Travels for All Seasons: How to Plan Trips for Any Time of Year

I’m in trip planning mode at the moment and I’ve been worrying about weather. These days my travel plans have to fit around things like courses I’m teaching, times my husband can get away, kindergarten terms and more. It’s a far cry from my full time travel life when I had plenty of time and just needed to pick a destination with the right climate to suit my purpose. So suddenly I can’t just go to a beautiful beach in summer or the Alps in winter to enjoy places as they’re meant to be enjoyed. Bottom line: I have to get flexible about seasons and weather.

Vagabondish is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn a small affiliate commission. Read our disclosure .

So I’m getting over my aversion to bad weather and thinking hard about how to make the best of the trips I’m planning, even though the time of year won’t be ideal in terms of weather. Perhaps my strategies will help you too, if you end up traveling to fit other kinds of planning limits than the weather.

Alternative Activities

Put some thought into alternatives for activities in your destination. Perhaps you’d hoped to be in Switzerland over winter so you could hit the slopes – but the Alps are also an incredible place for some summer hiking too.

I’m trying to plan a trip to visit some friends in the Aran Islands off Ireland and I’m told it’s a pretty desolate place mid-winter; for a while it looked like that’s exactly when I’d be landing there so I was thinking of lots of good indoor activity instead – probably involving lots of getting to know the locals! In fact it looks like it’ll be a late spring trip after all but at least I’m prepared if the weather turns bad.

Hiking the Alps, Switzerland

No Bad Weather, Only Bad Clothes

Here in Perth, Western Australia, where the temperature never (ever) drops below freezing, we never have snow and we swelter through many century-heat days in summer. I initially found it hard to deal with colder climes on my travels. Numerous people (all of whom came from much colder countries than me) gave me the advice that there is no bad weather, only bad clothes.

It took me a few years to get geared up but I am a firm believer of this adage now. So just get prepared, invest in the right clothes for the weather – be it hot or cold – and be comfortable.

Choose the Right Time of Day

Rather than just go gung-ho into whatever you wanted to do, regardless of the weather, figure out the more sensible way to do it which suits the climate and the season. For example, lots of people who come to Australia want to go bush walking and explore the outback. If they are here during summer then it’s not only really uncomfortable, but it can be pretty dangerous too, as it gets much hotter than most people are used to. Rather than trudge though that heat and risk your health, look at alternatives like waking super-early and doing a nice early morning walk, and then having a siesta nap in the afternoon (hopefully in an air-conditioned room).

One of my favourite Aussie summer experiences was joining a night-time walk which had two advantages. We avoided the heat (and flies) of the day, and because we were guided by experienced bushwalkers we were also shown the abundance of nocturnal wildlife that was out and about at that time (because like us, animals avoid the heat of the day).

Stay Indoors

If it’s either too hot or too cold, then indoor destinations are likely to be winners. Destinations with quite extreme climates are likely to be set up well in this regard.

I remember visiting northern Finland during winter (and I have to say that although it was by far the coldest place I’ve ever visited, I’d finally got the “right” clothes and it barely bothered me). They had a good selection of museums and exhibitions available that also gave a good taste of what outdoor life there was like.

Rethink Your Expectations

Finally, one of the best ways to deal with traveling in what you might consider the “wrong” season is simply to think about what you’re expecting and then alter your ideas.

For example, if you’re headed to a beach destination but it’ll be the middle of winter and too cold to go swimming, consider how you can enjoy the experience of a beach in winter. I really love bundling up and taking a long walk along a beach in cold weather. It’s never crowded with swimmers, you can often find lots of interesting objects washed up on the shore, and the smell of sea air during winter is really refreshing.

Similarly, if you are heading to a beautiful landscape but the grey weather of winter means you won’t be able to take those gorgeous photos you’d been wanting to, then look for a different perspective. Perhaps macro photos of the vegetation are just as impressive, or a bit of Photoshopping to lighten a dark sky — it’s all a matter of just adjusting your thinking a bit, and then it really won’t matter what season you travel in.

The best time to visit Turkey: when to plan your unforgettable trip

Image may contain Balloon Aircraft Transportation and Vehicle

Turkey has ancient attractions, fascinating traditions, and exceptional beaches. This landscape is so diverse that the best time to visit Turkey varies greatly depending on what you want from the trip. In 2023, nearly 50 million international visitors visited the country, a testament to its enduring appeal. While many travellers make a beeline for the serene shores of Turkey’s Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, there’s something for everyone among the cities, wildernesses and coastlines.

Blue Mosque Turkey

When is the best time to visit Turkey?

While summer is a popular time for tourists to visit Turkey, the best time to visit Turkey is spring, which lasts from March to May . The temperature ranges between a pleasant 10°C-25°C, and average precipitation is low, so the conditions to explore Turkey's beautiful cities and towns on foot are ideal. This, along with summer, is typically the peak tourist season in Turkey. Cappadocia, home to the iconic natural rock formations known as Fairy Chimneys, turns a beautiful bright green during this time. Hot air balloon rides over the region allow for stunning views at sunrise and sunset.

Spring is also a great time to dip in Pamukkale's thermal pools in the Büyük Menderes Valley. Pleasant temperatures mean you can spend time outdoors comfortably, and the pools also tend to be less crowded in spring than in summer.

Autumn is also a great time to visit to experience the temperature changing from warm to cool and watch the leaves change colour. In Cappadocia, the views change from green to yellow and red in this season, and they are great to take in as you fly above the rocks in the soft sunlight. Head to Artvin in northeastern Turkey for views of tall mountains bathed in fiery red and their glowing reflections in beautiful alpine lakes. Alternatively, camp out at Yedigöller National Park amidst fir, oak, maple and hazelnut trees.

When is the best time to visit Istanbul?

Istanbul is a popular tourist destination year-round, but visiting during the shoulder seasons (avoiding the hottest months of July and August ) makes sightseeing in the city much more bearable. Some of Istanbul's grandest attractions require spending some time outside, while one of the best things to do in Istanbul is to wander aimlessly through historic neighbourhoods, so April, May, June, September, and October are best to soak up the sun without feeling too uncomfortable. The Istanbul Tulip Festival typically takes place through April, so head to Emirgan Park (which overlooks the Bosphorus), Gulhane Park or Camlica Hill to enjoy swathes of bright red, purple, yellow, white and pink tulips in bloom.

Temperatures in Turkey throughout the year

When is the low season in Turkey?

Winter (December to February) brings icy cold temperatures and snowfall to some parts of Turkey. Accommodation rates drop in these cold months when far fewer tourists fly in. Hot air balloon rides are far less frequent in Cappadocia during this time, but the region is a different kind of beautiful blanketed in pristine white snow. For those who enjoy winter adventures, this is a great time to ski in Turkey. Most travellers don’t think of Turkey as a skiing destination . Still, several ski resorts are in its high-elevation regions, including Mount Erciyes, the Ilgaz Ski Center in northern Anatolia, Davraz Ski Center in Isparta and the Sarikamiş Ski Center in Kars. Pamukkale is also covered in snow in these months, but if you can brave the cold, the natural heat of the springs is a rewarding winter experience with breathtaking views. Best of all, visiting during the low and shoulder seasons means discounted rates at some of the best hotels in Turkey .

When is the rainy season in Turkey?

Turkey does not have a “rainy season” – at least not in the tropical sense, as it is applied to destinations such as Thailand and Indonesia . However, after months of almost guaranteed sunshine between May and September, the drizzle begins at the end of the summer season, lasting between November and March through much of the country. December is officially the wettest month, and it snows in some areas of northern Turkey and Istanbul around this time.

How many days are enough for a trip to Turkey?

Give yourself seven to ten days to explore the region in Turkey. A shorter four-to-five-day trip should suffice if you plan to visit Istanbul, but if you plan to visit Cappadocia, Antalya, Pamukkale and more, you will need at least ten days to two weeks.

Where is hot in Europe in October? 13 sizzling destinations

Do Brits need a visa for Turkey?

British citizens travelling to Turkey on a British passport do not need a visa for holidays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. A visa is only required for visits exceeding 90 days within a 90-day period or for non-tourism-focused visits, i.e., for work or study in the country.

Fall Foliage Tracker—This Map Helps Plan Trips To U.S. National Parks

Fall can be the best time to travel, particularly to visit the U.S. national parks in all their leafy glory, and this Fall Foliage Prediction map will help get timings right for peak beauty.

The Fall Foliage Prediction map

CNN Travel calls September and October the best time of year to go anywhere, and with good reason if you're not tied to an academic schedule. It's when airfares start to drop, there are fewer crowds, and the weather is usually much more amenable.

Hayley Berg, lead economist at travel platform Hopper, told CNN that for this reason, it's a perfect time to hit a bucket list travel destination, with prices maybe 20-30% less than in July and August.

So, if you've been dreaming of traveling to the U.S. national parks, now is the perfect time to book a trip. Although reservations may be required in the summer months, U.S. national parks now much more accessible. For instance, Washington's Mount Rainier National Park ends the need for reservations on 2 September, and Yosemite only requires them in the Fall on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

And if you're wondering how to book a trip to get the timing right for perfect fall foliage beauty, here's a map that may help.

SmokyMountain.com is a travel brand promoting the Smoky Mountain region that releases a Fall Foliage map every year to help tourists map the peak foliage across the U.S. at given points throughout fall. Travelers can scroll the weeks at the bottom to work out when foliage will peak in key destinations across the U.S. Visitors to these regions can also help improve the map by reporting foliage in that area. The latter has been instrumental in improving data on fall foliage throughout the years.

The Fall foliage Prediction map

According to the map, the following places will peak at the following times:

  • Tennessee fall foliage is expected to peak in late October (21 October to 25 October, to be precise).
  • Vermont fall foliage will peak around early October, but the southern part of the state will still be colorful until late October.
  • Washington fall foliage: the leaves will change here mid to late October, with the peak ending at the end of the month.
  • New York fall foliage will see peak season 7-11 October.
  • Maine fall foliage–in the northern half of Maine, you can expect near-peak fall color around the end of September. The ultimate peak should start around 7 October.
  • Maryland fall foliage begins to change into its stunning yellow colors in mid-October, peaking around 21-25 October.
  • New Hampshire fall foliage–upper New Hampshire starts to peak around late September, but the peak will arrive in the majority of counties around the second week of October. Expect the best colors at their peak between 30 September and 4 October (in the northern half) and 7 to 11 October (in the southern portion).
  • Rhode Island fall foliage will start to peak around 7 October and last until 14 October.
  • North Carolina fall foliage will see the leaves begin changing in around mid-October, but peak color is expected in most of the state between 28 October and 1 November.
  • Oregon fall foliage: the full displays of color will occur from mid-to-late October, such as 21 October to 1 November.
  • Colorado fall foliage: the map predicts a change of color in the Boulder and Denver areas around the end of September, with a peak around mid-to-late October.
  • Michigan fall foliage will reach its peak in early October.
  • Indiana fall foliage: Indiana's northern area will begin to see peak fall foliage around mid to late October, with the lower portion of the state reaching past its peak around the beginning of November.
  • Massachusetts fall foliage: Similar to other northern states in the area, Massachusetts's fall foliage is expected to peak around early October (7 October to 14 October).
  • Virginia fall foliage: The leaves in Virginia will reach their near peak around 21 October, with the ultimate peak occurring from 28 October to 1 November.

Now that the timings are more precise, it might be time to book that Fall trip.

SmokyMountains.com's Fall Foliage Prediction map uses historical and forecast temperature and precipitation, the type of tree known to be prominent in that geographic region, the historical trends in that area, and user data.
