Looking for a short getaway in Malaysia that your entire group will enjoy? Here are some unique and fun places to visit!

We lived in Malaysia for almost 18 months and spent a lot of that time exploring the country. I wrote this article to help others based on my own experience researching all the places we wanted to see while we lived there.

I include everything from peninsular Malaysia, Malaysian Borneo, and a variety of Islands you may never have heard of before!

Since we’re already planning a return trip, I’ve been keeping all this updated so I’m ready to see it all when we go back.

Since sharing is caring, I wrote this article to help you plan your own short getaway in Malaysia!

Each of these destinations offers something different and exciting for visitors on a quick trip to Malaysia, so you’re sure to find something that everyone will enjoy. Let’s jump in!

What is a Short Getaway in Malaysia?

A short getaway in Malaysia is a quick trip that only lasts two to three nights. It can even be a quick staycation Malaysia style.

Depending on your budget and how much time you have, it could be a two-hour or less drive from where you live or it can be a plane flight to another part of the country.

Some short getaways in Malaysia are more adventurous while others offer a more relaxed atmosphere. It all depends on your preferences and what you’re looking for in a vacation.

No matter what, there’s sure to be a short getaway in Malaysia for families, couples, or any kind of travel group!

Short Getaways Near Kuala Lumpur

All of these places to go on a short getaway in Malaysia are two hours or less driving from Kuala Lumpur . They’re great for travelers on a budget or who have a shorter period of time to get away in Malaysia .

1. Kuala Lumpur City Stay

If you’re really pressed for time or don’t live in KL, Malaysia’s capital city offers some really great options for a short getaway in Malaysia. It’s really fun at Christmastime and New Years , too!

Either spend a couple of nights in KLCC for a KL getaway to enjoy all the tourist opportunities that the city center has to offer or plan time at a local waterpark. There are also some excellent hotels with rooftop pools in KL, too!

If you stay in KLCC, then KLCC park, with its enormous playground and fabulous splash pad, is a quick stroll away during your KL short getaway.

Aquaria KLCC and Petrosains Science Center are also excellent activities to consider. Don’t forget to visit the Twin Tower Skydeck, too!

Southern Kuala Lumpur Hotels and Activities

South of KLCC, we love to spend a couple of days at Sunway Lagoon . This theme park offers water activities, a small zoo, amusement park rides, and a year-round haunted house.

Sunway Lagoon is also adjacent to Sunway Pyramid Mall, which offers its own variety of activities from bowling and archery to ice skating and escape rooms! There’s even a TGV movie theater with IMAX.

Little Man told me the area around Sunway Lagoon is the best staycation Malaysia offers!

2. Fraser’s Hill

Also known as Fraser’s Hill, Bukit Fraser is a colonial hill town with excellent bird-watching and good hiking. Located in Pahang, it’s a great place to spend a short getaway.

There are plenty of things to do, including hiking and picnicking at Fraser’s Hill Lighthouse. The Pine Tree Trail and Hemmant trail are fairly easy hiking paths.

Plus, you can also visit Deer Park to see different types of deer or go to the Jeriau Waterfall.

3. Genting Highlands

Located just over the state border in Pahang, Genting Highlands is less than an hour’s drive from KL. We loved it as a short trip from KL option!

Despite its proximity to the capital city, the mountains and clouds make it feel like your 2 days 1 night trip in Malaysia is a lifetime away. Because of this, some people consider Genting Highlands the best getaway near KL.

Although Genting Highlands is known for its casinos, there are a lot of kid-friendly activities here as well. You can visit a local strawberry farm to pick your own strawberries and taste assorted strawberry products in the cafe.

In addition, it’s a lot of fun to ride a mountainside cable car and visit the ancient Chin Swee Caves temple. It’s worth paying extra for the glass-bottom gondola so you can see the ground fly past you underneath!

Genting Highlands Hotels & Activities:

At the top of the cable car ride is Resorts World, which has a huge indoor amusement park. Plan to spend an hour or so exploring the complex even if you don’t stay to enjoy the theme park.

4. Kuala Selangor

Considering its proximity to KL, this is a great short weekend in Malaysia’s Selangor! This is one of the more memorable short trips in Malaysia that we’ve taken. It’s great for a family trip or an adventure with friends.

Kuala Selangor is best known for the Sky Mirror, a natural phenomenon that occurs at low tides. It allows for trick photography so that the water reflects a mirror of your actions. We loved it! In addition, you can take a sunset boat tour to see fireflies at Kuantan Firefly Park as well as scores of eagles along the Selangor River. Plus, you can explore the Sri Shakti Temple and the lighthouse atop Malawati Hill.

You’ll often find this historic city spelled “Malacca,” which is the English-imposed spelling from colonial times. The correct, Malay spelling is Melaka.

Located in the state of the same name, the coastal city on the Straits of Melaka has a lot to offer.

We actually stayed here for four nights but could have easily enjoyed many of the sights after only staying two or three. Some people even just come for a day trip.

One of the best things to do in Melaka is a river cruise! From seeing the beautiful street art to the water monitors sunning themselves, this one is enjoyable for all ages.

For a short getaway in Malaysia to Melaka, you should visit the submarine museum and the prison museum as well as some of the historic ruins and the Shore Skytower. The Shore Aquarium is pretty great, too!

Pro Tip : Make time to ride a trishaw ! Their LED lights glow like beacons after dark so you can’t miss seeing them near the A’Famosa fort.

6. Port Dickson

Port Dickson is a waterfront town located in Negeri Sembilan. It’s best known for its overwater bungalows at Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson. However, there are also some great things to do there with kids during a quick getaway.

Families will enjoy the PD Ostrich Show Farm as well as the Port Dickson lighthouse, which offers a stunning panorama of the jungle and the ocean.

The town also has the Army Museum, which has a variety of retired military vehicles, as well as the historic Kota Lukut fort.

Just south of town are the Blue Lagoon and Tanjung Tuan Forest Reserve, which offer excellent swimming opportunities during your short weekend getaway.

7. Bukit Tinggi + Bentong/Raub

Bukit Tinggi is located in Pahang and is a great place to go on a short getaway. There are plenty of things to do, including visiting the Bukit Tinggi Botanical Gardens and going on a jungle trek.

You can visit the Japanese Village, where they can learn about Japanese culture and try traditional food. Plus, Colmar Tropicale is a French-themed village that’s ideal for people who want to experience something different.

You can also, visit the Lembah Anai waterfall, go to Bentong to enjoy one of the hot springs resorts, or Raub to go gold panning.

8. Kuala Kubu Bharu

Kuala Kubu Bharu (KKB) is located in Selangor and is a great place to spend a short getaway.

There are plenty of things to do including hiking to the Sungai Selangor Dam for a lovely scenic overlook and visiting the Sungai Chiling Waterfalls.

You can also visit the massive playground at Taman Tasik Millenium or take a dip in the Taman Arif hot springs.

Just sitting outside at night to watch the stars is also a lot of fun. You may find that two nights here isn’t quite enough.

9. Sekinchan

Sitting on the coast of Northern Selangor, Sekinchan is reminiscent of Balinese rice paddy fields. You can even visit a working rice farm as well as the Paddy Gallery museum about the history of rice farming in Malaysia.

The Sekinchan Wishing Tree is located right on a great beach for swimming, so you can take a dip after tying your wish to the tree.

Families will also enjoy the huge playground at MSekin Wonderland, as well as the colorful structures the campus has to offer.

10. Hulu Langat

Hulu Langat is located in Selangor and is a great place to spend a short getaway. There are plenty of things to do, including hiking, picnicking, and visiting the Hulu Langat Falls.

You can also visit the Sungai Congkak Recreational Forest or take a dip in the Sungai Gabai Waterfall. The Kem Herba recreational camp is also a lot of fun.

11. Janda Baik

Janda Baik is located in Pahang and is a great place for taking a short getaway in Malaysia. From the unique accommodation options to the expansive coffee farms that offer tours , there are plenty of things to do during a short getaway.

You can also visit the BOH Tea Garden, go on a nature walk along the Janda Baik River, or visit the Tampit Waterfall. Pack sturdy shoes for hiking!

Bukit Jugra is located in Selangor and is a great spot to spend a Malaysian short getaway.

There are plenty of things to do in this nostalgic old town, including hiking and picnicking during a visit to the Bukit Jugra Lighthouse.

Pantai Morib is a nearby beach that’s perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and fishing. You can also visit the Kampung Cempaka Putih to see traditional Malaysian houses.

13. Batang Kali

Located in Selangor, a short getaway to Batang Kali is a perfect short vacation in Selangor for those who want to spend time outdoors in beautiful landscapes.

Teratak Tok Alang river rafting is great for kids and those who don’t love the water because the river isn’t too deep or too rough. It’s a perfect place to spend two or three nights.

The beautiful Sakyak monastery and Siamese Temple is located there, as well, and is a fun place to tour. You can also visit Hoho Farm, a local farming cooperative, for a day of picking fruits and vegetables.

Batang Kali Hotels & Activities

👉 I suggest One Home Hotel for staying in Batang Kali.

Short Getaways Around Peninsular Malaysia

You’ll have to drive further than two hours from Kuala Lumpur to get to these towns and cities, but they’re well worthwhile. You can even take a bus or the train to some of them if you don’t have a car.

14. Belum Rainforest

This rainforest in northern Perak offers a variety of activities, from guided nature hikes on Banding Island or Royal Belum State Park to exploring Temenggor Lake.

It’s a great short getaway in Malaysia for anyone who enjoys the outdoors!

I recommend you stay at one of the eco-resorts in the area for the best up-close nature experience. The Belum Rainforest resort even has a star trail for night hiking!

Belum Rainforest Hotels and Activities

👉 Belum Rainforest Resort has been called one of the best nature retreats in Malaysia. However, Belum Adventure Camp and Belum Eco Resort are also excellent!

There aren’t really any restaurants in this area, so all or most of your meals will likely be at your resort’s on-site restaurants.

👉 This Belum rainforest package includes your hotel stay, meals at the hotel, and round trip airport transfers!

15. Cameron Highlands

Located on the Perak border of Pahang, the Cameron Highlands are known for nature hiking and strawberries!

Most strawberries grown in Malaysia come from this area, and you can tour one of the many farms and even pick your own to take home!

Note : Our strawberries never made it past the hotel room the next day!

You can take also nature hikes in the Mossy Forest as well as visit the Cameron Highland Butterfly Farm. Cactus Valley is an expansive plant nursery that grows and sells both cacti as well as assorted fruits.

If you visit on a weekend, make sure to check out the Golden Hills Weekend Market. This outdoor shopping extravaganza also has some great street food!

In addition, the Time Tunnel Museum is very popular as are the Robinson Waterfalls and Taman Eko Rimba Parit Falls.

Cameron Highlands Hotels and Activities:

16. Johor Bahru

We lived in JB for six months in 2020, so we go to explore it pretty fully during that time!

Families would be remiss if they didn’t spend a short getaway in Malaysia at Legoland ! From rides and STEM classes to a waterpark and aquarium, there’s enough to fill several days here.

👉 Buy your Legoland Malaysia tickets in advance, to avoid lines at the gate!

Plus, if you stay at the Legoland Hotel you also get access to a Lego-themed pool reserved only for hotel guests.

In addition to Legoland, the surrounding area also has a great board game cafe at Eco Botanic as well as EnerG X Trampoline Park at Sunway Big Box mall.

For outdoor nature activities, the Heritage Forest and the Edible Park are in nearby Medini Iskandar.

Johor Bahru Hotels and Activities

Ipoh is known for its street culture, specifically street art and street food, as well as white coffee. You should definitely go there to explore all those things. However, there’s so much more to do!

Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat offers a variety of relaxing thermal pools for adults and kids alike to enjoy. It’s a luxurious way to wind down after a busy work week.

Sam Poh Tong Temple and Perak Cave Temple are both located nearby. They’re fun for sightseeing!

Families also love Sunway Lost World of Tambun theme park. It’s great for a single-day visit, or even a couple of days if you have more time.

18. Taiping

Not to be confused with Taipei in Taiwan, this city in Perak offers a lot of unique things to do for a short getaway in Malaysia. The Perak Museum and the Taiping Zoo Night Safari are incredibly popular activities.

However, the Taiping Lake Gardens are also a lot of fun and offer beautiful views to relax and enjoy.

One of the more unique things to do in Taiping is touring the Spritzer bottling plant, then enjoying their on-site eco-park and playing mini-golf.

19. Cherating Beach

Cherating is located on the Northeast coast of Terengganu state and has excellent surfing. Kids and adults alike can take lessons here if you’ve never done it. If surfing isn’t your thing, don’t worry!

You can also visit the Cherating Turtle Sanctuary, relax on Cherating beach, or explore the Kemaman Recreation Park. Plus, you can even go firefly-watching by boat on the Cherating Mangrove River!

20. Desaru Beach

Also located on the eastern coast, but on the southern tip of Johor state near Singapore, Desaru is a great place to spend a short getaway in Malaysia.

While the beach is (of course) one of the more popular things to do here, there is so much more!

From the Desaru Ostrich Farm to the Desaru Fruit Farm , there are many agricultural activities to enjoy here. We spent an entire day just at the fruit farm, including an amazing farm-to-table lunch and an ATV ride.

If you aren’t a beach or farm person, check out Adventure Waterpark Desaru. They offer pools and waterslides for everyone to enjoy!

Enjoy a 100-Year-Old Kampung House as well as some amazing waterfalls in this small town in central Perak. There are several museums here talking about the history of the area.

There is also a massive tree plantation here, called Tea Valley. You can tour the facilities to learn not only about the area’s agriculture but also to see some amazing viewpoints.

Just south of Gopeng is Tempurung Cave, one of the longest caves in Malaysia. You can explore several kilometers inside, which has some amazing stalactite and stalagmite formations.

22. Taman Negara

Taman Negara is a national park in northern Pahan. It was established in 1938 and means “national park” in Malay. Taman Negara is one of the world’s oldest deciduous rainforests. It’s estimated to be over 130 million years old.

When visiting Taman Negara, you can explore the canopy walkway among the treetops as well as the Gua Telinga cave system. You can also take adventure excursions on the Lata Berkoh rapids.

Or experience the tropical rainforest by going birdwatching or jungle trekking as well as enjoying a river cruise along the Tahan River.

23. Kuala Sepetang

This small city in Perak is known for eco-tourism. The most popular activity here is tours of the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve, where you can also enjoy seeing eagles and other wildlife.

Tours can be done by boat or on one of the walking paths.

Some wildlife guides also offer dolphin spotting tours, which are very popular, too. And you may also enjoy touring the local charcoal factory to see how it’s made.

24. Jungle Railway of the East Coast

The Jungle Railway of the East Coast is a great activity for all ages. It starts in Tumpat and ends in Gemas. Fly into and stay overnight in Kota Bahru, next to Tumpat, and watch the sunset Pantai Cahaya Bulan.

The journey takes about seven hours. You can enjoy the scenery and learn about the history of Malaysia.

When arriving at Gemas, stay overnight at Awanmulan so you can hike Brogas Hill before heading home the next day.

This is a great activity because it is relatively affordable and it is a unique experience. In addition, there are several stops along the way where you can get off the train and explore different towns.

👉 Stay at PCB Beach Resort in Kota Bahru and The View Hotel in Sengamat, nearby Gemas. Or you can have a taxi take you 90 minutes to Melaka.

If you don’t want to get off the train for lunch, because you do have to wait for the next one to come by and pick you up again, bring some snacks or a picnic to eat as you enjoy the window views.

25. Kota Kinabalu

The capital of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu (KK), is a gateway to climbing Mount Kinabalu. It’s also home to rainforests, wildlife, beaches, and coral reefs. You may find that 2-3 nights here isn’t enough.

From the Mari Mari Cultural Village and handicraft market to the Kota Kinabalu Wetland Ramsar and Manukan Island Marine Reserve, there are many activities to do on a short getaway here.

Pro Tip : Stop by the I Love KK sign at the waterfront for a fun pic!

Little Man really enjoyed the musical fountain at Tanjung Aru Perdana Park as well as the Aquarium and Marine Life Museum. If you have time left, make a trip to the Poring Hot Spring complex.

Kuching is next to Bako National Park, the oldest national park in Sarawak. It’s an easy day trip from Kuching, although the only way to access the park is a 20-minute boat ride from the village of Kampung Bako.

Millions of years of erosion of the sandstone have created a coastline of steep cliffs and stretches of white, sandy beaches.

Wave erosion at the base of the cliffs has carved many of the rocks into fantastically shaped arches and columns.

In addition, animal lovers will enjoy a visit to Kuching’s cat museum and to the Semenggoh Nature Preserve, where you can book a tour to see wild orangutans!

Many Malaysian islands are overlooked in favor of Thailand or Indonesia, but they shouldn’t be! Here are my top picks if you want a fabulous island experience in Malaysia.

29. Langkawi Island

Langkawi is off the coast of Perlis, at the northern edge of Malaysia along the Thailand border. It sports the same sort of beautiful jungles and pristine beaches for which the southern Thai islands are well known.

Your biggest challenge in Langkawi will be choosing what activities to exclude during your short getaway in Malaysia. This large island is also well-suited for a longer trip.

I recommend staying at one of the resorts with private pool villas but there are also some amazing family-friendly resorts there as well.

You’ll find many things to do here, including the Langkawi Sky Bridge and Langkawi Skyway Cable Car. These options both offer excellent views of both the island and the ocean.

You can also visit Langkawi Underwater World or Langkawi Wildlife Park and go snorkeling or scuba diving in Pulau Payor Marine Park when you aren’t relaxing on Cenang Beach or Tanjung Rhu Beach.

Telaga Tujuh Waterfall is also a lot of fun!

For land activities, take a hike through the jungle and discover hidden waterfalls. You can also relax on one of the many pristine beaches.

The best part of Tioman Island is that there are plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained. And, at the end of the day, you can all relax in your comfortable hotel room or villa.

32. Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands are islands off the eastern coast of Terengganu. They’re a quick flight for a short getaway from KL in Malaysia.

The two main islands are Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil, but there are a few uninhabited smaller islands as well.

Scuba diving here is reputed to be some of the best in Malaysia. However, there are seemingly endless beaches to explore for those who aren’t certified.

The Alunan Coral Project is run by Alunan resort on the southern end of Perhentian Kecil. It focuses on preventing and reversing coral bleaching in the island’s reefs. You can volunteer there if you contact them in advance.

35. Redang Island

Located off the coast of Terengganu, Redang Island is the perfect short getaway for families. In addition to relaxing on the beach and playing in the ocean, there are a few other fun things to do on Redang Island.

The Turtle Sanctuary is a great place to learn about the different types of turtles that call Redang Island home. Depending on the season, you can even help release baby turtles into the ocean!

In addition, the Terengganu Marine Park is a beautiful place to explore since there are many different types of fish and coral to see.

You can also go snorkeling or diving in the park. It’s easiest to go with a guided tour.

36. Rawa Island

Rawa is a relatively small, private island off the eastern coast of Johor which means it’ll be a very quiet short getaway in Malaysia. There are no proper roads, only a few walkways.

One side of the island is a beach covered with white sand, while the other side has a rocky vertical cliff.

There are many sea and land creatures such as fish, squid, octopus, Malayan sea eagles, and reptiles.

Also blacktip reef sharks can be found feeding in the sea off Rawa. Rawa’s waters are clear and you can see an abundance of corals when snorkeling.

Pro Tip : Ask your resort about Jellyfish season before booking, so you don’t try to swim when it’s unsafe.

Because there isn’t much infrastructure here, you’ll only be able to eat meals at one of the two resorts on the island: Rawa Island Resort or Alang’s Rawa. Bring your own snacks if you’re worried about liking the resort food.

37. Kapas Island

Kapas Island is located just north of Marang in Terengganu. It has a tropical jungle, crystal clear water, white sand beaches, and coral reefs in the surrounding waters.

Reachable by ferry from Marang, the island is promoted as a “diving and snorkeling paradise”.

You can spend your short vacay in Malaysia on Kapas Island for a rustic beach escape or stay in Marang while taking day trips to Kapas.

When you need a break from the beach and snorkeling, take a hike to Bukit Singa on the northern tip of the island. It’s not very steep so most anyone can do this pretty easily. Wear sturdy shoes, not flip-flops!

Located in Selangor, just outside of KL, Carey Island is actually accessible by car from peninsular Malaysia. Kelanang and Tanjung Piai beaches are excellent for a weekend of relaxation and sun.

However, you will also enjoy visiting the Mah Meri Cultural Village and exploring Isana Bandar Palace. They’re great interactive learning opportunities for all ages.

In addition, you can climb to the top of the Bukit Junga lighthouse for lovely views of the Straits of Melaka as well as visit the Jugra Intitu Museum, which is in a converted colonial police station.

Located off of the eastern coast of Johor, not far from the Singapore border, Sibu Island is an excellent short trip in Malaysia. There is very little infrastructure there. However, there are a couple of resorts with meal-inclusive options.

Sea Gypsy Resort is wonderful a short getaway in Malaysia because it offers daily activities from hiking and boogie boarding to tree climbing and a home-made waterslide into the ocean.

There’s even a kids club with a separate kids dinner from 5-10 pm so adults can enjoy a proper meal and social time in the bar.

The bar offers a wide variety of board games and books so you can entertain yourself, too. It’s a lovely short trip to Malaysia from Singapore!

Note : We spent Christmas 2020 here on a 3 days 2 night trip in Malaysia, and it was magical.

In addition to the resort activities, you can hike to the southern tip of the island, go snorkeling, and even go scuba diving.

David and I did a Discover Scuba Dive but Little Man was too young, so one of the other scuba instructors took him snorkeling 1:1.

Pro Tip : The hotel will pick you up at your address in Malaysia (even in KL) and drive you to the Johor jetty and then by boat to Sibu Island.

Ipoh is a real hidden gem of Malaysia, perfect for a weekend getaway. Located halfway between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, it can be reached in a few hours from either location by bus or train. But its convenient location is far from the only reason to visit.

Ipoh is a small but colourful city known for its world-class street art and street food. Things to add to your Ipoh itinerary include street art spotting in Mural Arts Lane and wandering Concubine Lane and Market Lane, both dating back to colonial rule. While these would have once been seedy locations known for brothels, they’re now popular tourist streets with colourful hanging umbrellas, shops, cafes and more street art including interactive pieces you can pose with.

Sampling local food is essential for a getaway to Ipoh. From authentic Chinese restaurants to a bustling Little India, you can learn about Malaysia’s diverse ethnic groups from the food – and by visiting houses of worship like Panglima Kinta Mosque and the Chinese and Indian temples.

Finally, don’t miss the cave temples dotted around Ipoh . Sam Poh Tong, Kek Lok Tong, and Perak Cave Temple are known for their stunning surroundings and religious shrines nestled inside enormous limestone caves. Get a local taxi driver to bring you to all three since public transport is limited. The higher altitudes and mountainous location means that the Cameron Highlands boasts a much cooler climate than the majority of the Malaysian mainland. This is perfect if you want a little respite during the hot, humid summer months.

You will find plenty to keep you occupied during your time in the Highlands, regardless of your specific interest and travel style. The BOH tea plantation is one of Malaysia’s largest producers and exporters of tea. The tea fields here make for an incredible photo experience. Not to mention, the tours offered by the plantation workers are fascinating.

One of the most unique attractions in the Cameron Highlands is the Mossy Forest – a woodland area where the entirety of the trees, plants, and forest floors are covered with moss. The forest is home to a rare and diverse range of insects, plants, and animals – including the carnivorous “pitcher plant” that eats frogs and small animals.

Dedicate your first day in the Highlands to exploring the tea plantations, the strawberry farms, and the farmer’s markets. On Day two, don your comfiest walking shoes, venture into the depths of the mossy forest, and attempt to conquer one of the region’s hiking trails.

Buses to the Cameron Highlands run regularly from Ipoh, Penang, and Kuala Lumpur. The Highlands extend over a large area and public transport within the region leaves a lot to be desired. Base yourself in Tanah Rata or Brinchang so that you are within walking distance to the area’s main attractions.

Penang, located off the northwest coast, is one of the awesome destinations in Malaysia for a short getaway, especially if you are traveling with friends or family. There are a lot of things to do in Penang : start in George Town, the capital of Penang state, a perfect place to base yourself, from where you can spend a weekend exploring around. Start from exploring the Colonial old town area in George Town, a UNESCO heritage site known for its traditional buildings, and incredible street art, which you can do on your own. Walking is the best way to do this, but if you don’t prefer, you can hire a tricycle. Have lunch at one of the local restaurants in Little India , which is not only famous for Indian food, but there are also a few good cafes and restaurants specializing in Middle Eastern cuisine.

Next, right before sunset take a fantastic ride in the funicular train that climbs to the top of Penang hill for some of the best panoramic views of the town. Watch the illuminated city glow and then make your way back down. Alternatively, you could see it from the Rainbow Skywalk at the top of KOMTAR , Penang’s highest building.

Plan a trip to Penang National Park the next day, where there are many hiking trails that you can enjoy. You will need half a day or more depending on the hiking trails you choose, or beaches like the famous Monkey Beach . You can also have a relaxing beach day at Batu Ferringhi Beach, one of the famous beaches in George Town.

Next, visit the Clan jetties, which are stilted villages over the water on George Town’s east coast, and they are an essential part of Penang’s heritage. Chew Jetty is the most famous, while Tan Jetty is excellent for photography.

If you have more time, you can consider exploring the mainland of Penang, Seberang Perai, where you can explore beautiful places like the azure water pools at former mining site Frog Hill , and strike on many hiking trails in Penang Mainland , like Bukit Juru , for example.

Melaka is a gorgeous riverside town that is rich in British, Dutch, and Portuguese colonial history with a UNESCO world heritage status. The town is very compact so is perfect for a short weekend getaway, and can easily be explored by foot. Taman Negara National Park is a fantastic idea for a weekend getaway from Kuala Lumpur. This virgin forest is perfect for nature lovers or for those who are looking for a couple of days of relaxation far from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

Taman Negara is the most primitive virgin rainforest in the world, and much older than the Amazon. According to scientists, the forest of Taman Negara could be more than 130 million years old.

This incredible ecosystem is located 3 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur in the interior of Peninsular Malaysia. The fastest way to reach Taman Negara is by private car, but you can also take buses to the small town of Jerantut and transfer to the park from there. Most accommodation in Taman Negara, however, offers transportation from Kuala Lumpur to Taman Negara, and it’s often just easier to go with them.

People visit Taman Negara for its outdoor activities and hiking trails (don’t forget to bring your adidas kampung ). Once you arrive, get a map with the hiking trails and a list of the suggested activities organized by your hotel so you can plan your days. There are riverboat trips and many short and multi-day trails (most require a guide to be organized at the park’s headquarters).

Even though it’s small, the best things to do in Sekinchan are visiting the outskirts of town and the lush rice paddy fields that surround the eastern perimeter of this small town.

In the proper season, the rice plants can grow as tall as an average adult person, making it a photographer’s paradise. When you are done exploring the rice paddies in the day, head over to the famous Pantai Redang beach to watch the sunset. Grab a coconut, sit on the soft sand, and watch the sun dip beyond the horizon line of the Malacca Strait.

After basking in the stunning sunset, you should try one of the many seafood restaurants that make Sekinchan proud: believe me, the seafood here is incredibly fresh, and most important, absolutely affordable. Loong Hua Restaurant and Restoran Wan Lou are both family-owned restaurants that come highly recommended by locals.

Though Sekinchan is located a short 1.5-hour to 2-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur and it’s very doable as a day trip, I recommend staying for a weekend. I believe that’s the proper way to relax from the hustle-and-bustle of the big cities in Malaysia. To make your stay in Sekinchan more interesting, don’t forget cool activities such as the Sky Mirror and the fireflies boat tour in the nearby town of Kuala Selangor. The town is 30 minutes away by car, and I promise you that these attractions in Kuala Selangor are totally worth the short ride!

Depending on where you travel from, aim to be at the gates of Legoland Malaysia Hotel at 10am. You will find there is plenty to do with all kinds of Lego awesome as you go from amazing roller coasters to LEGO activities themed in the different LEGO worlds, like Ninjago, Tehnic and Lego City. All up there are 70 rides catering from toddlers through to teens, as well as activities sure to appeal to adults, like Miniland.

Perfect Spots for a Short Malaysia Beach Holiday

Perhentian islands.

Both islands are great, but we enjoyed more staying at the more lively Perhentian Kecil. From Kuala Besut you should take a speedboat to Perhentian Kecil. There are fantastic guesthouses and resorts to stay around Petani Beach and Long Beach. If you take a morning boat you will arrive early enough to enjoy the first day.

Spend the first day on the beautiful Longbeach, walk to Coral Bay beach on the jungle path and have lunch in one of the restaurants. Walk back for sunset and drinks on Long Beach.

The diving here is great with warm, clear water, beautiful corals and marine life. Go scuba diving around the Perhentian Islands on the second day. If you are not qualified, do a try dive which is a nice introduction and takes half a day.

Qualified divers will enjoy Tokong Laut, a fantastic dive site rich in marine life and the largely intact Sugar wreck, a sunken freighter lying in 20m of water. Follow your dive by some hiking on the trails through the beautiful jungle connecting resorts and villages on the island.

On the third and final day, I would recommend renting snorkeling gear and a kayak and paddle between Long Beach and Coral Bay, stopping to snorkel. There are reef sharks, barracudas and plenty of beautiful corals and fish to see. Take the afternoon speedboat back to Kuala Besut. The best time to visit the Perhentian islands is the dry season, from March to September.

When you’re looking for a weekend break in Malaysia, Port Dickson might not be at the top of your list. But ask the Kuala Lumpur locals and they’ll tell you that just 90 minutes out of the capital is a gem of a town, packed with things to do.

This budget-friendly holiday destination is jammed full of high-end resorts, plus attractions at every turn. Spend your day exploring Tanjuan Tuan (Cape Rachado) Nature Reserve, with over 80 hectares of forest, beaches and even a soaring lighthouse built by the Portuguese back in the 16th century. The reserve also boasts the best beach in the area, the Blue Lagoon, aptly named for its beautiful blue water and of course soft sands to relax on for the rest of the day.

An old army outpost, you should spend your second day meandering around the Army Museum before taking in a few cultural attractions, like a stop at the Wan Loong Temple or the Lukut Museum. And, if you’re got kids in tow, then head to the Ostrich Show Farm to pet those feathered friends or take a slew of fun photographs at one of the many 3D art galleries and ‘upside-down houses’ dotted around the main city centre.

And, if you’re not sure where to stay while there, definitely shell out for one of the overwater villas at Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson. Pulau Pangkor is less visited by tourists even though it has a lot to offer. There are many lonely beaches like Coral Bay, a Dutch colonial fort with a rock inscribed with an ancient sign of the Dutch East India Company, and is home to a staggering amount of hornbill birds — you can feed them every day at 6 pm at Sunset View Chalet.

The colorful alleys of the two Chinese villages, Sungai Pinang Kecil and Besar, with street markets and boat-making workshops, will leave you amazed for sure. Pangkor Island also has a famously revered Taoist Temple, Foo Ling Kong, which is visited by many devotees and has a mini replica of the Great Wall of China.

Once, you are done with the cultural sightseeing, you’ll be spoilt for choices of great water sport activities on any one of Pangkor’s different beaches. Snorkeling is also highly recommended, as the waters are azure blue, and you may see marine life. For sure, the beaches often reflect with blue plankton at night.

Pulau Sembilan, translating to “Nine Islands”, is a mini-archipelago to the south of Pangkor island. These uninhabited and protected islands — ask locally before you go, as they often close for restoration and conservation — host some of Malaysia’s best diving and snorkeling. Diving is best between the months of November to March.

The hilly areas of Pangkor will also give you scope to climb the hill that soars in the midst of the island and get a panoramic view of the island — not forgetting a chance to get on an ATV and quad-ride all around the forested interior until the northern bays.

Marang and Pulau Kapas

Malaysians are passionate foodies, so it makes sense to dedicate your first day to a food crawl, starting with an early breakfast from one of the many street-side stalls around Marang. Terengganu is famous for its Thai influenced cuisine and the abundance of rice dishes: try the nasi minyak , where multicoloured rice is cooked with ghee and five different spices and usually served with chicken curry; or nasi kerabu – rice steamed with coconut milk, dyed blue and served with salad, fish or chicken curry and an array of condiments. Make sure you also pick up a bamboo stick of satar , a fish snack made from pounded fish, shallots, ginger, and grated coconut and barbecued in a banana leaf.

In the early afternoon, stop by the often deserted Kelulut beach to soak up some rays and to feast on the popular sotong goreng (squid fritters) that are covered in a mouthwatering light crispy batter and sold by many of the beach stalls. In the evening, head to one of the numerous restaurants serving a variety of Malaysian seafood dishes.

On the second day, take a 10-minute ferry ride from Marang jetty to Pulau Kapas. Spend the day snorkeling, kayaking or diving around the island’s crystal clear waters or simply just lazing on the white sand beach. You can also walk through the jungle via a stairway to the northernmost point of the island. Whilst there are a couple of cafes and restaurants on the island, it is better to pick up some snacks, fruit, and water before you take the ferry.

Tioman Island

Located off the coast of the southern part of Peninsular Malaysia, this is particularly a good choice for people coming from Singapore with ferries to Tioman leaving from Mersing which is a couple of hours drive from Singapore. Once at Mersing, it’s easy to take a 1.5–2 hour ferry (depending on exactly where the final destination is on Tioman) to the island.

The island itself is beautiful. It has a gorgeous coastline and a mountainous interior. There are not many roads and it’s all about exploring by sea or on your own two feet. With two days to explore, spend the first day exploring your surroundings. Enjoy your closest beach and take a boat tour to some great diving and snorkeling spots like Coral Island. This is easy to organize on arrival.

On day two, head to a different part of the island and take a hike. Some good options are to head to Juara Beach if staying elsewhere on the island. There is also a turtle sanctuary here. If staying in Juara, head across on the jungle road to Tekek on the opposite side and take a walk to ABC Beach visiting the Marine Park Information Centre on the way.

Sibu Island, Johor

If you get the midday boat, do a short hike in the afternoon to the mangrove shore on the west coast where there’s an extremely photogenic bleached pink old jetty. If you feel up to it, you can also hike around the whole island to appreciate the variety of its shoreline, which is pretty unique for an island so small.

Go scuba diving on the second day if visibility is good, or go snorkelling at nearby Kukus and Lima Besar islands. In the afternoon, continue enjoying the beach or go kayaking.

You have the last chance to try a different dive site or hike to a different part of the island on your final day, before taking the boat back to Mersing.

Stay at Twin Beach Resort to take advantage of Sibu Island’s iconic double beach section. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a couples getaway, go for the romantic Rimba Resort at the northern part of the island.

Kinabatangan River

The rest of the day you’re free to explore the area, relax and enjoy the restful sounds of nature. In the evening you do a second Kinabatangan river cruise around 4 pm and dinner will be waiting when you get back to your lodge.

There are many theories about why the city is called Kuching, with one of them coming from the Malaysian word for cat “kucing”. For that reason, some local Malaysians in Kuching self-proclaimed the city as the “cat town” and you can find various cat statues around the city. In addition to that, there’s also a cat museum situated in their North City Hall.

If you’re planning to go to Kuching, it is highly recommended for you to find accommodation nearby the Kuching Waterfront. Not only is it easy to get around the city from the area, but it’s also a hub for Malaysian culture in Sarawak. You can easily visit some museums in the area, such as the Chinese History Museum, Sarawak Museum, and Sarawak Textile Museum — not forgetting the Old Courthouse of the Brookes, the White Rajahs of Sarawak, whose legacy can now be appreciated across the Sarawak River at Fort Margherita. The Brooke Foundation runs a very interesting collection of historical artifacts, old maps, and memorabilia that explains Kuching, and Sarawak’s, ties with this dynasty of British rulers.

By night, don’t miss the night bazaar around the Waterfront, where you can also enjoy various local dishes. Their signature Sarawak laksa is super delicious, while some people would also recommend other local dishes like kolo mee or kueh chap .

If seeing orangutans in their natural habitat is also on your bucket list of things to do in Borneo, Semenggoh Nature Reserve is only around 30 minutes by car from town.

Gunung Mulu

Gunung Mulu National Park is tucked away on the island of Borneo, and a great place to visit for a long weekend. It is one of the biggest protected rainforest areas in this part of Malaysia and known for its extensive underground cave network, unique mountain peaks, and daily bat exodus. The entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most spectacular natural parks that we’ve seen in all of Asia.

Spend a day or two exploring the park’s impressive cave system which is the longest in the world by surface area. Lang Cave, Deer Cave, Clearwater Cave, Wind Cave, and Lady Cave are among the most famous. Inside you’ll find interesting rock formations and underground rivers.

One of the highlights of our trip was watching the bat exodus at Deer Cave. Every day between 5–7 pm thousands of bats leave the cave in giant numbers in search of food.

There are some great hikes in the area ranging from day hikes to multi-day treks. The Headhunters trail is an overnight hike through the rainforest and out of the Mulu area on an ancient tribal walking trail. It is an extension of the more famous hike to the Pinnacles, some eerie, blade-like rock formations on top of a mountain, a hard slog that takes 2 days to complete.

If you only have a few days in Mulu you’ll have to choose between visiting the cave systems or embarking on the Pinnacles hike. Both are really worthy activities on a short getaway to Malaysian Borneo.

The Danum Valley Conservation Area

If you are interested in seeing what one of the world’s oldest rainforests look like, the Danum Valley Conservation Area  is unmissable. Pretty much untouched and for years only reserved to scientists, this forest reserve lays in the center of Sabah, and makes for a perfect short trip. A weekend is enough: you can fly to Lahad Datu from Kota Kinabalu, and then arrange transport to the reserve.

The main activities here are trekking, wildlife spotting, and basically staying in touch with nature. The Danum Valley is a great place to see wild orangutans, leopard cats — you have to be lucky, but it’s possible — and many other smaller mammals like the endemic Borneo mouse deer, thousands of species of frogs and insects, and the commonly found Malay civet — they come to look for food near the park’s field center at night.

At last, the Segama River runs along the edge of the jungle, and it’s a relaxing place to take a dip when the temperature gets too hot. Since coming to the Danum Valley is not very straightforward without a tour, it makes sense to shop around and get a good deal that includes guides and accommodation. Malaysia is full of wonders. But some of them take a lot of planning. These 17 spots are perfect for a Malaysia short getaway that you could plan on the fly.

This is by no means an in-depth overview of each place, just a round-up to tantalize your travel-buds (get it – taste buds > travel buds?)

It’s a giant rundown of places you’ve prob never heard of but are worth checking out. I mean, seriously, we need to get creative in our travels these days. I also threw in a few luxurious short weekend getaways to splurge on. Because why not?

Peninsular Malaysia: 11 Options for a Malaysia Short Getaway

In 2019, Taiping was awarded the world’s third most sustainable city at the International Tourismus-Börse (ITB) travel trade show in Berlin, Germany. It ranked just behind Vancouver, Canada, and Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Not gonna lie. I almost spit coffee through my nose when I read that. I mean, Malaysia isn’t known for its green initiatives, cleanliness, or environmentally friendly practices. Coffee-to-go comes in a plastic bag, served with a straw, and sealed with a plastic tie. But apparently, it’s true.

Anyway, I digress.

Taiping is a lovely little city. But the center of attention is the Taiping Lake Gardens. It was a former mining site that was turned into a public green space by the Brits in 1880. Now it’s a gorgeous park and gardens, perfect for a stroll or picnic. It’s elegantly manicured with arching Rain Trees that appear to be sipping from the lake. It’s easy to laze the day away here.

You can also visit the Taiping War Cemetery dedicated to fallen WWII soldiers. Take a night safari at the zoo. Go on a walking tour of the historical sights.

Take a hard pass on the Perak Museum. When we were there a few years ago, the taxidermy animals were in an unfortunate state – eyeballs popped out, fur missing… you get the idea. There were even a few “original replicas” in the pottery department. It may have been sorted by now, but who knows. (If anyone has been there recently, please tell me it’s changed.)

If you feel like hiking and cooling off, check out Maxwell Hill, which is 1250 meters above sea level and great for bird watching. Or if you feel the need… the need for speed, go ATVing in the jungle .

If you don’t have wheels, you can take a tour from Kuala Lumpur , which makes it super easy.

About 40 minutes away from Taiping is the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve. There are boardwalks to wander the grounds and chalets if you want to stay for longer. But the best thing to do is hop on a boat and go searching for pink freshwater dolphins. There are only two river dolphin species globally, and one of them is here in Malaysia.

Just outside of Ipoh, Gopeng is an adrenaline junkie’s paradise. It’s home to rivers full of rapids, miles of caves, and limestone cliffs. We went white water rafting here a few years ago and had a fab time.

We’ve also been spelunking in Gua Tempurung . It’s a massive cave system that has an underground river running through it. It’s approximately 400 million years old and was used by the communists during the Malayan Emergency – you can still see their etchings on the cave walls.

Take the river tour, and you’ll have to shimmy through the narrow little tunnels, which open to caverns full of spiky stalactites and stalagmites. If you are claustrophobic, don’t take the more extended river tour, it’s not for you.

This may not be the best weekend trip in Malaysia to take the kiddos. Depending on their age, the rapids may be too intense. And the river tours through the cave are 4-5 hours, which might be too much for your little ones.

One thing we haven’t done yet is abseiling at Geruntum Falls, but I’m ready. Who’s with me?  

Another cool thing to do in Gopeng is to go trekking in Ulu Geroh, searching for the stinky but impressive Rafflesia flower.

This is not one of those budget weekend getaways for couples. But it’s a perfect place to treat-yo-self and indulge.

Not far from Gopeng is the Banjaran Hot Springs Retreat , a luxury property sitting in a 23-acre valley. The views are to die for – ancient limestone hills, lush rainforest, thermal caves, crystal caverns, waterfalls, and meditation caves. Oh, and this place is adults only.

Each villa has a private pool and geothermal hot spring whirlpool, so there’s that. But, if you don’t want to spring for the villa or even stay overnight, check out this day pass. Spend the day luxuriating, and leave when you’re ready. The day pass gives you full access to:

Head to Jeff’s Cellar, the restaurant inside a 260 million-year-old limestone cave. It looks right out of a TV set. Like the Bachelor could hand out his final rose there. Couldn’t get a more picturesque place for a date night.

Fraser’s Hill, Pahang – A Quick Trip to Keep Your Cool

Just like Cameron Highlands, Fraser’s Hill is fab when you’re looking to cool down.

Named after a Scottish guy who opened up a tin mine in 1890 but then mysteriously vanished in 1915. Not surprising, though, since supposedly he also ran an opium and gambling den, as you did back then.

When the Bishop of Singapore came searching for Fraser, he decided to make the area a hill station retreat to escape the valley’s heat. He created a “little England” in the middle of Malaysia with pubs and places for afternoon tea. The town has a vintage English charm.

Now, it’s an excellent place for birders and golfers who need a respite from the heat.

There are a few cool attractions in the area:

Forts and Fireflies:

Start your Selangor weekend getaway at the Estuary of Selangor. It’s lined with mangrove swamps. But these particular mangroves are home to thousands and thousands of fireflies.  Take a trip down the river at moonrise, and you’ll see all their twinkling lights in what feels like a fairy tale world.

I did this in Kota Kinabalu, and it was one of the most magical moments of that holiday, and I couldn’t recommend it more.

Before you hop on a boat, check out the historical Bukit Malawati, which dates back to the 18 th century. It was built by the Sultan of Selangor in the late 1700s for protection against the Dutch. But that didn’t work. The Dutch invaded, renamed it Fort Altingburg, and built a lighthouse.

However, not to be outdone, in 1785, the Sultan recaptured it > Bukit Malawati. Sadly, after all that tumult, it was eventually destroyed in the Selangor Civil War. There are still things to check out for an hour or two before your light show.

And there are rare silver leaf monkeys in the area, so there’s another reason to go.

Go on this Fireflies Night Cruise Tour or this one, and you’ll see all the cool stuff above, and it ends with a seafood feast. Not a terrible way to escape the hustle and bustle of life.

Bioluminescence for the win :

Or what I would do is skip the seafood dinner and add on the Blue Tears natural phenomenon instead. You can eat later.

Blue tears, also known as bioluminescence, occur when plankton glows blue when the water around them is disturbed. It’s such a cool thing to witness. I def would make sure it’s part of the night. Sky Mirror:

While you’re in the area, don’t miss Sky Mirror. It’s a unique natural wonder you can only see at low tide. When the tide is ideal, a sand bar emerges, and the water reflects a mirror image. It’s similar to Bolivian Salt Flats, Salar de Uyuni.

If you don’t want to bother trying to get there when the tide is just right, the Sky Mirror and Bukit Melawati Monkey Hill Tour will handle the headaches for you.

I bet you didn’t know that just two hours out of Kuala Lumpur is one of the country’s largest rice-producing areas. The lush fields are endless. But be sure to go during March-May or September-November when the paddies are in full bloom and as tall you. Otherwise, you’ll see a lot of nothing.

Once you are over the fields of green, head to Pantai Redang for sunset. Then grab a fresh seafood dinner from the Bagan fishing village.

Port Dickson , Negeri Sembilan – A Beachy Short Trip Away From KL

If you’re looking for a short getaway from KL, Port Dickson is your spot.

It’s only an hour from KL, but it couldn’t be more different. With 18 km of coastline, Port Dickson is a perfect breather from the big city.

Spend the day in the Cape Rachado Nature Reserve. It has more than 80 hectares of forest, sandy beaches, and a Portuguese lighthouse from the 16 th century. But the Blue Lagoon is the ultimate beach in the area for teal waters and soft sand.

One of the best reasons to go to Port Dickson is to stay in the Lexis Hibiscus ‘s over-water bungalows. This place is massive. There are 522 luxurious overwater villas constructed in the shape of a hibiscus flower, Malaysia’s national flower.

Each of the 800sf overwater villas has a private pool, steam room, and a glass floor panel to watch the marine life swimming below. The property holds a couple of Guinness records for the most overwater bungalows and the most swimming pools (643) in one hotel.

Kuantan is a laidback, off-the-beaten-track town that is often overlooked. Its old-world charm remains, even with the modern skyscrapers that loom overhead. But there are some cool things to do during this short trip in Malaysia.

The beautiful Sultan Ahmad Shah State Mosque, with its towering minarets, is worth a visit. As are the night markets and fishing villages.

If you feel like a sunrise hike, head to Bukit Panorama for the best views of the area.

A little outside the city are Sungai Pandan and Rainbow Waterfalls. Both require quick hikes, but Rainbow Falls is further, so if you are short on time, stick to Sungai Pandan.

Or, if you’re feeling beachy, spend the day at Teluk Chempedak and eat some fresh seafood.

Cherating, Pahang – A Budget Weekend Getaway in Malaysia.

Believe it or not, Malaysia has a surf spot!

Head to Cherating during the monsoon season (November-December) for some serious waves. The wide sandy beach is gorgeous and worth planting on for a few days. The rest of the year, the waves aren’t great, but there is a turtle sanctuary to visit.

The town itself is small, but the fishing village ensures you’ll be able to have a seafood feast nightly.  

If you are looking for a short getaway in Malaysia to reconnect with nature, check out Taman Negara National Park.

This national park was established in the 1930s and encompasses a million-year-old rainforest and ecosystem. It is one of the oldest rainforests in the world, older than the Amazon.  

You can take riverboat trips to see flora and fauna. Or choose from a bevy of hikes ranging from a few hours to multiple days. Either way, there is a lot to see there.

There are more than 380 species of birds in the jungle. If you are a birder, go in May or August because most of the fruits are in season. More fruit = loads of happy birds.

You can also spot deer, tapirs, wild boar, and possibly elephants. Walk on the Canopy Walkway, the world’s tallest and longest suspension bridge.

Take a night safari to make sure you eke out every last drop of wildlife spotting options available.

You can choose to go for 2 days and 1 night trip in Malaysia or opt for more time, but I wouldn’t try to squeeze it all in one day unless you have to.

It’s the best getaway in Malaysia (outside of Borneo) for nature lovers.

3 Island Options for Your Malaysia Short Getaway

If you are looking for relaxing places to visit in Malaysia, the islands are a must. If you haven’t been to Langkawi, go now. And read my ultimate Langkawi itinerary before you go.

It’s one of the few islands off the west coast besides Langkawi, so it’s easily accessible by us left coasters.

Yet, for some reason, so few people go there.

Unlike the Perhentian Islands , it’s open all year round but avoid the rainy season from Oct-Dec.

Pangkor Island is all about beaches and nature. You can go kayaking, hiking, or village-hopping, or just have a lazy weekend on the beach. When we were there, the water was warm, like bathwater and crystal clear.

Most of the resorts have feeding stations for the island’s famous hornbills. It’s incredible to watch these birds skillfully eat with that massive honking beak.

If you go in June, head to Teluk Nipah Beach at night to see the Blue Tears.

If you are looking for something extraordinary, head to Pangkor Laut Resort . It’s a private island just for the resort and one of the most breathtaking places for a Malaysia weekend trip.

If you are looking for a true Malaysian getaway, one of those castaway types of vacations, head to Sibu from April to September.

It’s not the easiest to get to since it’s further south than Tioman Island , near Johor Bahru, but usually, those are the best places to explore. Because of its proximity, it’s more popular with Singaporeans than Malaysians.

The island is part of a National Marine Park, so it’s a dream for scuba divers and snorkelers. It’s only 6km by 1 km with lush green forest in the center – you can walk the island’s circumference in a day.

The tiny island has fewer than 200 people, so you are really getting away from it all during this short trip in Malaysia.

This little island is smack in the middle of the Perhentians and Redang Island – its name means eagle in the middle. And just like its neighbors, the water is azure and the sand soft and plush.

Lang Tengah is a divers and snorkelers paradise. There are loads of rays, coral, reef sharks, turtles, and all the colorful fish you can dream up. It’s where to go in Malaysia for a short trip to escape the norm.

Even with its proximity to the nearby islands, Lang Tengah has a lot less tourism and development.

The Lang Tengah Turtle Watch Sanctuary accepts volunteers for a week or more. If that’s too much of a commitment, you can visit for a few hours and adopt a turtle.

Since there isn’t a whole lot to do, go with a group of friends and have the run of the place. Best time to go is from March to September.

Borneo : 3 Options for Your Short Trip in Malaysia

Sandakan may not be the first place you think of when you think of Borneo.

Kota Kinabalu and Kuching overshadow it for sure, and I get why.

Kota Kinabalu has all the adventures of the mountains and the islands. Kuching is a cute city with a river running through it. Both are must-see places in Malaysian Borneo.  

But what’s excellent about Sandakan is that it’s a jumping-off place for a whole bunch of adventures – it’s perfect for a Malaysia short getaway.

Start off with a visit to the nearby orangutan sanctuary – Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre . Spend the afternoon watching orangutans in the wild and learning about their plight.

Another adventure to tick off the bucket list is a night at Turtle Island National Park . Part of the experience is watching mama turtle lay her eggs in the sand. After they are collected and she is tagged, you’ll get to set a group of baby turtles free and watch them frantically scoot themselves into the ocean.

River Safari

Two hours south of Sandakan is the Kinabatangan River, one of the longest rivers in Borneo.

There is a lot to see, so spend at least two nights and three days exploring the area. The Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary is the place to see pygmy elephants, orangutans, proboscis monkeys, crocs, and zillions of birds. You can hike in the jungle, take river cruises and do night walks.

Don’t just show up. You’ll need to book ahead. Most package tours are all-inclusive and will pick you up in Sandakan, so you won’t have to worry about transport or anything else for that matter. This 3D2N Kinabatangan River Wildlife Adventure tour sorts out all the details for you.

April through August is the best time to go.

Bako is near Kuching and is full of wildlife, and unique rock formations called sea stacks.

There is a lot to see here, but the proboscis monkeys are the stars of the show.  Besides those long-nosed pot-bellied cuties, you’ll find bearded pigs, secluded beaches, mangroves, flying lemurs, waterfalls, and birds-a-plenty.

The hikes range in duration and intensity, and you can do them on your own if you wish. Otherwise here is a tour of Bako that is two days and one night .

Because it’s so close to Kuching, which has direct flights from Penang and KL, it’s an easy place for a quick weekend getaway in Malaysia.

Mulu National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, unlike any other in Malaysia.

The park has a lot of attractions for various levels of outdoorsyness. There are adventure caves where you’ll swim through ancient underground rivers. Show caves where you’ll see all the flora and fauna (read creepy-crawlies) that survive inside. And more extreme adventures where you’ll hike and climb for days.  

A few Mulu Highlights include:

The Pinnacles – fierce-looking knife-like rock formations jutting into the sky. It takes two days to hike there, so it’s not for wimps like me.

The Caves: Deer Cave has a massive bat exodus every night. I mean really massive. There are 3 million bats in Deer Cave, and apparently, they’re all starving around 5 pm when they swarm out of the cave in search of food. It’s Bat Happy Hour!

If you’re a serious hiker, you can spend 4 days and 3 nights climbing Gunung (Mt) Mulu.

There are no roads to get here. You can hike in (ummm no), take a boat (sounds good), or fly from Miri (even better and recommended by the park). This is def not the most effortless Malaysia short getaway. Still, if you’re an outdoor enthusiast and like to get off the beaten path, Mulu might be your happy place. This 3d/2n tour does it all for you, so you just have to show up and have fun.

Banjaran hot springs: been there, done that. Having extensively experienced hot springs in Japan I can say that Banjaran is as close as you can get it in Malaysia. But I did not like the food. Its standard was not in line with the level of the resort (and rather pricey). Getting a proper meal outside the resort is a bit cumbersome as the resort is rather isolated from town.

Malaysia is an incredibly diverse country with so much to offer to any type of traveler. While Peninsular Malaysia is known for its bustling cities, historical towns and pristine beaches, Malaysia Borneo is known for its diverse wildlife, lush rainforest and spectacular mountain peaks. 

Although I’ve traveled to Malaysia on multiple occasions, I still have a lot more to explore. That’s why I’ve asked some of the best travel bloggers to share their top recommendations for the best places to visit in Malaysia for a short trip. 

So here’s a list of 20 weekend getaways in Malaysia (that can easily be taken from Kuala Lumpur) to help you plan a short but relaxing vacation in Malaysia!

Getting around Malaysia 

Being well connected with other Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore and Thailand, traveling to and within Malaysia is very cheap and easy. 

I recommend using either Easybook or  12go.asia  to book your transportation so you can easily compare the price of train and bus tickets and hence get the best deal. 

Alternatively, if you don’t want to spend hours on the bus or train during your short Malaysia getaway, AirAsia offers very cheap flights and usually has some pretty awesome deals if you book well in advance. 

Another option is to book a private transfer from KL to any destination in Malaysia.

Weekend Getaways in Peninsular Malaysia

Penang .

Penang Island is located in the northwest of Peninsular Malaysia. With a diverse cultural heritage that can be seen through its temples and mosques, historical buildings, interactive street art and world-class street food, Penang, also known as the food capital of Malaysia, is the perfect place to spend the weekend in Malaysia for foodies and history buff. 

The cheapest way to get to Penang  is by bus. There are also direct flights available from Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and Singapore. The best time to visit Penang is between December and April. 

One of the top things to do in Penang is to go on a self-guided street art tour. The city of Georgetown is covered with an abundance of quirky and interactive murals that make for really fun photo backdrops!  

You can also take a tour of the Blue Mansion , visit Penang Hill ,  Penang Habitat , Kek Lok Si Temple, 3D Trick Art Museum or spend the evening on Chulia Street to feast on some tasty Malaysian food. 

Other   things to do include taking a dip in Batu Ferringhi beach, hiking Penang National Park or visiting the Botanical Gardens. 

Where to stay in Penang : The  Blue Mansion  is perfect for those who want to stay in a traditional Peranakan home. The hotel is located in the heart of Georgetown and includes free breakfast.

Melaka 

If you’re looking for a short Malaysia getaway from Kuala Lumpur that’s rich in history and culture, the UNESCO World Heritage city of Melaka (also spelled Malacca) is right up your alley! 

Melaka, sometimes referred to as the Amsterdam of Asia, is famous for its colonial architecture with Dutch, Portuguese and British influences, colorful river canals, a majestic floating mosque and night markets.

Although most people visit  Melaka as a day trip , there’s quite a lot to do to fill in a weekend, plus you can easily take the bus from KL to Malacca . Explore the Dutch Square to see all the major attractions such as the Christ Church, Saint Paul’s Hill, Stadthuys and A’Famosa Fort.  

You can also take a river cruise , hunt for street art in Melaka , visit the Maritime Naval Museum, take in the view from The Shore Sky Tower , watch the sunset at the Melaka Straits Mosque, have an adventure-filled day at the Skytrex Adventure and more! 

To sample some of the tastiest local dishes, make sure to visit the famous  Jonker Street night market which takes place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Where to stay in Melaka : If you want to stay in a quiet neighborhood not too far from the main attractions,  Hotel Arissa  is perfect for you. They provide clean and comfy rooms with a large double bed and a private bathroom.

Situated in the state of Perak, Ipoh is one of the most underrated getaways in Malaysia! While exploring Ipoh, you’ll come across colorful and interactive murals, cute alleyways and beautiful cave temples etched into the limestone cliffs. 

You can easily  get to Ipoh from KL  or other major cities in Malaysia by either bus or train. For the best weather condition, plan your visit between December and April but avoid Chinese New Year if you don’t want to get stuck in traffic on your way to Ipoh! 

Start your trip by heading to Mural’s Art Lane which is covered with dozens of colorful street art before making your way to the Old Town, the center of all Ipoh attractions . 

In the Old Town, you’ll find Concubine Lane, a little alley flanked by cute cafes and shops selling souvenirs, clothes and delicious food.  Market Lane is also not to be missed with its colorful hanging umbrellas and interactive murals. 

If you have time, make sure to visit at least one cave temple. There are over 30 of them dotting every corner of Ipoh, some providing the most scenic views. Three of my favorite temples are Perak Tong, Kek Lok Tong and Sam Poh Tong. 

Finally, you can’t say you’ve been to Ipoh without sampling some delicious egg tarts accompanied by a cup of Ipoh white coffee! Follow the locals to either Nam Heong White Coffee or Kedai Kopi Sin Yoon Loong and you’ll be in for a treat! 

Where to stay in Ipoh : If you want to stay in the Old Town, I recommend Dé Cafe & Rest House . Alternatively,  Grayhaus Soho Ipoh  in the New Town offers budget single or double rooms, inclusive of breakfast.

Kuala Lumpur 

Featuring the world’s tallest twin towers, bustling neighborhoods, impressive temples and mosques and an omnipresent food scene, Kuala Lumpur or KL is the perfect place to visit for a short vacation in Malaysia. 

The city is found about 50 minutes from the airport and can be reached by bus, train or Grab taxi.  

The starting point for exploring Kuala Lumpur is Bukit Bintang  where you can do some cheap shopping and eat to your heart’s content at the famous Jalan Alor Night Market. 

From Bukit Bintang, take the air-conditioned walkway that leads to the Petronas Twin Towers. I recommend visiting at night to see the towers light up just in time for the lake symphony show. 

You can also visit the KL Tower and KL Forest Eco Park (one of KL’s top Instagram spots ) where you can walk along a canopy bridge surrounded by the only remaining rainforest in KL city center. Aquaria KLCC , Chinatown KL , Little India and the  Batu Caves  are also not to be missed on any Kuala Lumpur itinerary as well as a visit to the impressive Thean Hou Temple. 

Where to stay in Kuala Lumpur : There are lots of options for infinity pool hotels in KL but if you’re on a tight budget, I recommend Gold 3 Boutique Hotel . It features stylish and modern rooms and is a cheap place to stay in Bukit Bintang.

Sekinchan 

Anyone visiting Malaysia is likely to stop by Kuala Lumpur. While the city is amazing, it can feel too busy for some. Luckily for visitors looking for a relaxing weekend getaway in Malaysia, there’s the small fishing village of  Sekinchan , located only two hours away. 

Sekinchan is considered the hidden gem of Malaysia. It wasn’t until recently that it started to receive an influx of tourists due to the popular TVB drama “Outbound Love”.  

What’s so special about this peaceful fishing village is the rice fields that lie on its perimeter. Acres of stunning and lush rice fields cover the eastern outskirts of town, stretching beyond the eye’s reach. When admiring these rice paddies, an unknowing traveler might even think that he or she is in Bali ! 

Just remember to visit when the rice paddies are in full bloom, or else you might not see anything at all. March to May and September to November are considered the best time to visit. 

Many visitors do a  Sekinchan day trip , enjoying the rice paddies during the day, relaxing on the Redang beach at sunset, and enjoying some fresh seafood before heading home. However, I would advise staying for a whole weekend to relax and enjoy some of the attractions of the neighboring town such as the  fireflies tour  and  Sky Mirror  in Kuala Selangor.

Where to stay in Sekinchan : If you’re spending the weekend in Sekinchan, make sure to book a stay at  Villa Chee for the best rice field view!

Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands is the perfect place to escape for a couple of days and enjoy some time in the mountains. It’s well known for its endless beautiful tea fields that cover the rolling hills and valleys.  

The local busses are a cheap and easy way to get to Cameron Highlands  and run regularly from major hubs such as Kuala Lumpur and Penang. 

You can visit all year round but January and February are the months with the least rainfall, so you may want to visit then. The best thing to do in  Cameron Highlands  is to explore the local tea fields.  

There are several hikes in the area or you can visit some of the tea plantations. BOH Plantation  is one of the most popular due to the beautiful scenery surrounding the tasting room. 

The region is also known for growing lavender, strawberries and other fresh produce with lots of markets and shops selling local goods, making it the perfect place to go for a short trip in Malaysia!

Where to stay in Cameron Highlands : A great option for those staying on a budget is The Cave Guesthouse which is a 10-minute walk from the town center.

Port Dickson

Port Dickson is probably one of the best weekend getaway destinations due to its close proximity to cities like Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. It’s also a region that’s well-known for its picturesque beaches, quaint colonial architecture, and breathtaking natural attractions. 

Within easy reach of Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, most tourists and locals get to Port Dickson by private transport . However, public transportation from Singapore is more straightforward with the availability of direct coaches such as the Golden Coach Express or KKKL Express. It’s also easy to arrange a transfer from Kuala Lumpur airport . 

January and February are the best months to  visit Port Dickson if you want to avoid the wet season. As this is the peak season, it’s best to visit in early March and perhaps to take note of the auspicious dates of the Lunar New Year as this is when locals from Singapore, Malaysia and other neighboring Asian countries would be on holiday. 

Aside from lying on one of the beaches across Port Dickson’s 18-km coastline, one of the best things to do is to pay a visit to the oldest lighthouse in Tanjung Tuan and use this location as a starting point for a hike through a verdant jungle trail. Once you’ve reached the peak, do not turn back. Instead, follow the descending trail that leads you to a secret bay with granite formations amid gleaming blue waters. 

Other things to do in Port Dickson include taking a boat tour and visiting the Alive 3D Art Gallery .

Where to stay in Port Dickson : Port Dickson has a variety of accommodations that suit all types of travelers. For those looking for a luxurious break, the Grand Lexis Dickson with its sea chalets and swimming pools is highly recommended. A cheaper option would be the Glory Beach Resort with its serviced apartments, pool, and private beach.

Johor Bahru  

Johor Bahru is located in the southernmost point of Malaysia – just on the border with Singapore and is great for a short getaway in Malaysia with kids.

The city has excellent shopping and restaurants and everything is much less expensive compared with Singapore . 

If you’re traveling as a family, Johor Bahru is the perfect place! Your kids will be spoiled for choice of fun – LEGOLAND Malaysia  or Hello Kitty Town. We spent the whole day in LEGOLAND enjoying the rides and other activities, and guess what was the best – no queues! You can fully enjoy the rides instead of waiting for them.

If this isn’t enough, you can always go from  Johor Bahru to Singapore , the trip takes max 45 minutes (by local bus), and Singapore has everything you can imagine! 

Where to stay in Johor Bahru : If you travel as a family to Johor Bahru, you should stay in the LEGOLAND Malaysia Hotel . Alternatively, if you’re traveling as a couple, the brand-new Z Hotel is a great choice! It’s conveniently located in the heart of Johor Bahru close to shopping malls and restaurants with mouthwatering food – especially at “Flowers in the Window” restaurant.

Island Getaways in Malaysia

Langkawi .

Located off the west coast of Malaysia, Langkawi is a stunning archipelago of 104 islands with waterfalls, gorgeous white-sand beaches, turquoise waters and lush rainforest. 

Langkawi is a great destination all year round but the best time to visit is between November and March during the dry season when the days are beautifully sunny.  

You can reach Langkawi either by air or by ferry – there are  direct flights from Kuala Lumpur , Singapore and Penang, or you can reach Langkawi by ferry from Penang Island or from Kuala Perlis on the mainland.  

There are heaps of fun  things to do on Langkawi’s main island  and it’s perfect for a short Malaysia getaway. Take a ride on one of the world’s steepest cable cars to get amazing panoramic views of the islands from the  magnificent Skybridge . After you’re done, make your way to Seven Wells Waterfall which is found within walking distance of the Skybridge or head over to Skytrek Adventure Langkawi for an adventure-filled day.

The  Kilim Karst Geoforest Park is a beautiful UNESCO heritage site and home to mangroves, macaque monkeys and eagles. 

If you like water sports, head to one of Langkawi’s many beaches to go parasailing or jet boating or jump on an  island hopping tour  to enjoy some diving or snorkeling. The island is also duty-free and there are lots of shopping centers selling bargain clothing and alcohol. 

Where to stay in Langkawi : There are accommodation options to suit all budgets here. Check out the mid-range priced Berjaya Resort – spacious chalets situated on the beach on the edge of the rainforest with restaurants, bars and an outdoor pool. For a more budget option, there’s  Chenang Inn  found only a few minutes from Cenang beach.

Tioman Island 

Just off the southeast coast of Peninsular Malaysia lies the beautiful island Tioman, ideal for a short vacation in Malaysia! This wonderful speck in the ocean offers amazing beaches, tropical forests and laidback villages.  

Note that Tioman can only be visited between March and October, the island is closed off to tourists during monsoon season (November to February).  

Getting to Tioman invariably involves a boat trip as there’s no airport (anymore) on the island. There are two jumping-off points for Tioman Island: Mersing and Tanjung Gemok. Ferry departures depend on the tide and weather conditions.  

Tioman is a great place for scuba diving as well as snorkeling as the ocean around it is marked as a marine reserve. It’s an excellent place to get your PADI as dive prices are very reasonable and you’ll see plenty of colorful fish and corals while learning how to dive.  

Other things to do in Tioman include relaxing on one of the pretty beaches, hiking through the jungle and watching the monitor lizards and monkeys roam around the tiny towns.  

Where to stay in Tioman : A good place to stay in Salang (my favorite village on Tioman) is Ella’s Place, a simple but lovely budget accommodation on the north side of town. There are small bungalows with fan or aircon, no hot water but with the tropical Tioman temperatures this isn’t really necessary.

Redang Island 

Redang Island is a gorgeous destination located off the east coast of Malaysia near Kuala Terengganu.  It’s located in a protected marine park and is perfect for people wanting to explore nature with its jungle-filled interior, fantastic coastline and coral surrounded exterior. 

There’s no bridge to Redang and only charter flights operate here which means you need to catch a ferry across from Kuala Terengganu or  Merang . Ferries are quick and easy and this is part of the fun of visiting Redang. Once on the island, you’ll generally get around by foot, kayak or boat since there aren’t many roads. 

Redang has two seasons – dry and monsoon. You should avoid the monsoon season as ferry rides to the island stop and the island basically shuts down. For this reason, visit Redang from late March to October. 

Most of Redang’s things to do center around nature. You can dive, snorkel, kayak, swim, explore the island by boat or trek across, play volleyball and other land and water sports.  

During the turtle hatching season from April to October, you can even release baby turtles. Of course, you can also relax on one of the gorgeous beaches. 

Where to stay in Redang : Note that Redang isn’t a budget destination and it’ll cost you more than the mainland. A good option for bargain seekers is  Redang De’ Rimba  as long as you don’t mind not having direct beach access. You can find more information about visiting Redang  here .

Pangkor Island 

If you’re wondering where to go in Malaysia for a short trip, make sure to visit Pangkor Island, Malaysia’s little local paradise. It’s the ideal island getaway since it’s situated only a few hours from Kuala Lumpur. Yet it’s still very overlooked by tourists. Pangkor Island is for those who seek quiet beach life and fun scooter adventures. 

It’s easy to get to Pangkor – from Kuala Lumpur, it’s a 4-hour bus ride to Lumut  where the ferry leaves for the island every half hour. You can visit Pangkor Island all year round, but you might want to steer clear of the rainy season from October to December. The island is also very popular among local tourists, so avoid the busy holiday season. 

The west side of the island has beautiful beaches and often accommodates the few tourists who visit, whereas the right side has more of a local feel. 

There are many things to do on Pangkor Island apart from relaxing on the beach. You can rent a kayak, go jungle trekking, visit the local fishermen’s village or simply go explore on a scooter. On the island, you can find a Hindu temple, a Chinese temple, and a floating mosque which are worth a visit.  

Where to stay on Pangkor Island : Pangkor Waterfall Beach Resort is a budget-friendly option for those who want to stay close to Coral Beach, good restaurants and wildlife.

Perhentian Islands 

The Perhentian Islands are located on the quiet east coast of Malaysia. Perfect for a short vacation in Malaysia, the islands are famous as a haven for snorkeling and scuba diving .

The Perhentian Islands are split into two inhabited islands known as  Perhentian Besar  (the big island) and Perhentian Kecil (the small island). Both offer different vantage points to explore the abundant marine and wildlife in the region.  

For travel to and from the islands, it’s easy to find boats leaving from Besut  and make sure to book in advance as accommodation is limited and somewhat exclusive on the island. It’s also best to visit during the dry season (April to September). 

One of the best spots has to be Teluk Pauh Beach where the coral reefs run right up to the sands, with ridiculously diverse marine life! Just a short swim out, you’ll find “turtle point” which is a famous snorkeling spot in Malaysia to swim with sea turtles.  

The beaches as well are pristine with golden sand, the interiors of the island are dense with forest and the wildlife, such as silvered leaf-langurs, mingle on the shores.  

Where to stay on Perhentian Islands : A great place to stay is the  Perhentian Islands Resort on Teluk Pauh Beach which has its own jetty for arrivals from the mainland.

Kapas Island 

Kapas Island is one of the best places you could visit for a weekend in Malaysia. It’s a stunning island located off the east coast and due to its hidden nature, it remains empty most of the year. Because of this, the coral reefs remain intact unlike many contrasting locations in Malaysia such as the Perhentian Islands. 

Kapas Island is best visited from March to October as storms can hit in the other months. It’s a short flight or 7-hour bus ride into  Kuala Terengganu from Kuala Lumpur . Afterward, take a taxi to Marang Jetty and a 15-minute boat journey to the island itself. Alternatively, buses are available in Kuala Terengganu from all major locations in Malaysia. 

One of the best things to do is to take a snorkel and swim on the colorful reefs. Alternatively, boat tours are available to further locations. If you’d prefer to dive, it’s very cheap costing less than US$ 300 for your PADI open water. If you prefer dry land, there’s a hike through the jungle to the beaches on the opposite side of the island. 

Where to stay on Kapas Island : There are many beautiful places to stay, but I have to recommend Qimi’s Chalet. It has a private beach where it hosts candlelit barbeque dinners in the evening. The rooms are like treehouses and have a rustic feel. But if you prefer something more modern, do consider Turtle Valley Resort.

Rawa Island 

Rawa Island, translated in the local dialect as ‘white doves’ is the very definition of peace. This picture-perfect tropical island resort within the Sultan Iskandar Marine Park off the east coast of Malaysia is perfect for a short relaxing getaway.  

The white sand, verdant groves and warm, clear waters feel like a world away from the stress of modern life. And yet this idyllic haven is just a 30-minute speedboat ride from Mersing in the province of Johor. Rawa Island is hugely appealing between February and October for a family break or romantic paradise getaway.  

Rawa’s main attraction is the opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural surroundings, to kick back and unwind on its soft-sand beaches under the never-ending sun. For those rare moments of activity, take a short stroll along its coastal walkways or snorkel its coral reef.  

If this isn’t enough, there’s always the resort spa for indulgent pampering as you gaze across the calming ocean beyond.  

At the end of each day, Rawa will reward you not only with a fabulous feast from the restaurants but also a splendid sunset. Ideal to enjoy with a glass or two of something cold and refreshing, Rawa will no doubt leave many wonderful memories.

Short Getaways in Malaysia Borneo

Kuching .

An easy getaway from Kuala Lumpur is Kuching, one of the most charming and action-packed towns in Sarawak and a perfect place to start a  Borneo itinerary . 

The only feasible way is  flying from Kuala Lumpur  or Penang with the cheap AirAsia flights. You can come to Kuching pretty much any time of the year, but avoid the period between November and February when the rainy seasons make the task of exploring the surrounding jungles a wet mess. Also, in July it’s the time for the iconic Rainforest World Music Festival — this is a fantastic music event, but also a time when Kuching is packed, and accommodation prices skyrocket. 

Kuching itself has plenty of charming lanes packed with bars and a beautiful waterfront set next to the Sarawak River. Take the bridge across to Fort Margherita, where an excellent gallery resumes the history of the Brookes, the White Rajahs of Sarawak.

In half an hour from Kuching is Semenggoh’s Orangutan sanctuary , a must-visit place to get close and personal with one of the world’s most endangered primates. 

There are also many national parks around Kuching: Bako National Park , set on a rugged promontory is ideal for a 2 days/1 night trip to properly explore its many hiking trails.  

If you come at the right time, the Gunung Gading National Park near Lundu is a perfect place to spot Rafflesia, the world’s biggest (and foulest-smelling) flower. If you still have time, a trip to Mount Santubong or the endlessly empty beaches of Tanjung Datu National Park will bring you off the grid in an already pretty offbeat Malaysian destination.

Sandakan might not be on everybody’s bucket list, but after visiting a couple of years ago, it now ranks really high on our list of recommendations!  

It’s easily accessible with  direct flights from Kuala Lumpur , as well as other Malaysian cities such as Kota Kinabalu.

The best time of year for visit is between May and August, but traveling in the shoulder months of April or even March means fewer crowds, cheaper prices and less rain. 

Not only is Sandakan a beautiful and peaceful little city with great food and friendly people, but it also serves as a perfect place to base yourself for a bunch of really exciting activities! 

Not to be missed is a visit to Turtle Island National Park , where you get to experience all of the important conservation efforts going on there while also enjoying an almost off-grid retreat on the paradise island! 

Alternatively, just south of Sandakan is Kinabatangan River , with a couple of nights’ stay at an incredible river-side lodge, a few wildlife river cruises, all of your meals and a visit to the Sepilok Orangutan Center often included in the tour!  

Where to stay in Sandakan : We chose to stay at Sandakan Central Hotel as we were wanting somewhere affordable but still in a desirable location, and we were pleasantly surprised by it!

Bako National Park 

Bako National Park is situated in the Sarawak region of Borneo and features some of the most unique wildlife and natural rock formations. 

The closest city to Bako National Park is Kuching. It’s easy to get from Kuching to Bako National Park as there are buses that go there directly. Take the number one red public bus that departs from the Kuching Waterfront area, opposite the Riverside Shopping Complex. 

It’s best to visit Bako National Park in the dry season from March to September. Keep in mind that it tends to get very hot in July, so make sure to stay hydrated. 

There are many hiking trails to explore, ranging from easy to more strenuous hikes. In addition to the hiking trails, wildlife is abundant, and visitors are guaranteed to see some animals. If you’re lucky enough you may even spot a proboscis monkey! 

Depending on the hike you choose, you may need to pay to catch a boat back to the entrance. The boat trip back is amazing though, as you get to sail past the Serpent Rock.

Where to stay : There aren’t many accommodations close to Bako National Park, so if you’re on a budget, plan to stay in Kuching – Imperial Riverbank Hote l is a great mid-range option. Kuching is a great place to stay as there are amazing food options to refuel after a day on the trails.

Mulu National Park 

Mulu National Park is difficult to get to, but a world away from regular Malaysia and well worth the trip. There are stunning caves, hiking trails, ecotourism activities and extreme adventures. Plan ahead with the National Park guides to include canopy experiences, a visit to the Deer or Clearwater caves and definitely arrange to be there for the dusk exodus of the bats from the caves.  

The night walk with rangers is definitely recommended! One of the joys of visiting Mulu is that the sheer numbers of bats mean that there are no mosquitoes!  

There’s no specific best time to visit although July to September is the dry season and will be hotter, so is best avoided if you’re planning on doing strenuous hikes – this is also the peak season to visit and will be busiest. 

There are three ways to get to  Mulu National Park   the riverboat trip (only in the wet season), hiking the several days’ long Headhunters Trail or the more practical way for a weekend getaway in Malaysia, by flying in from Miri.  The airstrip is walkable to virtually all accommodation and there are transport options also available at the airstrip.  

Where to stay : You can choose to stay inside the National Park in the park accommodation, which you can book directly through the Park offices  here  but this can be limited. A recommended homestay option that you can pre-book is Mulu Village .

Kota Kinabalu 

The State of Sabah in Malaysia is famous for its beaches, forests, wildlife and water activities. Kota Kinabalu , the capital city of Sabah, reflects the beauty of the state.  

Kota Kinabalu is a heady combination of art, history, shopping, beaches and parties. From experience, we can say it’s one of the most tourist-friendly cities we’ve visited. If you’re looking for a short break, a visit to Kota Kinabalu could be a rejuvenating experience. 

You can get to Kota Kinabalu from KL  by taking a 2.5-hour flight. Cabs are the best way to get around the city. The weather is moderate throughout the year with regular showers keeping the heat at bay.

Things to see and do include Masjid Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu, the City Mosque. Surrounded by water, the Mosque is a beautiful example of modern Islamic architecture.  

Another attraction is the Sabah Museum. They have several displays of history, art, textiles, ethnography, archaeology and even a heritage village. You can also visit Tanjung Aru Beach late afternoon for the most beautiful sunset, providing a gorgeous assortment of colors.  

There are many cool cafes and bars and The Waterfront is the most popular hangout zone for locals and tourists. If you’re in the mood for shopping, Imago Mall has a variety of stores. 

Where to stay : One of the best places to stay in Kota Kinabalu is Hotel Avangio  which is moderately priced with comfortable rooms with enough facilities, including a pool. 

Pro-tip : There are some amazing trekking, water sports and diving destinations around Kota Kinabalu.

Best time to visit Malacca

Malacca weather is warm and tropical year-round, so itineraries should be planned accordingly. Like, schedule outdoor activities for mornings and evenings, and save indoor activities for afternoons. Travelers who arrive in April, May or October may find cooler afternoons and less humid conditions. Regular rains can be expected during March and April and also in October and November.

While the time of the year to visit Malacca is important for any itinerary, so is the day of the week. Jonker Street Night Market is can’t-miss attraction, and it’s only open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.

2-Day Malacca Itinerary | Day 1

A morning walking tour in Malacca ’s historic district of Bandar Hilir is the perfect way to start a 2-day itinerary. Both Dutch Square (Red Square) and A Famosa are in the area, and these epic Malacca attractions are just a five-minute walk apart. A Famosa is the gateway to some of the city’s most historic buildings, and the entire district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Plan on spending at least four hours touring this legendary district.

Morning Walking Tour

• Windmill Dutch Square (Red Square) Melaka – wander through a sea of red buildings that housed Dutch officials in the 1700s. The complex includes several museums, Queen Victoria’s Fountain , Christ Church Melaka and The Stadthuys , where tourists can photograph a clock tower and view several exhibits.
• A Famosa ( Porta de Santiago ) – this famous gate stands at the entrance to Malacca ’s historic district. The gate, called Porta de Santiago , is the sole remnant of the once-sprawling settlement of A Famosa .
• St Paul’s Church – directly behind Porta de Santiago is a staircase that leads to St Paul’s Church , the oldest European-style church in Southeast Asia. The iconic church was built in 1521 and contains the tomb of pioneering Catholic missionary Francis Xavier, and it offers a stunning view of the Malacca City skyline.
• Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum – step into Malacca ’s history with a tour of a reconstructed palace and garden.

Afternoon: Peranakan Food, Plus Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum

Refuel from your morning tour with a scrumptious lunch of traditional Peranakan dishes. This regional cuisine is a fusion of Chinese and Malay flavors, and since the Peranakan people originated in Malacca , so did their food! Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum – Baba-Nyonya is a household name in Malacca , as it is the name that local Peranakan people sometimes call themselves. Spend the afternoon getting familiar with what Baba-Nyonya culture was like in the late 1800s and early 1900s at this one-of-a-kind museum.

Evening: Melaka River Cruise & Jonker Street Night Market

Taking a cruise down the Malacca River is one of the best ways to see the city at night. The Melaka River Cruise port is located just across the river (a 5-minute walk) from the entrance to Jonker Street Night Market . Tickets are available at the dock, and round-trip cruises last about 45 minutes.

Jonker Street Night Market – this iconic market gets hopping about 6 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It’s the one-stop shop for street food, souvenirs, handmade goods, entertainment and nightlife in Malacca .

2-Day Malacca Itinerary | Day 2

Now that you’ve cruised the Malacca River by boat, it’s time to peruse the area by foot. The second and final day of your Malacca itinerary can be spent eating a traditional breakfast of chicken rice balls, strolling down the Malacca River Walk , which leads to an authentic Malay village, and photographing stunning mosques, one of which looks like it’s floating in the sea!

Chicken rice balls is a breakfast staple in Malacca , though these tasty nuggets are good any time of the day and super handy to have as snacks while sightseeing in Malacca City . The dish is legendary in Malacca , and there are many legends about how how the dish originated. Some say Hainanese immigrants used to pack their chicken and rice lunches into compact balls so that it would stay warm longer and also to have “quick energy” on hand while working long and strenuous hours. Other stories claim the workers were too poor to afford lunch boxes, so the rice balls – sometimes as big as tennis balls – were the most convenient way to transport their meals to work. While the original chicken rice balls often contained both chicken and rice, the modern-day version is served a little differently. Now, the flavorful chicken is served alongside rice balls and various vegetables, with a spicy chili dipping sauce on the side. Three highly recommended restaurants in Malacca are Chop Chung Wah , Hoe Kee Chicken Rice and Ee Ji Ban Restaurant .

Mid-morning stroll down Malacca River Walk

The Malacca River Walk is one of the city’s most peaceful attractions, and taking a stroll down its pathways is a must-do activity on any Malacca itinerary. The 1.6-kilometer path takes guests through scenic natural attractions, restored historic buildings and Instagram-worthy street art murals. Many of the historic buildings now house quaint coffee shops, modern hotels and popular restaurants, so lunch is easy to find on Malacca River Walk , and you can even grab a few souvenirs along the way.

• Morten Village (Kampung Morten) – the Malacca River Walk leads to the entrance of Morten Village , a traditional Malay village containing more than 100 traditional Malay houses. The area is an important piece of Malacca’s cultural history and is a sight to see amidst the city’s commercial district. To preserve the site from inevitable demolition, Kampung Morten was declared a heritage village in 1989 under the city’s Preservation and Conservation Enactment. Tourists are welcome to explore the area on foot, but visitors should keep in mind that Morten Village is a residential neighborhood as well as a tourist attraction.

Afternoon: Mosques tours

Unique mosques and places of worship can be seen throughout Malacca City . You’re bound to notice several ornate religious buildings while trekking through popular neighborhoods in Malacca . While you’re out and about, you should make it a point to stop by some of the more historical religious sites in Malacca City , and you can’t miss a trip to the Floating Mosque at sunset.

• Cheng Hoon Teng Temple , 25, Jalan Tokong, Kampung Dua – this 17th-century Chinese temple features intricately carved woodwork and traditional architecture.
• Kampung Kling Mosque , behind Cheng Hoon Teng Temple – this historic mosque is admired for its Asian-inspired architecture and fountain.
• Sri Poyyatha Vinayaga Moorthy Temple , No: 5 to 11, Jalan Tukang Emas – this colorful Hindu temple was built in 1781 and is the oldest functioning Hindu temple in all of Malaysia.
• Melaka Straits Mosque (Masjid Selat Melaka) – often referred to as the Floating Mosque, the Melaka Straits Mosque is a picturesque religious site that is built over the waters of the Malacca Strait on the southern coast of Malacca Island . The mosque is especially stunning to photograph at night, as it is illuminated in a colored lighting scheme, but a daytime view also guarantees an Instagram-worthy pic.

2D1N Genting Highland Tour Package

For decades, Genting Highlands remains one of Malaysia’s most popular destinations. Situated just 50 kilometers away from the capital city, Kuala Lumpur, this Highland city-cum-resort makes for a convenient getaway – perfect for those city-dwellers who would like to get away from it all yet do not wish to travel very far for that purpose. Genting Highlands offers plenty of things to do, with its signature attractions being a world-class casino and a massive outdoor theme park. An 18-hole golf course and a horse ranch are also available here, as well as various nightspots promising an exciting nightlife in the form of international performances and Vegas-style entertainment. Surrounded by lush, tropical jungle permanently blanketed in a mist of cold air, there are also plenty of scenic hiking trails up here for those who wish to get off the commercial grounds and get back in touch with nature. In Genting Highlands , it’s no wonder so many continue to flock here every year, all year, either for a weekend break or an inclusive holiday!

DAY 1: GENTING HIGHLANDS ENROUTE BATU CAVES Meet and Greet at KL Airport, or pick up from KL City hotel and proceed to Genting Highlands with en route Batu Caves. A limestone outcrop located just north of Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves has three main caves featuring temples and Hindu shrines. It's main attraction is the large statue of the Hindu God at the entrance, besides a steep 272 climb its steps to view finally the stunning skyline of the city centre. Monkeys frolic around the cave, and it is a popular spot for rock climbing enthusiasts. Paintings and scenes of Hindu Gods can also be seen in the Ramayana Cave. Upon arrival at Genting, you may ride the Genting Cable Car.Genting, or also known as Resorts World Genting has an outdoor and an indoor theme park that offer tourists to enjoy fun-filled moments in the City of Entertainment. You may enjoy Genting SnowWorld as well. After that, transfer to hotel for check in and Free program. Overnight in Genting Highland. The outdoor theme park is closed due to maintenance works for few years *One way Skywalk Cable Car fee is included **Theme park entrance fee is not included

• Deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable, in whole or in part.
• Balance payment MUST be received at least thirty (30) working days prior to arrival. Failure to pay by the stipulated time will result in cancellation of tour arrangements without prior notice. Should guest need more time to remit the payment, written notice by email to [email protected] must be given 30 days prior to arrival.
• For confirmed booking less than sixty (60) days prior to arrival, 100% payment must be received within Five (05) working days to avoid the booking being cancelled by the provider automatically

REPLACEMENT OF CLIMBERS / REDUCTION OF GROUP SIZE

• Replacement of climber(s) is allowed with cancellation fee of RM100/person imposed.
• Replacement of climber(s) must be finalized at least 30 days before departure date.
• Reduction of climber(s) also means that the tour cost may increase due to cost sharing of vehicle and mountain guide. New quotation for reduction of climber will be issued.

CANCELLATION POLICY

• Deposit is strictly non-refundable.
• Cancellation more than 30 days from the date of arrival, the balance payment is waived.
• Cancellation less than 30 days or no show for the tour, 100% on the tour fare will be forfeited.
• Participant who cancelled the trip and return again will be subject to RM100 processing fee.

FORCE MAJEURE

In the event of any causes beyond the Company’s control including, but not limited to, acts of God, change of laws, war, civil unrest, fire, flood, earthquake or explosion, acts of terrorism, payment paid shall only be used to replace an alternative tour within the Company’s range of travel products.

TRANSPORT SUR-CHARGE

RM100/vehicle/way from airport/Kota Kinabalu to Kinabalu Park before 0600 hr or from Kinabalu Park to Kota Kinabalu/airport after 1900 hr.

RM50/vehicle/way for transfer from city to airport before 0600hr or airport to city after 2200hr

SURCHARGE FOR MOUNTAIN GUIDES

Effective 29 th May 2015, there will be a surcharge of RM15.00 per hour imposed for guide services extended after 4.00 pm on a normal climb to the summit of Low’s Peak and to be paid directly to the mountain guide in case of extended climbing hours.

HOTEL ROOM BOOKINGS

No hotel reservation is made during the time of quotation until a deposit is received.  The operator reserves the right to amend the accommodation to a similar class without prior notice.

INDEMNITY: 

Participants are not covered by Travelling Insurance.  In the event of accident, injury or death arising during the period of tour, Green Trekkers Sdn. Bhd. is indemnified and waived against all claims.However, climbers are covered by climbing insurance under Sabah Park.

We booked our 2D1N Mount Kinabalu Trekking Experience with Amazing Borneo only about 2 weeks in advance, but the entire team was quick to respond, gave clear instructions on the documents required, the itinerary, etc. (made easy as they provided access to an online portal), and ensured that we had peace of mind about the trek all the way up to our travel to Kota Kinabalu. Thank you to Lolaa for answering all my questions in a timely fashion!

We were picked up from our hotel near the airport right on schedule and reached the HQ near the Mt. Kinabalu base within 2 hours. Our registration, purchase of porter services and trekking poles, and provisioning of packed lunch were all very seamless. We met our guide, Jackie, and were on our way to begin the trek. Jackie always checked in throughout the 5-hour trek to Laban Rata to make sure we were comfortable and gave us updates on the distance left towards the end when we were getting tired, to keep us motivated. 

Our package included a stay at Sutera Sanctuary Lodges—again, everything was very orderly with clear guidelines on timing for food, electricity, etc. The rooms are non-heated but have all the basic amenities you need to stay comfortable (towels, bedsheets, thick blankets, pillows, etc.). The bathrooms are also clean.

The summit push was great as we were lucky to have good weather with no rain on the way up. Special thanks to Jackie for making sure we were safe, for pointing out the best pathways—especially on the tricky rockface surfaces closer to the summit—and for being patient throughout the entire trek.

All in all, I would highly recommend booking your Mt. Kinabalu trek with Amazing Borneo—you can be assured that the entire team will ensure you have the best experience and leave with happy memories!

The staff is kind and provides good service. You'll have an amazing experience, and the scenery is stunning. But first of all, you should prepare your knee; it needs more support.

Tatiana, Julie and Amy provided prompt responses and clarifications for all our questions prior to the trip. They were also very helpful when we needed to change our travel dates. The entire 2-day duration of the hike was very well organised with minimal waiting, good food and efficient transport between our hotel and Mount Kinabalu. Our guide, Safrey, was always punctual and very accommodating to our requests while informing us of good photo spots. He also had a wealth of knowledge about Mount Kinabalu, elevating our overall experience and allowing us to learn something new as well.

Unforgettable Mt Kinabalu Climb Tatiana, Julie and Amy provided prompt responses and clarifications for all our questions prior to the trip. They were also very helpful when we needed to change our travel dates. The entire 2-day duration of the hike was very well organised with minimal waiting, good food and efficient transport between our hotel and Mount Kinabalu. Our guide, Safrey, was always punctual and very accommodating to our requests while frequently informing us of the best times to meet and good photo spots. He also had a wealth of knowledge about Mount Kinabalu, elevating our overall experience and allowing us to learn something new as well.

Just came back from my 2D1N Mount Kinabalu hike with Amazing Borneo. Very organised.

A fantastic experience, everything was well organised from the booking to the drop off at reception, to the completion of the formalities. It was a tough ascent, especially as I am no spring chicken, but made it ok to the lodge, which was comfortable and served plenty of food. Then there was the final ascent to the peak at 2.30 am and I was one of the first to make it to the peak. The person I really want to thank is Byron, my guide, who was so kind and patient with me. I’m not sure I could have made it without him. He knew before I did that I needed to rest, he also knew when to push me on, and he nursed me through the really tough moments (which paradoxically were when descending). A big, big shout out to him. It is something I will never forget.

Amazing Guide/Porter. The tour group was responsive. May have some delays in response due to reception up there but rest assured they reply to every of your enquiry. Sarah the person that we Whatsapp with organizing this was insightful and the lady that met us there (I forgot her name) was amazing at her explanation.

Emily organises and plan for our Climb to Mt K and also my family getaway while I climb. Everything was taken into consideration from transport to meals to timing was perfect. All contingencies was also plan for eg delay in arrival back from climb, etc. etc. Eddy fetch us from airport, arrange our dinner and check us in at almost 11pm at Kinabalu Park. And back to airport with perfect timing on our 5th day. The ever friendly duo, Julie & Neavilla arrange our pre n post hike patiently and ensure everything is in place. Carl our guide was so patience and pace us to perfection. We reach Laban Rata by 1.40pm (longer rest) and summit at 5.45am. At a pace that we are so comfortable with. Fikri arrange our post hike. And even took care of my family by sending them to their hotel first in KK Town knowing that we may be late descending down. This by the way was his own initiatives and making sure that they are comfortable. Richard brought us to our Island hopping and patiently entertain 5 limping warriors with muscle ache the after effect of Kinabalu hike. Meticulously and well-thought itinerary. Everyone’s safety and well-being were well looked after throughout the entire trip. Trip included a 2D1N trek to the summit of Mt Kinabalu. This was a first time experience for some of us but Julie, Neavilla (pre-hike arrangement) and Carl (guide)ensured the entire process was smooth. Special mention to Carl’s guidance through the track. He was always watching out for us and paced us consistently to the way up and down. Eddie and Fikri were punctual and proactive in securing all transport arrangements. Post-hike Richard took us to a half-day island hopping. He gave clear instructions and followed us througout the trip. A short and fulfilling break that was made possible by Richard. A last minute decision to trek Mt KK and able to secured the slot within 3 days confirmation. The company is professional via email and whats app. The hassle free arrangment make the trip perfect. The climb to Mt. Kinabalu is really a great challenge ad very god experience. Sample Itinerary

Kota kinabalu/ kinabalu park hq/ timpohon gate/ ascend mount kinabalu/ panalaban base camp.

• 0600hrs - 0700hrs:  Pick-up from your hotel lobby and depart on a 2 hrs journey to Kinabalu Park Headquarter. Collect your packed lunch.
• 0900hrs: Our guide will arrange for all necessary registrations, assign you a mountain guide and apply for your ID TAG.
• Remember to wear your ID TAG at all times.
• You'll then be transferred to starting point – Timpohon Gate – where your journey and quest to the summit of Borneo’s highest mountain begins!
• The climb will take approximately 4-5 hours.
• The trek will pass by different vegetation zones from Oak and Chestnut to mossy and eventually to alpine type of vegetations.
• Arrive Panalaban Base Camp @ 3272m and check into your accommodation.
• Buffet Dinner at Laban Rata Restaurant and overnight.

• 0700hrs:  Descend back to Panalaban Base Camp for late breakfast and check out.
• Trek down to Timpohon Gate for transfer back to the Kinabalu Park Headquarter (est. arrival 1300hrs to 1500hrs).
• Congratulations, you can now collect your Certificate of Achievement!
• Buffet lunch will be served at Liwagu Restaurant in Kinabalu Park.
• Transfer back to Kota Kinabalu City. Journey takes approx. 2 hrs.

• Do take note that your MyKad (for Malaysian) / Passport (for Non-Malaysian) will be required for verification during registration at the Kinabalu Park office. Please bring it along with you.
• Laban Rata Resthouse does NOT provide boiled water for drinking/refill to climbers. Coffee & Tea will only be provided complimentary during Breakfast & Supper.   However, mineral water, coffee, tea, and other hot drinks and Soft Drinks are still available for purchase at the Grocery Counter (Laban Rata Resthouse).
• Pendant Hut provides filtered hot water for drinking/refill to climbers.
• Check-out time for Laban Rata Resthouse is 10:00 Hrs.  Should you check out later than 10:30 Hrs, a Late Check Out Fee of MYR100/hour applies, to be paid directly on the spot.
• Effective as of 1st September 2017, the Tourism and Culture Ministry of Malaysia will be implementing a Malaysian Tourism Tax (TTX). Foreign tourists will be required to pay a flat rate of MYR 10 per room per night regardless of accommodation star level. The TTx is to be paid upon check-in. Malaysians or permanent residents residing in Malaysia are exempted from TTx and is required to present a valid identification upon check-in for the exemption.

Children below 15 years old must fill in the indemnity form upon registration at Park Headquarters.

Kinabatangan River Cruise: Best Tours And Everything You Need To Know

Heading to Sabah and looking for amazing experiences? Fantastic! A Kinabatangan river cruise is a great way to explore and appreciate this part of the world.

A Kinabatangan cruise takes you along the Kinabatangan River (or Sungai Kinabatangan in Malay). This river is Sabah’s longest at 560 kilometres and starts in Borneo’s interior before snaking its way to the sea. Its chocolate coloured water is surrounded by forest which wildlife call home.

Sadly, the stretches of forest that line the river are getting smaller and smaller as palm oil plantations grow and grow. However, the upside of this is that it makes it easier to spot wildlife along this river than in most other places.

There are lodges scattered along the river and many Kinabatangan river tours to choose from as a cruise here is a popular option. And for good reason. It’s a great way to see wildlife in their natural habitat in a very easy and accessible way. Plus, there’s some great lodges! This is one of my personal favourite Sabah experiences!

However, there is a lot of choice which can make it confusing. Below, I walk you through everything you need to know to have your perfect Kinabatangan river tour whether you are looking for a Kinabatangan river cruise day trip or a multi-night option. You can easily compare all the options and make up your own mind.

Why Book A Kinabatangan River Cruise?

As mentioned above, the banks of the Kinabatangan River and the river itself is home to a lot of wildlife. This makes a Kinabatangan tour perfect for any nature lover or anyone who wants to see everything Sabah has to offer.

It’s the one place in Sabah where you can see ten primates including orangutans, Bornean gibbon, macaques, proboscis monkeys and tarsiers. There’s also monitor lizards, crocodiles, wild boars and Borneo pygmy elephants. It’s amazing.

Small groups of mammals can be seen year round and it’s also a fantastic place for bird watchers. You can see all varieties of Borneo’s hornbills, pittas, kingfishers and more.

The good news is that this is all reasonably accessible too. It’s a couple of hours drive from Sandakan or Sepilok to the lodges where your river cruise Kinabatangan will start. I found everything well organised and easy (plus, very enjoyable!).

However, this isn’t an activity where you can just show up. For one, it’s impossible to get to one of the Sungai Kinabatangan river cruise options by public transport. You can take a private taxi, but it’s easier and cheaper to join a tour that will take you there.

You’ll also want to already be booked on a boat before you arrive which is why booking one of the Kinabatangan tours is your only real option.

You can read more about each of these options below. All details are correct at time of publishing but may change before you visit so check before booking that your preferred option has everything you want.

What You Need To Know About A Kinabatangan River Tour

The cruises leave twice a day in the early morning and late afternoon as these are the best wildlife spotting times. There are also night options. When I visited, I had a morning cruise at 6am – my favourite as the air was so still and relatively cool – and 4pm.

At different times of the day, you’re likely to see different animals, so ideally, you want to do all of them. This is why booking at least one night at a lodge to go at these different times is worthwhile if you can spare the time.

Longer is even better. The more days you are there, the more wildlife and better variety you’ll be able to spot.

Otherwise, it is possible to do a Kinabatangan river cruise day trip from Sandakan. I only recommend this if you really can’t spare any longer.

Cruises don’t necessarily stay just on the Kinabatangan River, you may visit its tributaries as well.

Lodges should include the twice-daily river cruises in their prices. Everyone knows you are here to do these cruises. Night cruises, walks and other activities may be extra or they may be included so make sure you read any details carefully.

Take binoculars, a great camera, a poncho or rain jacket and a torch or headlamp for night exploration. Good hiking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and mosquito repellent are essential too.

If you are staying overnight, bring cash (there are no ATMs). It can also be cool in the evenings so a longer shirt is a good idea. I recommend taking some snacks as well as this is a remote area, and there are limited options for food. Don’t expect good wifi or for your phone to work, although my phone worked with Digi at the Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort.

This area can flood in the rainy season (October to March) which can stop tours from lodges affected. Otherwise, river tours run year round.

Kinabatangan River Cruise Day Trip

Day trips visit Kinabatangan River for just one cruise which limits your chances to see a range of wildlife. If possible, I recommend you stay overnight. However, if you are short on time, here are your best Kinabatangan river cruise 1 day options…

Borneo Kinabatangan River Cruise Day Trip

If you simply want to get to Kinabatangan River and do a cruise and then return to the Sandakan/Sepilok area, this is your tour!

You’ll be picked up from your hotel from 12 – 1:15pm and driven to Kinabatangan River for your 4pm cruise. On arrival at the river, you’ll have a refreshment as you wait for the cruise to start with your local guide.

The cruises goes for about two hours and then you’ll have dinner (included) before you make the 2-3 hour drive back to your hotel in the Sandakan area.

Private Full Day Gomantong Cave and Kinabatangan River Cruise

On this private tour, you’ll be picked up around 11am and taken to a local restaurant for an included lunch.

On the way to Kinabatangan River, you’ll visit Gomantong Cave. This is about an hour and a half from Sandakan. Gomantong Cave is famous for its edible bird’s nests which are used in Chinese cooking. It’s also home to many bats. Thanks to dwindling bird populations, entry to this cave is now restricted so it’s not always possible to visit.

After exploring Gomantong Cave, you venture on the Kinabatangan River for the 4pm cruise to spot wildlife and enjoy your surrounds. After it finishes around 6pm, you can buy dinner at the lodge before the 2-3 hour journey back to Sandakan.

Kinabatangan River Cruise 2D1N Options

An overnight option is the best way to get to see the river at different times of day, and I recommend you do one of these packages if possible.

Borneo Wildlife Tour 2 Days 1 Night

This Kinabatangan river tour package is perfect for exploring what this area has to offer in a small-group and remote setting.

You’ll stay at Tanjung Bulat Jungle Camp which is owned and operated by the local tribe and proceeds help support local community projects. It’s in a more remote location so you are unlikely to be around other river boats when you go on your tour. This is helped by the fact that only 12 people can stay here at any one time.

This package includes transfers from the Sandakan area, dinner, breakfast and morning, afternoon and night cruises meaning you’ll get the best chance to spot different types of wildlife.

Pick up time is on day one around 12pm. You’ll have lunch on the way at a local restaurant (your cost) and will arrive at the lodge in time for the 4:30pm river cruise. This cruise goes for an hour and a half.

Dinner is included at 7pm before a one hour night cruise at 8pm. The generator for this accommodation is only on from 6pm – 10pm.

The next morning, you’ll be up early for the 6:30am one hour cruise before the included breakfast at 8am. At 9am, you’ll say goodbye and head back to the Sandakan area.

2D1N Tour with Kinabatangan River Cruise

This is a similar overnight option with stays at either Nature Lodge Kinabatangan or Sukau BackPackers B&B depending on whether you want your own room or budget dorm accommodation.

While not as remote as Tanjung Bulat Jungle Camp, you’ll still feel like you have got away from it all. No matter which accommodation option you pick, your Kinabatangan river tour price includes transfers, a river cruise, and a breakfast, lunch and dinner. You also get to visit some attractions in the Sepilok/Sandakan area.

You’ll be picked up around 8am from the airport or your hotel. The first stop is at the famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre where you’ll get to view and learn more about orangutans.

You’ll then have an included lunch at a local restaurant before driving on to your Kinabatangan lodge.

At 4pm, it’s time for your river cruise to spot wildlife before the included dinner.

On the second day, you’ll have your included breakfast then depart Kinabatangan for Gomantong Cave (if it’s open). After exploring this huge cave, which is home to swiftlets and bats, it’s back to Sandakan for a city tour visiting historic buildings like St Michaels Church, a Buddhist temple and Sim-Sim Water Village.

Lunch is included at English Tea House that overlooks the Sulu Sea.

You’ll be dropped off at the airport or your hotel.

The big drawback of this tour is that it only includes one river tour. Unless you are short on time so need to use these two days to also visit Sepilok and Sandakan, I would pick the tour above instead so you get the three cruises.

2D1N Package with Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort

This option allows you to book your tour direct with the accommodation, Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort. The great part about doing it this way is you can stay as many nights as you like.

The resort is well organised with set packages depending on how long you stay. Meals are included and food is good and filling.

Kinabatangan River Cruise 3D2N Options

A longer Kinabatangan tour package is perfect for when you have the time, and you want to spot as much wildlife as possible. The cruises are the same as the one night options, but you get more opportunities over multiple days to see varied wildlife.

3D2N Discover Kinabatangan River 

This tour package includes two nights at the Bilit Adventure Lodge, all meals and river tours twice a day, two hikes and transfers to and from the Sandakan area.

Bilit Adventure Lodge is one of the better lodges in the area, and you’ll have a well presented room that’s comfortable in a scenic location.

You’ll depart Sandakan around 10:30am with a pick-up from the airport or your hotel. Along the way, you’ll stop at a local restaurant for lunch. On arrival at Bilit Adventure Lodge, you’ll have a quick briefing by a nature guide and afternoon tea before your 4pm river cruise.

After the cruise, the included dinner is served and then you’ll have a night walk.

The next morning, you’ll be up early for your morning cruise. Today, you’ll have all three meals and afternoon tea included at your lodge as well as a guided jungle walk about the vegetation in this area and your afternoon cruise.

The final morning, you’ll have breakfast before your transfer back to the Sandakan area.

This is a great option for exploring Kinabatangan River.

3D2N Package with Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort

Packages include morning and afternoon cruises, walks and all meals. You can choose how long you stay and enjoy this area.

4D3N Sepilok Wildlife Tour with Kinabatangan River Cruise

This is a perfect package if you want to explore Kinabatangan River and Sepilok with everything included. It’s all nice and easy!

On this package, your tour starts with a pick up around 8:30am at your hotel in the Sandakan area or the airport. You’ll visit Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center before checking in at the Sepilok Jungle Resort and having lunch.

Next up is a guided walk at the Rainforest Discovery Center before dinner.

The next day, you’ll have breakfast and then a free morning until lunch. After lunch, you leave for Bilit Adventure Lodge, one of the best accommodation options around Kinabatangan.

You’ll have a short introduction by a nature guide before afternoon refreshments. This afternoon, you’ll do your first river cruise. It’s then dinner time. You can choose to do a night walk for an extra RM10 which can be arranged locally. You can also choose to do a tree planting activity for RM10 per tree.

The next day, it’s a 5:30am start for your morning cruise before returning for breakfast. You’ll have a guided walk to learn about the vegetation of the area before lunch. Your afternoon will be relaxing until your afternoon river cruise. Dinner is served and then you can choose to do a night walk for an extra fee.

On day four, you’ll have breakfast before checking out and being driven back to the Sandakan area. You can be dropped off at your hotel or the airport.
