A forgotten race track can settle the new vs old debate

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8:  Blasts from the Past

Episode Rating:  Four of Five Ground Gears

(Spoilers, obviously)

Newer is always better

The episode opens right up with the feature film. Richard Hammond shows up in a 1957 Jaguar XKSS. Except, it is not quite a 1957. Since a fire in the factory cut short the original production run of the road going version of Jaguar's Le Mans racer, Jaguar decided to finish the production in 2016. Since the original plans were lost in the fire, Jaguar had to reverse engineer everything to make sure the 2016 version was built exactly as the original version was.

Jeremy Clarkson joined him in his own brand new-vintage car: an Aston Martin DB4 GT Lightweight. In the late 50's it was the fastest car in the world, and this recently-built version has an even bigger engine.

They go to Pau, France to run one of the earliest race courses in existence. While they revel in their car's beauty at a café, they notice a car that they say exemplifies the over-styled ugliness of modern cars: The Honda Civic Type-R. Then James May steps out of it.

Claiming that newer is always better, May says his Honda would prove that modern cars are better in every way, except looks. He tries to prove it by challenging the two to a drive around town.

Hammond and Clarkson have to admit their cars are hard work to drive on the street without synchros, heavy clutches and steering, and no air conditioning. Then they goad May into flying by in the Civic on a section of highway known for having very strict police. Luckily for May, but sadly for the rest of us, there were no cops in sight.

Conversation Street

On conversation street, the three briefly discuss the folly of letting the public vote on naming anything, the pointlessness of animal vs car races and the unfortunate images that come to mind when hearing the name of the Lamborghini Urus.

They also examine the strange (To their British minds) popularity of Ford F-150s. They correctly point out that Ford F-150 drivers will never care about the hybrid version.

Ford GT Track Test

Last time the Ford GT showed up on The Grand Tour, it was only used on the streets and Jeremy couldn't get the most out of it. To fix this, they took it to a track. Clarkson says the sound is terrible and the power number isn't staggering, but without the weight of a V8, it is still great on a track. With a 0-60 time of 2.8 seconds, Clarkson figures the Ford GT is too hardcore to be bought by posers.

However, he also feels that the car is soul-less. On the test track, it finished faster than a McLaren 720S but slower than the cheaper Lamborghini Huracan Performante.

Celebrity F-off

This episode, they aim to find the fastest drummer from a band starting with the letter 'P.' So, they bring on Stewart Copeland of The Police and Pink Floyd's Nick Mason.

Copeland's dad was a CIA spy and Mason's dad got him into cars to a point that he doesn't even know how many cars he currently has in his collection.

Unsurprisingly, the man with the collection of rare racing cars beat the man who couldn't care less about them, with Mason completing the course in 1:21.3 and Copeland taking 1:24.2.

Foggy Mountains and Banked Ovals

Back to the feature film, Hammond found a way to secure his roof-less, lock-less car overnight at the hotel by spending all night standing by it. On a drive through the mountains, the old cars were terrible and uncomfortable to drive at slow speeds in the cold. A thick Fog took visibility down to zero and Hammond's Jag broke down. After losing his parked car in the fog, and accidentally interrupting a couple's alone time while looking for it, Clarkson left Hammond to repair the Jag while trying to convince May that nothing had happened.

Once the fog lifted, Jeremy's Aston worked much better, thanks to the fact that he could drive it the only way it liked: hard.

They crossed into Spain and took their cars to Autódromo de Sitges-Terramar, the oldest surviving banked oval track in all of Europe. The track was used in 1923 and has banks up to 78 degrees.

After Clarkson drilled holes in the windows of his 1.5 million-dollar Aston Martin, the three took practice laps on the oval for a challenge. The track has been abandoned so long, it is bumpy and filled with pot-holes, and it is clear that the contest will be less about the cars and more about who has more guts to fly around the sketchy track.

Hammond dropped out of the contest because he wanted to live, so Clarkson and May were left to try to achieve the highest speed by the end of one of the turns.

May and the Honda did 93 mph while Clarkson and the Aston did 89 mph. The Civic Type R was the winner, which is not surprising when you saw how rough the track was. Having adjustable shocks was the biggest advantage in this challenge.

Impressions

It was weird to see May as the defender of the modern, but the other two presenters were quick to point that out, turning his apparently contrarian take into a running joke. Seeing the Ford GT on a track where it belongs was a treat, and the guests were genuinely interesting. The historic locations and the incredible banking of the oval were enough to make this episode one of the better ones. We weren't on the edge of our seats like during the skiing film in a previous episode, but there were plenty of moments that made us gasp, 'whoa!'

Quote of the Episode

"It's not as revolting as what's gotten out of it" -Jeremy Clarkson describing his hatred for the Honda Civic Type-R... and James May.

Civic Type R

The Honda Civic Type R was used by May in Blasts from the past as a better alternative to the Jaguar XKSS and the Aston Martin DB4 GT . It has a 316bhp 2.0l turbocharged engine which propels the Type R from 0-60 in 4.8 seconds and maxes out at 170mph.

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

I’ve been impressed by the last two episodes of The Grand Tour, but can episode 8 keep up the momentum? Well when you consider this week’s episode featured the Ford GT (again), a ‘classic’ Jaguar XKSS, a ‘classic’ Aston Martin DB4GT and last, but not least, a Honda Civic Type R, it looks to be rather mouthwatering. So let’s get stuck in to what it has to offer, and as always, there will be spoilers – including those fixed to the GT and the Civic Type R.

Going Back In Time Without Moving

The trio start the show by introducing the ‘new’ Jaguar XKSS, a continuation build from Jaguar themselves, which replaces the 9 ‘lost’ models from the 50s . Before we know it, we join Richard Hammond in the sunny scenery of France. More specifically, Pau, the destination for the first ever Grand Prix race. So then, it’s a historic feature but in modern times, much like the Jaguar XKSS.

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

The car may look like a well-kept classic, but in fact it was made last year, but to the same specification of the original. Hammond quickly points out that this was a lot easier said than done, especially as a lot of the original plans were lost. Before we get totally lost in the beauty of the XKSS, Clarkson roars in to the film in the equally delectable Aston Martin DB4GT.

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

Like the XKSS, the DB4 GT is a new car built using old principles, only it’s not entirely true to the original. Well, it is mostly, but it has a slightly bigger engine and it has modern brakes as well, which in the grand scheme of things is probably for the best. Clarkson describes it as an “old car, that is brand spanking new”.

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

Talking over, the pair race around the closed streets of Pau and this is where the cinematography steps up a gear whilst Clarkson struggles to – quite literally. Thanks to the lack of a synchro gearbox, Clarkson, – who is already sweating like a pig due to the lack of wind-down windows and air-con – struggles to move through the gears as he’s forced to rev match. Hammond also has trouble with his brakes, leading him to say that he needed “big hairy balls” to drive it. A bit too much information…

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

The pair reconvene at cafe to talk over their cars, and all of a sudden, a bright red Honda Civic Type R. Now, who would bring that among such a pure pedigree of cars? It is of course Captain Slow, who remarks that old things are rubbish and that items of a modern nature are much better. This seems ironic, given this is coming from the man who likes to collect – and disassemble – old stuff. Clarkson and Hammond try to get May in hot water with the long arm of the law by egging him on to speed, but sadly for them, it doesn’t work.

To be continued…

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

More Decent Banter In Conversation Street

If you’ve read any of my other Grand Tour reviews, you’ll know that I find that Conversation Street to fall flat sometimes, but I’ve really enjoyed this feature the last few episodes. That trend continues in this episode as I laughing out loud at the alternative names the trio gave to a couple of grit machines in Doncaster. They also discuss the pointlessness of racing a Formula E racer against a Cheetah, the medical sounding name of the Lamborghini Urus and the hybrid – yes, hybrid(!) – Ford F-150.

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

The Ford GT Returns To GT

The Ford GT is back on The Grand Tour after winning the big race in America with Clarkson at the wheel. The tall Yorkshireman is back in the driver’s seat once more, only this time the colour’s blue and the location for the drive is the Eboladrome. Clarkson picks up from where he left off, waxing lyrical about how the car is savage and raw.He likens it to barroom brawler, but that’s not to say it’s perfect.

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

He laments the fact that it has a turbocharged V6 and not a V8, meaning that the noise is not satisfactory, but he accepts it’s been done for lightness. He then also complains about the “ugly” steering wheel and how the fact it feels a bit plasticky. Despite this though, he describes the car as one for proper drivers – those who wear Nomex and not spandex. His final comments on the car did surprise me though.

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

Rock Gods Collide In Celebrity Face-Off

There’s a good chance that many would have never heard of the stars of this week’s Celebrity Face Off. The aim is to find the fastest drummer from a rock band that starts with the letter P. Step forward Nick Mason from Pink Floyd and Stewart Copeland from The Police. Like some of you reading this, I know almost nothing about them, but I do appreciate the music from Pink Floyd. I’ve never really listened to The Police, so I can’t really comment on that.

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

Copeland though was quite an entertaining chap to watch, but that’s not to say Mason was lacklustre. In fact the two of them bounced of each other really well and although it’s not my favourite interview of the season, it was entertaining nonetheless. Mason dabble in classic motor racing whereas Copeland’s car history is much less spectacular, so no prizes for guessing who won this week.

Driven Round The Bend

We head back to the main film, and May is still trying to convince that the modern Civic Type R is better than Clarkson and Hammond’s ‘classic’ models. To help prove this, the trio head to Spain to head to a track, which May states is special. The drive to it doesn’t exactly go to plan as they hit thick fog, which proves to be a problem for Clarkson and Hammond. Mind you, things get even worse for Clarkson as it manages to lose his car…

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

Car found and the fog lifted, Clarkson heads back on the road, but without Hammond as he experiences engine problems with the Jag. Not looking to lose face though, Clarkson tells May that Hammond went up ahead, but this facade is quickly torn apart when May spots that the supposed XKSS is actually a filming car. Nice try Clarkson…

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

Hammond finally gets back on the road and the trio make it to vibrant – and much warmer – city of Barcelona. This is where they find The Terramar, the oldest surviving bank track in Europe. It’s also very steep as Clarkson, Hammond and May demonstrate by trying to climb up it. May’s idea is to set up a speed trap to see who is able to get the fastest speed. Because of the enormity of the task ahead of them, the three of them decide to get a bit of practice to help get their eye in.

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

Even in the super modern Civic Type R, this looks to be a daunting task, so I’m not surprised Hammond withdrew from the challenge, especially as the XKSS is worth a million quid. That leaves Clarkson and May to go head-to-head, mano-a-mano. Captain Slow may have been at the wheel, but was the Type R able to do enough to win? I’ll leave that for you to find out.

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

Final Thoughts

Another solid episode from the GT production team, and you know what, this may just be my favourite of season 2 so far. I am a tad disappointed that the Civic Type R wasn’t discussed a bit more than it was, as it felt like a bit of a token feature at times. As always, the episode was presented very well and it was a slick from the get-go. The banter was flowing freely and had me chuckling away, which can only be a good thing. Bring on next week!

Rated 7.8/10.

22. S02, E04 – ‘Unscripted’

grand tour civic type r episode

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May attempt to show what would happen if  The Grand Tour  made a completely unscripted film with no pre-arranged locations, no set-up stunts, and no planned incidents. All they agree is that the starting point will be in Croatia, where Jeremy arrives in an Audi TT RS, while Richard turns up with a not-at-all-comparable Ariel Nomad. What follows is a demonstration of why some kind of script is generally a good thing. Rated 6.3/10.

23. S02 Mini-Special – ‘Feed the World’

grand tour civic type r episode

In this mini-special, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May take it upon themselves to try and end world hunger with an incredible journey across Mozambique. The three notice that people in the coastal regions of this country are well-fed on the bountiful supplies of fish from the ocean, while those in the interior exist on the brink of hunger. Their solution is to find a way to transport that fish inland but, predictably, they cannot agree on the best method to do this. Rated 5.7/10.

Eres un figura… Gracias, Un saludo

Mozambique last !? This was for me the best and funniest of all the episodes!

' src=

I thought enviro-mental was one of the highlights in season one, although what James built was stupid and just not funny. They should re-do that episode except this time they all follow Richard Hammond’s concept idea.

' src=

Really disappointed with the mini special, was looking forward to it all series, think next time they should do a normal 2hr special cos that 1 was rubbish an just felt rushed :/

' src=

Yeah so was I to be honest. I wonder if carting around such a large crew puts a limit on how far they can go or what they’re able to do.

' src=

feels like all they do is talking while driving. usually we would’ve see them detour, buying souvenirs, ‘upgrading’ their vehicles, enjoying the view, etcetera etcetera

The Grand Tour: Watch These New Outtakes You’ve Never Seen Before

It’s not long until the next episode of The Grand Tour will be released on Amazon Prime Video, but it’s been so long since the last episode, The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen , that we need a bit of warming up before we just straight back in. Thankfully, DriveTribe has been given a few outtakes from the episode ‘Blasts from the Past’ to ease us back in.

In these short clips, you get to see Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson fighting against the gearboxes of two very expensive, 7-figure price tag cars: a Jaguar XK SS and an Aston Martin DB4 GT. They crunch the gears like there’s no tomorrow, and Jeremy has an issue with his bracelets getting stuck in the racing harnesses.

James May is, of course, just James May, as he’s driving a Honda Civic Type R in this episode over a classic car option. Instead, he gets annoyed with the pair when they stop to look at the ‘views’ on a fog-covered side of the road.

What are you most looking forward to? Let us know!

The Grand Tour's second season has been going from strength to strength lately, culminating in the finest film Jeremy Clarkson has ever produced for the show with a love letter to the Lancia 037's battle with Audi in the 1983 World Rally Championship . How will they possibly top last week's series highlight? Well, by focusing on a breed of car you don't often see in car shows: continuation models that are painstakingly rebuilt by manufacturers to their original specification.

In episode eight, Clarkson drives a reborn Aston Martin DB4 GT Lightweight from the 1960s, while Hammond experiences the 1950s Jaguar XKSS in its modern continuation form in what looks like another solid episode. Yes, we're being treated to another episode of The Grand Tour that's actually about cars. Who would have thought?

To add some context, the two reborn British sports car classics will be visit some of the European locations they used to race in during the 1950s and 1960s. However, to shake things up May will be joining them in a modern Honda Civic Type R to try and prove that it's better than the continuation cars in every way. We know what we would rather drive. That said, both Clarkson and Hammond seem to be struggling to use those old-school gearboxes. There's also some unfinished business to attend to in this week's episode. You see, while the new Ford GT has already featured in the current season , we only got to see it drive around congested city streets in New York which is hardly pushing its potential.

This will be rectified this week when Clarkson thrashes the all-American sports car around the Eboladrome circuit. Last week, the Lamborghini Huracan Peformante set the fastest time ever recorded on the show, so we'll have to wait and see if the GT can beat it. As for this week's Celebrity Face Off, rock legends Stewart Copeland from The Police and Pink Floyd's Nick Mason compete against each other to find "the world's fastest drummer from a band beginning with the letter P". "It's actually quite hard to get it right, going too fast won't work and going too slow won't work either," said Mason. "At the end of the day it's fun! You want to do it again, you think, oh I can get another second off this time."

  10. The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 8 Review

Another solid episode from the GT production team, and you know what, this may just be my favourite of season 2 so far. I am a tad disappointed that the Civic Type R wasn't discussed a bit more than it was, as it felt like a bit of a token feature at times. As always, the episode was presented very well and it was a slick from the get-go.
