Golconda Fort is one of the many historical monuments in Hyderabad. It is located on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The origins of the Golconda Fort can be traced back to the 11th century.

This fortress ruin consists of four distinct forts with a 10 km long outer wall, eight gateways, and four drawbridges, with a number of royal apartments and halls, temples, mosques, stables, etc. inside.

The architecture of Golconda Fort is awe-inspiring. The carvings and designs made at every corner of the fortress speak of its royal Ness. Standing at the top part of the fort, a full view of Hyderabad city can be seen.

This historical site has a unique acoustic feature that has been described as an “Amazing Clapping Telephone”. At a certain point below the fateh darwazan “Victory Gate”, a hand clap at that point below the dome reverberates and can be heard clearly at the ‘Bala Hisar’ pavilion, the highest point almost a kilometer away.

This worked as a warning in case of an attack. You can experience this magical effect on your own at the fort. The best season to visit the fort is in monsoon season, as the mansion requires long walks, which is tiresome in summer. And the most recommended time is that evening to enjoy the beautiful view of the sunset from the top and you can also attend the sound and light show at night.

Salar Jung Museum is a one-man collection of art. It was established in the year 1951. It is maintained by the Salar Jung Family. The family is one of the most illustrious families in Deccan history, five of them having been prime ministers in the erstwhile Nizam rule of Hyderabad-Deccan.

All the artifacts and art were collected by Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, more popularly known as Salar Jung III. After his death, the entire collection was left behind without an inheritor. It was the family members of the late Nawab who got together to gift the fabulous collection to the nation as there could not have been a better proposal.

Salar Jung Museum Hyderabad Hall

Salar Jung Museum is considered the third largest museum in India. It was inaugurated by the First Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. In the year of 1968, the entire collection of the museum and the library was shifted to the present building from Diwan Deodi.

The present building is spread over 10 acres of land and consists of 2 floors. It comprises 3 buildings namely, Eastern Block (Mir Laiq Ali Khan Bhavan), Western Block (Mir Turab Ali Khan Bhavan), and the Indian/Central Block. There are 38 galleries in these 3 buildings altogether. 27 galleries are present in the Indian/Central Block, 7 galleries in the Western Block and Eastern Block houses 4 galleries.

The museum has a rare collection of around 43000 art objects, 9000 manuscripts, and 47000 printed books. The collection consists of one of the most famous clocks that is a 19th Century British Musical Clock. This clock was sold by Cooke and Kelvey of England. Another attraction is the Veiled Rebecca, marble statue which was created by an Italian sculptor G B Benzoni in 1876.

Salar Jung Museum Musical Clock

Salar Jung Museum Clock Show Timing:

One of the main attractions of the museum is the British Bracket Clock. Inside the clock, there’s a special thing that makes a little toy man with a beard come out 3 minutes before each hour. When it’s exactly the 60th minute, he hits a bell to match the time and then goes back inside (eg. 10 times at 10′ o clock). This clock is really cool and a lot of people come to the museum every day just to watch the toy man hit the gong at each hour.

Golconda is a must see spots in Hyderabad without a mention. But before trying to understand its importance, let us try to take a sneek peek at how the name emerged in the first place. It is a well known fact that mountains were mostly habited by the Shepherds and in Telugu, being the local language, the shepherds were called Golla and the Hill that was habited by the Golla’s was called as Golla Konda, where Konda meant Hill in Telugu. Later it has slowly also got a name as Golconda as Gol meant round in Hindi language, owing to its round shaped hill structure.

During the medival period of Qutb Shah Empire, this Fort was the capitol of the kingdom in Southern India. This is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as it is still cherished as the source of few of the most Golkonda, also known as "Golconda" , Gol konda ("Round shaped hill") , or Golla konda ,(Shepherds Hill) is a citadel and fort in Southern India and was the capital of the medieval sultanate of the Qutb Shahi dynasty .The region is known for the mines that have produced some of the world's most famous gems, including the Koh-i-Noor, the Hope Diamond, Nassak Diamond and the Noor-ul-Ain. Golconda is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Do you want to know a little history about its heritage? Well, we have it for you!

Originally, Golconda was called as Mankal during the Kakatiya Dynasty times. And the purpose was to defend their territory from the western attacks onto the Kondapalli Fort which was the Capitol Palace. Almost standing at a height of 120 feet, this entire building is built with granite. When there is a 390 feet compound wall, then there is nothing that can penetrate the fortress.

The whole story went upside down when the Bahmani Sultanate has won over and the Golconda Fort has become the main Palace of the Kingdom in the south. The three succeeding Qutb Shahi Sutans have extended the Fort to another five kilometers into what we see today. Until the late 1590s, this remained to be the capital of Qutb Shahi Dynasty when it the capital was shifted to Hyderabad city.

But when it fell into the reigns of Aurangzeb who was then the Mughal Emperor, it slowly started losing its lustre and importance in Indian political matters by the time of 1687.

How magnificent is its architecture?

If it was not as magnificent as we say here, will it be listed in one of the most cherished archeological monuments treasure by the Archeaological Survey of India? Definitely not. The 4 monuments that stretch upto 10 kilometers have a massive boundary wall that has about 87 bastions among which few have cannons standing solidly, 8 entry ways and drawbridges are almost 4.

Coming to its interiors, there are quite a lot of Royal Chambers, very large Hallways, the Temples too along side the Mosques. You can also find the Magazines and stables all well planned around the Fortress.

The most famous Fateh Darwaza has sharp and long spikes to it so as to not get bulldozed down by the Elephants to open the Doors from the south east corner of the Fort. It is said that these doors also give out echoes oing to their architectural beauties. There is another place where visitors usually clap in order to hear themselves reverberating through the Fort walls. This was usually built to send messages from one corner to another. Anything spoke here would be heard at the Bala Hissar pavilion which stands at a kilometer distance and the highest point of the entire place. If in case there is an attack, the Royals were immediately announced from here itself.

The Diamond Chamber: Well, any Royal palace will always have a diamond story to it attached and this Golconda is no exception. It is famous for having a vault for its diamonds which has kept Kohinoor diamond as well.

These diamonds were brought from various mines such as Atkur of Krishna District, Kollur mine of Kollur district. These were first found and cherished during the time of the Kaktiya kingdom. Being the one and only diamond mine that was discovered in the country, it was very famous in India.

Apart from that, this Diamond history goes back to note that this was the trade market for Diamond trading during few hundred years ago. Even though there were many other mines that had diamonds around the corner but then the British during their era had believed that the best diamonds were found exclusively in Golconda mine alone.

They have taken back many Diamonds that belonged to India which were found in Golconda and the below is the list of the Diamonds to name a few.

  • Daria-i-Noor
  • Noor-ul-Ain
  • Hope Diamond
  • Princie Diamond
  • Regent Diamond
  • Wittelsbach-Graff Diamond

The show of lights along with the sounds: The fort is gorgeous during the daylight with no-doubt. But the light that make the Fort look alive once again is what everyone must experience at least once if they prefer to experience Hyderabad to the fullest. The best part of this show is that it is made available in three languages namely Hindi, Telugu and English.

History

Golconda

According to ancient folklore, a shepherd discovered an idol in the region (now famous as Golconda Fort). Also, soon after the discovery, the Kakatiyan king came to know about the same, and he ordered the construction of a mud fort around the found idol. The fortress became renowned as “Golla Konda”, implying Shepherd’s Hill in the Telugu language. In addition, the Golconda fort was constructed in the 11th century under the Kakatiya Dynasty.

Nevertheless, it rose to prestige when it came under the control of the Qutub Shahi Dynasty during the late 16th century, i.e. when the ruler of the Qutub Shahi Dynasty declared his freedom from the Bahmani Sultanate in the late 15th century. The remarkable fort since then has grown from a mud fort to a towering structure with a 10 km exterior fence. After a failed try in the 16th century, the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb was finally able to invade the impenetrable fort after a prolonged nine-month blockade.

Golconda Fort Architecture

Golconda Fort is a magnificent structure constructed on a cliff of 400 feet with a rim of 7 km portraying the stunning combination of Hindu-Islamic architecture. The study walls of the Golconda fort comprise 87 bastions and eight gates, each running 50-60 feet. In addition, there are three strong straight fortification partitions, each within the other that made the fort impenetrable at that time. The main line of the wall comprises the town, and the second row is a dual border that drives around the ground of the hill on which the fort stands.

Likewise, the spectacular fort is well-known for its parade grounds, exquisite apartments, multiple galleries and mosques. Amongst the eight entrances, Fateh Darwaza is the primary gate as the victorious procession of King Aurangzeb cruised through it. This entryway is 13ft broad, 25ft extended and constructed of steel tips to guard it against elephants. On the other hand, the Balahisar Darwaza, constructed using the Nawabi culture and style, is another marvellous structure. However, now, only the eastern entrance is open for sightseers.

The South Indian dynasty “Kakatiyas” built the Golconda Qila Hyderabad. The Golconda history depicts that it was bloomed as the trade center of big diamonds. It has produced many world-famous diamonds which include the famous colorless Koh-i-Noor.

The fort was originally known as Mankal and it was built on a hilltop in 1143. The Golconda Fort Hyderabad Telangana was originally a mud fort under the regime of Rajah of Warangal. The Golconda fort history depicts that it was fortified between 14th and 17th centuries by the Qutub Shahi dynasty and Bahmani Sultans.

The inner area of the fort contains the ruins of mosques, palaces, and a hilltop pavilion. No doubt the Golconda history leaves you spellbound and amaze you with the stories behind it as it is amongst the magnificent fortresses in India.

The history of the Golconda fort takes you back to the 13th century to the ruling time of Kaktiyas which was followed by the Qutb Shahi dynasty. The fort rests on the 120-meter high granite hilltop and it is surrounded by huge crenulated ramparts.

The fort was known as Shepherd’s hill which actually means Golla Konda in Telugu. According to the legends, the shepherd boy came across an idol on this huge hill. And this information was brought into the consideration of ruling Kaktiyas at that time.

Thus, the ruling king constructed the mud fort surrounding the holy spot. Later on, the Qutub Shahi dynasty converted the mud fort into a massive granite fort by extending its circumference by 5 km.

The inner fort still has ruins of palaces, mosques, and a hilltop pavilion which rises about 130 meters high and gives a bird’s eye view of the other buildings.

Golconda in Telugu means ‘shepherd’s hill’, meaning Golla Konda, which according to local legend was about a boy who came across an idol here. The Kakatiya king then constructed a mud fort here, which was later taken over by the Bahamani kings.

The structure that you see today is built by the Qutub Shahi kings as they converted the mud fort into a massive granite fort extending 5 km in circumference. It was in 1687 when Mughal emperor Aurangzeb took over the Golconda and left it in ruins.

The fort still has mounted cannons, drawbridges, gateways, and majestic halls. The fort is also an engineering marvel as it has a number of acoustical features. For example, a person talking at the dome entrance can be clearly heard from the hilltop pavilion, which is almost one kilometer away.

About Golconda Fort

Golconda Fort

The history of Golconda Fort basically sums up the history of Hyderabad for centuries. With every rise and fall of this majestic fort, the city also has witnessed the various political and cultural developments that form an integral part of its golden history.

Mankal was the former name of Golconda. The word ‘Golconda’ is derived from two Telugu words ‘Golla’ and ‘Konda’, which translate to ‘Shepherd’s Hills’.

The foundation of the fort is said to have been laid by the Kakatiya dynasty in the 12th-century. Over the centuries, the fort was under the control of several dynasties such as Musunuri Kapaya Nayaka, Bahmani Sultanate, Qutub Shahi dynasty and the Mughal Empire. Each of the ruling dynasties contributed to the architecture of this fortress to make it one of the most awe-inspiring structures that stands in the city. The fort, however, slowly rose to prominence under the Bahmani Sultanate and reached the pinnacle of glory during the Qutub Shahi reign.

Golconda was an important trade centre for the renowned Golconda Diamonds due to its proximity to Kollur Mine. Daria-i-Noor, Noor-ul-Ain, Koh-i-Noor, Hope Diamond, to name a few, are believed to have been excavated from the Golconda Mines.

It is one of the oldest historical forts in Hyderabad, capturing grandeur, history and stories; visiting it early in the day allows you to experience the true splendour without obstacles.

Though it was built more than 500 years ago, Golconda Fort still stands majestically. It employs advanced techniques and a sturdy structure that will impress you with its incredible history and outstanding view of the nearby city.

Golconda Fort timings

The Golconda Fort was from the 12th century by the Kakatiya Kings and then reconstructed by the Qutub Shahi Kings. The story behind Golconda (Shepherd’s) Fort says that a shepherd boy once found an idol of a god while he was wandering the area.

This news reached the Kakatiya ruler, who decided to build a fort on this hill. That fort became known as Golconda (Shepherds Hill) Fort.

The Golconda fort was a diamond market. It had famous diamonds like the Kohinoor and Hope Diamonds and many other notable names such as The Regent Diamond and Darya-e Nur.

Still, there are great landmarks at Golconda Castle, like mosques and pavilions. Unfortunately, they’re all in ruins now.

However, after some 200 years, the fort came under Bahamani rulers. A short while later, the fort came under the control of Qutub Shahi Kings , who extended it further.

The Bahmani rulers and their descendants fortified the fort and expanded it during their reigns. Later in 1687, this whole fort was under the rule of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

Golconda Fort Light Show

What’s unique about this fort is its evening light and sound show. It was one of its major attractions for visitors. It plays around Rani Mahal, drawing visitors daily in English, Telugu, and Hindi.

This show is from 6 PM to 9:15 PM and has different times based on the month. On Mondays, the fort remains closed.

Architecture

Golconda Fort has inner ramparts of about 11 kilometres and 18 feet. Its gates with pointy iron spikes prevented Elephants from damaging the Fort and enemy attacks.

This fort presents a mesmerizing architecture that will take your breath away at every turn. It is on top of a 12-meter-tall granite rock and surrounded by ramparts.

One of the most amazing and special aspects of the architecture in the fort is its sound system.

The clapping sound can be heard from over a kilometre away and was probably to communicate information about attackers.

One of the famous destinations inside the Fort is Ramdas’ prison. The Hindu revenue collector Ramdas was imprisoned in Abdul Hasan Shah’s court.

He spent his time carving portraits of Hindu deities on the walls of his cell, which are now spread with holy vermillion.

A few lamps also hang at the spot, perpetually lit to offer blessings to visitors and pilgrims (Diya).

The fort’s main entrance is called the “Fateh Darwaza,” which means “Victory Gate” in English. Its name was derived from the victory procession of Aurangzeb’s army, who passed through this door to enter the fort. Not only does it commemorate the Emperor’s victory, but its amazing acoustics also attract visitors.

As you walk through the entrance of Golconda Fort, you will experience not only a sense of architectural excellence but also be able to see and hear the magnificent work that went into it.

This gate was beautifully built, allowing for someone’s claps at one point to be echoed by claps at the topmost pavilion. The other attractive feature of this fort is an impressive 800-year-old tree.

It is one of the most astonishing structures, consisting of many ornamental cannons and drawbridges. Huge halls, mosques with eight gateways, and stables add to its magnificence. There is a belief that it has a passage to escape under siege.

Many forts of South India are known for their art-historical aspects rather than their planning and architectural aspects [1]. The prevailing detailed survey reports available date back to 1802 when East India Company carried out a detailed documentation of the forts acquired by Tipu Sultan for establishing a defense base [1][2][3]. The inefficiency of the forts to hold a successful defense was neglected and hence turned functionally obsolete [1]. These deserted forts which possess various architectural and planning strategies worth conserving are cast aside due to lack of awareness. The current study presents one such fort located in Pavagada town which is explored along with documentation of the fort and its built heritage. Pavagada fort is one among the post-vijayanagara forts which came into prominence during the Nayaka rulers of Karnataka [2][3]. The fortified settlement possesses various structures built around the hill which hosts a settlement for its citizens and a royal citadel on the hill top [3]. Due to the negligence of the authorities and public, many heritage structures have vanished, and existing ones are undergoing deterioration. Hence, there is a strong need for documenting and conserving the fort and its built heritage. The current paper focuses on exploring the various historic built structures on the fort. Using GIS and visual assessment tools, the paper lists out the structures of the fort in their order of priority for conservation. The paper highlights the salient architectural features and values of the built structures on the fort emphasizing the need for conserving the fort and its built heritage.

Fortification have been known in India from Harappan period. In Kerala, the state which was formed in 1956 had forts in many place as names of would indicate. Based on authorship they could classified into three. The ones built by native rulers, those built by Europeans and those built by Europeans for native rulers. The native and European forts show distinct architectural features. This paper discusses the architectural features of some the native and European forts in Kerala .
