Rory mcilroy on pga tour/liv match: ‘hopefully a sign of things to come’.
- Ryan Lavner ,
- Ryan Lavner
Rory McIlroy said that he wasn’t trying to send a message by signing up for a made-for-TV event that will pit two of the best PGA Tour players against two of the top attractions on LIV Golf.
“We all thought it was a good idea,” McIlroy said Wednesday at the Irish Open, “and something that hopefully is a sign of things to come in the future.”
PGA Tour stars Scottie Scheffler and McIlroy will square off against LIV’s Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in Las Vegas in mid-December.
McIlroy has said for much of the past year that the warring sides need to reach a deal for the good of the sport, and that fans deserve to see the best players in the world together more than just four times a year at the major championships.
This match, McIlroy said, was him doing his part.
“We wanted to do something that all golf fans could get excited about,” he said. “It’s a way to show golf fans that this is what could happen, or these are the possibilities going forward. I’ve been saying this for a long time. I think golf and golf fans should get to see us more than four times a year. That’s what we’ve tried to do.”
Representatives from the PGA Tour and Saudi Public Investment Fund reportedly met this week in New York City as talks progress on a possible deal that would infuse billions of dollars into the PGA Tour Enterprises and potentially create a pathway back for LIV defectors.
McIlroy, who is part of the transaction subcommittee that directly negotiates with the Saudis, has expressed frustration at the slow pace of the negotiations. He said last month that he hasn’t part of a subcommittee call since June, and he added Wednesday that he wasn’t involved in the meetings this week.
“It’s certainly peculiar timing,” he said. “I don’t know much about the talks that are going on. I know there is, but that’s not something that I’m a part of. We are all in the game of golf trying to look for a solution to all this and try to move forward. So we’ll see. I know as much as you do at this point.”

What if PGA Tour, LIV Golf never come to an agreement? | Kostis & McCord
The PGA Tour’s purses are increasing, but its ratings aren’t. It’s a difficult conundrum for the Tour and commissioner Jay Monahan, who spoke (vaguely) about this issue during his end-of-the-year press conference at the Tour Championship last month.
“I think when you look at 2024, it’s important to note, and I’m going to note it, that overall consumption across our platforms in aggregate is up,” Monahan said. “That’s a really good sign for the PGA Tour and the engagement that we have with our fans.” (As our James Colgan notes, though, there are layers to that answer. )
The sport’s inflated purses and lackluster TV ratings were a major topic on the latest episode of “Kostis & McCord: Off Their Rockers,” a GOLF production — and pro golf’s current divide is correlated to both.
What Monahan didn’t say (and what Rory did): Sights, sounds, rumors from Tour Championship
Peter Kostis brought up the fact that World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler earned more than $62 million in 2024 , which (adjusted for inflation) was about double Jack Nicklaus’ career earnings. And today’s growing purses largely are due to the Tour needing to compete with LIV Golf’s mega money. Kostis wondered if it was all sustainable.
“Everything’s been thrown out of whack and I think in part that’s one of the things that caused people to lose interest in watching the game,” Kostis said. “It’s lost a little bit of its speciality.”
Kostis added that the different tiers of the sport also are an issue.
“We have a Tour with the ‘A’ league and the ‘B’ league,” he said. “We have the top 50 playing in their Signature Events and then the B league scrambling around to do whatever. It’s utter chaos right now; we have to figure out our way out of this and we got to do it soon. I think Rory was spot on when he said we need a resolution to this sooner rather than later because I don’t think the public is going to put up with it very much longer. In my opinion, under the believe it or not category, will it happen or won’t it happen, I think [a merger with LIV] will never happen right now. I think we are headed toward two leagues. I think we are headed toward a league that is primarily internationally focused and then we have obviously the PGA Tour, which is domestically focused. Maybe they’ll figure out a way for them to play the majors and a couple other events. I don’t see this coming to a resolution anytime soon.”
Added McCord: “I wish someone would come and ring and bell and say, ‘OK, here’s what we are going to do. In six months we’re going to merge, we’re going to do this, or we are not going to merge,’ whatever. But this vagueness that’s going on now in this sport completely overshadowed Scottie Scheffler’s year; he had one of the great years in the history of golf.”

McIlroy says PGA-LIV exhibition match offers a glimpse of possibilities
Rory McIlroy says the made-for-TV match in December between stars of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf is not about sending a message
Rory McIlroy doesn’t view the made-for-TV match between stars from the PGA Tour and LIV Golf as a message, more like a glimpse of the possibilities of what can happen, and what has been missing in golf since the great divide.
McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are playing against Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau in December in Las Vegas. The only times they have competed in the same field this year were in the four majors.
McIlroy, once a fierce opponent of Saudi-funded LIV Golf, has been bullish about finding a solution to bring the top players together more often. He has was on the PGA Tour board for a year, resigned and now is part of a negotiating committee.
“It’s more we wanted to do something that, I guess, all golf fans could get excited about,” McIlroy said Wednesday ahead of the Irish Open. “It’s a way to show golf fans in the world that this is what could happen or these are the possibilities going forward. I’ve been saying this for a long time. I think golf and golf fans (should) get to see us together more than four times a year.
“I think we all thought it was a good idea and something that hopefully is a sign of things to come in the future.”
A flight-tracking website reported that private planes of the PGA Tour and Aramco, formally known as the Saudi Arabian Oil Co., were in the New York area, and ESPN reported more meetings between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia. Tiger Woods also was in New York, first for a charity event.
“I don’t know much about the talks that are going on. I know that there is, but that’s not something that I’m a part of,” McIlroy said. “I think we are all in the game of golf trying to look for a solution to all this and try to move forward.”
The PGA Tour starts the fall portion of its schedule , while LIV Golf wraps up its regular season at a public course in the Chicago suburbs. Jon Rahm, who signed with LIV in December, has a slight lead in the bid for the individual title and an $18 million bonus.
Still unclear is Rahm's status with the Ryder Cup . He is required to play four European tour events to maintain his membership — the Olympics count as one — and Rahm says he has entered the Spanish Open next week.
But he is required to pay fines for playing LIV events against European tour events.
“Still talking to the DP World Tour. I intend to play in Spain,” Rahm said Wednesday ahead of LIV Golf Chicago. “We entered a long time ago. Whether they let me play or not is a different thing. I’m not a big fan of the fines. I think I’ve been outspoken about that. I don’t intend to pay the fines, and we keep trying to have a discussion with them about how we can make this happen.”
Rahm said the European tour would be doing Spanish golf a disservice by not letting him play.
The European tour said in a statement: “Jon has outstanding sanctions for breaches of the DP World Tour’s conflicting tournament regulation. Until those outstanding sanctions are resolved, he is ineligible to play in a DP World Tour event.”
As for the PGA Tour-LIV match in Las Vegas, Rahm said he would be happy to be part of a similar event in the future.
“I think we could do some special things having both tours,” he said.

Aussies on Tour: Guan to make PGA TOUR debut
A new name joins the Aussie contingent on the PGA TOUR this week with New South Welshman Jeffrey Guan to make his debut at the Procore Championship in California.
The club champion at Bexley Golf Club in Sydney at just 12 years of age, good judges have been closely monitoring Guan’s progress for close to a decade.
He won the 2022 Junior PLAYERS Championship in record-setting fashion and represented the International team in the Junior Presidents Cup that same year.
With three top-10 finishes on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia as an amateur during the 2022/2023 season, Guan finished atop the Future Tour Order of Merit. That provided a direct pathway onto his home Tour, a Tour he joined as a professional last November at the Queensland PGA Championship.
Guan logged his first top-five finish in just his second start at the Victorian PGA Championship, had top 10s in two Webex Players Series events and was added to the Golf Australia Rookie Squad in February this year.
Last month he signed with management company, Sportfive, joining a stable of stars that boasts major winners Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson, Keegan Bradley and Brian Harman.
Thanks to a sponsor invitation, the 20-year-old will now tee it up alongside the likes of Wyndham Clark, Max Homa, defending champion Sahith Theegala and fellow Aussies Min Woo Lee and Aaron Baddeley at the Silverado Resort.
In announcing Guan’s signing to Sportfive, President of Global Golf, Steve Loy, said he was eager to help Guan’s growth on the world stage.
“We are very excited about Jeff, an excellent young player with the skills and dedication to succeed at the highest level,” said Loy.
“He’s talented, determined, and ambitious, and we have the perfect worldwide set-up to guide him throughout his career.”
Guan has played four events on the Challenge Tour in Europe this year, his best result a tie for 10th at the Le Vaudreil Golf Challenge, a tournament in which he had a share of the lead at the halfway mark.
As Guan begins his PGA TOUR career, Cameron Smith and his Ripper GC teammates play their final individual event of the 2024 LIV Golf season in Chicago.
Winner of the inaugural Chicago event in 2022, Smith enters the week sixth in the individual standings, Ripper GC third in the team standings. If Ripper GC can hang onto third, they will earn a first-round bye in next week’s Dallas Team Championship.
Jason Scrivener and David Micheluzzi will fly the Aussie flag at the Amgen Irish Open, Karl Vilips can lock up a PGA TOUR card at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Simmons Bank Open and there are nine Aussies in the field for the Sanford International on the PGA TOUR Champions.

2024 Procore Championship TV schedule, live stream, channel, where to watch FedEx Cup Fall coverage
The pga tour is back in action this week in wine country.
After a quick break, the PGA Tour returns this week for the 2024 Procore Championship. Representing the first tournament of the FedEx Cup Fall, the Procore Championship will welcome a colorful cast of characters to Silverado Resort in Napa, California.
While many seek to secure their playing status in either signature events by finishing inside The Next 10 — Nos. 51-60 in the FedEx Cup — or just generally on the PGA Tour by remaining inside the top 125, others like Sahith Theegala, Wyndham Clark and Max Homa arrive with another event in mind.
Members of the United States Presidents Cup team, these three Americans all seek something different ahead of their voyage to Royal Montreal at the end of the month. Theegala hopes to go back-to-back at Silverado and capture his second PGA Tour victory while Clark aims to continue a relatively underrated stretch of play dating back the past few months.
Meanwhile, Homa is in need of a spark and there may be no course better for him to find one. A winner at this par 72 in 2021 and 2022, Homa will need to muster together a similar type of quality given his disappointing finish to his 2024 postseason.
Those repping the red, white and blue are not the only Presidents Cup participants in the field as Min Woo Lee, Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes fly the international flag. While Conners made his way to East Lake, Hughes and Lee start inside The Next 10 and will try to maintain their positioning beginning this week in Napa.

PGA Tour angers 9/11 victims for 'tone deaf' Saudi meeting in New York on anniversary
A meeting between the pga tour and saudi arabia's public investment fund took place in new york on the days around the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks..
Families of victims from the September 11, 2001 terror attacks have slammed the PGA Tour for insensitively scheduling a meeting with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) around the somber anniversary.
Reports indicate that PGA Tour officials and representatives from Saudi Arabia's PIF, which funds LIV Golf , met in New York on Tuesday. The meetings, expected to span several days, began just before the 23rd anniversary of the deadliest terrorist attacks on U.S. soil, sparking outrage from 9/11 Justice president Brett Eagleson, who labeled the discussions "completely tone deaf."
In a CNN interview on Wednesday, Eagleson, who lost his father John in the 9/11 attacks, stated: “At one point in time, the PGA Tour were brothers in arms with us. They were standing lockstep, fighting the battle about Saudi Arabia doing 9/11. About all these other atrocities, women’s rights, human rights. All these different issues that Saudi Arabia is infamous for, the PGA was standing side-by-side with us. And then all it took was a couple billion dollars and they caved like a cheap suit.

Brooks Koepka agrees to Rory McIlroy reunion despite LIV Golf commitments
“Of all days, they pick this day. The day we mourn the death of 3,000 Americans, to be blocks away. As we speak right now, they’re likely locked in arms smoking cigars while our family members burned alive 10 blocks away.
“What happened to (PGA Tour commissioner Jay) Monahan? He said he was going to meet with us, he said he owed us an apology. We haven’t heard words from him. He sent Jimmy Dunne in front of a senate committee panel and made him take arrows.
“Monahan just stepped away... So you know what, the PGA, shame on you - you should be advocating that we have closure first, and then let’s talk about your golf deal next.”
In an official statement released on Tuesday, Eagleson shed further light on the Saudi Arabian government's alleged involvement in the September 11 attacks. Newly released video made public in a June CBS News report displays Omar al-Bayoumi, a Saudi intelligence operative, discussing an attack "plan" and where to hit the U.S. Capitol building.
15 of the 19 attackers involved in the assault of the United States that day were Saudi nationals. The Saudi Arabian government, however, has vehemently denied any involvement in the attacks.
