When we say "safari hat" odds are the first hat people envision are pith helmets worn by the likes of President Theodore Roosevelt and other safari goers, and it can be a bit puzzling how such a style eventually led itself to be the safari brim hat we know today.

Best Canned Moscow Mule Brands You Can Find

I’m a fan of canned cocktails in general, but a canned Moscow Mule is particularly satisfying, because the cocktail is designed to be sipped out of a metallic vessel. (Yes, the copper mug is just marketing but it’s part of the cocktail’s DNA.) I along with other canned Moscow Mule fans are in luck, because there happens to be a lot of Moscow Mule cans on the market. But, like most things that spring from promising ideas, not all of them are executed well. 

We sourced ten different brands making a Mule drink in a can—including both Moscow Mules (ginger beer, lime, and vodka) and Whiskey Mules (ginger beer, lime, and whiskey, also called Kentucky Mules). We looked for spicy ginger beer flavor (these are Mules we’re talking about, not Bucks, which are made with ginger ale ). We looked for real, citrusy lime flavor—not just citric acid. And we looked for fizz. Lots and lots of fizz. Did a premade Moscow Mule have to taste like booze to make this list? Nope! I think the reason a lot of folks drink Moscow Mules (and other vodka cocktails ) is because they don’t taste like alcohol. So we didn’t ding any Moscow Mule cans for hiding their spirited base. 

Here are the best Moscow Mule cans (and other Whiskey Mule cans) you can buy. 

Best Zero Sugar

This zero sugar canned Moscow Mule from Reed’s (maker of some of the best ginger beer ) is very, very tart. If you like an extra squeeze or two of lime in your drinks, then this could be the best canned Moscow Mule to buy—especially if you’re cutting down on sugar. That extra lime flavor is essential. It helps cover up the flavor of artificial sweeteners, so you don’t immediately know you’re drinking a zero sugar cocktail. It’s limey (very limey). It’s gingery. It’s refreshing.

Best Tropical

Unlike some cocktails like the Negroni or Manhattan or Martini, I’m not too precious about the Moscow Mule. Go ahead and doctor it up or adapt it however you please. Make it a tropical cocktail by adding a splash of mango, as long as you do it like Absolut and actually make it taste like real, fresh mango nectar. This Moscow Mule in a can boasts a balance of spicy ginger beer and sweet-but-not-too-sweet mango flavor. And there’s practically zero alcohol flavor. If you want booze but don’t like the taste of booze, this is the best premade Moscow Mule you can buy.

Best Non-Alcoholic

Did you expect to see a non-alcoholic Moscow Mule this high on our ranking of the best Moscow Mule cans? I didn’t. But that just speaks to the quality of this canned mocktail . It’s infused with “distilled botanicals,” which is what sets it apart from just being some limey ginger beer. It’s spicy and bubbly—it really tickles your nose—and it has a very restrained sweetness. It really tastes like a cocktail, and yet, no booze! Plus, it’s only 35 calories. Whether you’re sober or just looking for something better than a soda to drink with lunch, this is the Moscow Mule in a can for you.

Best Whiskey Mule

On the other end of the spectrum is this Whiskey Mule drink in a can. This is BOOZY. It’s 11% ABV. (Compare that to a standard can of beer, which usually hovers around 6% ABV.) It’s dry—not too sweet at all—but it also doesn’t smack you over the head with whiskey. You still get a lot of spicy, refreshing ginger beer flavor. You can drink a whole can easily—so watch out, whiskey drinkers, because you’ll go through a lot of these if you aren’t careful.

Best Fall Flavored Mule

I know it’s not even summer as I write this, but I’m already stocking up on these Whiskey Mules for the fall. When you crack a can, you’re instantly hit by a genuine apple aroma. And when you sip it, you sip fresh ginger apple cider. It almost tastes a little like the sweet pickled ginger you get with takeout sushi. It actually tastes more like a classic Reed’s ginger beer than the Reed’s canned Moscow Mule—but with the addition of some fresh-pressed apple cider . My only critique is that you can’t actually taste much bourbon. But the flavors you can taste are so good, I’m willing to let that go.

Best of the Best

Sold in a copper can (why wouldn’t it be?), Mule 2.0 is the best canned Moscow Mule around. It’s tart and spicy and sweet—all in perfect harmony. Essentially, this is boozy ginger beer, and isn’t that what you want out of the best Moscow Mule in a can? If you really like it limey, you could add a squeeze of lime, but it’s certainly not necessary. It’s a true, classic Moscow Mule. And, at 8% ABV, it’ll get you tipsy without totally knocking you out.

Allow 1cm variance for all garment measurements (as an example a 56cm garment measurement has a variance of 55-57cm. Please factor that into deciding on the size to order.)

How to order the correct size Rufiji™ or Mara&Meru™ hat: • To work out which hat will give you the most comfortable fit, simply measure your head at the fullest part where your hat will sit, which will be just above your ears. Please use this measurement to determine the size above. It is best to select a hat size which has an Inner Crown measurement slightly larger than your head size. • Please note that only our leather hats will have a very small amount of stretch (approximately 1cm). • As children's heads grow faster than their bodies, this size chart also applies to boys and girls. • UK and US hat sizes given below are our approximates of the equivalent hat size in each country. Moscow Mule

The Moscow mule is a spectacular mixed drink that is also incredibly simple. There are no big secrets to making a great Moscow mule—all you need are vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice. It doesn't require shaking or any special bar tools, so anyone can mix it up in minutes. This casual vodka cocktail is great for any occasion and has a snappy spice that is refreshing and invigorating.

The Moscow mule recipe dates to World War II. The drink came back into the spotlight in the 21st century, and it is one of the hottest bar drinks in the world today. This resurgence introduced a new generation of drinkers to the great taste of the Moscow mule. It has also led to a few misconceptions, including the prolific use of ginger ale.

If you want to go the traditional route, serve your Moscow mule in a copper mug. In addition to making a handsome drink, the mug keeps the cocktail well chilled, even on hot days. Some drinkers believe that it adds a nice flavor to the drink, too. A mug is not required and the drink is equally refreshing in a normal glass.

1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice

4 ounces ginger beer

Pour the vodka and lime juice into a copper mug, stainless steel mug, or collins glass filled with ice cubes.

Top off with the ginger beer and garnish with a lime wedge . Serve and enjoy.

• It's hard to go wrong with your choice of vodka in this drink. Many budget-friendly brands make a Moscow mule as good as any of the premium vodkas . Pour your favorites and see which you enjoy best.

Does Ginger Beer Contain Alcohol?

Contrary to the name, ginger beer is nonalcoholic, though the original British version did include alcohol. The majority of modern ginger beer is a soft drink and a spicier version of ginger ale that's typically made with real ginger . Good ginger beers can be drunk straight and make an excellent cocktail mixer.

Can You Make a Moscow Mule With Ginger Ale?

Many people, including bartenders, have been making the Moscow mule with ginger ale or citrus soda for years. If you want to keep it authentic, then this cocktail requires ginger beer. Technically, if you pour ginger ale, you're making a vodka buck. It's a vodka press with lemon-lime and club sodas, and club soda alone makes it a vodka soda.

What Is the Best Ginger Beer for a Moscow Mule?

There are many impressive ginger beers to choose from today. The options are increasing all the time, thanks in large part to this particular drink. Each brand varies in the ginger's intensity as well as the sweetness. Some have a softer spice reminiscent of ginger ale, while others are very strong and unforgettable. Two ginger beers that were developed specifically for cocktails are Q Ginger Beer and Fever-Tree Ginger Beer . Both make an excellent mule and fall right in the middle of the extremes.

How Strong Is the Moscow Mule?

The average Moscow mule is fairly tame, though it will vary with more or less ginger beer. If you pour an 80-proof vodka with 4 ounces of ginger beer, the alcohol content is just 11 percent ABV (22 proof). In general, it's equivalent to the average glass of wine.

The Moscow Mule's History

Along with drinks like the white Russian , the Moscow mule was designed to sell vodka to U.S. drinkers in the mid-20th century. Before that time, vodka was relatively unknown to Americans, though it didn't take long for them to fall in love with the clear spirit.

There are a couple of claims to the invention of the Moscow mule. One dates to 1939 at the Cock 'n Bull pub in Hollywood. The story goes that the bar's owner, Jack Morgan, partnered up with Smirnoff Vodka's John Martin to promote the vodka and the bar's house-made ginger beer. Apparently, it was a winning situation for the team because both beverage brands are alive and well today.

Another story jumps ahead to 1941 at the same bar when the head bartender, Wes Price, needed to unload some liquor that wasn't selling. This successful promotion was enhanced by a marketing campaign in which a Moscow mule made with Smirnoff was served in copper mugs. The mugs became the drink's trademark vessel, the campaign was a success for the Russian vodka, and the mule was a smash hit.

Is It Safe to Drink From a Copper Mug?

The popularity of the Moscow mule's copper mug has brought up the possibility of copper toxicity. The concern is that acidic food and drinks can leach copper out of unlined copper vessels, and the U.S. FDA has guidelines for establishments that use this material.   Experts say that a drink would have to sit in the mug for hours to get a harmful amount of copper, and it is not advised to store acidic food or beverages in copper. However, most copper mugs sold today are lined with nickel, stainless steel, or another food-safe coating and are perfectly safe for drinks.

Recipe Variations

Since this is such a popular cocktail, it's no surprise that the Moscow mule has served as inspiration for many more drink recipes. It's the perfect base for experimentation, and you can really have fun playing with its flavors.

• In the vodka ginger cocktail , the ginger beer is swapped out for a combination of ginger simple syrup and club soda. This results in a sweeter, less spicy drink.
• Switch your vodka out for gin, and you have the classic foghorn .
• Add dimension by muddling a little mint into the foghorn and enjoy the popular gin-gin mule .
• The Kentucky mule, or horsefeather, uses a shot of bourbon for the liquor.
• A drink called the Mexican mule prefers tequila.
• While a Cuban or Jamaican mule features rum, the dark 'n stormy calls for a specific dark rum.
• Warm things up in winter with pear vodka and ginger beer to create a steaming Christmas mule .
