCL Getaway, featuring colorful bean bags, interactive games, and whimsical decorations, providing a fun and engaging space for young cruisers.

NCL’s clubs work similar, with Splash Academy for children and pre-teens, and then Entourage aimed at 13 to 17-year-olds, with a chilled space for them to relax, play video games and more.

The key difference is that teens are generally grouped together in one space, which isn’t ideal.

Suggested read: Cruise Kids Club Age Groupings Guide

Royal Caribbean slightly edges it here if you have teens, especially older teens who don’t want to share a space with 13-year-olds.

If you’re only sailing with younger kids then both cruise lines offer plenty of fun activities to enjoy and they’ll have a great time regardless.

Cruiser Demographics

Royal caribbean demographics.

A family enjoying their vacation together, standing inside the glass-enclosed viewing area on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship with a panoramic view of the port and city in the background.

On a Royal Caribbean cruise, expect to see a lot of families, but there are plenty of couples, friend groups and solo cruisers too. In terms of age profile there’s a broad mix, but the average guest is between 30 and 50. The prices tend to stop most younger families with parents under 30 from cruising, though there will no doubt be some.

On smaller ships , don’t be surprised to find a lot more guests who are older. People have been loyal to Royal Caribbean for many years and the older generations do still love the quieter ships.

NCL Demographics

Three women sharing a joyful moment on a cruise ship's deck, with two holding glasses of wine and one with a cocktail. They are casually dressed, enjoying the open ocean view under a clear blue sky, reflecting a relaxed and luxurious NCL cruise experience.

NCL also targets a slightly younger market than traditional cruise lines might, with guests typically aged between 30 and 50.

Again, it’s one where there’s a good mix of passengers including families, but NCL probably has slightly more of a party vibe onboard. If Royal Caribbean is fun for all ages, especially families, then NCL is fun for all ages, especially younger adults.

Families still love NCL, and young adults will have a great time on a Royal Caribbean cruise, but the cruise lines just slightly lean into those markets a little more.

You won’t get the very cheapest cruise deals with either Royal Caribbean or NCL, but they aren’t the most expensive cruises you can book either.

Royal Caribbean Prices

You can get good deals on a Royal Caribbean cruise, but usually only on the smaller and older ships in the fleet.

The newer Icon-class and Quantum-class ships are a lot more expensive, with the Icon ships specifically being quite a lot more than others in the fleet – but they’re selling, because people want to try the biggest ships in the world.

Wonder of the Seas is an example of a large ship, but not the biggest, and she offers 7-night Caribbean cruises from between £100/$130 and £130/$165 per person, per night for an Inside Stateroom.

NEW DEALS JUST RELEASED!

Don’t miss the latest Royal Caribbean offers…

It’s not as easy to compare an NCL price with Royal Caribbean’s fares, because NCL offers different fare options, including the Free at Sea promotion which will offer extra benefits such as free drinks, free WiFi or free speciality dining (or a combination of them).

Read more: Free at Sea vs Free at Sea Plus

Generally, expect prices to be slightly higher than Royal Caribbean offers. A typical cruise in the Caribbean on the newest ships will be between £100/$130 and £150/$190, but always check the inclusions.

Don’t miss the latest NCL offers…

The Verdict

There’s no way that I could definitely say that either Royal Caribbean or NCL is the better cruise line of the two. So much will depend on your travel party, your priorities when you’re on a cruise, where you want to sail and more.

NCL is slightly more aimed at young adults while Royal Caribbean is more about family cruising, and yet families won’t feel out of place on an NCL ship and vice versa.

Always check the specific ships regardless of which line you lean towards, as many of the best features are only on the newest ships in each fleet – arguably there’s a bigger difference in cruise experience between Icon of the Seas and Vision of the Seas, than there is between Icon of the Seas and Norwegian Viva!

San Francisco

alaska cruise suite

San Francisco is a golden dream come true, a place where heart, mind and soul embrace, lost in the simplicity of delightful deliverance. Fog and sun mingle playfully above America's favorite city; the cool, cloudy comfort of early morning slowly dissolving into the peaceful warmth of a gentle afternoon glow. Touch it....it is real. Feel it.....it is the essence of escape. Savor it.....it is one of a kind. Little wonder why San Francisco has been named the world's top city twice by readers of Condé Nast Traveler; the top U.S. city seven times since 1988. San Francisco's neighborhoods comprise its inner beauty, enhancing daydreams, opening doors to new and exciting visions. The City is a cultural wonderland, an ethnic treasure chest where custom, tradition and history are preserved, celebrated, shared. So take your time and explore The City. You'll find that the Gold Rush days have never really ended here; there's still plenty of gold to be found. The restless spirit of The City's Barbary Coast past lives on, fueled by a desire to be different, nurtured by infinite viewpoints, personalities, styles. Magical moments abound. The echo of cable car bells from atop great hills. The rejuvenation of the soul upon crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. The splendor and elegance of a boat cruise on San Francisco Bay. The soft touching of wine glasses over a gourmet meal. The views. The people. The sights. The sounds. The City. So come and share the wealth. Let your heart, mind and soul wander. Stay as long as you like. San Francisco encourages lingering. It was designed with adventure, romance and pleasure in mind. It is one of life's great indulgences, so indulge. It is one of the world's most gratifying escapes, so escape. It is where the world comes to unwind. It is America's preeminent playground.

alaska cruise suite

A city of southeast Alaska on an island in the Alexander Archipelago. A supply point for miners during the gold rush of the 1890s, it is now a major port and tourist center on the Inside Passage. Population: 7,450.

alaska cruise suite

Considered the "gem" of Southeast Alaska, the city is nestled against the ocean, tucked tight against the mountains and back-dropped by the lush green of the largest national forest in the United States, the Tongass. Visitors will find that Juneau is not only the state's capital, but it's also a melting pot of history, unique topography and jaw-dropping scenery that is found nowhere else on the planet. Whether it's wildlife viewing, glacier trekking, ziplining or just shopping for locally created artwork, visitors to this remote yet extraordinary region will certainly find a bit of "Alaska" to take home.

alaska cruise suite

Skagway, with a population of 862, is located in the Upper Lynn Canal at the northernmost point on the Inside Passage in Southeast Alaska, 100 air miles north of Juneau and 110 road miles south of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. The City of Skagway is geographically the largest city in Alaska with 455 square land miles. Skagway's history and spectacular natural setting combine to create unparalleled sightseeing and recreation opportunities. Poke around on your own, or select from a variety of commercial tours. Either way, you will be amply rewarded with the sights and activities in and around Skagway.

Endicott Arm

alaska cruise suite

Amid a forest of trees and a pristine mountain expanse you'll find a steep waterway otherwise known as Endicott Arm. The "arm" pierces 30 miles into the Coast Mountain Range offering up some spectacular sights for cruise passengers. Floating with you in Endicott Arm are 3-story pieces of ice that have "calved" (split) from the glaciers that line the waterway. Some of those chunks of ice are as long as a city block; some are as small as an ice cube. A visit to Endicott Arm proves that the best way to see and appreciate the wildlife and glaciers of Alaska is from the window or railing of your cruise ship. Keep those binoculars handy. As you move slowly and silently through the arm look for black and brown bears, mountain goats, wolverines, Sitka black-tailed deer, eagles, sea lions and harbor seals. Spectacular wildlife framed by glistening glaciers and blue, blue waters. Just another day in Alaska!

Prince Rupert

Prince Rupert is a port city on British Columbia’s northwest coast. It’s a gateway to wilderness areas like the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Sanctuary bear habitat. Shops and cafes dot the waterfront Cow Bay area. The Museum of Northern B.C. showcases the region’s natural and cultural heritage. South, the North Pacific Cannery traces the city’s salmon-canning history. Humpback whales swim in the fish-filled waters offshore.
