Speedrun Events

Journey got featured in several speedrun events throughout the years, which can be worth watching for entertainment.

They will be placed in reverse order (newest runs at the top).

Speedrun categories [ ]

A speedrun consists in finishing a game as fast as possible, but several categories exist to show different interesting gameplay.

Check the speedrun.com website to see the leaderboard and runner rankings in every categories. Visit the guide section of it if you're interested in speedrunning yourself !

A speedrun is considered " glitched " when it features Fancy Flying and other glitches (such as rushing through Out Of Bounds areas). "Glitchless" categories are closer to how the game is normally experienced, but in a more optimised way featuring some skips. Glitchless doesn't allow diving (done by aiming the camera down and moving forward): the basic Fancy Flying techniques were intended by the game developers , but for speedrun purposes it is considered glitched gameplay only. Glitched speedruns tend to be faster but harder to perform.

On top of being glitched or glitchless, the 3 main speedrun categories for Journey are " Any% ", " All Symbols ", and " Scarfless ":

• Any% means finishing the game as fast as possible without restrictions (the percentage of completion doesn't matter as long as you reach the end): it is the main speedrun category for many games, including Journey . You can collect as many glowing symbols as you wish.
• All Symbols means requiring to collect every glowing symbols in the game. There are 21 in total, but the very first one in Chapter Select level doesn't count as its scarf length value is added to the traveler's scarf by default upon teleporting to Chapter Select, when starting the speedrun.
• Scarfless speedruns are similar to Any% speedruns (and they can actually count as Any% too !), but they forbid collecting any symbol to extend the scarf length. You can still jump though.

All these speedrun categories can be performed with the white robe or the red robe as well ; offering a lot of different categories in total ! Red Robe speedruns are harder to optimize and are extremely difficult in glitched categories (explaining the few runners to attempt them at all). Scarf management becomes essential in red to be able to perform skips fast and avoid walking instead.

The speedrun can also be performed on every platforms : PS3, PS4, PS5, PC, and iOS, with light differences between them (loading times, camera speed, framerate...). This Any% leaderboard in the category extensions section from speedrun.com compares runs from every platforms together, although there might be loading time differences (a PC player with a good setup could gain over 10 seconds in total over a PS4 run, just in loading time).

Most of the time a speedrun timer starts at 1:20 min in Chapter Select, as it accounts for the time to watch the intro cutscene and gaining control of the character before being able to load CS level. This makes the speedrun practice easier, but oftentimes in marathon events the timer will start at 0:00 anyway, watching the intro cutscene to introduce the game better.

Speedrun marathons [ ]

Speedrun marathons are events often made to gather funds for charities through the spectator's donations. The speedrun is explained by the runner and/or their eventual couch commentary to introduce it to a wider audience. It is performed live in front of an audience for in-person events and/or streamed for online events.
