Jon Rahm secured a third DP World Tour Championship victory with a two-shot win in Dubai, as Rory McIlroy ended the season top of the DP World Tour rankings.

Rahm took a one-shot advantage into the final round and never left the top of the leaderboard during an entertaining final round at Jumeriah Golf Estates in Dubai, mixing six birdies with a lone bogey to end the week on 20 under.

The Spaniard's closest challenge came from Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren, who carded rounds of 66 and 67 respectively to share second spot, with McIlroy a further stroke back in fourth spot after a four-under 68.

McIlroy's finish ensured he retained his place at the top of the season-long DP World Tour rankings and secured him the Harry Vardon Trophy for a fourth time, with the world No 1 also becoming only the second player in history to win the PGA Tour's FedExCup and the DP World Tour order of merit in the same season.

Relentless Rahm wins again in Dubai

Rahm made the dream start when he birdied his opening three holes but failed to get up and down from the greenside bunker to save par at the fourth, as Noren followed successive birdies from the second by holing from 30 feet at the sixth to briefly get within one of the lead.

Noren bogeyed the par-five next, where Rahm rolled in from 20 feet to briefly go three ahead when Hatton followed four birdies in his first eight holes with a three-putt bogey at the ninth.

Rahm reached the turn with a two-shot cushion over Noren, who birdied the ninth and halved the advantage with a 25-foot birdie at the 12th, with the Spaniard regaining that margin by draining a 30-footer at the par-three 13th.

Hatton posted back-to-back birdies from the 13th to pull level with Noren and added another at the par-five last, setting the clubhouse target at 18 under, as Rahm moved a big step closer to victory with a six-foot birdie at the 15th.

Noren birdied his penultimate hole and recovered from finding water off the final tee to save par at the last, keeping him alongside Hatton in tied-second, as Rahm negotiated the closing holes to complete a record fifth Rolex Series title and become the first three-time winner of the DP World Tour's season finale.

How McIlroy ended European No 1

McIlroy came into the week top of the season-long standings and one of seven players with a mathematical chance of ending as European No 1, with the four-time major winner going into the final day with a narrow lead in the projected standings over US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick.

The Northern Irishman birdied his opening two holes and cancelled out a dropped shot at the next by making a 10-foot birdie at the fifth, before responding to a dropped shot at the ninth by starting his back nine with a birdie.

Back-to-back birdies from the 14th saw McIlroy close on Rahm at the top of the leaderboard, with the world No 1 closing a final-round 68 with three pars to top the DP World Tour standings for the first time since 2015.

Fitzpatrick needed a top-two finish to have a chance of leapfrogging McIlroy, although dropped four shots in a five-hole stretch around the turn on his way to a one-over 73 and a share of fifth place with compatriot Tommy Fleetwood.

New era as golf’s European Tour becomes DP World Tour

Published: 09 November 2021 Last updated: 13 May 2022

The European Tour will become the DP World Tour from 2022.

The European Tour will become the DP World Tour from 2022.

The European Tour will become the DP World Tour from the start of the 2022 season in a new era for golf.

The European Tour group and DP World today jointly announced a ground-breaking evolution to their long-term partnership, with DP World becoming the new title sponsor of the group’s main tour from the start of the 2022 season.

WORLD EXCLUSIVE:  Greg Norman on the Asian Tour and breakaway league rumours

The agreement heralds a new era in the history of the European Tour group, which, along with DP World, will celebrate its 50 th  anniversary in 2022, the first season of the newly named DP World Tour.

Today’s announcement represents a significant deal in terms of global sports partnerships, with DP World’s substantial commitment dedicated to three key areas: elevating the Tour in every way, growing the game of golf globally, and driving positive community impact.

New era (from left): Guy Kinnings, Deputy CEO European Tour group, Ryder Cup Director and Chief Commercial Officer, Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour group, David Williams, Chairman of the European Tour group, Yuvraj Narayan, Group Chief Financial, Strategy and Business Officer, DP World, Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director of DP World UAE, and Daniel van Otterdijk, Chief Communications Officer, DP World.

The new look DP World Tour will see total prize money break through the $200 million mark for the first time, with a new minimum prize fund of $2 million for all tournaments solely sanctioned by the DP World Tour.

In 2022, the DP World Tour will represent a truly global tour through an international schedule, that will feature a minimum of 47 tournaments in 27 different countries, including new tournaments in the UAE, Japan, South Africa and Belgium and an expanded Rolex Series comprising five events: the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic, the Genesis Scottish Open, the BMW PGA Championship and the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

RELATED: Everything you need to know about the LIV Golf Series

For the first time, it will also feature three tournaments co-sanctioned with the PGA TOUR – the aforementioned Genesis Scottish Open, as well as the Barbasol Championship and the Barracuda Championship taking place in the United States – as a result of the Strategic Alliance between male professional golf’s two leading Tours. The European Tour and DP World were both established in 1972 and have since developed into global enterprises with DP World, which is headquartered in Dubai, evolving into the leading provider of global smart end-to-end supply chain and logistics solutions.

DP World’s association with the European Tour spans more than a decade, first becoming a presenting partner of the European Tour’s Race to Dubai finale at Jumeirah Golf Estates in its inaugural year in 2009, before the Rolex Series event was renamed the DP World Tour Championship in 2012. It was in this year that DP World became the tournament’s title partner.

DP World then became an Official Partner of the European Tour in 2015, and they will now become the Official Title Partner of the Tour from the start of the 2022 season, which begins with the Joburg Open in South Africa, from November 22-25.

Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour group, said: “Today’s announcement is undoubtedly a momentous one in the proud history of our Tour. The launch of the DP World Tour in 2022, coinciding with both of our 50th anniversaries, will herald a new era in global golf, and crucially it will benefit everybody involved – all our players, caddies, fans and partners – as well as making an important contribution to wider society.

“The entire ecosystem of our Tour will be strengthened because of this hugely significant deal, and that was essential to us and to DP World, who have been an incredible supporter of our Tour as well as golf more widely, from grassroots through to the elite professional game.

“The DP World Tour is, therefore, a natural evolution of our decade-long partnership, and the presence of ‘World’ in our new title better reflects our global reach.”

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, said: “DP World has been a partner of the European Tour for over a decade. Our long-standing partnership has provided an excellent platform to engage with customers, prospects, and stakeholders, and build our brand. We have relished the opportunity to support the Tour in growing the game of golf and improving access to the sport at all levels. The key to this success has been and will continue to be the shared vision and values that underpin the partnership.

“We both have a global mindset, are committed to inclusivity, and invest in new technologies to stay competitive – attributes which today become the fundamental principles of the DP World Tour. As the leading provider of smart logistics solutions worldwide, we will use our people, assets, and connectivity to help grow the Tour further and change what’s possible in golf.”

Jay Monahan, Commissioner of the PGA TOUR and Board Member of the European Tour, added; “Thanks to the support of long-standing partner DP World, today’s announcement significantly elevates the European Tour on a global basis. We are excited for the continued growth and evolution of the European Tour, as well as the momentum this provides toward our Strategic Alliance. I’ve said before that our respective Tours are positioned to grow – together – over the next 10 years faster than we ever have at any point in our existence, and today’s announcement is another point of proof in those efforts.”

How will DP World’s partnership help to enhance the European Tour?

Biggest prize fund in European Tour history

Overall prize funds in 2022 will be more than $140 million for all tournaments outside the Majors and World Golf Championships, outstripping the previous all-time pre-pandemic high of $130 million in 2019.

Including the Majors and WGCs, the total prize fund on the 2022 DP World Tour will exceed $200 million, benefitting  all tournaments  and  all members  across  all categories .

New $2 million minimum tournament prize fund

For the first time, every tournament solely sanctioned by the DP World Tour will have a minimum prize fund of at least US$2 million, ensuring that all members benefit from this boosted investment.

A record $10 million prize fund for the 2022 DP World Tour Championship

This will make the season finale – the final Rolex Series tournament of 2022 – the first European Tour event in history outside the Majors and WGCs to feature an eight-figure prize fund.

2022 DP World Tour (European Tour) schedule: Tournaments, dates, purses and venues

ranking european tour 2022

The 2022 DP World Tour (European Tour) schedule has been announced, with a significant overhaul to the 48-event docket that golf fans have been accustomed to seeing in recent years.

The most significant changes to the schedule are related to the strategic alliance between DP World Tour and the European Tour that was announced in November 2021, changing the name of the tour and raising the minimum value of purses to $2 million.

European Tour co-sanctioned, purse-boosted events

The two tours are co-sanctioning three events on their schedules, including the European Tour's Scottish Open, which has a new sponsor in Genesis, as well the Barbasol Championship and Barracuda Championship on the DP World Tour (European Tour). The fields in all three events will feature a split of player availability between DP World Tour (European Tour) and European Tour pros, including spots for 50 European Tour players in the Barbasol and Barracuda Championships, which will be played opposite the Scottish Open and Irish Open.

The Genesis Scottish Open will remain part of the European Tour's Rolex Series. The Irish Open, which will not be co-sanctioned in 2022, will have a purse boosted by the DP World Tour (European Tour) to $6 million -- nearly double the amount offered this year.

There are a variety of new events on the schedule this year, including the Ras al Khaimah Championship in the UAE, the Pecanwood Classic and Steyn City Championship in South Africa, the Soudal Open in Belgium, two new events in Asia (including one in Japan) and the return of the Cyprus Open.

World Golf Championships halved

Since 2009, there have been four World Golf Championships events on the schedule. However, there are just two on the 2022 schedule: the WGC-HSBC Champions in China from Oct. 28-31 and the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Texas from March 23-27.

With the Memphis-based event becoming a playoff event, the other change is the WGC-Mexico Championship dropping out of the series. A Mexico Championship is listed on the schedule as a full-field event.

Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy pose with their trophies after the end of the DP World Tour Championship. Rahm claimed the tournament title while McIlroy won the season-long points race.

Andrew Redington

To say Jon Rahm loves playing the DP World Tour Championship on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates would be the understatement of understatements. The 28-year-old Spaniard had two wins and a T-4 showing in his three previous starts in the Old World circuit’s season finale, posting a scoring average of 67.66.

It was more of the same this week, as Rahm followed up an opening-round 70 with a 66-65-67 finish to take the tournament title for a third time, outpacing Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren by two shots. In the process, he lowered that career scoring average to 67.5.

It was Rahm’s ninth career DP World Tour victory and fifth win in the tour’s elevated Rolex Series events. With the triumph, Rahm claimed the $3 million first-place prize money payout (€2,891,271) from the overall purse of $10 million. He also saw his career earnings on the DP World Tour rise to €21,834,859.52, the 19th player in tour history to break the €20 million mark.

There was another winner on Sunday as well as Rory McIlroy, while finishing four strokes back of Rahm in solo fourth place, earned the DP World Tour’s Harry Vardon Trophy as the season-long points title winner . It’s the third time McIlroy has won the honor, but the first in a season in which he also won the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup title.

  • Biggest prize fund in European Tour history: Overall prize funds in 2022 will be more than US$140 million for all tournaments outside the Majors and World Golf Championships, outstripping the previous all-time pre-pandemic high of US$130 million in 2019. Including the Majors and WGCs, the total prize fund on the 2022 DP World Tour will exceed US$200 million, benefitting all tournaments and all members across all categories .
  • New US$2 million minimum tournament prize fund: For the first time, every tournament solely sanctioned by the DP World Tour will have a minimum prize fund of at least US$2 million, ensuring that all members benefit from this boosted investment.
  • A record US$10 million prize fund for the 2022 DP World Tour Championship : This will make the season finale – the final Rolex Series tournament of 2022 – the first European Tour event in history outside the Majors and WGCs to feature an eight-figure prize fund.
  • A full and comprehensive 12 month schedule: The DP World Tour’s International Schedule for 2022 was also unveiled today and can be accessed by clicking here . It features a minimum of 47 tournaments across 27 different countries from November 2021 to November 2022.

HELP TO GROW THE GAME GLOBALL Y

  • A significant investment in the Challenge Tour: To elevate prize funds and increase playing opportunities, as well as improving the overall infrastructure of events.
  • Establish the annual John Jacobs Bursary Award: Supporting the top five players on the Challenge Tour Rankings at the end of the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final supported by The R&A with their travel and expenses the following year on the DP World Tour.
  • A commitment to grassroots golf: Promoting golf at all levels in the countries we play in, including the UAE, where the DP World Tour will work closely with the current grassroots programme.

DRIVE POSITIVE COMMUNITY IMPACT

  • Expansion of the Tour’s ‘Golf for Good’ overarching CSR initiative : Focused on supporting good causes and the communities where the Tour plays; sustainability; diversity, inclusion and health benefits of golf.
  • Support of Charitable Initiatives and Disability Golf: Such as UNICEF’s COVAX Programme and EDGA European Tour.
  • Continued collaboration with the women’s game: including support of mixed events such as the ISPS Handa World Invitational and Scandinavian Mixed.

Amgen Irish Open: Five things to know

The DP World Tour Back 9 gathers pace as Rory McIlroy and a host of local stars tee it up on home soil at the Amgen Irish Open . Here are your five things to know.

Rory returns to a venue close to home

Almost a decade on from his foundation hosting the last edition of the Irish Open to be held at Royal County Down, Rory McIlroy is again the star name in his home county. Close to where he grew up in Holywood, the prestigious links venue was the scene of his final appearance as an amateur at the 2007 Walker Cup. Two years earlier, he made his debut at the island of Ireland’s national open, and he has been a regular return visitor, winning the title at The K Club in 2016. As is always the case around the world, the four-time Major winner will take with him huge crowds as he goes in search of an 18th DP World Tour title and second this season, following his record fourth triumph at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January. Having competed at the Tour Championship on the PGA TOUR earlier this month, this week’s homecoming will be the first of five upcoming starts for the 34-year-old before the end of the DP World Tour season – alongside the BMW PGA Championship, Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and the DP World Tour Championship.

MacIntyre targets piece of history

After dramatically winning his national open in July, Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre has the chance to realise something no other player has done before by also winning the Irish Open in the same season. Twice a winner this year worldwide, having also won the RBC Canadian Open, the 2023 Ryder Cup star should be brimming with confidence after finishing tied 17th on the FedExCup Standings in his rookie season on the PGA TOUR. Sitting 16th on the Official World Golf Ranking, the 28-year-old now turns his attention to enjoying a strong finish to the DP World Tour campaign and starting to amass Ryder Cup points as he looks to retain his spot in Team Europe for next year’s edition at Bethpage. This will be his third start at the Irish Open, having made the cut on both his previous appearances with a best finish of tied 13th in 2022.

Norrman looking for 2023 magic

Vincent Norrman burst on to the DP World Tour scene last season with a victory at the Barbasol Championship and followed it by lifting the trophy on a dramatic final day of this event. He began Sunday six shots off the lead but picked up six birdies in eight holes around the turn either side of a lengthy weather delay to surge into contention. A closing birdie handed him a flawless 65 and a 14-under-par total but he faced an anxious wait as a host of world-class stars made their own moves. "It means everything," he said. "Obviously such a cool event to play. The fans have been incredible. I've really had a fun week. Obviously if you win, you're doing something good. It's a world-class event, and honestly I can't believe it's happened." He has not made a weekend since the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed on home soil in June but will be hoping to take inspiration from his defence this week.

Irish stars set to shine

While McIlroy will prove a huge draw for the home fans, he will not be the only one taking a big gallery with him as a host of superstars from both sides of the Irish border tee it up this week. Open champion from 2019 Shane Lowry, who won the PGA TOUR's Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside McIlroy earlier this season and was his team-mate at the Olympic men's golf competition, is in the field alongside two fellow Amgen ambassadors. Two-time Major champion and 2021 Ryder Cup Captain Pádraig Harrington will be looking to use all his links prowess to win this title for a second time, while fellow Irishman Séamus Power hunts a first DP World Tour title. Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin will he hoping to bring his excellent form home with him and Ireland's Max Kennedy - currently seventh in the Global Amateur Pathway Rankings - aims to impress in just his second DP World Tour start.

A storied venue

Royal County Down is one of the most highly regarded golf courses in the world and has topped surveys and rankings as the very best layout on earth. It also has a rich history of hosting high-class events, having played host to the Amateur Championship, the Women's Amateur, the Curtis Cup, the Palmer Cup and that star-studded 2007 Walker Cup that saw future Major Champions McIlroy, Danny Willett, Dustin Johnson and Webb Simpson all play along with the likes of Horschel and Rickie Fowler. It has also previously hosted four Irish Opens but only one since the DP World Tour's inception in 1972, with Søren Kjeldsen lifting the trophy nine years ago.
