Tours Excursions Transportation:

Between Memorial Day and Columbus Day weekend, purchase an all-day RIPTA pass and enjoy discounted parking and admissions to area attractions. RIPTA trolleys leave the Save The Bay’s Hamilton Family Aquarium (23 America’s Cup Ave, Newport, R.I. 02840)every 20 minutes from 8 am to 8 pm, providing service to the mansions, Cliff Walk and more. Only 5$ per day/person.

The entire length of Cliffwalk from Bailey's Beach to Memorial Boulevard is approximately 3 1/2 miles. The area by Rough point is not paved, so wear good shoes and comfortable clothing, bring a jacket too.

The Jamestown Newport Ferry offers scenic transportation on lower Narragansett Bay as well as in NewportHarbor and provides easy access for visiting a variety of destinations where you will find many opportunities for sightseeing, historical tours, museum visits, shopping and dining.

A Newport, Rhode Island Day Trip or Newport Rhode Island Cruise Port Guide

Newport is a highlight of any trip to Rhode Island or New England. Cruise ships visit our city, often as part of fall New England foliage cruises. Newport is a colonial town on Aquidaneck Island in Narragansett Bay. There is plenty of history to explore, but also shopping, dining, and natural beauty. Read on for things to do in Newport in one day.

The History of Newport, Rhode Island

Newport was settled by a group of English settlers seeking religious freedom from the more stringent Boston in 1639. It quickly filled with talented Quaker tradespeople and became a thriving port city. Sadly, it was also part of the Triangle Trade.

In the 1920s, Newport became a summer escape for New York City’s elite. They built enormous mansions along the water, many of which can be toured today.

Jacqueline Kennedy’s family had a farm out by Fort Adams, so she married JFK, Jr. at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in downtown Newport and had her reception on the farm.

Where Do Cruise Ships Dock in Newport, Rhode Island

Since our harbor is shallow and our docks narrow, cruise ships anchor in Narragansett Bay in view of the Newport Bridge. Cruise passengers are then taken on tender ships to Perotti Park. This is an ideal place to start an exploration of Newport as it is right in downtown.

How to Get Around Newport, Rhode Island

Newport is a very walkable town, depending on what you want to do and your physical abilities. Most shopping and restaurants are on America’s Cup Boulevard and Thames Street, which have sidewalks and crosswalks, and are relatively flat.

If you visit Newport as a day trip on your New England explorations, you can drive around the town, although parking can be a bit tricky. There is a large paid parking lot at the Newport Transportation Center, where the free trolley leaves from.

We have Uber and a free trolley. To get to the free trolley, head left from Perotti Park onto America’s Cup Boulevard until you reach the transportation center right past the Marriott. You can pick up a route map there or check out this online map. Almost anything you want to do in Newport will be accessible from this bus line.

Things to Do in Newport, RI, in One Day

To help with your planning, I have included a distance from Perroti Park for most suggestions.

• Start your day with a vanilla lavender latte at Springline Coffee at the end of Bannister’s Wharf. There is also a Ben and Jerry’s and a Black Dog Store, a Nantucket Island clothing store, here. .3 miles.
• Meander along America’s Cup Avenue and Thames Street.
• Explore the US’ oldest synagogue, Touro Synagogue . Expect to spend a few hours exploring the synagogue and its museum, which discusses Newport’s religious tolerance.  .3 miles
• Visit the International Tennis Hall of Fame . You can see the grass tennis courts where the first US tennis tournament happened and explore the museum. Expect to spend an hour here. .8 miles
• Check out the cars in the Audrain Auto Museum also in the Historic Casino Building.
• Get some of the best views in Newport with lunch on the lawn at the Inn at Castle Hill. 4.3 miles
• While at Castle Hill, walk down the dirt road at the far end of the inn’s parking lot to see the still-active, granite Castle Hill Lighthouse.
• Visit one of the Newport Mansions . The most famous and grand is the Vanderbilt’s, The Breakers. You can buy multiple house tickets as well. The Marble House is also notable for its opulent interior decor.
• If you buy a mansion membership, you can have tea or lunch at the Chinese Tea House on the water behind the Marble House. The tea house was the site of women’s suffrage movement meetings.
• Meander down the Cliff Walk, the front yards of many of Newport’s Mansions. Read my whole post about walking Newport’s Cliff Walk. 1.3 miles
• Take a boat tour of Narragansett Bay , seeing a few of our lighthouses and islands.
• Explore Fort Adams , which has excellent views and walking and biking trails.
• Enjoy the birds, mammals, and ocean and river views at  Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge by Third Beach. 3.5 miles In this area, you will also find the Norman Bird Sanctuary and the small Purgatory Chasm.
• You can also rent a slingshot or bike. I have never used the company, but Scooter World rents.

Newport Cruise Port Guide

The small city of Newport, Rhode Island, depends heavily on New England cruise visitors from September through early November every year.

Large ships anchor in Newport Harbor and tender passengers to Perotti Park. Small ships dock at the South Alofsin Pier at Fort Adams State Park.

Newport, on the southernmost tip of Aquidneck Island, is three hours north of New York City and 90 minutes south of Boston Massachusetts. It has a population of about 24,000 people.

Attractions and Shore Excursions

Newport has a colonial history going back to its founding in 1639. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, it was a popular summer destination for America’s richest people, who built huge mansions that are major attractions today.

One of the most famous wealthy families, the Vanderbilts, built two of the largest and most popular mansions in the city. Marble House took four years to build and was modeled after the Petit Trianon at Versailles. The Breakers, modeled after 16th century palaces in Genoa and Turin, is on a 13-acre estate overlooking a spectacular view of the coastline. If built today, the total cost of this National Historic Register mansion would be $200 million.

Four-hour mansion tours from excursion operators may cost around $75 per person with discounts for children.

Cruise visitors can take the famous Cliff Walk of more than a mile along Newport’s beautiful coast. The trail is both a nature walk and a way of viewing or visiting some of the famous mansions. Visitors can take the walk on their own or pay for a guided tour that will cost around $75 per person with discounts for children.

Other Attractions

Other attractions include National Registered Historic Landmark District in the city itself. The district offers colonial architecture with such buildings as the Quaker Meeting House, White Horse Tavern, Brick Market Museum, Old Colony House and Touro Synagogue.

Another attraction on the National Registry of Historic Places is the restored and picturesque Rhode Island Lighthouse, originally built in 1870.

One of the quickest, least strenuous and least expensive excursions is a driving tour of Newport that will take less than two hours and cost about $50 per person. The tour may drive by Trinity Church, Redwood Library and the Gothic Church of Saint Mary’s where Jacqueline Bouvier married Senator John F. Kennedy. Other highlights include Ocean Drive and the mansions on Bellevue Avenue.

Fort Adams, which dates back to 1799, is now a tourist attraction and state park. It is four miles southwest of Perotti Park, where cruise passengers disembark from their tenders.

Average high temperatures reach into the low 80s Fahrenheit during summer and low 70s during the peak cruise month in September.

Daytime temperatures drop into the low 60s Fahrenheit in October and low 50s in November.

Rainfall averages a steady three to four inches a month throughout the cruise season.

The Breakers is a famous Newport mansion built in 1895 by Cornelius Vanderbilt II to be his summer home, and was designed by renowned architect Richard Morris Hunt with interior decoration done by Ogden Codman, Jr. and Jules Allard and Sons. We know – those names probably don’t mean too much to you, but they were a big deal back in the Gilded Age! The Breakers gets its name from its proximity to the coastline and that it’s so close you can see the waves breaking onshore from the mansion. The mansion was designed to reflect an Italian Renaissance villa – as well as to show off just how rich the Vanderbilt family was. The Breakers is a National Historic Landmark and is no longer a private residence; today it’s owned and operated by the Preservation Society of Newport County. This is good news for visitors who get to tour the property, which is open to visitor year-round, and take in its grandeur both inside and out.

Sit Where George Washington Sat at Trinity Church

America’s first president attended church here along with many other historic figures from America’s past. Trinity Church is still set up with benches located within enclosures, as each family had their own section in the past. President Washington’s was Pew 81. In addition to the unique layout of the pews, pay special attention to what’s in the center of the church: a three-tiered, wine glass shaped pulpit that is the only of its kind in America. Trinity Church is in remarkably good condition thanks to a restoration in the 1980s that gave it a needed facelift while still staying true to its original façade and details so it appears as it did in the 18th century. If you love American history, this church is not to be missed.

Visit the Stately Rough Point Mansion

Rough Point Mansion was built over the course of five years and was completed in 1892 during the Gilded Age of Newport. It was originally the home of Frederick William Vanderbilt and was last privately owned by Doris Duke before coming under the ownership of the Newport Restoration Foundation. Rough Point is known for its English Manorial style with a red sandstone and granite facade. It is open to the public who can tour it during a Newport cruise port of call.  

Opulence Galore at the Marble House

The Marble House is another one of the famous mansions in Newport from the Gilded Age. Commissioned by William Kissam Vanderbilt (brother of Cornelius Vanderbilt) in 1888, the Marble House represents the best that money could buy at that point in history and was designed by esteemed architect Richard Morris Hunt. The Vanderbilts wanted the house to be a reflection of 17th and 18th century French chateaus and when Marble House was debuted in 1892 after being hidden from public view during construction, it didn’t disappoint thanks to its marble exterior – which also no doubt helped the Marble House’s construction costs to be $11 million.

Gaze at a Historic Lighthouse on Rose Island

This picturesque Rose Island Lighthouse is located on Rose Island (hence the name), in the middle of Narragansett Bay. The island had been used as a defense base since the American Revolutionary War, and later became the site of Fort Hamilton Barracks. When shipping traffic increased within Narragansett Bay, Congress decided Rose Island needed a lighthouse. The lighthouse utilized the former circular bastion of Fort Hamilton and was built to be 35 feet tall with a wooden keeper’s dwelling and Fresnel lens in the lantern that displayed a red light. The first time it was lit was on January 20, 1870.

The Redwood Library was founded in 1747 and is the oldest community library in the United States that is still housed in its original building. Inside this historic building, you can find a book collection surpassing 160,000 volumes in addition to the Original Collection of 751 titles.

Hike in a Bird Sanctuary

Though technically located in Middletown, Norman Bird Sanctuary still may fall onto your Newport must-see list if you love nature and birds. Situated less than 15 minutes from Newport, Norman Bird Sanctuary is dedicated to preserving the land that was bequeathed to the sanctuary in 1949 after the death of heiress Mabel Norman Cerio for the protection of the many species of birds who make it their home. The Norman Bird Sanctuary covers 325 acres and visitors can hike the seven miles worth of trails around its premises and bird watch. Some of the birds you might see include herons, mallards, woodpeckers, chickadees, hawks, swans, and many more. You can also visit the onsite Barn Museum, which has information on the area’s ecosystem and natural history.

Pretend to Live the Yacht Life

A short distance outside of Newport in the town of Bristol, Rhode Island, is the Herreshoff Marine Museum. It is a popular place to go for maritime enthusiasts since it houses memorabilia relating to yachting, the America’s Cup sailing race, and the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, which was an acclaimed boat design company that built the largest ever America’s Cup boat as well as designed the first United States torpedo boats and an array of other engineering and design feats in the boating world.

Enjoy a pint or appetizer at White Horse Tavern, which is the oldest restaurant in Newport and dates back to 1673. For a quick lunch, the lobster roll is a famous food item in Newport that you can find at many of the casual restaurants and bars in town.

Culture & History of the Newport Cruise Port

Newport was founded in 1639 by a group of settlers who came to Rhode Island (Aquidneck Island at the time) to pursue religious beliefs that they weren’t allowed to practice in secular Boston. Livelihoods in Newport during the time were built off of trade and export businesses (mostly centered on candles, fish, furniture, rum, and silver) made profitable by the easy access to Newport harbor.

During the Revolutionary War, Newport became a hotbed for promoting independence and as a result, the British occupied the town from 1776 to 1779. Though they were eventually driven out and the colonists won the war, Newport had a long road to recovery from an economic standpoint. The trade route that once brought so much riches to the city was now bypassed thanks to the Industrial Revolution, which Newport wasn’t yet a part of. However, this gave Newport a more relaxed vibe, which was soon noticed by artists and intellectuals who helped turn Newport into a summer getaway destination.

It didn’t take long for those in the big city to become intrigued by what was going on in Newport, and Newport began to attract wealthy businessmen and their families who built summer homes in Newport for some rest and relaxation. The height of this was in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, before the Great Depression. The era was full of glitz, glamour and gross opulence and came to be known as the Gilded Age. Residents of Newport utilized the harbor once again, but this time for yachting and sport instead of trade and commerce.

The Gilded Age was mostly prominent due to political corruption and social and economic turmoil that eventually needed to be addressed. As new government requirements and restrictions were imposed, the excess wealth that made the Gilded Age possible started to vanish.

T he last half of the 20th century, however, saw a return of visitors sweeping down on the beautiful landscape of Newport to spend their summers. Tourism continues to be a big part of the city’s economy. A large part of the appeal is seeing so many historic structures all in one place, which can be credited to the number of preservation organizations that have fought to save many of these buildings over the past several decades. During a cruise to Newport, Rhode Island, You can experience for yourself what drew in the original settlers and upper-class society of Newport and which still entices people to this day.

Newport Port Facilities & Location

The cruise port of Newport is a tender port, which means cruise ships have to anchor off the shore and transfer passengers to the dock in a comfortable tender boat. The ride on the tender boat will take about 15 to 20 minutes and is a pretty boat ride; you can even see Rose Island Lighthouse along the way. We drop you off right by Perotti Park, which is located in the center of town, making it an easy walk to Thames Street.

You’ll get information in a day or two leading up to the Newport port of call on when your time to get off the ship will be, depending on when your shore excursion is departing or when your stateroom class is able to get off. Sometimes there will be a ticket you’ll need to get in advance to get off the ship and it’s first come, first serve (for those not doing a shore excursion) so make sure you listen to when that will be so you can pick up a ticket number right away.

Once you get off the tender boat in Newport, there are not many facilities in the pier, though there are restrooms and a Visitor Information Center located right next to it.

Transportation in Newport

Taxis aren’t often waiting right outside the Newport cruise port. Instead, walk downtown to find one more easily.

Trolley Service

The yellow line of the local trolley service will take you to many of the main things to see in Newport, including Cliff Walk and the Newport mansions along Bellevue Avenue.  

Shopping Near the Newport Cruise Port

If you want to do some shopping while in Newport cruise port, Thames Street is the place to do it. The street is 1.5 miles long and is full of historic buildings housing a variety of stores, restaurants and bars.

For a lot of shopping all in one place, head to Brick Market at the top of Thames Street. You’ll find 25 shops situated within a fabulous open-air market designed by the famous architect Peter Harrison.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

On a cruise to Newport, Rhode Island, you’ll want to have U.S. dollars on hand since that is the accepted currency in Newport (and the rest of Rhode Island). You’ll be able to find ATMs dispensing U.S. dollars in Newport’s downtown area.

In Newport, Rhode Island, the summers are warm and humid; the winters are very cold, snowy, and windy; and it is partly cloudy year round. Throughout the year, the temperature typically varies from 24°F to 79°F and is rarely below 11°F or above 86°F.

Where You Dock in Newport – Rhode Island

Larger ships anchor in the harbor of Narragansett Bay, Anchorage “D”, which is west of Goat Island. Passengers are tendered to Perrotti Park.  Smaller vessels dock at the South Alofsin Pier at Fort Adams State Park. 

It takes about 10 to 20 minutes to tender from the ship’s anchorage to the pier, depending on where your ship anchors.

Getting Around Newport – Rhode Island

Most of the attractions for tourists in Newport are within walking distance of the location that passengers are tendered to. There is a concentration of shops, restaurants and boutiques in Newport. Conde Nast Traveler named Newport the Best Walking City in the US. Newport has a lot of historic charm and architectural treasures, but the streets are made from cobblestone, so wear sturdy walking shoes.

Newport Harbor Shuttle

The harbor shuttle departs from Perrotti Park, where its ticket booth is located, every hour on the hour. It will make a circuit of Newport Harbor, stopping at Bowen’s Wharf, the Ann Street pier, International Yacht Restoration School, the Newport Marina, Fort Adams and Goat Island. This shuttle is a hop on and hop off transport, so you have the chance to stop and explore or get something to eat before going to your next destination. Click here for more information. 

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) operates both buses and trolley-buses.  Bus 67, The Yellow Line, goes along Bellevue Avenue to the Newport Mansions. Bus 63, the Purple Line, connects downtown Newport and Middletown. An all-day pass allows you to hop on and hop off when you wish.

Taxis are plentiful in Newport. You can hail one on the street or call ahead. All Newport taxis charge an initial rate before tacking on the metered fare and a fuel surcharge that is based on the distance traveled. The initial rate is usually a few dollars. Both Lyft and Uber operate in Newport.

Rental Cars

You can rent a car in Newport, but if you plan to stay in the city and sight see, it is not recommended. The streets in Newport are narrow and parking is a nightmare. You would spend more time finding a spot to park than you would actually seeing anything. 

If you do choose to rent a car, you will need to be 21 years or older, have a valid driver’s license and major credit card. Driving is on the right hand side of the road in the US.

Nautical themes run through Newport as do heavy sweaters and items to protect you from the elements.

Shops at Long Wharf

Located in the historic downtown, these shops are near the waterfront. They include many favorites like Sephora and the Gap. There is also a Panera bread located here.

Aardvark Antiques

Quite the store, you will find architectural antiques, monumental bronze and almost anything in between. This 30,000 square foot store has been in business since 1969. The one-of-a-kind items come from around the world, and they like to say that each piece has a story. If you find something you can’t live without but it won’t fit in your cruise ship cabin, they will ship domestically or internationally.

The glass art pieces at the shop reflect the sea and the colors of nature in New England.

Dining In Newport – Rhode Island

There are six states in the US that comprise a region called New England. Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Rhode Island. This area is famous for its clam chowder and the oysters that are harvested from local waters. Lobster rolls are a classic option when visiting as well as clam cakes. Some of the smaller businesses that dot the waterfront are only open during the summer season.

The Black Pearl

Try their award winning chowder inside the restaurant or out on their four-season patio. As you would expect, seafood is prevalent on the menu. You can order oysters on the half shell, black pearl mussels, tuna nachos, grilled swordfish or a 2lb lobster bake. They also offer BBQ ribs, black angus petit filet and chicken pot pie.

Scales & Shells

In business since 1987, Scales and Shells uses fresh seafood that comes from the dock to their door. They even know what boat their seafood came in on. Everything from their fish to calamari are cleaned and cut in their restaurant. You can get raw oysters, shrimp crab claws and shellfish. Various forms of lobster, shrimp, calamari, salmon tuna and scallop are available. If you prefer, there are pastas and many vegetarian sides.

Clarke Cooke House

The Clarke Cooke House has its share of accolades. Food & Wine magazine said it is “by far the most sophisticated restaurant in Newport…”  Travel & Leisure has said it is “one of the top 10 outdoor dining spots in America…” 

With oysters, littleneck clams, lobster and jumbo shrimp, there is no shortage of fresh seafood. You can also get native cod, grilled swordfish, over-roasted chicken, wood grilled filet mignon or New York sirloin steak. 

There are numerous salads, and appetizers like johnnycakes, crabcake, calamari, mussels and tuna ceviche. If that was not enough they have beers, martinis and a wine list. 

Brick Alley Pub

From comfort food to fresh seafood, the Brick Alley Pub offers great soup, fish and chips, chicken sandwiches and garlic mashed potatoes. Ahi tuna, clam chowder, lobster mac & cheese, and chicken piccata, along with a number of sandwiches, burgers and pizza. You should be able to find something you like on their extensive menu.

The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar

The Mooring Seafood restaurant has been in business over 35 years serving “top of the catch” seafood. They also have a raw bar, an award-winning wine list and vegetarian options.  They serve soups like clam chowder and scallop chowder. You can get salads to go with a lobster roll, blackened tuna sandwich, falafel wrap or a beef burger. Fish & chips, lemon sole, clam bucatini and seafood pasta are also on the menu.

Things To Do in Newport – Rhode Island

The sailing museum.

Brand new in 2022, the Sailing Museum opened in Newport in May. Celebrating Newport’s deep roots in the maritime world, as well as its connection to America’s Cup racing, the museum seeks to preserve the heritage of the sailing and to honor those who shaped sailing as a sport.  Housed in the historic Armory Building in Newport, the museum enables all ages to learn about sailing and to be inspired to be out on the water. Historic Fort Adams is a former US Army post. First established in 1799, the fort was a coastal fortification named after President John Adams. The fort offers 75 minute guided tours that give you an overview of the history, design and restoration of Fort Adams. You can also take the Fort Adams Bay Walk, which is a 2.5 mile loop around the perimeter of the fort that gives you spectacular views of Newport Harbor.

The Elms | Newport Mansions of the Gilded Age

Believe it or not, The Elms was just the summer home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York. Mr. Berwind made his money in the coal industry and he had this home designed after the mid-18th century French chateau d’Asnieres in Paris. Back in 1901, when the home was completed, it cost a staggering sum of $1.4 million. The Elms is featured in HBO’s “The Gilded Age” , being filmed in October of 2022. There are 48 rooms in The Elms, spread over 60,000 square feet with a grand ballroom that holds 400 people.

McCurdy Sailing

UCSC Earth and Marine Sciences Research Scientist Dan Orange is chief scientist, I’m a senior scientist and James Gibson, who received his undergraduate degree from UCSC Earth and Planetary Sciences in 2012, is also a senior scientist. Another scientific party member is Harold Tobin, PhD from UCSC, is joining the cruise remotely and supervising graduate student Maddy Lucas, who is on the ship and collecting some critical data for her thesis.” Dan Orange is known to many locals as “Dangerous Dan” on UCSC radio station KZSC-fm and has been co-hosting “The Bushwhacker’s Breakfast Club” on Friday mornings since 1989. Port Canaveral backtracks on plan for new cruise terminal over concerns from state, space sector

Facing threats from state officials that many millions of dollars in state government grants might dry up or be withdrawn, Port Canaveral commissioners on Wednesday voted to halt plans to build a new cruise terminal on the site of its current North Cargo Berth 8.

Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly and Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue earlier this month sent a letter to the five Canaveral Port Authority commissioners, claiming that the port's plan to turn the North Cargo Berth 8 site into a cruise terminal and cruise parking garage would negatively affect the space industry.

They said that's because of the effect it would have on the commercial space companies' current and planned future operations to recover and reuse launched rocket hardware like boosters and fairings.

"Growing cruise capacity is important," the letter read. "But it cannot be accomplished by shouldering out the longer-term benefits presented by the commercial space launch industry."

"We encourage you — the commissioners of the port — to immediately rescind your announced plans."

Port commissioners reverse course

Port commissioners capitulated, voting 4-1 to reverse their decision to build a cruise terminal/parking garage complex on the North Cargo Berth 8 site. Port Commissioner Kevin Markey voted against that move.

Commissioners did not discuss an alternative plan.

The port had originally planned to build its new cruise terminal on the port's south side, at the current site of Blue Points Marina. But, in May, Port Canaveral CEO John Murray said developing a new cruise terminal there has complications that would take extensive time to sort out, leading the commissioners to choose the north side site.

Murray said after Wednesday's Canaveral Port Authority meeting that the port would "take a hard look" at all its options, "and start all over again," including potentially finding ways to more efficiently use its existing cruise terminals.

"We're going to look at everything," other than making North Cargo Berth 8 a cruise terminal, Murray said. "It's part of doing business. We're OK with it."

Murray did not discuss any timeline for implementing a solution.

Murray said he wants to create a balance between its various business sectors ― cruise, cargo, space, recreation, marinas, restaurants and real estate — adding that "it's tough to keep everybody happy all the time, but we do our best."

State officials' funding threat

Had Port Canaveral not reversed course, the state officials said in their letter:

• "FDOT will commence an immediate review of all current investments in Port Canaveral, and repurpose all planned investments for transportation work program priorities at other seaports and spaceports."
• The Florida Department of Commerce will cease to fund or support funding for Port Canaveral projects; will rescind current funding allocated to Port Canaveral; and will "stringently review the port’s performance with and adherence to the terms and conditions of its (fiscal year) 2017-18 Florida Job Growth Grant Fund award, which was granted, in part, to support of the aerospace industry."
• Neither the Department of Commerce nor FDOT will certify Port Canaveral’s three most recent applications to the Florida Seaport Tourism Economic Development Council for projects related to the cruise industry.

Canaveral Port Authority Chair Micah Loyd said, with the reversal of the port's cruise terminal plan, "we will work with the state, and we will ask for things that we need here."

"So let's turn the lemons into lemonade," he told the other port commissioners.

Murray said the port's current cruise terminal facilities would have difficulty handling more ships, and that has resulted in the port turning away potential cruise business that it could have gotten in a few years.

"It's going to compromise some of our businesses," Murray said.

He said the similar lack of berth space for cruise line expansion at PortMiami and Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades means that cruise lines that might have expanded at Florida's ports instead will base their new ships in New York, California or Texas.

Once that cruise business leaves Florida, Murray said, "it's next-to-impossible to get back."

Murray noted that major cruise lines have many ships on order that are scheduled to enter service in the late-2020s and early-2030s — ships that might not have a cruise port to go to in Florida.

More than 82% of the port's operating revenue is derived from cruise ships and cruise passenger parking. Murray said only about 1% of the port's revenue comes from the space sector.

Port's 'most precious asset'

Murray said the waterfront is the port's "most precious asset."

Nevertheless, Murray said, the port wants to retain its good relationship with FDOT and the Department of Commerce, and that was a bigger issue than the potential loss of grants.

"There's obviously a concern, and we need to sort though that," Murray said, adding that he believes the port has a good relationship with the commercial space companies.

He said the space launch sector is an important industry for the state, and one that state officials don't want to lose to potential launch sites in Virginia, Texas or Alaska.

In a statement related to the latest developments at the port, Space Florida said: "Florida is fortunate that demand at the world’s busiest spaceport remains high now and for the foreseeable future. We look forward to continuing to work with local, state and federal partners and stakeholders on solutions that support the rapid growth of the space industry."

The number of recovered space components going through Port Canaveral is increasing with the increased cadence of launches. Murray said Port Canaveral's cargo facilities handled 54 recovered SpaceX boosters from Oct. 1, 2023, through July 31, 2024, up from 39 in the same period a year ago; and 128 SpaceX fairing, up from 82 in the same period a year ago.
