Table Top Racing World Tour review: Race tiny cars through giant environments on Xbox One

table top racing world tour

How do you make a racing game stand out from the crowd? Shrink it! Table Top Racing: World Tour from Playrise Digital is an arcade-style racer for Xbox One in which tiny cars race around tracks built on tables. With tons of events, sharp graphics, and online multiplayer, it's a much bigger game than the pint-sized cars doing the racing.

See on the Xbox Store

So many events

Table Top Racing World Tour Xbox One

Table Top Racing's primary mode is called Championships . It consists of three primary divisions, each limited to a specific type of car (Cult Classics, Street Racers, and Supercars). Each of these divisions offers four cups, all with multiple events per cup. The final event in each cup is a Finale in which you must score the best over the course of three races. The losers get thrown in a trash can, poor sods. All of these events have three stars to earn, adding replay value.

Table Top Racing World Tour Xbox One

A second, smaller campaign called Special Events consists of 56 races spread across the three car classes. These events are locked to one specific car each. Cars cost money (earned in any mode), so you'll need to spend time winning races in other modes before you can afford to buy everything needed to enter all of the Special Events.

Table Top Racing World Tour Xbox One

Table Top Racing features sixteen unlicensed cars to buy and drive. They all have stubby, stylized bodies resembling toys. Each car has four stats to upgrade and an overall stat limit. When playing through Championships mode, you might as well just buy the best car in each class. They have the highest stat caps. But you'll need to get them all eventually, if you want to complete Special Events mode.

Cars can also be equipped with one of seven tire types. These provide various effects such as enhanced drifting, extra money for weapon hits, and jumping. Each wheel type costs more than the one before it, so you'll probably want to unlock them in order as you progress through the game.

Multiplayer

Table Top Racing World Tour Xbox One Online Multiplayer lobby

Table Top Racing has no split-screen multiplayer, which is nigh inexcusable in an indie racing game. A game like this, featuring tiny, toy-like racers, really should support local multiplayer for the kids. Thankfully, this one at least has online multiplayer – not always a given with indie racers.

Multiplayer lobbies support up to eight players. A world map helpfully displays the approximate location of each player, so you can tell when someone from another country joins the game. The host can set a variety of options, such as track, route, laps, and more – a significant advantage over Riptide GP: Renegade 's option-free online multiplayer. Also an advantage, you earn money and XP across all modes.

Table Top Racing World Tour Xbox One

Players tend to drive dirty and bump into each other quite a lot, in my experience. It can be frustrating when someone knocks you off the table, setting you back several seconds. I wish car contact could be turned off, but perhaps that would go against the spirit of the game.

Achievements

Table Top Racing World Tour Xbox One

The Xbox One version of Table Top Racing features 38 Achievements worth a total of 1,000 Gamerscore. These include the standard completion goals such as winning every event, buying every car, and fully upgrading every car.

There are some fun hidden ones, like blocking a missile with an EMP. You'll have to win 20 online races, but that can thankfully be done with a friend in a private lobby. The most challenging Achievements involve finding every hidden coin on all 8 tracks.

Overall Impression

Table Top Racing World Tour Xbox One

Table Top Racing: World Tour is a fairly well-made racing game with a fun theme. Driving around on tracks filled with oversized real-world objects is inherently fun and different. The tracks also look fantastic, with lots of bright colors and details. Online multiplayer is strong and has an active player base at present, also a plus.

On the downside, this is yet another indie game that stretches a small number of tracks (eight) across way too many events. At least the developers added multiple routes for each track, which is more than Vector Unit did with Riptide GP: Renegade .

I also found the car handling to be less than perfect, even with fully upgraded cars. They slide around too much, making tight turns harder than they should be. You get used to the handling, but it still detracts a bit from the game's arcade-y nature.

  • Small cars, big tracks, plenty of charm
  • Great graphics with lots of color and detail
  • Robust online multiplayer mode
  • No split-screen multiplayer
  • Car handling could feel better.
  • Too many events for the number of tracks included here

Still, if the idea of racing pint-sized cars around on gigantic-looking tabletop tracks sounds like a good time, you'll probably get more than your money's worth from Table Top Racing. With a launch price of $14.99, it packs plenty of bang for the buck.

Table Top Racing World Tour Review

Neil Watton

Micro Machines has got a lot to answer. The brilliantly created table top racer from years gone by would have grabbed the attention of anyone who ever played it. You only have to look to the excitement that hit the world when it was confirmed that Codemasters were reigniting the classic for the modern day gamer, to understand the love many of us have for the franchise. But before that appears, there’s another table top fun racer to keep us busy, that of Table Top Racing World Tour. But can it jump on the back of the Micro Machines hype to deliver what we are craving? Or will it be left on the starting grid as Codemasters start to revive their mighty franchise engine?

Well, if you’re looking for something to tease your addictive nature, then Table Top Racing more than delivers.

Placing you in the hot seat of no less than 16 utterly cool, super miniaturised racing cars, Table Top Racing World Tour begs you to keep on playing until you’ve smashed and bashed your way round eight locations and across 32 different courses, all whilst competing for no less than 12 Championship trophies. In order to do so, you’ll need to race through 120 individual combat, pure racing, elimination, pursuit, time trial and hot lap events before grabbing top spot on all the podiums and being declared the ultimate table top racer.

The racing is hard and the racing is fast, at least once you’ve collected enough coins in order to upgrade your vehicle’s speed, acceleration, handling and armour stats, and there’s hardly a break in play as the events keep dropping into action, swiftly on the back of one another.

And once you’ve accomplished your podium goal, the action still doesn’t stop as 54 rather cleverly created special scenario events will have you heading back in for more, with limitations on car types and set objectives ensuring that your skills in all cars are completely on point. As you can probably tell, there is plenty of content included and you certainly won’t be finished with everything that the World Tour brings in just a couple of hours.

With a rather lovely visual style, bordering on the ‘toon’ and bringing some vibrant wonderful miniature worlds, and a banging soundtrack that drop 25 of the very best breakbeat tunes that Juice Recordings can muster, initial thoughts concerning this lovely little arcade racer are great.

But whilst the racing is fast, frenetic and full on, there is a little spark, that could see the game really shine, just missing. Granted, the addiction is there, and I’ve played very little else since first going hands on with World Tour as it just keeps dragging me in for more, but the very repetitive nature of running through the same tracks, and the same variations, over and over again, may take its toll on some. The very apparent rubber banding that is in place, and the hugely aggressive nature of the AI opponents may also annoy a few, especially when you find yourself deep into a multi-race championship, only for your dreams to be burnt in a flash. But then, without that rubber banding or with a slightly less enthusiastic computer model in place, it may just lose that addictive one more go attitude it brings.

Those small complaints are pretty much my only gripes with Table Top Racing though. I can’t for one moment complain about the visual or audio styles that Table Top brings as they are both delightful and hard hitting. Graphically, and whilst it isn’t going to blow you away, and even though the tracks themselves are a little hit and miss, the playful cartoony squashed style of the well imagined cars is delightful and does the job intended. The humorously named vehicles – Fauxrari, Zomg-A, Baguetti anyone? – come straight out of the Super Cars II Nigel Mainsail, Ayton Sendup and Crashhard Banger school of humour. For those moments alone, this should be utterly embraced.

Each of the vehicles has its own unique stats range too, and you’ll need to utilise most of the cars in order to fully complete everything thrown at you. For instance, you may think that a fully upgraded Baguetti in the Supercar class would suffice for most events and tracks, but its slightly less than perfect handling and poor drifting ability sees it struggle at times. Seeing as you need to place in the top three of every event in order to progress, or at least hit one of three set times or points totals in the events which rely on skill, you’ll quickly understand why each and every car is in place.

The tracks are pretty much what we want to see in a game of this type too. The well placed Yo Sushi branded circuits are pretty much front and centre, seeing you race round the restaurant tops with moving carousels in place and super secret shortcuts ready to be found. But we also find ourselves heading back to the 80s, racing round junk yards, chop-shops, across the beach and up on the winter slopes of a ski resort. Each locale comes with numerous track layouts too and even though the variation between them isn’t the biggest, they do allow for a bit of track recollection in order to see you succeed.

But Table Top Racing World Tour isn’t just about the cars, the tracks and the events. It’s got weapons too you know and they ensure it doesn’t ever become too stale. Missiles, acid pools, nitro boosts, freeze shots and more allow each race to be totally different from the next. You’ll have to pick up the weapon unlocks during each race, and sitting at the back of the pack may see you miss out as the AI grab first dibs, but it’s these weapons which really allow the fun to flow, especially in multiplayer.

Doubling up each weapon’s power can also be done by storing up unused weapons, and there is most definitely a tactical edge required should you wish to place on top of that podium because saving up weapons and knowing exactly when to hit them out is key.

Wheel weapons further build on the weaponry side of things and should you have obtained enough coins to unlock them, the likes of Bling wheels will double your earned credits, Boing rims allow you to jump, whilst further ones give you a little shielding or pacifism options. There’s even a full drifting set available should you wish to go down that route.

So, solo wise and it’s quite clear that there is plenty of content, all with a reasonably high level of quality included. But then we also have the multiplayer, something else that Table Top Racing works well with. As you would expect, the online multiplayer allows you to bring in everything that you know and love from the solo campaign and Special events, but with the pesky AI replaced by those of a more human nature. Whether that’s a good thing or not is open to debate, as if you thought the AI were a little robust and heartless in their nature, you ain’t seen nothing when compared to those in the online world.

It may still be early days in regards the population of racers in Table Top Racing across the Xbox Live service that powers it, but initial signs are good. No matter whether you decide to create your own private rooms for just friends, perhaps ramping up the number of laps and removing all powerups to instead focus on coin hunting, or if you decide to join a public room and let others dictate the pace of play, the online components within Table Top Racing are as smooth and precise as that found offline.

It’s a massive shame however that there is no option to play split screen against local mates, or even populate your races with AI to flesh things out a bit. The latter especially is very much needed as unless you manage to invite a number of friends to the party, there really is no fun with just racing around with a pretty empty track. But it is what it is and the online world will surely flock to a game that promises so much. Won’t it?

For Table Top Racing to really continue to shine further down the line though, then the developers at Playrise Digital will really need to keep on top of things going forward, if only to keep matters fresh. We’ve seen what can happen to games when games are loved and amended as things go forward – you need look no further than Rocket League to see how a simple premise can grow – and I’d love to see more tracks, more cars, more race types and even more variety in the weaponry in future months.

Whether that happens or not is anyone’s guess, but judging by the wording of the more than attainable achievements that are in place, I get the feeling the developers have plans already in place. Why else would they mention buying all the ‘original’ cars in the cheevo description?

Table Top Racing World Tour is already a hell of an addictive little racer, but its long term charm completely relies on the online community – something that past history proves is a tricky proposition. It’s currently got just enough variety and draw to keep you going back for more, but it won’t be long before you find yourself exhausting everything the single player brings and that is when you’ll start looking for something extra. Should the online side really take off though, then, well, this could be a table top racer to challenge the very best.

Codemasters will need to be on top form with their new Micro Machines offering in order to win the table top war this time round.

The question is now though do I get this now or wait until Micro Machines? Tough one based on this review

stylon (Steve)

Great review, will be picking definitely be picking this up over the weekend. I know I asked this on the preview article not long ago but I’d really like to know if this will support asynchronous multiplayer?

Basically there used to be a game on the PS3 called Motorstorm RC and it allowed you to challenge your friends to beat your laptimes and race against their ghost data. It was incredibly addictive, solely because of this feature.

Neil Watton

Just basic head-to-head multiplayer racing to be honest Steve. Hasn’t been overly busy so far (because the game hasn’t launched), but what I have managed to play has been good – should expect it to pick up massively online short term and just hope that continues in the weeks and months ahead. No ghosts available though.

Cheers Neil, I’ll still pick it up as it looks like a lot of fun. Shame about the lack of friend ghosts but maybe they’ll add that in the future…

Table Top Racing: World Tour Review

Current playstation plus offering and micro machines lookalike table top racing: world tour is the latest title from nick burcombe, a co-creator of playstation stalwart series wipeout . but does his involvement necessarily bode well for ttr .

My first impression of Table Top Racing: World Tour  was not great; the first thing I saw upon loading it up was a very large icon for a particular primarily UK-based sushi restaurant. “Wow. That’s a shame,” I mused. However, shortly after I began racing on the track, which was set on the worktop of one of their restaurants, I found myself eating my words (my words aren’t sushi though, so maybe the advert didn’t work). This level was good; enjoyable and well thought out. Sure, the numerous banners and brandings that you’d expect were present, but forgivable in this harsh modern world where smaller games or passion projects can’t release without sponsorship or DLC.

In this respect, TTR is actually pretty fair; you begin with enough coins ( TTR ‘s currency) to afford one of two vehicles from a set of four. These are the “Amateur” class, which are perfectly capable to begin with but, like all vehicles in TTR, they can be upgraded in various ways, which we will look at shortly. There are two further classes of  Street Racers and Supercars   which again hold four cars each, making a total of 12 cars in the game. Small differences in performance between them mean your choice will be made mostly on whichever you prefer the look of and each one can be given one of four pre-set paint jobs, for a price. This is unfortunate as the joy of a game like Micro Machines was in playing with different vehicle types, like a 4×4 or Formula 1 car. The difference between these classes is noticeable; once you’ve spent a while working through the Amateur class, the jump to Street Racers is appreciated, but you won’t be keen to drop back down as those cars now seem to run at a snail’s pace, so it’s best to win all three stars in each event as you go.

Table Top Racing 2 min

Once you’ve won a few early races, your coin balance will be looking pretty tasty, so naturally, you’re going to want to spend it. Head to your garage and each car you own has separate fields to upgrade speed, acceleration, handling or armour to defend from attacks. I tended to find that once I’d bought a car, I just waited until I could afford every upgrade all at once, as the incremental differences aren’t really noticeable. You can also purchase special wheel trims called “Wheel Weapons” which boost certain other stats like drift ability or reward you with more coins for winning races. But it’s not only the winning, but the taking part that counts, as coins are also rewarded for a podium finish or for other things like using weapons effectively against your competitors. All of these features feel like they could have been better, which unfortunately is the feel of this entire game.

The weapons and power-ups, collected by driving through floating blue bubbles, are not hugely imaginative either. Each bubble contains a random item; there’s a standard rocket launcher, oil slick and turbo boost as well as the slightly more exotic E.M.P bomb or the, to be fair, fairly amusing ice launcher which freezes any racer it hits for a brief moment, sending them skidding into the edge of the track – or if you’re really lucky, off of the table top entirely. The effects of these weapons are minor and only last for a very short time. A total of eight power-ups are available to you and once you progress, they can be boosted into super-weapons by collecting a second bubble – not that these super-weapons do much more than the regular ones, though. The lack of variety means races often feel the same, which isn’t helped by the small number of tracks available.

Each of the 20 “dynamic” circuits across the five different areas only provide an illusion of variety. The dynamic element simply adds a few variations which throw unexpected corners into level you thought you knew, but these small variations aren’t enough to prevent the tracks from feeling stale after a few races, especially as each event (Race, Combat Race, Time Trial etc.) is usually about half-a-dozen laps, lasting for about 30 seconds each. Though it should be said that the locations you play in do make the most of the miniature motors, asking you to dodge bread rolls at the marina or cans of spray paint outside the motor garage, even if these items (and the cars themselves) have a weird weightless feeling to them and so hitting them is pretty inconsequential.

This same issue plagues the music, too. Table Top Racing: World Tour ‘s   promotional material boasts of an “exclusive Breakbeat soundtrack by Wes Smith”. Not only do I not know what two of those things are, I also don’t much enjoy the result which is a basic, pulsing dance soundtrack that could be from any arcade racer. It’s certainly not Burnout 3: Takedown, as racing soundtracks go. In short, the music is inoffensive enough, but bland and certainly not remarkable.

Table Top Racing 3 min

There’s also a challenge mode which attempts to add some lifespan to the game, but I couldn’t tell the difference between it and regular races. Given that each race lasts maybe two minutes, it feels repetitive very quickly.

Credit where credit is due, the stylised versions of real cars do look impressive and details such as the shadows from the cars and spare wheels flapping around on the back of the RVs are nice. I also previously touched on the environments; they are full of things to look at from a new perspective, such as giant Rubik’s Cubes and plasma balls scattered about in the 80’s playroom, or nuts and bolts littering the road outside the garage. These little touches are appreciated, it’s just a shame that the events taking place here lack any energy.

Table Top Racing: World Tour  must have taken inspiration from classic Sega Mega Drive game Micro Machines and it hits a few of the same notes such as fun environments and cutesy cars and weapons to play with, but it lacks an essential frenetic pace and is stunted by the minimal number of vehicle or environment options available. As of now, there is a single DLC pack available priced at £5.79 ($8.49), which adds four new vehicles, a single new environment with four tracks and some special events, though I can’t help but feel that this early on, those extra items would have made an important difference to the game if they were included from the outset.

Table Top Racing: World Tour is generally enjoyable, offering occasional tense moments as you tussle with a competitor for the final lap, jostling for first place and trading blows as the finish line approaches, but these are much too few and far between. If you manage to make it into first place, that’s probably where you’ll stay, which presents little challenge and an overall lack of variety prevents this from being much more than a throwaway arcade racer. It also has  no local multiplayer , which seems bizarre as it would really boost the game’s lifespan but hopefully this will come in a future update. Until then, you may as well give it a try while it’s on PlayStation Plus, however,  Table Top Racing: World Tour  remains an entirely forgettable experience, full of caveats and missed opportunities.
