Hockey can`t stop tour

hockey can't stop tour merchandise

The "Hockey Can't Stop Tour" is series of exhibition games played by the Ukrainian National and Pro teams in various countries across the globe. These games are powerful fundraising and awareness platforms.

The first Canadian chapter was organised rapidly, attracting attention from hockey fans in Ukraine and Canada. Gordon Miller, a Canadian sportscaster for TSN, led the initiative and promptly provided support to the foundation. The second tour  took place in April 2023 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where the "Dnipro" team faced off against the "Belfast Giants." This event was made possible through the invaluable support of The Odyssey Trust.

The tour aimed to show the leading hockey nations that Ukraine remained resilient, independent, and passionate about hockey.

We invite all interested countries and clubs to participate in the next instalments of the tour.

Golden Bears to host Ukrainian National Team for ‘Hockey Can’t Stop Tour’

Golden bears to play fundraiser game on january 3rd.

EDMONTON – The University of Alberta will be one of four Canada West schools to host the Ukrainian National team later this winter, in games that will serve both as preparation for the FISU Winter Games, and as a fundraiser for Ukrainian communities torn apart by the war.

The Golden Bears will host the Ukrainian National Team on January 3 rd at Clare Drake Arena, with the Universities of Saskatchewan (December 30 th ), Calgary (January 2 nd ), and Manitoba (January 9 th ) also hosting games.

All ticket sale profits will be sent to the Canada/Ukraine Foundation , which provides assistance to humanitarian groups in Ukraine and Canada. The Foundation will disperse the majority of funds to Save Ukrainian Hockey Dream , a charitable foundation operated by the Ukrainian Ice Hockey Federation with the assistance of the IIHF.

The foundation's goal is to support players at home and abroad, continue to train youth and professional teams, and restore Ukrainian arenas damaged by the war.

The games for the Ukrainian National Team will serve as both a fundraiser for hockey in the Ukraine, as well as act as pre-tournament games heading into the 2023 FISU Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. The Ukrainian National Team will compete for their home country between January 12 th and 23 rd , which includes their tournament opener against Canada on the 12 th .

"We are excited about the opportunity to play the Ukrainian National Hockey Team. The hockey world is small, and this game allows Bears hockey, Athletics, the University of Alberta, and the Edmonton community to support Ukrainian hockey during their difficult times," said Golden Bears head coach Ian Herbers . "It will be a new and exciting challenge for our student-athletes playing an international match in the atmosphere of a packed Clare Drake Arena. It will help in our preparation for a big second half of the season, while allowing the Ukrainian National team to prepare for the FISU games in Lake Placid, NY. Furthermore, I would like to thank all the people and sponsors that are helping to make this a successful event for the Ukrainian hockey community."

The 'Hockey Can't Stop Tour' was made possible with the generous sponsorship from Tim Hortons, Sobeys, True North Sports and Entertainment, Heritage Frozen Foods Ltd. (CHEEMO), Ticketmaster, and Visaic Inc., who combined are covering travel and accommodation costs for the Ukrainian Team, costs associated with hosting of the four games, ticket fees, and streaming.

The Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, and Winnipeg Jets will also all contribute 50/50 funds to this cause, with confirmed dates yet to be determined.

Hockey Can’t Stop Tour reaches final destination in Winnipeg

The final game of the “Hockey Can’t Stop” Tour takes place on Monday at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg

Perhaps it’s only fitting that a tour as important as this gets to see its final game happen on it’s biggest stage.

In front of an expected crowd of over 7000, the Ukrainian U-25 National team will close out the four-game “Hockey Can’t Stop” Tour on Monday, Jan. 9, at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg.

The matchup against the Manitoba Bisons on the home ice of the Winnipeg Jets will serve as the capper to the week-and-a-half tour across Western Canada that has been focused both on the ice as Ukraine prepares for the 2023 World University Games on Thursday, Jan 12, but also off the ice as communities across Canada have come together to show support for a team working to help keep hockey alive in their country.

The tour started with a game against Saskatchewan at Merlis Belcher Place on Dec. 30, which the Huskies took 2-0. Ukraine then travelled to Calgary on Jan 2 to Father David Bauer Arena for a matchup against the Dinos, who won 3-1, before Ukraine travelled up Highway 2 to Edmonton and the historic Clare Drake Arena for a game against the Alberta Golden Bears who won 5-1.

To anyone involved in the tour, though, the actual hockey played on the ice (while yes valuable preparation for the World University Games), pales in importance to everything that’s gone on around the games the last ten days.

From the packed houses that greeted the Ukrainian U25 National Team in every city that visited.

It was full house for tonight’s game: Ukraine U25 v USask Huskies men’s hockey. There was a standing ovation for Ukraine as they circled the arena after the game – sticks high, our applause & cheers so loud. Such a good game – truly about community & support for one another. pic.twitter.com/nGTFC4Qt5E — USask Provost Airini (@USaskAirini) December 31, 2022

To the simple ways that people have pitched in to help cement this once-in-a-lifetime experience for these athletes.

As the Ukrainian U25 Hockey Team made it’s way from Edmonton to Winnipeg yesterday, they stopped in Saskatoon for a quicky lunch. Many thanks to @TimHortons franchise owner Janna Dutton and her staff for giving the team a friendly welcome and sending them on their way quickly. pic.twitter.com/G9awm2tinN — Gord Miller 🌻 (@GMillerTSN) January 7, 2023

The packed houses are even more valuable as all of the proceeds from ticket sales from the tour will go to the Canada/Ukraine Foundation, which will disperse the majority to Save Ukrainian Hockey Dream, a foundation run by the Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine and the IIHF.

When the buzzer sounds at the Canada Life Centre on Monday night, either the Bisons will pick up their first win of 2023 (after dropping their opening two games of the Canada West season on Friday and Saturday), or the Ukrainian U25 National Team will get to mark down a win to close the tour.

Whatever the result, though, that won’t be the most important part. The most important will be the money raised, the experience given and as Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine Executive Director Aleksandra Slatvytska says the opportunity to continue to grow the relationship between Canada and Ukraine.

“I hope that this tour is not just going to be good preparation for the World University Games and not just raise some money for humanitarian aid for Ukrainians,” she said. “But also I really hope with all my heart that it’s going to be the big beginning and good start for the hockey relationship between Ukraine and Canada for many, many more years.”

'miracle' on ice: ukrainian hockey players bring hockey can't stop tour to winnipeg back to video.

“(Playing in) A NHL rink, it’s something like magic for us,” said Ukrainian National U25 Team forward Gleb Krivoshapkin on Saturday as the team held a practice and media availability at the hockey for all centre in Headingley. “We don’t have these sort of arenas in Ukraine but I hope we will some day. For most of the guys on the team, it’s their first time in Canada and to be in an NHL arena for the first time, it’s really some kind of a miracle for most of us.”

The Ukrainian National Team has been playing the Universities of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Calgary in preparation for the World University Games which begins next week in Lake Placid, N.Y., while raising money for refugees and Ukrainian communities torn apart by the war.

More than 7,000 tickets have been sold for Monday’s game with 4,000 Ukrainian refugees in attendance.

“It’s awesome,” said Krivoshapkin. “When I found out about this tour, about these games, I was so excited and really happy and thankful to everyone who made this tour happen. That we have this opportunity to play against Canadian university teams. This is a really great experience.

“I’m really thankful for your support. The games are good, the teams have a pretty nice level. I think this would be an amazing experience in the future for all of us.”

All ticket sale profits will be sent to   the Canada/Ukraine Foundation , which provides assistance to humanitarian groups in Ukraine and Canada. The Foundation will disperse the majority of funds to   Save Ukrainian Hockey Dream , a charitable foundation operated by the Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine with the assistance of the IIHF.

The team will be honoured Sunday afternoon with a puck drop ceremony ahead of the Winnipeg Jets taking on the Vancouver Canucks , which also features the Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus singing both national anthems.

Krivoshapkin admits that it is extremely hard not to worry about his family and friends back in Ukraine.

“Mentally it’s pretty hard because I’m on the phone with my parents who are still there in Ukraine in Kharkiv and I’m asking them, ‘How are you?’ and they’re always saying that they’re okay,” he said. “Of course they will say that but I know what is going on there. It’s hard but they’re trying to be positive because of these games they have these positive emotions.

“This tour and these games are helping them. At least, it’s helping them mentally with the positive emotion that they can wake up in the morning and stay positive the whole day long.”

The team is coached by Ukraine’s national coach Vadym Shakhraychuk with former NHLer Dmitri Kristich as assistant coach.

“(The tour is) some kind of miracle,” said Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine Executive Director Aleksandra Slatvytska. “Nobody really believed in that in Ukraine. Nobody ever imagined that we could do that, especially during the war.”

Slatvytska hopes that the tour serves as a beginning of greater ties between Ukraine and Canada.
