RUBY WAX ‘I’M NOT AS WELL AS I THOUGHT I WAS’ ANNOUNCES NEW LIVE TOUR DATES AFTER SOLD-OUT TOUR

Press Release

‘Deeply thoughtful and resolutely frothy’ The Times ‘A fascinating hour in the company of a survivor’ The Telegraph

After a sold-out run in 2023 and enormous demand, Ruby Wax brings her most raw and funny stage show yet, ‘I’m Not as Well As I Thought I Was’ , to Bournemouth Pavilion on Wednesday 5 June 2024!

Laced with humour and based on her bestselling book of the same name, in the I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was stage show Ruby reflects back on a series of life-changing journeys she undertook in search of meaning – swimming with humpback whales; embarking on a 30-day silent retreat in California; joining a Christian monastery – that ended up taking her in a very different direction. After ten years, Ruby’s depression resurfaced, and at the start of 2022 she was admitted to a mental health clinic.

“The original idea behind this show was based on the extreme journeys that I wanted to take in order to find an antidote to living a frazzled life. Along the way I wanted to find meaning, peace, happiness – the stuff we’re all chasing. However, after some transcendent experiences, I ended up in a mental institution. Obviously, I didn’t find what I was looking for.”

Directed by Alison Summers, the show sees Ruby subvert our stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding mental health and happiness in her most honest, compelling and vulnerable performance yet.

Ruby Wax is a successful comedian, TV writer and performer of over 25 years. Ruby additionally holds a Masters’ degree in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy from Oxford University and was awarded an OBE in 2015 for her services to mental health. To date, Ruby has sold over one million copies of her books worldwide. She is the author of books Sane New World and A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled and has toured all over the world with the accompanying one-woman shows. Both books have reached the number one spot on the Sunday Times bestsellers list, along with a third book, How to Be Human: The Manual. In March 2017 she launched Frazzled café in partnership with Marks & Spencer and held daily sessions online at Frazzled.org during the coronavirus lockdown.

Ruby Wax returns to the stage with I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was

Friday 3rd March 2023, 11:16am

Ruby Wax

  • Ruby Wax: I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was will tour September and November 2023
  • In the show, Wax will talk about how she ended up in a mental institution after having undertaken some mindfulness journeys
  • It will see "Ruby pushing boundaries, and making her mark as one of the most important voices in mental health today"

Ruby Wax is to tour the UK with her show I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was between September and November 2023 .

Her promoters say: "After 4 years, Ruby Wax returns to stage, following her critically acclaimed, sell out tour, How To Be Human . A stage adaptation of her upcoming book, set for release 11th May 2023 . Renowned for her comedy, her fearless approach to tackling mental well-being, and her ability to make audiences laugh and cry in equal measure. I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was , is set to be Ruby's rawest, darkest, funniest and most compelling stage show yet.

"In 2022 , Ruby Wax went on a search to find meaning. She booked a series of potentially life-changing journeys. In the Dominican Republic, she went swimming with humpback whales; she joined a Christian monastery; in Greece, she worked in a refugee camp; in California, she did a silent 30-day mindfulness retreat. The search to find meaning was about to take her in a different direction, no longer journeying in the outside world but within her own mind, and this inner journey would turn out to be the most life-changing journey of all."

She elaborates: "The original idea behind this show was based on the extreme journeys that I wanted to take in order to find an antidote to living a frazzled life. Along the way I wanted to find meaning, peace, happiness - the stuff we're all chasing. However, after some transcendent experiences, I ended up in a mental institution. Obviously, I didn't find what I was looking for."

The promoters conclude: "Directed by writer and an Olivier Award-winning director Clare Lizzimore , I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was , will see Ruby pushing boundaries, and making her mark as one of the most important voices in mental health today."

Ruby Wax: I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was

Description.

An unmissable opportunity to see Ruby Wax’s rawest, darkest, funniest and most compelling stage show yet. Following a complete sell-out of the tour in 2023, she’s back due to popular demand.

The show explores Ruby’s personal quest for an antidote to a frazzled life, seeking meaning and happiness. “I wanted to find meaning, peace, happiness – the stuff we’re all chasing. However, after some transcendent experiences, I ended up in a mental institution…Obviously, I didn’t find what I was looking for.”

Wax has been open about her struggles with bipolar disorder and depression. Reflecting on years of personal and professional experience, she will discuss her struggles with mental health and different treatments over the years, hoping to provide reassurance and guidance to anyone confronting their own anticipated, or unanticipated, struggles with mental health.
