Ducking under the low ceiling to climb on to the stage Nadine Shah, who is tall and made significantly taller by her high heel boots, looked back at the steps and gestured at them laughing and cajoling the audience to join in the joke. This is what its like watching Nadine perform. Its like you're down the pub with all her mates watching her crack out a few tunes while having a laugh.
Except the music is generally dark and brooding and often times ascerbic and cutting. Then her voice, tremulous, smokey, deep and practically perfect with all its quirks, sung in her native north east dialect simply takes your breath away.
We got most of the new album and quite a few of her older stalwarts. My favourite was the first encore, Divided from the new album. Nadine picking out the repeated two notes on her guitar subtly backed by just one additional guitar and delivering the lines with intimacy and passion. You could literally have heard a pin drop, or the hairs on the back of my neck standing up. Stunning.

Wow! From the outset of the gig to the passionate encore, this was a powerful performance.
Nadine's band played with so much tightness and control. Her amazing collaborator Ben Hillier, on drums, is a steadying force to the sometimes exuberant sax playing.
Nadine is getting even better as a live performer, if that were possible. Her vocals are something to cherish, as is between song banter, This covers some heartfelt insight on the latest albums song topics.
Nadine has never shied away from her struggle with in equality, loss and mental health issues and she discusses all with total honesty.
A sixteen song set covering work from all of her three albums, is superbly performed over the course of 90 min's, which seems to fly by!
Catch her if you can, you won't regret it!
I hadn’t been to an all seated gig at The Roundhouse before so I wasn’t sure what to expect.
This is often a good state to be in as the actual event regularly exceeds expectations
I first saw Nadine play on the IArena at the Latitude festival and saw immediately a huge star. Next time it was Glastonbury where I saw more of her passion and energy
Nadine Shah has a wonderful voice and writes strong songs full of passion and challenges. The Roundhouse gig was just superb. Backed by a great band which included Neil McColl who played with Boo Hewerdine in The Bible
Nadine wonderfully engaged with her audience which included a number of her family.
If you haven’t seen Nadine perform then don’t miss out, brilliant just brilliant
Saw Nadine at a Palestine benefit gig in The Social London. She sang about 6 songs and all of them were excellent performances - she sounded perfect and it was amazing to be able to stand just 4 feet in front of her at this show.
I'm a huge fan of all her records and this was my first live gig and it did not disappoint.
This is a tiny basement bar and so this was really an intimate gig and she was only accompanied by two of her band mates. The sound was excellent and I couldn't spot any missing instruments (listening to her recording afterwards, I can only spot saxophones)
Amazing, haunting, hairs on back of the neck stand-uping! An intimate treat in a beautiful venue. And her parents were there. New tracks off Fast Food were fantastic. As always, an assured stage presence, now matched by the lambast of the new 'bigger songs' like Fool. Can't wait for the new album which she said is drawing on the current political landscape (migrants).
My friends, my daughter and I all had a fantastic time at this gig. Nadine has a wonderful voice and amazing stage presence. She writes and performs songs about mental illness and the rise of racism in this country, amongst others.
Definitely not to be missed. Five stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I was really looking forward to how Nadine’s songs were performed live. I was not disappointed. Nadine’s passionate singing, complemented with a group of very good musicians, was just amazing. I drove home afterwards well pumped up!!!
Gig was cancelled at short notice. Hopefully a new show will be rescheduled. I would really like to see Nadine Shah in concert. It would be an interesting venue as well.

LIVE: Nadine Shah – Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh, 22/08/2024
Haven’t listened to Nadine Shah yet? Tusk, tusk…so many people were envious when I told them I was going to tonight’s gig, so many people were envious, and not just those who’d seen her before. Those who still have a chance to see her on this tour should get their acts together sharpish. You’ve been telt , as they say up here.
See, this year she’s released her fifth album and her most successful yet Filthy Underneath . It may have been born out of a very difficult few years personally, but it’s a compelling album that is reflective but crucially doesn’t wallow in self-pity. It has received universal acclaim and deservedly so. She’s back for her second visit to the Edinburgh International Festival (like a fool, I missed her here in 2021, but tonight more than makes up for it). Over the course of a sixteen-song set she’s never less than utterly mesmerising.
She opens with a performance of ‘ Aching Bones’ that I note down is beguiling (perhaps not an adjective that is used very often in rock journalism, but it utterly fits.) She barely pauses for breath as she gives us several more songs ( ‘Fast Food ,’ ‘ Holiday Destination ,’ ‘ Even Light ‘) before stopping to talk to the audience. ‘ Any locals in? ‘ she asks. Well, the city often swells to twice its normal size during August but it appears there are. Regardless of where we’re from, I can’t believe there isn’t anyone here who isn’t blown away.
Her band are brilliant, an excellent assembly of musicians who help deliver her atmospheric alternative rock to the stage. It’s not simply a recreation of the album, it’s rockier than on record. Perhaps the greatest moment is a glam-stomp version of ‘ Greatest Dancer ‘ (special kudos to drummer Evan Jenkins here).
And she really connects with her audience in ways that show she isn’t simply going through the motions. The way she dances and moves on stage in an elegant two-piece suit that says she doesn’t care what anyone thinks.
There’s a young girl, who can’t be more than seven years old, on the front for what might well be her first concert ever. On spotting her, Shah catches her eye and winks, and let’s her know as she goes on with her performance that she’s spotted her. She catches my eye too, although I think by the end of the gig everyone in the audience probably thinks that she’s met their eye.
A striking performance by a truly original artist. As we get up to leave, the lady sitting next to me is so moved, unprompted she talks to me and tells me that she didn’t know anything about Nadine Shah before the performance but she’s utterly impressed. I think she’ll be back soon, too. I’d felt ill earlier in the day and wasn’t sure if I would make it; I’m so glad I did.

Nadine Shah Shares New Video & Announces New Album and UK Tour
Home » Nadine Shah Shares New Video & Announces New Album and UK Tour
Nadine Shah’s fifth album Filthy Underneath will be released on 23 February as the inaugural release on EMI North. Following lead single ‘ Topless Mother ‘ – which went straight onto the BBC 6Music A-List – she has today shared the second single to be taken from the album, ‘Twenty Things’. Following her recent sold out preview show at London’s Lower Third, Nadine has also today announced a full UK headline tour for April/May 2024 with dates including a show at London’s Heaven on 2 May as well as Newcastle, Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham. Full dates and tickets can be found below.
Speaking of ‘Twenty Things’ Nadine says: “It’s a love letter of sorts, to the people I met whilst in recovery. No-one tells you that you’ll end up feeling so deeply for the people you meet there. What makes it more intense is the fact that you know, statistically, that not everyone is going to make it once they’ve left the place. Some of the most unspeakable things had happened to these people and equally some of the most heinous things were done by them. You’re supposed to love the sinner and hate the sin. I loved them all.”
Three years might seem like a prolonged absence to some people, but it’s also a period of time in which the apparatus that holds your world in place can be dismantled and reassembled so that you can keep living, keep creating. Filthy Underneath chronicles a period of unprecedented turbulence in Nadine Shah’s life. And yet, the experience of listening to it is oddly life-affirming – a parade of ghosts spanning the entirety of Nadine’s thirty-seven years, moving with balletic beauty to the music that Nadine and long-time co-writer and producer Ben Hillier have created around them, with renewed emphasis on placing melody and movement front and centre.

Nadine Shah shares “love letter to people met in recovery” on new single ‘Twenty Things’
Shah has also announced a new UK tour
Nadine Shah has released ‘Twenty Things’, the second single from her upcoming full-length, ‘Filthy Underneath’ .

Upon a hypnotic groove, dramatic piano stabs and a gloomy sonic atmosphere, Shah recounts various colourful characters who appear to hide darker secrets. In the second verse, she sings: “They’re laying flowers by the bus stop / Some poor old junkie’s lucks up / Took a man and woman on the same day / His right leg shorter than the other / The second eldest brother / Goes to see his mother every Sunday ”.
In a press release, Shah expressed that the sombre track was inspired by a slate of characters she encountered “whilst in recovery”. “No-one tells you that you’ll end up feeling so deeply for the people you meet there,” she wrote. “What makes it more intense is the fact that you know, statistically, that not everyone is going to make it once they’ve left the place.”
“Some of the most unspeakable things had happened to these people and equally some of the most heinous things were done by them. You’re supposed to love the sinner and hate the sin. I loved them all,” she added.
Watch Shah’s mostly black-and-white video for the track, directed by Sel MacLean, below:
In addition to releasing ‘Twenty Things’, Shah has announced a five-date headlining tour across the UK in Spring 2024, beginning in Newcastle’s Boiler Shop on April 26, and concluding in London’s Heaven on May 2. The full list of Nadine Shah’s 2024 tour dates is listed below. Tickets can be purchased from her official website .

‘Filthy Underneath’ is the singer-songwriter’s fifth full-length album, and will be helmed by longtime producer and co-writer, Ben Hillier. It is scheduled for release on February 23, 2024, and will be the first release from EMI’s North label , which operates in Leeds as the first major British label based outside of London.
‘Twenty Things’ follows the album’s lead single, ‘Topless Mother’ , which was released in October. Regarding the track’s inspiration, Shah commented: “It’s a song about a counsellor I worked with that I couldn’t get along with. I’m pretty certain the feeling was mutual. And I’m also pretty certain she’d find this funny.”
Shah has been playing a handful of preview shows in the lead-up to the release of ‘Filthy Underneath’, including dates in Brighton, Glasgow and London, aside from supporting Young Fathers on their UK dates.
Nadine Shah’s 2024 UK headlining tour dates are:
APRIL 26 – Newcastle, Boiler Shop 27 – Manchester, New Century Hall 28 – Glasgow, SWG3 Warehouse
MAY 01 – Birmingham, XOYO 02 – London, Heaven

Nadine Shah's First Performance in Moscow
December 11, 2018 at 16 tons club.
Selector Live and Pop Farm Agency Present: Nadine Shah’s First Performance in Moscow
Nadine Shah is a singer and musician from the north-east of England with unique Norwegian and Pakistani background. Nadine had to cancel her concert in March 2018, but she returns in December to perform as part of the Selector Live concerts and parties programme.
Her debut album Love Your Dum and Mad was released in 2013 and received much critical acclaim not only for its musical components but also its political message of raising awareness to those suffering from mental health illnesses.
Her second album Fast Food was released after a large-scale 2015 tour. Nadine turned to her inner world researching the nature of intimacy in complicated relationships. Nadine’s unique voice has been in high demand and has seen her collaborate with such artists as Portishead, Vivienne Westwood, The Camerata Orchestra, Ghostpoet, Charles Hazlewood, The Invisible and John Cale.
Her latest album Holiday Destination was released in August 2017 and was warmly received by both critics and public. It is a strong political statement where Nadine opposes right-wing nationalism, conservative government and refugee crisis.
Pitchfork says: ‘Her brooding post-punk is an unsettling backdrop for songs about the refugee crisis, Islamophobia, and poisonous politicians’.
Nadine Shah was nominated for 2018 Mercury Prize. The performance on December 11 will be the first Nadine’s concert in Russia.

Selector Live
Concerts and parties under the umbrella brand Selector Live have been held since 2013 to present cutting edge British music, ranging from UK Garage and Neo-Soul to Dubstep and IDM, to Russian audiences.
They are the continuation of the Selector radio programme that is broadcast from London to an audience of over 3 million listeners in 40 countries. The Guardian called Selector ‘the most curiously programmed music radio show in Britain’. Since April 2013, Selector has broadcast weekly shows on radio Megapolis 89.5FM.
Up to 2017 Selector Live events were produced by the British Council. Since 2018 all the concerts will be held with the support of The Cultural and Education section of the British Embassy Moscow.
Pop Farm is a Moscow concert agency founded in 2013. Among Pop Farm projects are Subbotnik Festival in the Gorky Part with Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Placebo, Hurts, Foals, Jessie Ware; artist management at the main stage of Afisha Picnic festival (Arcade Fire, Jamiroquai, MGMT, Suede, Kiesza, The Horrors), Ahmad Tea Music Festival (The Libertines, Biffy Clyro, PJ Harvey, Elbow, Wolf Alice, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Wombats) and solo concerts of various artists —Imagine Dragons, SIA, Ed Sheeran, twenty one pilots, Lorde, The Prodigy, The xx, Kasabian, Hurts, The Neighbourhood and many others. Pop Farm Agency also organized Russian concert tours for Zemfira (2016), The Offspring (2013), Gerard Way (2015).
