Motorcycle - Bike Tours in India

There are bikers who never get tired of riding on their motorcycles, and like taking them to distant places on long journeys. If you are one of them, then motorcycle tours in India will come across as a blessing for you. Such tours are organised by reputed travel agencies, so everything from the destinations to camping are well taken care of. On some tours, you are provided with bikes while on the others, you are required to bring your own. One thing that is common in all these excursions is that they all go through places, which are highly picturesque and replete with rich heritage. Some stretches of the roads will be well-made, allowing for smooth rides; whereas others will be rocky and narrow, making the journey thrilling.

Destinations and Popular Motorcycle Routes in India

Among the most popular motorcycle tours in India are the ones that will take you to Ladakh. Another highly toured route in the country by bikes is through the scenic West Coast.

• Ladakh Bike Tour

There are two separate expeditions that you can take through Ladakh. One of them is 12-day long, and the other stretches for over a fortnight.

The 12-day tour starts from Manali, and its first phase takes you 115 km along the Beas River to Jispa in the Lahaul and Spiti district. On the next morning, you cross Baralacha La as you travel for roughly 116 km to reach the amazing valley of Sarchu. The ensuing section of the trip makes you drive through three more high mountain passes to reach Leh, which is the administrative centre of the Ladakh region. Here you have an entire day to sightsee and acclimatise before going any higher in the mountains.

After resting and sightseeing, you journey through Khardung La, claimed to be the highest drivable road in the world, to the valley of the Nubra River. From the valley, you drive back to Leh, and from the latter, make for the breathtaking lake named Pangong Tso. Further on the expedition, you make your way back to Manali through Leh, Sarchu and Keylong.

Most of the itinerary for the 15-day trip is the same, with the only difference being in the order of some places that you pass through. There are some destinations here that are not covered in the shorter trip. When you arrive in Leh from Manali via Sarchu, you will not travel over Khardung La, but to Pangong Tso first.

You will visit Nubra Valley after you return from the lake to Leh, and then come back here from the valley. Post reaching Leh and resting here at night, you will travel deeper into Ladakh and arrive in the town Kargil. You will then continue driving further into the region and make for Dras, the coldest place in the country. From Dras, you will come down to Srinagar, the state capital of Jammu and Kashmir, where you have one day to explore the city. After sightseeing in Srinagar, you will drive down the Himalayas and arrive in Jammu, which lies in the Northern Plains, and from here you will make for Delhi.

• Spiti Bike Tour

There are 2 different expeditions that you can take through Lahaul and Spiti Valley. One is from The Hindustan Tibet Road, crossing beautiful places like Shimla, Reckong Peo and Kalpa! The other one is via Manali, crossing Rohtang Pass and the Kunzum Pass.

Delhi to Spiti Motorbike Expedition via Manali Manali route starts from New Delhi and takes you all the way to Manali, the enchanting Chandratal Lake, and then to the distinct Spiti Valley. Start your tour from New Delhi and then stop at Manali. The next day you will head to the beautiful Chandratal Lake and camp there overnight. Next stop will be Kaza, the largest settlement in the Spiti Valley. Explore Kaza, Tabo and Nako for the next 3 days. The next will be the alluring Kinnaur Valley, where you can admire the Kinnaur Kailash Range from the valley of Kalpa. Crossing the last village in Himachal Pradesh, Chitkul, head to Sangla to stay overnight in camps. Ride through the Jalori Jot Pass and reach Shoja. Reach Manali again crossing Tirthan Valley and then return to New Delhi.

Delhi Spiti Motorbike Expedition This routes takes you through the National Highway - 22, which is one of the most scenic and adventures routes in Himachal Pradesh. Travel to one of the most remote Valleys in India through Shimla, Reckong Peo, Kaza, Chandratal and then return to New Delhi Via Manali. Enter the gateway to Kinnaur Valley, Reckong Peo, and then through Nako enter the beautiful Spiti Valley. Explore Kaza and the wonderful places around it. Visit Key Monastery which is located near the Spiti River and get an amazing view of the valley from the monastery. Next day, cross the mighty Kunzum Pass to reach the ever-changing Chandratal Lake. The lake is known for changing its color from dusk to dawn. Spend a day at Manali and then return to New Delhi.

Ganga Motorbike Expedition Over the course of 7 days the route takes you through unexplored villages and towns of Uttarakhand along the River Ganga. The adventure starts from Dehradun in Uttarakhand and takes you to Mori on the first day. Enjoy the views of Dayara Bugyal and Himalayan Ranges on on the way to Harsil on the second day. Stay at Harsil for 2 days and ride to the Gangotri Temple. Explore the town and head to Rishikesh stopping for a day at New Tehri for a night. The best part about Ganga Motorbike Expedition is that you end the trip on a very adventurous note! Rafting on Ganges before heading back will be awesome!

Experience Motorcycle Bike Tours in India

• West Coast Bike Tour

This is a 12-day trip, taking you through some of the most beautiful places in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and also touching the states of Karnataka and Goa. You will start driving from Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, and travel roughly 425 km to the temple town of Madurai.

On arriving here, you visit the famous Meenakshi Amman Shrine, and the next morning drive to Kovalam. While riding for around 330 km to Kovalam, you will pass Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of mainland India. In Kovalam, you can relax on seafronts or enjoy water sports at your own expense. The coming phase of the trip takes you to Alleppey, with the sea and green fields lining the highway on opposite sides. From Alleppey, you will cut across the enthralling Western Ghats to arrive in the famous hill station of Munnar.

Your next stop will be Ooty, another popular hill town, where you will spend the whole day. You will make for Gokarna from Ooty as the former has beautiful and secluded beaches for you to relax on. After staying here an entire day, you will drive to Goa, where your trip will end.

Best Time to Go for Motorcycle Tours in India

The best time for undertaking motorcycle tours in India depends on the route you want to follow. For Ladakh and Spiti Valley tours, the summer season between May and September is perfect as the weather will be pleasant and you will not encounter loads of snow. On the other hand, the winter season or months of February and March are ideal for the West Coast tour due to cool weather and less humidity.

What is the riding like on a motorcycle tour in India?

Riding motorcycles in India is a challenge in and of itself: out here, the traffic is often unpredictable and the mountain roads do not boast silky smooth tarmac every mile of the way. However, rough road and off-road conditions mean you’re in for a serious adventure and the capable Royal Enfields (the #1 choice of motorcycle in India) will happily tackle everything and anything from paved routes to gravel trails. Finally, don’t forget to carry cash when you’re going on a guided motorcycle tour of India: while some upscale restaurants and hotels in the major cities will accept cards, cash is king in the more rural areas of India.

When is the best time of year to ride on a motorcycle tour in India?

For Northern India motorcycle tours, the months of April through to August are the best as the weather is warmer and more pleasant than in the early spring and fall. Some of the high mountain passes may be snowed in as late as May, however, so prepare for all kinds of weather and temperatures!

In terms of riding gear, we usually recommend four-season gear as you will be crossing mountain passes at extremely high altitude, and even during the summer months, some of the mountain roads may see snow.

5 reasons to ride in India

1. the himalayas.

Need we say more? The biggest mountain range in the world, the Himalayas are so striking and so diverse in the landscapes they form and the cultures they host it feels like an entirely different world. In Sanskrit, Himalaya means “The Snow Abode”, but these mountains are much more than just snowy peaks: out here, the mountain roads twist and curl around jaw-dropping passes and gorges, shoot across windswept deserts at high altitude and dive down into lush green valleys isolated from the rest of the world. The birthplace of Buddhist religion and culture, the Himalayas are home to incredibly diverse nations, tribes & communities, and riding motorcycles in India, you’ll get to experience the best of it all.

2. The Roads

The Himalayan routes are hands-down among the most spectacular motorcycling roads on the planet. Hugging the mountains with dizzying sheer drops, crossing some of the highest passes in the world and meandering through beautiful valleys and canyons, the roads in India are guaranteed to offer up a decent mix of challenge and pure motorcycling bliss as you lean into yet another corner swinging around a precarious cliff or skirting an edge of a gorge! Motorcycle adventures in India offer so many incredible sweepers, tight hairpins and countless switchbacks you may forget how to ride in a straight line altogether.

3. The Adventure

While the Himalayas in India are more accessible than in Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan put together, the riding here is adventure in its purest form. On a guided motorcycle in India, expect no two days to be the same as you will traverse wildly contrasting landscapes, experience different road conditions and immerse yourself in the Indian culture every step of the way.

4. The Culture

Speaking of culture: Northern India is a vibrant melting pot of different communities, faiths, and influences. Unlike the busy resort towns and touristy beaches of Kerala and Goa or the pure mayhem and madness of Mumbai and New Delhi, the North is more Tibetan than Indian. The locals here are friendly and inquisitive, but Ladakh is all about the ancient Buddhist temples, monasteries and ways of life rather than the colourful chaos that is the rest of the country. During your motorcycle tour in India, you’ll visit some of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in the world, experience the local hospitality and feel like you’re entering a different, quieter world where the traditions and heritage roots go millennia deep.

5. The Food

If you’re a fan of Asian food, your motorcycle holiday in India will offer delicious experiences on a daily basis. In Ladakh, the two must-try local dishes are the momos (a sort of a dumpling with meat and veggie filling) and Chhurpi (a hard yak milk butter cheese perfect for snacking on the go). If you’re feeling adventurous, be sure to try gur-gur chai, a butter tea locals drink to battle altitude sickness and to stay warm at high elevations: it’s an acquired taste, as the tea is literally a mix of milk, butter, salt, and tea leaves, but it’s a great way to keep your energy levels up as you tackle those mountain roads and passes aboard your motorcycle.

This way, you can look forward to your trip without any last-minute hassles.

India’s e-Tourist Visa system offers three types of visas for travellers wishing to visit the country, catering to different durations and types of visits. Here’s a brief overview:

Avoid High-Altitude Sickness

To avoid high-altitude sickness, here are a few steps you can take to prepare and mitigate the risks:

1. Stay Hydrated : Drink water in small sips every 10 minutes. Carrying a hydration bag can make it easier to stay hydrated without having to stop frequently. Hydration helps your body adjust to the altitude more efficiently.

2. Consider Medication : Diamox is a medication that can help prevent altitude sickness. However, it’s important to consult with your doctor before your trip, especially if you have any allergies or medical conditions. Your doctor can advise on the appropriate dosage and whether it’s safe for you to take.

3. Eat a High Potassium Diet: Foods high in potassium, such as bananas, avocados, and potatoes, can help your body adjust to high altitudes. A diet rich in these foods before and during your trip can be beneficial.

4. Oxygen Support : We carry oxygen cylinders for emergency use. Our guide is trained to recognize the symptoms of oxygen deprivation and will provide oxygen from a 10-15 litre big cylinder or a 2-litre portable cylinder if required. It’s critical to listen to your guide and communicate any discomfort you may be experiencing.

5. Stay Positive and Don’t Panic : A good mindset is crucial when dealing with high altitudes. Being aware that you’re in a high-altitude area with less oxygen is important, but it’s equally important not to panic. Stay positive and trust in your preparation and resources. Your guide will instruct you on what to do and how to handle different sections of your journey effectively. Listening to your guide and maintaining a positive outlook can significantly improve your ability to adapt and enjoy your high-altitude adventure.

6. Expedition Program Plan: The expedition program has been customized in such a way that we will gradually ascend from lower altitudes to higher altitudes day by day. This approach helps in acclimatizing to the changing oxygen levels and reducing the risk of high-altitude sickness. Gradual ascent allows your body time to adjust to the altitude changes, making the journey safer and more enjoyable. This methodical increase in altitude is designed to enhance your body’s adaptation process, ensuring a smoother and more comfortable experience as you reach higher elevations.

Remember, preparation and acclimatization are key. Allow your body time to adjust to the altitude by taking it easy the first few days and being mindful of your physical condition.

Is Setellite Phone Allow?

No, the use of satellite phones is strictly prohibited as you will be in a very sensitive area. Satellite phones can pose security concerns and are often restricted by Government in certain regions, especially sensitive or protected areas. It’s important to respect these rules to avoid any legal issues or security risks. Always check and adhere to the local laws and guidelines regarding communication devices in any area you plan to visit.

Budget Considerations for Motorcycle Tours Let’s talk about the nitty-gritty of budgeting for your epic motorcycle tour in India. Here are some key factors to consider to ensure you get the most bang for your buck:

1. Tour Package vs. DIY:  First things first, decide whether you want to book a tour package or plan your adventure independently. While guided tours offer convenience and peace of mind, they can be more expensive than DIY options where you handle logistics like accommodations, meals, and route planning yourself.

2. Tour Duration:  The duration of your tour will have a significant impact on your budget. Longer tours typically come with higher costs for accommodations, fuel, and other expenses. Consider how many days you want to spend on the road and plan your budget accordingly.

3. Accommodation Options:  From budget-friendly hostels to luxury resorts, India offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit every budget. If you’re looking to save money, consider staying in budget hotels, guesthouses, or homestays along your route.

4. Fuel and Maintenance:  Don’t forget to factor in the cost of fuel and motorcycle maintenance when budgeting for your tour. Fuel prices can vary depending on location, so research average prices and estimate your fuel consumption based on your planned route.

5. Food and Dining:  Food is a big part of any travel budget, and India offers a tantalizing array of culinary delights to tempt your taste buds. To save money, opt for local eateries and street food stalls, where you can enjoy authentic Indian cuisine at a fraction of the cost of upscale restaurants.

6. Emergency Fund:  It’s always wise to set aside a portion of your budget for unexpected expenses or emergencies. Whether it’s a flat tire, a minor repair, or unforeseen medical costs, having a safety net can provide peace of mind and ensure you’re prepared for whatever the road throws your way.

7. Currency Exchange Rates:  Keep an eye on currency exchange rates if you’re traveling from abroad. Fluctuations in exchange rates can impact the cost of your trip, so consider exchanging currency in advance or using a credit card with favorable exchange rates.

By considering these budget considerations, you can plan a motorcycle tour that not only fulfills your adventurous spirit but also fits within your financial means. So go ahead, rev up your engines, and get ready for the ride of a lifetime without breaking the bank!

Selecting the Right Tour Operator Planning a motorcycle tour in India but feeling overwhelmed by the options? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! In this section, we’ll guide you through the process of selecting the right tour operator to ensure your motorcycle adventure is nothing short of spectacular.

Choosing the right tour operator can make all the difference in the success and enjoyment of your trip. With so many companies offering motorcycle tours in India, it’s essential to do your research and find a reputable operator that aligns with your preferences and expectations.

Whether you’re looking for a guided tour with all the bells and whistles or prefer the freedom of a self-guided adventure, the right tour operator will help you navigate the roads, discover hidden gems, and create unforgettable memories along the way.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Tour Operator Choosing the right tour operator is key to ensuring a smooth and unforgettable experience. Here are some important factors to consider when making your decision:

1. Reputation and Reviews:   Before booking a tour, take the time to research the tour operator’s reputation and read reviews from past customers. Look for feedback on the quality of their services, the condition of their motorcycles, and the professionalism of their guides. Websites like TripAdvisor, Google Reviews, and motorcycle forums can be valuable resources for gathering information.

2. Experience and Expertise:  Opt for tour operators with a proven track record of organizing successful motorcycle tours in India . Consider how long they’ve been in business, their knowledge of the local terrain, and the expertise of their tour guides. Experienced operators are better equipped to handle unexpected challenges and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for their riders.

3. Tour Itinerary and Inclusions:  Review the tour itinerary carefully to ensure it aligns with your interests and preferences. Consider factors such as the duration of the tour, the destinations included, and the activities offered along the way. Pay attention to what is included in the tour package, such as accommodations, meals, fuel, and support vehicles, to ensure there are no hidden costs.

4. Safety Measures:   Safety should always be a top priority when choosing a tour operator. Inquire about the safety measures and protocols they have in place, including the condition of their motorcycles, the qualifications of their guides, and their emergency response procedures. Make sure they provide adequate insurance coverage for riders and support staff.

5. Group Size and Dynamics:   Consider the size and composition of the tour group, as well as the dynamics between riders. Some operators specialize in small-group tours, offering a more intimate and personalized experience, while others cater to larger groups. Think about your preferences for group dynamics and social interaction when selecting a tour.

6. Flexibility and Customization:  Look for tour operators that offer flexibility and customization options to tailor the experience to your preferences. Whether you want to modify the itinerary, upgrade your accommodations, or add on extra activities, choose a company that is willing to accommodate your needs and preferences.

By carefully considering these factors, you can select a tour operator that meets your expectations and ensures an unforgettable motorcycle adventure in India. So do your research, ask questions, and choose wisely – the road awaits!

Classic Bike Adventure – Asia’s Motorcycle Pioneers

Driven by our passion for riding and the desire to explore exotic India, we founded Classic Bike Adventure in Goa in February 1989. After a short startup phase in southern India, we launched our first tours in the Indian Himalayas – in Himachal Pradesh, and shortly thereafter in Ladakh, the majestic highlight of the Roof of the World. Nepal soon followed, then Tibet, Bhutan and the newly created Himalayan state of Uttarakhand. Classic Bike Adventure was one of the first motorcycle tour operators in India – and with its professional travel organization, it not only broke new ground as a pioneer, it also set standards. In the late nineties, we added other Asian countries to the Classic Bike Adventure travel program, experiencing unforgettable adventures on the road on tours through Tibet, Myanmar, Bhutan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Laos and Vietnam. Over the past 30 years, more than 5,000 enthusiastic riders have been on more than 600 Classic Bike Adventure tours, making us one of the largest operators of guided motorcycle tours in Asia. The world, and with it Asia, has changed a lot since we set out to discover India in the wild 1980s. Our routes have evolved over time as we strive to keep them up to date and constantly adapt them to local conditions and our own high standards. ... If there’s no other way, we’d rather put a tour on hold for a while – for example until massive road construction projects have been completed – and not resume until the route is once again truly a joy to ride. Operating a tour in chaotic conditions just because there’s a market for it won’t make us – or you – happy. Our fleet has changed as well: in addition to our 35 classic Royal Enfield Bullets that we mainly ride in India, Nepal and Bhutan, relying on them in rugged mountains, deserts, forests, steppes, valleys, gorges and crossing the world’s highest passes, we also deploy enduros such as the BMW GS series and other makes, depending on the country and the specific challenges of the tour. The one thing that has always stayed the same over the years is our urge to travel: our passion for discovery, adventure, spectacular landscapes, and meeting new people and experiencing their cultures and customs. And all this, of course, while meeting our strict criteria for safety, service, good overnight accommodations, excellent routes, technically flawless motorcycles and experienced guides. With this outlook on work and life and our decades of experience, we want to give you the adventure of a lifetime! Are you ready?

The Classic Bike Adventure Travel Concept

Our Travel Concept begins with your travel wishes and booking.

You can rely on us to field all of your questions by email or phone. Dependable information and prompt answers, as well as transparent terms and conditions, are a matter of course for us. We live in India and China and have our offices there, so our advice is founded on our day-to-day local experience.

As a direct organizer, we’re your one-stop contact for advice, booking, tour management and local services. Our presence on the ground guarantees the same high standards on all of our tours and in all of the countries in which we operate. Let us know what you you’re looking for and we’ll set you up with the perfect experience.

To make the decision easy, we’ve classified our motorcycle tours.

Our four travel styles give you a frame of reference on the number of points of interest and unpaved roads that await you, how challenging the tour will be, and how many hours in the saddle you can expect every day. This will help you to book the tour that’s right for you. More information about the individual icons and our concept can be found here .

Four Ways To Travel

bike tours in india

Perfect for adventurers: our adventure tours are carefully prepared, yet they still have scope for unforeseen events. Rugged, high-altitude terrain, the forces of nature or the remoteness of the region can always pose challenges. The journey is the destination: team spirit, stamina, off-road experience and a positive attitude toward unforeseen situations are the best ingredients to ensure a successful tour. Simple overnight stays in exciting, remote places and rides on rough tracks add to a real sense of adventure.

bike tours in india

Discovery tours offer a good balance of daily mileage, beautiful scenery and the sheer joy of riding on carefully selected country and mountain roads. Experience a country and its people, customs and cultures, as well as sights such as temples and the ruins of half-forgotten cities from the saddle of a motorcycle – without sacrificing the comforts of a beautiful hotel or resort at the end of the day.

bike tours in india

Motorcycling and leisure go hand-in-hand on our laid-back tours. We leave plenty of time to unwind in selected hotels, mountain resorts with spas, or beach bungalows. Relaxation is a priority – as is riding, of course. The daily distances are manageable, the terrain less demanding and there’s more time for activities, checking out the sights, or simply kicking back and enjoying life.

bike tours in india

Interested in a private trip with good friends or family? Are you looking for luxury, or a ride on the rugged side? We’ll be happy to advise you in detail, as all private trips can be shortened, extended and adapted to your wishes with regard to the route and hotels. This icon indicates that we can tailor the tour to suit you.

What to Expect on the Guided Motorbike Tour

All of our guided motorcycle tours be they in India, Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet, elsewhere in Asia or on our Cyprus motorcycle tour , are led by guides with a minimum of several years of experience. With up to 15 years under their belts, our most seasoned guides are at home on the most demanding tours and can handle the most adverse circumstances with confidence. You’re in the very best hands – our guides are pros!

Our guides all have their own styles, of course, but one thing they all have in common that they like to encourage “free riding”. In other words, the guide doesn’t lead the way, but arranges meeting points ahead for the group. This has the advantage that you can pull over for a photo at any time and aren’t stuck following the tour guide – unless that’s your preference.

Every motorbike tour is escorted by a support vehicle to carry your bags and offer pillion passengers a comfortable alternative. That way you can easily visit places of interest – a special restaurant in the evening, for example – after reaching the day’s destination and parking your bike for the night.

All of our tours are accompanied by experienced mechanics. If a bike can’t be fixed quickly by the roadside, the mechanic will repair it in the evening after our arrival at the hotel. We always carry a spare bike, so you can keep riding right away without missing a thing.

And if for some reason you can’t ride or don’t want to, our mechanic will gladly take over your bike until you’re up to riding again.

Comfort is an important aspect for us. Wherever possible, we like to stay in beautiful, hand-picked hotels and guesthouses that have their own unique charm. Of course, this is not always possible in remote areas, in which case we always choose the best available option. But even a simple camp of wooden huts with a fantastic view – like the one at Lake Pangong on our Ladakh tour – can be a real highlight.

Whichever tour category you choose – Adventure, Discovery, Laid-Back or Custom – one thing is certain: you can count on our travel concept for true adventure and unforgettable Royal Enfield motorcycle tours.

For those wanting still more we have the Goa to Kerala Motorcycle Tour with a longer route covering more than 2,100 kilometers.

In addition, several Himalayan Motorcycle Adventure Tours offer you the best of Indian Himalayas.

The 3 Lakes and 7 Passes of Ladakh and Nubra Valley Himalayan Motorcycle Tour covers all of the highlights of the ancient Buddhist kingdom of Ladakh, as well as the three most beautiful Himalayan lakes in the border region to Tibet. All are located at altitudes of more than 4,500 meters – including the highest motorable road in the world. This guided Leh Ladakh motorbike trip includes rides across several passes that are extremely high by western standards including 5,608 meters altitude at Khardung La pass – it’s the ultimate challenge for bikes and bikers and is sometimes rather appropriately referred to as the “Highway to Heaven”!

The Spiti Valley “Little Tibet” Motorcycle Tour offers you the opportunity to witness the enchanting landscape of Tibet in the Indian Himalayas, which is just as spectacular as in Tibet proper – and perhaps even more adventurous and challenging due to the road conditions in this remote valley which hosts some of the oldest monasteries, spectacularly built on top of windswept mountains. Beside our well established adventures, we also offer new rides. Our brand new Himalayan Motorcycle Tour , Into the Wilds of Zanskar & Ladakh Tourwill be inducted for the very first time in 2020. This amazing tour will feature some of the most breathtaking gravel roads of India and some of the most dangerous roads on the planet. We have also conducted Rajasthan Motorcycle Tours in the past, and hope to have one again in our itinerary.

But see for yourself which other adventures in India we have to offer. We have guided motorcycle tours to suit every rider, regardless if you look for a laid-back tour, a discovery tour or a mind blowing adventure.

Latin america, exploring india by bicycle.

It’s said that if you can travel in India, you can travel anywhere. Famous for its extremes, the country offers everything in between and is home to a glittering tapestry of natural and cultural diversity. Stark, spiritual, and fascinatingly intense, India is the vivid dream that you awake from only after you’ve left.

Colorful Cultures

Ancient and dynamic India captivates visitors today as it has for millennia. A land of over one billion people, it pulsates to the beat of a medley of vibrant cultures. Experience a colorful local festival. Sample saris and spices at an open market. Witness the spirituality that radiates from the many temples and their worshippers. With such palpable energy, traveling through the country is never a dull experience.

India cycling tours

Natural Diversity

In India’s north, the Himalayan range recedes from the sky and fizzles into the vast plain of the south. Along the way are dense jungles, deserts, and lush wetlands. The country’s many rivers weave and undulate to the tropical beaches along the coasts. Often overshadowed by its culture, India’s natural richness only enhances its unique and iconic beauty.

Reviews from our friends

How do i know which india bicycle tour is right for me.

We have several bike tours in India. Choosing the right India bike tour boils down to answering three questions:

Where in India do you want to bike?

The best cycling in India typically happens in the following regions:

  • North India - Rajasthan
  • South India - Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Goa
  • Northeast India - Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya
  • Himalayas - Uttarakhand and Ladakh

What kind of experiences do you have in mind?

Here’s a quick checklist to help you narrow down your choices:

  • Beaches - Head to South India
  • Wildlife - South India for the best overall experience. Assam for the one-horned rhino. Uttarakhand for tigers, and Rajasthan for birding, camels, and leopards
  • Taj Mahal - Rajasthan/North India
  • Forts and Palaces - Rajasthan
  • Deserts and Oases - Rajasthan
  • Tea Plantations - South India/Sikkim/Assam (northeast India)
  • Spectacular Temples - South India
  • Mountains - Sikkim/Uttarakhand/Ladakh

How much time do you have on your hands?

Our India bike tours vary in duration from 4 to 17 days.

Once you’ve got answers to these questions, you can pick from among the several tours we have in each region of India.

1. Choosing the Best Rajasthan Bike Tour

If you want to visit the Taj Mahal, experience authentic Indian rural life, shop in bustling bazaars, and soak in slices of India’s ancient and medieval history, our Rajasthan tours are your best bet.

However, Rajasthan itself is a region roughly the size of Germany, and there are plenty of ways to explore it on bike.

If you want to spend 13-14 days cycling north India with an itinerary that includes Rajasthan, Agra (Taj Mahal), and Delhi, we suggest the following two tours:

  • Exotic India Bike Tour

If you’ve got a time horizon of 7-8 days, and do not want to include Jaipur, Agra or Delhi with your Rajasthan tour, the following two tours might be right for you:

  • Colourful Rajasthan Luxury Bike Tour
  • Best of Rajasthan Bike Tour

If you only want to bike the famous Golden Triangle, which includes Jaipur, Agra, and Delhi, while incorporating a tiger safari and a bike ride in a bird sanctuary, we suggest the following tour:

  • Golden Triangle Bike Tour

2. Choosing the Best South India Bike Tour

If you want to bike through lush green forests, verdant tea gardens, relax at beautiful beaches, ride past herds of elephants, and bike along India’s splendid coastline, then our south India tours are what you’re looking for.

To better help you choose the south India bike tour best suited to your needs, we’ve classified our tours according to the highlight and the theme that best defines each tour. Keep in mind that each tour has plenty more to offer apart from this theme.

Wildlife If you’re a wildlife enthusiast who wants to experience at close quarters the wildlife India is famous for, the following tour is a good choice for you:

  • Wild South Luxury Bike Tour : This is the only south India bike tour that does not touch the coast.

Coast and Beaches If you want the coast and beaches to be the highlight of your south India bike tour, the following tours might be right for you:

  • Coast to Coast Bike Tour Both these tours start from Kerala on India’s west coast and end at Chennai on India’s east coast.

Goa If you’re interested in combining a southern India cycling experience with the famous beach resort destination of Goa, the following tours might interest you:

  • Bombay to Goa Bike Tour : This tour starts from Bombay, India's financial capital and the home of Bollywood befpre heading south to Goa, all the while staying close to the coast.
  • Bangalore to Goa Bike Tour : This tour covers the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi, the beautiful coffee growing highlands of Karnataka, and sandy beaches in Goa.
  • Enchanting Goa Bike Tour : This is a 5-day tour within Goa, covering its beaches, churches, and natural wonders.
  • Mysore to Goa by Gravel Bike : This tour covers beautiful palaces in Mysore, 1000-year temples, coffee plantations, and Goa's beautiful beaches.

Kerala If you want to explore the southern state of Kerala, often called “God’s own country” for its pristine beauty and rich culture, then the following tours might be of interest to you:

  • Classic Kerala Luxury Bike Tour , a complete Kerala luxury tour.
  • Kerala Escapade Bike Tour , a complete Kerala tour.
  • Kerala Backwaters Bike Tour . This is a short tour with a focus on backwaters, a unique ecosystem of lagoons, lakes, canals, and rivers that flow into the sea.
  • Kerala in Style: Bike, Hike and Kayak . This is a multi-sport tour that combines different adventure activities.

Complete South India If you want to explore all that south India has to offer, including its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, its spectacular temples, its wildlife, and its beautiful coastline, then the following tour would be a good fit:

  • Southern India Sojourn Bike Tour : This tour covers the three major south Indian states — Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. At 17 days, this is also our longest India cycling tour.

3. Choosing the Best Northeast India Bike Tour

Northeast India offers a little explored, yet stunningly beautiful side of India. We have the following three tours in northeast India:

Splendid Sikkim Bike Tour : Ride in the shadow of Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world, explore Buddhist monasteries and bike through plantations of the famous Darjeeling tea.

Arunachal and Assam Bike Tour : Your chance to meet the endangered one-horned rhinoceros in the wild and explore the single-largest tea growing region in the world.

Enthralling Meghalaya Bike Tour : Bike through the unspoiled beauty of the “Scotland of the East”, and visit the wettest place on earth, Mawsynram.

4. Choosing the Best Himalayas Bike Tour

If you want to explore the Indian Himalayas, we have the following two tours:

High in the Himalayas Bike Tour : Bike through Ladakh, an extension of the Tibetan plateau, located 3,500m (12,000 ft) above the sea level, and visit Khardung La, the highest motorable pass on earth.

Pristine Uttarakhand Bike Tour : Ride through charming colonial-era hill stations and get a chance to spot tigers at the famous Jim Corbett National park.

What Is the Best Time of the Year to Go On a Cycling Tour in India?

Given India’s vast geographical spread, the best time for a bike tour in India depends on where you’re headed.

Rajasthan and South India

Fall to spring (October to March) is the best time to visit Rajasthan and South India. The temperature varies between 5°C to 25°C (41°F to 77°F), depending on the specific month and the altitude of the place you’re in.

The same applies to all other places in the north Indian plains including Delhi, Agra, Varanasi, Mumbai etc.

Northeast India

The best time to cycle northeast India is fall (September-November) & spring (March-May). Winters can get cold with snow in some of the higher-altitude destinations, while summer and monsoon months see heavy rainfall.

The best time to cycle Ladakh is June to August. Days are warm and sunny with little to no precipitation, although night time temperatures can drop close to freezing point.

Due to its high altitude, Ladakh remains out of bounds for tourists for the rest of the year owing to its inclement weather.

The best time for cycling in Uttarakhand is spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). The temperature during this time varies between 5°C to 25°C (41°F to 77°F) with mostly clear skies, making it ideal for cycling.

Which Are The Best Regions to Experience On an India Cycling Tour?

India is the seventh largest country in the world by land area, and also one of the most geographically diverse countries in the world. This means the cyclist is spoilt for choices when it comes to cycling in India. Here’s a quick primer to the best regions for cycling in India:

North India

The best region for cycling in north India is Rajasthan. It offers a wide variety of terrains including hills, plains, meadows, and deserts so that no two days feel alike.

Rajasthan has the best preserved culture and Indian traditions, complete with colorful traditional costumes, handicrafts, and folk culture. This includes some of the oldest and best preserved forts and palaces in India, several of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Everyday life in rural Rajasthan still continues the way it did centuries ago, so that a Rajasthan bike tour feels like stepping into a time machine and traveling to an era long gone by.

Rajasthan is also home to several national parks with sizable populations of tigers, leopards and other endangered animals.

The main cities in Rajasthan are Udaipur, Jodhpur, and Jaipur, and most Rajasthan cycling tours include these three in the itinerary.

Adjoining Rajasthan is Agra, home of the famous Taj Mahal. Delhi, the capital of India, and itself a major tourist destination on account of its historical monuments and bustling bazaars, is also located in close proximity.

South India

Where north India is sub-tropical and semi-arid, south India is tropical and lush.

The coastal regions are home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, such as those in Goa and Karnataka.

The highlands of south India are covered with lush green tea plantations and dense forests. They’re also home to several charming hill stations dating back to the colonial period, such as Ooty.

Aficionados of colonial-era architecture will especially appreciate Pondicherry, a former French colony that still retains much of its colonial charm, and Goa, a former Portuguese colony with several beautiful churches dating back to the Portuguese era.

The Western Ghats region of south India, covering the states of Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Goa is a biodiversity hotspot with several national parks, offering visitors the chance to encounter wildlife including tigers and elephants while on a bike tour.

South Indian architecture, especially its temples are renowned the world over for their colorful design. South India is also a hub of handicrafts, and is especially known for its ornate textiles.

South Indian cuisine is very different from the north, and incorporates a wider range of spices and ingredients that grow in the tropical south. Seafood is also an important part of south Indian cuisine.

When cycling in south India, visitors are spoilt for choice. This is why we have over 12 tours in south India, and still feel we’ve barely scratched the surface of this beautiful region.

An off-beat cycling destination, Northeast India is the least urbanized and the least populated region of India. Most of it is hilly and covered with dense forests, and it retains much of its pristine, untouched character to this day.

Northeast India is primarily inhabited by tribal communities that have preserved their ancient tribal customs intact, thus offering the visitor a unique chance to interact with their distinct, yet welcoming culture.

The main cycling attractions in the northeast are Sikkim, a mountainous Buddhist province with gorgeous views of snow-clad Himalayan peaks including the Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world.

Assam is another popular cycling destination in northeast India. It is famous for its Assam tea, and as the home to the Kaziranga national park which has the largest population of the endangered one-horned rhinoceros in the world.

Meghalaya is yet another unspoiled destination which offers spectacular views of hills, valleys and rainforests. It is also home to Mawsynram/Cherrapunji, the wettest place on earth. Because of its misty mountains and crystal clear lakes, it is known as the Scotland of the East.

The Himalayas are the highest mountain range on earth, and about 30% of the Himalayan range falls in India.

One of the best places for a cycle tour in the Himalayas is Ladakh. It is a spectacularly barren plateau located some 3500m (12,000 ft) above the sea level that has retained much of its pristine beauty due to its remoteness and its harsh climate. However, Ladakh comes alive in the summer and offers spectacular views to cyclists. Due to its altitude, a cycling tour in Ladakh is recommended only for advanced cyclists.

Uttarakhand is another state nestled in the Himalayas which rewards the persevering cyclist with gorgeous views and beautiful rides. It is home to several colonial era hill stations such as Nainital, Mussoorie, Binsar, and Ranikhet.

It is also an excellent destination for wildlife lovers. The Jim Corbett and Rajaji National Parks in Uttarakhand offer excellent tiger sightings, besides being the northernmost habitat of the Indian elephant.

What Does a Day On Your Bicycle Tour in India Look Like?

At Art of Bicycle Trips, we believe in experiential travel. Our tours combine cycling with cultural activities and nature exploration.

An average day on tour includes 4-5 hours of biking, with the rest of the day reserved for local experiences such as exploring local attractions, interacting with local communities, visiting monuments and museums, learning local crafts, trying local cuisine and more.

Each guided India bike tour is led by an expert trip leader who is also a local. For groups of more than 4 members, we have 2 trip leaders to take care of our guests. ABT trip leaders are a repository of local knowledge, routes, customs, cultures, and cuisines. By employing only local guides, we also help generate employment opportunities for local communities.

All hotels on tour are carefully chosen for their character, comfort, and cuisine, and each hotel becomes an experience in itself that guests can enjoy.

A support vehicle accompanies guests at all times, and if at any point a rider does not feel like biking any further, they can always load their bike and sit in the support van.

We pride ourselves on the degree of customization we provide on each tour, and are always happy to accommodate any special requests from our guests relating to the tour.

What Kind of Bikes Are Provided On Your Bike Tour in India?

We provide the following kinds of bikes for our India bike tours:

1. Hybrid Bikes : Hybrid bikes are available for all our Rajasthan and South India cycling tours, and some tours in northeast India such as the Arunachal and Assam Bike Tour.

2. Gravel Bikes : Gravel bikes are available for specific tours such as the Mysore to Goa by Gravel Bike Tour, and the Coast to Coast Bike Tour.

3. Mountain Bikes : Mountain bikes are available for tours in high-altitude regions, such as the Splendid Sikkim Bike Tour, Enthralling Meghalaya Bike Tour, and High in the Himalayas Bike Tour.

4. E-bikes : All our tours are also available with e-bike upgrades.

All our bikes are of the latest make, well-maintained and in excellent condition.

What Types of Terrain Should I Expect When Biking in India?

1. Rajasthan : Rajasthan consists mostly of flat terrain interspersed with rolling hills and the occasional challenging but short climb. All our Rajasthan tours are classified as either Easy or Moderate , and are great as family cycling tours.

2. South India : South India has its fair share of hills. The steepest climbs are encountered around Ooty (2240m/7350 ft above the sea level) where gradients can be as steep as 12%. The majority of the terrain in our south India bike tours, however, is either flat or consists of rolling hills. Nearly all our south India bike tours are classified as Moderate or Easy to Moderate .

The Bangalore to Goa and the Kerala Backwaters Bike Tour are the exceptions as they consist almost entirely of flat terrain and are classified as Easy . They make for great family cycling tours.

3. Northeast India : Northeast India is generally mountainous and most tours in this region are classified as either Moderate or Challenging . Some tours such as the Assam and Arunachal Bike Tour have plenty of riding on flat terrain.

The Enthralling Meghalaya Bike Tour has mostly rolling hills, while the Splendid Sikkim Bike Tour unfolds over terrain that is situated at an average elevation of 1250m (3933 ft) above the sea level and is meant for riders who enjoy biking in the hills.

4. Himalayas : The Pristine Uttarakhand Bike Tour consists of a few tough climbs along with some flat terrain and some rolling hills. The High in the Himalayas Bike Tour is one of our most challenging routes and is only meant for riders accustomed to high altitude biking.

India Bike Tours — Frequently Asked Questions

Is india safe for cycling.

Yes, India is a fairly safe country for cycling. As of January 2024, the United States Department of State classifies India as a Level 2 destination. This puts it in the same category as most West European countries including France, Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, all of which are classified as Level 2 destinations.

In 2023, India welcomed over 1 million foreign tourists, placing it among the top 10 most visited countries in Asia. Several thousands of these tourists were cyclists, and it is not uncommon to meet other foreign cyclists when biking in India. Cycling is also popular as a means of transport among working class Indians.

However, just like in other low-income countries, petty crimes like theft and snatchings are not uncommon. This is why it is advised to do a guided bike tour in India where a local guide will be with you at all times to ensure your safety.

Is Biking Popular in India?

India is an emerging tourist destination for cycling. Even though millions of Indians still use bicycles for their everyday commutes, cycling as a sport and as a leisure activity has only picked up over the last decade or so.

However, more people are now realizing that India is a unique destination that offers experiences unmatched by any other destination in the world. As a result, cycling in India is increasing in popularity each year.

What Are the Rules for Cycling in India?

Here are a few rules to pay attention to when biking in India:

India is a left hand traffic (LHT) country, a practice common in countries that were formerly a part of the British empire. This means that when cycling in India, riders should stick to the left-side of the road.

Overtaking is done from the right, although cyclists should avoid overtaking as much as possible.

Always follow your trip leader or your support vehicle, whichever is in the lead.

Always wear a helmet while biking.

Use hand signals when turning

Be mindful of stray animals such as dogs, cows, water buffaloes, monkeys, and camels. (yes, India has plenty of these animals sharing the streets with commuters!)

India Bike Tours 2024/2025

India bike tours combine high adventure with cultural experiences. Climb some of the highest roads in the world in the Himalayas, glide past the pretty paddy fields and dreamy backwaters of Kerala, and ride along the enchanting coast of peninsular India. Spiti to Ladakh is one of the most incredible India bike tours — you’ll pass beautiful lakes, fruit orchards, Buddhist monasteries, grazing Himalayan blue sheep, and high-altitude deserts. For a very different desert vibe, head to Rajasthan, where you can cycle through the lake city of Udaipur and get lost-in-the-sand hamlets, crossing magnificent forts, historical palaces, and medieval havelis (traditional Indian mansions). Start your exploration of India’s long, scenic western coastline from Maharashtra and see beautiful beaches like Palolem and quaint villages like Tarkarli. Meghalaya in northeast India is not on the mainstream biking circuit but offers some of the best bike tours.

India Bike Tours

A tourist in Ladakh, viewing the landscape during India bike tours.

Highlights of India bike tours

  • Pedal past coconut farms on the pleasant route from Somnath to Diu, with the option of taking a detour to visit the Gir National Park, home of Asiatic lions.
  • Discover the heart of India, away from the tourist hordes, in the beautiful Maikal Hills. The hills provide a glorious backdrop to a cycling route that passes by jungles, village homes of the local Gond people, and wildlife reserves like Bandhavgarh.
  • Explore famous cities like Delhi-Agra-Jaipur on a Golden Triangle tour and see iconic monuments like the Taj Mahal, Humayun’s Tomb, and Hawa Mahal on some of the best bike tours of India.
  • Cycle through the idyllic coffee plantations of Coorg, cross the spice plantations of Wayanad, lose yourself in the historic city of Mysore, and discover the foothills of the Nilgiri mountains on the superb Bengaluru-Cochin circuit.
  • See terraced paddy fields, tea gardens, and Buddhist monasteries on a bike tour in India in the small, picturesque northeastern state of Sikkim, away from the big cities.

Travel tips for bike tours in India

  • Traffic on Indian roads can be notoriously chaotic — this is true for cities and highways, so it’s important to be very focused no matter which part of the country you’re biking in. But the great thing is you don’t need to stick to the highway; village roads have less traffic, and some of the most scenic cycling routes pass agricultural fields.
  • Since Hindi is spoken by at least 40% of the country (and understood by more), it will be helpful to know a few key phrases before hitting the road, especially in north and central India.
  • Large swathes of India are uncomfortably hot from April to October, so plan your India bike tours accordingly.

Looking for Real Adventure?

Discover the thrill of Adventure.. You will definitely savor the memories of your trip with us for a very long time

Here is a list of frequently asked questions. If your question is not in this list, just contact us .

I have never been on tour before - will I hold everybody up?

No, this is a tour, not a race - whenever there is a group of riders together, you get a wide range of experience and riding abilities. We are quite used to this, and you will never be asked to ride beyond your capabilities. However, you owe it to yourself and the others on tour to be a competent rider and choose a tour within your riding capabilities.

How many people go on tour?

Believe it or not, in the early days, we have toured with just one! We are pleased to say that those days are long gone and numbers now very much depend upon the bookings we receive. However, it is our policy not to run with a large number of bikes.

Which motorcycle would I be riding on your tours?

Depending on the tour you select, it will either be a Royal Enfield 500cc motorcycle or a 411cc Royal Enfield Himalayan dual-sport motorcycle with gears on the left and the brake on the right hand side.

Can I ride my own motorcycle on the tour?

On our tours, we have identical make and model of Royal Enfield motorcycles for all riders and road captains. This ensures that we have adequate spares and required tools in case of any breakdown. Hence we do not allow riders to do the tour on their motorcycle.

Would I be carrying my own luggage on the motorcycle?

No, we have back-up vehicles on all our tours that will carry your luggage for you. But you should carry your valuables like passport, cash, camera and other important equipment with you at all the time. We shall be providing you with a tank bag for the same.

Can I bring a partner with me on the tour?

Yes, you surely can. We believe that the travel experience is more enhanced when you have your partner with you on the journey. That is why we have discounted couple packages for our tours. Please note that if you book the couple package, we only provide one motorcycle.

What should be my fitness level?

We definitely are not making you climb Mount Everest. But if you can climb few flights of stairs without getting breathless, you are fit enough! But you should consult your doctor if you want to join any of the tours to Ladakh, where all the action is at high altitudes.

What is the risk involved?

The risk factor is about the same when you drive or ride to work every day in our country. Just because you are riding a motorcycle in India does not mean that all of a sudden you are in a high risk zone. Motorcyclists around the world get overwhelmed after watching images and videos of Indian traffic, but all our tours are in remote regions of India where traffic is minimal. It all depends on your mindset, whether you want to call tough riding conditions as adventure or risk, or understand the paradox behind this argument.

“ I took the long trip from Kolkata solely to explore Ladakh's splendour in the most daring way possible, and it was well worth the effort. Both the service and the meal were excellent. ”

“ Prior to getting engaged, my bike ride to Ladakh served as my bachelor party and final outing with the guys. It was, to put it mildly, the best and most refreshing thing I could have hoped for. I adored every aspect of it. The rental bikes were excellent and in excellent condition for driving on smooth roads, good highways, river bed roads, or even off-roading. ”
“ Although this is my second trip with Adventure Nation, this is my first time bicycling. The previous time I visited Hampta Pass Trek. I also had a wonderful time there. This time, it was a lot of fun! It was so much pleasure to have everyone with us, including the crew that was there to take care of the motorcycles, our food, and our lodging. I'm still so happy. I've never had a better encounter. ”

Harmeet Kapoor

“ Take the journey of your life, but make sure you are well-prepared before you leave. It is preferable to make your reservations through a company like Adventure Nation because we received a comprehensive itinerary and continuous mechanical support. And if you go with them, you won't need to carry any extra items like camping gear and other things. Additionally, going with these guys is safer if you're travelling alone because you'll undoubtedly make some riding companions. ”
