If you plan to visit Canada for a few hours, the day, or an extended period of time, below are travel tips and important details regarding required documents.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, or WHTI, requires U.S. and Canadian travelers to present a valid passport or other document that denotes identity and citizenship when entering the U.S.

U.S. citizens visiting Canada will be required to present one of the travel documents listed here:

• U.S. Passport Card
• Enhanced Driver’s License (Issued by New York, Michigan, Minnesota, Vermont and Washington only. Please note, REAL ID cards cannot be used for border crossings into Canada.)
• Trusted Traveler Program Cards such as NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST enrollment cards
• Special Audiences (Special documents for U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents, U.S. Military, Native Americans, and boaters; birth certificates for children under the age of 16.)

Canadian citizens entering the U.S. will be required to present one of the travel documents listed here:

To strengthen U.S. border security, the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) sets standards for proving identity and citizenship for citizens of the U.S., Canada, and Bermuda crossing U.S. borders. Who can travel from the U.S. to Canada?

Borders between the U.S. and Canada recently reopened to travelers more than a year after having closed due to COVID-19. Now, many who are eager to explore our neighbor to the north are left wondering what’s involved in a border crossing and what guidelines they’ll need to adhere to for a successful journey.

If you’re anxious to visit Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver or Calgary, here’s what to know to plan your U.S.-Canada border crossing, whether by land, air or sea.

Currently, Canadian borders are open to all U.S. citizens wishing to enter regardless of vaccination status. However, the requirements for entry will vary based on your vaccination status.

Fully vaccinated travelers no longer need to provide a negative COVID test for entry, but must still use the ArriveCAN app to submit mandatory entry information, including proof of vaccination, at least 72 hours prior to arrival and/or before boarding a cruise ship destined for Canada.

Not fully vaccinated? You won’t be able to visit Canada if you’re traveling for discretionary or leisure purposes. If you don't qualify as a fully vaccinated traveler but still need to travel to Canada for reasons other than leisure, you’ll be required to quarantine for 14 days, take a molecular COVID test, and register for a COVID test upon your arrival in the country, which you can do in advance to save time.

There are more than 100 land border crossings between the U.S. and Canada, and wait time to cross can vary widely.

At most crossings, how long you wait depends on the time of day and the day of the week. Some crossings have little to no delay at off-peak travel times, and others, like Buffalo, New York, can log wait times around 40 minutes.

If you want to set appropriate expectations for how long it takes to cross the U.S.-Canada border, check the Government of Canada website , which is updated hourly.

If you're fully vaccinated and traveling to Canada, whether by car, plane or boat, you still have to follow certain protocols. To meet entry requirements, you must:

Have no symptoms of COVID-19.

Have received all doses of a COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 full days before you enter Canada.

Upload your proof of vaccination in ArriveCAN , an app that provides border crossing info and stores important documentation.

Have your required entry documents.

NOTE: As of April 1, 2022, fully vaccinated travelers no longer need to provide a negative test for entry.

If you don’t meet all the requirements of a fully vaccinated traveler, you’ll have to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. You may also be selected for a random arrival test at some airports and land crossings. These may take place at the airport or a designated testing site, or you may be provided with a do-it-yourself kit that you can send in once you arrive at your final destination.

If you live in Alaska, you may sometimes have to drive through Canada to get to certain regions of the state. Unvaccinated Alaska residents who must pass through Canada for necessary purposes (i.e. not for leisure or recreation) may do so without pre-entry and arrival COVID tests, but they must remain in their vehicle while driving through Canada. They'll also likely be given a specimen collection kit when they cross a land border into Canada.

If you're leaving Alaska to travel to the lower forty-eight, or if you're returning to Alaska after being in another state, you may also be granted special permission to pass through Canada. However, if you’re not fully vaccinated you will need a negative COVID molecular test result to enter. You'll also need proof that you live in Alaska if you’re driving north, or proof of residence or employment in the lower forty-eight if driving south.

The key to a successful U.S.-Canadian border crossing is preparation. Make sure you know what documentation and information you need well in advance of your arrival at the border or the airport. Ensure everything is in order and uploaded to the ArriveCAN app, and be patient. Above all, travel safely.

First, you will start your trip in Ottawa , the capital city of Canada. In Ottawa , you’ll want to visit the Parliament, grab lunch at the ByWard Market, walk along the Rideau Canal and test a delicious Beaver Tails treat.

Next, you’ll drive to Sault Ste-Marie making sure to stop at Marathon Beach (North Bay) and the Big Nickel sign (Sudbury). In Sault Ste-Marie, don’t miss the locks!

After a good night’s sleep, drive towards Thunder Bay . The drive is beautiful along Lake Superior. Make stops in Wawa, Marathon and Terrace Bay and enjoy the views. 

If you can, spend a day in Thunder Bay. Go to Terry Fox memorial, visit Fort William Historical Park, admire the view from Hillcrest Park and explore Sleeping Giant Provincial Park.

Then, you’ll make your way to Winnipeg with a stop at the beach in Kenora . Spend at least one full day in Winnipeg to go to The Forks, the Museum of Human Rights and maybe up to Winnipeg Lake. 

The next day, you’ll drive to Regina where you can walk around Wascana Center and visit Scotty the T-Rex at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum. You can easily spend an entire day in Regina.

You’ll then start your start day in the Prairies heading to Calgary . On the way, you might want to stop in Moose Jaw, Medicine Hat and Brooks. And by the end of your day, you’ll see the Rockies afar. 

Calgary can be your home-base for a few days to explore the Canadian badlands and the Kananaskis Country. From then, you can spend as many days as you want in the Canadian Rockies , hiking and visiting Banff, Lake Louise, Golden and Revelstoke.

From Revelstoke, you’ll have another long driving day to reach Vancouver. You can stop along the way in Kelowna and Hope.

2. Northern Ontario, Canada

Ontario is Canada’s second largest province, and it has so much to offer. If driving across Canada is not an option at the moment, but you still want to explore the country, you may want to consider visiting Northern Ontario along the trans-Canada highway. You can pick and choose from doing activities in the nature such as hiking or camping to visiting museums or historical sites. There is an activity for everyone in the family!

Known as the “Gateway of the North”, North Bay is located 358.5 km from Ottawa. Some of the highlights are:

Driving under the shadow of towering alpine peaks, past winding riverfronts and alongside plentiful wildlife is an experience all ages can revel in and enjoy; therefore, consider a scenic, multi-day route from Canmore to Banff and the famed Lake Louise. 

Furthermore, while there’s certainly no shortage of things to do to keep you busy for longer, should time permit, a 7-day itinerary is considered the perfect amount of time to tick off all the “must-sees” in the region, starting in the heart of Kananaskis Country and the town of Canmore .

It’s here – amidst the first day or two – that you’ll find ample kid-friendly activities, such as horseback riding at the quaint Cross Zee Ranch or a visit to Elevation Place (and indoor playground known for its massive climbing wall and aquatic center, complete with waterslides and a lazy river!). 

From there, continue west towards the charming mountain town of Banff . En route, don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for a chance to spot some remarkable wildlife creatures such as bears, elks or mountain sheep. During our cross-Canada road trip , when we visited Victoria, BC, we enjoyed some fish & chips at Fisherman’s Wharf. The kids loved the colorful vibe and the playground by the parking lot.

In addition, if your kids are old enough, you can enjoy the whale watching tours offered in Victoria. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you may not want to miss!

Follow this ten-day road trip itinerary , summarized below for the perfect family vacation!

5. Coast of Maine, USA

Undoubtedly, with some of the most stunning views in the United States, the coast of Maine is the perfect destination for your next family road trip. The drive along the coast from Kittery in Southern Maine to Acadia National Park is filled with historic lighthouses, rocky coastlines, ocean views, and countless opportunities for outdoor adventures.

It should be noted that a road trip along the coast of Maine will require at least 7 days, but if you can plan for a longer stay, it will be even better. When planning your road trip along Maine’s coast be sure to plan some downtime with the kiddos. The coast is full of outdoor adventures that will surely tire them out!

Day one of your road trip will take you to Kittery, Maine , where you can explore the historic ruins of Fort Foster and take a dip in the Atlantic Ocean. Then, for day two, you will head to Oquinquit to explore the streets of Perkins Cove, go for a relaxing stroll along Marginal Way, or hit the beach.  The next day will land you in Kennebunkport , home of the Seashore Trolley Museum. For the adventurous, you can enjoy kayaking on the Kennebunkport River.

Cape Elizabeth is next and will introduce you to some of the most stunning views found on the road trip. Cape Elizabeth is perfect for taking a stroll along the coastline and lighthouse hunting , with the Portland Head Light, Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse, and Twin Lights within close proximity to each other. Day five will take you to Portland, where you can enjoy the Old Port and visit the Portland Observatory.

Finally, days six and seven will take you to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park . With the scenic Park Loop Drive and plethora of family-friendly hikes, Acadia National Park is one of the most family-friendly national parks and the perfect conclusion to your road trip. You will also want to visit Bar Harbor to do some shopping and get a taste of some of Maine’s local seafood dishes. 

6. Virginia’s Blue Ridge Parkway

The iconic Blue Ridge Parkway that meanders across Virginia and North Carolina has the makings of an epic one-week road trip for outdoor-loving families. All along the way you’ll find hiking, biking and paddling, even disc golf. That’s not to mention waterfalls, scenic vistas and rock scrambles.

Moreover, the Blue Ridge Parkway begins where Skyline Drive ends, at the south entrance to Shenandoah National Park in Afton, Virginia . Make Humpback Rocks at milepost 5.6 your first stop for spectacular 360-degree views across Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Stay a couple of nights in nearby Charlottesville .

From here, continue on for the Peaks of Otter in Bedford , including Sharp Top, Flat Top and Harkening Hill. Pop in the Peaks of Otter Visitor Center at milepost 86 to get your bearings, then hike one, two or three of these gram-worthy summit hikes. Make a stop at Johnson Farm, a family farmhouse built in 1854.

Stay two nights at Peaks of Otter Lodge, which has an on-site restaurant and bonus views of Sharp Top. Enjoy easy walks around Abbott Lake and make time to splash in nearby waterfalls, including Apple Orchard Falls and Fallingwater Cascades.

Continue on to Roanoke for two to three days. Stop on the way at Explore Park at milepost 115 for biking, tubing, kayaking and disc golf. It’s easy to spend a full day at Explore Park. In-town, kids will love Center in the Square, which is home to the Roanoke Pinball Museum and Kids Square Children’s Museum.

Finally, make one last stop at the Mill Mountain Star , the world’s largest man-made star that stands at 100 feet tall. Hike or drive to the overlook for views across the Roanoke Valley. From here, turn the car around for the return drive to Afton on this road trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. 

7. Grand Teton, Yellowstone & Glacier National Parks

The best road trip for families is hitting 3 National Parks in one vacation: Grand Tetons National Park to Yellowstone National Park to Glacier National Park. Bonus points if you trek along in a RV.

Please note that you will need to allocate 2 weeks for this trip, and there are so many things to see and do along the way that maybe even that will not be enough. This trip is the perfect family bonding, smores burning, memory-making experience you should do at least once in your lifetime. The kids will spend 2 weeks unplugged and exploring nature. Bring your bug spray, buy some bear spray and start making some amazing stories to tell for the rest of your lives!

Day 1: Fly into Jackson Hole Airport and explore Jackson, Wyoming .

Day 2: Drive the loop through Grand Tetons.

Day 3: Choose your favorite hikes.

Day 4: Spend time around Jenny Lake, and hike Inspiration Point.

Day 5: Drive the southern loop in Yellowstone .

Day 6: Explore Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic Spring, and the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

Day 7: Drive the northern loop in Yellowstone, Mammoth Springs , and the boiling river.

Day 8: Drive to Glacier . This is 6.5 hours, so consider this a full day of travel.

Day 9: Drive on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, and stop at wherever strikes your fancy.

Day 10: Wake up super early, and hike to Grinnell Glacier .

Day 11: Spend the day exploring Lake McDonald .

Day 12: Drive on the Going-to-the-Sun Road from east to west during the evening and watch the mesmerizing sunset over the mountains.

Day 13: Do some hiking by Two Medicine area.

Day 14: Drive to the airport and fly home from Kalispell Glacier Park International Airport (FCA).

If you have more time, you can add more stops along the way. Helena Montana is a great spot to stop and explore the capital building. You can also see where the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers begin just a little north of Helena.

This trip is for the adventurous crowd, and with all the hiking and exploring it might be better for older kids , but seeing these three national parks will be the highlight of a lifetime!

8. Route 66 Road Trip

Route 66 is a classic road trip that is popular with all ages. It’s always been good for kids because there’s a whole load of quirky attractions along the road that kids love, but lately it’s also got the added attraction of being a real-life Radiator Springs from Disney’s Cars movie!

You’ll likely need 2 weeks to fully explore Route 66 with kids . There are 2448 miles to discover so that means an average of 175 miles per day to drive. My tip is to leave a couple of days at the end to enjoy some downtime in Los Angeles. If that feels like too long of a road trip with kids, then you can quite easily do a smaller portion of the route and still have a great time.

Day 1: Spend the day in Chicago .

Day 2: Drive from Chicago, IL to Springfield, IL. You’ll want to stop at the Gemini Giant in Wilmington and Pontiac Automobile Museum.

Day 3: Drive from Springfield, IL to Cuba, MO. Make sure to stop in St Louis for a day to see the Gateway Arch and for a paddle steamer cruise.

Day 4: Drive from Cuba, MO to Carthage, MO. Spend the morning at Meramec Caverns . Then, try the Drive-In Movie Theatre at Carthage.

Day 5: Drive from Carthage, MO to Tulsa, OK. Stop in Galena, Kansas to see the original Mater and in Catoosa, OK to see the Giant Blue Whale.

Day 6: Drive from Tulsa, OK to Shamrock, TX. Stop in the Rt 66 museum in Clinton, OK. You’ll want to see the inspiration for Ramone’s Garage in Shamrock, TX. Be sure to take an evening walk to see it lit up with neon colors.

Day 7: Drive from Shamrock, TX to Tucumcari, NM. Stop to see the Cadillac ranch in Amarillo .  Tucumcari is another good spot for seeing neon colored lights in the evening.

Day 8: Drive from Tucumcari, NM to Gallup, NM. Check out the Sandia Peak and trails for a day exploring and riding the cable car.

Day 9: Drive from Gallup, NM to Holbrook, AZ. Spend the day at the Petrified Forest National Park . Stay at the Wigwam Motel at night.

Day 10: Drive from Holbrook, AZ to Kingman, AZ. Stop to see Seligman which some say is the original Radiator Springs .

Day 11: Drive from Kingman, AZ to Barstow, CA. Stop at the old ghost town of Oatman to see the wild burros.

Day 12: Drive from Barstow, CA to Santa Monica, CA. See the pier and enjoy some time outside. This would be the official end of the road.

Day 13 & 14: Explore Los Angeles.

9. Utah’s Mighty 5

Utah National Parks also known as “The Mighty 5” make for one of the best road trips in the United States thanks to their remarkable scenery. 

Unquestionably, many travelers spend weeks exploring Utah’s landscapes. Although if you are short on time, you could spend 7-10 days touring Utah National Parks. 

You can begin your adventure in Las Vegas, home to a big international airport with connections from across the country. You can rent a vehicle in Las Vegas and make your way towards Utah, starting with Zion National Park , one of the most popular national parks in the United States. 

After stopping in Zion and spending at least 2 days there, proceed towards Bryce Canyon National Park and from there, take Utah Scenic Byway 12 to arrive to Capitol Reef, the least visited national park in Utah that is located in the heart of a remote red-rock country that boasts unparalleled scenery. 

You should plan to spend about 2 days in Bryce Canyon and 2-3 days in Capitol Reef. 

 From Capitol Reef, it takes about 2 hours to reach Moab , the adventure capital of Utah that is the home of Arches and Canyonlands national parks.

For a better and less rushed experience, spend anywhere from 10 to 14 days touring Utah national parks if you want to hike and explore the many hidden gems that they have to offer.

The Moab area alone boasts many spectacular hikes and hidden spots, and you could easily spend a few weeks there; although if time is short, you could visit Arches and Canyonlands in just a few days.

10. California, Nevada, Utah & Arizona

It is not news that toddlers and kids usually prefer to walk and jump around; it can therefore be challenging to make them sit in the car for a more extended period of time. But try a 7-day road trip starting from California – Nevada – Utah – Arizona and back to California. They will love it!

Day 1: Magic Mountain – Valley of Fire state park – Hotel in St George.

Magic Mountain is located just outside of Las Vegas. This is an open place for kids to play and take pictures with colorful rocks. Take a scenic drive in the Valley of Fire state park, an excellent spot for enjoying a picnic and a short hike. 

Day 2 : Zion National Park Visitor center- Zion-Mt Carmel tunnel – Bryce visitor center – Rainbow bridge – Yovimpa point – Black Birch Canyon – Poderosa canyon – Hotel.

The Zion visitor center has a ranger program for small kids and enough space to take a walk along the creek. Zion National Park doesn’t allow private vehicles; hence, you need to park cars around the visitor center and take a bus. Otherwise, you can drive through and enjoy the view from afar. 

Day 3 : Bryce natural bridge – Fairview point – swamp canyon overlook – Powell point vista – scenic byway 12 – Green river.

Bryce has multiple family-friendly trails like the Navajo loop trail and the Queens Garden Trail that kids will love. After Bryce, we headed to escalate, and it’s the scenic route. We made multiple stops like the head of the rock overlook, the hogback, homestead overlook, and stayed in the green river town. 

Day 4 : Green river – Arches national park – Moab.

Families with young kids who balance rock and double arch trails are perfect for fun. These trails are easy and take around an hour. You should note that parking is limited. 

Day 5 : Moab – Dead horse point state park – Canyonland National Park – off-roading to Moab.

West rim trail at dead horse point is scenic, don’t miss it. Canyonland has multiple trails, but Mesa arch is a very popular and moderate trail and can be done with kids. 

Day 6 : Moab – Wilson Arch – Monument valley – Flagstaff.

I recommend taking the Monument valley tour as this is one of a kind to explore the valley. Flagstaff downtown is full of restaurants and cafes and has live music on Friday nights in summer.   

Day 7 : Flagstaff- Sedona – California.

Sedona is like a hill station for locals due to pleasant weather and natural beauty. Our favorite trails are Fay Canyon, West Fork, Deadman’s Pass, Baldwin Trail, Sugarloaf Loop.

11. Pacific Coast Highway Road Trip

Do you love the ocean? A Pacific Coast Highway road trip is the perfect choice for families of all ages! This route spans 1,650 miles between Seattle, Washington, and San Diego, California. It is also one of the most iconic American road trip routes you can experience with your kids!

The entire drive will take anywhere from one week to ten days. You can make it as fancy (hotels + resorts), as rugged (campgrounds), or as mixed as you want it to be. Starting northbound or southbound doesn’t matter. Just make sure to check the forecast and start driving in the direction of good weather!

In Washington, you’ll experience rugged beaches, solitude, and a vast temperate rainforest among the Olympic National Park . This is a great time to go beachcombing, discover tide pools and low tide, and spend time in the quiet nature of the rainforest. In addition, plan stops at Hurricane Ridge, Rialto Beach, and the Hoh Rainforest.

Along the Oregon Coast, you’ll find a ton of walkable beaches and lots of family-friendly coastal towns. The north shore will provide lots of opportunities to get outside on Cannon Beach, the Seaside Promenade, and Hug Point . Furthermore, the central coast provides opportunities for learning and discovery. You can purchase tickets to visit the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, and don’t forget to stop by the Sea Lion Caves near Yachats!

Moreover, the southern coast is a great spot for hiking and camping. Stop by Samuel H Boardman state park for views on views (and easy trails), and see colorful dinosaur sculptures at the Prehistoric Gardens.

In California, you’ll hit some iconic and famous stops! Drive under trees and wander off the groves of the Redwood National Park . Drive across the Golden Gate Bridge on your way through Big Sur . Finally, stop at some dreamy coastal towns on your way to sunny San Diego .

It’s definitely the trip of a lifetime!

It's the absolutely gorgeous landscape that's worth immersing yourself in. This is an amazing region for cyclists and hikers or merely those who like quaint inns and a rugged rural landscape. Make sure to drive up Mt. Whiteface for a spectacular view.

Buffalo Buffalo is on the way back. This rust belt city was shelled out in the in 1970s and it's taken a long time to recover, but there's tons of life in the city right now, from start-up breweries to a burgeoning restaurant and bar scene and a revitalized waterfront . The architecture and shopping have always been there, but now there's reason to spend a few days exploring a city in the process of renewal.

The Finger Lakes The Finger Lakes are what you'd get if you blended the Niagara region with Muskoka: a beautiful landscape but with the added pleasure of wineries and a more established food scene. There are loads of B&Bs spread around the area , as well as historic inns, and lakefront properties. As a longstanding tourist destination, there are also numerous museums and scenic lookouts to explore.

Detroit Like Buffalo, the Motor City is also getting cool again , but given the depths to which it descended, the vibe is completely different here as a DIY entrepreneurial spirit as reanimated the city. Yes the industrial ruins are fascinating, but its the people who have committed to bringing Detroit back who have ushered in food , art , and music scenes worth checking out.

Cleveland The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame turned 50 this year, so you might as well visit it to celebrate its golden birthday. Beyond this musical pilgrimage, you can eat your heart out at the West Side Market , visit the other Great Lakes Brewing Company , tailgate at Muni parking lot before a Browns game, or visit the surprisingly great Cleveland Museum of Art .

Toronto (Ohio) Did you know that there's another Toronto ? Located just west of Pittsburgh, this picturesque city on the Ohio River is the ultimate destination for Toronto nerds and can be tacked on to other trips in this direction or be considered a part of a winder exploration of the Ohio Valley, which has a scenic ruggedness and intriguing history given its industrial past.

After over a year of border restrictions, Canada is now allowing fully vaccinated Americans to visit —and a U.S. to Canada road trip is a great way to take advantage, while also avoiding the often-crowded airport experience. For travelers looking to head north of the border this summer in the privacy of their own car, these are nine scenic routes that we love, with tips on where to stay, eat, and more. The best part? Each of these Canada road trip itineraries has starting points in the U.S., so you can enjoy every bit of the drive.

Ontario's Niagara Horseshoe Falls

Niagara Parkway: Buffalo, New York to Toronto, Ontario

Just across the border from Buffalo, New York, lies the city of Niagara Falls , best known for being the home of the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. For those looking to extend their trip, travel along the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), which will take you from Niagara to downtown Toronto in 90 minutes (if traffic is flowing smoothly).

Where to stop:  Follow the Niagara parkway to the picturesque town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, where you'll spot preserved 19th-century colonial architecture. The Niagara region is also known for having dozens of wineries on the Niagara Wine Trail , and some are as close as 10 minutes to the border.

Where to eat:  The family-run  Ravine Vineyard Estate  has an on-site restaurant and general store-style gift shop offering a la carte selections, and pantry picnic essentials to stock up on between wine tastings.   

Where to stay:  Charming Niagara-on-the-Lake has several landmark properties like the  Harbour House Hotel and Prince of Wales Hotel . If your road trip takes you to Toronto, continue your trip back in time by staying at One King West Hotel & Residence , inside Toronto’s original Dominion Bank skyscraper, which dates back to 1914. 

Lake Louise, Banff

Icefields Parkway: Montana to Banff National Park, Alberta

The quickest way from the American border to Banff National Park in Alberta is to drive through British Columbia. From northern Montana, head north on the BC-93 highway driving through the small towns along the way. The Icefields Parkway links Lake Louise in Banff National Park to Jasper National Park , and whirls drivers through the Rocky Mountains, beside glacier-like icefields and along the Continental Divide. 

Where to stop:  On your way to Banff National Park you'll pass though several mountain towns brimming with outdoor activities, like skiing and waterfalls to visit; Cranbrook, Fernie, and Kimberly are all just off the BC-93 and worth pulling over for. Stop by the village of Radium Hot Springs , which is open to visitors year-round, for a dip in the Lussier Natural Hot Springs, or one of their thermal pools.  

Where to eat:  During your drive on the Icefields Parkway, dine beside the Columbia Ice Field at the  Glacier View Lodge . From the on-site Altitude Restaurant you’ll have spectacular dinner views of the mountains, or you can visit the more-casual Chalet for lunch fare. 

Where to stay:  Known as the “Castle in the Rockies,” the Fairmont Banff Springs was built as one of the original Canadian Pacific Railway hotels in 1886. Today, Fairmont also operates other historic properties in the region that include the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge . 

Mulholland Lighthouse, Campobello Island

Fundy Coastal Trail: Maine to Saint John, New Brunswick

Explore New Brunswick's 286-mile drive along the Bay of Fundy coastline to see the world’s highest tides up-close. Depending on the time of day, you can marvel at the tides two ways: by kayaking on the water when it's at its peak, or by walking on the sprawling ocean floor when the waves have recessed. The Bay of Fundy can be seen from Saint John to Moncton, or plan a visit to the otherworldly Hopewell Rocks , which were formed by tidal erosions and stand alone when the tide goes out. 

Where to stop:  St. Andrews by the sea is the midway point between Maine and the Bay of Fundy. For a short visit, wander down the town's main strip and along its historic pier; if you have some more time, wander through the 27-acre  Kingsbrae Garden  or play 18 holes at the award-winning  Algonquin Golf Course . 

Where to eat:  Dine at the  Saint John City Market , where you'll find locally caught seafood and other seasonal goods. For a sit-down meal, stop by  Bigtide Brewing Company  for craft beer and pub fare. 

Where to stay:  In downtown Saint John, the  Delta Hotel by Marriott Saint John  is conveniently within walking distance to the city’s best attractions and its famed  reversing falls , which appear to swirl backwards into the Bay of Fundy. For the resort experience, book a night at  The Algonquin in St. Andrews  by the sea.

British Columbia's Highway 99

Sea to Sky Highway: Washington State to Whistler, British Columbia

You can drive from the edge of Washington state to the mountains in Whistler in just over two hours, cutting through vibrant Vancouver along the way. The Sea-to-Sky Highway, also known as the BC-99, connects North Vancouver to Whistler on a picturesque coastal drive where the mountain and the water meet. Where to stop: To break up your drive, stop in Squamish at the Sea to Sky Gondola to get an aerial view of the region. If time permits, enhance your visit with a free guided tour to learn about the history of the land on the Spirit Trail .  Where to eat: Head to the Nicklaus North Golf Course to try and snag a spot on the patio at Table Nineteen for scenic views of Green Lake, and the descending floatplanes flying in from Vancouver.  Where to stay: Book a few nights in Whistler to explore this bustling mountain town. Budget-travelers flock to the boutique capsule Pangea Pod Hotel , located in the center of the main strip. For a lakeside respite, the Nita Lake Lodge is a stone’s throw away in Creekside Village.

Quebec City's Old Town

Autoroute 73: Maine to Quebec City, Quebec

While several of the New England states border Québec, the capital city of Québec City is in the Eastern part of the province, closest to Maine. This Francophone city feels more like Europe than other areas of Canada, with narrow alleyways and cobblestone streets. Continue your road trip along the St. Lawrence River to scenic Baie-Saint Paul in Charlevoix for country walks, cheese shops, and the Galerie d'art Iris .  Where to stop: Mark the Montmorency Falls on your map for a quick stop just outside of Québec City, on your way to Charlevoix. The magnificent falls tower 99 feet higher than Niagara Falls and adventurous travelers can explore them by cable car, a suspended bridge , or zip-line. Where to eat: Stop by the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac for an afternoon tea at the castle, or dine onsite at Champlain Restaurant or Sam Bistro.  Where to stay: Auberge Saint-Antoine in the Old Port of Quebec City is a Relais & Châteaux that has preserved relics from the archeological dig within the property. In Baie-Saint Paul, the Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix blends a peaceful escape in a charming town with sophisticated amenities and an onsite Spa Nordique Le Germain.

The Southwest Nova Scotia Route: Bar Harbor, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia

When the  CAT ferry  that travels between Bar Harbor, Maine , and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, resumes in spring 2022, you can get from coast to coast on this high-speed catamaran in just over three hours. RVs, pickups, SUVs, cars, tour buses, motorcycles, and bicycles are welcome aboard—making this the best way for road trippers to cross the Atlantic Ocean into Canada. Once in Nova Scotia, drive along the jaw-dropping coastline along the 101 to Halifax, and back down the 103 to the ferry in Yarmouth.

Where to stop:  Plan to make several stops during your road trip, in the small coastal towns of Digby, Lunenburg, and Mahone Bay. After Halifax, head to Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse to visit one of the most recognizable sites in Canada.

Where to eat:  A trip to Nova Scotia isn’t complete with indulging in fresh seafood. Swing by one of the stalls at  Halifax Seaport Farmer’s Market , or grab a lobster roll along the water’s edge in one of the small towns that you visit along the way. 

Where to stay:  Break up your drive by staying a night or two in downtown Halifax. For a touch of history, book your stay at the  Lord Nelson Hotel and Suites  by the Halifax Public Gardens. For a contemporary option, check out  Muir, Autograph Collection Hotel –slated to open in fall 2021 .

Emerald Lake, South Klondike Highway

Alaska-Canadian Highway: Alaska to Haines Junction, Yukon

The 1390-mile route along the Alaska-Canadian Highway takes you through the Pacific Northwest, from Seattle to British Columbia, and then into Alaska and the Yukon. For a shorter jaunt, take just the northern leg along the St. Elias Mountains and Kluane National Park and Reserve, traveling north from Alaska through Haines Junction. Where to stop: At the Thechàl Dhâl Visitor Centre , you can pick up hiking maps, register for backcountry camping, and learn more about Kluane National Park and Reserve. During the spring and fall, Dall Sheep can often be seen nearby. This national park is home to Canada’s highest mountain, Mt. Logan, the largest non-polar ice fields on the planet, and is part of one the largest internationally protected areas connected to Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park in British Columbia, and Glacier Bay National Park and Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park in Alaska.

Where to eat: There are several dining options in Haines Junction, but due to the secluded nature of this region you’ll want to pack a few snacks in a bear-proof container to bring on your drive. Rely on on-site dining options during your hotel stay, and healthy breakfasts and hearty family-style dinners at the Mount Logan EcoLodge .  Where to stay: The  Mount Logan EcoLodge  is a rustic escape tucked within the mountains, in a prime location for those wanting to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis during the winter months. 

Yellowhead Highway #16

Yellowhead Highway: North Dakota to Winnipeg, Manitoba

The Yellowhead Highway runs through the Canadian Prairie from Winnipeg, Manitoba, through Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Edmonton, Alberta. From the North Dakota border, drive up to Winnipeg for an overnight stay before continuing west toward  Riding Mountain National Park . 

Where to stop:  Spend a day or two in Winnipeg to explore the city. During your visit, see the Inuit art museum  Qaumajuq , in the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights , and  Assiniboine Park Zoo’s Journey to Churchill exhibit . 

Where to eat:  Under the direction of Chef Mandel Hitzer,  deer + almond 's menu offers a fusion of flavors. Hitzer is also the brains behind the winter pop-up restaurant  RAW:almond , constructed atop Winnipeg’s frozen river. 

Where to stay:  The  Inn at the Forks  is centrally located in the city’s tourist area within walking distance to several restaurants and the  Canadian Museum for Human Rights . 

Red Coat Trail Saskatchewan Badlands: Montana to Saskatchewan

The historic Red Coat Trail along Highway 13 stretches through the Prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Explore the midway section of the route in Saskatchewan, a short drive away from the Montana-Saskatchewan border. For the closest crossing to Grasslands National Park , head north along the 191 in Montana crossing the border in Morgan. Where to stop: Visit the wide-open plains of Grasslands National Park on your way from the U.S.-Canada border toward Highway 13. This national park is one of the largest Dark Sky Preserves in Canada, making it the perfect place to stargaze during your overnight stay.  Where to eat: Stop by  Harvest Eatery  in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, located along the Red Coat Trail. Their extensive globally inspired menu serves farm-fresh salads, family-style mains, and a kid’s menu to accommodate young travelers.  Where to stay: Stay within Grasslands National Park in a Parks Canada oTENTik . Crossing the border this summer: The CBSA provides tips this Victoria Day long weekend to help ensure a smoother trip for all travellers

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) reminds all travellers crossing the border this upcoming Victoria Day long weekend of what to expect at the border during the busy summer months, whether returning home to Canada or visiting.

This summer, travellers are returning to a border that is managed differently, with evolving COVID-19 requirements, which can mean delays during peak periods. The CBSA is working to mitigate long border wait times, but there are also things that travellers can do to make the process easier for themselves and other travellers.

Travellers can help reduce wait times at the border by coming prepared and by completing their mandatory  ArriveCAN  submission within 72 hours before arriving at the border.

The CBSA invests significant effort annually to plan and prepare for peak periods, such as the summer months. The Agency works with bridge and tunnel operators, airport authorities and travel industry groups to plan and review service requirements, enhancement opportunities, and required resources, so that we can deliver together the best service to all travellers.

The CBSA has also established modern processes to improve the traveller experience and manage volumes, like the International-to-Domestic and the International-to-International programs that significantly decrease connection times, as well as the  Primary Inspection Kiosks , and the advanced CBSA declaration option .

Key tips for all travellers:

• Ensure you are eligible to enter Canada  Foreign nationals must meet the entry requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and provide appropriate travel and immigration documentation . The final determination on entry is made by a border services officer at the port of entry.
• Understand the rules around COVID-19. There are still border measures in place for COVID-19. They vary depending on who is travelling--foreign nationals, returning residents or Canadian citizens. Answer a few questions to find out which requirements apply to you and if you can enter Canada.
• Travellers must ensure they have the most up-to-date version of the ArriveCAN app (consult the Google Play Store or the App Store for iPhone.)
• Travellers should print or take a screenshot of their ArriveCAN receipt and bring it with them when they travel.
• Travellers without a smartphone or without mobile data can submit their information by signing in online through a computing device. If travellers are unable to enter their information themselves, they can have a friend or family member enter the information for them.
• Have all your documents ready . Travellers should have the following ready to present to the border services officer: their ArriveCAN receipt; passport or travel documents , proof of vaccination; and identification for all persons in the vehicle.
• Plan ahead and check  border wait times . Travellers crossing the border by land are encouraged to plan to cross during non-peak hours such as early morning. The Monday of holiday long weekends tend to be the busiest, with longer border wait times.
• Entering Canada by water. Unless exempt, all travellers entering Canada by water, must report their arrival to the CBSA without delay. All travellers, including those with a right of entry (Canadian citizens, permanent residents and persons registered under the Indian Act ), must submit their mandatory information in ArriveCAN before, or when, entering Canada at a marine port of entry.
• Be prepared to declare.  Travellers returning to Canada should be ready to declare all goods purchased and/or received while outside the country. It is recommended that gifts not be wrapped as we may need to examine them more in-depth. Have your receipts readily available from purchases made outside of Canada.
• Residents can bring back tax and duty free goods valued at CAN$200 after being away for 24 hours, and goods valued at CAN$800 after 48 hours. There are no  personal exemptions  for same-day cross-border shopping trips, so be prepared to pay tax on those purchases and possibly duty.
• Declare any  foods, plants, or animals   such as raw poultry products and by-products that are not fully cooked, to the border services officer. There are currently restrictions on imports of live birds, bird products and by-products from states affected by Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in the United States. Also declare all wood and wood products (including. firewood and wooden souvenirs). Be sure to check the
• Automated Import Reference System  to help determine all specific import requirements.
• Declare all money or currency of CAN$10,000 or more. It is not illegal to bring such amounts into Canada, but it must be declared on arrival.
• Cannabis. Don’t bring it in. Don’t take it out. Transporting cannabis across the border in any form, including any oils containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or cannabidiol (CBD), without a permit or exemption  authorized by Health Canada  remains a serious criminal offence subject to arrest and prosecution, despite the legalization of cannabis in Canada.
• Advance Declaration. Air travellers landing in Toronto (YYZ) or Vancouver (YVR) may use ArriveCAN (Web version) to complete their customs and immigrations declaration in advance of their arrival in Canada. This feature will be expanded to other airports in the future.
• Know the contents of your vehicle. Travellers can consult the CBSA’s website for information on firearms and other restricted and prohibited goods.
• Use the latest technology. Upon arrival at selected major airports in Canada, travellers can use a primary inspection kiosk to verify their travel documents, confirm their identity and complete an on-screen declaration.
• Children. When travelling with children , it is recommended that the accompanying adult have a consent letter authorizing them to travel with the child. Border services officers are always watching for  missing children , and in the absence of the letter, officers may ask additional questions, to help them identify the relationship between the child and the accompanying adult.

Cross border shopping isn’t just for holidays anymore. U.S. retailers and outlet stores south of the border can create a powerful draw. Plus, who can resist a road trip?

Some Duty Free exemptions only apply if you’ve been away for more than 24 or 48 hours. If you’re just crossing the border for a day trip you won’t be able to save duty and taxes on spirits or tobacco, but you can still enjoy products such as fragrances, jewellery and watches. You just have to declare them along with anything else you buy from regular retail shops in the U.S.

Yes they can. Any purchases may be subject to tax & duty upon returning to Canada just like any purchase at a U.S. retail store. They should only purchase alcohol and tobacco they plan to consume in the U.S. (or gift to someone in the U.S.) to avoid paying high tax & duty upon returning to Canada.

Sally, Natasha and Jules are headed to New York for a week to meet up with friends. They want to pick up gifts for their friends and liquor for the party. Can they purchase gifts and liquor at the Duty Free before entering the U.S.?

They can buy 1L of alcohol each tax & duty free and can purchase more if they’re ok with the possibility of being asked by U.S. Customs to pay a very small amount of tax & duty on any excess purchases – see above. They can return to the U.S. with up to $200 each tax & duty free.

Top 10 Cross Border Shopping Tips for Canadians

The recent decline in the Canadian dollar has many Canadians wondering if t’s still worth shopping in the U.S.

In many cases, the answer is a resounding yes. However, to compensate for the lower Loonie, you’ll need to be a little more resourceful if you want to maximize your savings. To help you out, we’ve created a list of our top ten cross border shopping tips for Canadians.

1. Stay Overnight for Larger Duty Free Allowances

If you’re planning a shopping trip to the U.S., staying at a local hotel for one or two nights can really help stretch your savings, as duty free limits for Canadians increase the longer you stay in the U.S.

For example, Canadians who spend less than 24 hours in the United States aren’t entitled to a duty free allowance. If you extend your trip for longer than 24 hours, your duty free allowance increases to $200 per person, and for trips longer than 48 hours, your duty free allowance jumps to $800 per person. If you do your research, you will find that some hotels in popular cross border shopping destinations offer discounted rates and shopping packages for Canadians who book directly with the hotel (as opposed to booking with a third party website or travel agent).

2. Minimize Foreign Exchange Fees

One area where Canadians can lower their cross border shopping costs is by reducing foreign transaction fees. If you make purchases in U.S. dollars, you are going to have to incur a fee at some point to convert your Canadian dollars to U.S. dollars (and vice versa). However, the amount you pay to convert your money can vary greatly, from as low as 1% to as high as 6%.

Banks, financial institutions and other businesses that offer foreign exchange services make money by charging a commission to convert your money from one currency to another. This commission is often referred to as a “spread”, which usually ranges from 1% - 3.5%. Some foreign exchange services, such as credit cards and ATM machines, usually charge an additional foreign transaction fee of 2.5% or more.

You can cut down on your foreign exchange costs by following these tips:

• Use Cash and Convert your Money Before you Travel:  Cash can often be one of the most effective ways to make purchases in U.S. dollars. If you plan on exchanging your Canadian currency for U.S. dollars, we suggest converting your money before you travel to avoid finding yourself in a situation where you have to convert your money at an unfavourable rate. If you plan on converting your money in Canada, shop around first, as the rates offered by the banks can differ greatly, and many smaller foreign exchange services have better rates than any of the banks.  
• Stick to Credit Cards with No Foreign Transaction Fees:  While credit cards are a very convenient way to pay for and track your cross border purchases, be aware that most Canadian credit cards charge a foreign exchange spread ranging from 2% to 3.5% PLUS a foreign transaction fee of about 2.5%, which means your cost of converting money could be as high as 6% depending on your bank! If you want to use a credit card to make U.S. dollar purchases, you should strongly consider getting one of the only no-foreign transaction fee credit cards available in Canada which offers both the convenience of a credit card and lower foreign exchange fees.  
• Avoid ATM Machines in the U.S:  While they can be convenient, ATM machines should only be used as a last resort to access foreign currency if you are in a pinch, as they often charge some of the highest currency conversion spreads in addition to other fees that can really add up. You may not even be aware of how much you are paying until you get home and see your next bank statement.

3. Join Retailer Email Lists and Loyalty Programs

Many retailers offer a one-time discount or coupon if you sign up for their email list or loyalty program. Signing up is fast, easy and free, and the discounts can be significant (5, 10 or even 15%). We suggest looking for these offers before you head to the U.S. to shop, as some retailers require you to sign up online, print your coupon and redeem it when you go shopping, while others allow you to sign up in-store.

Once you receive your discount, you can always opt out of these programs if you find you are receiving too many unwanted emails.

4. Fill up on Gas in the U.S.

If you are driving to the U.S. to go shopping, we suggest filling up on gas as often as possible south of the border, as gas is usually 20 – 25% cheaper in the U.S. than Canada. 5. Time your Shopping Trips Around Sales

While there are still great every day savings to be had in the U.S., Canadians can really hypercharge their cross border savings by timing their shopping trips around sales at U.S. malls, department stores and retailers, which usually offer significantly steeper discounts and greater selections than Canadian sales.

There are many sales to watch for throughout the year (at least 10 - 15 big ones), including:

• National Holiday Sales  (Labor Day, Columbus Day. Fourth of July, etc…)  
• Seasonal Sales (Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall)  
• Event Sales (Black Friday, Back to School Shopping, Christmas, etc…)  
• Annual Retailer Sales (a number of U.S. department stores and retailers have big annual or semi annual sales) ​

6. Look for Coupons and Discounts

Many businesses periodically offer coupons and discounts that can help you stretch your cross border savings even further. And remember, these offers aren’t limited to clothing and electronics , they can also provide savings on hotels, dining, groceries and activities.

Some places to search for coupons and discounts include CrossBorderShopping.ca, mall and retailer websites and newspapers.

7. Shop in Tax Free States

You can save money by shopping in one of the following U.S. states that has no sales tax or offers a sales tax refund program for visitors from outside the United States:

Close to the border, Minnesota has no sales tax on clothing and shoes and Pennsylvania has no sales tax on clothing and shoes (as well as some baby products and toiletries). Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no state sales tax and North Dakota has a sales tax refund program for Canadians.

A little further south, Louisiana and Texas both have programs that offer sales tax refunds to visitors from outside the United States for purchases made at select retailers.

8. Shop Online & Ship to the Border

Canadians can get great deals by cross border shopping online with U.S. retailers, where prices and selection are often much better than in Canada. Unfortunately, the cost of shipping to Canada from the U.S., duties and taxes can sometimes negate any cost savings, so make sure to account for all of your costs before you order.

One way to avoid costly international shipping fees is to have your items shipped to a U.S. shipping address just across the border where you can drive to pick them up. There are many U.S. shipping address locations along the border that provide this service, some for as low as $5 - $10. This allows you take advantage of free shipping within the U.S. offered by many retailers.

9. Reduce Mobile Phone Roaming Charges

Using your mobile phone in the United States can cost you a fortune. We’ve all know the horror stories of travelling to the U.S. only to return home to a massive cell phone bill in the hundreds or even thousands of dollars. To avoid becoming a victim of outrageous mobile roaming charges from your carrier while shopping in the U.S., you can try some of these options:

• Turn your data plan setting to “off while roaming”: While this should help you avoid data usage charges while you are in the U.S., it also means you won’t be able to receive emails, access the internet or use apps that need updating. You also won’t be able to make or receive phone calls or check your voicemail without incurring massive roaming charges  
• Use free WiFi while in the U.S.: If you don’t need to make or receive phone calls, you can search for and connect to open WiFi networks while in the U.S. to receive data. Of course, you’ll be limited to accessing data in places where open WiFi networks are available.  
• Use Viber, Skype or a similar service for phone calls: These services allow you to make phone calls to other users for free or at a very low cost, but again, you will need an open WiFi connection to use them and you won’t be able to receive incoming calls on your mobile phone number without incurring big data roaming charges from your carrier.  
• Get a U.S. SIM card: There are a number of great services that offer U.S. SIM cards for Canadians. These SIM cards give you a U.S. phone number and offer deep discounts on phone calls and data. However, they don’t allow you to use your Canadian phone number and can sometimes be a little confusing to configure the first time.  
• Get a mobile roaming package with your cell phone carrier: As a last resort, you can get always get a roaming package from your mobile carrier, although these packages are usually very expensive, inflexible and don’t include much talk time or data.

10. Do your Research in Advance

Advance planning for your cross border shopping trip can save you time and money. Where possible, decide which malls and retailers you want to visit ahead of time and prepare a wish list of the items you want to buy so you can compare prices for these items in the U.S. and Canada before your shopping trip. This will give you an idea of how much you can save, which items are worth purchasing in the U.S. and which items you are better off buying in Canada.

What Americans Need to Know Before Visiting Canada

Most important: You must have a passport or equivalent

In many ways, Canada is much like the United States, and historically, the two countries have been casual about crossing back and forth over the border, almost like we are one big happy family. 

But even though the U.S. and Canada maintain a healthy friendship, certain restrictions and differences in laws can affect a U.S. citizen visiting Canada. 

Before you head north , check out the nine things you should know about visiting Canada. In addition, get the lowdown on  Canada's top attractions , the cost of traveling , and common  myths and misconceptions .

You Must Have a Passport

All U.S. citizens arriving in Canada must have a valid passport or passport equivalent, such as a passport card or NEXUS card . Gone are the days of casual cross-border visits with only a driver's license; those disappeared after 9/11. There's some leniency when it comes to children coming to Canada. Travelers 15 years of age, or younger, need only present a birth certificate or certified copy to the border patrol.

You Can Bring Fido but Not Fresh Fruit

Be sure to educate yourself on what can and can't be brought over the border to Canada when you visit. For example, you can bring your pet (with proper documentation), but fresh fruit is a no-no. Take advantage of shopping for duty-free liquor and cigarettes at the duty-free stores, but you can only buy  limited amounts .

Canada is a popular hunting destination but be sure to read up on the country's laws regarding prohibited, restricted, and non-restricted guns and be sure you have all the proper paperwork.

You can take gifts into Canada, but anything valued at over $60 CAD is subject to duty and taxes.

Your U.S. Driver's License Is Valid

At first glance, driving in Canada looks the same as it does in the U.S., but dig a little deeper and you'll notice some differences.

The good news is, your U.S. driver's license is perfectly transferable to driving in Canada. However, you'll need to learn some of the other laws and conditions.

Speed limits are different in Canada and posted in metric, so kilometers, not miles, are used to indicate maximum speeds in any given area. Distracted driving laws are in effect in all Canadian provinces and territories , which means cell phones must be used hands-free when driving. Canada also makes it a no-no to smoke in a car if you have a minor (under 16 years old).​

Driving conditions in winter can be extremely hazardous. Have a charged cell phone and an emergency kit when you head out in snowy weather. If your car is not ready for winter driving, consider renting a car that is better equipped. 

U.S. Currency Is Not Accepted Everywhere

Though many border towns and large metropolitan areas will accept U.S. currency , it is not widely accepted in other parts of Canada, like smaller or more remote towns, where they only deal in Canadian currency. Tourist attractions and major malls will probably give you a reasonable exchange rate, while other businesses may just accept U.S. currency at par.

You Could Get Dinged With Cellphone Roaming Charges

Your U.S. cellphone will work in Canada, but the charges will be astronomical if you don't let your carrier know you are heading out of the country and have them work out a texting and calling package for you while you're away. If you don't set up a special plan, turn off your cellular data in settings and only download email when you're hooked up to WiFi.

You Could Be Denied Entry

Canadians love their neighbors to the south and are a friendly lot, but they don't let just anyone across the border. Canadian Border Services Agency guards can get sticky when it comes to criminal records or suspicious behavior. You should be aware of what can get you denied entry ; that includes DUIs and improper identification or papers if you're traveling with minors who are not your own.

You'll Still Need Health Insurance

Canada does have an excellent universal health care system, but only for Canadians. If you are visiting Canada, you might want to purchase travel health insurance coverage for your stay, unless your health insurance provider covers you outside the U.S.

Legal Drinking Age Is 18 or 19

You may have to wait until 21 years old in the U.S.A., but make your way north and the legal drinking age goes down to 18 or 19-years-old in Canada , depending on the province. The drinking age also applies to the ability to buy liquor and beer, which in most parts of Canada is at specially designated liquor and beer stores, not in grocery or convenience stores. 

The Taxes Might Surprise You

Your restaurant or hotel bill might surprise you if you don't know that Canada adds a federal sales tax on all goods and services. Most other provinces also have their own tax, which means, depending on where you are in Canada, your bill could have up to an additional 15 percent tacked on. The tax refund program for visitors to Canada was dropped in 2007 , so the taxes you pay while you're in Canada stay in Canada.

If you want to explore outside of Toronto – and/or you’re short one time – a day trip around southwestern Ontario is a great idea. This area of the province is packed with day trip ideas that have something to offer you in every season (except beaches in winter, obviously).

Eric would know – he grew up north of Toronto (near Barrie) and spent lots of time driving around Ontario for work once upon a time. Recently, and with Lisa, we’ve played tourist quite a bit. Now that we call the “Greater Golden Horseshoe” home once again, it’s an area we know quite well!

While it’s true that many Toronto day trips are best done with a car , Ontario transit is improving so we’ll tell you about all the ways to get somewhere whether that be by car, bus, train, or tour!

Did you know one of the top natural attractions in the world is a day trip from Toronto? Honestly, you probably did – but it’s good to mention it again anyway!

Niagara Falls is one of the best places to visit in Ontario and a popular sightseeing attraction in all of Canada – and for good reason!

Just so we are clear: Niagara Falls, Ontario is a city in Canada while Niagara Falls, New York is the city in the United States just across the river from it – and “Niagara Falls” is also the name of the three waterfalls that people come to see. This includes:

• Horseshoe Falls also known as the “Canadian Falls” is the biggest one people think of first
• American Falls is the name of a smaller waterfall on the American side (also beautiful)
• Bridal Veil Falls is the smallest one right beside the American Falls!

In any case, a visit to the Niagara Falls region is a great idea. There are lots of great attractions that have to do with the Falls themselves like: the famous Hornblower Boat Cruise , Journey Behind the Falls , Skylon Observation Tower , and much more.

There are even fireworks each evening in the summer, and the Falls are lit up every night all year round for you to enjoy. In winter, the Festival of Lights means Friday and Saturday Fireworks from November to early January!

The downtown core of the city – located around Clifton Hill – is loaded with restaurants, casinos, museums, games, and attractions for the whole family like the Niagara Skywheel, Dinosaur Adventure Golf, and many, many more.

North of the main falls area along the Niagara River, there are other natural attractions like the Niagara Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours , the White Water Walk , the Whirlpool Aero Car , The Botanical Gardens + Butterfly Conservatory , and more.

In short, you’d have plenty to do and see in Niagara Falls to fill up a day trip. Because Niagara Falls is so popular (especially in the summertime), it would be a good idea to book tickets for top activities ahead of time to make it easier for yourself.

Toronto to Niagara Falls By Car

Niagara Falls isn’t that far from Toronto – it’s just around the end of Lake Ontario to the southeast. That said, the driving distance is around 130 kilometres and might take as little as 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The most direct/popular route is to hop on the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW)/403 towards Hamilton but you could also take a more scenic route on Highway 81 through areas like Beamsville.

Once you get closer to the Falls on the QEW, follow signs and exit onto ON-420/ Niagara Veterans Memorial Highway East. You can then find parking near the Falls for a high price (but convenient) or find a cheaper lot (but have to walk a bit).

HOWEVER, if you are driving you have to account for traffic in and out of Toronto and through Hamilton. During morning and afternoon commuter times, you might expect to add on 30 minutes to an extra 2 hours of driving time.

Toronto to Niagara Falls By Train

If you want to take the train, you have two options which can be limited depending on the time of year: the GO Train and the ViaRail. Both trains leave from Toronto Union Station in downtown Toronto.

As of early 2024, the GO Train from Toronto to Niagara Falls Station now makes daily trips (not just weekend or seasonal). This new Toronto to Niagara Falls GO train schedule makes the GO train much more doable and convenient as a viable option for a day trip.

The ViaRail train also leaves from Toronto Union Station but only runs once per day in the morning taking about 2 hours to get to Niagara Falls. There is also one return ViaRail train each day. You can  check the ViaRail website  for schedules and details.

Both trains arrive at the same station in Niagara Falls located north of the main Falls area. You can hop on the WEGO bus (now operates year-round), call a cab, or just walk – it’s a nice walk along the river (about 25 minutes) to the Falls!

Toronto to Niagara Falls By Bus

For buses direct to Niagara Falls from Toronto, you have two options: Megabus or FlixBus.

The Megabus and the FlixBus now leave from the new Union Station Bus Terminal located right downtown beside Union Station (the central train station). It’s at the corner of Bay St & Lakeshore Blvd. on the 2nd floor.

Megabus and Flixbus have numerous daily departures for trips that take about 2 hours and good fares (approximately 20 CAD one way). You can check here on the  Megabus website and here for the FlixBus website for their schedules to Niagara Falls.

Once you arrive in Niagara Falls, buses get into the bus station in Niagara Falls which is right across from the train station.

Toronto to Niagara Falls Tour

Another way to get to Niagara Falls that is easy and takes the stress out of the logistics and traffic is by hopping on a shuttle or tour.

Tours are also a good cost-effective way to see the Falls without having added expenses like daily parking. Luckily for you, Niagara Falls is very popular so there are many that you can choose from!

Before you book a tour, definitely look into the itinerary – some tours are just for Niagara Falls while others give you free time/wine tastings in Niagara on the Lake (mentioned below).

In any case, tours are a good way to sit back and relax while a guide takes you to the best experiences and sights!

Niagara-on-the-Lake

If you want to explore Ontario’s premier wine region, you have to check out Niagara on the Lake.

Yes, you COULD visit Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) when you visit Niagara Falls – but you could just as easily make either of them their own day trip since there is enough to explore.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is both a region and also a lovely little town in the region. Think of it as the capital of the area. This historic town is full of charm – shops, restaurants, historic sites, waterfront parks, and more.

That said, the region is well-known in Canada for its wine. NOTL is a fertile area with a unique climate that is shaped by the Niagara Escarpment. As such, there are well over 90 wineries in the Niagara Region – many of which are in Niagara on the Lake.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is also one of the few places in the world that can produce Ice Wine – a sweet wine that is harvested from frozen grapes!

In any case, we would recommend a day in NOTL – the region has loads to check out on its own and it’s beautiful.

We did a wine tour of the region from Niagara Falls but you can sign up for a tour once you get to town. You can also do a self-guided tour which is easy when you have a winery map!

Toronto to Niagara-on-the-Lake By Car

The best (and only) way to get to Niagara-on-the-Lake (the town) -and to get around the whole region once there – is with a car.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is located about 20/25 minutes north of Niagara Falls so you drive there the same way – on the QEW/403 highway towards Hamilton.

Once you get close, you can get off in St. Catharines or in Glendale and follow signs into the region (usually via Highway 55 which runs through the whole region) directly to the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The drive will take about 1 hour and 30 minutes in total. You’ll find paid parking downtown NOTL – and free (sneaky) parking near the Fort if you don’t mind a bit of a walk!

Toronto to Niagara-on-the-Lake By Train

There is no direct train from Toronto to Niagara-on-the-Lake (the town). You can get to “Niagara College” which is a campus IN Niagara-on-the-Lake if you train to St. Catharines but NOT close to the main old town.

Toronto to Niagara-on-the-Lake By Bus

You also can’t get to the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake by bus right from Toronto. You’d have to take a Megabus to St. Catharines and then take regional buses into the region (not super easy for a day trip).

The other option is to get to the Niagara Falls bus station (mentioned above in Niagara Falls) and then take the WEGO NOTL route (only in the summer) or take a taxi (about 25 minutes) from the bus station to NOTL.

Toronto to Niagara-on-the-Lake Tour

Since a car is the only way to get there for a single-day trip, you could also look into a tour to get there and back without hassle.

A tour is also nice because then you have a designated driver!

Toronto Islands

If you want to get out of the city for a day – but don’t want to go too far at all, you can head across the lake to Toronto Islands!

“The Island” is made up of 15 large and small islands that are connected by bridges or walkways. It’s the largest car-free neighbourhood in any city in North America! The Islands are a popular escape in most seasons – you can even visit in the winter.

There are many attractions (like Centreville Amusement Park ), beaches (there’s even one clothing option), smaller parks, and green spaces for picnics, biking paths, the opportunity for boat rentals, and more! There are also a handful of cafes, bars, and restaurants around the island.

We visited the Islands this past summer and loved it. We took the ferry from downtown (more on that right below).

Once there, we went to the beach, walked almost the whole length, got a bite to eat, and came home after a long day just enjoying the slower pace compared to being in the big city!

Believe it or not – people do live on the island. Since there are no cars, a bike is a very popular way to get around. You’ll find bike rentals everywhere.

Toronto to Toronto Islands By Car

It’s a car-free set of islands. You can’t drive there nor can you drive on the Islands, silly.

Toronto to Toronto Islands By Ferry/Water Taxi

To get to the Island, you have to go by boat but you have two options: The official ferry or a private water taxi. We bought a ticket for the ferry.

Three ferry routes leave from the same spot (Jack Layton Ferry Terminal) in downtown Toronto – but the ferries run to three separate locations on the Island: Centre Island, Hanlan’s Island, and Ward’s Island.

The ferry only takes like 13 minutes to cross but loading and unloading can take a few extra (especially in summer).

The nice thing is that when you buy a ticket, it includes the price for a return ticket. So you show a ticket to get on the ferry but to come home from the Island you just get on any ferry you like.

For example, we took the first ferry to Centre Island and came home from Ward’s Island Ferry Dock. No problem. You can buy a Ferry Ticket online (which we recommend because the lineup to buy in-person was massive in the summer).

The other option to get to the island is to hop on a private water taxi. Because they are smaller to load and faster to cross, they are a bit more expensive than the regular ferry ticket – but generally worth it if you don’t like long lines.

Location for Mill Street W Intersection

If it’s a small-town vibe you’re after, then heading for Elora, Ontario is the day trip for you. Located to the northwest of Toronto (kind of between Guelph, Arthur, and Kitchener), this picturesque spot is consistently considered one of Ontario’s prettiest small towns.

We visited on an extended weekend in the fall (October) and the colours were amazing. Of course, there is so much to see and do in any season – we wrote a massive guide on visiting Elora !

Elora is known for a few things: the mighty Grand River running through it and creating an impressive gorge, the historic old architecture, local shops and restaurants, and loads of walking trails in the area.

Right on the water, the impressive Elora Mill Hotel and Spa sits in an old mill building – we stayed there and it was beautiful. Nearby, Victoria Park offers views of the Elora Gorge, the waterfall, and the iconic “Tooth of Time” rock formation in the river.

As for the town, we loved our dinner and drink stop at Elora Brewing Company and took to the walking trails along the river and beyond (we did a big loop towards Fergus and back).

In the summer, you can go river tubing at Elora Gorge Conservation Area (very popular) and swim at the Elora Quarry (very busy).

Toronto to Elora By Car

Driving from Toronto to Elora takes about 2 hours (plus or minus 15 with or without traffic) depending on where you leave from.

The best way is the 401 Westbound towards Guelph, then take the exit for Highway 6 (towards/through Guelph).

If you stay on Highway 6 after Guelph, you’ll end up in the nearby town of Fergus, so you’ll need to adjust your course slightly. Fergus is only 5-10 minutes up the river driving from Elora. The signs are pretty clear once you’re in the region.

Toronto to Elora by Transit/Shuttle

The only option to not drive to Elora is to take the ParkBus – a private company that runs day trip shuttles from Toronto to parks, conservation areas, and hiking trails around Ontario.

They run trips to both Elora Gorge Conservation and the Elora Quarry (both in the warmer months) which you can check out on the ParkBus destinations page .

Hamilton Area Waterfalls

It’s been said that Hamilton, Ontario is the waterfall capital of the world – and we would believe it!

The region just west of Toronto on Lake Ontario is home to well over 100 naturally occurring waterfalls. The number of waterfalls is thanks to the Niagara Escarpment that runs through southwestern Ontario (and beyond).

You can visit Hamilton – the city – but we’d suggest checking out the conservation areas, parks, trails, and waterfalls in the region all around the Hamilton area as well.

We spent a day physically driving around the area chasing waterfalls and going for hikes in conservation areas – and it was awesome!

If you don’t want to read our whole post on waterfalls – linked right above – here are the quick notes to get you started. We explored a few popular waterfalls and a few smaller ones to get a variety.

This included Albion Falls, Buttermilk Falls, Devil’s Punchbowl out in Stoney Creek, and the classic Tiffany Falls.

We didn’t get to explore the amazing view from Dundas Peak with Webster Falls nearby. You can also explore Eramosa Karst Conservation Area (with caves) close to Albion.

If you need a great view and hike, Albion Falls is a great option with parking to go on a short hike (about 15 minutes) to Buttermilk Falls. It’s easy terrain – just watch the path in places because it’s a steep drop!

We also really liked Felker’s Falls in Felker’s Falls Conservation Area. You park in a small residential neighbourhood and walk into the small park to get a set of falls all to yourself.

The trails were nice, too – very dense bush even though the car was just a few hundred metres away!

Toronto to Hamilton Waterfalls By Car

Since this day trip is to “explore the waterfalls around Hamilton” it is a must that you have a car.

We spent a whole day driving around the countryside from fall to fall and had a great time – and we only saw a fraction of the waterfalls/conservation areas.

That said, you can get to Hamilton the same way you go to Niagara Falls – on the QEW/403 towards Hamilton. The drive from Toronto to downtown takes about an hour to 1 hour 30 minutes (or a little more) with traffic.

Once you arrive, you might want to know which waterfalls you want to head for and have a bit of a plan.

For example, Dundas, Downtown Hamilton, and Stoney Creek are three very different areas so you shouldn’t just “go for it” or else you’ll waste time crisscrossing your path! The good news: most of the park areas have parking lots (some free, some paid).

Toronto to Hamilton By Train/Bus

You certainly can get to Hamilton by GO Bus from Toronto Union Station Bus Terminal. The ride takes about 50 minutes to get to downtown Hamilton. You can find more information on prices and routes with GO Transit here .

That said, once you get to Hamilton – for a day trip – it would be hard to then get to enough waterfalls using other public transit to make the trip possible. This is a day trip that just requires a car to complete in a worthwhile way.

Address for Cheltenham Badlands: 1739 Olde Base Line Road, Caledon, ON L7C  0K6

Caledon is one of those things on this list that you’ll have to read more into because we cover a lot when we say “visit Caledon”.

Caledon is a rural town that is located northwest of Toronto – and it is divided into several small little villages and areas.

There’s a tiny “downtown” in Caledon Village which you can check out, but the reason to head for the area is for the hikes and the nature.

Caledon is home to some top conservation areas (in the Credit Valley) with waterfalls, walking trails, fishing, and geological attractions unlike anywhere in Ontario. There are MANY but we will focus on three:

One of the most popular parks to check out is Belfountain Conservation Area . It’s popular for day-trippers because there’s a lovely bridge that overlooks a dam/waterfall.

We went for a hike there and it was beautiful. There is even a picnic place for families. If you head for Belfountain, be sure to stop for a coffee and treat at Higher Ground Café !

Another very popular feature of the Caledon area is Forks of the Credit Provincial Park . This small Provincial Park is day-use only and packed with hiking trails, bridges, and a waterfall.

The Bruce Trail and Trans Canada Trail – as well as the Park’s trails- all run through this varied, rolling landscape. We had a great visit and even made our Forks of the Credit guide with a sample hiking itinerary (with detailed photos)!

The last feature of the area that you can check out is the Cheltenham Badlands . As the name suggests, this rock formation resembles the red, rocky Badlands of Utah or Alberta.

The eroding earth is very cool to see up close (but you can’t walk on it, which is good because that protects it from human activity).

They redid the visitor area so that you can now read all about the history, hit the hiking trails, and have a place to park that you must pay for and off the main road. Our advice is to go early since the lot is small!

Toronto to Caledon By Car

Spoiler: This Caledon “explorer’s day trip” is best/only done with a car. Caledon isn’t too far from Toronto – but where you are starting will greatly dictate your route. Generally speaking, Caledon is to the northwest of Toronto past Brampton.

Once you get out of Toronto in the west end, you can take any of Highway 10, Dixie Road, or Airport Road northwest into the area. The driving distance is about 60 km and will take 45 minutes or longer (like an hour) with traffic.

Toronto to Caledon By Bus

Honestly, it would be hard to maximize your time in the area if you travelled by bus to Caledon. That said, you could get to Brampton GO Station via bus or train from Union and then take bus 37 towards Orangeville and get off in Caledon Village.

You’d have a hard time from there, though. Maybe pay for a taxi to take you around?

Collingwood + Blue Mountain

Summer or winter, it doesn’t matter – it’s always a good idea to head up to Collingwood and the Blue Mountains on a day trip!

The town of Collingwood – located on the shores of southern Georgian Bay – is small with a nice walkable downtown area full of shops and places to eat. The nearby Millennium Overlook Park or the Collingwood Museum are other places to visit!

We loved Duncan’s Cafe for brunch/lunch – but there are many more places to try!

You have to drive through Collingwood to get to the actual “Blue Mountains” which are a raised geological area. There, you’ll find Blue Mountain Resort – arguably the best summer/winter resort in the province.

From top slopes in the winter to dozens of activities in the summer, it’s a popular spot to check out. We went for a visit to The Village last summer (Lisa’s first time) and it was an absolute hub of activity.

Another place you can check out if you’re heading to this area of the province is the Scandinave Spa at Blue Mountain . This VERY popular spa experience is the perfect way to unwind (especially in the winter) with outdoor baths, waterfalls, massages, fire pits, and more.

Toronto to Collingwood By Car

By far the easiest way to get to Collingwood is by car. Collingwood is located to the north of Toronto on the south shore of Georgian Bay (getting into Ontario cottage country) about 2 hours and 20 minutes driving (about 160 km driving distance).

The best route is very similar to how you drive to Caledon – through Brampton, Orangeville (Highway 10), and then just follow County Road 124 the rest of the way.

The other route is up Highway 400 (past Barrie) but then heads west on Horseshoe Valley Road until it becomes Highway 26.

Highway 26 will take you right through Stayner, downtown Collingwood, and Blue Mountain. This route also takes longer because traffic is usually awful on the 400.

Once you arrive in Collingwood, there’s plenty of street parking. If you are heading for Blue Mountain, you will find that they have large parking lots, too.

Toronto to Collingwood By Bus/Shuttle

You can get to Collingwood in the winter season by private tour/shuttle services that run from Toronto to Collingwood. Check out AU Coach Tours with downtown Toronto pick-ups to Blue Mountain.

Wasaga Beach

Address for Nancy Island: 119 Mosley St, Wasaga Beach, ON L9Z 2X1, Canada

Speaking of southern Georgian Bay, how about a day at the beach? How about a day at the longest freshwater beach in the world?! Well, that’s Wasaga Beach for you.

Located in the town of Wasaga Beach north of the city (just east of Collingwood), the stretch of shoreline offers visitors 14 kilometres of sandy beach and summer and winter fun.

Officially Wasaga Beach Provincial Park , the beach is Blue Flag certified (that means it’s really good/safe for world standards) and also includes walking and cross-country ski trails in the winter!

Along the waterfront (in the summer), there are a TON (seriously, very many) restaurants, bars, stores, and shops – you name it, it’s there! The area also has a bit of natural and war history to check out at Nancy Island Historic Site.

Toronto to Wasaga Beach By Car

Once again, for a day trip, the best/only option to get to Wasaga Beach is by car. The town and beach are located about a 2-hour drive north of Toronto with a driving distance of about 150 kilometres.

The route is the same way you would head to Collingwood but instead head slightly east instead of west when you reach Georgian Bay.

You can also go up Highway 400, get off in Barrie, and snake along smaller highways and county roads to get there.

Once you get there, you’ll find ample parking. Some lots and spots are 5 dollars close to the beach. You can also park inside the official park – but it’s 3 or 4 times that price.

Prince Edward County

This is probably one of the farthest day trips we have on the list, but a day trip to Prince Edward County is worth it!

This “island-like” region (it’s technically a peninsula) extends into Lake Ontario. It’s a great region with unique geography from sandy dunes to fertile land for wine grapes!

As such, PEC – also often called “The County” – is known as another of Ontario’s wine regions! We really like PEC and we’ve spent quite a bit of time exploring the whole region.

That said, there are lots of things to see and do in Prince Edward County . The main towns – Picton and Wellington – offer you shops, cafes (like Beacon Bike and Brew ), restaurants, and more.

You can head for the beach or hike the massive dunes when exploring Sandbanks Provincial Park . It’s a great place in Ontario if you want to try day camping !

However, the region is best known for its wineries. There are close to 40 wineries – bigger operations and smaller family-run ones. Check out Huff Estates or Sandbanks Estate Winery – famous for their Baco Noir.

There are also lots of breweries like Parson’s Brewing Company and Lake on the Mountain Brewing Co . (another of our favourites).

You also can’t forget about The County Cider Company ! We really can’t do the area justice – you have to go and see for yourself. Just remember if you have alcoholic beverages, you shouldn’t be driving (and have a designated driver).

Toronto to Prince Edward County By Car

The best (and only) way to get to and get around the County is by car. There’s just no way around it. The drive from Toronto is pretty easy – just take Highway 401 east, get off in Belleville (or exit #522), and head south into the County.

To head right to Picton, the drive will be about 2 hours and 30 minutes (210 km driving distance) but once you’re there you have the whole region to explore!

Parking will vary but all wineries and breweries have parking plus there’s ample street parking in Picton, Wellington, etc.

Alternatively, if you have a group of people you could look into renting a limo or hiring a taxi for a whole day. If you split the cost, it would make for a more manageable trip – plus then you have a designated driver secured all day!

Toronto to Prince Edward County By Train

You can’t travel to Prince Edward County by train. The best you could do is to get to Belleville on the ViaRail.

Then you’d have to rent a car or get a taxi to get into the County – even then you’d need a direction like Picton or a specific winery.

Barrie + Oro-Medonte

If you want to spend a day at the beach/another lovely little waterfront, then you should head for Barrie! Barrie is a relatively large city located north of Toronto up on the shores of Lake Simcoe at Kempenfelt Bay.

As a day trip, you wouldn’t need to visit most of the city (it sprawls out quite a bit). You would be perfectly fine heading for the small downtown area by the waterfront (Dunlop Street East).

Here, you’ll find a few shops, restaurants, pubs ( Donaleigh’s Irish Public House ), and even a great brewery – Flying Monkeys – with a nice patio.

At the waterfront, there are numerous parks with walking trails that run for kilometres. Heritage Park is close to downtown and if you walk south, you can find the main one – Centennial Park and Centennial Beach.

If you want to get out on the water, you can rent a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard from the small stands along the shoreline. You can even check out the Spirit Catcher sculpture – and there are stalls for ice cream, too!

If you are heading up to Barrie, you might also be interested in heading a bit further north. Just a bit farther up the highway, you’ll find the township of Oro-Medonte and more for a variety of the areas ski hills/recreation areas!

Specifically, check out Hardwood Hills Ski and Bike – mountain biking, hiking, and disc golf in summer and cross-country skiing in winter.

You might also try Snow Valley Resort , Horseshoe Resort , or Mount St. Louis Moonstone for winter skiing/tubing and some summer activities (Horseshoe is open in summer).

Toronto to Barrie By Car

Barrie is located basically due north of Toronto. As such, the easiest way to get from Toronto to Barrie is by car.

The driving distance is about 100 km and it’ll take about one hour and 30 minutes (depending on traffic) on Highway 400 (the major highway you take all the way there).

As you get close to Barrie, get off at Bayfield Street to head for downtown and the waterfront. There is lots of paid parking once you get downtown or to the waterfront.

If you want to head for any of the ski hills north of the city mentioned above, you need a car. Many are accessible past Barrie on Highway 400 or Highway 11 northbound.

Toronto to Barrie By Train

Depending on the time of day, you could take the GO Train to Barrie but they usually only run at night in this direction (to bring commuters home).

So, to go to Barrie in the morning, you’ll need to take the GO Bus OR a combo of train and bus (see more below). The overall trip would take about one hour and 30 minutes. Here’s the  GO Route Planner for this Toronto-Barrie route .

If you do take the train, you will head for Allandale Waterfront GO Station which is right by the waterfront and a short walk to downtown.

Just so you know: Barrie city transit is included in your GO fare if you get off the train and travel within 30 minutes of getting into Barrie. You can learn more  on the city of Barrie website here .

Toronto to Barrie By Bus

There are more options for taking the bus to Barrie. As we mentioned above, you can take the GO Bus or Ontario Northland.

To be honest, the Northland is a direct trip whereas you may have to change via the GO Bus so you pick your battle here. You can check for fares and times on Ontario Northland .

Both the GO Bus and the Ontario Northland now leave from the new Union Station Bus Terminal in Toronto at 81 Bay Street. It’s at the corner of Bay St & Lakeshore Blvd.

Whichever you take, all buses end at the same station near the Barrie Waterfront downtown.

Gravenhurst + The Muskokas

If you want your chance at getting a taste of the famous “cottage country” region in Ontario known as the Muskokas, then head to Gravenhurst! This small town just off Highway 11 has plenty of natural beauty to check out for a day.

Nestled up in the bottom of Lake Muskoka, Gravenhurst has a nice little downtown, some historic sites, and a great Wharf area with a boardwalk to check out.

Of course, you can go much higher up into Ontario – but these wouldn’t be day trips. You might be able to check out nearby Bracebridge, but that’s about as far as you’d wanna go in a single day. There are great Muskoka accommodations (like resorts) nearby you could visit for a day.

Once you’re in town, there are lots of great things to do in Gravenhurst . A classic thing to do is to take a cruise on the vintage Muskoka steamships and check out the Discovery Centre to learn about the area.

You might want to visit Gull Lake Rotary Park or Lookout Park overlooking the water. Just be sure to book in advance if you want to cruise because they can sell out in the summer WELL in advance!

Oh, and if you’re passing through downtown Gravenhurst don’t forget to check out Sawdust City Brewing . This brewery does amazing craft beer and has a great venue for tastings and events – we even wrote about our visit to Sawdust City !

Toronto to Gravenhurst By Car

Unsurprisingly, the best way to get to Gravenhurst and explore it is by car. Gravenhurst is located north of Toronto (past Barrie) up Highway 11.

It’s about 2 hours of driving (170 kilometres driving distance) so if you leave in the morning you can get in a whole day of hiking, eating, and enjoying!

Once you get to Gravenhurst, there’s free parking down at the waterfront Wharf area and street parking along the main street through “downtown”. We had no problem finding parking!

Toronto to Gravenhurst By Bus

The Ontario Northland bus does go from Toronto to Gravenhurst around 3 times a day – but the trip takes 2 hours and 50 minutes.

We’d say it’s a great idea but for a day trip you might want that extra hour back so perhaps driving is best. That said, you can see the prices and schedule for Ontario Northland here .

If you are feeling the green vibes and want another option for the country, then you should head to Guelph! This growing farm town is very agriculturally-conscious, and there’s lots to see and do!

We like Guelph quite a bit. It’s got a nice downtown core with restaurants, bars, and plenty of shops.

As for things to do and see, there’s a famous Farmer’s Market on Saturday, a massive Basilica on the hill, a civic museum, The Bookshelf , and more. You can even skate at City Hall in winter!

If you want to connect with nature, you can rent a canoe/kayak on the rivers (and eat ice cream at “ The Boathouse Tearoom “), walk the numerous walking trails through the parks, check out the Arboretum, or head north of the city to Guelph Lake Conservation Area with a beach!

Oh, and Guelph is known for its breweries – so be sure to visit Brothers Brewing right downtown or Royal City Brewing for a taste of some great craft beer!

Toronto to Guelph By Car

As with most places on this list, it’s easiest/best to get to Guelph by car for a day trip. Guelph is located west (and a bit south) of Toronto. Just take Highway 401 for about 1 hour and 20 minutes (traffic depending).

It’s about 90 kilometres driving distance so not too far – and it’s an easy one. You then take Highway 46 (which is exit #299). This turns into Gordon Street and you’ll drive right downtown Guelph.

Once downtown, there are lots of places to park whether you’re looking for street parking or parking lots. Parking in the Baker Street lot means you can go eat at Baker Street Station Pub which is a quick walk from downtown.

Toronto to Guelph By Train

You actually can get to Guelph by train with ViaRail but it does not work for a day trip there and back.

There are now several train-only (direct, no transfers) trips from Toronto to Guelph one in the morning, then around lunch, then a bunch in the late afternoon (to serve the commuters heading home to Guelph from Toronto).

These train trips take about 1 hour 30 minutes – so a day trip on the GO Train is possible. It’s also cheaper with a Presto Card, FYI.

Also, since weekday and weekend schedules vary slightly, it’s important to check the GO Transit Schedule ahead of time to know how and when you are travelling.

Toronto to Guelph By Bus

As for the bus, you could theoretically take the GO Bus the whole way if you left early in the morning.

Otherwise, you’d have to take the GO train/bus combo later in the morning (you can check the GO Transit Schedule ) to make it worth your time for a day trip.

Grand River + Cambridge

If you want more of a hidden gem day trip from Toronto, you might consider heading to Cambridge, Ontario!

Once known as Galt, this smaller city close to Kitchener is located right on the Grand River – an important feature in Ontario’s landscape and history. The city is made up of smaller towns like Preston, Hespeler, and Galt/West Galt – each with its unique charm.

There are lots of things to do in the Cambridge area such as shop/cafe/pub hop, check out the McDougall Cottage Historic Site, or just simply wander the Grand.

The historic buildings (Central Presbyterian Church, seen above) make for lovely photographs. There are many pathways along parts of the river that cut through tranquil parks and green spaces.

Outside the city centre (this is where a car comes in), there are things like the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory, Shade’s Mills Conservation Area, and Chicopee Resort for winter tubing and summer fun, too!

Eric has played disc golf at Chicopee in the summer and it was an absolute blast!

One of the top activities along the Grand River is river tubing in the summer. There are a few places you can do it but Cambridge is certainly a popular location. Tubing the Grand launches north of the city centre just upriver!

Toronto to Cambridge By Car

No surprise, but it’s best to head to Cambridge in a car. The city is located to the west and a little south of Toronto (south of Guelph). Just take Highway 401 westbound out of the city.

You can then take exit #286 or #282 and head south into Cambridge. 282 takes you RIGHT into downtown along the river.

The total driving distance is about 100 km and 1 hour (of course, traffic-depending). Once you get there, there’s street parking and a handful of lots to park in.

Toronto to Cambridge By Bus

Since Greyhound shut down its routes in Canada in 2021, there is, unfortunately, no bus option between these two cities.

Kawartha Lakes

One more day trip to the other famous Ontario Cottage region doesn’t hurt, right? Then you may want to check out Kawartha Lakes!

Kawartha Lakes is an actual place, the Kawartha Lakes are a grouping of lakes, and the “Kawarthas” is the name that has come to represent this area of unique rocky landscape and lakes!

The region is known to include towns like Bobcaygeon (also the name of a famous song by the Tragically Hip – a Canadian band), Lindsay, and Buckhorn, and features popular lakes like Stoney and Sturgeon.

There are a few parks in the area – such as Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park and Petroglyphs Provincial Park but they are farther to the east.

Heading more south (close to Campbellford) you’ll find the Ranney Gorge Suspension Bridge on the Trent-Severn Waterway. This is a great stop if you want another short walk and amazing photos!

Oh, and don’t forget to eat some Kawartha Dairy ice cream. You can find it all over Ontario but it bears the name of the famous region being founded in Bobcaygeon!

Toronto to Kawartha Lakes By Car

Given the large nature of the area, this day trip is best done by car. Luckily, there are a few ways to get to the area – and it depends on where you are heading in the region.

To drive to Bobcaygeon, for example, you’ll head to the northeast of Toronto for about 2 hours (traffic depending) on Highway 401 to Highway 115 then to Highway 35.

The distance is about 160 kilometres so it’s not too long but it’ll certainly be a bit of a trek. You will want to start in the morning to not waste the day.

Milton Conservation Areas

If you want an area that is jam-packed with outdoor adventure in all seasons, you should head for Milton, Ontario!

If you’re a local, you might be laughing, but hear us out. Milton is home to some top conservation areas with excellent trails for hiking, snowshoeing, and scenic views.

The reason Milton has such a great outdoor scene is because of the Niagara Escarpment. It runs along the edge of town (and includes part of the Bruce Trail) and shapes the landscape.

As such, there are three places in particular that – if you head out to Milton – you should check out: Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area , Kelso Conservation Area , and Crawford Lake Conservation Area .

In the summer season, these places can get pretty busy (because of the stunning views/vantage points from the high cliffs).

So if you plan on being a day-tripper from Toronto, be sure to be safe when you visit and be flexible enough to check out another area. If you go in the winter, bring your skis and/or snowshoes to make the most of the trails!

Toronto to Milton By Car

Exploring the Milton/Halton area is easiest by car – especially if you plan on visiting more than one place while out for the day.

The drive to Milton is pretty easy – you just take Highway 401 west out of Toronto and head for exit #320. All three areas above can be found from this exit.

The drive will take about an hour (for about 70 km driving distance) but since you are going against commuter traffic in the morning and afternoon you might be spared super stuffy traffic in/out of the west end. Good luck!

Toronto to Milton By Train/Bus

Milton has a GO Station in the town centre that is serviced by GO Bus and Train – the issue is much like the day trip to Barrie: if you wanted to go to Milton in the morning, the train would be coming against you to bring commuters to work. That said, you can still have a look at the GO Transit website .

Cobourg Beach + Cobourg

Address for Cobourg Beach: 138 Division St, Cobourg, ON K9A 3P3, Canada

If you haven’t had enough of beaches – and you don’t want to drive to get to one – then you have one more potential option: heading to Cobourg, Ontario!

This small town on Lake Ontario boasts one of the best beaches in the province – and it’s right downtown close to the centre!

Cobourg Beach is a public beach with lots of amenities and green space, food options nearby, a splash pad for kids, and there are even camping grounds.

A highlight is that there are walking trails along the water that extend along the shoreline – so there’s more to do than just visiting the beach.

As for Cobourg itself, the downtown core is small but full of little shops, cafes, places to eat, bars, an art gallery, and more! Oh, and don’t forget to photograph the lighthouse if you go. It’s quite nice down by the Harbour!

Toronto to Cobourg By Car

The best option (as per usual) is to drive to Cobourg. From Toronto, you head east on Highway 401 for about 1 hour and 30 minutes (120 km driving distance).

Take exit #472 and head south to the water. Once you get there, you can find parking on the street or in a paid lot.

Toronto to Cobourg By Train

You actually could take the ViaRail train to the beach (there is no GO service). Cobourg has a ViaRail station not too far from downtown. The trip will take an hour each way.

The good news is you could do it – leave in the morning and return to Union at night. The potential bad news is for the price you could rent a car and pay for a tank of gas for cheaper (season-dependent).

In any case, it’s an option! You can check for times and prices at the ViaRail website .

Buffalo, USA

Address for City Hall: 65 Niagara Square, Buffalo, NY 14202, United States

If you’re looking for day trips to the USA from Toronto, Buffalo, New York is probably your best bet! Buffalo is surprisingly not far from Toronto – making it a popular spot for cross-border shopping.

Once you get downtown, you can check out the Canalside area, the Naval and Military Park, the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site, and more!

Mind you, this is an international border so you will need to bring ID with you to go there and back!

Toronto to Buffalo By Car

Being located across the border and south of Niagara Falls, driving to Buffalo is a good option – but you should get a head start in the morning.

From Toronto, you take our friend the QEW/Highway 403 towards Hamilton and then head for Niagara Falls.

You can then choose: cross into the USA at Niagara Falls and the Rainbow Bridge OR drive south to Fort Erie and cross on the Peace Bridge (closer to actual Buffalo)!

The trip will take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours (about 170 km driving distance). The thing is, you pass through so many areas that MAY slow you down that it’s just hard to nail down an exact time.

Toronto to Buffalo By Bus

Luckily, because it’s a popular city, you can take both the Greyhound, Megabus, or FlixBus to Buffalo. Yes, Greyhound shut down Canadian operations in 2021 but only routes in Canada – they still run cross-border Toronto to Buffalo.

The Megabus, FlixBus, and Greyhound all leave from the new Union Station Bus Terminal located at 81 Bay Street Union Bus Terminal.

As for time, Greyhound can do it in about 3 hours one way (some slightly more, some slightly less). It depends on the day of travel.

You can check schedules and prices with Greyhound , FlixBus , or the Megabus . All buses arrive at the same station.

Dairy Queen, McDonald's and More Restaurants Giving Out Free (or Cheap) Food for National Cheeseburger Day

National Cheeseburger Day is on Wednesday, Sept. 18 but some fast food restaurants have already kicked off the deals

Burger fanatics have plenty of discounted options for National Cheeseburger Day .

The food holiday falls on Wednesday, Sept. 18, and fast food restaurants and fast casual chains are celebrating with free or cheap burgers. Dairy Queen has free double cheeseburgers with a $1 order and McDonald's has the same for 50 cents. Read on for all the delicious deals.

Applebees: Guests can pay $9 to score one of three burgers and a side of fries. The burger options include the classic bacon cheeseburger, classic cheeseburger and classic burger.

Buffalo Wild Wings: The wing spot isn’t chicken about tapping into the national food holiday with a buy-one-get-one-free burger deal. The offer is applicable to reward members and applies to menu items like the bacon mac and cheese burger, all-American cheeseburger and more.

Burger King: The home of the Whopper announced several days of deals . With a purchase of $1 or more, fans can get a free chicken sandwich on Sept. 17, free cheeseburger on Sept. 18, four-piece mozzarella fries on Sept. 19, free croissant breakfast sandwich on Sept. 20, free chicken fries on Sept. 21 and free soft drink on Sept. 22.

Dairy Queen: DQ is offering a free original cheeseburger signature stackburger with an app or online order of $1 or more from Sept. 16 to Sept. 22. The beef patties topped with sharp American cheese, pickles, ketchup and mustard, are only available at DQ Grill & Chill locations.

Denny’s: Rewards members can score 20% off any burger, including any of the restaurant’s limited-time choices like the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice -inspired option , the Beetlejuicy Burger.

McDonald’s: Big Macs might not be on sale, but McDonald’s is still treating fans to a discounted favorite . On Wednesday, Sept. 18, guests can get a 50-cent double cheeseburger when ordering on the McDonald's app.

Red Robin: The deals are kicking off early at the fast food restaurant, as guests can get a gourmet cheeseburger with a bottomless side for $10 compared to the usual $15 or more price tag from Sept. 17 through Sept. 19.

Sonic: The drive-in joint is handing out their quarter-pounder double cheeseburger for $2 on Wednesday. Plus, on Sept. 17 — the day before National Cheeseburger Day — guests can get half-priced cheeseburgers after 5 p.m. as part of their weekly Tuesday deal.

Wendy’s : Stop by the chain restaurant for five days of cheeseburger deals . From Sept. 18 through Sept. 22, customers can snag a 1-cent Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger with any purchase. The digital offer will be available to people placing orders on the Wendy’s app.

White Castle: Burger lovers can get buy-one-get-one-free cheese sliders on the White Castle app. All users have to do is plug in the code “SAYCHEESE” to snag the deal on Sept. 18.

Trinity Rodman scores as US women’s soccer team beats Japan 1-0 after extra time to reach Olympic semifinal

Trinity Rodman scored in extra time and the United States advanced to the women’s soccer semifinals at the Olympics with a 1-0 victory over Japan on Saturday.

The United States will face the winner of the later match between Germany and Canada in Marseille. The U.S. beat Germany 4-1 in the group stage.

The U.S. went into the knockout match undefeated and outscoring opponents 9-2 at the  Paris Games  under new coach Emma Hayes but Japan foiled the Americans with steady defense.

Rodman’s goal to the top of the far post came as time in stoppage time in the first extra period. She fell to the field as she was embraced by her teammates in celebration.

It was Rodman’s third goal of the tournament. She nearly scored again in the second extra period.
