Montenegro Tours & Travel

Montenegro Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Tiny Montenegro packs a punch of bright blue ocean, luxury dining and shopping, and history spanning back to the early 1000s - with eastern and western influences still prevalent today. It's the perfect destination for leisurely sunsets, history walks, sailing, and hiking.

Why Visit Montenegro on a Tour?

While Montenegro is growing in the tourism scene, much of this country is not well-known to travelers. Visiting Montenegro on a tour is a great way to see the main sites of the country from tour guides who know it best.

Montenegro also has a very rugged terrain and visiting Montenegro on a tour makes exploring all of the famous sites much easier.

Additionally, Montenegro is heaven for those looking to enjoy an active tour. Hikers and cyclists will love the mountainous regions of the country. There are tour companies that provide adventure itineraries for hikes and routes through the some of the most popular trails and mountains in Montenegro.

Montenegro Cities

Montenegro is just a little larger than the state of Connecticut with about 6x less the population. Much of the population lives in the major cities in the country. The three major cities visitors will likely visit each provide a look into Montenegro culture.

1. Podgorica

The capital city of Montenegro, Podgorica is one of the only cities in the country that doesn’t sit on the edge of a mountain. The city actually rests in the middle of a giant valley basin. The main airport into the country is in Podgorica and the city is seeing a growth in population and business with its own soccer team, skyscrapers, and cafe scene.

One of Montenegro’s two main coastal cities, Budva grew as an Eastern European and Russian vacation destination. Over the years this medieval city has grown around it’s lively restaurant scene and quaint old town to become one of the popular beach party cities in the region.

Kotor is one of the top Montenegro destinations. The small city sits at the base of a large mountain range and is famous for its medieval old town and fortress walls that weave their way up the mountain. Kotor is also a popular cruise destination as it sits at the end of the Bay of Kotor, like a southern version of the Norwegian fjords.

Top Tour Activities in Montenegro

One of the highlights of Montenegro tours is the landscape, which is why the best tour activities are focused around getting out and exploring the geography of Montenegro.

1. Fortress Walls of Kotor

Kotor’s most famous attraction are the walls of the medieval fortress. These miles of walls zigzag their way up the steep terrain of the mountains soaring above the city. You can climb these walls all the way up to the fortress tower where you can capture panoramic views of the bay. However, this climb is not for the faint of heart as most of the trek is stairs.

2. Old Town of Budva

A short drive through the mountains from Kotor, is the coastal city of Budva. Budva’s old, historic town sits on a peninsula in the Budva Bay. Inside these historic walls, you can visit tiny cafes or buy souvenirs to take home with you. Also in the old town are a few of the city’s most famous churches, Church Sv. Trojica and the Church of Sv. Ivan.

Montenegro has some of the most rugged terrain in all of Europe, which makes it the ideal place for hikers and adventure seekers. With the tallest peak, Bobotov Kuk coming in at over 8,200 feet, active travelers will enjoy the ideal adventurous holiday hiking through the stunning valleys and peaks of this country.

4. Kayaking

While Montenegro is famous for its mountains, its coastline and water also draws tourists to this small country. One of the top tour activities is to see these remarkable coastlines by kayaking. The Bay of Kotor and Budva have calm waters allowing you to enjoy a lazy afternoon taking in the stunning views while kayaking through the bay.

Montenegro Cuisine

Traditional Montenegro cuisine has strong Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences. Montenegro is in a strategic location in Europe and was a stronghold for Rome, Venice, the Byzantine Empire, and the Ottomans. Each of these empires left an impression on the Montenegro food culture.

Some of the traditional dishes influenced by these countries include stuffed peppers, lamb, meatballs, and sauerkraut.

Along the coast, Montenegro cuisine embraces its maritime past with seafood becoming the focal point for dishes. A few of the primary proteins include daily catches of shellfish, prawns, and shrimp.

Montenegro food is also heavily influenced by Italy. You won’t be able to walk throughout the old towns on the coast without seeing pizzerias and gelato shops everywhere.

Montenegro Churches

With so many influences, Montenegro has a strong religious culture. One of the top things to see in Montenegro are the historic churches throughout the cities, countryside, and even islands in Montenegro.

One of the most popular churches is St. Triphon’s Cathedral in Kotor. Built in 1166, this Roman Catholic cathedral has withstood a few earthquakes and is known for its Romanesque architecture and an ornate, silver altar screen.

One of the more modern churches can be seen in the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Podgorica. This cathedral was built in the 1990s and features an ornately, detailed exterior and large towers.

A unique church to visit in Kotor is the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks. This church and Benedictine Monastery was built on a manmade little island in the Bay of Kotor. The original church that was constructed there was Orthodox, but when the Venetians took over Kotor in the 1600s, a Catholic church was built to replace it.

The Church of St. John in Budva is a must see when visiting the old town. The church is the largest church in the city and some pieces of the church date back to the 9th century. Like many other churches in the region, the Church of St. John has been hit by earthquakes, but has stood the test of time.

Montenegro Souvenirs

Montenegro has some amazing and quirky souvenirs to take home as mementos of your trip. One of the top Montenegro souvenirs is food and drink, especially the rakija. Rakija, or fermented brandy, is a traditional drink in the Balkans and a memorable gift. But drink with care, most rakija is 40% ABV!

Another top souvenir in Montenegro is lavender. The Western Balkans are known for their lavender crop and you can find packets of the dried herb, bars of soap, or fresh lavender in souvenir stands and markets all across the country.

Montenegro is also known for its jewelry and colored lamps. Many of the independent shops in the old towns and villages sell silver jewelry and religious bracelets. You can also pick up hanging colored glass lamps harkening back to the days of Ottoman rule.

One of the most traditional souvenirs is a kapa, or a black and red cap. A kapa is a traditional circular cap worn by Montenegro men and is a symbol of the Serb Montenegro population of the country.

A quirky souvenir shop for any animal lover is the Cats of Kotor. The Cats of Kotor is a shop in the old town of Kotor selling paintings and artwork of all types of cats. Like many port cities, Kotor has a high population of cats roaming the streets and the store commemorates these local inhabitants with adorable artworks.

Places You'll See

Balkan discovery - croatia and montenegro’s highlights.

tourhub | Titan Travel | Balkan Discovery - Croatia and Montenegro’s Highlights | AUCRM | Route Map

Join your tour group at the hotel.

Korcula is a true gem of Dalmatia. Steeped in history, dense pine forests and glorious little towns, this island has it all. We’ll be based in Korcula Town, where the Adriatic Sea laps at the shore on three sides and sprawling groves of palms and evergreens border the other. You may feel as though you’ve awoken in a Croatian paradise this morning. We waste no time in getting to know the island on our morning tour, revealing some of the legends and the traditions of the area. We’ll get a real insight into what it’s like to live here, both past and present. First, we’ll enjoy a walking tour in old Korcula, taking in the Fraternities and the cathedral. We then continue to take in some the highlights of the island, including Barilo Ethno House in Blato. On the way back to Korcula Town, we make a stop in Lumbarda. This village sits prettily on soft sands edged by azure waters. We’ll enjoy some free time for a wander through the streets lined with stone buildings, or perhaps dip our toes in the inviting waters. We continue back to Korcula Town, where in the depths of the winding old town streets, we stop at Konoba tavern to taste some local sweets.

Korcula has a long history of producing fantastic-quality, organic goods and its honey and wine is no exception. Today we’ll toil through the idyllic southern countryside in search of such treasures. Watch on and learn about honey production during a demonstration at OPG Komparac; an outstanding local producer whose owner is passionate about his craft. Following the demonstration, enjoy a tasting and a wander around the herb garden. We’ll get a taste for the local life in more ways than one at our next stop. At a family-run winery, we’ll learn about the wine of the island - from vine to glass. We’ll also have a chance to taste three different varieties, including Grk; a dry white wine native to Lumbarda. The vine grows well here in particular, because of the dry, sandy soil in the area.

You might like to take the day to yourself and spend time exploring Korcula Town under your own steam. Or join our optional excursion to Mljet National Park on the forest-shrouded island of Mljet - one of the most enchanting and alluring of all the islands in the Adriatic. Boasting a beautiful, rugged coastline, ancient ruins, shady walking paths and zigzagging cycling tracks, it’s easy to see the island’s appeal. On your visit, you’ll see the two sparkling blue salt-water lakes named Veliko and Malo Jezero (Large and Small Lake). You’ll have the chance to enjoy a stroll through the lush pine woods or swim in the lovely saltwater lakes before you sail out to explore the islet in the middle of the lake.

Today is yours to spend at leisure. Perhaps pop down to enjoy the sea breeze on the pebbly beach. There’s also a small shuttle boat that runs from the hotel jetty to the old town. In and around Korcula, you’ll spot plenty of tributes to the island’s most famous resident, 14th-century traveller Marco Polo. This evening we enjoy a traditional Dalmatian dinner.

Today we wave goodbye Croatia and journey to Montenegro. We’ll stop on the way, though, to take in the beauty of UNESCO-listed Dubrovnik, a combination of beautiful limestone cliffs and a laid-back atmosphere. This terracotta-topped city never fails to enchant and one visit simply isn’t enough, but we’ll do our best on our sightseeing tour today. We’ll briefly take in some of the highlights - such as the famed city walls and its compact squares- before we cross the border into Montenegro. We arrive in Tivat, Montenegro this afternoon. Located in the central part of the Bay of Kotor, Tivat enjoys the Adriatic Sea at its shore to the west and the pine-cloaked Mount Vrmac crowning the city to the east. With sparkling super-yachts loafing in the marina and designer shops dotting its palm-lined promenade, Tivat has air of elegance and glamour - perhaps inspired by its Italian neighbours (the local pizza is delicious, too!). We’ll check into our hotel, located in the heart of Tivat and just a stone’s throw from the seashore, and enjoy a local snack on the terrace.

We journey to Budva today, one of the oldest settlements in the Balkans. En route, we’ll stop at a viewpoint to take in the fabled island of Sveti Stefan. Once the capital city of the Pastrovici community in the 15th century, the charming island is now home to a luxury resort - a one-time favourite of Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren and Princess Margaret. We continue to picturesque Budva. The terracotta-topped Old Town lies on a little island, linked to the mainland by a thin peninsula. 15th-century ramparts surround the island and some of the best beaches in Montenegro line its shores. This island is full of romantic lanes to explore - and you’ll have some free time to do just that.

Kotor is a fascinating and historic UNESCO-listed town perfectly placed in a spectacular bay. At every turn, there are beautiful mountain views up ahead. The town is a medieval labyrinth of churches, museums, squares dotted with alfresco eateries, and Venetian palaces. Our guide will bring the history of the place to life, before we take to the water to visit the little island of Gospa od Skrpjela (Our Lady of the Rocks) and the small town of Perast, where we uncover some fascinating monuments of Illyrian, Roman and early Christian periods.

Today is yours to spend as you please. You might like to take some time for relaxation on the beach outside the hotel. Or wander along the pretty promenade for shopping and ice cream. Alternatively, you could join our optional excursion to Lake Skadar - the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula, located on the border of Albania.

On our final day in Montenegro, we take the drive up to the mountain town of Cetinje, where we stop for some sightseeing before continuing to Njegusi. This village is known as the birthplace of Petrovic-Njegos; the most famous writer in Montenegro’s history. We’ll get a taste for the local life, too, with snacks and drinks in a traditional Montenegrin house.

Say goodbye to your tour group for your onward travel.

Recently returned from the great....

Recently returned from the great Indian rail journey. My wife and I could hardly believe the value for money. From pick ups from Durham to Heathrow and back,to the number of coach and train journeys , quality hotels, great choice of food throughout and our first night in Heathrow Hilton. What really made our trip a success was our guide, Prashant, who managed a party of twenty four very varied, sometimes a little unpredictable travellers with ease.Nothing was too much trouble for him and as a group we gelled and warmed to Prashant as he kept us safe, well informed and a little entertained by his mix of authority and humanity.Where do I begin with the tour itself ? India,a country of extremes.Poverty,wealth,order,chaos.Sometimes bleak, often breathtakingly beautiful. The people, the cities, art, architecture, flaura and fauna.Delhi,Jaipur, Amritsar,Agra, Ranthambore, Chandigarh and the icing on the cake that is Shimla. An absolute masterclass of man versus nature, the railway and buildings are an unbelievable feat, but wait until you see the dual carriageway being built on the mountainside.🤯I could go on for a very long time but I'll just post some photos. Thanks to Titan, thanks to the excellent Prashant and and a massive thanks to the other twenty two travellers who helped shape our holiday of a lifetime.🏁💜

I have booked the Icelandic...

Not merely a holiday, rather a memorable experience

I have used other travel operators; this was the 1st time of touring with Titan----Israel, The Holy Land, from being collected from home and returned at the end of the holiday this was an unforgettable experience; the Tour Manager, a PhD Archaeology made the whole tour so interesting, he enlightened us throughout each day from an historical, archeological and Biblical viewpoint, bringing each site we visited come to life, and went over and above his remit escorting us for evening trips around the local area; thanks also to our very patient driver who coped with the very busy traffic; our hotels were good, professional and pleasant staff and really good food; I would recommend Titan to anyone looking for a fascinating tour with excellent efficient service thank you Titan nor just for a holiday for a memorable experience

We had a 2 weeks...

We had a 2 weeks fantastic holiday arranged by Titan to Vietnam and Cambodia. Excellent, well organised Throughly enjoyed. Very good service by Vietnam Airlines, if you could afford book it in premium economy. We had a door to door service , picked up to airport from home and then dropped at home from airport, very convinient. Particular credit goes to our guide THI who is a caring, knolegeable, friendly down to earth man who made our trip a memorable one. I will not hesitate to book another holiday through Titan, their staff are friendly and helpful

We had a fantastic holiday...

We had a fantastic holiday in Mississippi. Right from our chauffeur driven car picking us up to the return journey, we had a great time. The first hotel The Gaylord was amazing, absolutely huge, first class. The second The Double tree in Memphis unfortunately wasn't, the hotel was tired and very basic, the only plus was where it is situated in the centre of town, we were only there two nights so it wasn't to bad. The American Queen Steam Boat was first class all the way, thoroughly enjoyed the seven nights sailing down the Mississippi. The last hotel the Sheraton New Orleans was very comfortable too. Our guide throughout our time away was Laura Tuttle. she was amazing, very knowledgeable, and helpful. We also had a coach driver Guil, who went over and beyond to give you the best time. Other coach guides included Jim,who was so funny, and also very knowledgeably. Very entertaining throughout. The entire itinerary itinerary was very well thought out, included a huge variety of visits to different Interesting locations. Highly recommend using Titan for all your holiday destinations.

THE GREAT INDIAN RAIL JOURNEY!!!!...

THE GREAT INDIAN RAIL JOURNEY!!!! (Dreadful) Avoid Titan and Saga at all costs. False descriptions of the tour and dreadful administration Returned to the UK last evening with a great sigh of relief after the worst holiday ever. 1. No block booking of airplane seats by Titan. (Husband and I sat apart on the long, overnight flight) 2. Unable to pre-book seats as Titan reference numbers did not coincide with anything. 3. Husband and I not sat together on any of the train journeys! In fact, on one occasion I was sat, alone on a sleeper carriage, a couple of carriages away from the rest of the group who were scattered over two or three carriages. Terrifying as a female to be sat alone in the midst of noisy locals!!!!! (Eventually the guide, Rahi, did come to rescue me and found a seat near the main group) 4. The guide, Rahi, would usually get off the coach and begin walking off without waiting for all the group to disembark the coach. (Spot the guide in the crowd!) 5. The guide, Rahi, refused to use any identifying prop such as a flag, hat, jacket or umbrella. Frightening to be in the manic crowds of Delhi and other crowded places to be unable to see the guide. 6. NO AUDIO HEADSET system on any excursion 7. The guide, Rahi, didn’t face the whole group, but stood sideways on and was unable to be heard by the majority. 8. OUTRAGEOUS behaviour by the guide when he enquired as to the whereabouts of my husband, whom I explained was in bed with an upset stomach and was feeling unwell. Rahi DID A REVERSE AIR PUNCH😳😳. This was in response to an earlier conversation when my husband had complained about our separate seating arrangements. TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL 9. When we arrived at Heathrow to find our aircraft seats were not allocated, we were advised to speak to our guide on arrival at Delhi. Rahi merely shrugged his shoulders and said he couldn’t do anything. 10. Tour pace incorrect - gruelling pace and only half a day relaxation due to the guide, Rahi, throwing in visits to shops and factories fie him to earn his commission as I head him tell another!!!!!!! 11. When off loaded the return flight due to illness, we were unable to get in contact with Titan/Saga. Left in Delhi without an hotel or flight!!! Found accommodation but didn’t remove shoes or clothes due to the poor standard. Final summary: Poor, disappointing, inefficient, incompetent, misleading, misrepresentations, are just a few words to describe.

Luxury VIP door to door...

Luxury VIP door to door travel! I don't think so....Titan sent a Toyota Prius uber to Stanstead for a return journey to Newport, S Wales. 4 adults plus luggage! the experience was anything but luxurious. Contacted Titan on the return journey and since return. They simply didn't seem interested and offered us a £300 travel discount off a future trip! After a lot of emails they converted it to a £300 cash refund. Give it a lot of thought before booking !

What are travellers saying about tourhub.

Excellent tour company with quick service and support. We loved that there is 100% refund if you had to change anything as long as your within certain time limits. A very professional company with a huge selection of different tours and several dates to choose from.

The staff at TourHub were very responsive to all of my questions and more! They provided me with all the information I needed to book our trip in a very short period of time. I am very impressed with this company and looking forward to our tour in 2025!

I have never been much of a tour person, but this company offers so many options! I love the fact that they consolidate many options so that you have all the adventures in one location.

Customer service was prompt in responding to any questions I had, and offering suggestions on tour options. Looking forward to our adventure in September!

I love that each destination and hotel accommodation is listed. Makes planning or even deciding to take the trip so much easier. Each time I emailed a question, I got a response right away. So far, I'm very impressed and looking forward to the trip that we booked for next year.

I just heard about tourhub. What a fantastic collection of holidays. I booked a holiday to Morocco and had a few questions, for which I received prompt and useful responses. Would highly recommend
