Norway Cruise Highlights

Norwegian fjords.

Nature buffs and adventure seekers can’t miss seeing the stunning Norwegian fjords during their cruise. Bergen is a great jumping-off point to see fjords like Hardangerfjord, the country’s second-largest fjord. UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

How to Plan the Ultimate Norwegian Fjords Cruise

Norwegian Fjords Cruise Pin

Norwegian fjords cruises are top of the travel bucket list of so many people around the world. Here's how to plan yours, including what to know and what to avoid.

Norway's spellbinding coastline, enriched with historical cities, globally-known fjords, and tiny fishing communities have made the country a go-to destination for many travel enthusiasts eager to explore Scandinavia.

Options to travel the country are many and varied. With so many mountains and valleys, road trips a popular option.

But while a scenic drive provides awe-inspiring views, the experience on the deck of a ship as it sails the length of a fjord is hard to beat.

Small, brightly-coloured wooden cabins contrast against the green mountainsides, and birds circle overhead. Only in this way you can truly appreciate the sheer size and scale of these natural waterways.

In 2023, more people took a Norwegian fjords cruise than ever before. In this article, I'll introduce these popular cruises in Norway and explain why so many people want to take one.

Having been on several such trips myself, I'll also provide tips and advice for choosing the best itinerary for you, and how to make the most of your experience.

Pros and cons of a Norwegian fjords cruise

The dramatic landscapes of Norway are best appreciated from the water, letting travellers grasp the true grandeur of the fjords. Some itineraries focus on one fjord, and visit some of Norway's coastal cities in addition.

Other itineraries sail into more than one fjord, giving guests a thorough introduction to one of nature's wonders.

However, many potential cruisers might be unaware of recent developments regarding cruising these waters.

The Norwegian government has set forth restrictions, allowing only zero-emission vessels to cruise certain UNESCO World Heritage-listed fjords, set to begin in 2026.

This initiative, aiming at environmental preservation, essentially excludes the vast majority of traditional cruise ships from accessing some of Norway's iconic fjords . This includes the Geirangerfjord, Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord.

It's not the only issue to be aware of. As Norwegian fjord cruising's popularity surges, so does local concern about overtourism. Recent years have seen an upsurge in anti-cruise sentiments, with notices in certain destinations urging cruise tourists to reconsider their visits.

Port calls in the Norwegian fjords

There are many ports used by cruise ships in the fjords, including Eidfjord, Flåm, Geiranger, Hellesylt, Nordfjordeid, and Olden. They all have one thing in common: their small size!

Norway's Flåm with a cruise ship in dock.

Although the villages all have pretty settings, there isn't a lot to do in the ports themselves. It's wise to book an excursion or at least make a plan to do something with your time off the ship.

On the other hand, you may prefer to stay on the ship to enjoy the facilities while it's quiet. If your cruise ship has a spa, you may find special offers on port days. You can still enjoy the scenic sailaway when the ship leaves port.

Choosing a Norwegian fjords cruise

Cruising the Norwegian fjords is more than just ticking off a bucket list adventure; it's about selecting the right experience. First and foremost, it's important to understand that there is no such thing as a “typical” cruise.

They range in cruise length, accommodation standard, departure port, destinations, and onboard activities among many other factors. Any one factor can drastically alter the cruising experience, for the better, or for the worse.

It's not just about the ports

Most travellers make their cruise choice based on the ports of call. But when considering a fjord region itinerary, it's crucial to study the route in more detail, because the fjords matter just as much as the ports, if not more.

Determine the number of fjords the cruise will traverse and at what times. Some itineraries focus on ports, while others incorporate scenic cruising into the itinerary that might mean you spend a day sailing up and down a fjord but without a port call.

Some ships spend all day in tiny ports, only cruising the fjords very early in the morning or late into the evening. Though Norway's prolonged summer daylight provides ample viewing opportunity, it might not be the immersive experience some seek.

That's especially true if you prefer a leisurely dining experience followed by a show in the evening, rather than spending your time on deck.

Finally, it's not uncommon for some cruise lines to advertise fjord cruises that predominantly dock in major cities such as Bergen and Stavanger. While you'll still experience scenic coastline, it may not be the fjords experience you're imagining.

A view of Norway's Aurlandsfjord from Undredal village.

With that in mind, let's look at some of the most popular types of cruise itinerary.

The time-honoured Norwegian coastal route

Dating back to 1893, dual-purpose vessels have traversed the Norwegian coastline, offering both cargo and passenger services. Today, Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages continue this tradition on the Norwegian coastal route .

While they lack the entertainment extravagance of mainstream cruise liners, the coastal cruise ferries compensate with the charm of an authentic Norwegian experience and ever-changing scenery.

Another major difference from tradition cruise lines is that these ships make brief scheduled stops at numerous ports, providing a snapshot of life in multiple towns and villages. They also allocate ample time at more prominent ports like Ålesund, Trondheim, and Tromsø, allowing passengers to explore.

One important point. You will see spectacular scenery throughout the voyage, but the number of famous fjords visited by the ship is actually very small.

Havila Capella coastal cruise ship docking in Ålesund, Norway.

Sailing into Northern Norway’s narrow Trollfjord is a wonderful experience. During the summer the ships sail along the Geirangerfjord and in the autumn, the Hjørundfjord is often included on itineraries. Otherwise, the coastal route is not a fjord-focused voyage.

From the U.K. to the fjords

Some of the cruise ships most often spotted in the Norwegian fjords are lines sailing from the U.K. that focus on the British market.

Three of the ships from  P&O Cruises  regularly sail to the Norwegian fjords. These include two of P&O Cruises' adult-only ships and the LNG-powered Iona. The line offers 35 sailings from Southampton between April and September, the majority lasting seven days with a regular itinerary. A handful of longer 12-day voyages are also available.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines offers five-night to eight-night cruises from Southampton and Newcastle in the spring, summer and early fall. Occasionally there may be fjord itineraries from other ports such as Southampton or Dover. During the winter, Fred Olsen's focus switches to northern lights cruises to the north of Norway.

Many other cruise lines provide regular trips to the fjords, with departures from various U.K. locations and other European ports. Celebrity, Cunard, Holland America, and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) are among the options.

Balmoral cruise ship in Åndalsnes.

AIDA and MSC Cruises are among the European Lines to visit the fjords, although these lines often depart from Germany or Denmark.

Norwegian fjords plus other destinations

Multiple cruise lines offer extended itineraries that not only encompass the Norwegian fjords but also integrate other destinations like the British Isles, Iceland, or other parts of Northern Europe such as the Faroe Islands.

For instance, NCL and Viking feature fjords in their larger Northern European tours, giving travellers a more expansive experience.

A 15-day ‘Viking Homelands' itinerary from Viking Ocean Cruises starts in Stockholm. It calls in to historic ports including the Åland Islands, Gdansk, Bornholm, Copenhagen and Aalborg on its way to Norway and the fjords. This itinerary includes just one fjord–the Hardangerfjord on the way to and from Eidfjord–but it might suit those looking for a wider introduction to the region.

Another example of what's possible is from NCL on their new ship Norwegian Prima . An 11-day itinerary from Southampton includes stops at Zeebrugge and Amsterdam on the way to Norway's Geirangerfjord, before the ship makes its way to three ports of call in Iceland.

DIY fjords exploration

For those averse to long cruise journeys or seeking a more personal experience, several smaller vessels provide short sightseeing cruises. This option is perfect for integrating into a more extensive Norwegian road trip.

Meeting mountain goats on the Lysefjord sightseeing trip.

Some cruises, like the silent electric ferry from Flåm to Gudvangen through the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord, or the Lysefjord sightseeing cruise , don't even require having a car, making them perfect for foot travellers.

The Flåm to Gudvangen trip can be reached by train relatively easily (albeit slowly) from Oslo or Bergen thanks to the Flåm railway. For the Lysefjord trip, daily departures run from central Stavanger during high season.

What to pack for a Norwegian fjords cruise

This is a topic worth a blog post on its own. In fact, watch out for one, coming soon! In the meantime, here is some general packing advice for such a trip.

The fjords present a blend of chilly breezes, unpredictable rain, and awe-inspiring vistas. Yet you may also experience beautiful, sunny days. As such, you'll need to pack your case with thought.

Layered clothing : The key to staying comfortable is layering. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a warm mid-layer like a fleece or sweater, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer.

Waterproofs : Rain is common in Norway, especially in the fjords. Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket and trousers. Consider an umbrella too, but remember, it might not stand up against strong fjord winds.

Footwear : Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring towns and villages. For hikes, consider waterproof hiking boots with good grip.

Accessories : A beanie, warm gloves, and a scarf will keep you warm during chilly morning excursions or when you're out on the deck admiring the views.

Binoculars : Enhance your experience by getting a closer look at those distant waterfalls, wildlife, and mountain peaks.

Backup power : With the stunning landscapes, you'll be taking lots of photos. Bring a portable charger to ensure your camera or phone doesn't run out of juice. There will be charging points on board, but you'll have to leave the deck to use them!

You may also like to check out our packing list for a northern lights tour . While you (hopefully!) won't need as much cold weather clothing, it may still prove useful when planning what to bring to Norway.

In conclusion, Norway's fjords offer something for every traveller, be it a comprehensive cruise experience or a DIY exploration. The key is to choose the experience that aligns best with your own preferred travel style.

I took the train from Bergen to Myrdal and then the Flåmsbana to Flåm. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Glorious view throughout the 4 hour journey.

I then took the electric cruise to Gudvangen and back to Flåm again. It was my life’s bucket list item & I was not disappointed. The Gudvangen valley is a mystical, mythical experience. The boat features screens with historic & other information which greatly enriches the trip.

I then took a ferry along the entire length of Sognefjord – 5 hours – back to Bergen.

A brilliant 3 day experience.

I took the decision to travel Norway ‘like a local’ and have more control over my days. It worked out perfectly and cost me a fraction of the cost of a cruise.

I am following your info and travel. Especially the 12 dy Hurtigruten ferry trip. I have a file.Thank you. Moreso 2024

I will be in Ålesund (using public transportation) in late May to also visit Geiranger fjord. What are my best options? Can I combine a bus to Hellesylt for the ferry to Geiranger, then bus around the north side back to Ålesund? I appreciate any feedback. – Elizabeth

There is one bus operated by Vy that goes from Ålesund to Åndalsnes and then Åndalsnes to Geiranger, but it’s summer only. The other option is this one-way trip that combines a local bus with a passenger ferry: https://destinasjon-alesund-and-sunnmore.trekksoft.com/en_GB/tours/58733

History and Charm

Charming Trondheim is home to great history and a rich cultural life.

Magical, medieval and modern

Founded by Viking king Olav Tryggvason in 997, Trondheim today is a unique mix of the ancient and modern. Join our optional excursion to the soaring Nidaros Cathedral, Norway’s only gothic cathedral and the burial place of St. Olav (Tryggvason). Marvel at the cathedral’s exquisite works of art, architectural details and medieval statues.

In summer, we continue to Ringve Museum of Musical History, where Norwegian music´s past is brought to life in a grand manor with a fantastic view.

Excursions for every taste

Explore Trondheim by kayak on the River Nid or experience the city by bicycle, for something truly unique, be sure to ride the world’s only bicycle lift, near the quaint Bakklandet neighbourhood. You can also join the Hurtigruten Guides for a hike to discover more of the area.

In the afternoon, the ship sails northwest, passing the Kjeungskjær lighthouse, islets and rocky reefs and onwards towards charming Rørvik.

Following this, we journey towards Stamsund and the home of the Vikings. Join an excursion to visit the Lofotr Viking Museum, where you are welcomed into the chieftain’s house for a real Viking feast.

Lofoten, Where Nature Amazes

We arrive in Harstad, where you can join the excursion, A Taste of Vesterålen .

Amazing scenery

The island groups of Lofoten and Vesterålen offer some of the most stunning natural scenery of the entire voyage. Lofoten is renowned for its steep mountains, sandy beaches, wild nature and picturesque fishing villages.

Hurtigruten’s birthplace

We make a short stop at Risøyhamn, population 200, to deliver passengers, groceries and mail, and then continue to Stokmarknes, where Hurtigruten was founded more than 125 years ago.

Go ashore and visit the Hurtigruten Museum. Continuing south, we slip through a passage into the narrow Raftsund, past peaks rising 1,000 metres from the sea.

Spectacular Trollfjord

We now reach spectacular Trollfjord, only 2 km long, 100 m wide and surrounded by majestic mountains. If possible, we sail inside, where the dramatic landscape inspires images of fairy tales and trolls. Just north, you can opt to see sea eagles up close by boat.

Mountain with a hole

As we sail along the Helgeland coast, you’ll see the strange mountain Torghatten, famous for its distinctive hole in the centre. The opening is 160 m long, 35 m high and 20 m wide, and was created during the ice age. If the weather allows, join a hike with your guides up the mountain.

Myths and legends

We also sail past the Seven Sisters mountain range – with peaks up to 1,100 m high. The story goes that seven beautiful troll sisters got caught out at sunrise and turned to stone, thus the seven beautiful peaks.

UNESCO heritage

We next make a short stop at UNESCO-listed Nesna, before moving on to Sandnessjøen. From there we voyage towards Brønnøysund a pretty little town that offers a charming high street and marina. Rich History and Living Culture

Spend the morning in Trondheim, then sail past beautiful island scenery and some of Norway’s smallest communities before exploring Kristiansund and Molde.

Capital of the Viking Age

Stroll around  Trondheim  in the early morning as the city wakes. Visit the sacred  Nidaros Cathedral , resting place of St. Olav. Then, walk to  Gamle Bybro  bridge for a photo opportunity over  Nid River .

Treat yourself to quality coffee and a Nordic patisserie in one of the  Bakklandet  district’s many chic cafés then walk up to  Kristiansten Fort  for great views of Norway’s third largest city.

Dealing in dried cod

We dock at Kristiansund’s harbour in the late afternoon. The town is spread over three islands and known for being Norway’s “Bacalao Capital” for the salted cod that’s dried on the surrounding cliffs, called  klippfisk  in Norwegian.

Take a walk around the cobblestone streets of the old town and tour the lively port. You can also head up to the old watchtower at  Varden viewpoint  for a lovely panorama.

Peaks and petals

The penultimate port of the day is  Molde  where you can spot the tops of the  Romsdal Alps . Nicknamed “The City of Roses”, flowers should be in bloom between mid-June and late August.

We sail through picturesque Nordfjord beneath Jostedal Glacier . This rugged coastal region features farms with fruit orchards and glacial fingers that stretch towards glistening lakes. In the morning, we call at  Florø .

Back to Bergen

We navigate the mouth of the mighty Sognefjord and enjoy superb views of the island-studded coastline before you disembark in Bergen.

Frequently asked questions about the norwegian fjords.

The Norwegian Fjords is an astounding landscape made of many narrow deep seas, framed by dramatic mountainous land. The Norwegian fjords were created by moving glaciers over a period of 2.5 million years – Mother Nature certainly took her time to make these marvels.

This breathtaking region is a bucket-list destination for many as it offers such a wealth of experiences; from adventurous pursuits like mountain hiking and kayaking, to visiting Viking sites, and savouring the tasty local delicacies - waffles and ice cream, yes please!

Tumbling waterfalls that you can almost touch, majestic mountains that seem to rise higher and higher, and oh-so serene waterways. A Norwegian Fjords cruise is a perfect holiday destination.  And ‘Fjord’ is in fact an ancient Viking term related to the phrase ‘where you travel across’ and the word ‘ferry’ – so the fjords for centuries have been central to the story of sea travel.

The fjords in Norway are chock-full with exciting things to see and do on a cruise holiday. Here’s a suggestion of what you might enjoy: come face-to-face with the crowning glory of Olden’s landscape – the mighty Briksdal Glacier; visit a farmstead and learn to cook local dishes; kayak amidst the dramatic scenery of UNESCO listed Geirangerfjord; and breathe in the freshest air at one of the many vertiginous viewpoints, whilst taking in the epic sweeping scenery – and that’s just for starters.

The weather in the Norwegian Fjords can be quite changeable – the Norwegians even have a saying: “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.” We’d recommend planning for all weather; tops, jumpers, coats and maybe an umbrella!

During the summer, you could also bring t-shirts, shorts, jeans and perhaps a light jacket and definitely some walking shoes so that you can explore all the magical sights.

Depending on the dress code on board, you have two choices of what to pack for the evenings. Nights where the dress code is Evening Casual, you can pack your best shirts, dresses and smart, dark denim. For nights where the dress code is Black Tie, make sure to pack your best tux, suit or cocktail dress.

There are some venues on each cruise ship where dress codes don’t apply, so make sure to check your Horizon paper that’s delivered to your cabin each day to check where these are, as they vary ship by ship. For those travelling on family-friendly ships, dress codes also don’t apply to children aged 17 and under.

The food of Norway is very much of its surroundings; the mountains, rivers, ocean and raw materials available have shaped traditional Norwegian cuisine. Local meats, grains and vegetables are readily available along with some of the most incredible seafood. If you fancy breaking bread with a local, or enjoying access to little known foodie haunts, check out our foodie shore experiences available to view in My P&O Cruises once you have made your booking.

The weather in Fjord Norway is known to be particularly changeable, regardless of the season. However you’ll of course still experience seasonal variances. During the springtime it begins to warm up and is particularly beautiful and bountiful with the fruit trees in full blossom. During the summer, the days are long and you can experience highs of 25ºC. The days get shorter and cooler in the autumn with the chance of rain at its greatest, and in the winter months it’s at its coldest and snowiest.

Days are generally bright and long in the summertime - perfect for enjoying all of the region’s natural beauty. During the summer months the Norwegians enjoy spending as much time outdoors revitalising. Most of the snow in the mountains has melted away, so it makes hiking and cycling the terrain all the more easier. In the towns people like to relax with al fresco drinks and barbecues – you’ll find specialties of grilled fish, pork chops and potato salad.

As we visit the Norwegian Fjords in the summer months it is highly unlikely that you’ll see the Northern Lights, but fear not, you’ve a chance to spot the mesmerising phenomenon on our winter holidays to Norway .

Visas aren’t required for a Norway Fjords holidays with us on stays shorter than 90 days. However you’ll need to ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the period of stay. Further official travel advice can be found on the government website: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/norway/entry-requirements

The Norwegian Fjords are only one hour ahead of the UK.

Norwegian Krone (NOK)

The Norwegian Fjords are dotted with picture-perfect towns, and with us you can explore the local cultures and scenery of: Bergen, Stavanger, Skjolden, Olden, Ålesund, Åndalsnes, Geiranger, Haugesund, Hellesylt, Kristiansund, Kristiansand, Trondheim and Nordfjordeid.

Norwegian is spoken in the Norwegian Fjords. It’s a descendant of Old Norse - the common language of the peoples of the Viking Era.

When sailing with P&O Cruises, you can enjoy a spell-binding holiday of 7-12 nights on a Norwegian Fjords cruise. So how long do you fancy?

Fly-cruises aren’t available, but you can take a leisurely sailing from Southampton with us. Sailing from Southampton affords you the luxury of holiday relaxation as soon as you board your ship. Bliss.

There are a staggering 1,190 fjords in Norway and the Svalbard islands - we simply can’t sail through all of them, but you’re sure to experience many of the highlights.

The breathtaking Norwegian fjords that you can visit on a Norway cruise include: Sunnylvsfjorden, Geirangerfjord, Innvikfjorden, Storfjorden, Nordfjord and Romsdalsfjord.

The Norwegian Fjords are beautiful throughout the year, but we think especially so in the bright spring and summer months. Sail with us on a Norwegian Fjords cruise from April to September to enjoy blooming wildflower meadows and long summer days.

Norwegian Fjords Cruises

Explore the most amazing nordic treasures with a norwegian fjords cruise.

The Norwegian Fjords are undoubtedly among the most beautiful natural landscapes in the world, capable of inspiring awe with their majestic beauty and timeless atmosphere. Norway has over a thousand Fjords, Geirangerfjord and the Naerøyfjord being the largest. Since 2005, they have featured in the list of UNESCO heritage sites – and they’re now accessible on an exclusive MSC Norwegian Fjords cruise.   The Norway Fjords cruise is one of the best ways to visit these earthly and imposing spectacles thanks to the deep water surrounding them, which is both smooth and easy to navigate. It was most valuable to experience Norway, its capital, the fjords and Bergen, in a short time. This first touch of Norway will lead us to the next tour to know the country further. The package with suggestions was perfect for self-tour. Easy access to the transportation. The hotel locations were perfect for transportation points and attractions. Highly recommended. Thanks Nordic Visitor!

This was my second experience using Nordic Visitor. I am a very satisfied customer. A few years ago we did a self-drive tour of Iceland that was just amazing. This time we did a train/cruise combo tour of Norway. Once again, I can only say you will have a fantastic experience and you will appreciate the labuor of organising and planning being handled by experts who know what they are doing. The cruises through the fjords were beautiful as were the train trips. We loved the combination of train and boat travel as each offered distinct beauty from a different perspective. The country is truly lovely and we look forward to booking future travel with Nordic Visitor!

Frequently Asked Questions About Fjord Cruise & Train Tours

You may have a few questions about your self-guided fjord and cruise tour, so we’ve gathered the important ones for your convenience. You can also find more information about Norway in our travel guide , or if you want information about payment details and processes, check out our FAQs .

1. How were Norway’s fjords formed?

A fjord is a narrow inlet connected to the sea with steep cliffs and is created when a glacier retreats from land, leaving behind a U-shaped valley that was “cut” or segregated by the ice.

Want some travel inspiration and photos of the fjords? Read our blog on the best Instagram locations in Norway.

2. What is a self-guided tour?

When you travel on a self-guided tour, you travel without a guide or a group. You’re certainly not alone though, as you’re provided with all of your itineraries, tickets, bookings and recommendations. We have a 24-hour emergency helpline as well, so should anything unexpected arise, we’re only a phone call away.

3. What is the best way to see the fjords in Norway?

The fjords were formed during the ice age. Each one is a natural phenomenon that brings travellers from across the world to view its clean waters, steep cliffs and natural wildlife. Named as one of the top places to visit in Northern Europe this year , the best way to discover the fjords really depends on how you like to travel.

Our rail and cruise tours offer you the best of both worlds. You have an expert guide to help you plan your route and bookings, but all of the perks of self-guided travel. These include choosing how much time you want in each area, and having the freedom to add dates and activities within the tour.

Each fjord cruise and train package features iconic rail journeys such as  Norway in a Nutshell® , as well as Norwegian cruises on Havila or Hurtigruten ships.

On the other hand, self-drive options are also popular due to the flexibility that comes with our packages. Our driving tours allow you to venture to restaurants and attractions that are further off the beaten path, all in your own time.

If you’d prefer a local guide to show you around, then a small group tour could be the right match for you. Our group tours are unique in that we keep numbers low so that you have more time to spend learning from your guide. We also use smaller minibuses that are more versatile when sightseeing.

However you prefer to see the fjords, you can rely on your travel consultant to help you plan out your Norway holiday and be there each step of the way.

4. What is the best time to cruise the fjords?

Each travel season has pros and cons so there’s no straight answer to this – however we can give you a good idea of what it will be like in Norway during different times, so that you can make the best decision for your trip.

Chasing the northern lights  is understandably on many people's bucket lists. Many travellers head to Northern Norway hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive “dancing” aurora borealis.

The best time to see them is in the autumn and winter seasons, between September and March. So be ready to wrap up warm as these months bring wintry conditions such as snowfall and chilly temperatures.

If you’re keener to experience Norway in milder weather, though, the spring and summer seasons are well-known for long days, " midnight sun ", and warm weather. Perfect if you want those summer snaps of the fjords and the opportunity to join bird watching and kayaking excursions.

Whichever you prefer, we have reliable departure dates and most of our packages can be booked in any month.

Learn more about seeing the northern lights in Norway on our blog on the best time and areas to see them.

5. What is the best fjord in Norway?

No two fjords in Norway are alike as they are naturally formed geological features. The sights from a fjord cruise along Sognefjord will differ greatly to those seen in Geirangerfjord. However, we can recommend the most popular choices that you could see on our rail and cruise packages:

  • Geirangerfjord
  • Nærøyfjord
  • Hardangerfjord
  • Romsdalsfjord

Check out our comprehensive blog article on the most beautiful fjords in Norway for detailed information on which ones may be best for you.

6. Can I choose the arrival date?

Yes, you can choose your preferred arrival date as most of our packages have daily departures. We recommend booking as soon as you can, though, as you will want to secure your ideal dates.

Also, please be aware that we need a few days to confirm bookings. Once we have organised all your travel plans in Norway, and confirmed this via email, then you can book your flight tickets with confidence.

7. Can we add extra nights in some areas?

Our travel consultants understand that you may want more time in the charming fjord villages and cities. You can add days before, during and after the tour. Simply add these on when booking online or if you’ve already booked and want to add dates then contact your dedicated travel consultant as soon possible.

8. How much can we customise a tour?

We appreciate that our customers have travel wishlists when they come to Norway, so we cram as many must-see attractions and insider recommendations as we can into our packages. But you can still add extra days to your trip.

If you have a particular must-do activity, or a must-see place, discuss it with your consultant. We’ll do our best to add it to your itinerary.

Also, our standard  Norway in a Nutshell® itineraries  go from Oslo to Bergen , but you can also travel in the opposite direction. Keep an eye out for links that say, "Looking to start your tour from Bergen instead?" if this is your preference.

9. Are hotels far away from train stations or cruise terminals?

We carefully choose accomodation that’s both comfortable and convenient for our guests. The majority of our hotels are based in the city centre and are within walking distance of the stations. However, your hotel can book a taxi for you to get to the station if that is your preference.

10. What should I pack and wear for a Norwegian fjord cruise?

You should always bring a variety of sensible layers to add or remove when travelling in Norway. The weather can be unpredictable, so don’t forget to pack:

  • A warm jumper or fleece
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Comfortable walking shoes/boots/trainers
  • Warm socks (specifically for winter travel)

An umbrella can also come in handy, and cruise passengers may wish to bring binoculars to see the fjords and the local wildlife better. To get ideas on how to dress well for the Nordic climate, check out our useful packing guide .

Get in touch with our friendly team if you want to learn more about our packages, book an optional cruise or arrange additional days.

On a cruise to Iceland, unveil Grundarfjordur’s heroic past. Climb the "Holy Mountain," which once housed a temple dedicated to Thor. Why Cruise Norway & Iceland

The majestic beauty and natural phenomena of Northern Europe offers an adventure like no other.

Natural splendors

Natural splendors abound in Norway and Iceland. In Grundarfjördur, marvel at the seascapes, fjords and tidal currents within Breidafjordur Bay. Rejuvenate in the mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik. Or fly over Godafoss Waterfall, the ‘Waterfall of the Gods,’ during a flightseeing tour in Akureyri. Come face-to-face with Mother Nature’s crown jewels — only on an Norway and Iceland cruise with Princess.

The search for phenomena

Travel to Alta, the "City of the Northern Lights," for a chance to see the sky painted lime green. Cruise to Iceland in June and bask in 24 hours of daylight during the summer solstice. Or visit Honningsvag for a glimpse of the Midnight Sun during your evening departure. While we can’t guarantee you’ll see these natural phenomena, we can promise that the journey is just as exciting as the wonders themselves.

Norway & Iceland excursions

Our award-winning Norway and Iceland cruise shore excursions bring you to natural wonders, wildlife and landmarks. Relax in Reykjavik’s Blue Lagoon while gazing at snowy landscapes. Get up close to Akureyri’s 35-foot waterfall that tumbles into the Skjálfandafljót River below. Or travel to the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Farm in Grundarfjordur to learn how to make hákarl, a 400-year old Icelandic delicacy.

More ashore

Enjoy even more marvels and mysteries with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. On a Norway cruise to Alta, search for the Aurora Borealis at midnight with a cup of hot chocolate in hand. Attend a summer concert at Tromsø’s Arctic Cathedral to welcome the return of the Midnight Sun. Or enjoy a 9-hour journey through Reykjavik’s landscapes on itineraries that depart later in the evening.

Five-night Fjords: Perfect for first-time cruisers

Balmoral in Eidfjord

There is such a vast and diverse choice of cruises available today – from short city breaks to epic, almost-200-night-long explorations of the globe – that it can prove difficult for anyone, let alone first-time cruisers, to narrow down their options, find the perfect holiday and book themselves on a voyage to remember.

With this in mind, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines strive to create holidays that not only appeal to the most seasoned of guests, but also make for an ideal first foray into the world of cruising, including a collection of short, yet highly rewarding five-night cruises to the spellbinding Norwegian Fjords.

These sailings capture the very essence of cruising with Fred. Olsen, offering guests the chance to enjoy unforgettable experiences on board their smaller, friendlier cruise ship and ashore in some of the world’s most beautiful and inspirational destinations – all while spending less than a week away.

Here are four reasons why one of Fred. Olsen’s five-night escape to Norway’s awe-inspiring fjordland might be just the introduction to cruising you have been looking for…

Braemar Fjord Cruising

It is just the right amount of time...

...to get a feel for exploring the world on a Fred. Olsen ship and to experience what life on board is like. A five-night fjord adventure allows ample time to delight in the company of hundreds, not thousands, of friendly, like-minded fellow guests; sit back and relax in the comfort of spacious lounges and bars, with a glass or two of your favourite holiday drink perhaps; make use of all your ship’s facilities and amenities; and enjoy a range of fantastic entertainment.

That’s not to mention what many guests highlight as the best part of their on board experience: the food! Every dining occasion on a Fred. Olsen ship is one to remember, whether it’s tucking into a delicious breakfast cooked just the way you like it, for a perfect start to the day, or devouring five sumptuous á la carte courses at dinner.

And of course, you’ll get to experience what it’s like being at sea, sailing the world’s vast, deep waters en route to regions and destinations that will take your breath away, leaving all the potential stress, strains and worries of life at home back in the UK. A five-night cruise is your chance to escape it all for a little while!

A short itinerary…

...is still an immensely rewarding, incredibly immersive itinerary! A five-night cruise into Norway’s wonderland of mystical fjords and waterways will always feature breathtaking scenic cruising passing through and by simply astonishing landscapes, as well as visits to attraction-packed ports in the region.

You could marvel at the eerie tranquillity and astounding beauty of Lysefjord or the narrow, twisting Nærøyfjord, sailing routes by magnificent mountains and dramatic cliff faces that larger ships can’t access; see the ‘Queen of the Fjords’, Hardangerfjord, and its towering peaks and idyllic orchards; and witness Mother Nature at work, sailing by wonders such as the Maurangerfjord’s tumbling Furebergfoss Waterfall.

As for ports of call, Fred. Olsen’s five-night fjord adventures often visit the iconic, Hanseatic city of Bergen, which is packed with attractions including the colourful, UNESCO-listed Bryggen Wharf; the Troldhaugen Museum, dedicated to life and works of Edvard Grieg; and the fantastic funicular railway ride up Mount Fløyen. Elsewhere, Eidfjord – gateway to the vast mountain plateau of Hardangervidda National Park and Voringfossen Waterfall, and a popular place to experience the unique thrill of fjordland kayaking – is another often-visited destination.

Mount Floyen, Bergen, Norway

Any time spent exploring the spectacular Norwegian Fjords is time you’ll remember forever, and on a Fred. Olsen five-night fjord cruise you’re sure to make memories that last a lifetime.

Exciting Shore Tours...

...can help you uncover the very best of each region and destination on your five-night fjord itinerary, and provide unique, exhilarating and unforgettable experiences.

From sightseeing excursions that can take you to feel the refreshing spray from cascading white-water waterfalls, gaze into the sky at towering mountain peaks and marvel at dramatic rock formations to hiking adventures seeking out hidden treasures and kayaking trips offering an unrivalled view of the fjordland from the water, you can do it all.

Kayaking in Eidfjord

There is an extensive collection of Shore Tours available, expertly planned to make your time in the fjords as memorable as possible.

Whetting your cruise appetite...

…for more, a Fred. Olsen five-night fjord cruise will leave you wanting to cruise again and again. You might want to return to the fjords for a longer exploration, or even continue onwards to remote islands within the Arctic Circle; discover incredible cities in Europe or the Baltic; or perhaps escape to the warmer climes of the Canaries, Spain and Portugal, or even the Caribbean, South Pacific islands and Asia.

Fred. Olsen cruise from five convenient UK ports and fly-cruise to over 200 destinations far and wide, from the islands and lochs of Scotland to exotic locations on the other side of the globe, so you’ll always find the perfect cruise holiday.
