From the Classic wedge of the early 80s to the brand new 588 RTX, Cleveland has led by example, with game-changing innovations such as Multiple Finishes, Zip Grooves, Laser Milling and Precision Forged.

With that in mind, we’ve scrolled through the archives to provide you with everything you need to know about the history, heritage and success of the brand through the years...

Cleveland announced its name on the wedge stage with its Classic Tour Forged in 1983. The wedge was traditionally forged of mild carbon steel and provided consistent distance, a four-way cambered sole for forgiveness and positive bounce.

A year later, Cleveland unveiled its muscle back Classic PW and SW to generate concentrated power behind the ball. The wedge also featured a simple, four-way bounce and tapper tipped shafts for greater head feel.

In 1985, Cleveland pushed the boundaries in wedge design further with its 485 Tour Action mild carbon steel wedge - once again with the sole aim of providing the most consistent distance.

The wedge encompassed a solid back design for superior ball manoeuvrability and a rounded leading edge to enhance a shallow entry.

But three years later, Cleveland would set the industry benchmark for classic wedges when launching the famous 588 Tour Action, featuring U-shaped grooves that allowed the golfer to produce higher ball flights and greater spin than ever before.

Made from 8620 soft carbon steel, the Tour-proven wedges were also created with a traditional shape that promoted great feel and touch around the greens, as well as a large face area and high toe profile.

Much of its success can be attributed to the V Sole, which narrowed towards the heel to provide needed bounce on full shots and added versatility around the green.

One year after showcasing the 588 to the world, the brand decided to enhance its range further with Gun Metal 588, TA 588 Perimeter and 588 Tour Action BeCu wedges, which were made of Beryllium Copper and featured the classic 588 shape.

I own three CG15 wedges but got a 900 form forged wedge with a cheap second set of irons i picked up on ebay. Took the new set out and fell in love with the older 900 wedge, was just excellent in terms of feel and versitility - sand, short chips, 90 yards or less pitches. Less offset and thinner top line give it a less chunky, lighter feel which I preferred. Couldnt tell much difference in terms of spin considered the grooves arent lazer milled like the CG15s. Just found myself reaching for it all the time with some really great results. The 56* 900 wierdly has exact same loft as the 52* CG15 so one of them isnt correct, no difference held side to side and this is also the same for how far I could hit them at full swing, maybe Cleveland have reduced the lofts of late? I was really pleased to read excellent reviews of this club after playing with it because it deserves praise - shame they dont make them any more.

These are great wedges, if you have the right swing for them. After having no name wedges, with huge forgiving heads, these are a great upgrade. I was shocked to feel how heavy they felt in my hands. I am a grip and rip type player, and these wedges do not let me do that. They keep me in control and swinging smooth. If not i will hit a little blade/stinger type shot which advances about 10 yards. I have learned to only swing these wedges when I am 100 yards and under. If I try to max a 56 out to 110 (which I can) I just end up missing the green or hitting one of those stinger wedges I was telling you about. Overall Cleveland should be proud about the great product that they have created. Well done!

I had never owned a lob wedge prior to this beuty, and thought the extra loft would cause problems. How wrong i was! The gun metal finish really does reduce glare from the sun alot!On pitches around 50 yards and in, BEWARE, this baby can put HUGE masses of check spin on your balls. Full wedge shots now stop dead, first bounce. The wedge is fantastic from bunkers, it really cuts through thin and thick sand and rough with no effort. The most versitlie wedge i have owned. I think that this wedge is a great weapon for any level of golfer. If you can make a half decent swing, the club will reward you nicely. A great feel also, soft as BUTTER! All in all a great wedge for any golfer. Demoe one to see the difference a lob wedge can do to your short game!

Great Club! Of course, what were you expecting, a bad review? It's a Cleveland! I tested this side-by-side to the CG10, the 588 RTG, and the 588 genmetal. This just felt the best. It plays so well from wherever you are, if you are in the fairway, it hits nice and high but perfectly straight. I also chip better with this club than with my pitching wedge. I've even chipped in a few times. The only drawback is that it is kind of pricey, I was lucky in that Golfzilla, where I bought it, had a demo that was still in very good shape and were willing to sell it for $50. But I would gladly pay the full price!

The best thing about these wedges is the look of them. Even in the higher lofted wedges the look is unparalleled and the finish is very good. In play these wedges have a nice feel and are very versatile of shots around the green. Alos they can be found for a reasonable price. The RRP is £119 each but I got both for £140.

This is the first 60 deg wedge I've owned, and shaping up to be the best club I've ever purchased. Couldn't get on with an old 64 deg Hogan wedge I owned (too many shots flew high and landed short i.e. in the bunker, or got thinned through the green), and my Ping G2 sand-wedge just doesn't do it well enough at short range. From 60 yards in, this club is superb, and although it's early days, I've put the ball within putting range of the pin every time so far. You just need to trust to the heaviness of the head and the loft of the club, make an easy swing, and the ball flies high and lands soft.

Hogan lob-wedge. Snake-Eyes 58 deg wedge (couldn't get on with it at all - sold it).

I have the 900 gunmetal 56-degree. i love my wedge. it's very easy to set up at adress, and seems perfectly balanced making shots from inside 80-85 yds very accurate for me. the ball comes off nicely with just the right amount of spin. i plan to purchase another Cleveland gap wedge soon.

Is it 2024 that the groove rule kicks in for everyone?

Not necessarily.  “ Clubs that conformed to the rules that were in effect prior to Jan. 1, 2010 will continue to conform to the Rules of Golf until at least 2024, unless the Condition is in effect.”

The “condition” they reference is a condition of competition. There are other conditions of competition, such as the one ball rule, and I don’t feel bad about not adhering to that. I also don’t routinely check my driver for coefficient of restitution to verify that it hasn’t changed. 

If it would affect participation if a high level competition, yeah, I’d switch. But other than that, they comply until 2024.  And since they worded it “at least,” I expect they’ll make some clarification in 2023–two years from now.

I think I'll keep using it until 2024. Just as well since it is a decent club for me currently. Today it stalked the 50 yard flag on the range well. Thanks for the info everyone.

Cleveland Tour Action Irons Review – Still Good And Forgiving For High Handicappers?

“The Cleveland Tour Action irons were made to resemble blades but provide the forgiveness of cavity back irons.”

There were a few different iterations of the Cleveland Tour Action irons but for this review, I tested the Cleveland Tour Action 7 irons. This is the latest, and some would argue, greatest version of the Tour Action irons.

With these irons, Cleveland was really trying to bridge the gap between game improvement and players performance. Did they succeed? Are the Cleveland Tour Action irons any good for high handicappers? Read on to find out.

Are Cleveland Tour Action Irons Still Good?

“The Cleveland Tour Action irons have a very unique feature that I don’t think I’ve seen in any other irons.”

At least, not in any irons I can remember. The feature I’m talking about is the “Micro Cavity.” There are about five little chambers bored into the back of the topline. The purpose of these tiny chambers is to lighten the top portion of the head so that the center of gravity is shifted downward.

This design also helps to move more weight to the perimeter of the head where it can provide more forgiveness. The Cleveland Tour Action irons also feature the Vibration Absorption Technology that Cleveland actually patented.

The Cleveland Tour Action irons are cavity backs with progressive offset. At address, you can see the cavity undercut jut out a bit behind the relatively thin top line. You’re not going to be fooled into thinking you’re playing blades but they do have a clean look for cavity backs.

The Cleveland Tour Action irons also have a healthy face depth. There is enough real estate up and down the face to eliminate your thin shots. However, I did have some issues with digging.

Overall though, the Cleveland Tour Action irons have a light, wieldy feel. I found myself falling into a groove with them relatively quickly.

Are the Cleveland Tour Action Irons Forgiving for High Handicappers?

“The best thing about the Cleveland Tour Action irons for high handicappers is that they have a big sweet spot.”

After just a few swings, I found the rhythm of these irons and was able to hit the expansive sweet spot consistently. The offset is generous in the long irons which didn’t look great to me; but it did provide excellent forgiveness.

The combination of the pronounced offset and the large sweet spot made the long irons in this set very easy to manage. And the long irons are notorious for giving neophyte players trouble so I would say that these irons are forgiving for high handicappers.

The large cavity back design helps to push mass towards the perimeter of the head. This stabilizes much of your common mis-hits.

The distance I was getting from these irons was a bit above average. With the 7-iron, I was averaging 158.7 yards. The dispersion was also reasonably tight when I stayed within the scoring lines.

And while the sweet spot is wide and hard to miss, if you do manage to miss it, don’t expect much forgiveness. On shots that missed the sweet spot, my ball was picking up a ton of spin and losing a lot of speed. As a result, my divergence widened and my carry distance dropped.

Cleveland Tour Action Vs Cleveland Launcher XL Halo Irons

“The Cleveland Launcher XL Halo’s are hybrid irons with a hollow body design.”

The Cleveland Launcher XL Halo irons also come stock with counterbalanced shafts. The Launcher XL Halo irons are extremely forgiving but they offer no workability. Also, if you aren’t used to counterbalanced shafts, they may feel weird to you. I would only recommend the Cleveland Launcher XL Halo irons to pure beginners.

Cleveland Tour Action First Impressions

“I liked the fact that the Cleveland Tour Action irons did in fact offer a moderate degree of workability in a forgiving iron.”

They don’t really look like blades which is something I was expecting and hoping for. But I was able to work the ball left and right to a moderate degree. They aren’t massive irons. Instead, they have a moderate head size which strikes a really good balance between forgiveness and versatility.

The VAS is designed to smooth out those harsh vibrations when you miss the sweet spot. I had no problem with the feel of these irons. They felt smooth and consistent all across the face.

Micro Cavities

The small cavities bored behind the top line work to redistribute weight low in the club head. They also appear to be filled with some sort of polymer or urethane which may contribute to the smooth feel.

Deep Face Profile

The deep face profile makes it much more difficult to hit the ball thin. For me though, the same feature was causing me to dig more than usual on the fairway.

Cleveland Tour Action Loft & Lie

Who should buy the cleveland tour action irons.

“This was a tricky one to decide.”

First of all, I would say that Cleveland did in fact do a good job of making an iron that was at once forgiving and workable. The Cleveland Tour Action irons are inherently forgiving and it takes extreme mis-hits to affect their accuracy.

They can be point-and-shoot irons, and for more skilled players, they can be worked side-to-side a bit. So in the end, I suppose these irons would work for high and mid handicappers. Pretty much anyone in the 12-24 handicap range.

Distance: 96/100

Forgiveness: 96/100, workability: 96/100, overall performance: 96/100, value: 97/100.

Golf Monthly's Cleveland RTX-3 wedges review, a model designed to provide more control from a wider variety of lies as well as better feel and forgiveness

Key technology New Feel Balancing technology shifts the centre of gravity (CG) closer to the centre of the clubface by shortening the hosel and inserting a micro cavity to save weight. This reduces vibration to improve feel while head stability at impact increases for better forgiveness and distance control. A new V shape sole improves turf interaction while new Tour Zip Grooves have a deeper, narrower U shape with a sharp edge radius to enhance control and help prevent fliers.

Looks With its clean muscleback design, the RTX-3 wedges come in a tour satin finish and a new, highly durable black satin finish. Compared with the 588 RTX 2.0, the new RTX-3 is a little more rounded and has a narrower hitting area from heel-to-toe but two extra grooves because they are spaced more tightly.

Head Design Cleveland’s aforementioned Feel Balancing technology means there’s a shorter hosel section in this design. A more centered CG location within the head means the wedge should feel more stable and performance on mishits should improve, resulting in more consistent distance and accuracy. Improved face milling helps increase control.

Feel No question, the feel off the face is excellent; soft and with plenty of feedback on the strike location. Perhaps more impressive is the feel of these wedges through the turf. From tight lies, the V shape sole design with more leading edge bounce glides through the turf almost, even when you catch the ground slightly before the ball, creating shallow divots. This should hopefully help nervy chippers relax a little easier over the ball.

Forgiveness Preservation of control and accuracy on mishits is another big improvement of RTX-3 over its predecessor and one that is underrated. They feel more stable at impact, the strike feels crisper and as a result the carry distances were more consistent. The improvement in the side-to-side dispersion was also pleasing, enhancing the accuracy from the wedges on full shots.

Control Spin levels were very high, even on partial pitch shots and shots from the rough. From tight lies, the laser face milling and surface roughness provides ample check on the second bounce, meaning you can accelerate the clubhead more aggressively through impact with more commitment and trust that the ball will still stop where you want it to.

Versatility The grinds or sole shaping isn’t as aggressive as other wedge designs but there’s still enough heel and toe relief on the different bounce options to play most shots around the green. The mid-bounce grind is especially versatile, ideal for your most frequently used wedge loft.

Ball flight The different technologies on the face work together to grip the ball extremely well and as a result the initial launch angle and ball flight is lower than you might expect. With a lower flight comes extra control of the trajectory and a larger first bounce, something to bear that in mind.

Distance Cleveland’s wedge upgrade from 588 RTX 2.0 isn’t about hitting the ball further. You’ll find distances are more consistent in windy conditions and the amount of roll out becomes more predictable from different lies, helping you judge the ball’s journey on short game shots.
