The European Tour's Order of Merit winner claims the Harry Vardon Trophy - a prize which was first handed out in 1937

Rory McIlroy poses with the Harry Vardon trophy in 2023

Golfers who ply their trade on the European Tour - or DP World Tour as it is currently known - compete every season to lift the Harry Vardon Trophy.

The prize - initially including the word 'Memorial' in its title - was first introduced in 1937 after six-time Open Championship winner and 1900 US Open champion Harry Vardon died.

Between 1937 and 1979, it was claimed by the Order of Merit champion based on a points system before switching to the highest amount of prize money earned between 1980 and 2012. From 2013 onwards, it reverted back to points.

Since 2009, the Harry Vardon trophy has predominantly been presented to the winner of the DP World Tour's Race To Dubai - with the season-long competition temporarily being titled the DP World Tour Rankings in 2022.

Colin Montgomerie has the most titles with eight, secured in the span of 12 years, and he is two ahead of Seve Ballesteros who claimed all of his between 1976 and 1991.

Reigning Race To Dubai winner Rory McIlroy has five total Harry Vardon Trophy triumphs ahead of England's Peter Oosterhuis, who has four. McIlroy is the favorite to add number six in 2024, however, and has publicly revealed his desire to reach nine crowns one day.

Four players - Lee Westwood, Sandy Lyle, Bernard Hunt, and Bobby Locke - each have four titles while 12 others, including Nick Faldo, Ernie Els, and Berhard Langer, won two.

The BMW PGA Championship field is headed by Rory McIlroy , Shane Lowry , Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick , as well as more of the world's best players.

The BMW PGA Championship is the 38th event of the year on the 2024 European Tour schedule .

The event is played at Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, England.

The field for the final two rounds is solidified after a cut was made after 36 holes to the top 65 and ties. Players who made the 36-hole cut are paid this week.

What else is on the line: Race to Dubai points, OWGR points, exemptions

Beyond money, there are important points, perks and benefits on the line for the field -- in particular, the tournament winner.

The winner gets approximately 34.4 Official World Golf Ranking points, with the points available based on field strength.

Winning comes with other big benefits, including a two-plus season exemption on the European Tour, as well berths into other key events.

BMW PGA Championship History

golf european tour winners

Founded in 1955 as the British PGA Championship, the tournament is the European Tour’s flagship event, and annually contested at the historic Wentworth Club – home of the European PGA Tour.

As a Rolex Series event, the tournament offers a hefty $9,00,000 purse with the winner receiving over $1.5 million in prize money along with 64 Official World Golf Ranking points. An invite to the 2025 U.S. Open, as well as the next three British Opens, is also awarded to the champion.

The host venue is the Wentworth Club’s West Course, an historic design first brought to life in 1926 by one of the game’s legendary architects, Harry Colt . Modernization efforts have been undertaken led by Ernie Els three times in the last dozen years.

Nick Faldo BMW PGA

No one has had more success at this event than Sir Nick Faldo , who claimed four titles over a 12-year stretch, highlighted by three victories in a four-year span (1978, 1980, and 1981).

Another great English player, Colin Montgomerie , has a singular claim of his own, as he’s the only player to have won this event three consecutive years, from 1998-2000.

Along the way, a slew of other golf greats have added British PGA titles to their resumes, including the legendary Arnold Palmer , three-time winners Peter Allis and Bernhard Langer , two-time champs Seve Ballesteros , Ian Woosnam , Luke Donald , and Tony Jacklin .

Ryan Fox Wins 2023 BMW PGA

Ryan Fox produced a final-round 67 at Wentworth to win the 2023 BMW PGA Championship by one stroke over Aaron Rai (68) and 2020 BMW PGA winner Tyrrell Hatton (66) and two clear of Jon Rahm (68).

The 36-year-old New Zealand native entered Sunday’s finale on 13 under, three off the pace of Ludvig Aberg (76). But after a triple bogey-7 on the third hole, Fox found himself six shots back.

He would go bogey-free the rest of the way while making eight birdies, highlighted by an up-and-down gain on the final hole to win by one stroke on 18 under.

The win was Fox’s first Rolex Series title, and fourth career European Tour victory.

Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka among 14 LIV Golf stars making Tour returns alongside Rory McIlroy

A total of 14 LIV Golf stars are set to make their return to the DP World Tour in October, having been included on the entry list for next month's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

  • 19:01, 19 Sep 2024

A total of 14 LIV Golf stars are set to return to the DP World Tour in October , as they have been included on the entry list for next month's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The Pro-Am event, a staple on the DP World Tour schedule, has once again attracted a strong field. Big names like Rory McIlroy , Shane Lowry, Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick will all be teeing off at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns Golf Links.

They will be joined by several of their LIV rivals . Some are taking advantage of their DP World Tour exemption status, while others have received tournament invites to compete across some of Scotland's most prestigious courses.

LIV Golf stars allowed to compete in Ryder Cup as PGA of America explains decision

PGA Tour star issues blunt response to Rory McIlroy's comments on LIV Golf merger

Leading the returning LIV stars is former world No. 1 Jon Rahm. His future on the DP World Tour has been a hot topic in recent months. The Spaniard needs to play in three more events on the European setup by the end of the year to remain a member and thus eligible for the Ryder Cup.

After being issued fines and suspensions for competing in 'conflicting' LIV events by DP World Tour bosses, there were doubts about whether the Legion XIII captain would be able to fulfill his requirements and represent Team Europe next year. Fortunately, an appeal is set to allow him to compete in the Spanish Open, Andalucia Masters and the trip to the Dunhill Links.

Tyrrell Hatton is in a similar situation as he strives to meet the four-event requirement to maintain his Tour membership. Unlike Rahm, who has only started one event, Hatton has participated in two DP World Tour events this year and plans to compete in Spain and Scotland alongside his LIV captain.

Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka, another prominent figure from the Saudi-funded circuit, will also be playing in Scotland. The Smash GC captain committed to the DP World Tour event last week and expressed his enthusiasm for playing at his favourite golf course, the Old Course at St Andrews.

"I've been fortunate to play in several Dunhill Links, as well as two Open Championships at St Andrews over the years, and these trips are always highlights to my year," he said. "I love Links golf and St Andrews is my favourite course in the world. I could play there every day for the rest of my life and never get tired of it."

Koepka will also be joined by his Smash GC counterpart, and LIV's 2023 individual champion Talor Gooch. Three-time LIV winner Gooch was set to compete in the DP World Tour event last year, but was a late withdrawal from the tournament which was eventually won by Fitzpatrick following a delayed finish on the Monday.

Two former major champions have also found a spot in the lineup. Patrick Reed, the 2016 Masters champion, and Louis Oosthuizen, who won the Open at St Andrews in 2010, have both received invites.

LIV players competing at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship:

  • Brooks Koepka
  • Tyrrell Hatton
  • Talor Gooch
  • Patrick Reed
  • Louis Oosthuizen
  • Dean Burmester
  • Branden Grace
  • Hudson Swafford

BMW PGA Championship: The key holes and players to watch

By Edoardo Molinari

Ahead of the third Rolex Series event of the DP World Tour season, Edoardo Molinari identifies the key holes at Wentworth Club and the players to watch out for at the BMW PGA Championship .

Fleetwood Wentworth-1686436812

An ever-present event on the DP World Tour since its inception in 1972, the prestige of winning one of European golf's most historic titles continues to draw a high-calibre international field.

As the fourth event of the Back 9 on the 2024 schedule, with increased Race to Dubai Ranking points on offer, players are presented with a big opportunity to secure their playing rights for the 2025 campaign and also advance to the season-ending DP World Tour Play-Offs.

Since moving to its late summer slot in the schedule from spring in 2019, the Surrey-based course - which has undergone renovation over the last decade - has yielded low scoring.

Analysing how Ryan Fox claimed his first Rolex Series title in 2023 and some of the other key statistics over recent editions, here's a look at three key holes and players to watch at this year's tournament.

Looking back: Ryan Fox's victory in 2023

When analysing what enabled Fox to win his fourth DP World Tour title, a few areas oof his game deserve particular recognition.

He played aggressively off the tee, his approach play from 175 to 200 yards was outstanding and his putting inside 10 feet was also the best in the field.

The New Zealander used his strength to be on average 32 yards longer than the field for all his tee shots, thus enabling him to leave some shorter clubs into the greens.

He then proceeded to gain nearly three shots on the field between his approach play and putting, while he gained another full shot on the field with his chipping from the fairway.

English duo Tyrrell Hatton and Aaron Rai were close contenders, finishing tied second, but their putting was not to the same standards as Fox.

The Fortinet Threat key holes

At 473 yards, the par-four first is the toughest over the last few years. The scoring average is usually around 4.28, so an opening par is a great score.

Historically there have been only 5% of birdies against 31% of bogeys or worse.

It is a daunting opening tee shot as only 25% of players hit the fairway.

There are two options off the tee: hit a driver to carry the right bunker but the ball will most likely finish in the rough on the downslope or lay up next to the bunker with a fairway wood.

Historically, hitting driver is the best option, but it depends also on the pin position and how much rough there is on the right side over the bunker.

This is the most important tee shot of the round, as the difference between hitting or missing the fairway is more than 0.500 shots per round.

Historically there have been only 13% of birdies against 24% of bogeys or worse.

At 491 yards, it plays well over par with a scoring average of 4.14 and while 70% of players hit the fairway off the tee, only 53% of players hit the green on this hole.

The penalty for missing the fairway on this hole is massive and there isn’t any bail out so a great tee shot is required.

Measuring 523 yards, this is a great finishing hole as it has the biggest variability in scores over the West Course at Wentworth.

It plays just under par with a scoring average of 4.74 and historically there have been 43% of birdies against 15% bogeys or worse, which is a very high bogey rate for a par five.

Once again, the tee shot is important but the second shot is even more so, as the water hazard looms short and left of the green.

While the second shot is the most difficult approach shot of the whole course, it is worth highlighting the Sunday pin is the easiest one as you can bail out right of the green and have a reasonably easy up and down.

Players to watch

With a course that suits accuracy off the tee and great iron players, I've taken a look at players who have a statistically good chance at performing well this week.

The Favourites

Tommy Fleetwood

The Englishman has enjoyed a solid season on the PGA TOUR, making it all the way to the Tour Championship. His accuracy off the tee improved in 2024 compared to 2023 and his iron play has always been a trademark. He’s never won at Wentworth but this could be the right time for him to shine.

Billy Horschel

Clearly has the tools to succeed once again around the West Course. He found some form again in 2024 after a poor 2023 by his standards and he is coming to Wentworth with three top 10s in his last five events, including a tied second finish at The Open.

Rory McIlroy

He can’t be overlooked. Wentworth is not the ideal course for Rory’s game, especially off the tee, but he is the highest ranked player in the field and he hasn’t finished outside the top 10 in his last four appearances at the BMW PGA Championship.

Matteo Manassero

For a player of his ability, it is difficult to view him as an outsider but after a resurgent 2024 he could find success once again around the West Course. His approach play is very solid and his short game is second to none. He is a proven winner and a win this week would complete an incredible comeback and seal his PGA TOUR card for 2025.

Rikuya Hoshino

The Japanese has been one of the most consistent players on the DP World Tour this season. He is the second best iron player on the DP World Tour in 2024 and he is also very accurate off the tee. His game fits the West Course to perfection.

Laurie Canter

The Englishman has enjoyed a very successful season on the DP World Tour and his game is back to where it was a few years ago, when he was one of the most promising players in Europe. His driving is world class and should he find a good week on the greens he could be very dangerous.
