8 Things To Know Before Going To Hong Kong
Hong Kong is a captivating blend of East and West, where towering skyscrapers meet ancient temples, and bustling markets coexist with serene parks. Known for its stunning skyline, rich cultural heritage, and culinary delights , Hong Kong offers an unforgettable experience for every traveller. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned explorer, there are a few key things to remember to make the most of your trip. From understanding visa requirements and navigating the efficient public transportation system to respecting local customs and knowing the best times to visit, here are seven essential things you should know before embarking on your Hong Kong adventure.
Getting Around Hong Kong
Hong Kong offers a variety of transportation options, including taxis, ferries, trains, buses, and trams. The city's public transport system is highly efficient and provides convenient payment methods such as cash, Octopus Card, and e-Wallet. Additionally, travellers can use the HKeMobility app developed by Hong Kong's Transport Department to plan their journeys. This app offers information on transport routes, fares, journey times, arrival times, and real-time traffic conditions for MTR, buses, mini-buses, trams, ferries, and water taxis, making it easy to navigate the city using public transport.
Avoid The Crowds
In Hong Kong, a global financial hub, rush hours can be bustling and crowded. The morning rush begins at 7:30 a.m. and lasts until 9:30 a.m., while the evening rush extends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., occurring every weekday. The streets are filled with people heading to and from work during these times, creating a vibrant but bustling atmosphere. Moreover, workers observe lunch hours between 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. to take a break and rejuvenate before resuming work. To navigate the city efficiently, plan your travel outside these peak hours to avoid bustling crowds.
Mind Your Manners
Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. The Hong Kong Tourism Board lays down several rules to follow. For instance, loud conversations, music, or videos in public areas are considered inconsiderate to others. When taking public transport, it is customary to let passengers off before you enter. To keep up with the fast pace, locals always prepare their ticket or Octopus card before they get to the barrier. Hong Kong is known for orderliness, embodied in locals’ respect for the queue. Not just for public transport, Hong Kong people queue up for ticketing counters, bathrooms, restaurants, the latest products, store openings, giveaways, and more. If others are on the same mission as you – join the queue. For your safety, please follow the traffic lights when crossing the road. Violating the traffic rules will result in a hefty fine.
Watch The Weather
Hong Kong is a fantastic destination to explore year-round, but remember that summer (June to August) can get quite hot and humid. While you may be inclined to pack mainly swimwear and sarongs, according to the Hong Kong Tourism Board, it's essential to be prepared for the chilly air-conditioning in Hong Kong's shopping malls, cinemas, and public transport. Remember to include some warm clothing in your suitcase. Stay updated on the weather as typhoon season lasts from May to November. Warnings for approaching typhoons are communicated through television and radio. On average, Hong Kong experiences about six mild typhoons a year, and if you visit during spring or summer, you might encounter one of them or even a thunderstorm.
Tech Things
Make sure to bring the necessary electrical adapters and be aware of the voltage differences. In Hong Kong, you'll need the UK-style three-pronged plug, and the standard voltage is 220 volts AC at a frequency of 50Hz. While free public WiFi is available for tourists, it comes with security risks. To stay safe and connected, we recommend purchasing an eSIM before your trip or downloading the Travel Hong Kong WiFi app to enjoy secure, reliable, and stable online access at various locations, including coffee shops, restaurants, payphone kiosks, convenience stores, malls, MTR stations, Airport Express stations, and trains.
In Hong Kong, most businesses accept credit cards, including American Express, Visa, and Mastercard. You can also use mobile payment platforms like Apple Pay, Google Pay, Alipay, and WeChat Pay. However, it's a good idea to carry some cash since certain markets and street food vendors may only accept cash or Octopus cards. It's best to exchange currency in advance or get an Octopus card for public transportation and purchases at stores and eateries.
Check Out The Deals
If you are here to shop, you should check out the abundance of deals throughout Hong Kong. They cater to all preferences—from luxurious hotel offers to budget-friendly stays, as well as discounts for top attractions and delightful dining experiences.
Visa Requirement For Indians
Indian nationals can enjoy a visa-free 14-day visit to Hong Kong upon successful completion of the Pre-arrival Registration (PAR) online. You can conveniently fill out the online application form at gov.hk/en/apps/immdindianparreg.html . Upon registration, get a printout of the Notification Slip for Pre-Arrival Registration, which must be presented alongside your passport when travelling to Hong Kong or during immigration clearance upon arrival. Typically, the Pre-Arrival Registration is valid for a period of six months or until the linked Indian passport expires, depending on which comes earlier.

Passengers on high alert as aircraft becomes hotspot for airborne luxury watch heists
31st August 2024 – (Hong Kong) Recent incidents involving the theft of high-value watches on flights to Hong Kong have sent shockwaves through the aviation industry and raised alarming questions about the safety of passengers’ belongings in the cramped confines of an aircraft cabin.
On 25th August 2024, passengers aboard a Hong Kong Express flight from Danang, Vietnam were left stranded on the tarmac for over an hour after a theft incident on board the aircraft. The UO561 flight, which was scheduled to arrive in Hong Kong at 12.25pm actually landed approximately 30 minutes earlier. After disembarking, the passengers boarded a transfer bus, but the vehicle remained stationary with its doors locked, delaying their transit to the immigration hall. Around an hour later, cabin crew and police personnel entered the bus, identified and escorted several male passengers back to the aircraft for investigation. The authorities stated that a 39-year-old male passenger named Yip had reported the theft of a HK$330,000 luxury watch, along with some cash and credit cards. Police subsequently recovered the stolen items in the luggage of a 57-year-old mainland Chinese man, who was then arrested on suspicion of theft.
In a separate incident that occurred on 26th August 2024, a passenger on a Vietjet Air flight from Da Nang, Vietnam to Hong Kong was robbed of his credit card, which was then used for nearly HK$40,000 in unauthorised transactions. The 37-year-old male passenger, surnamed Ko, had placed his credit card in his backpack, which he had stored in the overhead luggage compartment. He fell asleep during the flight, and upon arrival in Hong Kong, received text messages from his bank alerting him to the fraudulent charges.
The most recent case, involving a Chinese national who reported the loss of a Patek Philippe watch valued at an eye-watering HK$4.16 million upon arrival at Hong Kong International Airport on a Swissair flight, has thrust the issue of in-flight theft into the spotlight.
The stolen credit card, coupled with the theft of the two watches has left travellers and industry experts alike wondering: Are we witnessing a rise in sophisticated airborne larceny?
While it’s tempting to view these incidents as isolated occurrences, the reality may be far more concerning. Hong Kong police reported 74 cases of in-flight theft in the first seven months of 2024 alone, a figure that represents 82% of the total cases for the entirety of 2023. This marked increase suggests that the problem is not only persistent but potentially growing in scope and audacity. What we’re seeing is likely the tip of the iceberg. Many thefts go unreported, either because victims don’t realise they’ve been robbed until much later, or because they’re embarrassed to admit they’ve been targeted. The actual number of incidents could be significantly higher.
The modus operandi of these airborne thieves is as cunning as it is brazen. Exploiting the natural vulnerabilities of air travel – cramped spaces, distracted passengers, and the general confusion that often accompanies boarding and disembarking – criminals are able to operate with a degree of impunity that would be unthinkable in other contexts. These aren’t opportunistic crimes. We’re probably dealing with sophisticated criminal networks that have identified air travel as a lucrative hunting ground. They’re well-organised, often working in teams, and they know exactly what they’re looking for.
The focus on luxury watches is no coincidence. Easily concealed, highly valuable, and readily transportable, timepieces from brands like Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet have become the preferred target for these high-flying criminals. The compact nature of these items makes them ideal for quick theft and easy concealment, while their high resale value on the black market provides a substantial incentive for thieves.
But the impact of these thefts extends far beyond the immediate financial loss to the victims. The psychological toll of being robbed in what should be a secure environment can be significant, eroding trust in airlines and potentially dampening enthusiasm for air travel among high-net-worth individuals.
There’s a breach of trust that occurs when something like this happens. Air travel is already stressful for many people. Add in the fear of being robbed, and you’re creating a recipe for anxiety that can have long-lasting effects on an individual’s willingness to travel.
For airlines, particularly those serving routes to and from luxury destinations, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Hong Kong’s position as a global financial hub and a gateway to mainland China makes it an especially attractive target for criminals looking to prey on wealthy travellers. The city’s airlines now find themselves in the unenviable position of having to balance customer service with heightened security measures.
Airlines are actively exploring and implementing various security measures to enhance the safety of air travel, particularly in response to the increasing threat of theft during flights. Among the strategies being adopted are more rigorous pre-boarding security screenings aimed at identifying individuals with a history or suspicion of theft. Additionally, cabin crews are receiving enhanced training designed to help them recognise and respond to suspicious behaviour more effectively during flights.
To further bolster security, airlines are also considering the installation of more advanced CCTV systems within aircraft cabins, which would provide comprehensive video surveillance. Recognising the value passengers place on their personal belongings, some airlines are encouraging the use of in-flight safes for storing valuable items securely. Furthermore, there is a growing trend of airlines partnering with law enforcement agencies to exchange intelligence about criminal networks that specifically target air travellers.
Despite these efforts, the introduction of such measures has sparked concerns among various stakeholders. Privacy advocates are particularly alarmed by the potential implications of heightened surveillance in aircraft, expressing fears about the erosion of passenger privacy. Additionally, some industry analysts are skeptical about the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of these sophisticated security systems, especially if they were to be implemented on every single flight.
Michael Wong, an aviation security consultant, has voiced concerns over the potential for an overreaction to the threat of thefts. He warns that excessive security measures could foster an atmosphere of fear and suspicion, which might ultimately prove more detrimental to the airline industry than the thefts themselves.
In light of these developments, travellers are advised to take proactive steps to safeguard their belongings while flying. Experts recommend keeping valuable items on one’s person at all times and avoiding the use of overhead compartments for storing such items. If valuables must be placed in carry-on luggage, using a lock and maintaining visual contact with the bag is advised. Travellers should also practice discretion by not openly displaying expensive belongings, which could draw unwanted attention. Staying vigilant during boarding, disembarking, and any chaotic moments during the flight is crucial. Lastly, considering travel insurance that covers high-value items can provide an additional layer of security for those transporting expensive goods.
Ultimately, the same common-sense precautions that apply on the ground are equally important in the air. Be aware of your surroundings, keep your valuables secure, and trust your instincts if something doesn’t feel right. We’re entering a new era of aviation security. One where the threat isn’t just to the aircraft itself, but to the possessions and peace of mind of every passenger on board. It’s going to require innovative thinking and a willingness to adapt from everyone involved in air travel.
*We apologise for the earlier version of the article suggesting that the flight on which the HK$4.16 million watch was stolen was operated by Hong Kong Express. This information was incorrect, as Hong Kong Express does not operate routes to Switzerland .

A Hong Kong court convicts 2 journalists in a landmark sedition case
HONG KONG — A Hong Kong court convicted two former editors of a shuttered news outlet on Thursday in a sedition case widely seen as a barometer for the future of media freedoms in a city once hailed as a bastion of free press in Asia.
Stand News former editor-in-chief Chung Pui-kuen and former acting editor-in-chief Patrick Lam were arrested in December 2021. They pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to publish and reproduce seditious publications. Their trial was Hong Kong’s first involving the media since the former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997.
Stand News was one of the city’s last media outlets that openly criticized the government amid a crackdown on dissent that followed massive pro-democracy protests in 2019.
It was shut down just months after the pro-democracy Apple Daily newspaper, whose jailed founder Jimmy Lai is fighting collusion charges under a sweeping national security law enacted in 2020.

Chung and Lam were charged under a colonial-era sedition law used increasingly to crush dissidents. They face up to two years in prison and a fine of about $640 for a first offense.
Best Pencil (Hong Kong) Ltd., the outlet’s holding company, was convicted on the same charge. It had no representatives during the trial, which began in October 2022.
Judge Kwok Wai-kin said in his written judgement that Stand News became a tool for smearing the Beijing and Hong Kong governments during the 2019 protests.
He said a conviction is deemed proportional “when speech, in the relevant context, is deemed to have caused potential damage to national security and intends to seriously undermine the authority of the Chinese central government or the Hong Kong government, and that it must be stopped.”
The case was centered on 17 articles. Prosecutors said some promoted “illegal ideologies,” or smeared the security law and law enforcement officers. Judge Kwok ruled that 11 carried seditious intent, including commentaries written by activist Nathan Law and esteemed journalists Allan Au and Chan Pui-man. Chan is also Chung’s wife.
The judge found that the other six did not carry seditious intent, including in interviews with pro-democracy ex-lawmakers Law and Ted Hui, who are among overseas-based activists targeted by Hong Kong police bounties.
Chung appeared calm after the verdict while Lam did not appear in court due to health reasons. They were given bail pending sentencing on Sept. 26.
Defense lawyer Audrey Eu read out a mitigation statement from Lam, who said Stand News reporters sought to run a news outlet with fully independent editorial standards. “The only way for journalists to defend press freedom is reporting,” Eu quoted Lam as saying.
The delivery of the verdict was delayed several times for various reasons, including awaiting the appeal outcome of another landmark sedition case. Dozens of residents and reporters lined up to secure a seat for the hearing, which began an hour late.
Resident Kevin Ng, who was among the first in the line, said he used to be a reader of Stand News and has been following the trial. Ng, 28, said he read less news after its shutdown, feeling the city has lost some critical voices.
“They reported the truth; they defended press freedom,” Ng, who works in risk management industry, said of the editors.
Stand News shut down in December 2021, following a police raid at its office and the arrests. Armed with a warrant to seize relevant journalistic materials, more than 200 officers participated in the operation.
Hong Kong was ranked 135 out of 180 territories in Reporters Without Borders’ latest World Press Freedom Index, down from 80 in 2021. Self-censorship has also become more prominent during the political crackdown on dissent. In March, the city government enacted another new security law that raised concerns it could further curtail press freedom.
Foreign governments denounced Thursday’s verdict.
US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller wrote on X that the convictions were a “direct attack on media freedom” and undermined the city’s international reputation for openness.
Reporters Without Borders condemned the verdict, saying it set a “dangerous precedent” and dealt another blow against the city’s shattered press freedom.
Cédric Alviani, the global media watch dog’s Asia-Pacific bureau director, called the judicial decision “appalling.”
“From now on, anyone reporting on facts that are not in line with the authorities’ official narrative could be sentenced for sedition,” he said.

HONG KONG — (AP) — A Hong Kong court on Thursday convicted two former editors of a shuttered news outlet in a sedition case widely seen as a barometer for the future of media freedoms in a city once hailed as a bastion of free press in Asia.
The trial of Stand News former editor-in-chief Chung Pui-kuen and former acting editor-in-chief Patrick Lam was Hong Kong's first involving the media since the former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997.
Stand News, which closed in December 2021, had been one of the city’s last media outlets that openly criticized the government as it waged a crackdown on dissent following massive pro-democracy protests in 2019.
It was shut down just months after the pro-democracy Apple Daily newspaper , whose jailed founder Jimmy Lai is fighting collusion charges under a sweeping national security law enacted in 2020.
Chung and Lam had pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to publish and reproduce seditious publications — charges that were brought under a colonial-era sedition law used increasingly to crush dissidents. They face up to two years in prison and a fine of 5,000 Hong Kong dollars (about $640) for a first offense.
Best Pencil (Hong Kong) Ltd., the outlet's holding company, was convicted on the same charge. It had no representatives during the trial, which began in October 2022 .
Judge Kwok Wai-kin said in his written judgment that Stand News became a tool for smearing the Beijing and Hong Kong governments during the 2019 protests.
He said a conviction is deemed proportional “when speech, in the relevant context, is deemed to have caused potential damage to national security and intends to seriously undermine the authority of the Chinese central government or the Hong Kong government, and that it must be stopped.”
The case was centered on 17 articles Stand News had published.
The judge found that the other six did not carry seditious intent, including in interviews with pro-democracy ex-lawmakers Law and Ted Hui, who are among overseas-based activists targeted by Hong Kong police bounties .
Eu did not read out Chung's mitigation letter in court. But local media outlets quoted his letter, in which he wrote that many Hong Kongers who are not journalists have held to their beliefs, and some have lost their own freedom because they care about everyone’s freedom in the community.
“Accurately recording and reporting their stories and thoughts is an inescapable responsibility of journalists,” he wrote in that letter.
After the verdict, former Stand News journalist Ronson Chan said nobody had told reporters that they might be arrested if they did any interviews or write anything.
The delivery of the verdict was delayed several times for various reasons, including awaiting the appeal outcome of another landmark sedition case . Dozens of residents and reporters lined up to secure a seat for the hearing.
Resident Kevin Ng, who was among the first in the line, said he used to be a reader of Stand News and has been following the trial. Ng, 28, said he read less news after its shutdown, feeling the city has lost some critical voices.
“They reported the truth, they defended press freedom," Ng, who works in risk management industry, said of the editors.
Stand News shut down following a police raid at its office and the arrests of its leaders. Armed with a warrant to seize relevant journalistic materials, more than 200 officers participated in the operation.
Days after Stand News shut down, independent news outlet Citizen News also announced it would cease operations, citing the deteriorating media environment and the potential risks to its staff.
Hong Kong was ranked 135 out of 180 territories in Reporters Without Borders' latest World Press Freedom Index, down from 80 in 2021. Self-censorship has also become more prominent during the political crackdown on dissent. In March, the city government enacted another new security law that raised concerns it could further curtail press freedom .
Francis Lee, journalism and communication professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, said the ruling on which articles were seditious appears to be drawing lines. Whenever an article is about a one-sided political stance, highly critical or viewed as lacking factual basis, then that could be considered as smearing, Lee said.
Some of the court's logic differs from how journalists typically think, he said. Journalists "may have to be more cautious from now on.”
Eric Lai, a research fellow at Georgetown Center for Asian Law, said the ruling is in line with “the anti-free-speech trend” of rulings since the 2020 security law took effect, criminalizing journalists carrying out their professional duties.
Foreign governments criticized the convictions . U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller wrote on X that it was a "direct attack on media freedom."
However, Eric Chan, Hong Kong's Chief Secretary for Administration, insisted that when journalists conduct their reporting based on facts, there would not be any restrictions on such freedom.
Steve Li, chief superintendent of the police national security department, told reporters the ruling showed their enforcement three years ago — criticized by some as a suppression of free press — was necessary.
