Tennis World Tour (Switch) Review

by Daan Koopman - June 29, 2018, 11:12 pm EDT Total comments: 1

Look up the box art. Yeah, I can sympathize with the tennis players on this one.

Let's not beat around the bush here. Tennis World Tour released earlier this month on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and got a really underwhelming reception. Now we could only hope that developer Breakpoint would address the game's most pressing issues for the Nintendo Switch version. The fact of the matter is they didn't. Not even close. Tennis World Tour has landed on the hybrid system, and that is the best thing I can honestly say. The sports game is flatout a boring affair that reeks of missed opportunities and thrown away potential.

To kick things off, let us discuss the important factor in all of this: the gameplay. The best tennis games offer a base that is easy to master, but rewarding if you can take full advantage of all the mechanics. The problem with Tennis World Tour is that the learning curve is harsh right from the get go. You will be required to hold action buttons, sometimes without instant feedback from the game. This makes the flow of it incredibly sluggish to the point of boredom. What doesn't help is that you need to hold the buttons for power, and you get no indication of this while serving the ball. These opening moments don't make for a great first impression.

Once you get a rally going, you can see what the developers are going for. The hard hitting tennis strikes between the two players feels very real and every action will cut it close. Even in those moments, the gameplay isn't without faulty design choices. There are moments where your input isn't immediately accepted by the game, without any good reason for it. In addition, the game sometimes forgets how to handle advanced shots. Your player might move longer than you might anticipate, causing you to miss shots on a regular basis. The moments it works the various strategies you can apply are awesome, but it stings to see good rallies end before their peaking moment. At the very least, the AI of your computer opponents is quite good.

When it comes to modes, the game is a shallow product. Outside of a tutorial, you can opt to play one-on-one versus matches or head into the Career Mode. I spent most of my time here, considering the limited potential of the multiplayer. In the Career Mode, you will make your own character and swing your way to the top. You are mostly playing Exhibition and Tournament matches to increase your rank and earn money and experience. This will allow your created star to reach new heights and make them the best player they can be. The money can be spent on gear, outfits, trainers and boosts in performance. Now and again, you are presented with training sections. These basically come to down hitting spots on the other sides of the field. Career Mode isn't anything special, but a decent enough time sink I reckon.

When it comes to multiplayer though, this game is rather thin. In local play, you can only play one-on-one. Tennis World Tour doesn't offer doubles or various ways to experience the game. It is basic tennis matches in which you need a number of sets and games to win. While the amount of stadiums is impressive (17 in total), the roster really raises some eyebrows. There are plenty of notable names missing, particularly when it comes to the embarrassing six women available. Each character has their own set of strengths and weaknesses, which in my book, never played a major stake in achieving a victory. Even more shameful is that the game has an online play button in the main menu, but left it greyed out. It really left me with nothing to hold on to for long.

Tennis World Tour looks fine on Nintendo Switch. Nothing stands out as remarkable, but it all decently presented. The character models in particular look like their real-life counterparts, which is worth praising. The load times are simply way too long, and it took a while for any action to start. Considering the downgrade on Nintendo Switch, I would've hoped for somewhat of a faster performance. On the other hand, they did retain the glitchy nature of the gameplay on other consoles, so who knows really. The promised commentary John McEnroe can barely be heard in the majority of the product. Even at that, you aren't missing much. He simply repeats the same set of lines over and over until the end of time.

Tennis World Tour is an underwhelming product in more ways than one. While it promises a professional tennis game, the way Breakpoint went about it isn't making me happy. There isn't really a star cast of tennis players, the gameplay has some extremely weak elements and the overall feeling is one a lack of care. The developers didn't care enough to prep some variables or offer something greater than the basics. That is honestly the biggest crime Tennis World Tour has committed, but even at that, this game needs a whole lot of work.

  • Fair presentation
  • Impressive stadium amount
  • Some exciting moments
  • Boring openings break flow
  • Doesn't go further than basics
  • Glitchy gameplay
  • Harsh learning curve
  • Long loading times

So you're saying Mario Tennis is the tennis game to choose...

A decent second serve — tennis world tour 2 review.

tennis world tour legends switch review

I’m not an athletic lad, but I do enjoy tennis on a casual level, so much so that some of my favorite gaming experiences involved playing Mario Tennis and Virtua Tennis with my brother. These were some of the best sports game memories I had growing up, and I miss the fact that there aren’t that many tennis games out there. Thankfully, a few companies have stepped up to serve out their own takes on the game, with Tennis World Tour 2 coming out as a Complete Edition on next gen consoles. While it’s not the greatest way to play the sport, it’s still a decently serviceable title for dedicated tennis fans.

At first glance, tennis is a sport that doesn’t seem like there would be much terminology or mechanics that would complicate matters. You have one or two players on each side of the court, and you have to make sure the tennis ball isn’t returned by the opponent. There are a few different things that are unique from other sports (the unorthodox scoring scheme, the fact that hitting the ball out of certain lines counts as an out, etc.), but the basics of the sport take about a couple minutes to explain.

In a way, arcade tennis games like the aforementioned Mario Tennis or Virtua Tennis simplify the experience to create a fun, accessible game for anyone looking for a casually good time. However, games like AO Tennis 2 or Tennis World Tour 2 go the simulation route, with a huge emphasis on shot types and movement-dependent swings. There are four main types of shots you can use corresponding to the face buttons, and holding R1 in conjunction with some shot types will change them as well. If you’re in a position where you can’t return a ball, mashing buttons won’t help you here. Hitting a drop shot (which is putting the ball near the net) and then following up with a lob (normally a counter to net players) is a good strategy for someone who doesn’t have the stamina to continue, for instance.

tennis world tour legends switch review

In addition to these movement-based techniques, there are two different swing shot types. Pressing in time quickly to return the ball is precision, which is weaker but grants more control over where you swing, while power is a slower but stronger shot where you hold a button to charge and then let go when you want to swing. These techniques put a spin on how to mix up your playstyle, and once you can find how to consistently do the shot type you want, the game becomes much more enjoyable.

Now Tennis World Tour 2 prides itself on how much content is in the game, and considering the PlayStation 5 version has all previous DLC and then some, I’d say there’s a ton here to satisfy the veteran fan. This version comes with the Legends DLC pack, which includes stars like Andy Murray and Maria Sharapova; in total, there are 48 athletes from which to choose, and it’s a solid roster for those who keep up with the sport. The game even has the players’ signature moves recreated here; it will go unnoticed for casual players, but I’m assuming Federer fans and other dedicated players will enjoy this attention to detail. There are also tons of stadiums to select, and you can customize each of them with different court environment and temperature types (which will affect factors like ball speed and stamina loss, among other things). In addition, you have things like career and exhibition mode, as well as the option to participate in tournaments like the Roland-Garros or make your own. I enjoyed the wealth of content here, but now here’s where things get a bit rough.

tennis world tour legends switch review

The PlayStation 5 version touts next-gen presentation and graphics, and while it isn’t a remarkable step up from the PlayStation 4 version, I can definitely see how the loading times were shortened. The stadia (I actually didn’t know this plural form of stadium until now!) are rendered well, with the details surrounding the courts a wonderful touch. However, the character models themselves look a bit underwhelming, with facial animations being adequate at best and wooden at worst. It’s a mix between “serviceable human model” and “weird uncanny valley”, and the characters look best from a distance.

tennis world tour legends switch review

In addition, the character customization in career (which you’ll spend the lion’s share of your playtime in single-player) is very limited, with only a few dozen choices for any given accessory, if that.  When you first start making your character, you only have a few tops to pick from, and you slowly unlock the ability to buy them as your level goes up in career mode. It’s a bit too much grinding for my tastes, and the fact that you’re only rewarded with a handful of customization options here is a bit jarring compared to the other content the game provides. It’s as if the developers spent their time crafting the roster and playable stages but forgot the importance of a Create a Character aspect in career. It would probably have been better to just omit this feature entirely and allow you to select an actual tennis star to use in this mode instead.

tennis world tour legends switch review

What there is customization on is in the card system, which will allow you to perform different power moves or hinder your opponent in different ways. They act as consumables, so you best use them wisely for hard matches. While it’s a unique take on the simulation genre (since these games pride on being realistic, having this… unrealistic aspect is jarring), I felt that these cards were unnecessary and caused a bit of a deterrent in playing the game normally. Thankfully, you can disable cards when playing exhibition matches, but I feel like Tennis World Tour 2 gravitates toward this aspect a bit too much to my liking.

Also, I want to add that this game is better with friends than bots; even on the easier difficulties, it felt like the AI kept running laps around me in some matches but then would do some stupid things like Double Faults consistently for a game. Harder difficulties were like this too, and I’m confused as to the inconsistency of the game’s AI. I ended up playing with my brother through local multiplayer and it was so much better, but if you aren’t playing online or with a buddy, prepare to have a less entertaining time.

Tennis World Tour 2

Tennis World Tour 2 on the PlayStation 5 is the definitive way to experience this realistic simulation title. While it does have quite a few flaws considering the package, there’s still a lot to love for those looking for a tennis game with a learning curve.

— Elisha Deogracias

  • Surprisingly complex controls that reward strategy
  • A lot of content in terms of player roster and stages
  • Beautiful looking environments…
  • …Though the players themselves don’t look too great
  • Character customization is limited
  • AI is inconsistently difficult
  • Card system feels unnecessarily broken

  • Review: Tennis World Tour 2 (Switch)

The second opus of Big Ant’s tennis game is here and while it greatly improves in certain fields it still lacks some key elements to become “The Ace”.

Tennis, it’s that game you watch live in the middle of the night on a European broadcast. Tennis games however are enjoyable whenever you want and now with the Switch’s handheld mode, wherever you want.

tennis world tour legends switch review

The first real good tennis game used to be Top Spin, I remember being blown away in a store seeing the graphical bump on the newly released Xbox 360 demo pods. Years later it’s Tennis World Tour that is making a name for itself and having a great game on the go is a real treat.

The game offers a wide variety of star players but due to some licensing problems, you’ll see some great names missing in the roster. Also note that there are almost double the number of male players in a sport that is quite gender-balanced. Some legends are paid DLC or pre-order bonuses while others are just missing from the game somehow. Federer, Nadal, and Medvedev are present as well as one of my favorites: Kvitova. As a Belgian, I had to side with Goffin for the majority of my matches.

tennis world tour legends switch review

Although the game offers a form of progression in stats and cards you can use to your advantage I feel like there was a missed opportunity to give your players a bit more customization options. The characters look great but a few more shoes, outfits and cap styles would’ve been nice to spice things up a little esthetically.

tennis world tour legends switch review

Not that the game looks bad, I was surprised by how good it looked most of the time! When the camera angles change to the action in replays there is a good attempt at a dynamic shallow depth of field but somehow it looks really clunky in some replays instead of making it look nice as intended. Most of the time you’ll be seeing the downwards camera angle from above and this one looks really crisp. From far away it looks like actual tennis footage from TV. The shadows cast on the ground are pulled off nicely and the colors are authentic!

tennis world tour legends switch review

It’s called World Tour for a reason and with the addition of different types of soil and weather, the game and locations all have multiple parameters that impact the gameplay. Whether it is fatigue weighing in on your stamina during hot climate or the modified bounciness of the ball on gravel and hard soil. They all have a change on gameplay and are not only a nice esthetic change. You can also choose to play during the night time or during the day to add immersion of overseas’ matches.

tennis world tour legends switch review

Animation wise the game deserves some credit! Vastly improving from the previous version and I just love how the facial expressions change when hitting the ball hard into the opponent’s side. I was afraid these facial expressions wouldn’t translate well on Switch since I never saw them in the first version. To my surprise, they were in this second opus and immediately noticeable!

tennis world tour legends switch review

If you’re new to the game the game handles this well by offering the tennis school in a step by step tutorial teaching you all there is to get you started. It has a low learning curve for the basics but mastering the technique to land the ball exactly where you want will take time and especially good response time/timing. You’ll have to think in advance to really keep the edge over your (AI) opponents. You can also choose to go with the Switch’s Joy-Con motion controls to have the most immersive experience. I found out that it translates well enough and if you love Wii Sports’ tennis back in the day you’ll feel right at home although it takes some time to move and coordinate your swings in the beginning. It’s like an extra layer of gameplay you can activate whenever you want!

tennis world tour legends switch review

Online gameplay is stable and it has a better matchmaking system underneath so that improvement is a welcome one. The addition of doubles is also a really nice smash from the developers. It’s what fans wanted and Tennis World Tour 2 listened.

I believe TWT2 is a great addition to the Switch’s roster and the game is really making progress by improving on its first iteration. Next time we want to see some more customization options and a more solid stat and campaign system. Let’s hope we can get past all the licensing hiccups as well someday to include all players, and locations around the world. But for now, we have a good tennis game on Switch to keep us entertained!

Critic Reviews for Tennis World Tour 2

Thesixthaxis.

Tennis World Tour 2 is a solid all-round tennis game, and the inclusion of the wildcard system offers an additional and entertaining tactical layer to consider as you play. It's just a shame that some minor issues hold it back from being great.

TWT2 feels unfinished, underdeveloped and somewhat soulless in some aspects. The swing mechanic might be a good idea conceptually, but it falls short of supplying that satisfaction that is transferred from simply hitting the ball in a tennis video game. Couple that with the malnourished feature set and you have one of the most disappointing tennis video games in a long while.

A good tennis simulation that, despite a few flaws and frustrating controls, has managed to achieve a much better result than the original game.

Review in Italian | Read full review

God is a Geek

Tennis World Tour 2 has gameplay that takes a while to master, but the healthy roster and well-designed courts offers a lot for tennis fans.

Nintendo Life

Tennis World Tour 2 is a simulation style affair that demands much from its players but doesn't reciprocate with a game that's capable of matching their efforts. Flaky AI and a lack of basic player animations leads to core gameplay here that feels rough and unsatisfying for the most part. Matches often descend into a procession of double faults, there's absolutely zero net play, and no matter how much practice you put in, things always feel like they're out of your control. There is a decent selection of modes here and the fundamental ideas behind the gameplay could have made for a good time, but a lack of finesse in how these things have been implemented mean this one is best avoided by all but the most foolhardy of tennis fans.

GamingTrend

Tennis World Tour 2 on the PlayStation 5 is the definitive way to experience this realistic simulation title. While it does have quite a few flaws considering the package, there's still a lot to love for those looking for a tennis game with a learning curve.

PlayStation Universe

A highly unsatisfying and directionless tennis game, with an abysmal character creator and career mode. Steer well clear and buy AO Tennis 2, bizarrely made by the exact same team responsible for this monstrosity.

The Games Machine

Tennis World Tour 2 improves upon its disastrous predecessor, but cannot completely make us forget its flaws because it's based on the same creaky structure. It can be fun, but you shouldn't expect perfection.

  • 35 Critical Hit Those hoping for an engaging, exciting Tennis game are bound to be disappointed. Tennis World Tennis World Tour is an unpolished, unfinished simulation that’s impossible to recommend.
  • 68 IGN Spain Despite being very improvable in all its aspects, Tennis World Tour is today the best realistic actual tennis game today. That doesn't mean that is better than Top Spin 4 (2011).
  • 1.8 User Score Based on 32 user reviews.
  • 40 Digital Chumps Some believe sports games to be one of the easiest games to develop and difficult to get wrong and then something like TWT comes around and proves that even something as straightforward as tennis can go awry.
  • 60 SomosXbox With a great base that reminds Top Spin, Tennis World Tour presents more errors than they should with a game that seems in progress.
  • 30 TheXboxHub I understand that delays, post-launch patches and day one updates are now par for the gaming course, but that doesn’t mean that a game shouldn’t be held back if it’s not up to scratch. Case in point: Tennis World Tour.
  • 43 Xbox Tavern I held hope that Tennis World Tour would at least be better than AO International Tennis, but in truth, this is equally as poorly developed, if not worse. The game houses more issues than content, hindered further by its bland visuals and shoddy audio. Tennis is a game of fluidity and precision, two things that Tennis World Tour, despite its decent career mode, fails miserably to realize.

All negative reviews are 100% accurate. Sound is WAY off. Game freezes and cuts off. During one tournament, neither player could return a serve! All aces both ways.
