10 Wheelchair Accessible Cruises to Consider for Your Next Vacation

best wheelchair friendly cruises

cruising with kids Taking a cruise is a very popular vacation option for wheelchair accessibility and for those with disabilities because everything is available within the confines of the ship. Wheelchair accessible cruises and disabled cruises are floating vacations with everything from pools and fine dining to relaxation and spacious living quarters. There’s no need to worry about transportation or mobility once you’re on the ship, as it’s all included and ready for you to explore.

The following 10 wheelchair accessible and disabled cruises cover 5 different destinations: Alaska, the Caribbean, Hawaii, the Bahamas, and Scandiavia or Northern Europe, with 5 different cruise lines. This gives you a wide range of destinations and experiences to choose from. For each of the handicap cruises mentioned in this article , there are disabled cabins on cruise ships and they would be perfect for any wheelchair user or senior with disabilities. Almost all cruises are handicap accessible cruises due to the staterooms and accommodations.

When planning a cruise, whether it’s one that’s been recommended below or to any destination you choose, it’s important to remember to contact the cruise line with any questions. Many cruise ships will dock at each destination, but not every port of call is wheelchair accessible. Speaking with the cruise line about excursions and wheelchair accessibility is the best way to ensure your wheelchair cruise suits your needs.

The Best Wheelchair Accessible Cruises and Disabled Cruises to Consider

1: Alaskan Cruise with Holland America

Alaska is a great destination for disabled cruises because you can see so much from the ship itself and enjoy the destination without having to disembark sometimes. Many of the ports are also docked, which makes it easy to go explore each city, see a show, and do some shopping, along with take in the sights and experiences.  Ports of call  on these cruises include Ketchikan, Juneau , Skagway, and Glacier Bay.

One of the best ways to take a cruise to Alaska in terms of wheelchair accessibility is with  Holland America . There are a variety of Alaskan wheelchair accessible cruises available through this cruise line. The best time to see Alaska is from April to September, due to the weather and these cruises can be scheduled quickly if you’re booking in that window.

Half of the Holland America cruise ships travel to and from Alaska, but  one of the most wheelchair and handicap accessible ships is Nieuw Amsterdam . This ship provides 7 day cruises in Alaska, including the Glacier Discovery Northbound, Glacier Discovery Southbound, and Alaskan Inside Passage. Cruises depart from Vancouver, BC, Canada and Whittier, Alaska.

Holland America is excellent in terms of accessibility from check in to check out. There’s a specific wheelchair and special assistance check in, the staterooms are very accessible and spacious, and there are accessible restrooms on the most popular levels so you don’t have to waste vacation time traveling back to your room.

2: Alaskan Cruise with Carnival

Another great Alaska option is taking a cruise with Carnival. There are  three different Carnival cruise ships that offer an Alaska trip : the Carnival Miracle with 10 day or 11 day cruises leaving from San Francisco, California, the Carnival Spirit with a 7 day or 8 day cruise leaving from Seattle, Washington, and the Carnival Legend with a 9 day cruise leaving from Vancouver, BC, Canada. The Alaska cruises typically run from April to September, as this is the best weather window for visiting Alaska.

The ports of call depend on how long your cruise is, but typically most Alaska cruises with Carnival visit several of the same destinations. The most popular destinations with wheelchair accessible excursions include: Skagway, Ketchikan , and Icy Strait Point. There’s also plenty to do in Juneau and Victoria. Most wheelchair and handicap accessible excursions include a tour, from  a train ride at White Pass Summit  to a village tour in Ketchikan and a whale cruise at Icy Strait Point.

A unique feature of the Carnival Alaska cruises is the day of  Cruising the Tracy Arm Fjord . This is an on ship experience because everyone stays aboard the ship and the ship passes through a narrow waterway surrounded by glaciers on both sides.

Carnival offers a variety of accessibility accommodations, including wheelchair accessible staterooms. There are four different types of accessible staterooms available and  Carnival uses a Mobility Questionaire  to help assign the appropriate room to guests requiring accommodations.

3: Caribbean Cruise with Carnival

Carnival is also a great cruise line for traveling to the Caribbean. This cruise line offers trips to the  West, East, and Southern Caribbean  departing from multiple locations along the east coast including Florida, Alabama, Texas, Virginia, New York, South Carolina, and Maryland. Cruises can last anywhere from 4 days to 14 days, which makes it easy to enjoy the trip no matter the length of your vacation. The shorter trips, 4 to 7 days, typically cover the West and East, while the longer trips, 14 days, visit the south.

The 4 to 5 day cruises occur on the Carnival Sensation and the Carnival Fantasy. These trips have  two ports of call ,  Key West  and  Cozumel  where you can take tours to explore the port and maybe even spend some time at the beach. A 6 day cruise typically has 3 stops, but these ports are all different from the shorter cruises, with ports at Nassau, Amber Cove, Grand Turk, and Half Moon Cay, depending on the cruise. Each port has plenty to explore from shopping and dining to beaches, tours, and other excursions. The Carnival Magic, Breeze, and Fascination all run 6 day cruises.

Carnival cruises are great options for anyone looking to take their first cruise. It’s a common cruise line and can be a solid opportunity for a wheelchair cruise, a cruise for seniors with disabilities, or even cruising with kids , as Carnival has a kid’s club and many activities are geared toward children. Carnival offers 4 different accessible staterooms on most of their cruise ships and works with guests to ensure their stateroom suits their needs.

4: Caribbean Cruise with Disney

Disney is a popular cruise line and their cruises to the Caribbean are more popular due to the Disney island stop, Castaway Cay. Disney cruises are great for families and because of this target audience, they’re also great in terms of wheelchair and handicap accessibility. When looking for a cruise for wheelchair users, consider a Disney cruise. While they are typically more expensive, they may also offer more accessible excursions with a family focused atmosphere.

Disney cruises visit Western, Eastern, and Southern Caribbean, depending on which trip you book.  4 night cruises  are aboard the Disney Wonder and depart from Galveston, Texas or New Orleans, Louisiana. These short cruises have one port of call, Cozumel, Mexico , which is great for exploring the beach. There’s also 2 days at sea with plenty to do, as Disney hosts magnificent days at sea parties with unique themes. The ideal time of year to take a Disney cruise to the Caribbean is December to May, outside of hurricane season.

7 night cruises  are aboard the Disney Fantasy and depart from Florida, Texas, or Lousisana. Some of these cruises even stop at Castaway Cay twice, which is perfect for getting in beach time and to explore each destination.  Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island, is very handicap accessible  with wide, paved walking paths, sand wheelchairs, an accessible tram, and accessible bathrooms.

Disney cruises are very accessible , from spacious staterooms to accessible bathrooms. Disney provides a list of amenities in each accessible stateroom, as well as a Special Services department to ensure your cruise fulfills all your accessibility needs. A Disney cruise is a great option for all ages, as each cruise provides plenty of on board entertainment and activity along with beautiful ports of call.

5: Hawaiian Cruise with Disney

Another great destination with  Disney Cruises is Hawaii . You get all the luxury and accessibility of the  staterooms , the wonderful on board entertainment and events, along with a beautiful destination and beachy ports of call. Hawaii cruises with Disney tend to be longer trips, 9 and 10 nights, and have a limited range of ports to depart from.

There is limited availability on these cruises as well, with the  Disney Wonder  leaving from Vancouver, BC, Canada. Each cruise has a port of call at three or four Hawaiian islands, making sure your whole trip is spent in paradise. The best time to take a Hawaii cruise is during good weather, to avoid storms, ideally April to September.

A  10 day cruise to Hawaii with Disney  includes 5 days at sea and 5 destinations, all of which are different Hawaiian islands. A cruise of this length gives you plenty of time onboard to enjoy the shows, dining experiences, character meet and greets, and onboard entertainment, while also getting to visit several Hawaiian destinations to visit the beach, tour the towns, take pictures, and enjoy the atmosphere.

6: Hawaiian Cruise with Norwegian

A unique cruising experience is visiting Hawaii with  Norwegian Cruise Line . This line offers long, 14 day cruises starting or ending in Hawaii, along with 7 day Hawaii round trip cruises. This is a unique cruise experience in that you start your cruise in Hawaii and can end in Tahiti or take the ship all the way to Vancouver, depending on your preference. Many cruises are round trip from one specific port, but Norwegian offers a chance to explore even more on one cruise.

The  7 day round trip cruise  starts and ends on the island of Hawaii with the ship Pride of America. Ports include popular Hawaiian islands such as Kahului, Hilo, and Kona, and is one of the most well-known and popular cruise options to this destination. Norwegian runs this cruse year-round, which makes it easy to book for whenever you’re ready to take a vacation.

The  11 day cruise  starts in Hawaii and ends in Vancouver, which is an amazing way to end a vacation. You can start in Hawaii for a few days, enjoy the island, then island hop your way home to Vancouver and fly from there. Port activities include visiting the beaches, shopping, and spending time at museums, educational centers, and national parks. There’s something for everyone on these trips for all ages and mobility restrictions.

Norwegian Cruise Line believes that cruising should be enjoyed by everyone, which is why they strive to provide the best service for guests with disabilities, handicaps, mobility restrictions, and wheelchair users. Norwegian has  Special Assistance Coordinators  to help ensure your cruise fulfills your needs, from a specific stateroom to any other accommodations.

7: Bahamas Cruise with Norwegian

Norwegian Cruise Line also offers wonderful cruises for wheelchair users to a variety of destinations, including the Bahamas. Just like with Hawaii,  Norwegian offers  some unique experiences on their cruises to the Bahamas, including one cruise that leaves New York City, stops in Florida for some theme park fun, and then cruises to the Bahamas for fun, sun, and beachy afternoons. They offer 3 day, 4 day, or 5 day cruises from Florida, or a 10 day or 11 day cruise from NYC. The ships that travel this route include the Norweigan Sky, Norweigan Sun, and Norweigan Escape.

Most of these  cruises are round-trip , which makes it easy to arrive at your port, board the ship, and enjoy the trip. Ports of call include Grand Bahama Island, Grand Stirrup Cay, and Nassau on the shorter trips, and additional stops in Orlando and Bermuda for the 11 day cruise. This is a great cruise to visit the beaches, enjoy the warm weather, and to escape daily life for a few days. The best time to travel to the Bahamas is after November and before May, to have the best weather.

Norwegian wants everyone to enjoy their stay and works to provide the best staterooms and service to accommodate the needs of every guest. They have wheelchair accessible staterooms and events for everyone both onboard and at each port as an excursion.  Contact Norwegian Cruise Line  for specifics.

8: Bahamas Cruise with Royal Caribbean

Similar to traveling to the Bahamas with Norwegian, Royal Caribbean cruises leave from Florida, Texas, and other eastern coastal states of the United States to explore Nassau, Key West, and Cozumel. This is the perfect cruise for wheelchair users, people with disabilities, and seniors with disabilities as it gives everyone a chance to enjoy the warm weather and get a chance to enjoy beyond their everyday.

Royal Caribbean offers cruises  in a range of lengths, from 3 nights to 4 and 5 nights, along with a week long 7 day to 14 days and beyond. Ships that travel to the Bahamas include the Mariner of the Seas, Empress of the Seas, and Independence of the Seas. All ships offer accessible staterooms and excursions. Reservations require a  Guest with Special Needs Form  to ensure you are assigned the proper stateroom.

Nassau  is a docked port, which means it will be the most wheelchair accessible and allows everyone a chance to get off the ship and explore. There’s beautiful beaches, boat rides, tours, and plenty of shopping. This is a great place for a short cruise over a weekend or a longer cruise to enjoy more of the Bahamas.

9: Scandinavia with Royal Caribbean

On  Royal Caribbean, their ship Jewel of the Seas  takes guests to Scandinavia and Russia over 7, 8, or 10 days. This ship departs from Copenhagen, Denmark or Stockholm, Sweden depending on the trip. These trips are part of the Baltic Cruises this cruise line offers. The best time to visit Scandinavia and Northern Europe is from April to August for the best weather window.

One of the benefits of traveling with Royal Caribbean is that the itinerary tells you if your port will be docked or tendered. Docked is the best option for those with disabilities, mobility limitations, and wheelchair accessibility. Most of the ports of call on the Baltic Cruises are docked, with the rare exception depending on your cruise.

Popular ports of call include Tallinn, Estonia , St. Petersburg, Russia , and Helsinki, Finland . Longer cruises have a few more ports of call including Visby, Sweden. Each location on any of the  three cruises  include amazing local dining, comprehensive tours and museums to take in the local history, and plenty of shopping for gifts, souvenirs and pictures to document your trip.

Royal Caribbean fully supports that travel should be accessible for all and works to provide accessible staterooms and excursions to all their guests. Their website includes a  request form for accessible excursions and a list of tendered ports , which are not typically wheelchair accessible. Accessible staterooms can be requested with a  Guest Special Needs Form .

10: Scandinavian Cruise with Holland America

A Scandinavian cruise is commonly referred to as a  Northern Europe cruise  and visits locations such as Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. In addition to cruising with Royal Caribbean, you can also cruise with Holland America, which is known as one of the most accessible cruise lines, as we saw with cruising to Alaska. The same standard is upheld with cruising to Scandinavia.  Holland America  offers 7 day, 10 day, 14 day, and 21 day cruises that explore the waterways of Sweden, Norway, and the Baltic sea. Ships available for these trips include Ship Nieuw Statendam and Ship Rotterdam.

Many of these excursions are taking water and motor tours of the surrounding areas, like driving through one of Norway’s longest tunnels, visiting farm villages, sampling local coffee and treats, and exploring the steep roads with hairpin turns. While these are exciting ways to explore the area, it can also make wheelchair accessibility difficult. The best way to approach these excursions is to speak with Holland America directly, as accessible vehicles, ramps, and other accommodations can be made in advance.

Holland America Line strives to provide any accommodations you may need during your stay and uses a  Special Requirements Information Form  to help provide the proper stateroom and any other adjustments a guest with disabilities or mobility limitations may need. It is suggested to plan ahead and to contact the cruise line well before your stay in order to answer questions about cruises for wheelchair users and to confirm your reservation.

As you can see, there are a variety of handicap cruises and disabled cruises available to consider for your next vacation. Most cruise lines are accommodating in terms of disabled cabins on cruise ships and exciting excursions.

Cruises are a great opportunity to travel for wheelchair users, those with mobility restrictions and disabled individuals. The all inclusiveness of a cruise makes it the perfect way to relax and enjoy without all the planning of a traditional vacation.

The Complete Guide to Wheelchair Friendly Cruises

The Complete Guide to Wheelchair Friendly Cruises from cruiseobsessed.com.

Everyone is entitled to enjoy their cruise vacation. After all, cruising is the best possible vacation there is . That’s why I’m a Special Needs Group Certified Accessible Travel Advocate. It means I do my very best to ensure my clients requiring wheelchairs or mobility scooters will have the vacations of their dreams.

The good news is, there are a lot of wheelchair friendly cruises out there. Which makes cruising an excellent choice for travelers with mobility issues.

So what are the features of a wheelchair friendly cruise? Let’s cover some highlights of what you should look for before you book.

A Note on Mobility Scooters

Onboard accessibility for wheelchair users, wheelchair accessible shore excursions, the best wheelchair friendly cruises, the not-so-wheelchair-friendly cruises, plan your cruise with an accessible travel advocate, wheelchair accessible staterooms.

When booking a wheelchair friendly cruise, the first thing you’ll want to evaluate is the accessibility of their staterooms.

According to Travel Weekly , all ships that sail in US waters are required to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) . That means every major cruise line with a US port offers wheelchair accessible staterooms onboard.

Some features of accessible staterooms include:

  • Wider doors to accommodate wheelchairs
  • Ramped thresholds to the bathroom and balcony
  • Roll-in showers with fold-down benches
  • Bathroom grab bars and raised toilet seats
  • Handheld showerheads and lowered sinks
  • Lowered closet rods and lowered safes
  • Ample turning radius

Generally speaking, newer and bigger ships will have more accessible cabins than those that are older and smaller. Regardless of ship size, though, accessible staterooms are limited and held specifically for guests with disabilities. Many cruise lines will ask guests to fill out Special Needs Forms upon making their accessible stateroom reservation to make specific arrangements for accommodation.

A photo of a wheelchair accessible bathroom on a Celebrity Cruise ship.

If you use a mobility scooter for long distances, but don’t require a wheelchair accessible stateroom, you also have the option to book a standard cabin. Scooters must be stored inside the stateroom, though, so it will have to fit through the door. If yours is wider than the minimum of 23″, then you can rent a scooter at a reasonable price from third-party vendors. When you board, it’ll be waiting for you in your stateroom.

But of course, you don’t plan to spend your entire vacation in your stateroom. That’s why it’s important that the rest of the ship be accessible, too.

Here are just a few of the features of wheelchair friendly cruise ships:

  • Wide corridors
  • Automatic doors
  • Gradual inclines
  • Ramps and elevators
  • Accessible public restrooms
  • Pool and hot tub lifts
  • Lowered tables and counters in shops, casinos, and guest services desks
  • Preferred seating at theaters and shows

In addition to ship design, cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises will provide additional boarding and departure assistance at the piers, and can arrange for accessible transportation to and from the airport.

Accessible shore excursions are widely available throughout the United States, Caribbean, Baltic, and Mediterranean in ports where there is a dock. You can board the wheelchair accessible White Pass Scenic Railway in Alaska, visit the ruins of ancient Pompeii in a wheelchair accessible van, or simply rent a beach wheelchair to soak up the sun.

best wheelchair friendly cruises

Unfortunately, ports that require a tender aren’t wheelchair accessible. (A tender is a smaller boat that transfers passengers from the cruise ship to the shore.) Guests who can take a few steps are able to board tenders and bring a collapsible wheelchair, or even a lightweight folding mobility scooter, for getting around on land. Others may wish to find itineraries that exclusively serve docked ports – or you could stay on board and enjoy the uncrowded ship. (That’s what I did on my last cruise. While everyone else tendered in Cabo, I laid by the pool and relaxed in peace.)

The Best (and Worst) Wheelchair Accessible Cruises

In my opinion, Celebrity Cruises is a standout for accessible cruising . In 2022, they won Travel Weekly’s Gold Magellan Award for Accessibility Inclusivity, and they pride themselves on providing an excellent cruising experience for everyone.

For families looking for the best wheelchair accessible cruise ship, I’d recommend Royal Caribbean. Their private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , is largely accessible, with complimentary beach access wheelchairs, ramps, pool lifts, and lower counters at the bar

Many river cruises that operate outside the United States aren’t truly wheelchair accessible. Most companies allow only collapsible wheelchairs, and require some degree of mobility to get on and off the ship – especially in an emergency.

Additionally, it’s hard to find a wheelchair friendly expedition cruise, like those to Antarctica and the Galapagos. These itineraries often rely on the use of Zodiacs, which are small inflatable boats that can’t accommodate wheelchairs.

Novel World Travel is a Special Needs Group Certified Accessible Travel Advocate.

Don’t be intimidated by cruising with a wheelchair. With me as your Accessible Travel Advocate, I’ll help arrange for accessible stateroom reservations, rental and delivery of wheelchairs or scooters, coordination of accessible shore excursions, and so much more.

Send me a message to start planning your next cruise . Together, we’ll make sure you have the accessible travel experience you desire – and deserve.

5. Carnival Cruises

Whether young or old, Carnival ensures everyone is treated to an unforgettable voyage.

Inclusive Stateroom Design

Like its competitors, Carnival offers accessible staterooms across its fleet. Yet, two ships shine the brightest in this regard: The Carnival Horizon with 65 accessible staterooms and the Carnival Panorama boasting 75 accessible rooms.

These rooms come packed with features such as ample turning space, accessible pathways, and specially designed bathrooms with grab bars and shower seats.

Dedication to Continual Improvement

Although newer ships are typically better designed for accessibility, Carnival does not limit its efforts to only the latest vessels. The cruise line has retrofitted older ships with vital modifications like wheelchair-friendly elevators, which have tactile controls and audible signals for visually impaired guests.

Holistic Onboard Experience

The attention to accessibility doesn’t stop at staterooms. Carnival Cruises offers accessible routes across the ship, ensuring everyone can freely explore and engage in onboard activities.

Dining areas, whether casual spaces or upscale restaurants have accessible seating arrangements. Notably, specific ships such as the Horizon, Panorama, Radiance, Sunrise, Vista, and Mardi Gras are equipped with pool lifts, amplifying the fun and relaxation for those with mobility restrictions.

Assistance for Vision and Hearing Impaired

Beyond the tactile and audible signals in elevators, Carnival has integrated Braille signage and offers large-print menus. For those with hearing challenges, visual-tactile room kits are available, ensuring they’re always in the loop.

Tender Ports

While Carnival commits to maximum accessibility, some ports with tenders—smaller boats used when the main ship can’t directly access the port—might not be wheelchair-friendly. However, it’s important to note that even with such limitations, Carnival consistently strives to ensure an enriching experience at every port.

Tips for Choosing the Right Cruise for Disabled Passengers

Here are five crucial tips to help you select the perfect cruise for disabled passengers.

Research Accessibility Features

Each cruise line and ship can differ vastly in their accessibility features. When looking into potential cruises:

  • Ensure there are accessible cabins that meet your specific needs, such as roll-in showers, lowered counters, or visual and auditory aids.
  • Check for accessibility throughout the ship, including elevators, wide corridors, ramps, and modified seating in entertainment and dining areas.

Inquire About Onboard Medical Facilities

For many travelers with disabilities, the presence of medical facilities is a comforting reassurance:

  • Determine if the cruise ship has a medical center and what services it offers.
  • If you require specific medications, confirm storage or refrigeration capabilities onboard.

Check the Itinerary and Port Accessibility

While the ship itself might be equipped for accessibility, the real adventure begins at each port:

  • Research each stop on the itinerary to determine the accessibility of the port and nearby attractions.
  • Some ports might require tenders (small boats) to get to shore, which can pose challenges for those with mobility issues. Ensure your chosen cruise offers accessible tender options.

Read Reviews and Seek Recommendations

Hearing from others with similar needs can offer invaluable insights:

  • Browse travel forums and websites dedicated to accessible travel to read reviews from other disabled passengers.
  • Engage with online communities to seek recommendations or learn about potential challenges and how to overcome them.
  • Read reviews about appropriate travel gear that suits your specific needs, such as mobility aids or adaptive equipment, to ensure a comfortable journey.

Prioritize Communication with Cruise Lines

A responsive and informed cruise line can make a world of difference:

  • Before booking, reach out to customer service with a list of your needs and queries. Their willingness and capability to assist can be a good gauge of the overall experience you can expect.
  • After booking, reconfirm any special arrangements or accommodations you’ve requested to ensure they’re in place for your journey.

Selecting the right cruise for disabled passengers isn’t just about luxury and entertainment – it’s about safety, accessibility, and peace of mind. By following these tips and dedicating time to thorough research, you can set the course for an unforgettable voyage that meets and exceeds your needs.

Cruise Accessibility FAQs

Do cruises have rooms for disabled passengers.

Yes, most modern cruise ships offer specially designed cabins for disabled passengers. These accessible cabins are tailored to accommodate passengers with mobility challenges and may include features like wider doorways for wheelchair and scooter access, roll-in showers with grab bars, lowered sinks and countertops, visual and auditory aids, and more.

It’s always advisable to check with individual cruise lines and ships to understand the specific amenities they offer and to book these rooms well in advance, as they are limited in number and can fill up quickly.

Do Cruise Ships Have Mobility Scooters?

While most cruise ships themselves don’t provide mobility scooters for daily use, many offer the ability for passengers to rent them from approved third-party vendors who specialize in mobility aids. Passengers can arrange for a scooter rental in advance of their trip, and the scooter can be delivered directly to the ship for use during the voyage.

best wheelchair friendly cruises

Additionally, some cruise lines have scooters available for emergency or short-term use. If a passenger is considering bringing their own scooter, they should check with the cruise line regarding storage, charging facilities, and any other related policies.

Can You Rent a Wheelchair on Cruise Ships?

Yes, many cruise ships offer the option for passengers to rent wheelchairs either for the entire duration of the cruise or for specific times, such as embarkation and disembarkation. Some cruise lines provide these rentals for free, while others might charge a fee.

Additionally, passengers can often rent wheelchairs from approved third-party vendors, who will arrange for the wheelchair to be available upon the passenger’s arrival on the ship. If you’re considering renting a wheelchair, it’s essential to make arrangements in advance to ensure availability.

Will I Be Able to Get Off the Ship at Ports?

Yes, as a disabled passenger, you will generally be able to get off the ship at ports. Modern cruise ships and port facilities have made significant improvements in accessibility. However, there are a few considerations.

Port Accessibility

While many ports have direct dock access, allowing passengers to disembark via gangways with relative ease, others may require the use of tenders (smaller boats) to reach the shore. Depending on sea conditions and the specific tender being used, it might be challenging for individuals with certain disabilities to transfer safely.

an orange and white ender boat is pulled alongside a grey floating dock

Destination Topography

Some destinations might have hilly terrains, uneven surfaces, or lack wheelchair-friendly infrastructure. It’s a good idea to research each port in advance to understand potential challenges.

Ship Assistance

Some cruise lines offer assistance during embarkation and disembarkation for disabled passengers. If you believe you’ll need help, notify the cruise line in advance to ensure they can accommodate your needs.

In any case, it’s always recommended to communicate with the cruise line before your trip to discuss specific requirements and understand available services and potential limitations at each port of call.

Does the Cruise Line Offer Wheelchair Accessible Shore Excursions?

Most major cruise lines recognize the importance of inclusivity and have made efforts to offer wheelchair-accessible shore excursions. These excursions are designed keeping in mind the needs of passengers with mobility challenges.

They often include:

  • Accessible transportation: Buses or vans equipped with wheelchair lifts or ramps.
  • Tour destinations with paved paths or even surfaces.
  • Sites with wheelchair-accessible restrooms and facilities.

However, the availability and extent of accessible excursions can vary based on the cruise line, the specific ship, and the destinations on the itinerary. Some more remote or historic locations might have limited accessibility due to their natural terrain or older infrastructure.

Travel Tip: The US and Europe are destinations where the cruise line will most likely offer accessible excursions. However, the availability of accessible excursions in Europe can vary.

If you’re interested in participating in shore excursions, it’s vital to:

  • Check with the cruise line directly about available accessible excursions for your itinerary.
  • Book in advance, as these excursions can fill up quickly due to limited availability.
  • Clarify any specific requirements you might have to ensure the excursion meets your needs.

In all cases, the cruise line’s shore excursion team can provide detailed information on what to expect and help guide passengers to excursions that best match their accessibility needs.

Assessing accessibility features.

Additionally, check if the ship offers accessible excursions at ports of call to make the entire cruise experience inclusive.

Importance of Staff Training and Awareness

One key aspect that can enhance the cruise experience for wheelchair users is the staff’s training and awareness. A proactive and knowledgeable staff can significantly contribute to a smooth and enjoyable cruise for wheelchair users.

Accessible Shore Excursions

Another crucial aspect to consider is the availability of accessible shore excursions. Look for excursions that provide easy access to transportation, sights, and attractions to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience off the ship. Some cruise lines offer specially designed tours that accommodate wheelchair users, allowing you to explore each destination comfortably.

Special Services and Amenities

Lastly, pay attention to the special services and amenities provided by the cruise line for guests with mobility challenges. It’s vital to choose a cruise line that offers trained staff who can assist you with embarkation, disembarkation, and any other special requirements you may have during the voyage. Additionally, inquire about services like accessible transportation within the ship, priority seating in theaters and dining areas, and any other accommodations that can enhance your overall cruise experience. By selecting a cruise line that prioritizes accessibility and inclusivity, you can ensure a relaxing and memorable vacation tailored to your specific needs.

Planning Your Cruise Experience

Booking process for wheelchair users.

When booking a cruise as a wheelchair user, ensure you inform the cruise line of your specific needs. Request an accessible cabin with wider doors and roll-in showers to enhance your comfort during the journey. Check for amenities like grab bars, adjustable beds, and emergency call buttons to meet your requirements seamlessly.

Pre-Cruise Communication with Cruise Lines

Prior to your cruise, reach out to the cruise line to discuss your mobility concerns. Inquire about the accessibility of the ship, including ramps, elevators, and designated wheelchair spaces in public areas. Communicate your requirements for shore excursions to ensure they are wheelchair-friendly. Coordinate with the cruise line to arrange necessary assistance throughout your trip.

Packing Tips for a Hassle-Free Journey

Pack essential items such as medications, medical documents, and extra batteries for any medical devices. Include a travel-sized repair kit for your wheelchair in case of emergencies. Opt for comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for various activities onboard and during excursions. Consider bringing a travel power strip for recharging devices and making the most of limited outlets in the cabin. Remember to carry copies of your medical history and emergency contacts for added peace of mind.

The inclusive environment fosters a sense of freedom and relaxation, making for a memorable vacation experience.

Areas for Improvement

While many cruise ships offer excellent accessibility features, some areas may still pose challenges for wheelchair users. It’s essential to highlight the importance of clear pathways and adequate space for maneuvering throughout the ship. Ensuring that all areas, including dining venues and entertainment facilities, are easily accessible can enhance the overall cruise experience for wheelchair users.

Additionally, while accessible cabins are a standard offering on most cruise ships, it’s crucial to verify the availability of specific amenities like grab bars and adjustable beds. Clear communication with the cruise line regarding your needs and preferences can help address any potential concerns before embarking on your journey. By proactively discussing your requirements, you can ensure a seamless and enjoyable cruise experience tailored to your needs.

Our 5 Favorite Wheelchair Accessible Cruises

Wheelchair Accessible Cruises

Cruising is considered an excellent vacation idea for people who have mobility issues or use a wheelchair. You will find cruising to be more comfortable and convenient because of access to things like bathrooms with grab bars, wider doorways, and plenty of room to turn around.

Newer ships have better accessibility facilities compared to older ships that have less accessible facilities, such as narrower isles that make it hard for you to move around in your wheelchair. Although they have great amenities, there are a few things that you need to do to ensure that your cruise goes on smoothly.

  • Check to know whether the ports in your cruise are tethered or docked. You can do this by calling the cruise line or checking their website.
  • Book early. Although ships have a lot of rooms, there are less rooms that are wheelchair accessible. Cruises to some areas fill up fast, so the earlier you book, the better your chance of getting a wheelchair-accessible room.
  • Find out whether you can rent mobility equipment from the ship. Most cruise lines will have all the items you need ready for you in your stateroom. Call well in advance as they may have a limited number to rent out.
  • Inquire if the shore excursions are wheelchair accessible. You will probably have fewer options to choose from. However, companies in some destinations offer great wheelchair-accessible shore excursions.

Carnival’s Alaskan Cruise

Cruising to Alaska is one of the most popular cruises among major cruise lines, and Carnival is one of the best there is. It has three ships that leave from different ports; Los Angeles, Seattle, and San Francisco. It takes them a different number of days to get to Alaska.

They also tend to visit the same destinations, with Ketchikan , Icy Straight Point, and Skagway being the most popular wheelchair-accessible excursions. You’ll also have a front-row seat to stunning nature views of wildlife and mountains. The harbors along the way are beautiful.

On this cruise, you get to enjoy watching movies, cartoons, and events on an outdoor screen, enjoying the sunset in a hot tub, and pampering yourself in the spa.

When booking your cruise, you’ll be required to fill out a mobility questionnaire to ensure you get a room that suits your needs. Apart from wide doorways, turning space, no stairs, and bathrooms with shower seats and grab bars, pool lifts are in the newer vessels. With arrangements, you’ll be able to be picked up from the airport.

Wheelchair Accessible Cruises

Norwegian’s Hawaiian Cruise

Norwegian is quite famous when it comes to how it takes care of passengers with accessibility needs. They offer transport to and from the ports of call. When cruising to Hawaii with Norwegian , you’ll have the option of 7-day round trip cruises and 16-day cruises.

You’ll be aboard the Pride of America ship if you decide to go with the seven-day option. You can book this cruise at a suitable time for you, as it runs all year round. You get a chance to visit four Hawaiian islands starting from Honolulu , which is a major tourist attraction.

After Honolulu, the next stop is Kaluhui , a commercial shopping center where you can buy souvenirs. Prices here are cheaper than buying from the souvenir shop in the vessel. The next stop is Hilo , you finish off with Kona , which boasts many natural attractions like Kua Bay, Mauna Kea Summit, and Makalawena Beach.

The 16-day cruise, on the other hand, ends in Vancouver and you get to enjoy the islands on the way and the numerous activities. Norwegian vessels are friendly to people with mobility issues. They have staff, referred to as Special Assistance Coordinators, dedicated to assist with whatever you may need.

Wheelchair Accessible Cruises

Disney’s Caribbean Cruise

If you are looking to enjoy a family-oriented cruise to the Caribbean , Disney offers a great opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking scenery. With fun activities planned, such as Broadway-quality entertainment on the ship and port adventures off the ship, you get to enjoy the best of both worlds.

You can choose to depart from Miami, FL, Port Canaveral, FL, New Orleans, LA, and Galveston, TX if you are on the 4-night cruise aboard Disney wonder. For seven-night cruises, you board the Disney Fantasy, which has four ports of call in Miami, FL, Port Canaveral, FL, Galveston, TX, or San Juan, PR.

You get to explore Disney’s private island, which is wheelchair accessible. On the private island, you will find sand wheelchairs available. You’ll also find that all the amenities in your room suit your accessibility needs. They include:

  • Open bed frames that can be accessed from both sides
  • Roll-in showers
  • Low closet and towel bars

Disney has a limited number of wheelchairs that are used only during emergencies, embarking and disembarking. If for some reason you are unable to bring your wheelchair, get in touch with a third party to rent their wheelchair for the cruise.

Wheelchair Accessible Cruises

Royal Caribbean’s Bahamas Cruise

Royal Caribbean is known to have spacious ships that make it an easy choice for wheelchair users. The company offers some of the best wheelchair-accessible cruises. With this cruise, you can choose from a wide range of options for the number of days you want to cruise. Your port of call depends on how long you are cruising.

Royal Caribbean only has complimentary wheelchairs that you can use when embarking and disembarking. You can choose to rent a wheelchair from Special Needs at Sea or Scootaround to use during your cruise if you are unable to bring yours.

To ensure you reserve an appropriate room, fill out the special needs form available on their website at least 30 days before you are set to sail. You will be able to enjoy many activities, including casino games. The casino tables are lowered and there are automatic doors and pool lifts.

During your cruise, you will visit Nassau, a docked port. You will be able to get off and explore the beautiful beach, get some shopping done, and even visit historical landmarks. At the Nature Center in CocoCay, you’ll have a chance to bird-watch.

best wheelchair friendly cruises

Carnival’s Caribbean Cruise

Apart from the multiple ports of call available, you also get to choose whether you want to dock in the Southern, Eastern, or Western parts of the Caribbean . Longer trips, usually lasting up to 14 days, dock in the Southern Caribbean, while the short trips, usually 4 to 7 days, end up in the East or West Caribbean.

For the short trips, your point of call will either be Cozumel or Key West. The ships for this trip are Carnival Fantasy and Carnival Sensation. Stops for the longer cruises are different from those for short cruises. They also depend on the ship you are on. If you are looking to dock at a specific harbor, ensure you book the right ship.

For example, if you choose to go on a five-day cruise, departing from Port Canaveral and docking in the Eastern Caribbean, you will be in Grand Turk on the third day and in Amber Cove on the fourth day before heading back to Florida.

If you encounter any problem in booking a fully accessible room, you can get in touch with a special team that handles accessibility matters. They will answer all your questions and ensure you get an appropriate room.

Our goal is to make all our guests as comfortable as possible, both on and off the ship. Our cruise ships have spacious corridors to accommodate 180 degree turns for wheelchairs. Most decks are accessible through automatic doors, and all public rooms feature entrances with gradual inclines.

Assistive devices including mobility scooters must be stored and recharged in your stateroom so fire doors, corridors and elevator lobbies are kept clear for emergency evacuation. When parked throughout the ship, they must be parked out of the way to allow safe and easy access by other guests and crewmembers. Assistive devices should fit through a standard stateroom entry doorway which is at least 23 inches wide. We offer accessible staterooms which have wider doors which are at least 32 inches wide and may accommodate larger devices. If you have an assistive device larger than 32 inches wide, please contact our Access Department for assistance. Note: Crewmembers are not permitted to lift assistive devices.

6 tips for going on a cruise as a wheelchair user

Miami Beach, Government Cut, Tourists in Wheelchair watching Cruise Ship

Traveling in a wheelchair undoubtedly comes with its challenges, but almost any wheelchair user will probably agree that cruising comes with far fewer challenges than air travel and most other modes of transportation. On a cruise, you don't need to worry about finding an accessible taxi or calling in advance to check accessibility when going to dinner.

Instead, you can hop in an elevator and in less than five minutes, you'll be ready for dinner in a nice cruise ship restaurant . Life on board a cruise ship is easy for wheelchair users because it's like an entire city is right there on the ship. Whether you want to lounge by the pool and drink pina coladas all day, see a Broadway-style show or even gamble in the onboard casino, nearly anything is possible within the confines of a cruise ship.

While cruising is one of the easier ways to travel with a disability, wheelchair users should keep a few things in mind when considering a cruise vacation. If you're planning a cruise, here are six tips for cruising as a wheelchair user to help ensure you have an enjoyable — and accessible — cruise vacation.

Book as early as possible

best wheelchair friendly cruises

Some of the larger cruise ships can hold around 5,000 people. Royal Caribbean 's Icon of the Seas , currently the world's largest ship, carries 7,600 passengers. However, even with that much space, wheelchair-accessible cabins can be limited. Typically, a cruise ship only offers a few dozen accessible rooms, and they are often booked quickly. (MSC Cruises tends to provide more accessible cabins than other cruise lines. MSC Seaside offers 51 accessible cabins.)

If you're thinking about taking a cruise, it's incredibly important to do the proper research and reserve your accessible cabin as early as possible. Booking a year or more in advance is great, especially for Alaska cruises . Cruises to Alaska often sell out of accessible cabins in record time, so keep an eye out for on-sale dates if there's a specific cruise you'd like to book.

Choose a cruise line that works for you

best wheelchair friendly cruises

Generally, the bigger the ship, the more accessible it is. For example, cruise lines like Carnival , Royal Caribbean and Disney have at least a few thousand passengers on every cruise, so the ships are more likely to accommodate wheelchair users. Holland America and Celebrity Cruises cater to older travelers, so you can also expect good access on their ships. However, smaller ships (and especially river cruises ) are typically not wheelchair-friendly.

Newer ships are also more accessible than older vessels. If you see that a brand-new ship is coming out from one of the big cruise lines, you can almost guarantee that accessibility will be fantastic.

best wheelchair friendly cruises

To determine whether a ship is the right one for you, go to your chosen cruise line's website and pull up the deck plan of your desired ship. Accessible cabins will be indicated by a wheelchair symbol.

You can also do a Google search for "(cruise ship name) wheelchair access review" and read reviews from other wheelchair users. Nothing beats that firsthand perspective from a fellow wheelchair user.

Find out if ports of call are docked or tendered

best wheelchair friendly cruises

Rolling around a cruise ship as a wheelchair user is spectacular, but what about exploring the various ports of call? Visiting various destinations on a single itinerary is one of the big advantages of a cruise vacation.

Wheelchair users should choose cruise itineraries where ships dock at the ports of call. Once the ship is tied up to the pier, wheelchair users can simply roll down a ramp to disembark the ship.

The alternative is that the ship anchors offshore and uses smaller, typically inaccessible, boats called tenders to take passengers ashore. It's difficult, and sometimes impossible, for wheelchair users to board these boats and transfer to shore.

You can find out if a port is docked or tendered by viewing the itinerary online or calling the cruise line.

Rent mobility equipment

best wheelchair friendly cruises

For many wheelchair users, one of the most difficult parts of traveling is taking along medical and mobility equipment. As someone who travels with a motorized wheelchair, a shower/commode wheelchair, a patient lift, wheelchair chargers and other medical equipment, I know firsthand how challenging it is to haul everything around once you reach a destination.

To make the process easier, companies such as Special Needs at Sea and Scootaround will allow you to rent mobility equipment that will be waiting in your cabin when you board the ship. Cruise travelers can rent wheelchairs, hospital beds, patient lifts, oxygen concentrators and more.

Reserve shore excursions with accessibility-focused companies

best wheelchair friendly cruises

If cruise lines are lacking in one department, it's the availability of wheelchair-accessible shore excursions. Some cruise lines do offer accessible shore excursions in certain destinations, but the choices can be limited.

Royal Caribbean offers accessible shore excursions in several port cities in the Caribbean, Europe and the Mediterranean. Passengers must fill out a request form prior to the cruise. Additionally, accessible shore excursions through Carnival Cruise Line are marked with a wheelchair icon. They include tours in Valletta, Malta; Glasgow, Scotland; Ketchikan, Alaska; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

If your particular cruise line doesn't provide a good selection of wheelchair-friendly excursions, consider booking a tour with an external company. In most ports of call, especially in the Caribbean and Europe, you can find local companies that have adapted transportation. It might take a bit of a Google search to find them, but they are out there.

For example, Sage Traveling offers wheelchair-friendly shore excursions in dozens of popular cruise destinations. Even better, the company is managed by a wheelchair user, so you can rest assured that accessibility will be top-notch.

Let an accessibility specialist plan your cruise

If researching and planning a wheelchair-friendly cruise seems daunting, let someone else do the work for you. Some travel companies specialize in accessible tours — including cruises.

Easy Access Travel specializes in both accessible cruise vacations and packaged land tours for travelers with physical limitations. The company has sailed with such lines as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess Cruises , Celebrity Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line .

In addition to offering accessible shore excursions, the above-mentioned Sage Traveling organizes wheelchair-friendly cruise vacations to the Caribbean, Europe and the Mediterranean.

Best Cruises for Wheelchair Users and the Disabled

Going on a cruise is easily the best way for wheelchair users to see the world! Cruise ships are becoming more accessible every year, and ports of call are increasingly aware of the need to cater to disabled visitors who both use wheelchairs and have money to invest in their economies. However, picking the right cruise ship AND itinerary can be a bit of a science. You want to find the best combination of wheelchair friendly ship, an itinerary where the ship will dock at ports where you can easily get off the ship, and ports of call with available wheelchair accessible tours – or at least accessible sidewalks and transportation. Here’s my list of the best cruises for wheelchair users and the disabled that include all three of these features.

1. Royal Caribbean 8-Night Scandinavia and Russia .  I went on this itinerary with Cory Lee of Curb Free with Cory Lee in August 2017, and it was fantastic! The Jewel of the Seas departs from Copenhagen (Denmark) and docks in Stockholm (Sweden), Tallinn (Estonia), St. Petersburg (Russia), and Helsinki (Finland). The ship is very wheelchair friendly, with large accessible staterooms, no-threshold balconies, pushbutton access to public toilets, and designated wheelchair spaces in the theater. Wheelchair accessible tours are available at each port of call, and while independent travel will be difficult to impossible in St. Petersburg (for both visa and logistical reasons), visitors can use accessible taxis, the Hop On-Hop Off bus, or public transportation at the other stops.

2. Princess 7-Day Alaska Inside Passage . I went on a slightly different version of this cruise in May 2016 , and it was honestly one of the best travel experiences of my life. This itinerary is available on four Princess ships – the Island, Star, Coral, and Golden – depending on the departure date. It’s a round-trip itinerary out of VERY wheelchair accessible Vancouver (which is worth an extra day’s stay pre- and post-cruise) and stops in Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay (cruising), and Ketchikan.

Technically Princess will tell you that you can dock or anchor at Juneau and Ketchikan. However, in my capacity as a travel agent, I learned directly from Cruise Lines Agency of Alaska that Princess has priority over other cruise lines when it comes to docking. So while a rare emergency may occur that requires Coast Guard vessels to take up precious docking space, chances are you’ll be able to roll off the ship at every port with Princess.

star princess alaska juneau era helicopters

3. Celebrity 12-Night Israel and Mediterranean . It’s true that Celebrity is geared more towards bigger spenders. However, there’s no doubt that the upper-tier cruise line keeps wheelchair users in mind when designing their ships. I went on a slightly different version of this cruise in November 2017, and everywhere I went on the ship (the Silhouette at the time), it felt like it was made just for me! The public spaces had more than ample room and designated spaces for wheelchair and scooter users – which is good, because there were a lot of us on that cruise.

The ship for this itinerary is the Infinity, which departs out of Rome (Italy) and ends in Athens (Greece). All ports of call are docked and include Naples (Italy), Catania (Sicily), Valetta (Malta), Rhodes (Greece), Ashdod/Jerusalem (Israel), Haifa (Israel), and Souda/Chania (Crete). Various tour operators offer wheelchair accessible shore excursions at every stop.

Using a mister is a great way to stay cool on hot port days. This mister also works as a portable shower and water bottle.  Lunatec Aquabot sport water bottle

4. Royal Caribbean 7-Night Western Mediterranean .  There are dozens of cruise itineraries that cover the western Caribbean, and most of them include the “biggies” in Spain, France, and Italy. However, most of them include at least one stop that requires tendering, so this particular cruise is a gem. It’s also on the Oasis of the Seas, which is one of Royal’s larger ships with a passenger capacity of over 6,000 people. It has a lift for two of its pools and plenty of designated wheelchair seating throughout the ship.

The Oasis departs for its round-trip itinerary from the very wheelchair accessible city of Barcelona, and its all-docked ports of call include Palma de Mallorca (Spain), Marseilles/Provence (France), La Spezia/Florence/Pisa (Italy), Rome (Italy), and Naples (Italy). I would highly recommend taking a few extra days to explore Barcelona with this itinerary.

You definitely want to keep your cash safe while you’re cruising! Here is the cross-body anti-theft pouch I use when I travel:  Pacsafe Slingsafe 75 GII Anti-Theft Sling Purse & Hip Pouch,

5. Carnival 7-Night Southern Caribbean (from San Juan) .  Many travelers are hesitant to make cruise plans either out of or through Puerto Rico for fear of damage from Hurricane Maria last fall. I can assure you that San Juan, as well as the vast majority of the Caribbean, is definitely open for business. This is a more economical itinerary on the Carnival Fascination, which is an older and mid-sized Fantasy-class ship, but it was given a huge overhaul in 2008 that made it shinier – and more accessible, although its pools are unfortunately still lacking lifts. It also got a makeover in mid-February 2018 that added more dining options.

Ports of call include St. Thomas (US Virgin Islands), Barbados , St. Lucia, St. Kitts , and St. Maarten, all of which have accessible tours available through outside vendors. Carnival is a family and budget-oriented cruise line, so this itinerary would be ideal for couples with children not looking to break the bank.

6. Norwegian 5-Day Pacific Coastal . This one-way cruise from Vancouver to Los Angeles is a nice option for US-based travelers who want to stay close to home, and those who don’t have the time to be away for a week or longer. This cruise also takes place on the NCL Joy, the line’s newest ship going into service in May 2019, with this itinerary occurring in early October. All NCL ships have pool lifts, and younger family members in particular will enjoy the multiple water slides and two-deck go-cart race track.

Ports of call include Victoria BC (Canada) and San Francisco, which means more great news for wheelchair users. Although Canada is not subject to US accessibility laws, it has its own wheelchair friendly laws that make Vancouver and Victoria nice options. San Francisco and Los Angeles are large cities, but they are subject to the ADA and have several choices for accessible tours and transportation.

best wheelchair friendly cruises

Sometimes your biggest obstacle is only one step. Here is a great lightweight ramp you can use at home and when you cruise in less accessible ports of call:  Drive Medical Single Fold Portable Wheelchair Scooter Ramp with Carry Handle and Travel Bag, 3 Feet Long, Gun Metal

7. Royal Caribbean Western Caribbean (from Miami) . I love this itinerary for a couple of reasons. First, it’s on the Symphony of the Seas, a cruise ship so new that the paint is probably still drying. That means it’s super wheelchair accessible (including  three pool lifts), and HUGE. It just happens to be the world’s largest cruise ship at the moment, so chances are you’re not going to run out of food to eat or things to do.

In addition to offering all-docked port stops at Costa Maya (Mexico), Cozumel (Mexico), and Coco Cay (Bahamas), it also stops in Roatán (Honduras), which isn’t a typical port of call for a Western Caribbean itinerary. During accessible shore excursions, you can experience things like rides on beach wheelchairs, animal interactions, and scenic drives. This cruise is also family friendly, and ideal for large groups.

best wheelchair friendly cruises

8. Princess 10-Day Eastern Caribbean Voyager (from Fort Lauderdale) . I went on this cruise in November 2018 as my graduation reward from the Princess Academy. I went alone in my Whill Model Ci mobility device,  which I thought would be a great test of the ship’s accessibility, as well as that of the ports and tours. I really loved this itinerary because the ship docks at all six ports of call, and we also had three full days at sea to enjoy activities on the ship.

The Crown Princess is a bit older, but was recently refurbished and is absolutely lovely to see. The food is excellent, and I had no trouble rolling around the entire ship. I had a very spacious ocean view accessible stateroom that was definitely adequate for my needs. It took a bit of research, but I was able to find an accessible shore excursion at every port of call, which included Antigua , Martinique , St. Kitts , St. Thomas , Barbados , and Grand Turk .

Hi, thank you for the great suggestions. I like looking for cruises that have overnight stays at ports. I always find one day is not long enough! Is there anyway to search for cruises that have this option?

Unfortunately, there is no quick and easy way to do this. You have to search each and every itinerary. There are some cruise lines that are more prone to longer stays at certain ports, like Celebrity, Cunard, and Holland America. However, you still have to search each cruise itinerary.

Regent Cruise Line Actively Discourages People with Disabilities

I have been a long time Regent cruiser and was concerned about the quality of service after the takeover by Norwegian. In October my wife and I took a 10-day cruise to Canada and then Bermuda. We found the staff as warm and friendly as in the past and the food was at least as good. The entertainment was moderate as I expect on a small ship, but the performers were enthusiastic. But…

My wife uses a mobility scooter and transport chair which we brought on the cruise. The access to the pool deck and specialty restaurants was made especially difficult. Scooters had to navigate the lip between the corridor and deck and they created an extra barricade with an inclined plane to ease the scooter across the lip. But the plane did not slope to the ground but started with a two-inch vertical rise. To negotiate this the scooter had to be perpendicular to the rise and moving relatively fast. The problem was the stairwell was close to the deck access and there was little room for maneuvering. It was worse leaving the deck since the fast-moving scooter was headed toward the stairwell. A tense experience, to say the least.

Leaving the ship in port was an adventure-in-itself. The gangway was set up in much the same way as the as access to the pool deck and disregards the needs of those who need mobility assistance. It took two crew members to move the scooter over the hump.

The ship stayed in Bermuda for two days, the longest on the cruise. But none of the excursions were available to the mobility impaired — even folding wheelchairs. This really did not matter since the gangway was steps rather than an incline. The crew offered to carry my wife and scooter down the steps, but we did not want to be singled out. Finally, the stress was too much and the scooter transmission was damaged. Half way through the cruise we filled out a questionnaire and we expressed these complaints. We were ignored.

The changes that would have solved these problems were simple and inexpensive and the failure to implement these changes shows indifference, at best.

Unfortunately, luxury cruise lines like Regent, SilverSea, Seabourn, etc. have totally eschewed wheelchair accessibility on their ships. I imagine they find some legal way to justify it, or feel that the expense isn’t worth losing what they think is a small market share. It’s a real shame because I know plenty of wheelchair users who would LOVE to go on an accessible luxury cruise!

There are a few wheelchair accessible taxis in Bermuda. When a cruise line does not care about accessibility they will have very few if any wheelchair accessible tours. The ferry is also accessible. (The bathroom is not)

[…] port. These are two words that a wheelchair user planning for or going on a cruise never wants to see. When a cruise ship docks at a port of call, wheelchair users can disembark […]

Booked a western Caribbean cruise, carnival freedom, for February 2019. Was so excited reading about all the beach excursions to take, unfortunately none were accessible to me as I need a scooter to get around. We recently went to south padre island to. and got an aqua chair from the fire department (free) to use while on the island. However I have been unable to find such on any of the port excretions from the cruise. Any suggestions?

I need info on “Everything “ to do with taking the trip, from flying to Florida to what cruise is best – can I get all that with you all?

I do not find any comments about thresholds on cruise ships. I just spent 7 days on the Coral Princess sailing from Whittier to Vancouver. I was in a manual wheelchair chair. While some thresholds were smooth, the majority caused extreme jarring to the wheelchair & its passenger (me). I even had to brace myself for fear of being tossed out of the chair when tempting to cross one of these kidney bangers.

For the cruises with non-US departures, what are your recommendations for flying oversees (or anywhere, really) with a very large power WC for someone with dense hemiplegia and severe expressive aphasia. Would be traveling with spouse who is a physical therapist

If you want to cruise from overseas, I think Barcelona would be your best bet.

That water bottle mister is awesome. I will be ordering one and giving you credit.

What ports of call and Cruise line do you recommend for wheelchair bound traveler in the Mediterranean? My husband and I will be celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary June 2022.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions and advice, this is very helpful. We would also take the opportunity to say ‘Thank you very much’ for your advice regarding a trip to Tanger. Going there in a few days with a child in wheelchair.

Recently we were on Holland America’s Noordam-absolutely the best accessible cabin ever. The ship and crew were so helpful and amazing. I would note that the New Zealand /Australia trip is not a good accessible cruise as the majority of ports are not accessible and shore excursions do not include wheelchair users.

Six of the Best

6 of the best accessible cruise lines.

accessible cruise lines

From adapted cabins to fully accessible public areas and excursions, cruise lines are successfully catering for the needs of guests with disabilities.

Princess cruises.

Princess has five different categories of ships, all of which are accessible for wheelchair users, but its Grand class has the largest number of staterooms catering for guests with disabilities. The 23 cabins provide full wheelchair-turning space, a roll-in shower equipped with grab bars and a fold-down bench seat, an easy-access closet and a writing desk with wheelchair access. Princess says that, though its reservations team can request that staff support guests, it advises wheelchair users to travel with someone who can assist them both on shore and at sea. For more information, visit the FAQ section of the website.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas has 46 accessible staterooms – the highest number in the cruise line’s fleet – all of which are located near lifts. The ship’s public areas are wide enough for wheelchairs to make a 180-degree turn, with ramps for ease of access and doors to outdoor areas that open automatically. The cruise line offers boarding and departure assistance on all ships, and there are two levels of assisted shore excursions; level one is for guests who are able to walk short distances, and level II is for passengers who travel with a non-collapsible wheelchair or scooter and are unable to walk short distances. Royal Caribbean’s dedicated web page contains more information.

P&O Cruises

While all of P&O Cruises’ ships are wheelchair-accessible, the cruise line’s newest ship, Britannia, has the largest number of wheelchair-friendly cabins, with 37 available. Cabins are all kitted out to accommodate the challenges that wheelchair users face. Accessibility to all public areas is high on P&O’s agenda, with level or ramped access in the majority of spaces, and a mobility assistance team available for embarkation and disembarkation. Most of the ports that Britannia visits have short ramped low-level gangways for ease of access, although a number have large tidal ranges, which can make access via short ramps difficult for wheelchair users. More information on services and facilities is available on P&O’s website (note: it is not possible to book a wheelchair-accessible cabin online).

Crystal Cruises

Luxury cruise line Crystal Cruises prides itself on the attention it gives to guests with disabilities. Both Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity have dedicated staterooms with extra-wide doors, wheelchair-accessible bathrooms and closets with low fitted hanging rods. Around the ship, there’s ramp access to most decks and public areas, although Crystal strongly advises that guests with disabilities travel with a companion in order to have access to all areas. As with all cruise lines, ports that require tenders are challenging for passengers in wheelchairs; however, on-board shore excursion staff are on hand to recommend which Crystal Adventures tours are best suited to guests with disabilities.

Celebrity Cruises

All ships in the Celebrity fleet are accessible to wheelchairs, and a number of cabins can accommodate wheelchair users. However, the line’s Solstice class vessels have the highest number of wheelchair-accessible staterooms, with 30 on board each of the five ships. Reasonable mobility assistance is available in public areas, including Braille signage on all of the Solstice-class ships for guests who are blind or have impaired vision. Teletypewriters, amplified telephones and closed-caption televisions are also available in all staterooms upon request. There is a wide selection of itineraries; however, a number of ports require a tender service to reach land, which makes visiting difficult for guests in wheelchairs. Those ports are listed on Celebrity’s website.

Carnival Cruise Line

The cruise line’s newest ship, Carnival Vista, set sail last year with 65 adapted cabins in three different categories catering for guests’ different mobility needs. The ship’s public areas have been designed with accessible lefts, tactile controls within reach of guests who use wheelchairs, and audible signals for guests who are blind or have limited vision. Accessible routes are available throughout Vista with signs posted to help guests to find these pathways. Wheelchair assistance is available at embarkation and disembarkation, though shore excursions are challenging where tenders are involved, owing to external elements such as weather and tidal conditions. For more information, visit Carnival’s dedicated web page, which also includes detailed information on shore excursions and medical assistance.
