To call emergency (dial 118) In an emergency, you will need to go to your nearest casualty department (Pronto Soccorso) and wait to be treated. If you are unable to do so, call 118 and the appropriate medical service will be sent to you.

Medical insurance In Italy medical insurance is compulsory for everybody. Socrates and all foreign students must also be insured when they come to Italy. The medical insurance you have in your country is always recognised by the Italian authorities, but, before coming to Italy you will have to contact your own authority regarding your insurance:

If you have a public insurance: Ask the institution that runs your insurance to issue the E111 MODEL, with this paper your insurance will be automatically extended to Italy.

If you have a private insurance: The Italian authorities recognise private insurance papers only if they are officially translated in Italian by an Italian Consulate. Therefore ask your insurance company for a paper that states that you are also insured for Italy and send it to the nearest Italian Consulate asking for an official translation of the document.

Any treatment, in private hospitals, dental work and secondary examinations, is not covered and therefore it is very important for all non-Italian citizens to be covered by a private or public health insurance before arriving in Italy.

Weekend and holidays we are open in Via Antonio Cocchi, 18 from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday and from 11 am to 4 pm on Sunday and holiday. Some routine blood work might not be possible as the lab is closed. The fees are higher than during the working days.

A chat consultation is now available also after the opening hours every day until 10.30 pm. The fees include prescriptions, referral and sick notes. Refill prescriptions and referrals can be requested via our booking platform without an appointment 365 days 24 hours. The fee is €45. New prescriptions and documents for new patients require a consultation (in person or online). Medical certificates (e.g. driving licence or work) cannot be issued without consultation and have different costs! The service “documents without prescriptions” doesn’t replace a medical consultation in case of sickness. It’s not possible to describe symptoms and get a prescription without an appointment!

Medical questions via WhatsApp or SMS will not be answered! If you have a health problem, we ask you to make a regular appointment in one of the clinics or online.

Dr. Carlo Smorlesi was very attentive. The offices were closed so he made a home visit. That was a very nice experience as well. He was knowledgeable, helped us out with some questions, gave clear instructions on what to do and helped us out with the medicine my wife and I needed. Thank you Dr. Smorlesi.

While on vacation my daughter came down with a sore throat. We did a walk-in to visit this Doctor Smorlesi. He was very responsive on the phone and allowed us to visit his office immediately. He conducted a Covid Test and exam of her tonsils, directed us to a local pharmacy and the charge was very reasonable ( 80 Euro for test and visit). He was terrific!

This service is outstanding! Everyone who is a tourist in Florence should know about it! My husband got sick with gastroenteritis and we desperately needed to see a physician for antibiotics. This service's information was given to me by a pharmacy at the train station and I am so thankful to have found them! They have in call medical services 24 hr and a walk in clinic right at the heart of the city by the Duomo. You have to call the general number if you are calling after hours and then another number mentioned in the phone recording for the doctor who is on call. As far as cost, it's $134 Euros for a home consult and $50 Euros for the consult at the walk-in clinic which is very reasonable for a self pay fee! They also give you an itemized receipt at the end of the consult so you can submit the claim to the insurance company in the USA for reimbursement. As far as the medical care itself, it was excellent! Dr. Anna Sara Longo was outstanding! She spoke perfect English, had great bedside manners and was very knowledgeable. I hope you are never in need of medical attention while in the beautiful city of Florence but, if you are, please call them! They truly were so convenient and outstanding in every possible way! Thank you!

How much does it cost?

The overall pricing will vary depending on the providers. Each of them competes on every request, bidding a fair price for your specific need. The average cost is 25 Euros for an online doctor visit. In-person appointments, specialists, and lab-work depend on the city. Send a request to find out, there’s no obligation to book and you get to choose your provider.  The visit does not include the cost of medications, but common antibiotics are very affordable in Italy. The cost of an antibiotic treatment ranges from 5 to 15 euros approximately.

Are doctors available on weekends

Yes, whenever you submit your request it is instantly received by the doctors active at that time. Whether it’s late at night, on a Sunday morning, or on New Year’s Eve, there’s always someone on the other side who’s ready to see you. When you receive an option for an appointment, there’s a person behind it (a doctor) who’s read your request and is willing to assist you.

Can I get antibiotics without seeing a doctor in-person?

Yes, antibiotics can be prescribed during a video consultation with a doctor. Antibiotics in Italy are not available over the counter and pharmacies do not have doctors on site. To buy antibiotics, you’ll need to carry a doctor’s prescription to a pharmacy. The cost of antibiotics can vary, typically ranging from 5 to 15 euros for common types. 

Can I contact the doctor for follow-up questions after the consultation?

You can message your physician with follow-up questions at no additional cost for up to 7 days after the video visit.

How Doctors in Italy protect my health information?

Doctors in Italy complies with GDPR regulations. When you submit a request on Doctors in Italy, the content of the request is shared with all available doctors while keeping your data anonymized until you select a provider. Once you’ve chosen a doctor and booked with them, your provided information and contact details will only be shared with them. Doctors in Italy will never sell your personal information.

Can I use my insurance to pay for the visit?

The fees are so affordable that you won’t need to. If your insurance covers you while in Italy, the easiest way is to request the report and bill from your doctor and claim for a refund after your trip.  Checking coverage, even in the best-case scenarios, can take hours, and sometimes days. This platform is designed to allow individuals to choose and pay an affordable price out-of-pocket, eliminating the need for insurance. You can still request a medical report or an itemized bill from the doctors to claim a refund if you wish to do so, or we can bill your insurance directly if it’s in the list.

During the fall and spring semesters, Syracuse Florence employs an English-speaking doctor who comes to the campus for a few hours each week.  Students can make an appointment with the doctor  by going to the Student Life Office (Villa Rossa, Rm. 10). The visit is a service provided by the university and is, therefore, free of charge.

If a student is unable to visit Syracuse Florence’s in-house doctor, there are other private options. In these cases the student is responsible for all related payments.

Santa Maria Nuova is the nearest public emergency hospital to the Syracuse Florence campus. There is usually an English-speaking physician on duty.

International SOS Card

Syracuse University is an institutional member of International SOS, a company that provides students studying abroad access to a full range of medical information and emergency services, including evacuation. For many years, ISOS has provided emergency medical services for worldwide organizations and corporations.

An ISOS membership card will be distributed to you where you arrive at your destination. Please use the SU membership number (11BCPA000177) to access the  ISOS website  before you go abroad. Students should sign and carry the card with them at all times or download the smartphone app. Parents/guardians should record the membership number and website address so they also have access.

As a member, you have access to ISOS  information  services at no charge. These information services range from the website information provided (including country risk ratings, State Department postings, medical travel recommendations, and immunization requirements) to access to medical doctors via phone consultation, referrals to English-speaking doctors, to care assessment and translation services in case of hospitalization

The ISOS 24-hour information services and smart phone application are especially valuable when you are traveling during breaks, or visiting destinations where you have no local contacts and find yourself needing medical advice. Please download the smartphone app, and register your travel information on the  MyTrips portal .

Please note that  use of actual medical services (beyond information services) is not free . While you have access to ISOS clinics and doctors around the world, you will be responsible for the cost of such services if not covered by your health insurance policy, or the ISIC insurance policy. The ISOS program and membership is not an insurance plan.

HonorHealth is stepping in to bring high-quality care to communities in the East Valley and Florence

Earlier this year, Steward Health Care faced some financial hurdles and declared bankruptcy, leading to their facilities being up for sale.

Here’s the good news : Starting Wednesday, Sept. 11, HonorHealth will step in to begin managing four Steward Health Care facilities and multiple outpatient physician practices while licensing and important systems are transitioned. Once this transition period is complete, HonorHealth plans to assume full operational ownership.

Medical Tourism Is On The Rise — And It's Pretty Depressing, Honestly

Earlier this summer, U.S. women’s rugby team player Ariana Ramsey came home from the 2024 Paris Olympics with more than just a bronze medal. She also returned with a pair of free eyeglasses and a new TikTok bio that read: “Universal Free Healthcare Advocate.”

Following her team’s victory against Australia, the 24-year-old Olympian went viral on TikTok by documenting her experience receiving completely free healthcare in the Olympic Village. Ramsey had dental and vision exams, as well as a pap smear.

“Of course, I’m amazed. We don’t have free healthcare in America,” she said in a video responding to people’s comments about her excitement for the complimentary services. “So, yeah, I’m amazed by free healthcare.”

Most of us mere mortals will never see the inside of an Olympic Village, let alone partake in its medical practitioner perks. But Ramsey’s experience reflects a phenomenon that many people are participating in: medical tourism. American patients are traveling all over the world to undergo medical procedures, physical exams and surgeries.

One of the main reasons for medical tourism, unsurprisingly, is cost. When Anna McKitrick , a 30-year-old who hosts vegan food tours around the world, woke up one morning in July 2020 with excruciating pain in her mouth, she knew she had to do something — and fast. “I woke up and thought someone shot me in the face,” McKitrick told HuffPost. “I’d never been in that much pain in my life.”

She ended up having the tooth extracted in the United States but needed an implant urgently. “When you extract a tooth, it’s a bit of a time crunch,” she said. “You have to put something in the empty space or it will mess up your teeth for life.”

She was working as a server in Los Angeles at the time, and even with dental insurance, she was quoted $40,000 to cover the work she needed done.

McKitrick’s mom, who also dealt with a related problem and had a similar procedure done in Switzerland, did some research. She was referred by that Switzerland clinic to a surgeon that trained at a facility in Costa Rica.

“I didn’t have $40,000 to spend on my teeth,” McKitrick said. “After looking into it, we decided going to Costa Rica would be the best option.”

Once there, she had two implants, crowns and four cavitation surgeries for a quarter of the price it would have cost in the States ― around $10,000.

The financial appeal is undeniable. Healthcare in the U.S. is often understandably criticized for being overpriced and overcomplicated. According to health policy organization KFF , people in the United States owe at least $220 billion in medical debt .

It’s just one of the reasons medical tourism has grown in popularity both domestically and internationally, according to David Vequist, professor and founder/director of the Center for Medical Tourism Research at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio.

While it’s difficult to know the exact numbers because there are many procedures done on the gray and black market, “wellness tourism by itself is estimated to be an over trillion-dollar industry,” Vequist told HuffPost.

According to Patients Beyond Borders , a medical tourism guide, Mexico is the most-visited destination for medical travel, followed by Costa Rica, Thailand, Turkey and Colombia. Among the most popular procedures Patients Beyond Borders has reported on are general and complex dental work (65%), cosmetic and plastic surgery or non-invasive cosmetic treatments (15%), bariatric or weight loss treatments (5%), and fertility treatments (5%).

Mexico is such a popular destination for medical tourism that it even has dedicated border entrances specifically for medical tourists, with Vequist recalling how he once breezed through a security line with a doctor — a process that can usually take hours.

But cost is not the only reason for medical tourism’s popularity. People also travel to other countries for procedures that are not covered by their insurance in the United States or when something, like a medication or treatment, is not available here.

“There was a time before Lasik was approved by the FDA in the United States that it was available in Mexico, so people would travel there to have the procedure done,” Vequist said.

However, not everyone in the medical industry is on board with patients traveling for treatment.

Dr. Kelly Killeen , a Los Angeles-based plastic surgeon, has recently emerged as a voice on TikTok, warning her followers about some of the potential downsides of medical tourism, specifically as it pertains to cosmetic and elective surgeries.

“I try to start these conversations the same way every time, which is to say that there are wonderful doctors all over the world,” she told HuffPost. “The key to finding a wonderful doctor is being able to check credentials, check facilities, and knowing the local rules for how doctors practice. The problem with going out of the country is that we’re not familiar with their systems. Unless you are from the country, with an intimate knowledge of how the system works, it’s a risk.”

“The good surgeons in those countries are not significantly cheaper than the United States,” she continued. “It’s very important to understand that if you’re going somewhere that’s charging a tenth of what you paid in Los Angeles, it’s very unlikely that you’re going to a top-notch surgeon and facility.”

Although Killeen acknowledged that the American medical system has made care difficult and cost-prohibitive, she said that in the case of some of these cosmetic surgical procedures, the risk does not outweigh the reward or the savings.

“On a weekly basis, I get two to three people in my DMs asking for help during a post-op period where they can’t get ahold of the surgeon they saw,” she said. “It breaks my heart to say that legally I cannot provide them with medical care. They end up in the emergency room, and that’s not where they should be ― they should be in their surgeon’s office.”

Proximity to your doctor is something to be mindful of as a potential drawback for medical tourism. McKitrick, who ended up having to fly back to Costa Rica for a follow-up procedure, said she was not “financially or emotionally prepared” to go back.

“If I were to do it again, I’d probably go to a place I was more familiar with, or a place where I know people, as it was a bit tough emotionally being post-op in a completely foreign country,” she said.

Another consideration to keep in mind when seeking treatment abroad is the difference in legal systems. As Vequist said, the U.S. is extremely litigious, making the process of pursuing damages in the event that something goes wrong more straightforward.

“You can sue for anything,” he said. “The doctor, the hospital, the dentist needs to be fearful. Internationally, there is very little ability to pursue damages.”

The other aspect to think about ahead of any medical tourism is factoring in the cost of travel.

In a viral TikTok video posted in June, Bryn Elise shared her experience having a full day of medical exams in Turkey to the tune of $810 ― something she jokingly said would cost “36537951 zillion dollars in the US.”

“Personally, I’d rather spend $700 on a flight to Turkey, get dozens of tests there, and take a whole vacation, rather than spend the thousands that this would have cost in the United States,” she said in the video. Since then, she has released other videos where she shares her test results, follow-up appointments and tips on how to schedule the same treatments.

Ultimately, doing your research, working with people you trust and vetting your doctors are crucial when considering seeking out treatment internationally. For McKitrick, even with the follow-up, she overall doesn’t regret getting her procedure done outside of the country.

“I didn’t have any other options,” she said. “It was either do this, or not get my teeth done — which would mean I would have no teeth. And I’m really glad I did it. Even now, I would do it all over again.”
